:00:00. > :00:11.firepower in military exercises. That is all from the BBC
:00:12. > :00:15.Hello and welcome to Midlands Today. The headlines tonight: Anger from
:00:16. > :00:18.Stafford Hospital campaigners as it is revealed crucial patient numbers
:00:19. > :00:23.were left out of a report. If the hospital was not there I would have
:00:24. > :00:26.lost at least two of my children. I cannot think what it would be like
:00:27. > :00:28.without it. We will examine what hope there is for maternity services
:00:29. > :00:32.in Stafford. Also tonight: Jailed for two years
:00:33. > :00:36.for stalking his ex`girlfriend, who later jumped to her death from a
:00:37. > :00:39.motorway bridge. He is evil. He is a bully and a coward and had put my
:00:40. > :00:42.daughter through hell. As donations head towards ?2.5
:00:43. > :00:46.million, teenage fundraiser Stephen Sutton ticks off another one on his
:00:47. > :00:57.bucket list ` making a video of his life. The aim of Stephen's story is
:00:58. > :01:01.to spread as much positivity as possible. To show people what it is
:01:02. > :01:06.like to have something goes wrong in your life but not be defined by it.
:01:07. > :01:09.A cricket tour with a difference. The remarkable story of the
:01:10. > :01:11.Worcestershire Gents invited to Berlin in 1937.
:01:12. > :01:15.And today has certainly been a bit of a wash`out, but will the weekend
:01:16. > :01:19.follow suit? Well, there are plenty of April showers on the horizon, but
:01:20. > :01:26.we will get the odd spell of sunshine too. When and where? I'll
:01:27. > :01:29.tell you later. Good evening. The number of people
:01:30. > :01:33.using Stafford Hospital was one of the reasons given for its recent
:01:34. > :01:36.downgrading. But today it has emerged that details of how many
:01:37. > :01:39.children were treated there was removed from an official report. The
:01:40. > :01:45.administrators, who now manage the hospital, say it was an innocent
:01:46. > :01:47.mistake. But Stafford's MP says it calls into question the decision to
:01:48. > :01:52.cut services. Our health correspondent, Michele Paduano,
:01:53. > :01:55.reports. Baby Gracie went into the hospital
:01:56. > :01:58.in Stafford with a chest infection. Her sister had liver failure.
:01:59. > :02:05.Summer, aged four, suffered concussion last May. And her sister,
:02:06. > :02:09.aged six, had her tonsils removed. There are ten children in the family
:02:10. > :02:12.and they are worried about the loss of the Children's Ward. The hospital
:02:13. > :02:16.is like a lifeline to my children. It is a lifeline to us. If the
:02:17. > :02:21.hospital was not there, I would have lost at least two of my children. I
:02:22. > :02:25.do not want to think what life would be like without it. But did their
:02:26. > :02:28.hospital stays appear on Stafford Hospital's statistics? A report
:02:29. > :02:32.compiling those numbers was written by senior staff earlier this year.
:02:33. > :02:35.When it was sent out to other hospitals, with their names on, the
:02:36. > :02:38.figures had been removed. The Trust's administrators say it is an
:02:39. > :02:42.innocent mistake made by a junior member of staff and they have now
:02:43. > :02:45.apologised to the authors of the report. They say that it makes no
:02:46. > :02:48.material difference to the process and the numbers have now been
:02:49. > :02:53.agreed. But they will not say who signed off the report and they will
:02:54. > :02:56.not tell us what those numbers are. I understand that this document has
:02:57. > :02:59.the correct figures, which shows 3000 more episodes of care. Stafford
:03:00. > :03:11.Hospital campaigners are looking to see if there are any grounds for a
:03:12. > :03:14.legal challenge. I would like to think that, by now, Jeremy Hunt
:03:15. > :03:21.knows the true figures and if that is the case he should be looking at
:03:22. > :03:24.doing a review on paediatrics. A year ago, 50,000 people marched to
:03:25. > :03:35.save children's and maternity services. Maternity may have a
:03:36. > :03:38.reprieve, but now the MP says they should look again at children's
:03:39. > :03:41.services. What I am more concerned about is what are the consequences
:03:42. > :03:44.of these revised figures. Clearly, we have to see that the proposals of
:03:45. > :03:47.the Trust's special administrator are now measured against those
:03:48. > :03:52.revised figures. For this family, losing the children's ward is seen
:03:53. > :03:56.as a disaster. And Michele joins me now. The future
:03:57. > :04:00.of children's services at Stafford remains a big issue in the town.
