:00:29. > :00:31.in Birmingham Plans announced for a vigil

:00:32. > :00:34.for teenage cancer victim Stephen Sutton to be held over two

:00:35. > :00:38.days at Lichfield Cathedral. The all`action Brummie verdict

:00:39. > :00:40.on a late`night dance extravaganza And there may have been

:00:41. > :00:53.a stillness and serenity about today, but calm waters are soon to

:00:54. > :00:57.be ruffled by bouncing rain. There will be warnings

:00:58. > :00:59.in force later tonight full details Good evening.

:01:00. > :01:10.A community arts group believes an arson attack on its building was

:01:11. > :01:14.racially motivated. Staff at Ulfah Arts and Media

:01:15. > :01:17.in Birmingham have told police they've been receiving hate emails

:01:18. > :01:23.for the past four months. Its chief executive described

:01:24. > :01:26.the attack as an act of violence. Live now to

:01:27. > :01:29.the group's headquarters in Highgate and our reporter Amy Cole.

:01:30. > :01:32.How bad's the damage, Amy? Around half

:01:33. > :01:36.the unit has been destroyed and the The organisation works to bring

:01:37. > :01:42.young people from different faith groups and communities together

:01:43. > :01:45.through arts and media, but that's All of the carpets, computers,

:01:46. > :02:02.electrical equipment... Sarah Javid is appalled

:02:03. > :02:04.and shocked by what's happened. The fire started in the early hours

:02:05. > :02:08.of yesterday morning and has caused The organisation says it believes

:02:09. > :02:17.it's the victim of a race attack. We have had over a number of months

:02:18. > :02:24.hate mail and e`mails. Only last week, we received a DVD that was

:02:25. > :02:28.anti`Islam. We reported all this to the police. There is a serious

:02:29. > :02:33.investigation going on. It is not just a coincidence that all of this

:02:34. > :02:34.has been going on and all of a sudden there is an attack that is

:02:35. > :02:41.suspected to be arson. West Midlands Police say at this

:02:42. > :02:44.stage they?re keeping an open mind, but are taking steps to find out if

:02:45. > :02:51.the attack was racially motivated. We are looking at CCTV and forensics

:02:52. > :02:54.opportunities. We are putting officers on the street to speak to

:02:55. > :02:56.the community. Ulfah Arts

:02:57. > :02:59.and Media has been running for ten years and helps to bring different

:03:00. > :03:02.faiths and communities together. 18`year`old Aamir Hussain has been

:03:03. > :03:14.involved with the group for five The studio has been destroyed so

:03:15. > :03:17.there are no more shows. We have been doing documentaries and that

:03:18. > :03:25.has been put on hold as well. How do you feel? Devastated. I feel

:03:26. > :03:32.scared and disgusted that somebody would do this. Somebody could have

:03:33. > :03:35.died in the fire. We do broadcasts where we are in there 24 hours.

:03:36. > :03:37.The organisation says it's determined to keep going

:03:38. > :03:47.About ?50,000 worth of damage has been caused, as I said in the

:03:48. > :03:52.report. The volunteers have called it a sickening attack. They are

:03:53. > :03:55.rallying together and said the local community has been really

:03:56. > :03:58.supportive. They have found a temporary office already and they

:03:59. > :04:02.will keep fighting. They have had help clearing up as well. They say

:04:03. > :04:13.the attack will only make them stronger and bigger and better than

:04:14. > :04:18.before. Thank you. Coming up later, remembering Joshua Ribera. A

:04:19. > :04:20.football celebration to promote the legacy of a musician from Birmingham

:04:21. > :04:26.who was stabbed to death. Funeral arrangements have been

:04:27. > :04:28.announced for Stephen Sutton, the Staffordshire teenager who died

:04:29. > :04:30.last week from cancer. A public vigil will be held

:04:31. > :04:33.at Lichfield Cathedral ahead Giles Latcham is

:04:34. > :04:37.at the cathedral for us now. Giles,

:04:38. > :04:47.how can the public get involved? There are all sorts of ways. That is

:04:48. > :04:54.the reflection of the public figure at the young man had become before

:04:55. > :04:59.his death. Fitting that this should all take place at Lichfield

:05:00. > :05:01.Cathedral, one of the oldest public places of Christian worship in the

