:00:59. > :01:03.Good evening. Welcome to Thursday's Midlands Today. Tonight, our hearts
:01:03. > :01:10.are broken forever. The despairing words of two of the children of a
:01:10. > :01:15.couple found murdered at their home. Just a day after out -- Avtar and
:01:15. > :01:21.Carole Kolar were found by their son, a serving police officer, at
:01:21. > :01:28.two of the children spoke at a press conference this afternoon.
:01:28. > :01:32.Our lives and our hearts have been broken forever. They were the
:01:32. > :01:35.sweetest and kindest people. hardest thing anyone can ever do is
:01:35. > :01:44.tell the children that they are never going to see their
:01:44. > :01:49.grandparents again. I have a baby, one week old, and I really do not
:01:49. > :01:56.know where to start. We are all hurting so much inside because they
:01:56. > :02:03.were so special. Catch this person who has taken two of my special
:02:03. > :02:06.people away from us. Avtar and Carole Kolar had been married for
:02:06. > :02:09.40 years. Their friends and neighbours in Handsworth Wood in
:02:09. > :02:14.Birmingham are finding it almost impossible to comes to terms with

:02:30. > :02:33.bad. Very bad. There appeared to be more police in Handsworth Wood
:02:34. > :02:40.today, walking the streets to reassure people that this most
:02:40. > :02:45.brutal of crimes is almost a rare one -- is a rare one. Avtar and
:02:45. > :02:51.Carole Kolar have been described as quiet, sweet people. Daljeet Bilkhu

:03:21. > :03:25.luckily no one was at home. West Midlands Police -- it was a
:03:25. > :03:32.daylight burglary. West Midlands Police are keeping an open mind.
:03:32. > :03:36.The couple's son Jason is a police officer but the police say they do
:03:36. > :03:41.not see a link between that and the deaths. It is something we would
:03:41. > :03:45.consider. No cause of death has been identified yet. Key to the
:03:45. > :03:51.investigation could be the support of the local, largely Sikh,
:03:51. > :03:55.community. I would urge anybody who knows anything, any little
:03:55. > :04:00.information, no matter how small, to come forward. It could be
:04:00. > :04:03.important in solving this crime. arrests have been made but as the
:04:03. > :04:08.Kolar family are spread so powerfully of their loss this
:04:08. > :04:12.afternoon., police say they are following a number of new lines of
:04:12. > :04:16.inquiry. The sense of grief in this community is seen in these floral
:04:16. > :04:23.tributes laid throughout the day today, including this bunch of red

:04:41. > :04:44.Other news. People with learning difficulties fear for their
:04:44. > :04:48.livelihoods after Birmingham City Council announced a review of the
:04:48. > :04:52.factory they work in. Around 90 people work for Shelforce, a
:04:52. > :04:55.council owned door and window manufacturer in Erdington. The city
:04:55. > :05:00.council says it does not envisage compulsory redundancies but the
:05:00. > :05:04.factory might not be able to carry on running as it has been. A public
:05:04. > :05:07.meeting is being held tonight at the Jaguar Sports and Social Club
:05:07. > :05:12.nearby. Our reporter is there. Workers and families must be very
:05:12. > :05:16.worried. They are deeply concerned. There
:05:16. > :05:21.has been a cloud of uncertainty hanging over Shelforce for 18
:05:21. > :05:25.months now. Just behind me, through those double doors, is around 70 or
:05:25. > :05:30.80 people, mainly Shelforce workers, and I watched them sit stony-faced
:05:30. > :05:33.as they were told by Unison that there is a distinct possibility
:05:33. > :05:36.that they could be significant redundancies. You have to remember,
:05:36. > :05:43.if they lose their jobs at Shelforce, because of their
:05:43. > :05:48.learning difficult -- disabilities, they could never get a job again.
:05:48. > :05:52.Amongst the family's here tonight, Shashank Khanduri's family. He is
:05:52. > :05:58.30 and has watched -- worked for Shelforce for eight ears. His
:05:58. > :06:04.mother told me this afternoon that the slowdown in work at the factory
:06:04. > :06:11.has caused him anxiety. When he is sitting, he will worry. You do not
:06:11. > :06:21.have to worry, everybody is in the same boat. That sort of thing he
:06:21. > :06:21.