:04:01. > :04:08.What hope is there for maternity services?
:04:09. > :04:11.There should be some hope. Back in February, when they announced the
:04:12. > :04:15.hospital would be taken over, and decision was taken by the Prime
:04:16. > :04:22.Minister to organise a review of the maternity services. What is being
:04:23. > :04:29.proposed is good steps to make sure that A continues at Stafford
:04:30. > :04:32.Hospital. Hard work to make sure we can continue with consultant led
:04:33. > :04:37.maternity services, the people can continue to have babies in
:04:38. > :04:40.Staffordshire. I understand that there was a debate at the highest
:04:41. > :04:46.level of government about whether that should take place. The night
:04:47. > :04:50.before, it had not been the sided. The review is being done by NHS
:04:51. > :04:57.England, but is not likely to take place until next year after the
:04:58. > :05:02.election. I understand they are looking at downgrading the services
:05:03. > :05:08.before then. The Prime Minister's personal assistant has said that is
:05:09. > :05:12.not acceptable. You are watching Midlands Today,
:05:13. > :05:15.good to have you with us. Coming up later in the programme: 90 minutes
:05:16. > :05:20.from a European final ` Blues Ladies prepare for a Swedish semifinal
:05:21. > :05:23.showdown. The remarkable story of Stephen
:05:24. > :05:27.Sutton continues to inspire. His drive for the Teenage Cancer Trust
:05:28. > :05:31.shows no sign of slowing down, as his appeal heads towards ?2.5
:05:32. > :05:35.million pounds. And today the cancer patient from Staffordshire was told
:05:36. > :05:38.a comedy show in his honour will be held in Birmingham on Sunday ` and
:05:39. > :05:42.it is already a sell`out. Bob Hockenhull is at the venue for us
:05:43. > :05:47.tonight. Bob, the amount Stephen has raised is a significant figure for
:05:48. > :05:52.the charity isn't it? It is. The Teenage Cancer Trust
:05:53. > :05:58.normally raises much less than this in a year. He has raised one fifth
:05:59. > :06:03.of their total fundraising. That is still rising. This afternoon, a
:06:04. > :06:13.video of his life was released. It has many contributors, including
:06:14. > :06:16.Stephen's mother. When Stephen started his bucket list, we never
:06:17. > :06:19.expected it to go where it has gone. It has inspired and motivated so
:06:20. > :06:28.many people. Stephen telling his story has made people appreciate
:06:29. > :06:35.just what they have got. We are in the bar where the comedy gig will
:06:36. > :06:40.take place on Sunday night. I am with Richard Taylor, who works here.
:06:41. > :06:45.What was your reaction when Stephen as to put on the gig? I was
:06:46. > :06:50.honoured. All he was bothered about is can we do it inside the Mac days.
:06:51. > :06:54.We are doing our best to make it successful. We are hoping to make
:06:55. > :07:00.about ?10,000. We are going to have an after party and you can join it
:07:01. > :07:06.if you do not have a ticket. Any money made on the door will go to
:07:07. > :07:15.the charity. There are many celebrities taking the campaign to
:07:16. > :07:23.heart. Some big comedy names here? There will be, but I cannot tell you
:07:24. > :07:34.yet. It may also be streamed on the Internet? It may. But that is not
:07:35. > :07:38.yet confirmed. Thank you very much. A man who stalked his former
:07:39. > :07:42.girlfriend in the days leading up to her death has been jailed for two
:07:43. > :07:45.years. Ryan Dey was arrested a month after Kamaljit Sidhu jumped to her
:07:46. > :07:49.death from a bridge over the M6 motorway. The judge said he had
:07:50. > :07:51.subjected her and her family to "a sustained campaign of harassment."
