:00:04. > :00:12.Good evening, welcome to the start of the weekend with Midlands Today

:00:12. > :00:18.from the BBC. Deadline midnight - the final hours of consultation on

:00:18. > :00:21.the controversial high-speed rail link. It is not only not going to

:00:21. > :00:25.solve the deep divide, it is going to be worse, it will not help the

:00:26. > :00:31.environment. A viper in our midst - at the words

:00:31. > :00:35.of a judge who jailed this man for the terrorist offences. He was a

:00:35. > :00:39.posting violent, extremist views on land, encouraging people to murder

:00:39. > :00:44.MPs. Birmingham City admit they have

:00:44. > :00:47.financial problems, but are adamant it is not a crisis. It could be

:00:47. > :00:53.Armageddon, but it could be a new start, who knows what is in the

:00:53. > :01:03.future? 's and a Motown revival, not in

:01:03. > :01:12.

:01:12. > :01:15.Detroit, but Warwickshire, thanks Good evening. Tonight: vital for

:01:15. > :01:18.Britain, its economy and its transport network or a blight on

:01:18. > :01:20.our countryside that will haunt the government? Those are the fiercely

:01:20. > :01:26.contrasting views of Network Rail and the Countryside Alliance,

:01:26. > :01:29.who've just added their submissions to the consultation on High Speed 2.

:01:29. > :01:33.The rest of us have less than six hours to do the same, as the

:01:33. > :01:37.deadline to have a say on the proposal to build a high-speed rail

:01:37. > :01:40.link between London and Birmingham ends at midnight. But it'll be the

:01:40. > :01:43.Transport Secretary who'll have the final word, and he won't be rushed

:01:43. > :01:46.into making any decisions before the end of the year. Giles Latcham

:01:46. > :01:53.reports on possibly THE most controversial engineering plan to

:01:53. > :01:56.affect our region. "Never the twain shall meet" goes

:01:56. > :01:59.the saying, but today they did. On the last day of the public

:01:59. > :02:09.consultation we brought together two voices from opposing sides of

:02:09. > :02:09.

:02:09. > :02:14.the HS2 debate. I can understand what you are coming from. Could one

:02:14. > :02:24.convinced the other? Night out of 10 train project over inflate day

:02:24. > :02:25.

:02:25. > :02:29.I accept that usage numbers were higher and then they turned out to

:02:29. > :02:34.be the case, but the economic benefits from that far exceeded

:02:34. > :02:37.those that were convicted. This would be developed, there would be

:02:37. > :02:42.some business parks. This is part of the regeneration. But every

:02:42. > :02:46.building built here, that is one less in Coventry, Wolverhampton...

:02:46. > :02:51.It would be enormously beneficial for us to be able to operate, would

:02:51. > :02:57.work in London that has become a major global city, and do it in the

:02:57. > :03:01.regions. It is not just the ability to do things over the internet, it

:03:01. > :03:05.is having face-to-face beatings, being able to get there quickly, it

:03:05. > :03:10.is really important. If you have a big office in London and a 49

:03:10. > :03:13.minute trip to Birmingham, why do you need an office in Birmingham?

:03:13. > :03:19.Many places will say, we don't need that office, we will shut it down,

:03:19. > :03:21.Precious little common ground, but arguments commonly heard at

:03:21. > :03:27.roadshows and public meetings across the Midlands since

:03:27. > :03:29.consultation began in February. The government won't say how many

:03:29. > :03:33.responses and comments they have had through this consultation

:03:33. > :03:36.period, but they are due to make a statement based on them by the end

:03:36. > :03:43.of the year. Ahead of that, their message today was simple - yes, we

:03:43. > :03:47.can talk about it, but a new line we must have. Anyone who has ever

:03:47. > :03:49.been stuck in the queue at Euston on Friday night trying to get on a

:03:49. > :03:54.train to Birmingham or Manchester will know we are rapidly running

:03:54. > :03:58.out of capacity on the west coast main line, and urgently need a new

:03:58. > :04:04.line to give additional capacity but those are journeys. This whole

:04:04. > :04:09.project is a vanity project... of our MEPs was travelling by road,

:04:10. > :04:14.rallying support for the anti-s. Why was the green bait -- Green

:04:14. > :04:18.Belt created? It is about to be conurbations, one of the things,

:04:18. > :04:23.when it has been built, it will make the West Midlands and

:04:23. > :04:27.Birmingham a satellite of London. The Countryside Alliance say lives

:04:28. > :04:31.will be destroyed. In London, they want changes to the route.