:06:21. > :06:24.does not understand, and he worries. I can see panic building up on him.
:06:25. > :06:28.Birmingham City Council tell me that Shelforce has been running at
:06:28. > :06:32.a loss for several years now and it has been having to subsidise the
:06:32. > :06:36.business. One possibility, it says, is that it may amalgamated into
:06:36. > :06:40.another part of the council, or perhaps go into partnership with an
:06:40. > :06:44.outside firm, what it calls an organisation close to us, in its
:06:44. > :06:49.statement. With me now is the Labour MP for Erdington, Jack
:06:49. > :06:57.Dromey. Fighting talk from you this evening. What realistically can be
:06:57. > :07:01.done? The Birmingham City Council should be ashamed. For 27 years
:07:01. > :07:07.Shelforce has been a lifeline for the most for Cannes in Birmingham.
:07:07. > :07:11.The men and women in there, for them work is at the centre of their
:07:11. > :07:15.lives. -- the most vulnerable in Birmingham. The council has been
:07:15. > :07:19.running down Shelforce. We need to build up that fine facility and
:07:19. > :07:22.that means spending some of the hundreds of millions of pounds that
:07:22. > :07:27.Birmingham spends on capital works on the windows, the doors that have
:07:27. > :07:32.made by Shelforce. If Labour were in power, you had unprecedented
:07:32. > :07:37.cuts to make. Something has to go, doesn't it? The unkindest cut of
:07:38. > :07:42.all is to close or run down a facility employee in the most
:07:42. > :07:46.vulnerable in our community. They are not responsible for the budget
:07:46. > :07:49.crisis hitting Britain. It is bankers that are responsible. Why
:07:49. > :07:54.should the disabled pay the price? It looks like these proposals will
:07:54. > :07:59.go before the next full council meeting, on February 7th. They are
:07:59. > :08:02.ending here tonight with a very clear message from the workers and
:08:02. > :08:07.families. If there is bad news to come, they want to know sooner
:08:07. > :08:11.rather than later. We will keep you up-to-date.
:08:11. > :08:14.There has been a significant rise in fuel thefts across the West
:08:14. > :08:20.Midlands, mostly involving drivers filling up at petrol stations and
:08:20. > :08:23.driving off without paying. The crime is known as building. In a
:08:23. > :08:28.new twist, they often switched numberplates to avoid
:08:28. > :08:32.identification. -- the crime is known as bilking. Last year there
:08:32. > :08:38.was a 50% rise on the crime compared to the year before.
:08:38. > :08:43.These women are about to commit a crime. They fill their BMW with
:08:43. > :08:50.fuel, belt up and drive off. It is known as bilking and it is on the
:08:50. > :08:55.rise. They do not care. They even look straight into the camera.
:08:55. > :09:00.number of recorded bilkings across the West Midlands has risen from
:09:00. > :09:05.3,600 offences to more than 5,000. Police say it is linked to rising
:09:05. > :09:12.fuel prices. Seven years ago, petrol pump prices across the UK
:09:12. > :09:21.averaged 87p per litre. Today it is one pan 32. Rising fuel prices make
:09:22. > :09:25.web more tempting and thieves more sophisticated. This is how it works.
:09:25. > :09:31.They changed number place so when they are caught on CCTV they cannot
:09:31. > :09:36.be identified, and many are getting away Scot free. This centre in
:09:36. > :09:41.Wolverhampton has come up with a solution, tamper-proof screws.
:09:41. > :09:45.have been offering members of the public a free fitting service so
:09:45. > :09:51.that our security screws on those numberplates prevent them from
:09:51. > :09:58.being stolen. Back in Wolverhampton, this garage owner says it is too
:09:58. > :10:01.little, too late. Last year he lost 6,000 to fuel theft. It is not
:10:01. > :10:06.something I can claim from an insurance policy. Neither am I able
:10:06. > :10:11.to claim the due to from the Government, so I have to bear it.
