:00:00. > :00:00.London. That is all

:00:00. > :00:07.Albion take on near neighbours Aston Villa. Hello and welcome to Midlands

:00:08. > :00:09.Today. The headlines tonight: The stresses of top level sport that

:00:10. > :00:18.ultimately drove Warwickshire's Jonathan Trott to pull out of the

:00:19. > :00:23.Ashes tour. I am sure Trotty will come home, he has a lovely family

:00:24. > :00:27.behind him, he will bounce back. We'll be finding out just how tough

:00:28. > :00:29.it is out in the middle in Test cricket and the psychological

:00:30. > :00:33.pressure on players. Also tonight, why recruiting experienced social

:00:34. > :00:41.workers is proving so hard in our biggest towns and cities. It is

:00:42. > :00:45.about skills, passion and knowledge and wanting to make the difference.

:00:46. > :00:49.Just days to go ` if you bought a lottery ticket in May, you could

:00:50. > :00:57.have won a massive ?12 million but time is running out to make that

:00:58. > :01:04.claim. Monday night is Derby night. And the

:01:05. > :01:08.start of a new week with High pressure in control but what's that

:01:09. > :01:17.going to mean for us in terms of weather. I'll have all the details

:01:18. > :01:20.for you later. Good evening. Warwickshire cricketer

:01:21. > :01:24.Jonathon Trott is back home tonight after dramatically quitting the

:01:25. > :01:28.Ashes test series in Australia. His club say they'll give him their full

:01:29. > :01:32.support as he battles with a long standing stress condition believed

:01:33. > :01:36.to be linked to depression. The England batsman has faced pressure

:01:37. > :01:39.on the pitch and off it with runs hard to come by and the Australians

:01:40. > :01:45.accusing him of being "poor and weak". Here's Giles Latcham.

:01:46. > :01:50.Out for just nine and out of the Ashes. Warwickshire batsman Jonathan

:01:51. > :01:53.Trott's long walk to the pavilion was swiftly followed by a long

:01:54. > :02:01.flight home from Australia, suffering we're told from a

:02:02. > :02:05.stress`related condition. The stakes are high. A shocking development for

:02:06. > :02:08.a neighbour back in Birmingham, and Warwickshire hero of the '80s and

:02:09. > :02:11.'90s. Paul Smith bowled as well as faced fast deliveries and recognises

:02:12. > :02:20.the stress and pressure that come with top flight cricket. It is a

:02:21. > :02:27.very very stressful environment. The key is to identify if and what the

:02:28. > :02:33.problem is and that are a lot of people with a lots of time for him.

:02:34. > :02:37.The supporters and fans will see if and when. Even as England retained

:02:38. > :02:40.the Ashes over the summer Trott appeared to struggle for form and

:02:41. > :02:47.was asked last month ahead of the tour about suggestions the Aussies

:02:48. > :02:52.had got inside his head. The surprising thing is, Australia are

:02:53. > :02:59.confident but they lost the Ashes series and are making comments

:03:00. > :03:02.already. That is the Australian way. The director of cricket says

:03:03. > :03:07.Jonathan Trott's health and well`being is the utmost priority.

:03:08. > :03:10.He calls him an outstanding cricketer and says over the next few

:03:11. > :03:22.weeks, the squad will give him and his family there utmost support. I

:03:23. > :03:28.suffered similar things that players go through in their careers but I am

:03:29. > :03:33.sure Trotty will come home, he has a lovely family behind him and get

:03:34. > :03:36.help and he will bounce back in the character we do. Trott says he needs

:03:37. > :03:40.time away from international cricket, time to spend with his

:03:41. > :03:46.young family and time it may be that heals. Joining us now is sports

:03:47. > :03:50.psychologist Professor Andy Lane from the University of

:03:51. > :04:00.Wolverhampton. Good evening to you. It is quite a shock. It is not all

:04:01. > :04:05.glitz and glamour. It is a shock but not unsurprising. Sportsmen are

:04:06. > :04:11.under tremendous pressure and you have to remember that they are

:04:12. > :04:15.superbly talented performers but not necessarily always good at managing

:04:16. > :04:19.the stresses that come with it. You have someone who can cope on the

:04:20. > :04:25.pitch most of the time but going on tour, it is stress is on and off the

:04:26. > :04:29.pitch all of that time and that puts someone in the pressure cooker. You

:04:30. > :04:36.cannot get away from it. I heard talk about the support services and

:04:37. > :04:41.while we might have expected them to fix it, if it is a sore knee and

:04:42. > :04:50.they went ten injured, we would not be thinking anything worse, we would

:04:51. > :04:56.expect that but someone who is sensitive to this barracking and the

:04:57. > :05:01.pressure cooker and has decided the best thing to do at the moment is

:05:02. > :05:07.remove themselves from the situation which is the best coping strategy.