:07:52. > :07:58.Giles Latcham has more. Kamaljit Sidhu, or Kam, was kind,
:07:59. > :08:01.smiling, and funny say her family. She was the manager of a bar in
:08:02. > :08:04.Birmingham and began a relationship with a doorman there, Ryan Dey. His
:08:05. > :08:08.controlling and abusive behaviour led her to break up with him but he
:08:09. > :08:16.continued to stalk and harass her right up to the night of her death.
:08:17. > :08:23.We really miss her. Her death has left a big hall in our lives. Does
:08:24. > :08:29.he realise the damage that he has inflicted? Early one morning last
:08:30. > :08:41.October, traffic on the M6 was brought to a standstill. There was a
:08:42. > :08:47.police incident. It was a young woman jumping from her death onto
:08:48. > :08:53.the motorway below will stop Kam had reached the end of her tether. He
:08:54. > :09:02.had hacked her Facebook and stolen her Ford. He would turn up outside
:09:03. > :09:05.her home at the end. For months, he harassed and stalked her `
:09:06. > :09:09.obsessively jealous when she went out to see friends. "You do nothing
:09:10. > :09:12.but show me hate", she messaged him. And later, "you terrify me". Dey
:09:13. > :09:15.pleaded guilty to stalking and was sentenced to two years. Not enough
:09:16. > :09:18.say her family. We want the world to know that this can never be allowed
:09:19. > :09:27.to happen again. I do not want anyone else to go through what we
:09:28. > :09:34.have. Our lives have stopped. Kam never reported the harassment to the
:09:35. > :09:38.police. We have made stalking a criminal offence, but we are still
:09:39. > :09:43.finding that victims are coming to us saying that they have reported it
:09:44. > :09:52.to the police but it has not been taken seriously. In light of her
:09:53. > :09:58.death, Kam wrote, trust me, I will get through this. Her final message
:09:59. > :10:06.to her family, I love you all what I got weak.
:10:07. > :10:09.On May the 22nd, voters will go to the polls in both European and local
:10:10. > :10:11.elections. And today the Conservative Party have launched
:10:12. > :10:13.their West Midlands European Parliamentary Elections campaign in
:10:14. > :10:16.Birmingham. The seven Tory candidates describe next month's
:10:17. > :10:20.vote as the most important European elections for a generation and claim
:10:21. > :10:23.they are the only party that can deliver real change in Europe. We
:10:24. > :10:27.want to see real change in Europe and we want to make sure that we
:10:28. > :10:31.secure a better deal for Britain. We want to put that deal to the British
:10:32. > :10:34.people in a referendum. Right now, we need to see Conservative members
:10:35. > :10:41.of the European Parliament working with our colleagues at Westminster
:10:42. > :10:44.to negotiate that better deal. Meanwhile the UKIP leader, Nigel
:10:45. > :10:47.Farage, took a rain`soaked tour of Dudley town centre this afternoon,
:10:48. > :10:51.chatting to market stall holders. He is due to speak at a public meeting
:10:52. > :10:55.in the town hall tonight. The politician is the privately`educated
:10:56. > :10:59.son of a stockbroker. We asked him how much he felt he had in common
:11:00. > :11:04.with many working class people in the Black Country. I have a bit more
:11:05. > :11:07.in common with them than Clegg, Cameron and Miliband, because I have
:11:08. > :11:11.actually had a job. I have been through some tough times in life and
:11:12. > :11:15.some good times in life. I've had times I have been losing money in
:11:16. > :11:21.business. I have lived in the real world, I worked for 20 years, I ran
:11:22. > :11:24.my own company for nine years. It is the story sparked by a simple
:11:25. > :11:28.letter which claimed that hard`line Muslims were trying to take over
:11:29. > :11:32.schools in Birmingham. We still do not know if that letter is a hoax,
:11:33. > :11:35.but the focus on schools in the city is widening. There are now at least
:11:36. > :11:38.four investigations into 25 schools ` being carried out by Ofsted,
:11:39. > :11:41.Birmingham City Council, the Department for Education, and the
:11:42. > :11:44.Education Funding Agency. The Education Secretary, Michael Gove,
:11:45. > :11:46.says he is extremely concerned and has drafted in a former
:11:47. > :11:53.counter`terrorism chief, Peter Clarke, to investigate. There are
