:00:49. > :00:51.Good evening and welcome to Friday's Midlands Today from the

:00:51. > :00:53.BBC. Tonight - police investigate an

:00:54. > :00:59.abortion clinic following claims doctors agreed to carry out

:00:59. > :01:01.terminations on the basis of the unborn babies' sex.

:01:01. > :01:04.The Department of Health's also involved in the inquiry after the

:01:04. > :01:07.Calthorpe Clinic in Edgbaston in Birmingham was issued with a

:01:07. > :01:14.Warning Notice following an inspection. Our health

:01:14. > :01:18.correspondent Michele Paduano has the details.

:01:18. > :01:22.Outside the Calthorpe Clinic today, religious campaigners maintained a

:01:22. > :01:27.vigil against abortion throughout Lent. For them, abortion due to sex

:01:27. > :01:31.is just another wrong. It shows the mentality people have, that the

:01:31. > :01:36.child is a product, it is something that would determine for ourselves

:01:36. > :01:40.and we choose and to elect for ourselves rather than a gift to us.

:01:40. > :01:45.That just shows how widespread this is now. Abortion is available on

:01:45. > :01:50.demand. The Calthorpe Clinic in Birmingham was caught on camera

:01:50. > :02:00.Henin and -- undercover investigation. This doctor was told

:02:00. > :02:07.

:02:08. > :02:13.the baby wasn't wanted because it In a separate development, the gay

:02:13. > :02:18.equality development has made two inspections following a tip-off. I

:02:18. > :02:22.understand that the Department of Health has been informed. The

:02:23. > :02:28.police have been asked to investigate all areas of concern.

:02:28. > :02:33.If this has happened, not only is it a criminal act, but it entail

:02:33. > :02:36.the professionals deliberately falsifying the reports, which

:02:36. > :02:39.necessarily accompany any termination of pregnancy. It is a

:02:39. > :02:43.shocking thing to have happened, we will follow it up urgently and

:02:44. > :02:47.thoroughly. When scanning Beefeaters, staff are where the

:02:47. > :02:52.agenda may be an issue, and do not routinely tell the mother the

:02:52. > :02:58.baby's sex. Whilst we wouldn't actively looked to sex a baby, if

:02:58. > :03:02.it is something that is easily seen, and the woman once the information,

:03:02. > :03:05.it is not something we would deny at any time. The Calthorpe Clinic

:03:05. > :03:15.says it is conducting its own internal investigation. It cannot

:03:15. > :03:21.say any more at this stage. What happens to the clinic while these

:03:21. > :03:25.investigations are under way? just wandered into the clinic and

:03:25. > :03:29.spoken to the general manager. She insists it is business as usual. So

:03:29. > :03:33.whatever has happened, it has not been so serious that they ever to

:03:33. > :03:37.close anything down. This clinic has been in existence by the 40

:03:37. > :03:41.years, deals with thousands of patients across the Midlands, both

:03:41. > :03:45.in Birmingham and Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent. The one thing we do

:03:45. > :03:50.know is that the doctor himself has been suspended pending their

:03:50. > :03:56.investigation. Early indications along these investigations could

:03:56. > :04:00.take? There are three separate investigations. The care quality

:04:00. > :04:05.commission, that could be over fairly quickly. They talk about a

:04:05. > :04:08.report being out shortly, it could be weeks or months. With respect to

:04:08. > :04:12.the police and General Medical Council investigations, if there is

:04:12. > :04:16.substance to them, they could take considerable time to investigate.

:04:16. > :04:25.It is usual that if there are to be charges, it could be years rather

:04:25. > :04:35.the mumps. -- than months. A still to come, could a work experience

:04:35. > :04:38.

:04:38. > :04:41.scheme ease the problem? The distraught family of a man who

:04:41. > :04:43.went missing within hours of his twenty first birthday celebration

:04:43. > :04:46.are tonight asking the public for help in finding him.