:05:08. > :05:13.It is a team game but it is individual as well. It is bombarded

:05:14. > :05:19.by scores so you know exactly what job batting average is, you're

:05:20. > :05:25.fielding rate so you cannot escape. Those figures come at you all of the

:05:26. > :05:32.cart dashed all of the time. It puts pressure on you. How should it be

:05:33. > :05:37.managed now? He has come home I suspect because that is his best way

:05:38. > :05:42.of coping. The best thing is to leave him to his family and support

:05:43. > :05:49.away from cricket where he is not being reminded of what went on in

:05:50. > :05:53.the tour. I suspect he has strategies to help him overcome that

:05:54. > :05:55.on his own. Marcus to help him overcome that on his own. Marcus

:05:56. > :06:02.Agius Gothic have the same thing and did not return. Will he get

:06:03. > :06:18.heatedly. It is a decision he will come to. Gothic.

:06:19. > :06:26.Thank you for much. We wish Jonathan Trott all the best. Coming up later

:06:27. > :06:29.in the programme: a fresh start after jail as former inmates try to

:06:30. > :06:34.build a future by giving themselves somewhere to live. Birmingham should

:06:35. > :06:37.find out within weeks if its children's services are to be taken

:06:38. > :06:41.over after damning reports by Government inspectors. Part of the

:06:42. > :06:43.problem is recruiting and retaining experienced social workers,

:06:44. > :06:45.something shared by other urban authorities. Birmingham should have

:06:46. > :06:48.659 social workers dealing with children but 131 posts can't be

:06:49. > :06:51.filled. Walsall faces recruiting problems too. It has 123 social

:06:52. > :07:04.workers dealing with children but another 22 are needed. Cath Mackie

:07:05. > :07:07.has this report. It's Kirsty Naylor's first day at

:07:08. > :07:16.work in Walsall Borough Council's childrens' services department. It

:07:17. > :07:20.will be daunting and scary but I am ready. I am excited for the

:07:21. > :07:23.challenge. She's meeting other social workers, who've turned up to

:07:24. > :07:33.a recruitment morning at the council house. 22 jobs are on offer. The

:07:34. > :07:37.changes going on, the support in place tells me it is a good place to

:07:38. > :07:41.work. They are looking at the children and investing in the

:07:42. > :07:44.children as well as staff development. But would they stay?

:07:45. > :07:46.Many big authorities have problems retaining social workers ` overwork

:07:47. > :07:50.and under`resourcing are frequent complaints. The results in nearby

:07:51. > :07:53.Birmingham for example have been catastrophic. Children like Khyra

:07:54. > :07:59.Ishak and Keanu Williams died, it was said because they were

:08:00. > :08:03."invisible" to the authorities. But Walsall too has had its fair share

:08:04. > :08:06.of bad headlines. Back in June 2012 Ofsted rated its children's services

:08:07. > :08:09.as inadequate. But a year later, things had improved and the rating

:08:10. > :08:16.it was given was adequate. And things, we are told, are continuing

:08:17. > :08:21.to improve." We are not complacent, we have a long way to go because we

:08:22. > :08:25.want to be an outstanding service and that is what we are aiming for.