:04:31. > :04:39.Consultation will soon be over, but with stakes as high as these, the

:04:39. > :04:43.arguments continue. Thanks for joining us. Staying off

:04:43. > :04:47.the street and out of trouble, the teenagers taking to the stage

:04:47. > :04:49.instead. And we're at one of the country's

:04:49. > :04:57.biggest dance festivals, which has grown from its beginnings in a

:04:57. > :05:00.Warwickshire farmhouse to become a An internet blogger from

:05:00. > :05:03.Wolverhampton has been jailed for 12 years after admitting soliciting

:05:03. > :05:06.the murder of MPs who'd voted for the Iraq war.

:05:06. > :05:10.Bilal Zaheer Ahmad, who's 23, was also sentenced for other terror ism

:05:10. > :05:18.offences at Bristol Crown Court. Our reporter has been following the

:05:18. > :05:21.case and joins us now. What more can you tell us? This is all to do

:05:21. > :05:29.with postings he made online last year, specifically after a trial

:05:29. > :05:36.that had taken place in London. She had stabbed the Labour MP Stephen

:05:36. > :05:41.Timms, he went on line, posted messages in her support, and said,

:05:41. > :05:47.revolution Muslim, he said other people should go out and do the

:05:47. > :05:52.same thing. The judge -- judge described him as a viper in our

:05:53. > :05:56.midst. Really strong words from Mr Justice Royce and, he said, you

:05:56. > :06:01.were intent on striking at the heart of our democracy. You report

:06:01. > :06:05.to be a British citizen, but would you stand for is totally alien to

:06:05. > :06:08.what we stand for in this country. Strong words, a 12 year sentence,

:06:08. > :06:13.he was also told that when he is released, he will have to spend at

:06:13. > :06:20.least five more years on licence. Whatever the police said? They are

:06:20. > :06:23.pleased, because the offices were the ones in apiarist not long after

:06:23. > :06:28.those comments. They are particularly worried about online

:06:28. > :06:32.extremism. People have a right to freedom of speech, but with that

:06:32. > :06:36.comes a responsibility, they should do that within the law. Ahmad went

:06:36. > :06:41.beyond the law, he solicited the murder of many people, and it is an

:06:41. > :06:45.important sentenced today. By sheer coincidence, I happened to be at

:06:45. > :06:48.the counter-terrorism officers when he was arrested last November, so I

:06:48. > :06:53.know how important this is, they're taking online extremism very

:06:53. > :06:55.seriously indeed, not just Islamic extremism, but also from the far

:06:56. > :06:58.right. Birmingham City's acting chairman

:06:58. > :07:02.Peter Pannu is flying back from Hong Kong as speculation continues

:07:02. > :07:05.over the club's financial position. Tonight, another of the club's top

:07:05. > :07:08.players is all set to leave St Andrew's to reduce the wage bill.

:07:08. > :07:13.But the Blues insist their bankers are being very supportive. Ian

:07:13. > :07:17.Winter reports. Something's missing at St Andrew's.

:07:17. > :07:24.The proud name of Birmingham City is disappearing. But some fans fear

:07:24. > :07:27.losing a few letters is the least of their club's problems. Even the

:07:27. > :07:31.signs are coming down at Birmingham City! It is an absolute crisis.

:07:31. > :07:34.Crisis, what crisis? That's the gist of the latest statement on the

:07:34. > :07:38.Blues website. Designed to calm fears about the club's financial

:07:38. > :07:41.position. But this was the fateful moment in May, when the Blues'

:07:41. > :07:45.owner Carson Yeung realised the Premier League gravy train had been

:07:45. > :07:49.derailed by relegation. And four weeks later, he was arrested in

:07:49. > :07:53.Hong Kong on suspicion of money laundering. Frozen assets in the

:07:53. > :07:56.Far East are causing anxious times at St Andrew's. Acting chairman

:07:56. > :08:06.Peter Pannu admits the benefactor's legal wrangles does pose some

:08:06. > :08:13.