:04:46. > :04:49.Tom Haddock had enjoyed a celebration family lunch at his

:04:49. > :04:51.mother's home. He left for a night out with friends in Lichfield, but

:04:51. > :04:54.apparently never arrived. Police are now combing the area and

:04:54. > :04:58.appealing for information as to his whereabouts.

:04:58. > :05:02.A specialist team of officers searched the canal near Fradley.

:05:02. > :05:07.Tom Haddock has been missing since last Saturday, where he headed off

:05:07. > :05:13.for a night out. At home, his family face an agonising wait.

:05:13. > :05:21.is really hard, because your friends are contacting all the time,

:05:21. > :05:23.and you just can't... He has never done this before. He would stay

:05:24. > :05:27.over at a friend's house may be overnight and come back in the

:05:27. > :05:32.morning, but he has never been gone for this long without contact. It

:05:32. > :05:37.is not like him. A Facebook page is helping the search. Tom's family

:05:37. > :05:41.say he had thoroughly enjoyed a lunch to celebrate his 21st. That

:05:41. > :05:45.night it is it off to Lichfield, deciding against waiting for a taxi

:05:45. > :05:50.at home. It looks like he didn't get there, looks like changed his

:05:50. > :05:58.mind. I don't understand it, he was so determined to go to Lichfield.

:05:58. > :06:02.He got Picts from friends saying it where they were there not stop --.

:06:02. > :06:08.He was last seen here at Fradley junction on Saturday night, when he

:06:09. > :06:13.spoke to a boat on and asked for directions to Bromley Hayes. It is

:06:13. > :06:18.and how's walk along the canal towpath. The mystery doesn't end

:06:18. > :06:23.there. His sister had a missed call at 10:30pm, and a friend received a

:06:23. > :06:28.call at 2:30am, but was into noisy and atmosphere to hear it properly.

:06:28. > :06:32.From the moment he has gone missing, I have had a dedicated search team,

:06:32. > :06:37.both land and water search. Currently we have a water search in

:06:37. > :06:41.the canal, by the specialist shallow water team. Tom was

:06:41. > :06:46.planning another celebration near his father's home near Cheltenham

:06:46. > :06:51.this weekend. I am really confused by these missing hours. If I knew

:06:51. > :06:56.where he was, I could deal with it, but just not knowing where he is is

:06:56. > :07:04.just destroying us. Tonight, police confirmed no evidence had been

:07:04. > :07:07.found in the canal. The search is now widening.

:07:07. > :07:11.And if you have any information, please call the new police 101

:07:11. > :07:14.number. And the grieving family of a man

:07:14. > :07:16.who was killed when his moped collided with a lorry in

:07:17. > :07:19.Staffordshire have appealed for the driver to come forward. Benjamin

:07:20. > :07:27.Warrington, who was 24, was driving along the A38 near Streethay early

:07:27. > :07:32.on Tuesday morning when he was hit by a tipper truck which didn't stop.

:07:32. > :07:37.Could anyone else was travelling on the road on Tuesday 21st February

:07:37. > :07:43.at 525, who thinks they may have information, please contact the

:07:43. > :07:49.investigation team. A special plea goes out of the lorry driver of the

:07:49. > :07:57.HTV to come forward. Benjamin is in our thoughts and will be badly

:07:57. > :08:00.missed. Hundreds of unpaid work experience placements are being

:08:00. > :08:04.offered in Wolverhampton in a new attempt to tackle rising youth

:08:04. > :08:08.unemployment. Despite the economic climate, local businesses are being

:08:08. > :08:17.urged to find time and money to nurture the next generation of

:08:17. > :08:23.workers. And time is pressing - with a sharp increase in the number

:08:24. > :08:26.of 18-24 year olds out of work. Is Mr White House available?

