:00:07. > :00:11.A culture of fear and intimhdation, just one of the findings by

:00:12. > :00:15.the schools watchdog, Ofsted, into education in parts of Birmingham.

:00:16. > :00:18.21 inner city schools were subjected to snap inspections,

:00:19. > :00:21.only four were given a clean bill of health.

:00:22. > :00:24.Five, Golden Hillock, Nansen, Oldknow, Park View

:00:25. > :00:28.and Saltley were judged not to be protecting pupils from extrdmism

:00:29. > :00:31.and are being put in special measures.

:00:32. > :00:38.Here's our Special Correspondent, Peter Wilson.

:00:39. > :00:42.The Pink Floyd classic Another Brick In The Wall.

:00:43. > :00:45.A barbed attack on Britain's post` war education system.

:00:46. > :00:50.Up on stage performing with Roger Waters are 17 pupils

:00:51. > :00:55.from the so`called Trojan Horse school, Park View Academy.

:00:56. > :00:58.They say the concert shows they don't isolate their students

:00:59. > :01:11.But Ofsted in a damning report rated the the school as Inadequatd.

:01:12. > :01:18.When I came to my interview, I was immediately hit by the fact that

:01:19. > :01:25.this is an honest, friendly, hard`working school with thd sort of

:01:26. > :01:27.values that we should all bd nurturing.

:01:28. > :01:29.Previously the school was classed as outstanding.

:01:30. > :01:32.Now it?s at the centre of a political firestorm over extremism.

:01:33. > :01:38.Some claim he's the leader of a plot to make schools more Islamic.

:01:39. > :01:45.Others praise him for raising academic standards.

:01:46. > :01:53.Are you trying to make this religious school? Turning it into a

:01:54. > :01:57.faith school by stealth? We think it is wrong to expdct

:01:58. > :02:00.children to leave their herhtage, faith, beliefs, values and culture

:02:01. > :02:11.outside the school gate, and then to pick it out once the leave the

:02:12. > :02:23.school. Is education in Birlingham really failing people? The

:02:24. > :02:34.statistics say no. The local council is not in a position to oversee the

:02:35. > :02:38.school, because more and more of them will fail, and that is unfair.

:02:39. > :02:45.It is creating an accountabhlity gap. This case raises fundalental

:02:46. > :02:50.questions about who really runs our schools, and what choices do parents

:02:51. > :02:53.have in how those schools operate? And with the government intdnding to

:02:54. > :02:59.change the leadership of sole of the schools, how will that impact on

:03:00. > :03:08.Muslim children's motivation to succeed in education? Peter is here

:03:09. > :03:12.now. Do we finally know the complete story now that these Ofsted reports

:03:13. > :03:16.have been published? This story divides people across Birmingham.

:03:17. > :03:20.These five schools have been put into special measures, which means

:03:21. > :03:24.that the government can effdctively change leadership of those schools.

:03:25. > :03:31.Michael Gove says that eviddnce has been uncovered indicating that some

:03:32. > :03:34.schools have evaded proper scrutiny, and effectively engaged in `

:03:35. > :03:39.cover`up. At the same time the schools have hit back with detailed

:03:40. > :03:43.rebuttals. They have also s`id that they have helped to cut crile and

:03:44. > :03:48.raise academic standards. There has been talk of fear and intimhdation

:03:49. > :03:53.featuring senior teachers, but what about extremism, has that bden

:03:54. > :03:59.uncovered? No reports have shown any plots or extremist activitids. This

:04:00. > :04:03.is not a police counterterrorism case, it is an education governance

:04:04. > :04:09.case. But in one of the reports it says that a private investigator was

:04:10. > :04:14.paid by one of the schools to trawl through staff e`mails, effectively

:04:15. > :04:21.spying on them. What have p`rents been saying? I spoke to one angry

:04:22. > :04:24.father who was upset at the language London based politicians have been

:04:25. > :04:29.using, talking about ashing crocodiles. He said, I live in a

:04:30. > :04:32.poor part of Birmingham, not Florida. All I want is for ly kids

:04:33. > :04:38.to get a good education. Th`nk you. So what's the future

:04:39. > :04:40.for Birmingham's schools? Education insiders suggest we could

:04:41. > :04:44.see more of them run by Supdr Heads experienced leaders with

:04:45. > :04:46.responsibility for several schools. Ben Godfrey has been examinhng how

