:00:09. > :00:13.Welcome to Midlands Today. The headlines tonight.

:00:13. > :00:19.William and Kate in Birmingham. The royal couple visit a shop attacked

:00:19. > :00:26.by looters. It was the surprise of my life that

:00:26. > :00:31.they have come to my shop. Silence on the streets of West

:00:31. > :00:36.Bromwich in memory of the three men killed during the riots.

:00:36. > :00:40.Are some of us really programmed to want to eat fatty food?

:00:40. > :00:50.And we are at V Festival, the biggest in the region, where for

:00:50. > :00:52.

:00:52. > :01:00.some camping has turned into glamping.

:01:00. > :01:03.Good evening. Tonight, Prince William's praise for Birmingham's

:01:03. > :01:07.reaction to the riots. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

:01:07. > :01:12.had a private meeting with the parents of the three men killed in

:01:12. > :01:16.Winson Green, community leaders, emergency workers and city centre

:01:16. > :01:21.traders, but what impact did their visit had it -- have on people

:01:21. > :01:24.affected by the violence? As if on cue, the sun emerged as

:01:24. > :01:27.the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in the heart of Birmingham.

:01:28. > :01:32.They had come to the Summerfield Community Centre in Winson Green to

:01:32. > :01:38.hear first hand the stories of those affected by the devastating

:01:38. > :01:44.riots just over a week ago. They were talking about the type of

:01:44. > :01:48.work we do, trying to bring calm to the streets, and they were moved by

:01:48. > :01:52.the level of commitment and sacrificed by the emergency

:01:52. > :01:56.services and those of us in the community who were prepared to work

:01:56. > :02:00.with the police to try to restore order.

:02:00. > :02:07.Central to the visit was a private 20 minute meeting with the families

:02:07. > :02:10.of the three men who died just a short distance from here.

:02:10. > :02:15.The open-air funerals of Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul Musavir

:02:15. > :02:23.took place in the city yesterday. 20,000 people turned up to pay

:02:23. > :02:27.their respects. Flowers are spreading along Dudley Road, where

:02:27. > :02:30.they died trying to protect property. The royal couple

:02:30. > :02:35.questioned emergency services caught up in the trouble.

:02:35. > :02:39.It has made such a difference to Birmingham after such a traumatic

:02:39. > :02:46.week. It is great to end in the sunshine and with the royal couple

:02:46. > :02:51.here. Of word spread quickly and the crowd was there to meet them at

:02:51. > :02:56.the next stop, a shop in the city centre eluded -- looted in the

:02:56. > :03:01.riots. It is fantastic that they have

:03:01. > :03:09.taken time out to show their support. It is really nice for them

:03:09. > :03:14.to be here. Customers were taken by surprise.

:03:14. > :03:19.Nobody would believe this! royal couple spent just a few hours

:03:19. > :03:22.in Birmingham but people told me that the impact would last much

:03:22. > :03:28.longer. People were very appreciative, they

:03:28. > :03:33.just wanted to speak to ordinary Brummies caught up in the rioting.

:03:34. > :03:43.Are you confident that this will put a stop to any community

:03:44. > :03:45.

:03:45. > :03:49.tension? I am, because of the efforts people have made. At once

:03:49. > :03:55.again, the second city was the focus of massive media attention

:03:55. > :04:02.but this time the pictures were positive.

:04:02. > :04:09.I am joined now by Ajay Bhatia, who welcomed the couple to his shop.

:04:09. > :04:15.This must have been a bizarre two weeks for you. It was basically all

:04:15. > :04:21.sleepless nights since this happened. After meeting the Duke

:04:21. > :04:25.and Duchess of Cambridge, it is like something to cheer about.

:04:25. > :04:31.Let's get back to what happened. People just entered your shop,

:04:31. > :04:35.didn't they? You saw it on your CCTV footage.

