:00:00. > :00:00.it is bad. When is it going to end?
:00:07. > :00:10.Hello and welcome to Midlands Today. The headlines tonight...
:00:11. > :00:16.Floodwaters rising, more rain on the way ` emergency services are on
:00:17. > :00:20.stand`by for a challenging weekend. I think it is the calm before the
:00:21. > :00:23.storm. What is coming down the river at the moment is what fell the other
:00:24. > :00:29.evening. But when and where will that rain
:00:30. > :00:32.be? I'll have the latest as the storms keep coming.
:00:33. > :00:33.We'll have a full report on flooding from around the region. Also
:00:34. > :00:36.tonight... Giving blood ` the new technique
:00:37. > :00:43.that could revolutionise the whole system. If you could freeze blood
:00:44. > :00:50.when there is an access, that would be ideal. `` a surplus.
:00:51. > :00:53.Not a laughing matter ` a Birmingham comedy club sues the popular TV show
:00:54. > :00:59.Glee Club for using its name. And from this to global pop
:01:00. > :01:02.superstar. I am in Stoke on Trent for the start of Robbie Williams'
:01:03. > :01:12.fan Festival. Good evening. The floods are
:01:13. > :01:19.continuing to cause problems across the Midlands and more heavy rain's
:01:20. > :01:23.due later tonight. There are currently 31 flood warnings in place
:01:24. > :01:25.and 39 alerts. Barriers have been put up in Shrewsbury, Ironbridge,
:01:26. > :01:28.and Bewdley. Our reporter, Ben Godfrey, is near the River Severn in
:01:29. > :01:32.Worcester tonight. How's the city coping there, Ben?
:01:33. > :01:42.The Severn is high here and rising, but it's not expected to reach 2007
:01:43. > :01:44.levels. But it is of some concern. The racecourse and cricket ground
:01:45. > :01:47.are completely underwater but overall the Midlands has escaped the
:01:48. > :01:50.worst, especially when compared to Somerset and Devon. The emergency
:01:51. > :01:53.services in our region have still been very busy, though. Today, I
:01:54. > :01:56.spent time with the fire service in Worcestershire to see the sort of
:01:57. > :02:02.incidents they're dealing with. On the outskirts of Bromsgrove, this
:02:03. > :02:05.taxi has made its final journey. For Hereford and Worcester Fire and
:02:06. > :02:10.Rescue Service, this is the third call`out within 24 hours to drivers
:02:11. > :02:18.trapped in floodwater. In this case, a swollen ford.
:02:19. > :02:20.It was a taxi driver who called the emergency services as his vehicle
:02:21. > :02:25.was filling up with water. They rescued him and two this Lisbon in
:02:26. > :02:35.the vehicle who were on their way to Birmingham airport. Did you see the
:02:36. > :02:42.sign? Yes, but the water was too much, it rose to quickly. You can
:02:43. > :02:52.see the tyre of the vehicle but you did he do go into deep `` but you do
:02:53. > :02:58.not need to go into deep for the intake to be filled. The River
:02:59. > :03:01.Severn is also rising again. Flood barriers are in place at Bewdley in
:03:02. > :03:06.Worcestershire, Shrewsbury and here in Ironbridge in Shropshire. We will
:03:07. > :03:09.see this rise by another 1.5 metres. The waters around Tewkesbury are
:03:10. > :03:12.also high, these pictures were taken from a helicopter by a Midlands
:03:13. > :03:15.Today viewer. At the moment, the flood defences are keeping the
:03:16. > :03:19.Severn at bay. There's no undue concern. Even so, Worcester Fire
:03:20. > :03:28.station is fully equipped to respond to river incidents. We have two
:03:29. > :03:32.boats. They are available for immediate response. The crews are
:03:33. > :03:37.trained to deal with these. We have Worcester and Hereford and others.
