:00:00. > :00:13.on the BBC News Channel. I'm back with the News at Ten. Now it's time
:00:14. > :00:18.Good evening. Two women who led the fight against failings at Stafford
:00:19. > :00:22.Hospital have been recognised in the New Year Honours list. Julie Bailey,
:00:23. > :00:25.who set up the campaign group Cure the NHS after witnessing her
:00:26. > :00:28.mother's treatment, was made a CBE. Helenee Donnelly, a nurse who became
:00:29. > :00:30.a whistle`blower, was made an OBE. Here's our health correspondent
:00:31. > :00:34.Michele Paduano. It was personal: the death of a mother that inspired
:00:35. > :00:37.Julie Bailey to confront not only poor care at Stafford Hospital, but
:00:38. > :00:40.one of the largest organisations in the world ` the NHS. In 2007,
:00:41. > :00:45.86``year`old Bella, left without oxygen, collapsed in hospital. For
:00:46. > :00:49.the next eight weeks Miss Bailey stayed by her bedside, witnessing
:00:50. > :00:55.atrocious care on the ward. I haven't accepted mum's gone yet. I
:00:56. > :00:58.just haven't accepted it. From her cafe in Stafford, she formed "Cure
:00:59. > :01:01.the NHS" which exposed the failings in elderly care. She campaigned for
:01:02. > :01:07.a public inquiry, confronting the politicians in her way. We want
:01:08. > :01:12.every person who died in that hospital examined. Her campaign cost
:01:13. > :01:16.her her livelihood and her home. She was blamed for the break up of
:01:17. > :01:19.Stafford Hospital. Speaking from Abu Dhabi, she felt her mum would have
:01:20. > :01:26.been proud. I'm overwhelmed. It's fantastic. It will keep our cause in
:01:27. > :01:34.the limelight. It's recognition of how society feels about the care of
:01:35. > :01:37.older people. Also honoured with a seasonal gift, nurse Helene Donnelly
:01:38. > :01:42.OBE who worked in Accident and Emergency. She raised nearly 100
:01:43. > :01:47.complaints at Stafford Hospital and spoke out at the public inquiry. I
:01:48. > :01:57.feel priveleged and obviously honoured. But not just for myself `
:01:58. > :02:01.for all of those who have blown the whistle and raised concerns. It's
:02:02. > :02:05.very difficult. People have had to deal with terrible consequences.
:02:06. > :02:18.Between them, they laid the foundations for changing the culture
:02:19. > :02:20.of the NHS. Nearly 1,200 people have received
:02:21. > :02:24.New Year Honours, including more than sixty here in the Midlands.
:02:25. > :02:27.They include two women with football a dominant feature in their lives.
:02:28. > :02:30.Here's Cath Mackie. Alison O'Connell has spent years on cold, windy
:02:31. > :02:32.touchlines ` spurring on generations of youngsters in Birmingham. She's
:02:33. > :02:35.raised thousands of pounds for sports projects and life skills
:02:36. > :02:40.courses. Her reward, an MBE for services to the voluntary sector.
:02:41. > :02:45.It's great for the local people. It's not just an award for me. It's
:02:46. > :02:50.a credit to the people involved over the years. From the touchline to the
:02:51. > :02:53.boardroom, Karren Brady ` the former Birmingham City Managing Director `
:02:54. > :02:56.said she was proud to become a CBE. Very priveleged and very proud,
:02:57. > :02:59.particularly to be recognised for the work I've done for other women
:03:00. > :03:02.in business. Ann Jones the 1969 Wimbledon Champion from birmingham
:03:03. > :03:09.also becomes a CBE for services to tennis. `` Birmingham. Elsewhere,
:03:10. > :03:12.the Mid Worcestershire Conservative MP Peter Luff gets a knighthood for
:03:13. > :03:16.political and public service. It was, he said, an honour he shared
:03:17. > :03:19.with his constituents. For the man dubbed "Mr Coventry", Joe Elliott,
:03:20. > :03:26.it's an MBE for services to museums. And it's an OBE for the leader of
:03:27. > :03:29.Coventry City Council Ann Lucas. Like many recipients, Carol
:03:30. > :03:33.Pemberton ` the music director for Black Voices ` said her MBE for
:03:34. > :03:41.services to music was humbling. Totally unexpected but greatfully
:03:42. > :03:44.received. With honours for more than 60 people across the West Midlands,
:03:45. > :03:53.the New Year celebrations will be extra special for many families. And
:03:54. > :03:56.you'll find more details on the Honours recipients from the West
:03:57. > :04:00.Midlands on our Facebook page. Football, and 2013 has been a year
:04:01. > :04:04.to forget for the Midlands' three Premier League teams. Two of them
:04:05. > :04:07.sacked a manager and not one of them is safe from the relegation battle.