:04:35. > :04:42.We can see the pictures now, they were jumping over the counter. But

:04:42. > :04:51.you were not there, were you? I left five minutes before this

:04:51. > :04:56.happened. -- no, I left. Later I thought, everything has gone, I

:04:56. > :05:03.will never be able to stand on my feet again. But the support from

:05:03. > :05:08.the community around was amazing. What did they do? They came out

:05:09. > :05:15.with their brooms and said, we have taken time out from the office to

:05:16. > :05:21.help you with your shop. I was open within four hours. Today the Duke

:05:21. > :05:27.and Duchess of Cambridge turned up. What happened? It was like the best

:05:27. > :05:33.moment of my life. I never thought they would come to my shop. They

:05:33. > :05:38.spoke to me about exactly what happened. There were a few light

:05:38. > :05:48.moments talking about the cricket as well! You were still left with

:05:48. > :05:50.

:05:50. > :05:58.big problems. Does the even -- the royal visit make any difference's -

:05:58. > :06:04.- difference? You have to pay your rent and I have two children in

:06:04. > :06:11.education. The insurance company should have priority. The big

:06:11. > :06:20.stores can afford the losses but, being a family business, a day-to-

:06:20. > :06:28.day business, the cash flow stops. So very, very hard but a great day

:06:28. > :06:32.today? It was a great day. We wish you luck with your business.

:06:32. > :06:36.An hour before the Duke and Duchess arrived, traders in West Bromwich

:06:36. > :06:39.held a two minute silence in memory of the three men who died in Winson

:06:39. > :06:42.Green. On the stroke of 11 traders and

:06:42. > :06:52.shoppers stood quietly as the community came together to pay

:06:52. > :06:55.

:06:55. > :07:01.their respects. With more than 70 traders, it is a

:07:01. > :07:05.bustling market and in times of recession and the pattern is

:07:05. > :07:12.important. Even so, stallholder has asked police and the Council for a

:07:12. > :07:17.two minute silence for the three men mown down in Winson Green.

:07:17. > :07:22.I am delighted there has been a spontaneous response to something

:07:22. > :07:32.which has touched all of our hearts. People are showing how important it

:07:32. > :07:34.

:07:34. > :07:41.is to be together. And so they stood in silent tribute.

:07:41. > :07:48.Just down the road, the wife of an Indian sweet shop owner holding

:07:48. > :07:52.court. He was out looking for the van stolen by the rioters. Some say

:07:52. > :07:57.that tensions are still high because of desperate poverty.

:07:57. > :08:05.Young people do not have enough jobs. To live in society now you

:08:05. > :08:09.have to get 26 grand a year or more. There are no 26 grand jobs. People

:08:09. > :08:17.were taken aback by what happened up the road, with the riots, but I

:08:17. > :08:21.think we are getting back to normal. People are scared to come to West

:08:21. > :08:25.Bromwich but everything is getting to be OK again.

:08:25. > :08:29.The hope is that the silence will have drawn a line under the events

:08:29. > :08:35.of last week and that life and trade in West Bromwich can get back

:08:35. > :08:37.to normal. Let's give you the latest

:08:37. > :08:42.investigation from West Midlands Police on their investigation into

:08:42. > :08:47.the riots. We say the more than 500 people have been arrested and 141

:08:47. > :08:52.have been charged. Their website has had 800,000 hits in August and

:08:52. > :08:55.a special e-mail address has received more than 800 messages.

:08:55. > :08:59.You are with Midlands Today. Still to come...

:08:59. > :09:06.Warnings to pregnant women about how to protect babies from a

:09:06. > :09:10.Victorian bone disease. Football banning orders totalling

:09:10. > :09:12.nearly 200 years have been handed down to hooligans who fought with

:09:12. > :09:15.police after their team was relegated out of the Football

:09:15. > :09:20.League. It follows a five-month

:09:20. > :09:23.investigation into trouble which fled at Burton Albion. Liz Copper

:09:23. > :09:29.was in court. These were the scenes after the

:09:29. > :09:35.final whistle at Burton Albion's match against Grimsby Town last May.

:09:35. > :09:37.Burton's 3-0 win meant that Grimsby were relegated. Fans invaded the

:09:37. > :09:43.pitch, ribbed top advertising hoardings and attacked police and

:09:43. > :09:48.match stewards. These people were not football fans.