:04:47. > :04:48.some successful headteachers are running their schools

:04:49. > :04:51.like businesses. Where Liam Nolan leads,

:04:52. > :04:59.others follow. When The Prime Minister Wanted To

:05:00. > :05:11.Showcase His Education Reforms, It isn't about the adults, or their

:05:12. > :05:17.own political, religious or whatever views. It is about children and the

:05:18. > :05:22.education of young people. Liam Nolan heads

:05:23. > :05:23.Perry Beeches Academy This is Perry Beeches Three, in the

:05:24. > :05:37.city centre, which opened l`st year. I have been in discussions `bout

:05:38. > :05:42.what has happened in Birmingham and about how I, as a national leader,

:05:43. > :05:43.and we as a national support school, and help support other schools

:05:44. > :05:47.currently facing troubles. Last year, Moor Hall Primarx School

:05:48. > :05:50.in Sutton Coldfield Birmingham's first

:05:51. > :05:53.Co`operative Trust. They're state funded but run

:05:54. > :05:56.independently of the City Council. In recent inspections, thred were

:05:57. > :06:09.rated outstanding by Ofsted. We shared how we conduct medtings,

:06:10. > :06:15.selection process, all of that is a rigorous process, we shared it with

:06:16. > :06:23.the trust. Also checking up that we are doing those procedures hn the

:06:24. > :06:27.right way. It is by no means a definitive answer. But therd is a

:06:28. > :06:28.feeling in Birmingham that lore schools are set to break aw`y from

:06:29. > :06:34.the local authority. That's all from me, Newsnight is

:06:35. > :06:36.starting shortly on BBC Two, where they'll be talking to head

:06:37. > :06:39.of Ofsted, Sir Michael Wilshaw. I'll leave you with

:06:40. > :06:49.the weather with Shefali. Thank you. Although not immddiately

:06:50. > :06:53.apparent, we have got more showers to come tomorrow, there is `n

:06:54. > :06:57.improvement on the way this week. It is going to be quite warm. We have

:06:58. > :07:03.still got showers to contend with through tonight before they die

:07:04. > :07:07.away, leaving most part dry. Quite murky, muggy and mild. Tempdratures

:07:08. > :07:12.dropping to 11, 13 Celsius. Tomorrow, a bit of sunshine to start

:07:13. > :07:16.with, but it will not be long before we start to see the next bunch of

:07:17. > :07:21.showers. These will be quitd widespread tomorrow. As you can see,

:07:22. > :07:26.from those very vibrant colours and dark centres, there could bd thunder

:07:27. > :07:29.and hail as well. Temperatures rising to 19 Celsius. Freshdr and

:07:30. > :07:32.cooler tomorrow, with a brisk south`westerly breeze. More details

:07:33. > :07:37.of us, but I'll pass you overto Jay. -- over to jay now.

:07:38. > :07:48.Good evening, it was the warmest day of the year. Warm for some, but

:07:49. > :07:52.thundery for others. This line of really intense thunderstorms moved

:07:53. > :07:56.through. Large hail and gusty winds and rain as well. That moved away

:07:57. > :07:59.and now we look towards the south and you can see the rain moving

:08:00. > :08:05.northwards. So let's look at the cloud which is heading our way and

:08:06. > :08:07.some of it does look really quite threatening particularly in the

:08:08. > :08:12.south-eastern corner there. That's going to bring heavy rain. With it

:08:13. > :08:15.the risk of thunder and lightening. The rain will move away from the

:08:16. > :08:19.South East, and out into the North Sea, but it may linger further

:08:20. > :08:22.north. Just moving away from the south-west and into Wales and into

:08:23. > :08:26.Northern Ireland by dawn. Another mild night. 12 Celsius in the north

:08:27. > :08:29.and maybe 13 Celsius or 14 Celsius in the south. To start the day

:08:30. > :08:35.across Northern England, it's looking good. It is dry and bright,

:08:36. > :08:45.but there will be wetter weather around the borders and up towards

:08:46. > :08:46.Shetland it will be wet. Heavy showers around in Northern
