:00:00. > :00:08.Birmingham academy schools placed in special measures by Ofstdd to

:00:09. > :00:14.We've spent the day inside Park View Academy to find ott how

:00:15. > :00:22.It does not matter what is written down on a piece of paper,

:00:23. > :00:29.A track record of cancellathons late trains and job cuts.

:00:30. > :00:33.But London Midland gets an extension to its contract.

:00:34. > :00:37.It seems to be being done at the convenience of the Government rather

:00:38. > :00:40.than for the passengers or, indeed, for the train operating company

:00:41. > :00:44.The end of the road for the Bulls ` Hereford United are thrown out

:00:45. > :00:49.We get the World Cup predictions of former England international

:00:50. > :00:54.I think they are very sharp and quick and Roy Hodgson knows

:00:55. > :00:58.Even if they go through the stages by winning one nil over and over,

:00:59. > :01:04.And if the recent thunderstorms have left you less than impressed

:01:05. > :01:06.and with a pessimistic about the future, don?t despair

:01:07. > :01:24.Parents, pupils and staff f`ce an uncertain future tonight

:01:25. > :01:28.after the Government announced it was withdrawing the funding for two

:01:29. > :01:31.Birmingham schools ` and threatening to do the same at two others.

:01:32. > :01:34.Park View and Nansen Primary will losd their

:01:35. > :01:38.cash from Whitehall, while Golden Hillock and Oldknow Academy have

:01:39. > :01:44.They have all been rated in`dequate by Ofsted and put

:01:45. > :01:48.It follows an investigation into schools allegedly targdted as

:01:49. > :01:53.With so much focus on how these schools are run,

:01:54. > :01:58.Our Special Correspondent Pdter Wilson has spent the day at

:01:59. > :02:03.Students at Parkview Academx in Alum Rock are taking

:02:04. > :02:10.Exams are on and results here are very seriously.

:02:11. > :02:13.But these young people are digesting more than just dry facts

:02:14. > :02:20.Their school has been under examination and it's failed.

:02:21. > :02:24.I was allowed inside and no governors or teachers will

:02:25. > :02:28.talk, but I was able to spe`k to Kabir Khan who is 15.

:02:29. > :02:38.His father went to the school, so too do his brother and shster.

:02:39. > :02:49.This school is not inadequate. It is outstanding. It is not mattdr what

:02:50. > :02:53.is written down on a piece of paper. The Government were saying that

:02:54. > :02:58.young people like you were perhaps safe here. That there is potential

:02:59. > :03:04.for extremism because of a narrow kind of education. I have bden here

:03:05. > :03:08.for four years and I do not think I have been unsafe here. I have not

:03:09. > :03:12.experienced anything bad here. I have been getting the best results

:03:13. > :03:19.that I can get. My teachers have been pleased and if there is

:03:20. > :03:25.anything that is bad it was `` would have happened. Do you get a wide

:03:26. > :03:33.broad range of education? Especially that religion is? yes. Christianity,

:03:34. > :03:35.Judaism, seekers, Hinduism. We have been taught about them all. We know

:03:36. > :03:37.to respect them all equally. The Government is to cut

:03:38. > :03:39.the school's funding becausd of supposed segregation of the

:03:40. > :03:42.sexes and an alleged narrow Muslim She came outside to find me

:03:43. > :03:58.and voice her opinion. This school has been given ` bad

:03:59. > :04:05.reputation. I don't like th`t. It doesn't help anybody. What `bout

:04:06. > :04:10.these allegations that girls are treated differently? actually, girls

:04:11. > :04:14.are given an equal chance. Dven more favoured in some cases. The school

:04:15. > :04:14.will supporters just as much as the boys.

:04:15. > :04:17.Education Minister Lord Nash, writing to Tahir Alam,

:04:18. > :04:20.a governor at the Academy Trust said he had grave concerns

:04:21. > :04:24.He criticised the Trust for failing to promote

:04:25. > :04:29.the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils.

:04:30. > :04:32.And for not encouraging the pupils to respect British values

:04:33. > :04:43.of democracy, respect and tolerance of other faiths and beliefs.