:08:26. > :08:29.After being unemployed for three months, Jess Williams took a gamble

:08:30. > :08:34.on unpaid work experience - the 21- year-old impressed and landed a job

:08:34. > :08:39.at Wolverhampton Homes. I felt that the whole experience really

:08:39. > :08:43.benefited me. It led me to feel I am significant and I can make a

:08:43. > :08:47.difference. It enabled me to gain all the skills I need to help me

:08:47. > :08:49.gain employment. For the first time, businesses in Wolverhampton have

:08:49. > :08:54.signed up to offer hundreds of eight-week work placements. And

:08:54. > :08:59.this is why. Queues around the block at City jobs fairs, and the

:08:59. > :09:02.busiest Jobcentres in the West Midlands. If you are aged between

:09:02. > :09:07.18 and 24, chances are you know someone who is claiming jobseeker's

:09:07. > :09:13.allowance. In Wolverhampton, around 15% of that age group to just that.

:09:13. > :09:22.And that is twice the national average. So can unpaid work lift

:09:22. > :09:26.Wolverhampton's 1 is? -- won his? This week, campaigners dubbed the

:09:26. > :09:29.government's unpaid work scheme slave labour. Tesco have since

:09:29. > :09:34.decided to offer pay. The government insists it is helping

:09:34. > :09:38.people off benefit and into work. It is to give young people an

:09:39. > :09:43.opportunity. The Labour MP behind a separate Wolverhampton scheme says

:09:43. > :09:47.it is voluntary. No one has to take part in this. We are making

:09:47. > :09:51.opportunities available for young people. We hope they will take part.

:09:51. > :09:59.Here is a chance if you want to take one. This is not about press-

:09:59. > :10:02.ganging people into doing something. Low Hill - one of the most deprived

:10:02. > :10:04.parts of Wolverhampton - will be among the first areas to be

:10:04. > :10:09.targeted. We see, unfortunately, in the homes we manage, many people

:10:09. > :10:13.who have been without a job in some time, and in some cases their

:10:13. > :10:18.parents have to. So it is ambition in the next year to target some of

:10:18. > :10:23.these placements to our tenants's sons and daughters. Jess Williams

:10:23. > :10:30.is lucky - not all work experience ends in a job. But a little goes a

:10:30. > :10:33.long way in a city fearing a lost generation of workers.

:10:33. > :10:35.As the Government continues to push through its health reforms, the BBC

:10:35. > :10:41.Sunday Politics programme has discovered the NHS in this region

:10:41. > :10:45.needs to save almost 2 billion by 2015.

:10:45. > :10:53.It is because of the increasing elderly population, the rising

:10:53. > :10:57.price of drugs and new technologies. Our reporter has this.

:10:57. > :11:02.Here in the West Midlands, the NHS streets around 3 million people

:11:02. > :11:09.every month. David Brooks is in New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton for

:11:09. > :11:13.a fairly routine hernia operation. But his -- it is not the first time

:11:13. > :11:17.he has gone under the knife. I have had a cancer operation, heart

:11:17. > :11:24.problems, I have had bowel problems which are came in for last year,

:11:24. > :11:28.which I now continuing with the treatment, G two that. -- due to

:11:28. > :11:33.that. That is going to be repaired. Who knows what will happen in the

:11:33. > :11:38.future? At 60, Mr Brooks seems to have made plenty of use of the NHS,

:11:38. > :11:45.but with the average age for men in the West Midlands now 77 and one in

:11:45. > :11:50.81, the chances are he will lead the NHS in the future. The NHS, the

:11:50. > :11:54.problem with it is because we are living longer, more of us are

:11:54. > :11:57.needing expensive treatment and operations like these. But our

:11:57. > :12:01.demand for better health care doesn't stop in the operating

:12:01. > :12:06.theatre. There are around a dozen staff working in this laboratory,

:12:06. > :12:10.making up cancer drugs like these, and they're not cheap. Add all the

:12:10. > :12:15.cost and the fact there is less money in the coffers, and you get

:12:15. > :12:20.the kind of pressure that means that by 2015, we need to save 1.8

:12:20. > :12:25.billion from the health care budget in our region. I have noticed in

:12:25. > :12:29.the last four or five years how technology and the advancement is

:12:29. > :12:34.increasing, therefore the cost is increasing. We have got to be able

:12:34. > :12:38.to find ways of saving money to be able to keep meeting that demand.