:08:13. > :08:17.If the case is proven against him, the Hong Kong government could

:08:17. > :08:21.seize his assets, and effectively owned Birmingham City Football Club.

:08:21. > :08:25.It could be Armageddon, but it could be a brand new start, who

:08:25. > :08:28.knows what is going to be in the future? This pantomime soap opera

:08:28. > :08:30.that is Birmingham City. Football fan Peter Knowles is keeping a

:08:30. > :08:38.close eye on developments at St Andrew's, because he's also

:08:38. > :08:42.stockbroker. I think the chances of them going into administration are

:08:42. > :08:46.quite slim at the moment. They are still receiving the parachute from

:08:46. > :08:50.a Sky, which means from a trading perspective, there is money coming

:08:50. > :08:53.in. It is only if there is no money coming in that I would be worried

:08:53. > :08:56.if I was at them. So Blues fans will give thanks for those

:08:56. > :09:00.parachute payments. And offer a little prayer that their absence

:09:00. > :09:03.from the Premier League will last no more than one season.

:09:03. > :09:11.Ian joins us live at St Andrew's. What sort of reaction will Peter

:09:11. > :09:14.Pannu get from the Blues fans? is very difficult to answer. I

:09:14. > :09:20.understand that Peter Pannu is hoping to be back in time for

:09:20. > :09:25.tomorrow's kick-off, their friendly against Everton, that hinges on

:09:25. > :09:29.flight connections. The club say they are where there may be a small

:09:29. > :09:34.protest, they're not sure the size of it, they haven't secured a shirt

:09:34. > :09:39.sponsor. That is being offered on a match-by-match basis, although they

:09:39. > :09:45.point out they have sold over 11,000 season tickets, only 900

:09:45. > :09:50.less than this time a year ago. is the latest player most likely to

:09:50. > :09:53.be leaving St Andrew's? They're very latest tonight is that

:09:53. > :10:02.goalkeeper Ben Foster has been having a medical at the Hawthorns,

:10:02. > :10:07.and is on the verge of completing a season-long loan to West Brom, with

:10:07. > :10:10.West Brom's goalkeeper moving in the other direction. Blues fans

:10:10. > :10:14.always knew that relegation would mean the sale of some of their more

:10:14. > :10:18.highly paid players, but the fact that Ben Foster is now the 4th big-

:10:18. > :10:21.name player to be leaving St Andrews is a cause for concern, and

:10:21. > :10:29.he may well not be the last to leave the club before the end of

:10:29. > :10:31.August. Thank you. Warwickshire Social Services has

:10:31. > :10:41.launched an independent inquiry following the murder of a 27-year-

:10:41. > :10:42.

:10:42. > :10:45.old woman from Gemma Hayter was found naked and beaten on a disused

:10:45. > :10:48.railway line a year ago. Yesterday five people were found guilty of

:10:48. > :10:50.killing her. A serious case review began in January to establish

:10:50. > :10:53.whether any lessons need to be learned.

:10:53. > :10:55.A murder inquiry's underway after a man died following an explosion in

:10:55. > :10:58.a garage last weekend. 41-year-old Job Wilding died from severe burns

:10:58. > :11:01.after a gas cylinder exploded on Gristhorpe Road in Selly Oak in

:11:01. > :11:04.Birmingham. Another man, who's 35, is in a critical condition. Three

:11:04. > :11:07.people have been arrested and released on bail.

:11:07. > :11:12.Teenagers are the most likely to be the victims of street disorder, yet

:11:12. > :11:15.they're often the first to be labelled the troublemakers.

:11:15. > :11:18.Now one group is trying to turn around that image by working on a

:11:18. > :11:23.play called Rough Diamonds. Our reporter Kevin Reide went to

:11:23. > :11:26.Wolverhampton to see them rehearse. These youngsters at the EYES

:11:26. > :11:29.project are in a race against time. Next week they'll be performing

:11:29. > :11:31.their play Rough Diamonds to the public at Wolverhampton's grand

:11:31. > :11:41.theatre, tackling issues such as racism, teenage pregnancy, and

:11:41. > :11:43.