:09:48. > :09:52.The real Grimsby fans were appalled and shocked by their behaviour. You

:09:52. > :09:57.are talking about grown men, not youngsters. They had been drinking

:09:57. > :10:02.since the early morning. 49 Grimsby fans have been

:10:02. > :10:07.prosecuted. Sentenced today was 42- year-old Stephen Pexman, jailed for

:10:07. > :10:12.20 months after admitting violent disorder. Matthew Jones, a former

:10:12. > :10:18.soldier, received 18 months. Shane Wallace, on the far left, and

:10:18. > :10:23.Andrew Blackett, in the centre, were imprisoned for 18 and 20

:10:23. > :10:27.months respectively. All received football banning order it -- orders.

:10:27. > :10:31.But police had to trawl through hours of CCTV footage.

:10:31. > :10:37.It was very frightening for the families and the members of the

:10:38. > :10:42.club. One witness was a steward for Grimsby who said it was the worst

:10:42. > :10:50.act of violence he had seen. The judge said what he had seen

:10:50. > :10:54.showed ugliness, yob that -- Yori and thuggery. He said compared to

:10:54. > :11:00.everyday life the football match was a minor affair but does he

:11:00. > :11:03.jailed had behind it -- behaved as if they were part of a national

:11:03. > :11:07.disaster. He said the game of football would suffer because of

:11:07. > :11:12.their actions. Five men have been arrested after a

:11:12. > :11:16.gun was fired in Stoke-on-Trent. Police were called to Stream in

:11:16. > :11:19.Dresden after midnight. Two men were taken to University Hospital

:11:19. > :11:23.of North Staffordshire and treated for minor injuries. Both have since

:11:23. > :11:28.been discharged. We don't have things like this

:11:29. > :11:34.happen every day and it is a rare occurrence. I want to assure the

:11:34. > :11:40.community of Stoke-on-Trent but that is the case. We are out in

:11:40. > :11:45.number for people to speak to. If you are overweight or have

:11:45. > :11:49.diabetes, your doctor may ask you to watch what you eat. But doctors

:11:49. > :11:56.say a restrictive diet may alter how your brain response to food.

:11:56. > :12:00.These changes may make it harder to follow a healthy diet.

:12:00. > :12:05.These are pictures from a university of Birmingham experiment

:12:05. > :12:09.aiming to answer the question, why do some people find it so hard to

:12:09. > :12:19.stick to a healthy diet? Why do people find it hard to

:12:19. > :12:27.change their way of life and others find it restrictive? They feel

:12:27. > :12:31.deprived of many things. Cakes and biscuits and hamburgers.

:12:31. > :12:37.The researchers scanned do brains of obese people, some with diabetes,

:12:37. > :12:39.as they looked at images of food, and it turned out that those with

:12:39. > :12:45.diabetes had brains with very different responses to those

:12:45. > :12:51.pictures. Patients who have higher activation

:12:51. > :12:57.in brain areas are involved in emotion. Those people had

:12:57. > :13:00.difficulty controlling their diet. The thinking is, it is the

:13:00. > :13:04.restrictive diet that people with diabetes have to follow that is

:13:04. > :13:08.causing these differences. Ironically, these differences are

:13:08. > :13:12.one reason it is harder for these people to follow a restrictive diet.

:13:13. > :13:16.It is also possible that obese people effectively trained their

:13:16. > :13:21.brains to respond more strongly to fatty food.

:13:21. > :13:26.If you have been used to eating a lot of fatty food and you are

:13:26. > :13:31.accustomed to that, it will be more difficult to change your life

:13:31. > :13:36.around and make lifestyle changes to reduce the amount of fat and

:13:36. > :13:41.follow a healthy diet. To understand what is going on we

:13:41. > :13:51.need more research but it is very real, it seems. The scientist even

:13:51. > :13:52.

:13:52. > :13:58.found that, the fattier the food, The scientists are particularly

:13:58. > :14:07.keen to talk to teenagers, help the wide-awake, all of type 2 diabetes.

:14:08. > :14:15.You can find out more and our blog. You get to take home in a imager

:14:15. > :14:19.your brain, not too many people can say that.