:05:02. > :05:08.UK and a stone's throw from his home. Stephen's body will lie within

:05:09. > :05:14.the cathedral in what is termed the place of honour from 7pm next

:05:15. > :05:18.Thursday. That is the 29th of May. Members of the public will be

:05:19. > :05:24.invited to take part in a vigil and pay their respects. It will last

:05:25. > :05:29.until midnight. The doors will reopen at 7am on the Friday and the

:05:30. > :05:33.same thing will happen. His body will remain in place until 3pm that

:05:34. > :05:44.afternoon for more members of the public to visit. At 11pm that day,

:05:45. > :05:49.Friday, the 30th, there will be a thumbs up, the gesture that he made

:05:50. > :05:55.so famous, he tweeted it, he made it his own, in effect. There is also a

:05:56. > :06:02.book of condolence opened within the cathedral. His mother has also

:06:03. > :06:06.issued a statement today. She has put out a statement. She is not

:06:07. > :06:12.speaking to the media. Her grief is still very raw. She says that the

:06:13. > :06:17.love and support people are showing for Stephen is a great comfort. We

:06:18. > :06:21.know thousands of people have been inspired by his story. We want to

:06:22. > :06:24.give all of his friends and supporters and local people who

:06:25. > :06:29.supported him from the start the opportunity to come and say goodbye.

:06:30. > :06:34.She goes on to say that there will be a public event later in the year

:06:35. > :06:39.which she hopes many people will be able to attend. She urges people to

:06:40. > :06:44.make further donations to the Teenage Cancer Trust. His amazing

:06:45. > :06:50.fundraising campaign. I think he had an original target of 10,000. It

:06:51. > :06:55.grows and grows. The fundraising page goes to the heart of the

:06:56. > :07:01.Stephen Sutton phenomenon. This evening it is now over ?3 million.

:07:02. > :07:09.It is climbing. The page reference if you want it, just giving, Stephen

:07:10. > :07:16.Sutton. By the end of next week, it might have climbed past the ?4

:07:17. > :07:20.million mark. Remarkable. If you want to pay tribute to Stephen next

:07:21. > :07:25.week, we have put full details on how you can on the Midlands Today

:07:26. > :07:29.Facebook page. The brain injury charity Headway

:07:30. > :07:32.says it's coming under increasing financial pressure because of cuts

:07:33. > :07:34.to local authority spending. Headway has told our reporter

:07:35. > :07:37.Ben Sidwell that a lack of council support

:07:38. > :07:46.for patients means increasing I was celebrating my 30th birthday

:07:47. > :07:52.and I was assaulted from behind. I hit my head on the floor and it

:07:53. > :07:56.caused a brain haemorrhage. Holding your husband in your arms and

:07:57. > :07:59.thinking he is dying is something that will live with me forever.

:08:00. > :08:01.In October last year, Mark Schofield's life changed forever.

:08:02. > :08:04.The father from Kitts Green in Birmingham was so badly injured he

:08:05. > :08:12.I was at war with my own brain. It would not switch off. It was

:08:13. > :08:19.continually throwing everything at me, thoughts of dying. We were at a

:08:20. > :08:25.point where I could not cope. We could not cope. I did not know who

:08:26. > :08:33.to call. It was the only number I heard. I phoned the number and said,

:08:34. > :08:34.I do not know if I'm speaking to the right people, but I need to speak to

:08:35. > :08:36.somebody. That number was for the brain injury

:08:37. > :08:39.charity Headway West Midlands. Last year they helped many people

:08:40. > :08:42.like Mark, in and around Birmingham. But cuts to funding mean many

:08:43. > :08:53.of the services they offer are now The future is very uncertain for all

:08:54. > :08:57.of us. We may be able to run one service but it will not meet the 700

:08:58. > :08:58.people we are able to support last year.

:08:59. > :09:01.The charity helps those with acquired brain injuries re`learn

:09:02. > :09:12.It would be a massive loss. My life has changed. I have only been coming

:09:13. > :09:19.to the centre about six, eight months. It is the best thing that

:09:20. > :09:23.has happened to me since my brain injury. I did not know anything

:09:24. > :09:28.about brain injuries until it happened. It can happen to anyone,

:09:29. > :09:36.it can happen to you. But the charity are very important because

:09:37. > :09:42.without them... I don't know what we would have done.

