:00:07. > :00:17.Welcome to Midlands Today. The headlines. A Birmingham MP says

:00:18. > :00:23.plans for a huge hit HS2 terminal in Birmingham should be scrappdd. We

:00:24. > :00:26.will be hearing what businesses think about his surprising

:00:27. > :00:30.comments. Residents unhappy that therd are

:00:31. > :00:39.plans afoot for another Bendfits Street programme in Birmingham.

:00:40. > :00:42.West Bromwich Albion's new boss on the fans. The fans are passhonate

:00:43. > :00:47.but they will find that I al incredibly passionate as well.

:00:48. > :00:50.Penetrating, poignant and priceless, Dawn French back in the Midlands

:00:51. > :00:55.with her one`woman show. And it was a hot and humid day, on

:00:56. > :00:58.par with some of the artist this year. There are fresh editions on

:00:59. > :01:07.the way soon. I will tell you about those and about the dog temperatures

:01:08. > :01:12.later in the programme. `` `bout the top temperatures.

:01:13. > :01:18.Good evening. They Midlands MP has called on the Government to scrap a

:01:19. > :01:26.key part of the high`speed rail network. Liam Byrne has said that

:01:27. > :01:29.the land would be better usdd by businesses to create thousands of

:01:30. > :01:35.jobs in one of the worst and implement blackspots.

:01:36. > :01:40.Just one of the many Midlands battle grounds in the row over HS2. This is

:01:41. > :01:47.the site, formerly home to LDV, which used to imply 800 people. Now

:01:48. > :01:50.it is in marked for a depot cleaning and maintaining trains. The local MP

:01:51. > :01:59.today called on the Governmdnt to scrap the idea.

:02:00. > :02:07.It is the size of 105 footb`ll pitches full subsites like that to

:02:08. > :02:10.`` do not come along often. You can get thousands of jobs on thhs site

:02:11. > :02:13.and you can do it in the short term. What I am demanding is the best for

:02:14. > :02:26.Birmingham and the best for Hodge Hill. Despite his objections, they

:02:27. > :02:31.took another look and think that this is the best for the region It

:02:32. > :02:34.was considered in May 2013. This was largely due to the fact that it is

:02:35. > :02:42.operationally better than other sites considered. Liam Byrnd claims

:02:43. > :02:47.the site has the potential for several thousand jobs. The

:02:48. > :02:53.Government's think it be more like 7300.

:02:54. > :02:57.The Government says that if the depot was built here, it wotld

:02:58. > :03:03.create 640 jobs and a furthdr 8 0 for the rest of the site. While the

:03:04. > :03:13.local MPs has its doubt, thhs local business leader says that it is the

:03:14. > :03:19.wrong call. We all want to give them hope. I think there is hope now in

:03:20. > :03:23.going with the maintenance depot as opposed to hope tomorrow, which may

:03:24. > :03:27.not happen. If the HS2 depot is built here, it will not be hn use

:03:28. > :03:31.until around 2026, giving local people who are desperate for jobs

:03:32. > :03:38.wondering what will happen hn the meantime.

:03:39. > :03:42.Thank you for joining us. Coming up later, the scourge of motorhsts in

:03:43. > :03:46.Coventry, behind`the`scenes at the multi`million pound Toll Bar

:03:47. > :03:58.roadworks, which will be thdre for another two years at least.

:03:59. > :04:05.It put a Birmingham street hn the headlines for months. Benefhts

:04:06. > :04:09.Street was a highlight of Channel 4's calendar. It in criticism for

:04:10. > :04:13.the way the people were portrayed. The company behind this is `re

:04:14. > :04:18.asking residents to take part in more filming. A public meethng has

:04:19. > :04:25.been called. Our reporter is there. What is the main concern? Chiefly,

:04:26. > :04:33.more bad plotless T, so emotive is the possibility that `` mord

:04:34. > :04:39.publicity. Groups have calldd an easy meeting. They will not give up

:04:40. > :04:42.without a fight. You may relember how controversial the series was. It

:04:43. > :04:46.seemed it was all anybody could talk about, including the Prime Linister.

:04:47. > :04:51.Residents were upset becausd they felt they were misrepresentdd and

:04:52. > :04:54.betrayed by Channel 4. Now ht has emerged that the production company

:04:55. > :05:00.has approached some of the residents to try to drum up interest to

:05:01. > :05:07.produce a follow`up. I tried to speak to some of the people here but

:05:08. > :05:12.they did not want to talk to me Now that the dust has settled, what kind

:05:13. > :05:15.of impact that series have? I think that if you want outside, you will

:05:16. > :05:21.see that the James Turner Street sign was stolen from beside the

:05:22. > :05:23.school wall. The programme had a terrible impact on the stredt and

:05:24. > :05:34.the sign was stolen because there were endless tourists, in inverted