:08:26. > :08:28.The people here were told it didn't matter if they'd worked for

:08:29. > :08:32.Birmingham children's services but it's clearly an issue for some. To

:08:33. > :08:38.Birmingham, probably not. I will wait to see what happens. I would be

:08:39. > :08:45.happier in Walsall because I have the support I need. Would you

:08:46. > :08:52.consider Brooke `` Birmingham? I put in application and so, yes. A lot of

:08:53. > :08:55.the recent stuff would have put me off applying in future until things

:08:56. > :08:58.have improved. Today's event was oversubscribed perhaps a sign of

:08:59. > :09:01.growing confidence but they're bracing themselves now for a visit

:09:02. > :09:07.from Government inspectors next month. Police have issued a fresh

:09:08. > :09:09.appeal for information about the murder of a Coventry toddler five

:09:10. > :09:12.weeks ago. Two`year old Khaleel Hussain

:09:13. > :09:15.suffered a fatal head injury the day after this picture was taken. A man

:09:16. > :09:19.and woman arrested are on police bail. Detectives want anybody who

:09:20. > :09:28.may have seen Khaleel in the Ball Hill area of the city to get in

:09:29. > :09:33.touch. We know he passed away at two years

:09:34. > :09:36.of age, we are trying to piece together his short life and we are

:09:37. > :09:41.appealing for members of the community to come forward if they

:09:42. > :09:45.know what happened, prior to his death or in his short life with us.

:09:46. > :09:48.Opponents to high speed rail from across the Midlands have been

:09:49. > :09:51.protesting outside the Houses of Parliament. They say the HS2 line

:09:52. > :09:55.line will be a waste of money and will have a negative impact on the

:09:56. > :09:58.environment. Details of the first phase of the line between London and

:09:59. > :10:06.Birmingham have been published today. We are here to stop this

:10:07. > :10:13.madness, ?50 billion on a row way line that nobody really needs. Bad

:10:14. > :10:18.policies eventually fail. This is so bad, it will fall over. A

:10:19. > :10:22.19`year`old man from Cheltenham has died after his car crashed into a

:10:23. > :10:26.pub. Six men were in the Citroen which careered off the road in the

:10:27. > :10:28.village of Blythburgh in Suffolk on Saturday. Christopher Doran, from

:10:29. > :10:32.Cheltenham, and another teenager died at the scene. The other men are

:10:33. > :10:36.all said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

:10:37. > :10:41.The West Midlands Fire Service training base in Smethwick could be

:10:42. > :10:44.sold or rented out. The fire and rescue authority is discussing the

:10:45. > :10:47.proposal as well as plans to rebuild fire stations in Aston, Kings

:10:48. > :10:49.Norton, Coventry and Bickenhill. In future firefighters training will

:10:50. > :10:56.take place at their individual stations.

:10:57. > :10:59.A group of former prisoners have set up their own construction business

:11:00. > :11:01.to tackle a shortage of homes for ex`offenders. Up to a dozen

:11:02. > :11:04.properties in North Staffordshire are being refurbished, ready to

:11:05. > :11:08.house offenders being released into the community next year. They'll be

:11:09. > :11:16.monitored on a daily basis by the authorities. Ben Godfrey reports.

:11:17. > :11:19.Pete is out of prison on licence. Plastering skills he picked up

:11:20. > :11:28.inside are being used to build a home in Stoke`on`Trent for others

:11:29. > :11:33.waiting to be released. It gives people an opportunity to see what

:11:34. > :11:40.ex`offenders are doing. It's an opportunity to learn more skills. We

:11:41. > :11:43.have been asked not to identify the location but the authorities will

:11:44. > :11:46.monitor the ex`offenders who will live here on a daily basis. A

:11:47. > :11:50.Christian charity is supporting these ex`offenders and they get paid

:11:51. > :11:54.around ?50 a day for their work. They want to spruce up a dozen homes

:11:55. > :11:58.in Staffordshire, with the help of local letting agents and building

:11:59. > :12:03.contractors. There is a massive heart in Stoke`on`Trent to help

:12:04. > :12:10.people but they are not sure how. We will help, we don't mind doing that

:12:11. > :12:13.but we need support. A lot of it is lack of understanding. Some of these

:12:14. > :12:17.lads have had a bad upbringing or made a mistake, we all make

:12:18. > :12:18.mistakes. Housing advice for prisoners is limited, according to

:12:19. > :12:39.The Prison Reform Trust. There aren't enough rooms or houses

:12:40. > :12:48.to house people anyway never mind prisoners. The prisoner comes out

:12:49. > :12:51.with ?46. That is it. I was in jail for 7.5 years. I had support because

:12:52. > :12:55.I'm gauged in the support around me. For ex`prisoners like Pete, this

:12:56. > :12:59.work is supposed to be another step towards rehabilitation. But for a