:03:38. > :03:40.The message is clear from the emergency services ` follow safety
:03:41. > :03:51.advice, use common sense and don't place yourself in danger. Tonight,
:03:52. > :03:58.large areas of farmland on the water and we are just a month away from
:03:59. > :04:02.the National Hunt Festival. Dan Pallett's been to find out how the
:04:03. > :04:07.organisers are coping. Welcome to Cheltenham on Sea. It has
:04:08. > :04:10.been wet, very wet. With the festival just under four weeks away,
:04:11. > :04:15.they have a close eye on the weather. The Clerk of the Course has
:04:16. > :04:20.his own weather centre in the middle of the course. It is pretty
:04:21. > :04:24.saturated but I think we would be able to race on it today despite
:04:25. > :04:29.overnight rainfall. It is not too windy today. Wednesday was a real
:04:30. > :04:38.shocker here. We recorded wind speeds in excess of 50 mph, which is
:04:39. > :04:43.as high as we have had. There is extra pressure to put the Cheltenham
:04:44. > :04:46.Festival on foot of it brings money into this region but is also a
:04:47. > :04:51.flagship for the entire industry and that is set to support 20,000 jobs
:04:52. > :04:56.across the country and is worth almost ?3.5 billion to the British
:04:57. > :05:03.economy. And they dealt with much everything hip or the glass chin,
:05:04. > :05:08.the course only survived template is below freezing due to frost covers.
:05:09. > :05:13.Two years ago, the lack of water was a problem. The show must go on.
:05:14. > :05:19.Construction is under way for the tented village with 60 workers on
:05:20. > :05:25.site everyday. Wind can cause problems here. We have to judge the
:05:26. > :05:29.weather for so many different circumstances, for the horses, for
:05:30. > :05:35.the people here. With temporary structures, there is a higher risk.
:05:36. > :05:43.Hopefully it will be a success this year. They will move the rails to
:05:44. > :05:48.run on fresh ground and they will do everything they can to get the
:05:49. > :05:51.festival underway. A tough task ahead.
:05:52. > :05:55.West Midlands Ambulance Service says it will have more vehicles on duty
:05:56. > :06:03.for what looks like a wash`out weekend. Why is whether so bad?
:06:04. > :06:06.Rebecca Wood is here with the answers.
:06:07. > :06:14.Well, this is all happening because the jet stream is stuck over us. It
:06:15. > :06:19.is continuing to push cold air over the Atlantic. On top of that, we
:06:20. > :06:24.have got problems with the rain that we have been seeing. The Met Office
:06:25. > :06:27.has brought in some... They have been looking at the statistics and
:06:28. > :06:33.they have seen that we have five months of rain since December the
:06:34. > :06:41.12th. On top of that, we have had 23 days of rain in January. On top of
:06:42. > :06:46.that, it has been the windiest December we have seen since 1969.
:06:47. > :06:50.With no sign of the jet stream moving, it will just continue to
:06:51. > :06:53.stay this way for the next few days. I will have the full forecast later.
:06:54. > :06:56.Thank you. And for all the latest information
:06:57. > :06:59.on the flooding and how it's affecting where you live, there are
:07:00. > :07:05.regular travel and weather updates on your local radio station.
:07:06. > :07:08.Coming up later in the programme... Avoiding student ghettoes ` plans to
:07:09. > :07:16.restrict the number and location of shared houses in Worcester.
:07:17. > :07:21.A revolutionary way to preserve blood has been discovered by
:07:22. > :07:25.researchers at the University of Warwick. Currently, all donated
:07:26. > :07:29.blood has to be used within a month of being collected or it goes off
:07:30. > :07:33.and has to be thrown away. But now scientists at Warwick say they've
:07:34. > :07:36.found a way to freeze and keep blood for as long as doctors want. Here's
:07:37. > :07:41.our Science Correspondent, David Gregory`Kumar.
:07:42. > :07:45.Blood. You can't operate without it. But donated and refrigerated blood
:07:46. > :07:48.only lasts just over a month before reaching it's "use`by" date. And
:07:49. > :07:57.that means the available supply varies. At certain times of the
:07:58. > :08:00.year, at times such as Christmas or during the Olympics, there is a
:08:01. > :08:06.dramatic reduction in the number of donations. In the UK typically, for
:08:07. > :08:11.some blood groups, we only have five days' stock. It does not take much
:08:12. > :08:15.of a fluctuation to have erratic effect on the amount of blood we can
:08:16. > :08:18.actually use in hospital. If you could freeze blood in times where
:08:19. > :08:22.there is a surplus, that would be ideal. So why not freeze blood and
:08:23. > :08:25.keep it for longer? Well, we're about to freeze these red blood
:08:26. > :08:28.cells. Watching using a microscope, you see all movement stops as the
:08:29. > :08:35.sample reaches `20 degrees Celsius and freezes. But as we warm things
:08:36. > :08:39.up... The melting ice crystals tear the red blood cells to pieces and
:08:40. > :08:42.you're left with unusable mush. Now scientists at the University of
:08:43. > :08:45.Warwick have found a way to avoid turning blood into useless pink goo.