:09:43. > :09:45.With us now is Luke Griggs from Headway.

:09:46. > :09:48.Some extremely powerful comments in that report,

:09:49. > :10:02.Very much so. Unfortunately. It is just one of a number of groups

:10:03. > :10:08.across the most Midlands `` across the West Midlands and a recent

:10:09. > :10:11.survey found that 85% of our charities are concerned about their

:10:12. > :10:17.ability to provide long`term support to people affected if the level of

:10:18. > :10:22.funding continues. Also the report reveals starkly how life can change

:10:23. > :10:27.in an instant. Absolutely. It can affect anyone at any time. When it

:10:28. > :10:32.does, the effects can be devastating for families as well as the

:10:33. > :10:38.individual. We know that with the right help, there can be life after

:10:39. > :10:45.brain injury. What is the problem now? Simultaneous cuts by local

:10:46. > :10:49.authority funding, welfare benefits, through a variety of different ways

:10:50. > :10:53.that people are being restricted from access to our services. Some

:10:54. > :10:56.people who previously attended a service are saying, you can still

:10:57. > :11:00.go, but we are putting your transport costs so they cannot get

:11:01. > :11:06.in. Other people are finding their level of need is not deemed higher

:11:07. > :11:14.left which is a real shame `` high enough. Every charity thinks it is

:11:15. > :11:19.special, understandably. Why should you get better treatment from

:11:20. > :11:23.councils? We fully appreciate the difficulty local authorities are

:11:24. > :11:29.facing in terms of balancing the books. We are trying to help them to

:11:30. > :11:33.use their pressured resources in a more appropriate way. It is a false

:11:34. > :11:37.economy to stop people receiving the rehabilitation they need if it will

:11:38. > :11:40.help them to become more independent and therefore less likely to be

:11:41. > :11:42.reliant on more expensive long`term state care in the future. Thank you

:11:43. > :11:47.very much indeed. A mother today pleaded guilty to

:11:48. > :11:50.abandoning her newborn baby in The baby,

:11:51. > :11:54.named Jade by hospital staff after being discovered in Stechford,

:11:55. > :11:57.is now eight months old and in The 26`year`old woman from the

:11:58. > :12:01.Kingshurst area of Birmingham, who cannot be named for legal reasons,

:12:02. > :12:04.will be sentenced next month. Showbiz celebrities and sporting

:12:05. > :12:06.stars will honour heroes from all walks of life at the Pride

:12:07. > :12:12.of Birmingham Awards in September. The event at Birmingham Town Hall,

:12:13. > :12:16.fronted by TV and radio presenter Gabby Roslin, will celebrate local

:12:17. > :12:18.people who've overcome adversity or made an outstanding contribution to

:12:19. > :12:22.their community, as well as raising funds for the

:12:23. > :12:32.Queen Elizabeth Hospital. They asked me to be involved and

:12:33. > :12:38.dialect at the chancel stop it is wonderful when unsung heroes get a

:12:39. > :12:44.chance to stand up and we can applaud them `` and I jumped at the

:12:45. > :12:47.chance. It is wonderful. A football gala took place today to

:12:48. > :12:50.remember the life of a young rap musician who was

:12:51. > :12:54.stabbed to death in Birmingham. Joshua Ribera was killed

:12:55. > :12:56.by another teenager outside His short life has become a focal

:12:57. > :13:00.point for an anti`knife campaign. Here's our special

:13:01. > :13:02.correspondent Peter Wilson. This was a day`long football event

:13:03. > :13:06.for families, fans and friends. Joshua Ribera's star was

:13:07. > :13:09.last year on the rise. his first album went to number one

:13:10. > :13:16.in the download charts in September. He was stabbed to death outside

:13:17. > :13:29.a Birmingham nightclub. We set up a charity in his name to

:13:30. > :13:34.show young people there is more to life than hanging around on the

:13:35. > :13:37.streets hurting people and doing negative things. You can have fun,

:13:38. > :13:39.be positive and enjoy your life. Teams including children

:13:40. > :13:41.and staff from the schools Joshua Ribera attended in Bromsgrove today

:13:42. > :13:52.came to the Birmingham City ground. A very talented young man. He did

:13:53. > :13:59.quite a lot with our school. Very nice young chap. An inspiration to a

:14:00. > :14:02.lot of our pupils. We felt so bad when tragedy struck. He was a major

:14:03. > :14:04.part of the school, part of the family.