:13:00. > :13:09.project eager to build community relations, it's chosen to keep its

:13:10. > :13:14.location closely guarded. This is our top story tonight. The stresses

:13:15. > :13:17.of top level sport that ultimately drove Jonathan Trott to pull out of

:13:18. > :13:22.the Ashes tour and return home to Birmingham. Your detailed weather

:13:23. > :13:25.forecast to come shortly ` also in tonight's programme a passion for

:13:26. > :13:31.two wheels that's lasted for 30 years ` our search for the Midlands

:13:32. > :13:35.unsung sporting hero. And we're live at the Hawthorns as

:13:36. > :13:39.Albion and Villa go head to head ` who'll come out on top?

:13:40. > :13:43.If you have a story you think we should be covering on Midlands

:13:44. > :14:00.Today, we'd like to hear from you. You can call us or send an e`mail.

:14:01. > :14:09.Cast your mind back to Friday May 31st of this year? Did you buy a

:14:10. > :14:13.lottery ticket? And, if so, have you checked it very very carefully.

:14:14. > :14:16.Especially if you bought it in the Ladywood area of Birmingham, close

:14:17. > :14:19.to the city centre. Because someone has won the 12 million pound

:14:20. > :14:25.Euromillion Raffle jackpot and not claimed it. Now time is running out.

:14:26. > :14:32.Sarah Falkland is in Ladywood for us tonight. So when is the deadline?

:14:33. > :14:39.The deadline is 11pm Wednesday night after that if not claimed all the

:14:40. > :14:42.money goes to good causes. Just to try and jog peoples memories,

:14:43. > :14:52.Camelot came up with a of stunt involving a countdown clock.

:14:53. > :15:03.Five, four, three, two. And they're off ` spreading the word round

:15:04. > :15:06.Ladywood that time is running out. The winning ticket for a million

:15:07. > :15:15.pounds every month for a year was bought somewhere near here on Friday

:15:16. > :15:21.May 31st. They don't deserve to win it if they are not claiming it. If

:15:22. > :15:26.you buy a ticket, you should put it away. If I won that money, I want my

:15:27. > :15:31.passport and I am off. So where can the ticket have got to? Got to hope

:15:32. > :15:36.it didn't end up in the washing or out with the rubbish? People have

:15:37. > :15:41.busy lives and do not check straightaway. Some people have a

:15:42. > :15:47.stack of tickets in a jewel and need a gentle reminder to check them.

:15:48. > :15:56.There have been instances of people finding tickets in glove box of cars

:15:57. > :16:00.and a pair of shorts. Ladywood is a deprived area, the numbers on

:16:01. > :16:06.benefits is three times the national average. The average home is

:16:07. > :16:16.?115,000. The winner could buy a whole street of homes around here or

:16:17. > :16:18.opt for one in the country. Brock Hamp `` Brockhampton house on the

:16:19. > :16:22.Herefordshire/Worcestershire is up for three million? The jackpot would

:16:23. > :16:25.buy you over 100 new Range Rovers. So what would you do with ?12

:16:26. > :16:33.million? I would never be broke again. I would move from around

:16:34. > :16:38.here. I am happy as I am! I don't need money to make me happy. So

:16:39. > :16:41.Sarah we know the ticket was bought in Ladywood but do we know exactly

:16:42. > :16:49.which outlet sold that extremely valuable bit of paper? Before that,

:16:50. > :17:03.let me remind you of what the number is... It might have been sold right

:17:04. > :17:08.here in this Ladywood supermarket. It could be your shop that sold the

:17:09. > :17:14.winning ticket. Yes, it could be one of our shops. I would be very happy

:17:15. > :17:21.because it would be nice to see one of the locals when the money. What

:17:22. > :17:27.have people said to you? People are panicking, running around, have they

:17:28. > :17:36.left my ticket here, checking the CCTV. I have not checked the CCTV.

:17:37. > :17:45.People are looking all over the place. I have checked their tickets.