:08:46. > :08:51.With our method, we looked at the process of freezing. We had a
:08:52. > :08:53.polymer that we can add and very low concentrations, we add it to the
:08:54. > :09:01.blood cells and then freezing directly. They are ready to go for
:09:02. > :09:04.cows were patient prop `` they are ready for transportation. The
:09:05. > :09:08.polymer interferes with the ice crystals and stops them tearing the
:09:09. > :09:10.blood cells apart during thawing. It might be useful for people with rare
:09:11. > :09:13.blood groups because they can donate blood when they want, they can store
:09:14. > :09:21.it in a freezer and then if they needed later in life for an oration,
:09:22. > :09:24.it can be thawed out. `` and operation. Large`scale trials of
:09:25. > :09:26.this technology could begin in 12 to 18 months.
:09:27. > :09:28.And you can read more about this discovery and find a link to the
:09:29. > :09:38.research on David's blog. A Birmingham`based comedy club has
:09:39. > :09:42.successfully sued the makers of the popular TV high school musical drama
:09:43. > :09:45.Glee. The Glee Club took Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corporation to the
:09:46. > :09:50.High Court for infringing its UK Trade Mark. Our reporter, Bob
:09:51. > :09:52.Hockenhull, is outside the venue in the city centre now. Sounds like a
:09:53. > :10:25.David`and`Goliath story, Bob. As we have heard, the High Court has
:10:26. > :10:31.rolled that the TV show infringed the trademark which the club here
:10:32. > :10:38.had had established for some years. With me is the owner, Mark Tughan.
:10:39. > :10:43.You must be delighted. How did you feel the TV programme was harming
:10:44. > :10:50.you? It manifested itself in so many ways, whether that was our social
:10:51. > :10:56.media pages being utterly swamped by fans of the show, whether it was
:10:57. > :11:01.comics who were tweeting and promoting their appearances at the
:11:02. > :11:07.club being swamped by negative comments and whether it was a big
:11:08. > :11:10.to`do with the TV show. There was an growing mass of evidence of customer
:11:11. > :11:16.confusion. We would turn up at freshers fair is to promote Parish
:11:17. > :11:23.of this and be met with hostility from the students. When we got to
:11:24. > :11:31.ask them why they `` why that was, they thought we were related to the
:11:32. > :11:35.TV show! Everybody is entitled to appeal, that is part of the legal
:11:36. > :11:40.process but this is a very strong judgement in our favour. One cannot
:11:41. > :11:47.revisit... I beg your have to leave it there. Congratulations. I know
:11:48. > :11:50.you have Lee Evans hit a knight who will help you celebrate. `` here
:11:51. > :11:54.tonight. Warwickshire County Council has
:11:55. > :11:57.agreed cuts to its budget of ?92 million over the next four years.
:11:58. > :12:00.Most services provided by the local authority will be affected, although
:12:01. > :12:03.there'll be no library closures and school crossing patrols will remain
:12:04. > :12:07.as they are. About 600 staff will go in a phased programme of job cuts.
:12:08. > :12:10.Council tax will also rise for the first time in four years.