:04:44. > :04:49.That letter does not pull any punches. It is clear the Government

:04:50. > :04:52.is determined to take money away from these schools or at le`st away

:04:53. > :04:58.from the people who are currently running the schools. It is `lso

:04:59. > :05:02.clear that the Department for Education is determined to change

:05:03. > :05:04.the leadership here which could mean the replacement of the headteacher

:05:05. > :05:05.and the governors. The Government is saying thd schools

:05:06. > :05:08.are not teaching British values Outside another Academy,

:05:09. > :05:11.theyb were warned their funding to could be cut and parents ard

:05:12. > :05:21.reacting with astonishment. 15,000 children have been affected

:05:22. > :05:25.throughout this investigation and this palaver. Why

:05:26. > :05:29.At one leading Muslim charity, there was a sense of bewilddrment

:05:30. > :05:33.at how the Government have handled this Trojan Horse school crhsis

:05:34. > :05:39.macro we need to look at thdse issues together. We need to unite

:05:40. > :05:43.and address them as one. Whdn we start doing that our young people

:05:44. > :05:44.will have a bit of belief in these wonderful British values.

:05:45. > :05:48.I asked Kabir if the school had prepared him for our intervhew.

:05:49. > :05:51.He said no, his words were his own, whatever the rights and wrongs

:05:52. > :05:53.of the complex and often divisive story.

:05:54. > :05:56.The young people themselves say that they are proud to be British,

:05:57. > :06:09.Cath Mackie is in Birminghal city centre for us this evening

:06:10. > :06:12.A lot of people might be confused with how an academy school differs

:06:13. > :06:21.The schools which have been told their funding could be withdrawn `

:06:22. > :06:28.It means they are funded directly from Central Government and not

:06:29. > :06:38.under authority control. I can talk and debate about its four hours but

:06:39. > :06:44.it is what people do. Essentially they have more freedom. What happens

:06:45. > :06:54.now? the 4th to respond to the ldtters

:06:55. > :06:58.from Education Minister, Lord Nash. But we are expecting the schools

:06:59. > :07:01.involved to mount legal challenges. I spoke this afternoon to

:07:02. > :07:04.an education expert who says we are in pretty new territory herd

:07:05. > :07:08.and we can expect to see sole legal In an ideal world,

:07:09. > :07:11.if these schools are taken over by another trust, it should be

:07:12. > :07:17.a bit like moving house ` you This leaves us with a lot of

:07:18. > :07:19.uncertainty. So for parents of children who are due to start in

:07:20. > :07:23.September, but does this me`n for them? It is a worrying time for

:07:24. > :07:27.them. I spoke to one educathon expert and he said we are in

:07:28. > :07:31.uncharted waters. He is expdcting a legal precedents to be set. He said

:07:32. > :07:37.if an academy is taken over by another trust, in an ideal world, it

:07:38. > :07:40.should be like a house move. That is, contracts exchanged, destruction

:07:41. > :07:45.get to a minimum, kids go to school on Friday and turn up again on

:07:46. > :07:48.Monday and all they see is the change of name. But there is a legal

:07:49. > :07:56.challenge and it could all get a bit messy. 21 schools were caught up in

:07:57. > :08:00.Ofsted investigation with fhve judged to be inadequate. But the

:08:01. > :08:08.report said leadership was outstanding and one of them was

:08:09. > :08:09.Waverley school in both league. We spoke to a head teacher caught up in

:08:10. > :08:15.the Trojan Horse controversx. Bordesley Green in Birmingh`m are

:08:16. > :08:18.from ethnic minorities, mostly It was singled out by Ofsted under

:08:19. > :08:22.their Trojan Horse investig`tions, but unlike some of the other

:08:23. > :08:25.schools, it ended up being praised. Ofsted also said leadership

:08:26. > :08:27.and management where outstanding, pleasing news for the head teacher

:08:28. > :08:36.of nine years, Kamal Hanif. He believes such qualities `re vital

:08:37. > :08:39.when dealing with governors ` especially if they don't agree with

:08:40. > :08:51.something the school is doing. If the objections it is abott

:08:52. > :08:55.managing both getting the vhewpoint of the community across. Because

:08:56. > :08:57.sometimes, governors are not always present a tip of community views,

:08:58. > :08:58.although they may think thex are. The children are taught

:08:59. > :09:01.about many other faiths, thdy go to other countries on exchange visits,

:09:02. > :09:16.but also visits closer to home. With schools in white areas and

:09:17. > :09:19.rural schools work students do not interact his shooters of ethnic

:09:20. > :09:25.minorities, we have exchangds there and their students come and join

:09:26. > :09:28.projects with us. Last time, we had a diversity day I went to a Buddhist

:09:29. > :09:34.centre and we learned about different cultures and religions.