:14:05. > :14:07.Joshua Ribera was only 18 when he died, yet people here were

:14:08. > :14:15.calling him a legend and predicting great things for his music.

:14:16. > :14:20.He kept getting better and better. He was 18 and he was destined for

:14:21. > :14:22.big things. He was destined for greatness.

:14:23. > :14:24.Depzman, as he was known, wrote lyrics calling

:14:25. > :14:29.A current knife surrender in Birmingham is discussing ways to

:14:30. > :14:37.use his image and music to back the campaign.

:14:38. > :14:43.Because he was such an influential figure, a lot of people will listen.

:14:44. > :14:47.When it happens to someone famous, it sinks in. There is a chance the

:14:48. > :14:59.kids will listen a lot more compare to if it was not a famous person

:15:00. > :15:02.that was stabbed. Josh would pull them aside and say, get your

:15:03. > :15:12.education, don't get caught in this. This was not just a simple

:15:13. > :15:16.kick around. Those close to Joshua Ribera are hoping it was the first

:15:17. > :15:25.of a series of events to raise money to help change young people's lives.

:15:26. > :15:28.The councils holding elections include all seven of the big West

:15:29. > :15:33.One`third of the seats are up for election in all but two.

:15:34. > :15:35.In Cheltenham and Nuneaton and Bedworth, half

:15:36. > :15:48.Ten of the councils will declare their results tomorrow night

:15:49. > :15:57.The European results will not be declared until Sunday night,

:15:58. > :16:11.following the close of polls across the rest of Europe.

:16:12. > :16:18.Patrick Byrne has written a blog post about both sets of elections.

:16:19. > :16:22.Ten of the councils will declare their results tomorrow night and the

:16:23. > :16:26.rest on Friday. The European results will not be declared until Sunday

:16:27. > :16:31.night following the close of voting across the rest of Europe.

:16:32. > :16:34.Midlands Today is in CERN in Geneva all this week ahead

:16:35. > :16:41.of the second anniversary of the discovery of the Higgs boson.

:16:42. > :16:44.The particle which basically holds everything together in this world of

:16:45. > :16:45.ours. And for the first time,

:16:46. > :16:48.we can reveal how one Birmingham company saved the Large Hadron

:16:49. > :16:51.Collider not once, but twice. When disaster threatened,

:16:52. > :16:53.they had engineering solutions. Our science correspondent

:16:54. > :16:55.David Gregory`Kumar reports. This is

:16:56. > :16:57.a story that begins 150 years ago Karl Brandauer starts a company

:16:58. > :17:05.making nibs for dipping pens. Complex shapes stamped

:17:06. > :17:18.from flat metal. This was the original factory built

:17:19. > :17:21.around 1850 on the edge of Birmingham's jewellery Quarter. It

:17:22. > :17:23.is currently being refurbished. The company moved out in 2001 but they

:17:24. > :17:25.did not go far. Just over the road is

:17:26. > :17:27.the new factory. Still a family`owned company

:17:28. > :17:30.and still making complex things And one day they got a call

:17:31. > :17:33.from CERN. They needed a new part, an extra

:17:34. > :17:47.part that only Brandauer could make. We made shielding strips which goes

:17:48. > :17:53.along both sides of the electron beam tubes. To put it simply,

:17:54. > :18:03.without the parts the Large Hadron Collider would not work. The strip

:18:04. > :18:08.we saw goes around the inside of the whole of the ring. Normally we could

:18:09. > :18:14.not show you them in place, but because it is being upgraded, parts

:18:15. > :18:17.of the pipe are up in the lab so we can.

:18:18. > :18:23.Brandauer?s strips weren't actually part of the original design.

:18:24. > :18:30.The physicists said, we need something, this is not going to

:18:31. > :18:33.work. This was designed as an add`on afterwards when manufacturing was

:18:34. > :18:35.ongoing. Problem solved

:18:36. > :18:37.and CERN was ready to start work. Then during initial testing,

:18:38. > :18:40.another unexpected and very serious problem, an explosion severely

:18:41. > :18:42.damaged the ring. Thousands of pressure`release

:18:43. > :18:44.valves would have to be installed CERN turned to Birmingham`based

:18:45. > :18:50.Brandauer once more. They stamped out

:18:51. > :18:53.the clever claw`like springs that hold the newly`installed pressure

:18:54. > :19:06.valves shut. If there is a pressure build up, it

:19:07. > :19:11.pops up? It will come out. It is attached so it cannot go...