:10:11. > :10:21.This morning, police released this CCTV image. This man drove off

:10:47. > :10:51.The Transport Secretary has dismissed suggestions that high-
:10:51. > :10:55.speed trains will be exclusively for business customers. Justine
:10:55. > :10:58.Greening was answering questions in the Commons following her decision
:10:58. > :11:04.to approve a high-speed rail network between London and
:11:04. > :11:10.Birmingham. A political editor has been taking it all in Forest. What
:11:10. > :11:13.exactly have they had to say about these fares on H S two? Philip
:11:13. > :11:16.Hammond, the former health secretary, got himself into bother
:11:16. > :11:24.when he suggested that rail services were increasingly likely
:11:24. > :11:27.to be seen as a rich man's toy. A Birmingham MP invited his successor
:11:27. > :11:30.as Transport Secretary to distance herself from any suggestion that
:11:30. > :11:35.High Speed Two would become the exclusive preserve of wealthy
:11:35. > :11:41.businessmen and women. Can the Secretary of State reject the
:11:41. > :11:45.previous Secretary's comments that high-speed rail would only be
:11:45. > :11:49.affordable for business customers? The business case works on an
:11:49. > :11:52.assumption of standard rail fares, as we have on the current network.
:11:52. > :11:58.I am absolutely clear in my mind that the way to make high-speed
:11:58. > :12:01.rail successful is to have as many people use it as possible. We have
:12:01. > :12:05.been hearing High Speed Two will provide an important to Birmingham
:12:05. > :12:08.Airport. What we have to remember here is that High Speed Two is also
:12:08. > :12:12.an integral part of the Government's strategy for UK
:12:12. > :12:16.aviation. They see it as a way of replacing a lot of the domestic air
:12:16. > :12:20.services that so many people up and down Britain used to connect into
:12:20. > :12:23.international routes. So the Transport Secretary was challenged
:12:23. > :12:31.over the fact that the high-speed link to Heathrow airport will not
:12:31. > :12:36.be completed until 2030s. second phase will seek a route to
:12:36. > :12:39.Heathrow. It is wise to point out that the first phase was the
:12:39. > :12:42.Birmingham Airport also connected - - effectively connected as well.
:12:42. > :12:46.There are many criticisms of High Speed Two. One of the biggest is
:12:46. > :12:51.that it will not do much for the wider West Midlands as a Birmingham.
:12:51. > :12:55.Did anybody raise that? Yes, the Labour MP for Dudley North asked if
:12:55. > :13:00.she would consider modifying further the route so that it could
:13:00. > :13:03.actually serve the Black Country. No, she said, flatly. Her decision
:13:03. > :13:07.on the Reid announced on Tuesday was final but she did say that
:13:07. > :13:13.places like the Black Country and other areas would benefit because
:13:13. > :13:19.congestion on existing railway lines would be eased.
:13:19. > :13:22.Still ahead tonight, a Premier League makeover for Molineux. We
:13:22. > :13:26.speak to the chairman about his vision for Wolves.
:13:26. > :13:36.And it has been so mild wizardly, you could be forgiven for thinking
:13:36. > :13:43.
:13:43. > :13:49.it was spring, but winter bites We will talk about grit and the
:13:49. > :13:54.grit set off I'll vote could save councils millions of Pounds because
:13:54. > :13:59.it is aware of recycling. It will prevent more than 30,000 tonnes of
:13:59. > :14:03.waste going to landfill sites every year.
:14:03. > :14:08.Burnt wood near Lichfield, one of the areas where sweeping the roads
:14:08. > :14:14.is no longer just about keeping the neighbour had tidy. It is about
:14:14. > :14:21.saving money and the environment. 2000 tonnes of this road debris is
:14:21. > :14:26.sent to landfill every year. If you consider the Midlands, that is an
:14:26. > :14:30.awful lot of waste that could be recycled. Now the region has the
:14:30. > :14:35.technology to make it happen. A process that described by its
:14:35. > :14:39.operators as a giant washing machine has been built at the site
:14:39. > :14:44.near Wolverhampton. It has cost three-quarters of a million pounds
:14:44. > :14:49.and is able to separate different components of the waste. It comes
:14:49. > :14:54.in on a daily basis, fed into the plant and from that we will be able
:14:54. > :14:58.to derive aggregate score. It is the first time that road sweeping
:14:58. > :15:03.recycling has been done on such a grand scale. Seven councils in the
:15:03. > :15:06.West Midlands have teamed up to send their waste here for recycling.