:11:54. > :11:57.now fresh claims about inappropriate teaching. The BBC was contacted by
:11:58. > :12:01.the British Humanist Society staff at Park View Academy, who also told
:12:02. > :12:07.the BBC that creationism is being taught in science lessons. Cath
:12:08. > :12:10.Mackie has more. Sitting in the shadows, not wanting
:12:11. > :12:13.to be identified. This is the first time staff from Park View Academy in
:12:14. > :12:23.Birmingham have spoken publicly. Their complaints are of extremism
:12:24. > :12:28.and discrimination in the classroom. In a sex education lesson, it works
:12:29. > :12:34.she was given out saying that a woman had to obey her husband will
:12:35. > :12:42.stop questions were asked. So a woman cannot say no? Creationism was
:12:43. > :12:47.being taught in a science class by a science teacher to students studying
:12:48. > :12:51.for their GCSEs. Park View Academy is not the only school under
:12:52. > :12:54.scrutiny. 25 schools in the city are being investigated over claims they
:12:55. > :12:56.have been taken over by Muslim hardliners. Park View is strongly
:12:57. > :12:59.refuting the latest allegations. Creationism, they say, is not school
:13:00. > :13:02.policy and the issue of sexual consent came from a misunderstanding
:13:03. > :13:05.of historical reference to do with cultural expectations of sex within
:13:06. > :13:08.marriage. They have since held a special assembly, they say, to make
:13:09. > :13:17.clear sex without informed consent is rape. The situation is now so
:13:18. > :13:20.sensitive the chief inspector of schools in England, Sir Michael
:13:21. > :13:23.Wilshaw, is taking personal charge of Ofsted's investigation in
:13:24. > :13:26.Birmingham, while the City Council is under pressure to publish the
:13:27. > :13:29.results of its own investigations. One woman, whose daughter is due to
:13:30. > :13:38.start at Park View in September, says she is confident it is a good
:13:39. > :13:42.school. The first thing that has attracted me is the education and
:13:43. > :13:46.the results, because you want to send your child to a school where
:13:47. > :13:50.you know they will achieve their potential. It is thought the reports
:13:51. > :13:55.into the allegations will be made public next month. Cath Mackie, BBC

:14:39. > :14:41.Thirty`two years ago this month, Aston Villa flew back from Belgium
:14:42. > :14:44.having earned their place in the European Cup final. This weekend,
:14:45. > :14:48.Birmingham City Ladies are hoping to do the same, in Sweden. They are
:14:49. > :14:54.just one game away from reaching the final of the UEFA Women's Champions
:14:55. > :14:57.League. And if the Blues succeed, it will be a remarkable achievement,
:14:58. > :15:01.against all the odds. Nick Clitheroe reports.
:15:02. > :15:04.Karen Carney and Kerys Harrop are loving their football at the moment
:15:05. > :15:07.and who can blame them. They have been coaching young players at
:15:08. > :15:10.Shrewsbury Town ahead of England's World Cup qualifier there next
:15:11. > :15:18.month. But there was no hiding their excitement about Birmingham City's
:15:19. > :15:23.European adventure. This is a big achievement. It is the biggest indie
:15:24. > :15:29.club's history. To go that one step further, into the final, would be
:15:30. > :15:34.amazing. Also amazing for people in the past who have helped to build
:15:35. > :15:38.the club. Tyreso are one of a number of European clubs who have thrown
:15:39. > :15:40.big money at the women's game ` signing major stars like the

:15:44. > :15:45.Victory for Birmingham City would justify their alternative philosophy
:15:46. > :15:52.of developing their own young talent. We have got nothing to lose.
:15:53. > :15:56.Everyone thinks they will go through and we are the underdogs, but we
:15:57. > :16:00.have done so well as a club to get where we are. We are under no
:16:01. > :16:04.pressure. You do not get many opportunities to play in these
:16:05. > :16:09.competitions. To be in this position is very rare, and you have to enjoy.
:16:10. > :16:12.The Swedish side had the better of the goalless first leg, but
:16:13. > :16:16.Birmingham grew in confidence and will fly to Sweden tomorrow with
:16:17. > :16:19.plenty of belief. The other big plus was a sell`out crowd at Solihull.