:11:43. > :11:48.street crime. Look, mate, I don't know you, so back down, okay?

:11:48. > :11:52.Backed down! Look! More than 70 young people from all backgrounds

:11:52. > :11:58.are involved - the aim being to keep them off the streets and out

:11:58. > :12:02.of trouble, and at the same time uncover natural talent. A lot of

:12:02. > :12:06.times they haven't identified their talents, learned how to translate

:12:06. > :12:09.this into marketable skills. This is one avenue where we can all

:12:09. > :12:13.identify their talents, and they can work on one project together

:12:13. > :12:15.and see what they can produce. project serves as a beacon of hope

:12:15. > :12:18.for many young people in Wolverhampton, steering them away

:12:18. > :12:27.from not only anti-social behaviour but in some cases much more serious

:12:27. > :12:31.Former gang member Isia Maylor knows only too well the perils of

:12:31. > :12:34.the streets. The 25-year old has served a prison sentence for gun

:12:34. > :12:42.crime, but EYES and Rough Diamonds has helped him discover talents he

:12:42. > :12:52.never knew he had. It's also taught him a thing or two about life.

:12:52. > :12:55.

:12:55. > :13:00.was in jail, I come out of jail, and... I straightened my ways. I

:13:00. > :13:06.thought I was bigger than everyone. That isn't the case. We're all

:13:06. > :13:13.equals. More rehearsals as the countdown begins, but what do those

:13:13. > :13:18.here feel there needs to be to stop anti social behaviour?? I think

:13:18. > :13:24.there should be more organisations like this, to help people get off

:13:24. > :13:29.the street. Things where they can play, knowing there is not going to

:13:29. > :13:34.be trouble coming to them. More youth centres and organisations,

:13:34. > :13:38.more clubs that can be due to what you want to do when you grow older.

:13:38. > :13:41.Although there are two things available, they are not advertised

:13:41. > :13:51.enough for Curtains are up next Wednesday - a chance for

:13:51. > :13:51.

:13:51. > :13:55.Wolverhampton to take great pride The positive things going on there.

:13:55. > :14:05.Good to have you with us this evening - still to come: a soul

:14:05. > :14:07.

:14:07. > :14:10.legend gives Warwickshire the It's holiday time but if you're not

:14:11. > :14:14.going away you may be going to a music festival - they're lots of

:14:14. > :14:17.them going on all over the region and over next six weeks we're going

:14:17. > :14:20.to be there too meeting the hundreds of thousands of people

:14:20. > :14:24.that travel to them from all over the country. Today sees the start

:14:24. > :14:26.of our first big festival of the summer - Global Gathering which has

:14:26. > :14:33.gone from humble beginnings in Warwickshire eleven years ago to a

:14:33. > :14:43.multimillion pound world- wide business. Ben Sidwell is at the

:14:43. > :14:44.

:14:44. > :14:49.festival now. There are some flashing lights.

:14:49. > :14:56.Welcome to the main stage. The party is well under way. This

:14:56. > :15:02.weekend 55,000 people will be here to enjoy the festival. It is thanks

:15:02. > :15:08.mainly to one of music entrepreneur from Stratford upon Avon. I spent

:15:08. > :15:14.much of the week behind the man behind Global Gathering.

:15:14. > :15:18.Under way for its 11th year, it is one of the main fixtures of the

:15:18. > :15:22.music festival calendar but the scenes near Stafford this afternoon

:15:22. > :15:30.are long way from the tranquillity of the HQ in the Warwickshire

:15:30. > :15:35.countryside. We have been lucky where we are situated and at the

:15:35. > :15:39.end of the day if it is not broken, you don't fix it. Everything is

:15:39. > :15:43.running well at the moment. The offices are great, we are here to

:15:43. > :15:47.stay. James has won a group of four who came up with the idea for

:15:47. > :15:51.Global Gathering in the year 2000. He is the boss of the company and

:15:51. > :15:58.the only remaining member. It was what he did with the testable six

:15:58. > :16:02.years ago that changed the business forever. We believe it it was a