:15:06. > :15:11.It works out far cheaper than burying it as landfill taxes are
:15:12. > :15:18.rising steeply. If we can make maximum use of that material, we
:15:18. > :15:25.will save money to pay years. Four Warwickshire a loner we are looking
:15:26. > :15:30.at recycling some 10,000 and that is about 800,000. It is estimated
:15:30. > :15:35.10 million in total will be saved over seven years, proving the old
:15:35. > :15:40.adage that where there is a market, there is brass.
:15:40. > :15:44.That is really good news. It has been another of bad wigs for the
:15:44. > :15:48.high street with more stores going into administration but when an
:15:48. > :15:53.independent bookstore announced it was to close after 23 years,
:15:53. > :15:58.residents decided to do something. They formed a co-operative and are
:15:58. > :16:03.about to open a bookshop of their own.
:16:03. > :16:07.The hills and Edward Elgar - just two of the reasons tourists come to
:16:07. > :16:12.visit Malvern and it is that at the trade that has helped many of the
:16:12. > :16:17.shops survive during the economic downturn. Not all are so lucky.
:16:17. > :16:21.This bookstore has had to call it a day after 23 years. Disheartened by
:16:21. > :16:27.the news, book loving friends decided to start their own shop.
:16:27. > :16:32.And formed a co-operative. We have all got very varied backgrounds, a
:16:32. > :16:37.huge range of expertise and interest and we can bring all that
:16:37. > :16:40.into the one bookshop. Not one of the seven members of the co-
:16:40. > :16:45.operative has any retail experience, but they already have the premises
:16:45. > :16:51.and work on their new shop is under way. It is a lot of hard work to be
:16:51. > :16:56.done and decisions to be made, but we have very different skills to
:16:56. > :17:00.bring to it and a lot of knowledge. We will all work together and it
:17:00. > :17:04.will be a success. Malvern has more independently owned shops than most
:17:04. > :17:10.towns and many like this one are doing well. Open six years ago,
:17:10. > :17:13.they have had their best Christmas trading figures ever. So can the
:17:13. > :17:20.co-operative be successful? The man behind the shop believes they have
:17:20. > :17:23.a chance. The large retailers cannot offer at that level of
:17:23. > :17:29.service the independent retailers can. If they get that right, they
:17:29. > :17:33.can do quite well. The bookshop will include a cafe and whole
:17:33. > :17:36.community events did boost income. Be a co-operative, the financial
:17:36. > :17:43.risk is spread and all of those involved are being realistic about
:17:43. > :17:48.the future. We are conscious of the risk but we think it can work. We
:17:48. > :17:52.will never make a lot of money, but we think we can have an exciting
:17:52. > :17:58.project that will benefit the town centre. If everything goes to plan,
:17:58. > :18:08.they hope to open the doors in March.
:18:08. > :18:09.
:18:09. > :18:13.We can call that the Big Society. Sports time. Robbie Keane can -- 11

:21:52. > :22:02.what we have to say behind closed doors. One the new will look
:22:02. > :22:05.
:22:05. > :22:12.It is good to hear a German fronting up. All that has happened
:22:12. > :22:19.at Birmingham City, we had never heard anything from the board, it
:22:19. > :22:23.is a shame because they do not talk to us. But it is nice to hear that
:22:23. > :22:28.from Steve Morgan. Before you go, tell us about
:22:28. > :22:34.Coventry City. Striker Lukas Jutkewicz is on the
:22:34. > :22:40.way to Middlesbrough for 1.5 million. Nikola Zigic scored two
:22:40. > :22:50.goals for Birmingham City last night beating Ipswich 2-1, but he
:22:50. > :22:59.