:12:11. > :12:13.West Midlands Police are examining CCTV footage to try to track down
:12:14. > :12:18.those responsible for putting a pig's head on a patrol car. Officers
:12:19. > :12:22.were attending the Bull Ring shopping centre in Birmingham when
:12:23. > :12:26.the animal's head was put on the bonnet. The prank's been condemned
:12:27. > :12:32.by the Police Federation. I am sure there will be a small
:12:33. > :12:37.minority of individuals who will find amusement from doing that. From
:12:38. > :12:42.my point of view and our members' point of view, they have a tough
:12:43. > :12:47.enough job as it is out there. At the time, they were dealing with a
:12:48. > :12:50.real incident. Senior Government and opposition MPs
:12:51. > :12:53.are urging West Midlands Police to examine all available evidence in
:12:54. > :12:55.the hope of securing convictions for the Birmingham pub bombings. 40
:12:56. > :12:58.years after the attacks, there are also calls for a full`scale public
:12:59. > :13:02.inquiry. Our Political Editor, Patrick Burns, has more on this. Is
:13:03. > :13:07.there the slightest hope, so long after the event, of making any real
:13:08. > :13:11.progress on this? I have been talking to a campaign
:13:12. > :13:19.group made up of the relatives of some of the people who died in those
:13:20. > :13:25.bombings. They say that the public enquiry could help but they also
:13:26. > :13:29.saving should be a sense of outrage that the people behind these
:13:30. > :13:32.atrocities have never been caught. If we do not fight today to get
:13:33. > :13:36.these perpetrators caught and sentenced, then who is to say it
:13:37. > :13:43.will not happen in the future. Who is to say that people will not come
:13:44. > :13:46.to Birmingham or any other city and create mass murder and for them to
:13:47. > :13:53.continue to have their liberty? Nobody is looking for them. How can
:13:54. > :13:59.we claim to live in a democratic society where we allow that to
:14:00. > :14:04.happen? There has been no reply so far. It is not top of the political
:14:05. > :14:12.agenda. I have put that to the Northern Ireland minister and to the
:14:13. > :14:18.current MP, Jeremy Wright, who said they will take it up with them
:14:19. > :14:24.leaders. I put it to Jeremy Wright that in contrast to Hillsborough and
:14:25. > :14:30.bloody Sunday, there is a difference. There is a prodigal
:14:31. > :14:34.difference. This is something that happened 40 years ago. To honour new
:14:35. > :14:39.evidence will be challenging. If it is there to be found, it should be
:14:40. > :14:44.looked for. You still feel the pain is trying to heat up something that
:14:45. > :14:48.has lain: For so long. There could be some intense media interest
:14:49. > :14:52.around this. The 40th anniversary is this November. Thank you.
:14:53. > :14:57.And Patrick will be back with Sunday Politics on Sunday morning at 11am,
:14:58. > :15:00.here on BBC One. Our top story tonight... With
:15:01. > :15:04.floodwaters rising and more rain on the way, emergency services are
:15:05. > :15:07.braced for a challenging weekend. The rather bleak forecast to come
:15:08. > :15:10.shortly from Rebecca. Also in tonight's programme...
:15:11. > :15:13.How a world champion kickboxer's putting her weight behind a bid to

:15:18. > :15:20.And He's The One! Celebrating Robbie Williams' 40th birthday on the
:15:21. > :15:30.street in the Potteries where he used to live. Plus an exhibition of
:15:31. > :15:33.previously unseen family pictures. The number of shared houses in
:15:34. > :15:36.Worcester will be regulated under proposals by the city council to
:15:37. > :15:41.prevent certain areas becoming student ghettos. The policy was
:15:42. > :15:45.adopted by Warwick District Council in parts of Leamington Spa in
:15:46. > :15:47.November last year. Birmingham City Council is considering similar
:15:48. > :15:58.restrictions in Selly Oak, Selly Park, Edgbaston and Harborne. Cath
:15:59. > :16:04.Mackie reports. This man pays ?80 a week for his
:16:05. > :16:06.room in a student house. It is next to the University, where he is
:16:07. > :16:11.studying for a sports science degree. It is expensive, especially
:16:12. > :16:19.being a student on a limited budget. It is helpful living a five`minute
:16:20. > :16:23.walk from the campus. Sam is one of around 10,000 students. The number
:16:24. > :16:28.of people choosing to study here is growing by 40% in eight years. They
:16:29. > :16:34.need somewhere to live that is affordable. Hence the rise in homes
:16:35. > :16:39.of multiple occupancy. The city council wants it controlled. The
:16:40. > :16:50.character of the area changes. One thing is perfectly clear. HMOs play
:16:51. > :16:53.an important role in the stock. It is the ideal form of housing for
:16:54. > :16:59.many people but we need to make sure there is a balance. They are about
:17:00. > :17:05.to consult the public to `` on imposing a cap on the number of
:17:06. > :17:11.shared houses. There has to be some control over it. I can understand
:17:12. > :17:14.why people do not want it. The council say it is not just about
:17:15. > :17:23.anti`social behaviour but other issues about parking. I can see
:17:24. > :17:27.their fears that the issue is on the behaviour and the way these
:17:28. > :17:29.properties are conducted. Our concerns is that changing the
:17:30. > :17:33.planning laws will not make any difference to this. The university
:17:34. > :17:40.says it wants to drive up the quality of student accommodation and
:17:41. > :17:43.welcomes the council's decision. Dan's here with the sport and, as we
:17:44. > :17:46.saw in your report earlier, Cheltenham racecourse seems to
:17:47. > :17:51.managing with the heavy rain so far, but it's not such good news for
:17:52. > :17:54.football and rugby this weekend? Other racecourses are not coping as
:17:55. > :17:58.well as Cheltenham. Tomorrow's racing at Uttoxeter is
:17:59. > :18:00.off due to waterlogging and Warwick will inspect at 7am tomorrow.