:05:35. > :05:41.commas, stealing the street signs. They abuse the children. Thdy made

:05:42. > :05:45.our jobs as educators harder to do. The programme hindered us and

:05:46. > :05:49.hindered the reputation of the street. Channel 4 have said in the

:05:50. > :05:52.statement that they are not necessarily looking to do another

:05:53. > :05:56.series here in Birmingham btt are investigating other parts of the

:05:57. > :06:00.country. How do you feel about that? Any team unity that has been

:06:01. > :06:05.investigated, whatever that means, being pressurised into filmhng,

:06:06. > :06:11.should stop and talk to people in this community and see what it cost

:06:12. > :06:15.them. Again, the production companies are being disingenuous

:06:16. > :06:19.because they had been speakhng to people on the Street this afternoon.

:06:20. > :06:26.The prize for them would be debate able to come back, saving their

:06:27. > :06:30.falling audience figures from the pit. They are in this cash will stop

:06:31. > :06:32.thank you for talking to us. You can hear strength of feeling th`t and

:06:33. > :06:37.how residents really do not want this to happen. Thank you.

:06:38. > :06:39.A 21`year`old man from Worcestershire has pleaded guilty to

:06:40. > :06:44.the manslaughter of his two`month`old daughter. Tyldr

:06:45. > :06:51.Vallance admitted killing Isabella in 2012. He will be sentencdd at a

:06:52. > :06:54.later date. Isabella's mothdr has pleaded not guilty to causing or

:06:55. > :06:58.allowing the death of a child and child cruelty. She will stand trial

:06:59. > :07:01.next Tuesday. The inquest into the death of a

:07:02. > :07:07.British teenager who died in the River Arun concluded it was an

:07:08. > :07:15.accident. He got into trouble while summing open water with fridnds in

:07:16. > :07:19.the Park in March. The inqudst heard how his friends and everythhng they

:07:20. > :07:22.could to save him after he got into difficulties in the water.

:07:23. > :07:29.The Prime Minister has praised Stephen Sutton in the Commons today

:07:30. > :07:34.for his fundraising efforts. He raised more than ?4 million for the

:07:35. > :07:39.teenage Cancer trust. He was awarded an MBE last week. Mr Cameron was as

:07:40. > :07:43.bonding to Michael Fabricant who thanked him for his part in getting

:07:44. > :07:47.Stephen his honour. I think it is right that our honour systel does

:07:48. > :07:51.properly reward people that give to charity, that give of their time,

:07:52. > :07:55.from the very bottom to the very top. I think there is probably more

:07:56. > :08:00.we can do to make sure our honour system really reflects what the

:08:01. > :08:04.British public want, which hs to see compassion rewarded.

:08:05. > :08:07.It is costing more than ?100 million and will take three years to

:08:08. > :08:12.complete. The roadworks at Toll Bar Island in Coventry already caused

:08:13. > :08:17.problems, with some commuters facing hours of delays. The Highwaxs Agency

:08:18. > :08:28.says things are improving and will be well worth the wait.

:08:29. > :08:31.85,000 vehicles use the road here. Six months into a three`year, ? 00

:08:32. > :08:36.million improving scheme, the Highways Agency maintains that the

:08:37. > :08:40.roadworks are on chisel and will make a difference. You can see the

:08:41. > :08:46.existing roundabout. Behind us, this is where the new roundabout will be.

:08:47. > :08:52.It will be a lot of bigger. Will it stop the traffic jams? The hdea is

:08:53. > :08:56.yes. What is happening is 44% of the traffic will be taken off from the

:08:57. > :09:02.roundabout and will go under a new overpass. Work so far has included

:09:03. > :09:06.moving services, ready for the main construction of an underpass. To

:09:07. > :09:12.give you an idea of the scale of this job, this is now going to be

:09:13. > :09:21.the new slip road. Six months ago, it was a field. 470,000 cubhc metres

:09:22. > :09:29.of earth have been moved already to help create the underpass. That is

:09:30. > :09:31.about 2500 double`decker buses. One question motorists, businesses and

:09:32. > :09:38.residents in the area reallx want to know is all of this actuallx going

:09:39. > :09:43.to help the traffic? We are talking about a next five or ten minutes of

:09:44. > :09:47.delays on top of the existing ones. They will be approved Farsldy once

:09:48. > :09:51.the scheme is completed. Delays on business parks in the area have

:09:52. > :09:57.introduced after monitoring the roadworks and changes to thd traffic

:09:58. > :10:01.light sequences. Today, somd drivers were still unhappy. We're not

:10:02. > :10:03.talking about two or three weeks of destruction, we're talking `bout

:10:04. > :10:08.three years of destruction. I will stay clear of Coventry for three

:10:09. > :10:12.years if I can. We will see what happens. Hopefully it will get

:10:13. > :10:22.better. Otherwise, the burgdr van lady will sorted out! They `re due

:10:23. > :10:27.to finish in September 2016. BBC Coventry and Warwickshire will

:10:28. > :10:29.have more about the work at Toll Bar Island and the impact on colmuters

:10:30. > :10:42.on Debra Chris Jones tomorrow morning.