:09:35. > :09:38.Last time, I looked at Hindtism I knew nothing about it beford so I

:09:39. > :09:43.learned about what they belheve and away their religion works. What

:09:44. > :09:49.being said in the news does not really apply to us. Our school is

:09:50. > :09:54.different. Islam is not forced upon us. Everybody gets along. There is

:09:55. > :09:58.no racism or anything like that But even though Waverley is

:09:59. > :10:00.an undoubted success, the head teacher believes the system

:10:01. > :10:03.needs improving to help defhne It's been confirmed that Tr`in

:10:04. > :10:31.operator London Midland has had The firm attracted strong criticism

:10:32. > :10:35.from commuters after cancelling more than a thousand trains due to

:10:36. > :10:38.a driver shortage. It will continue running tr`ins

:10:39. > :10:41.across our region until March 2 16. Here's our Transport Correspondent,

:10:42. > :10:45.Peter Plisner. It's not been an easy ride

:10:46. > :10:48.for London Midland passengers, with cancellations and late trains a

:10:49. > :10:51.regular occurrence on some routes. Two years ago

:10:52. > :10:54.the company was forced to c`ncel more than a thousand trains after it

:10:55. > :10:57.couldn't find enough drivers. A year later it was forced to

:10:58. > :10:59.apologise Then, earlier this year,

:11:00. > :11:04.the company announced jobs cuts Despite that, London Midland has

:11:05. > :11:25.been awarded six`month extension I am surprised. But apart from a

:11:26. > :11:27.comedy service has been good. Some days it is not so good.

:11:28. > :11:30.And it's passenger concerns that have led to Rail Watchdog to

:11:31. > :11:37.In a statement, the Department for Transport says:

:11:38. > :11:40."We want the new London Midland franchise to deliver improvdd

:11:41. > :11:42.benefits and services for customers."

:11:43. > :11:47."The first part of this process involves making use of the planned

:11:48. > :11:56.six month extension option built into the existing contract."

:11:57. > :12:03.The fact is, the Department for Transport have few other options but

:12:04. > :12:05.to extend the franchise to hold the competition and allow other

:12:06. > :12:10.companies to run the chains would have taken too long. There `re other

:12:11. > :12:11.issues to including a remapping exercise that could change the way

:12:12. > :12:13.services are run. This map,

:12:14. > :12:15.obtained by Midlands Today, shows one idea ` routes could be changed

:12:16. > :12:18.to focus on commuters? servhces The proposal would also givd local

:12:19. > :12:29.authorities here a bigger s`y What we are seeing in London and

:12:30. > :12:33.Merseyside is real benefits to passengers coming through bx local

:12:34. > :12:37.authorities controlling the rail services in partnership with

:12:38. > :12:40.operator. In both those casds, we have now got top performing rail

:12:41. > :12:41.operators and that is what xou want to see in the West Midlands.

:12:42. > :12:44.But any changes are clearly still a long way off.

:12:45. > :12:47.There's already talk that London Midland might be askdd to run

:12:48. > :12:49.trains for even longer ` perhaps until June 2017.

:12:50. > :12:53.We've had plenty of reaction to this story on our Facebook page today.

:12:54. > :12:58.?London Midland make my short commute in to work a nightm`re.

:12:59. > :13:01.When their trains are delaydd you never get an explanation or apology,

:13:02. > :13:06.and, often, when they randomly cancel a train

:13:07. > :13:12.?It's not that long ago there was talk about London Midland

:13:13. > :13:14.being stripped of their franchise due to poor standards.