:14:19. > :14:26.Thanks for joining us. Still ahead, if darker clouds

:14:26. > :14:35.covering -- gut dark clouds gathering over Coventry City. I'll

:14:35. > :14:43.have all of the weekend's where there. -- all have been weekend's

:14:43. > :14:50.weather. There are calls for the NHS to consider checking pregnant

:14:50. > :14:56.women are to protect babies from the Victorian disease rickets.

:14:56. > :15:01.It follows a study in inner-city Birmingham which found almost one

:15:01. > :15:08.in two Asian women were vitamin D are deficient. Rickets was

:15:08. > :15:16.associated with the Victoria my era, and 1930s depression.

:15:16. > :15:19.In children it is almost always synonymous with bent legs. Doctors

:15:19. > :15:26.tested 200 pork pregnant women and found that almost half were

:15:26. > :15:30.deficient with the -- efficient in vitamin D. There were higher levels

:15:30. > :15:40.in deficiency in some ethnic groups. In African and Caribbean are women

:15:40. > :15:46.we found to a deficiency in over 60 % of the people we studied. That

:15:46. > :15:50.has to do with a number of back tears, skin pigmentation, how much

:15:50. > :15:58.light your skin sees, and whether you are taking supplements.

:15:58. > :16:07.This doctor, Dr Helen Grindulis, says she sees a lot of women with

:16:07. > :16:12.deficiencies. A few recent Casey's, with had an infant with a delay,

:16:12. > :16:21.about nine months old, they had a deficiency. We have had a young

:16:21. > :16:25.baby, a few weeks old, who had the seizures duty vitamin D deficiency.

:16:25. > :16:31.The Department of Health advises groups of women to take vitamin

:16:31. > :16:37.pills. Doctors say the best source of vitamin D he is sunlight. You

:16:37. > :16:47.can also get it by eating it aches and oily fish, also by taking

:16:47. > :16:47.

:16:47. > :16:52.supplements. -- a gas. It seems more than anything the great

:16:52. > :16:57.outdoors can also help prevent a disease associated with a bygone

:16:57. > :17:00.era. The Department of Health is

:17:00. > :17:05.reviewing the evidence on this, there is more about it on our

:17:05. > :17:12.Facebook page. The owners of Coventry City have

:17:12. > :17:16.met with a party interested with a possible hate -- possible takeover.

:17:16. > :17:25.The club have had their worst start to a season for 43 years. They have

:17:25. > :17:32.been out of the Premier League almost 10 years.

:17:32. > :17:42.The right-footed free-kick go is in. Let the City had scored full stop

:17:42. > :17:42.

:17:43. > :17:47.the header hit the post, it has gone in! Face lot in the rebound!

:17:47. > :17:51.It has been a dreadful start to the season but Coventry City, they have

:17:51. > :17:55.lost all three games in the Championship, and they out of the

:17:55. > :18:00.Carling Cup. They have had the use of 317 year-

:18:00. > :18:04.old players last week. You might expect the mood to be down in the

:18:04. > :18:09.training ground, but it is not according to the manager. We are

:18:09. > :18:14.disappointed of course, we have not got what we wanted for our

:18:14. > :18:18.performances. If we keep doing the right things it will come. Geoff

:18:18. > :18:23.Foster watches all of their games for BBC Warwickshire, he says that

:18:23. > :18:27.the manager has their hands tied -- has his hands tied until they have

:18:27. > :18:35.a takeover. The fans want to see some more

:18:35. > :18:41.investments. They want to see it taken over. The club is 30 million

:18:41. > :18:48.in debt, if they cannot turn it around a they lose half million

:18:48. > :18:53.pounds a month. They met potential at best it -- potential investors,

:18:53. > :19:00.but the meeting ended badly. They said that no formal offer was put

:19:00. > :19:08.on the table. The previous offer of 1 was totally unacceptable. What

:19:08. > :19:14.now after an increasingly desperate start to the season? Dan and joins

:19:14. > :19:23.us now, are there any sign of improvement.