:19:12. > :19:14.Soon these sections of the Large Hadron Collider will be refurbished

:19:15. > :19:19.But it's only thanks to a Midlands engineering firm that they got this

:19:20. > :19:27.Many people believe we no longer make anything in Birmingham and it

:19:28. > :19:32.is not true. In a lot of cases it is specialised work. It is not end

:19:33. > :19:37.products, you cannot go into a shop and buy something made by this

:19:38. > :19:39.company. You can going to a shop and buy something that has parts made by

:19:40. > :19:45.it though. CERN is sometimes called

:19:46. > :19:47.a prototype of itself. There were always going to be

:19:48. > :19:49.problems, but it's Midlands expertise the engineers here turned

:19:50. > :19:53.to to help them find solutions to And you can find out how to visit

:19:54. > :19:58.CERN and about what goes on there And he'll be reporting from CERN

:19:59. > :20:03.again for us tomorrow. Fears that

:20:04. > :20:07.an arson attack that destroyed a community arts centre was racially

:20:08. > :20:10.motivated. Another belter

:20:11. > :20:12.of a day weatherwise. Shefali's on standby to tell us

:20:13. > :20:17.if it'll continue tomorrow. Also in tonight's programme: Don't

:20:18. > :20:20.be surprised if you find hundreds dancing in the streets of Birmingham

:20:21. > :20:33.later tonight. He's one of the finest bowlers

:20:34. > :20:36.in world cricket. So it's no wonder that Saeed Ajmal

:20:37. > :20:38.is making The Pakistan off`spinner has just

:20:39. > :20:42.taken thirteen wickets for 94 runs Ian Winter has been to meet him

:20:43. > :20:55.at New Road. It should have been busy here this

:20:56. > :21:00.morning but it was not. No wickets in the middle, just running repairs.

:21:01. > :21:05.No match commentary, just a little light reading. No game for Steve

:21:06. > :21:10.Rhodes and the players, just nets. They beat Essex with a day to

:21:11. > :21:16.spare. All thanks to this man, the spin bowler Saeed Ajmal. Three years

:21:17. > :21:19.ago, he played a key role in saving Worcestershire from relegation. Now

:21:20. > :21:22.he is back to help them win promotion. You have a sparkle in

:21:23. > :21:28.your eye. I am loving playing cricket. I love to play cricket in

:21:29. > :21:37.Britain. No wonder, yesterday he snapped up seven six wickets for

:21:38. > :21:42.just 19 runs. Here is very accurate. He does not give anything away. Very

:21:43. > :21:49.attacking. Also different types of deliveries. I am glad I am retired

:21:50. > :21:54.and not facing him. What makes Worcestershire at a special county

:21:55. > :22:03.for you to come back here? It is a nice city, relaxed and enjoyable.

:22:04. > :22:08.Nice to stay here. Friendly people. That is why I have come here to

:22:09. > :22:14.play. It is not just the Essex batsman who were bamboozled. Four

:22:15. > :22:19.years ago, he claimed five England wickets for Pakistan and a couple of

:22:20. > :22:25.years later in Dubai he took seven including Warwickshire's Ian Bell.

:22:26. > :22:29.To what someone of that quality playing regularly in county

:22:30. > :22:32.cricket, great stuff. International cricketers playing against each

:22:33. > :22:39.other in the County Championship, good to see. His team`mates believe

:22:40. > :22:43.there is plenty more to come this season.

:22:44. > :22:49.You cannot beat it in the sunshine. For the last month,

:22:50. > :22:51.the International Dance Festival in Birmingham has been showcasing

:22:52. > :22:54.the work of artists from As the festival draws to

:22:55. > :22:58.a close this week, a free outdoor event is going to be staged right

:22:59. > :23:02.in the heart of the city centre. Our arts reporter Satnam Rana

:23:03. > :23:04.has been to rehearsals. If you're in

:23:05. > :23:06.Birmingham?s Victoria Square Even the daytime rehearsals

:23:07. > :23:26.have been impressive enough to I thought it was good. Fantastic. I

:23:27. > :23:30.would rather than be doing this than causing trouble on the streets. All

:23:31. > :23:32.of the culture has come together, peace and harmony.