:13:15. > :13:18.As a frequent commuter on the Cross City line, I can't say I've noticed

:13:19. > :13:21.any improvement since ` so `m completely baffled by the r`tionale

:13:22. > :13:30.Many a time I've left university at 8pm,

:13:31. > :13:34.trudged in the rain to Five Ways in Birmingham, then checked at the desk

:13:35. > :13:38.Then waiting around for an hour or so, freezing cold

:13:39. > :13:41.and soaking wet, to eventually find it has been cancelled.?

:13:42. > :13:44.and soaking wet, to eventually find it has been cancelled.

:13:45. > :13:49.I travel from Tamworth to London and back fairly frequently.

:13:50. > :13:51.I have no problem with the service at all.

:13:52. > :13:54.The only issue is the short formations in the rush hours which

:13:55. > :13:57.they will eliminate by delivering new trains from December.

:13:58. > :14:04.Hereford United have been expelled from the Football Conferencd.

:14:05. > :14:07.They'd been given a deadline to today to pay their

:14:08. > :14:10.footballing debts, but a st`tement this afternoon from the Conference

:14:11. > :14:26.So the celebrations were all for nothing? It was a dramatic day. The

:14:27. > :14:29.celebrations afterwards, were particularly intense becausd it

:14:30. > :14:35.seemed as though it was a ttrning point at last. They had big debts

:14:36. > :14:45.and suddenly he was a bit of hope and momentum. But sadly, it was all

:14:46. > :14:49.for nothing. So what happens next? That is a big question. One thing we

:14:50. > :14:53.can say for sure is that thdy will now go down two divisions. But in

:14:54. > :14:56.the conference Premier they also run the next league below them. So it is

:14:57. > :15:00.now the question weather thd Southern league will let thdm in.

:15:01. > :15:05.But they have grave problems. They have not pay their debts or their

:15:06. > :15:09.players since January. They have two players on the book. They h`ve no

:15:10. > :15:14.manager. They are a mess. I try to speak to the club this afternoon,

:15:15. > :15:17.and we do not even know who is running it it David Keyte Rhddick

:15:18. > :15:21.Tommy Agombar who was brought in the new investments. If they have not

:15:22. > :15:27.paid off their debts, has Tommy Agombar but in any money at all And

:15:28. > :15:29.ministration brats beckons. That is 90 years of footballing history in

:15:30. > :15:41.Hereford under threat this dvening. The High Court

:15:42. > :15:43.in Birmingham has been told a date has been set for a jtdicial

:15:44. > :15:47.review of a ?14 million loan given to the operators of Coventrx's Ricoh

:15:48. > :15:50.Arena by the City Council. The council took out a loan in

:15:51. > :15:53.January so operators Arena Coventry Coventry City played

:15:54. > :15:57.at the arena until this sumler, The club's then owners, Sist,

:15:58. > :16:01.called for the review, which is listed for the 10th of June

:16:02. > :16:05.at the High Court in London. Sisu claimed the loan was

:16:06. > :16:09.an unlawful use of public ftnds While some sheep around the Midlands

:16:10. > :16:12.are happily skipping about without a heavy fleecd on

:16:13. > :16:14.many others are still sweltdring. Farmers have fallen behind schedule

:16:15. > :16:17.because of the wet weather. They'll also be hoping

:16:18. > :16:19.for more money for their wool this year th`n 1

:16:20. > :16:23.months ago, when the price crashed. Here's our Rural Affairs

:16:24. > :16:25.Correspondent, David Gregorx`Kumar. On this Albrighton farm

:16:26. > :16:26.in Shropshire, a mix of sunshine and showers is

:16:27. > :16:33.holding up the sheep shearing. It has been a problem this xear It

:16:34. > :16:36.is the wet one day, try the next. This morning it rained. And the one

:16:37. > :16:37.thing we can do is she a shdep when they are wet. Will will not store

:16:38. > :16:39.when it is wet so we have them dry. Wool has always been import`nt

:16:40. > :16:42.to the Midlands and Wolverh`mpton Today, farmers are grateful

:16:43. > :16:46.if the price of the fleece covers And they certainly don't want a

:16:47. > :16:58.repeat of last year's price crash. The wool price has not been that bad

:16:59. > :17:05.thanks in part to the Chinese market. Last year, the Chindse

:17:06. > :17:08.pulled out and so the wool price reflected that. This year though,

:17:09. > :17:09.they are back and the prices have recovered.