:19:23. > :19:29.-- any signs in prevent? Not really come -- not really, unless they can

:19:29. > :19:35.get new investment the team will not improve. It is bad times. They

:19:35. > :19:44.have lost a free of their best players, Ciaran Westwood, Aron

:19:44. > :19:51.Gunnarsson, and striker Marlon King. They are playing pretty well, not

:19:51. > :19:57.having the rub of the green. The fans must be feeling miserable? In

:19:57. > :20:05.some ways, they are kind that used to it. It has gone so far, they

:20:05. > :20:11.have had enough. There are talk about process staying at tomorrow's

:20:11. > :20:19.game -- there is talk about protesting after tomorrow's game.

:20:19. > :20:25.The fans might stand up. They are not happy. Thank you very much.

:20:25. > :20:29.can see the look -- the best coverage will be on BBC local radio.

:20:29. > :20:36.Meanwhile England's cricketers are continuing to dominate against

:20:36. > :20:46.India. Ian Bell scored 174, England scored

:20:46. > :20:49.

:20:49. > :20:54.473 - 2. He was watched by a fellow Aston Villa than, David Cameron.

:20:54. > :21:03.Thousands of music fans have been causing gridlock. It is the start

:21:03. > :21:10.and V Festival it in Staffordshire. The Acts do not take to stage until

:21:10. > :21:15.tomorrow. Ben is alive at the campsite. It is worse than

:21:15. > :21:21.expected? It has been tough for some. He took us four hours to get

:21:21. > :21:30.here from Birmingham. There are 85,000 people each day going to be

:21:30. > :21:36.watching Act here. -- watching it ats here. They are crowding into

:21:36. > :21:42.Weston Park. There is a lot of traffic, delays, it will be

:21:42. > :21:46.worthwhile when you see the acts you are playing. If you think of a

:21:46. > :21:49.music festival this is probably what you imagine.

:21:49. > :21:53.At the be best the bulk they are offering accommodation with a bit

:21:54. > :21:59.of style. These pop up hotel rooms from a company based in Chipping

:21:59. > :22:06.Norton, come with dressing-gowns, a power shower and air-conditioning.

:22:06. > :22:11.The cost of staying here is 2,600. It is not going to appeal to

:22:11. > :22:16.everybody, not everyone can afford it, thankfully there are people who

:22:16. > :22:23.want the kind of luxury that we can offer. We can give them an

:22:24. > :22:28.additional option. It is known as "glamping", it is not cheap. A lot

:22:28. > :22:35.of other options can set you back as much as 1,000 for the weekend.

:22:35. > :22:44.Some people are willing to pay. It is much more enjoyable. It is worth

:22:44. > :22:48.it. You have to spend money on experiences. If you are going to do

:22:48. > :22:54.it in style, you might as well include all of the trimmings.

:22:54. > :23:02.well as a massage bows to choose to go a "glamping" can also get a

:23:02. > :23:06.massage, and a haircut. For many people it has taken them one-hour

:23:06. > :23:12.to carry in their suppliers and set up camp. We are going to have a

:23:12. > :23:18.great time. For them to spend 10 times as much as we are, I just do

:23:18. > :23:22.not think it is worth it. A lot of the festival experience is about

:23:23. > :23:28.getting the sunshine. You get the atmosphere. Everyone can be

:23:28. > :23:32.together and setting up means a good at must bear. The last minute

:23:32. > :23:42.preparations are being made to the main stage, amongst those playing

:23:42. > :23:42.

:23:42. > :23:51.his Rihanna or, Eminem and the Arctic Monkeys. Every one of the

:23:51. > :23:55.90,000 people is their own to be here to enjoy themselves. With me

:23:56. > :24:00.is the best of organiser, this is the per as time that you have done

:24:00. > :24:10.it, a bit of a change? This is not usually the best of all

:24:10. > :24:12.

:24:12. > :24:17.way. -- V Festival way. You have popped up hotels, if we want to

:24:17. > :24:26.give people a choice break up and festival experience. It has

:24:26. > :24:31.completely sold out. It took 85 minutes to sell-out. V Festival

:24:31. > :24:41.seems to go to strength -- of the best will seems to go from strength

:24:41. > :24:51.to strength. We try to get a buried line that -- varied line-up.