:16:20. > :16:23.Even if they go out of the Champions League on Sunday, Blues have already

:16:34. > :16:38.Good luck to Birmingham City Ladies on Sunday. But as for their male
:16:39. > :16:41.counterparts, what a contrast! Is there any end in sight to the Blues
:16:42. > :16:45.dismal home form? In a word, no! Cast your mind back
:16:46. > :16:50.to the 1st of October ` the Blues beat Millwall 4`0 at St Andrew's.
:16:51. > :16:53.Who would have thought that now, almost seven months later, they are
:16:54. > :16:58.still waiting for their next home win. That is 16 home games ` nine
:16:59. > :17:07.defeats and seven draws. Just seven points from a possible 48.
:17:08. > :17:10.Relegation form. Look at the bottom of the Championship. Birmingham just
:17:11. > :17:13.outside the bottom three, on goal difference. They have got three
:17:14. > :17:16.games left: At home to Leeds tomorrow, at home to Wigan on
:17:17. > :17:20.Tuesday, and then finally away to Bolton.
:17:21. > :17:24.And the nerves are jangling for Villa and Albion near the foot of
:17:25. > :17:29.the Premier League as well? Yes, they have both got four games
:17:30. > :17:33.left to play. West Brom are hoping to avoid a hat`trick of 3`3 draws at
:17:34. > :17:43.the Hawthorns. Tomorrow, they are at home to West Ham, with whom they
:17:44. > :17:49.drew 3`3 when they met in December! If we lose the game, we will have to

:17:59. > :18:04.against Cardiff and Norwich and spires `` Spurs. We have done well
:18:05. > :18:08.in those games and I believe we are ready. Albion should be safe if they
:18:09. > :18:12.beat West Ham, likewise Villa if they get a point away to Swansea.
:18:13. > :18:15.But if they don't, it could go to the wire Elsewhere, Shrewsbury could
:18:16. > :18:16.be relegated from League One tomorrow, even if they beat
:18:17. > :18:20.Peterborough. And Hereford United must win their
:18:21. > :18:25.last match to stand any chance of survival in the Conference.
:18:26. > :18:28.It is a difficult time in the season.
:18:29. > :18:31.In August 1937, an unlikely group of Englishman arrived in Berlin, for an
:18:32. > :18:34.even more unlikely sporting tour. The Gentlemen of Worcestershire
:18:35. > :18:37.Cricket Club had been invited by members of the Nazi hierarchy, who
:18:38. > :18:39.had developed an interest in the quintessentially English game, to
:18:40. > :18:44.compete in three games against the best players in Germany. Well now a
:18:45. > :18:46.new book, The Fields of Shadows, tells the story of this long
:18:47. > :18:55.forgotten cricket tour. Dan Pallett reports.
:18:56. > :18:58.It is a timeless English scene. Cricket, especially at Worcester, is
:18:59. > :19:00.a relaxed and convivial sport. But history shows it spread to some
:19:01. > :19:23.surprising places. Germany in Nothing like a spot of cricket,
:19:24. > :19:29.then, to diffuse the tension. There was an element of still trying to
:19:30. > :19:32.make friends with Hitler. There was an element in British society that

:19:55. > :19:57.uncovered these Worcestershire Gents who took`up an invitation from the
:19:58. > :20:01.German minister for sport to tour Berlin. Eager to promote their sport
:20:02. > :20:10.and build bridges with their hosts, they even made a Nazi salute before
:20:11. > :20:17.the first match. I am sure that they were quite ashamed when Hitler
:20:18. > :21:06.turned out the way that he did. I think they were being polite.