:22:59. > :23:04.Scientists, inventor, artist, Leonardo da Vinci's dinners
:23:04. > :23:07.resonates through history. An exhibition of his work in London
:23:07. > :23:12.has been a sell-out and there is expected to be a similar buzz when
:23:12. > :23:17.it comes to Birmingham. It is the first time any of his work has been
:23:18. > :23:21.shown in the city. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
:23:21. > :23:26.is the first venue for a national tour of 10 drawings by Leonardo da
:23:26. > :23:31.Vinci to celebrate the Queen's diamond jubilee. It is expected to
:23:31. > :23:38.attract huge attention. It is the first time we have had works by
:23:38. > :23:42.Leonardo in Birmingham, so it will create a lot of interest. We think
:23:43. > :23:47.probably 25,000 potentially, maybe more. The drawings are from the
:23:47. > :23:51.World Collection at Windsor Castle and the senior curator says it is
:23:51. > :23:56.amazing to imagine the master holding them 500 years ago.
:23:56. > :24:04.drawings illustrate all aspects of Leonardo's activity. He was a
:24:04. > :24:10.painter, sculptor, architect, scientist. I have tried to select
:24:10. > :24:14.in these drawings examples of every aspect of that. A major exhibition
:24:14. > :24:18.of Leonardo's work has attracted crowds to the National Gallery in
:24:18. > :24:22.London with tickets selling out. This display in Birmingham is
:24:22. > :24:28.smaller and more intimate and free. Visitors will be able to get up
:24:28. > :24:34.close to some of the work of this world famous artist, architect,
:24:34. > :24:39.engineer and scientist, engaging at first hand with perhaps one of the
:24:39. > :24:44.greatest minds of all time. For the last 15 years of his life, Leonardo
:24:44. > :24:48.regarded himself as a scientist incorporating research in art. This
:24:48. > :24:52.is how Leonardo looked with a reputation for arrogance. But one
:24:53. > :25:00.drawing thought to be one of his last is a self portrait of how he
:25:00. > :25:05.felt as he aged. Kind of grotesque but also a rather pathetic. It is a
:25:05. > :25:09.study of decay and Leonardo was conscious of his own body failing.
:25:09. > :25:14.It captures something of Leonardo's sense of imminent death. All the
:25:14. > :25:21.finishing touches are being made ready for when the doors open to
:25:21. > :25:31.the public for three months. It will be busy. He was pretty
:25:31. > :25:32.
:25:32. > :25:38.amazing. That exhibition of those drawings opens at Birmingham Museum
:25:38. > :25:42.and Art Gallery tomorrow and it is free. Now take a look at the
:25:43. > :25:47.free. Now take a look at the weather.
:25:47. > :25:49.For a few days we had experienced way above average temperatures but
:25:50. > :25:55.because of that the drop will appear more drastic as things
:25:56. > :26:01.appear more colder. It applies during the days and nights.
:26:01. > :26:07.Temperatures starting to dip to below average. The reason for that,
:26:07. > :26:12.we saw a cold front coming through today. Because this high-pressure
:26:12. > :26:18.positions itself over us, the winds will be lighter, perfect conditions
:26:18. > :26:21.for frost and fog. All of those elements tonight. Skies clearing
:26:21. > :26:29.right across the board and temperatures dipping down to minus
:26:29. > :26:33.one Celsius in raw parts. A frost developing across most parts and
:26:34. > :26:39.also some fog developing mostly in the south-west of the region. That
:26:39. > :26:44.could linger because of the light winds tomorrow and if it does so,
:26:44. > :26:52.temperatures will struggle to lift. Generally a nice day with a lot of
:26:52. > :27:00.sunshine and it will be dry. It is the temperatures that are the main
:27:00. > :27:05.concern. Temperatures of six Celsius. Tomorrow night will be
:27:05. > :27:14.even colder. Skies clearing once again and light winds and
:27:14. > :27:19.temperatures dropping down to minus one Celsius. For the weekend, at we
:27:19. > :27:27.pave the way for much colder conditions. Highs of only four
:27:27. > :27:29.Celsius. But it is looking sunny at least. Thank you.
:27:30. > :27:33.least. Thank you. Just one main had line tonight: our