:12:38. > :12:42.Health Wise, here in the West Midlands, we are living longer,

:12:42. > :12:52.healthier lives, but financially, it seems the NHS is a victim of its

:12:52. > :12:56.But we are joined by Patrick Burns. The first of all, how do these cuts

:12:56. > :13:04.square with the government's promise to bring face the NHS?

:13:04. > :13:08.Earth earth -- ring fence. They are having to produce these

:13:08. > :13:13.huge amounts of money from within those existing budgets to foot the

:13:13. > :13:17.bill for all these hi-tech, high cost of treatment that an ageing

:13:17. > :13:22.population needs. It is really that they are victims of their run

:13:22. > :13:27.success. This is coming at a time when the

:13:27. > :13:30.government has got a fight on its hands with the health bill.

:13:30. > :13:34.It is embroiled in the House of Lords, and we are hearing

:13:34. > :13:40.speculation that some Liberal Democrat MPs are siding with Labour,

:13:40. > :13:45.privately, saying that it should be dropped. On the wider front here,

:13:45. > :13:48.help is one of those issues at the last election on which the

:13:48. > :13:52.Conservatives regained the combatants of what we would

:13:52. > :13:58.probably call Middle England, they won a 15 it seats in our part of

:13:58. > :14:03.the country. What happens next? What

:14:03. > :14:06.developments will there be in the next few days?

:14:06. > :14:11.Fee the Royal College of Physicians is holding a meeting on Monday to

:14:11. > :14:14.discuss whether or not they should come out against the proposals. I

:14:14. > :14:21.will be talking to a Birmingham hospital consultant who has

:14:21. > :14:24.triggered that meeting on Sunday. Sunday Politics is on Sunday on BBC

:14:24. > :14:28.One. Hundreds of children are taking

:14:28. > :14:32.part in the country's largest survey into how a computer games

:14:32. > :14:37.and a lack of sleep on having an impact on childhood obesity.

:14:37. > :14:40.One quarter of 11 year-olds in hour region are overweight. The charity

:14:40. > :14:45.behind the study says many face a future of heart disease and

:14:45. > :14:50.diabetes. It is the first lesson of the day,

:14:50. > :14:52.and one which could help change the health of the nation's children.

:14:52. > :14:55.Sixth-formers at Bordesley Green Girls' School in Birmingham

:14:55. > :15:00.supervise younger pupils in the country's largest-ever study into

:15:00. > :15:03.the effect of sleep deprivation on adolescence. It is linked to

:15:03. > :15:07.obesity and how much technology is to blame.

:15:07. > :15:14.We are no longer just interested in TV viewing, we are looking at

:15:14. > :15:18.laptop and internet use, social networking, video gaming, reading,

:15:18. > :15:21.music. The World Health Organisation

:15:21. > :15:31.estimates the meet -- rate of the Beastie in children has tripled in

:15:31. > :15:31.

:15:31. > :15:35.20 years. In the Midlands, one quarter of 11-year-olds are obese.

:15:35. > :15:40.Sleep deprivation and obesity could be linked through a number of ways.

:15:40. > :15:45.There is life style, a lack of sleep leading to a snacking and

:15:45. > :15:48.unhealthy eating culture. There is also an interesting hormonal

:15:48. > :15:54.factors, and we know there are certain hormones which change in

:15:54. > :15:57.our bodies if we lack sleep, and they could also play a part.

:15:57. > :16:02.These watches will be fitted to 800 children across Birmingham, which

:16:02. > :16:07.they will wear for a week. It will monitor their sleep

:16:07. > :16:13.patterns, for example, how often they wake up in the night. They

:16:13. > :16:19.will also fill in this diary. I go to sleep at 9:30pm, and I

:16:19. > :16:24.think I get a lot of sleep. I watch TV before I go to bed, and

:16:24. > :16:29.I go on the laptop. It is an eye-opener for the

:16:29. > :16:33.children themselves to see what factors affect their sleep.

:16:33. > :16:38.They will be monitored for six years. If the links are confirmed,

:16:38. > :16:43.researchers hope it will lead many to make lifestyle changes.