:21:07. > :21:09.here in the middle of the photograph. I don't remember any
:21:10. > :21:12.German animosity, but I do not know why he went on the tour. I suspect
:21:13. > :22:52.he thought it would be interesting. We are expecting a few showers from
:22:53. > :22:56.the south`west will stop. In the mid 1970's, Peter was one of
:22:57. > :23:00.the most famous faces on TV screens in the Midlands, as the creator and
:23:01. > :23:07.host of Tiswas. It was a success because it broke all the rules. I
:23:08. > :23:13.got the first custard pie and the first bucket of water. It was a
:23:14. > :23:19.tremendous reckless `` a tremendous recipe for kids. Peter's fame saw
:23:20. > :23:32.Redditch come calling, to front a major promotional video for the
:23:33. > :23:36.town. So if we are here, I think I can remember it the way. Since we
:23:37. > :23:40.showed the old film on Midlands Today last week, Peter's celebrity
:23:41. > :23:43.status has returned once again. I began to get e`mails from people. I
:23:44. > :23:49.got some calls saying I remembered you will stop Over the last 40
:23:50. > :23:53.years, Peter has run radio stations, been the High Sheriff of the West
:23:54. > :24:04.Midlands, and is now dabbling in politics. I get elected as district
:24:05. > :24:10.councillor. I walk in, not knowing what to expect, and immediately
:24:11. > :24:23.someone said that is councillor Tiswas. So seeing as we have the
:24:24. > :24:30.creator of Tiswas, there's one thing I'm desperate to know....who was the
:24:31. > :24:34.flan flinger? Do not go there. Some very heavy rain around today `
:24:35. > :24:38.tricky on the roads. Is it looking any drier for the weekend, Rebecca?
:24:39. > :24:43.April is well known for its showers and today we certainly had a display
:24:44. > :24:46.of those. Some heavy downpours, with 15`20m of rain across the South
:24:47. > :24:51.Midlands, and plenty of surface water around. And we have more heavy
:24:52. > :24:54.rain on the way through the weekend. But it won't be a total wash`out `
:24:55. > :24:58.there will be some brightness, particularly tomorrow. But winds
:24:59. > :25:02.will start to pick up, and we could get some blustery conditions over
:25:03. > :25:05.the next few days. For a time tonight things will dry out, but
:25:06. > :25:08.that is sandwiched between two fronts ` the first from today
:25:09. > :25:12.clearing away, before a second swings in around this deep area of
:25:13. > :25:15.low pressure which is bringing us this unsettled weather this weekend.
:25:16. > :25:18.So we still have some showers to contend with this evening and
:25:19. > :25:22.tonight, at times some will be heavy. Then we have this brief spell
:25:23. > :25:30.of dryness, even though we have clear skies for a time, as that
:25:31. > :25:33.second band of rain works its way. A spell of steady rain for most of us
:25:34. > :25:37.and temperatures won't fall away too far under the cloud and rain. So a
:25:38. > :25:41.wet and cloudy start to Saturday with that rain band sitting over us
:25:42. > :25:45.` but it will brighten up as that clears away to the north. Some
:25:46. > :25:50.pleasant sunny spells to come, not a bad morning really. Through the
:25:51. > :25:54.afternoon, showers will pep up a little ` again we could get some
:25:55. > :25:57.heavy bursts in there, and we can't rule out a rumble of thunder. Where
:25:58. > :26:01.we get the sunshine, temperatures not doing too badly ` up to 15
:26:02. > :26:03.Celsius. Winds are picking up a little bit though. A blustery
:26:04. > :26:06.afternoon. Those showers continue through Saturday evening, again some
:26:07. > :26:09.could be sharp. But they won't really clear away as that low sweeps
:26:10. > :26:13.across us. Temperatures again around eight or nine Celsius with the cloud
:26:14. > :26:16.cover. The low continues to clear away through Sunday and around that
:26:17. > :26:19.we will get some showers. The north Midlands perhaps doing a little
:26:20. > :26:23.better ` managing to see some brightness. But not a bad day `
:26:24. > :26:28.again sunshine and showers for most of us. With lighter winds and milder
:26:29. > :26:56.air, temps into the mid`teens. Goodbye.
:26:57. > :27:05.at the European elections on May the 22nd.
:27:06. > :27:12.even though that would wreck the recovery and destroy jobs.
:27:13. > :27:16.The Conservatives are now openly flirting with exit.
:27:17. > :27:20.they just don't have the courage of their convictions on this.
:27:21. > :27:26.They wouldn't lift a finger to help keep Britain in the EU.
:27:27. > :27:31.So, I'm asking you to vote for the Liberal Democrats, the party of in.
:27:32. > :27:37.In for the sake of British prosperity and jobs.