:17:10. > :17:12.Our farmers sell 95% of their wool through the Wool

:17:13. > :17:21.If you don't go through marketing boards you can look into sm`ller

:17:22. > :17:26.scale business options such as spinning it and making your own wool

:17:27. > :17:32.products. Such as jumpers or blogs which people make themselves. There

:17:33. > :17:37.is one chap who has even coffins made of wool. He has lined with it.

:17:38. > :17:37.So just be innovative and do what else you can with it.

:17:38. > :17:40.Wool linings for coffins will likely remain a niche market.

:17:41. > :17:44.For now, our sheep farmers will be hoping the Chinese want lore

:17:45. > :17:48.And our sheep will be hoping for a dry spell so they can finally

:17:49. > :17:52.David Gregory Kumar, BBC Midlands Today, Albrighton.

:17:53. > :18:00.Birmingham academy schools placed in special measures by Ofstdd to

:18:01. > :18:05.Your detailed weather forecast to come shortly.

:18:06. > :18:10.The schoolchildren counting down to Rio ` how the World Cup is helping

:18:11. > :18:24.Fashion and the far east. The campaign hots up to build a Chinese

:18:25. > :18:32.arch in Birmingham. Aston Villa have signed the former

:18:33. > :18:35.England midfielder Joe Cole Cole, who's 32, also played

:18:36. > :18:39.for Chelsea and Liverpool He's agreed a two`year contract

:18:40. > :18:46.and says he's really excited The World Cup in Brazil is just two

:18:47. > :18:52.days away, with England's fhrst game And the former Wolves strikdr Steve

:18:53. > :18:57.Bull believes Roy Hodgson's squad During his prolific goal`scoring

:18:58. > :19:05.career at Molineux, And he was part of the Engl`nd squad

:19:06. > :19:09.that reached the World Cup 24 years ago, World Cup sticker

:19:10. > :19:15.books like this contained His chocolate Labrador Besshe is

:19:16. > :19:19.blissfully unaware that Bully had scored so many goals in the lower

:19:20. > :19:22.leagues for Wolves and that Bobby Robson thought he'd bd perfect

:19:23. > :19:32.to play for England at Italha ' 0. five years ago I was an amateur

:19:33. > :19:45.footballer so it was a dreal come true really. I couldn't belheve it.

:19:46. > :19:47.I thought, I'm standing next to these world`class players I couldn't

:19:48. > :19:49.believe it. This was the moment he clinched

:19:50. > :19:52.his place in the World Cup squad. And today,

:19:53. > :19:56.the Wolves legend is still so proud Bully was on the bench

:19:57. > :20:00.for that heart`breaking semh`final He was just about to come

:20:01. > :20:04.on with 10 minutes left. Then Lineker's goal sent

:20:05. > :20:17.the match into extra`time and Bully If he had been on the field for

:20:18. > :20:22.England, would you have takdn the kick? I stood by, the others do it.

:20:23. > :20:25.The only get one chance of scoring in the World Cup and if you get to

:20:26. > :20:32.take a penalty get out therd in your head down.

:20:33. > :20:34.Last Saturday night, Bully was one of the celebrhty

:20:35. > :20:39.And he's confident that England won't end up Pointless against

:20:40. > :20:51.I think they are sharp and puick. Roy Hodgson knows what he's doing.

:20:52. > :20:52.Even if they go to the statd is winning over won over and over

:20:53. > :20:53.again, they will take them `ll. His World Cup shirt is one

:20:54. > :20:56.of Bully's most prized possdssions. How he'd love to see this England

:20:57. > :21:00.team do even better than Bobby's For many school children,

:21:01. > :21:07.the temptation to chat in class about the World Cup over thd coming

:21:08. > :21:10.weeks will be overwhelming. Well, at one school in Shropshire

:21:11. > :21:13.they're being encouraged to do just that ` and they'll be learnhng

:21:14. > :21:16.something in the process. Joanne Writtle's been to visit

:21:17. > :21:19.the Year Sixes at Market Dr`yton Junior School, who are dedicating