:04:08. > :04:17.So is there any cause for optimism? Nick Clitheroe reports. There have
:04:18. > :04:21.been many more downs than ups for the supporters of Aston Villa, Stoke
:04:22. > :04:25.City and West Bromwich Albion in 2013. All three will see in the New
:04:26. > :04:27.Year in the bottom half of the Premier League and will be
:04:28. > :04:30.desperately hoping for a better 2014. Statistics show that both
:04:31. > :04:34.Stoke and Albion were among the worst performing league clubs in
:04:35. > :04:37.England in the last 12 months ` winning less than a point per game
:04:38. > :04:41.in 2013. That cost Tony Pulis his job at Stoke and Steve Clarke his
:04:42. > :04:47.post at the Hawthorns ` where they're still searching for a
:04:48. > :04:55.permanent replacement. For me it's been a tough two weeks. A real
:04:56. > :05:01.examination. We've come through a difficult period. The players have
:05:02. > :05:05.responded positively. Aston Villa fans can hardly be complacent. They
:05:06. > :05:07.only won just over a point per game in 2013 and that figure drops
:05:08. > :05:11.significantly for home matches. Manager Paul Lambert says he's only
:05:12. > :05:21.18 months into a project to rebuild the club on a sustainable basis, but
:05:22. > :05:36.how long will that project take? How long I'm given. That's the bottom
:05:37. > :05:41.line. I don't think you need to be... Nothing's certain in football.
:05:42. > :05:45.But in football, hope always springs eternal and fans of all three clubs
:05:46. > :05:48.will turn up again tomorrow believing 2014 will finally be their
:05:49. > :05:51.year. The weather forecast now with
:05:52. > :05:53.Shefali Oza, and Shefali I guess it's more rain again? It's not
:05:54. > :06:02.looking good. Shefali Oza, and Shefali I guess
:06:03. > :06:09.it's more rain again? It's not We're being battered and bruised by rain.
:06:10. > :06:20.Low pressure developing in the Atlantic. The two days to take note
:06:21. > :06:32.of are tomorrow and Friday. Tonight it will be wet and windy. Quiet now,
:06:33. > :06:40.but winds whipping up later. The north of the region may get off
:06:41. > :06:48.lightly. Heaviest showers at the stroke of midnight unfortunately!
:06:49. > :07:04.Winds picking up and a vile start to the new year. We've got warnings out
:07:05. > :07:16.for an inch of rain. Gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour. The rain is still
:07:17. > :07:22.going through tomorrow evening. The whole lot will clear by Thursday. A
:07:23. > :07:33.few showers then. Friday wet and windy. Thanks. Goodbye for now.
:07:34. > :07:45.Good evening. It looks like mother nature may provide her own
:07:46. > :07:51.pyrotechnics in the run-up to bid night tonight. We have some heavy
:07:52. > :07:56.showers in western parts, starting to ease a bit across Scotland and
:07:57. > :08:00.Northern Ireland. But the showers further south are heavier, with some
:08:01. > :08:04.flashes of lightning as they move eastwards. They do get a bit more
:08:05. > :08:09.hit and miss as we head towards midnight, but a greater chance of
:08:10. > :08:14.getting wet in the south as we move into 2014. Cardiff and London could
:08:15. > :08:16.see heavy downpours. Further north, you could be greeting the New Year