:16:43. > :16:48.Still ahead, the countdown continues to the London Olympics,

:16:48. > :16:53.and we are with young athletes at the Black Country Games.

:16:53. > :17:03.And it has been a week of rising temperatures. Coleshill was the hot

:17:03. > :17:09.

:17:10. > :17:14.spot yesterday, but what goes up I thought he would say that!

:17:14. > :17:20.Find a see -- finally some news on a new manager at Wolves.

:17:20. > :17:23.The search is finally over. At least until May. Mick McCarthy's

:17:23. > :17:28.right back -- right hand Madhur Terry Connor has got the job until

:17:28. > :17:31.the end of the season. Did has been a frustrating time for Taoiseach

:17:31. > :17:37.fans, but today, chairman Steve Morgan insisted the club has

:17:37. > :17:43.nothing to be embarrassed about. Wolves.

:17:43. > :17:47.They have searched high and low to the north and the self-. The a

:17:47. > :17:54.couple have turned them down. But finally they found the answer

:17:54. > :17:59.on their own doorstep. We set out to find the right man,

:17:59. > :18:02.and we believe we have. Certainly until the end of the season. He has

:18:02. > :18:07.been in the Premier League for the last three seasons and was there a

:18:07. > :18:10.few years ago, so we have a man with Premier League experience.

:18:10. > :18:19.It is a great honour to be asked to look after the team for the

:18:19. > :18:21.remainder of the season. We have unfinished business. We have done

:18:21. > :18:25.two seasons where we have managed to survive, and we want to make it

:18:25. > :18:29.three. If Terry Connor was almost

:18:30. > :18:34.speechless, so were many Taoiseach fans, who wonder why some

:18:34. > :18:42.candidates are not willing to run over hot coals to get the top job

:18:42. > :18:47.at Molineux. -- Taoiseach. How frustrating is is that the

:18:47. > :18:52.other people do not want the job? There have been a lot of untruths

:18:52. > :18:56.spoken in the press over the last 10 days or so. They have been some

:18:56. > :19:00.complete rubbish that has been printed.

:19:00. > :19:04.How much the chief executive and chairman of argued to the contrary,

:19:04. > :19:09.the efforts to recruit a new manager had appeared ham-fisted at

:19:09. > :19:13.best to many supporters. But now, after 12 days of speculation, they

:19:13. > :19:17.have finally chosen the sitting tenant all along.

:19:17. > :19:22.I think the process we followed has been a really diligent,

:19:22. > :19:25.professional approach in appointing what is, as Steve has said, a

:19:25. > :19:29.really important appointment. I have nothing to be embarrassed

:19:29. > :19:33.about, this club has got nothing to be embarrassed about. This club has

:19:33. > :19:40.got everything to be proud about. We have handled things right and

:19:40. > :19:46.proper all along. The players say that -- and Terry,

:19:46. > :19:50.says he has not yet earned the right to be called gaffer. -- Terry

:19:50. > :19:54.Connor. The internet has been alive with

:19:54. > :19:59.comments from fans over the last few days. There has been a lot of

:19:59. > :20:06.criticism. Lot of criticism on Facebook from

:20:06. > :20:10.the Wolves fans. One person says they are a pathetic,

:20:11. > :20:16.laughing stock and were in favour of sacking Mick McCarthy, but to do

:20:16. > :20:20.it without a plan is a shocking. Andrew says it is a joke. No

:20:20. > :20:28.leadership or direction, and he accuses the club of trying to do it

:20:28. > :20:32.on the cheap. There is one from Christopher. He

:20:32. > :20:42.says he does not want to judge Connor without giving him a chance,

:20:42. > :20:42.

:20:42. > :20:46.and he will support him because he supports Taoiseach. -- Wolves.

:20:46. > :20:51.The very best coverage of all our teams will be tomorrow on your BBC

:20:51. > :20:54.local radio station. It starts at 2 o'clock.

:20:54. > :20:59.One of the biggest motocross events of the year is being held in

:20:59. > :21:02.Shropshire on Sunday. Riders from 15 countries will travel to