:18:01. > :18:03.In rugby, Moseley's home game planned for this evening against
:18:04. > :18:08.Cornish Pirates is off. And the football's affected, too. In
:18:09. > :18:11.the conference, Kidderminster versus Cambridge is off and there's no game
:18:12. > :18:13.for Wolves in League One. The Stevengage pitch is waterlogged.
:18:14. > :18:17.But, in the Championship, Birmingham's game away to Charlton
:18:18. > :18:19.was declared to be on after a pitch inspection this afternoon.
:18:20. > :18:22.Earlier, shares in the Blues' parent company, Birmingham International
:18:23. > :18:25.Holdings, slumped in value by 34% on the Hong Kong Stock Market. But
:18:26. > :18:34.manager Lee Clark says his only concern is tomorrow's match. I have
:18:35. > :18:40.to take a note of what is being said and issues that are being drawn up
:18:41. > :18:43.but the football side of it is my only concern. I have always been a
:18:44. > :18:46.manager who does not get involved in the financial side of it.
:18:47. > :18:48.Kick boxing has more than 100,000 participants across Great Britain,
:18:49. > :18:52.including the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. But it's still not
:18:53. > :18:55.officially recognised as a sport. That means even elite athletes are
:18:56. > :18:59.unable to attract Lottery funding to help fund their training. Now a
:19:00. > :19:05.world champion from Birmingham is leading the charge to change all
:19:06. > :19:09.that, as Nick Clitheroe reports. When Hailey Hutton first entered a
:19:10. > :19:13.kick boxing gym at the age of seven, she was a shy young girl hiding
:19:14. > :19:16.behind her mum. 15 years later, she's a world champion, having
:19:17. > :19:25.lifted the title in Italy last October. It has been great overall
:19:26. > :19:29.for confidence building. I would not even stand at the front of the class
:19:30. > :19:31.and now I teach my own classes. The progress I have made is amazing.
:19:32. > :19:35.Neil Kelly has coached Hailey from the very first day. He's immensely
:19:36. > :19:41.proud of her achievements in the ring but also what she's done for
:19:42. > :19:45.the image of women in the sport. It is a male dominated sport, kick
:19:46. > :19:48.boxing. The ladies are starting to make a name for themselves. She is
:19:49. > :19:54.the first one to really breakthrough in our gym and go right to the top.
:19:55. > :19:58.All of the younger girls look up to Hayley is a role model. It is nice
:19:59. > :20:03.that the younger generation to me as a role model. It is nice to know
:20:04. > :20:07.that I have inspired some younger women and girls to get involved in
:20:08. > :20:09.it. And that could all help British kick boxing's campaign to gain
:20:10. > :20:13.official recognition from Sport England opening up access to Lottery
:20:14. > :20:16.funding and driving up the number of competitors. The discipline
:20:17. > :20:20.instilled by kick boxing has also helped Hailey with her education.
:20:21. > :20:23.She's currently studying graphic design at Solihull College, even
:20:24. > :20:28.though combining her two passions isn't always easy. I do find it
:20:29. > :20:36.difficult to do the two because I am soaked passionate about both. `` so
:20:37. > :20:39.passionate about both. The college is encouraging me. I am starting to