:23:33. > :23:40.This is B Town, a free outdoor production.

:23:41. > :23:48.It is rooted in the city. This production is set in a Birmingham of

:23:49. > :23:52.the future. It is very related to that idea.

:23:53. > :23:54.The show sees dancers from Birmingham, South Korea

:23:55. > :24:04.We spread our language through our dance and movement. It automatically

:24:05. > :24:05.attracts people. We want to spread the right information and positive

:24:06. > :24:07.energy to everybody. But it?s not just the language

:24:08. > :24:10.of dance that?s rubbing off on the performers and it seems it?s

:24:11. > :24:20.not just dancing that?s rubbing Birmingham's accent is rubbing off

:24:21. > :24:31.on me. Oh, my goodness. Give us some Brummie! All right, then. I would

:24:32. > :24:38.like a cup of tea. Stick to dancing! This is the finale event. Bringing

:24:39. > :24:42.international artists into the city, showcasing their talent. And as you

:24:43. > :24:45.can see, there is something quite infectious about it.

:24:46. > :24:47.So, over the next few nights at 9.30pm

:24:48. > :24:52.Victoria Square will be lit up with a performance full of soul,

:24:53. > :25:13.Wow. Another fabulous day. I have a hint of dread about this forecast.

:25:14. > :25:24.There are some good bits to it. We have got quite a few showers over

:25:25. > :25:28.the weekend. It appears now that the frequency of the showers will be

:25:29. > :25:32.dying down as the weekend goes on. Monday will be the best. Saturday

:25:33. > :25:37.the wettest day. It will be generally warm. However, it is the

:25:38. > :25:41.immediate future that will pose problems. The entire southern half

:25:42. > :25:45.of the region comes under the umbrella of this warning coming into

:25:46. > :25:49.force from midnight and through tomorrow as well. This is for

:25:50. > :25:53.between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain falling within a short space of

:25:54. > :25:59.time. That is the worst`case scenario. Likely to lead to standing

:26:00. > :26:05.water causing problems on the roads during rush hour. This crossbow

:26:06. > :26:10.formation of fronts is propelling the rain into our direction and it

:26:11. > :26:14.is governed by low`pressure which will heighten the activity. Tonight

:26:15. > :26:18.we are starting off with clear skies. This evening the cloud will

:26:19. > :26:22.thicken. Later on, after midnight, the rain will arrive from the

:26:23. > :26:26.south`east and you can see most of it is covered by these darker shades

:26:27. > :26:30.of blue. Worst`case scenario, the bright green and yellow which is

:26:31. > :26:37.where the heaviest of the downpours occur. It will be fairly mild to

:26:38. > :26:42.night. It is tonight that bears the brunt of most of this rain and also

:26:43. > :26:46.tomorrow morning but after that we are going to see a raft of fairly

:26:47. > :26:51.heavy lively potent showers packing a punch. They will break out during

:26:52. > :26:55.the course of the afternoon. There is a lot of cloud in between, very

:26:56. > :27:02.brief spells of brightness or sunshine. Temperatures down to 16,

:27:03. > :27:06.17 degrees. The showers will die out tomorrow night and the cloud will

:27:07. > :27:07.break and slightly cooler conditions. Showers after that for

:27:08. > :27:16.Friday and Saturday. Public funding is to be withdrawn

:27:17. > :27:21.from the Police Federation for England and Wales.

:27:22. > :27:24.Fears tonight that an arson attack that destroyed a community arts

:27:25. > :27:27.centre in Birmingham was racially motivated.

:27:28. > :27:32.An appeal for your World Cup stories before we go. 22 days until the big

:27:33. > :27:40.kick`off in Brazil. Are you going? Are you a Brazilian expat? Are you

:27:41. > :27:43.from another competing nation and living here? Please get in touch.

:27:44. > :27:56.That was Midlands Today. Goodbye. that is to find that one item

:27:57. > :28:01.that's going to change their life. Flames are beautiful. Made

:28:02. > :28:05.nice money, that did. Nice money.
