:00:00. > :00:09.Good evening. West Midlands One it's time for
:00:10. > :00:11.Good evening. West Midlands candidates contesting Thursday's
:00:12. > :00:15.European elections have clashed over the prospect of a referendum on
:00:16. > :00:19.membership of the EU. The Prime Minister is promising to give the
:00:20. > :00:24.public a say in 2017 if the Conservatives win the next General
:00:25. > :00:27.Election. But voters in the Midlands are seeing a major split between
:00:28. > :00:32.parties over whether Britain should be in or out of Europe. Ben Godfrey
:00:33. > :00:36.reports. Every five years, voters in the West Midlands get a say in what
:00:37. > :00:41.happens here ` Brussels, the home of the European Parliament. The
:00:42. > :00:44.campaign leaflets have been sent out and in seven days, seven MEPs will
:00:45. > :00:50.be elected to represent our diverse region. On the BBC Sunday Politics
:00:51. > :00:53.programme, candidates from the four main parties joined a special live
:00:54. > :01:04.debate and focused on one thorny issue: a referendum on EU
:01:05. > :01:07.membership. The Lib Dems and Labour peers are locked a referendum just
:01:08. > :01:13.recently. So it is clear that we cannot have a Conservative
:01:14. > :01:17.Government. Let us negotiate, that is get the best deal possible and
:01:18. > :01:25.UKIP wants the UK to leave the EU as soon as possible. Then have a
:01:26. > :01:29.referendum. We have clout with the people. They know we are the party
:01:30. > :01:32.and we have tapped a fair amount of people in the European Parliament to
:01:33. > :01:38.make them listen. But the Liberal Democrats say EU membership is good
:01:39. > :01:41.for business. Our view is that outside the EU we will not have full
:01:42. > :01:45.access to the single market and it will cost us jobs. Labour has said
:01:46. > :01:51.an EU referendum is unlikely if the party wins the next general
:01:52. > :01:56.election. It is not a clear, clarion call that the other parties can
:01:57. > :02:00.offer. If we see more transfer of powers, that is when we will have a
:02:01. > :02:03.referendum. It is not in the interest of others, here in the West
:02:04. > :02:06.Midlands, to have a referendum right now. Eleven parties are vying for
:02:07. > :02:09.your vote on Thursday. The results will be declared in Birmingham on
:02:10. > :02:17.Sunday after polls across the EU have closed. Ben Godfrey, BBC
:02:18. > :02:20.Midlands Today. Prayers have been said at churches in Staffordshire
:02:21. > :02:23.for the teenager Stephen Sutton who died on Wednesday.The 19`year`old
:02:24. > :02:26.became famous around the world for the positive attitude he displayed
:02:27. > :02:30.after finding out he had terminal cancer. Tonight, the fundraising
:02:31. > :02:39.page he set up in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust is on the brink of
:02:40. > :02:43.reaching the ?4 million mark. It currently stands at 3.9 million.
:02:44. > :02:45.Meanwhile, hundreds have turned out for a charity football match
:02:46. > :02:47.organised in memory of Birmingham youngster Harry Moseley.
:02:48. > :02:50.Eleven`year`old Harry made bracelets after falling ill and raised almost
:02:51. > :02:55.?1 million for Cancer Research before his death from a brain tumour
:02:56. > :02:57.in 2011. His legacy, the charity Help Harry Help Others, has
:02:58. > :03:05.continued fundraising and organised this afternoon's celebrity match at
:03:06. > :03:08.St Andrews. Families who've lost children because they were born with
:03:09. > :03:11.only half a heart have gathered for the unveiling of a memorial at the
:03:12. > :03:13.National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The dedication was
:03:14. > :03:19.organised by the Birmingham`based charity Little Hearts Matter, which
:03:20. > :03:25.is marking its 20th anniversary. Liz Copper has this report. A brass band
:03:26. > :03:28.accompanied the ceremony as bereaved families gathered to remember their
:03:29. > :03:34.children. Among the musicians, Peter Groves, who lost his daughter
:03:35. > :03:37.Stephanie 20 years ago. They are always with us, but having a
:03:38. > :03:41.permanent place that has a national recognition. We had children that
:03:42. > :03:47.were here and deserve to be remembered. There were prayers and
:03:48. > :03:52.poems, and this contribution from Sophie Williamson from Nuneaton. We
:03:53. > :03:56.never met them, but we know them. We cannot see them, but we feel them.
:03:57. > :04:00.When we are sad we talk to them and have a heart full of love for them.
:04:01. > :04:06.Her reading was in memory of her brother, Jacob, and sister, Megan,
:04:07. > :04:09.who she never met. It was a poignant ceremony ` a chance to share
:04:10. > :04:12.memories and gain comfort from other families whose children suffered
:04:13. > :04:17.from this rare heart condition. So what did today's ceremony mean?
:04:18. > :04:21.Everything. We are able to say their names out loud, because people do
:04:22. > :04:25.not say their names when they are gone. We are able to remember them.
:04:26. > :04:29.We are able to come together as a unit and we are all bereaved
:04:30. > :04:33.families and we are all together in this. It is really important. It
:04:34. > :04:36.gives them that voice, that we were here. And we were helped in going
:04:37. > :04:41.forward. There were special children. This is the only national
:04:42. > :04:44.charity dedicated to providing support for those affected when a
:04:45. > :04:48.child is diagnosed as having half a heart. But the hope is this will
:04:49. > :04:51.become a place of quiet reflection and solace. Liz Copper, BBC Midlands
:04:52. > :05:01.Today at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. I'm sure
:05:02. > :05:04.you'll agree we've had some superb weather ` but for how much longer?
:05:05. > :05:07.Kaye Forster has the forecast. Good evening.
:05:08. > :05:12.We have had some glorious weather through the weekend and it's not
:05:13. > :05:16.over yet. If you have the day off tomorrow, there is more of the same
:05:17. > :05:18.to come. Lots of lovely warm sunshine, and, again, the
:05:19. > :05:23.temperatures will be soaring. And for the rest of the day we stay dry.
:05:24. > :05:26.The clouds will increase later in the night and we will see cloudier
:05:27. > :05:30.skies towards morning time, but we are staying really quite mild, with
:05:31. > :05:33.lows of around 11 or 12 Celsius. Tomorrow morning, a little bit more
:05:34. > :05:36.in the way of cloud, but equally, some decent sunshine breaking
:05:37. > :05:40.through as we head on into the afternoon. That will allow the
:05:41. > :05:43.temperatures to soar once again up to around 23 Celsius. A bit more
:05:44. > :05:47.unsettled from Tuesday onwards and cooling down slowly towards the end
:05:48. > :05:50.of the week. That's all from us. I'll be back with our late news at
:05:51. > :05:53.10.20pm tonight. And tomorrow on Midlands Today, we'll have a special
:05:54. > :05:55.report on the Midlands' entrants in this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
:05:56. > :06:12.Have a good evening. Bye bye. St James Park and Sheffield both hit
:06:13. > :06:18.25 Celsius this afternoon. That gives us our warmest day in nearly
:06:19. > :06:21.nine months, since 5th September 2013. It goes without saying that it
:06:22. > :06:25.is going to be a warm night. Look out for some showers clipping into
:06:26. > :06:30.eastern Scotland. Some of those could be heavy. Still some patchy
:06:31. > :06:31.rain for western Scotland. More persistent