:17:46. > :17:52.Who would you like to see women? Somebody in Ladywood. And it would

:17:53. > :18:00.be nice to see somebody in Ladywood. They need it. And what

:18:01. > :18:08.would you do with ?12 million? It would be a nightmare for me. I would

:18:09. > :18:13.not want to know `` I would not know what to do. I could help you. I

:18:14. > :18:24.reminder of the number. The deadline to claim your ?12 million is 11pm on

:18:25. > :18:27.Wednesday. Check your pocket! Tonight is Derby night in the

:18:28. > :18:30.Premier league and that means a full house at the Hawthorns to watch West

:18:31. > :18:33.Bromwich Albion play Aston Villa. Ian Winter is at the ground right

:18:34. > :18:40.now. You can barely squeeze a wafer thin

:18:41. > :18:47.mint between them this season. 14 points apiece. The referee has been

:18:48. > :18:52.in the spotlight this weekend, this afternoon I went to meet a man who

:18:53. > :18:56.is keeping a close eye on the performance of match officials. My

:18:57. > :18:58.very own private tutorial with an expert in football statistics. At

:18:59. > :19:01.the University of Wolverhampton Professor Alan Nevill has just

:19:02. > :19:04.signed a three`year contract with the governing body of Professional

:19:05. > :19:14.Match Officials to analyse the mistakes made by referees. The most

:19:15. > :19:19.recent research is fascinating providing compelling evidence that

:19:20. > :19:22.referees are far less likely now to make decisions which favour the home

:19:23. > :19:25.team. Now that might surprise a few Albion fans, who couldn't believe it

:19:26. > :19:29.when Chelsea got a controversial late penalty a couple of weeks ago.

:19:30. > :19:32.And it might also surprise a few Villa fans too after they were

:19:33. > :19:42.denied a clear penalty at Chelsea back in August. Our referees biased

:19:43. > :19:46.in favour of home teams? No. They might favour the home team

:19:47. > :19:58.subconsciously but the word bias is wrong. I think it is just how it

:19:59. > :20:05.happens at the time. It will even itself out. They have a difficult

:20:06. > :20:11.job. I have never said or LAN bastide referee. I try to support

:20:12. > :20:18.the guys. Had you solve the problem? He has been a revelation. He is in

:20:19. > :20:22.among the goals this year. My defenders need to be on their toes.

:20:23. > :20:25.Back in January, Albion fought back to earn a 2`2 draw nowonly goal

:20:26. > :20:29.difference separates them from Aston Villa. And this evening back at the

:20:30. > :20:34.University Professor Nevill will be watching like a hawk to analyse the

:20:35. > :20:37.referee's performance. It's been a funny old season for Christian

:20:38. > :20:44.Benteke. I don't think he's scored now for five games, that must be

:20:45. > :20:50.worrying for Villa? Yes, slight worry. He scored 23 goals last

:20:51. > :20:55.season but he struggled to recapture his form this time round. He has

:20:56. > :21:00.been hampered by a hip injury but his last goal for the Villa came

:21:01. > :21:05.against Newcastle. He has not scored in five games. But Villa need his

:21:06. > :21:08.goals and the big Belgian striker will be aware of that and desperate

:21:09. > :21:13.to repeat the trick he produced against the Albion in January of

:21:14. > :21:17.this year. Not least with it being the World Cup season. Meanwhile West

:21:18. > :21:24.Brom are very fortunate to have two top keepers at the club? Albion are

:21:25. > :21:30.very fortunate to have such fine goalkeepers. He grabbed is

:21:31. > :21:35.opportunity with both hands since injury to Ben Foster. Foster is

:21:36. > :21:39.making good progress in rehabilitation and when he is fit

:21:40. > :21:44.again, that really is a lovely problem for the head coach to have,

:21:45. > :21:48.to outstanding goalkeepers and many would love to see Ben Foster in the

:21:49. > :21:54.England World Cup squad for Brazil in the summer. Villa's away form is

:21:55. > :22:03.slightly better than Albion's home form. The bookies say Albion will

:22:04. > :22:06.win. I think it will be a 3`3 draw. Staying with sport and now the

:22:07. > :22:09.search for those dedicated individuals who keep grassroots

:22:10. > :22:12.sport alive. This year's BBC Midlands Sports Unsung Hero is down

:22:13. > :22:15.to the final five nominees and we'll be telling you about them this week.

:22:16. > :22:18.Tonight, cycling coach Graham Watkins. Laura May McMullan caught

:22:19. > :22:28.up with him track`side in Shropshire.