:16:02. > :16:08.great festival for five years in the UK and why shouldn't we do

:16:08. > :16:15.these international events and the countries we targeted to do events

:16:15. > :16:18.in had not really had them in the past. They all said yes and he we

:16:18. > :16:22.are five years later doing an international show and they are

:16:22. > :16:25.doing well. The week leading up to the festival means time in the car

:16:25. > :16:31.travelling between the office and the festival site making sure

:16:31. > :16:34.everything is ready. When the headline it goes on on the Friday

:16:34. > :16:42.night, the sound and lights are great, the crowd goes mad and you

:16:42. > :16:47.think that is the biggest... The hair on the back of the next stanza.

:16:47. > :16:51.They arrived in their thousands and I met up with James again. For him,

:16:51. > :16:55.the next 48 hours are the most important of the whole year. There

:16:55. > :17:01.is a huge element of risk which mitigates as you get more

:17:01. > :17:05.established. We have been going 11 years and we know what the fan base

:17:05. > :17:10.is and we budget accordingly. We're a company that needs to make a

:17:10. > :17:14.profit. We also make sure we plough money back into the best will.

:17:14. > :17:18.festival ends on Sunday morning. By Monday, the team will be checking

:17:18. > :17:26.it has been a financial success before planning begins the next

:17:26. > :17:29.year. Let's speak to James. We said it is

:17:30. > :17:37.a multi-million-pound business. You go to some strange places like

:17:37. > :17:41.South Korea and Belarus. It all gets bored out of reputation, we

:17:41. > :17:45.have been doing this for 11 years, I have invited people from all over

:17:45. > :17:51.the world and they have witnessed what we do in the UK and one to

:17:51. > :17:54.take it to their country. We have worked with some great people and

:17:54. > :17:58.grown the festival from the Ukraine, five years ago, Russia four years

:17:58. > :18:04.ago, Belarus and they had seen it in neighbouring countries.

:18:04. > :18:10.Basically they wanted to do it. have shown music festivals can make

:18:10. > :18:15.money and do not have to be multinational companies. It is that

:18:15. > :18:21.having an idea and wanting to deliver something and Petula heart

:18:21. > :18:27.and soul into it. There is risk, yes, it is financially risky to put

:18:27. > :18:33.these things on. When you have that amount of people in a field, it

:18:33. > :18:36.feels amazing. As I said, the festival goes on until the early

:18:36. > :18:46.hours of tomorrow morning and then they look to do it all again next

:18:46. > :18:49.year. From Warwickshire, goodbye. The thousands turning out. Just a

:18:49. > :18:52.week before the start of the new football season, a shock at Port

:18:52. > :18:55.Vale as their long standing chairman Bill Bratt resigns. He'll

:18:55. > :18:58.stay on the board. Mr Bratt's been in charge for nearly 10 years, but

:18:58. > :19:00.fans have vented their anger towards him over a lack of

:19:00. > :19:05.investment. Laura May McMullan's been finding out where this leaves

:19:05. > :19:08.the club. There's just eight days to go

:19:08. > :19:13.before the start of the season and tonight Port Vale are without a

:19:13. > :19:23.permanent chairman. Today Bill Bratt decided to sever his day to

:19:23. > :19:23.

:19:23. > :19:28.day ties with the club. For I love the club, I have done what I can.

:19:28. > :19:32.It has been a difficult time, the past 18 months. I believe it is

:19:32. > :19:35.right for somebody else to do it. It's been a turbulent time at Vale

:19:35. > :19:38.Park. Some fans have been protesting for months - accusing

:19:38. > :19:47.the board of a lack of investment. And last month at an EGM here there

:19:47. > :19:51.was a vote of no confidence in the board.

:19:51. > :19:56.Fans have mixed views. It is not just Bill Bratt, it is all of them.

:19:56. > :20:01.The club needs to move on. The money needs to be found from

:20:01. > :20:07.somewhere. The higher you are, the harder you fall. I believe in

:20:07. > :20:10.supporting the club through thick and thin. This was Bill Bratt

:20:10. > :20:17.talking to me last month. Today he cleared his desk and walked away