:10:43. > :10:46.It is coming up to 6:40pm. Your detailed weather forec`st will

:10:47. > :10:50.come shortly from Shefali. @lso tonight, how the gardens of a

:10:51. > :10:52.Warwickshire stately home whll be transformed this weekend by the

:10:53. > :10:57.throaty roar of dozens of r`lly cars.

:10:58. > :11:00.And Dawn French on the challenges of going solo on the challenges of

:11:01. > :11:01.going solo onstage and talkhng honestly about life's highs and

:11:02. > :11:11.lows. In the last 20 years, more than a

:11:12. > :11:15.quarter of the pubs in the region have gone out of business. @s part

:11:16. > :11:19.of our series on the pub and brewing industry, Midlands today has been

:11:20. > :11:23.looking at the country pubs that are diversifying to survive. Many are

:11:24. > :11:28.now taking part in a scheme called the Pub Is The Hub. It was said

:11:29. > :11:31.above why Prince Charles. `` it was set up by Prince Charles.

:11:32. > :11:34.The country pub ` an import`nt part of village life for centurids.

:11:35. > :11:36.Back in 1986 at Tanworth in Arden in Warwickshire,

:11:37. > :11:38.they celebrated their local with a specially commissioned picture,

:11:39. > :11:48.But by the turn of this century the Bell's heyday seemed ovdr.

:11:49. > :11:55.It had become a pub that was not being used very much. It had sticky

:11:56. > :11:57.carpets, red wallpaper. It was in a poor state.

:11:58. > :11:59.Today the Bell Inn is successful `gain.

:12:00. > :12:03.But it's had to diversify in order to thrive.

:12:04. > :12:08.Walk past the right`hand side of the bar, step in here and you whll find

:12:09. > :12:14.there is also a post office and a small shop. And if you come in here,

:12:15. > :12:15.around the back of the pub, you will also find there is a thriving

:12:16. > :12:18.hairdressing business. The Bell has benefited from Pub Is

:12:19. > :12:21.The Hub, an organisation set up by Prince Charles which gives licensees

:12:22. > :12:34.advice on how to adapt and provide In the last 13 years, we have

:12:35. > :12:37.broadly helped around 500 ptbs to complete projects of this txpe. In

:12:38. > :12:43.the last year alone, we havd done 90. We are going great guns at the

:12:44. > :12:45.moment. People are coming up with some great ideas as well.

:12:46. > :12:47.Not long ago, this pub in Wdllington in Shropshire was closed.

:12:48. > :12:52.But now they're diversifying here too.

:12:53. > :12:55.The original brewery was just over the road because the local water is

:12:56. > :12:58.quite nice. New landlord Dave Goldingay is

:12:59. > :13:00.building a small brewery He'll offer tours to customdrs

:13:01. > :13:08.and hold beer festivals. Hopefully, the brewery will add an

:13:09. > :13:13.attraction to customers in the pub and vice versa, so the pub will act

:13:14. > :13:14.as a good customer for the brewery. But even though he has added this

:13:15. > :13:17.extra attraction, Dave also warns pubs can go too far in their

:13:18. > :13:26.attempts to bring in MORE btsiness. It just gets to be a bit too much.

:13:27. > :13:28.Our philosophy is basically, is it a place to come, enjoy a good beer,

:13:29. > :13:32.talked people for a change? Tomorrow we'll look

:13:33. > :13:35.at problems faced by surburban pubs which are closing at a much faster

:13:36. > :13:55.rate than those in the countryside. Time for the sport.

:13:56. > :14:01.Just give me a chance, that was the message from West Brom at Albion's

:14:02. > :14:06.new coach today. He has spoken for the first time since being

:14:07. > :14:13.appointed. Some fans said they were going to return their season tickets

:14:14. > :14:18.in protest. This report contains flash photography.

:14:19. > :14:22.This is becoming a familiar sight. Alan Irvin is the fifth head coach

:14:23. > :14:26.at West Bromwich Albion in the last five years. He was not the

:14:27. > :14:30.high`profile appointment supporters were looking for. He is unddr no

:14:31. > :14:33.illusions that they will nedd to be won over. I understand that I would

:14:34. > :14:39.not have been a name on everybody's lips. I have got this job now, I

:14:40. > :14:43.know that the Albion fans are incredibly passionate. But H think

:14:44. > :14:47.they will find that I'm incredibly passionate as well and hopefully

:14:48. > :14:52.together we can build the tdam to get success. It was widely believed

:14:53. > :14:54.that Tim Sherwood was Albion's first choice but a deal could not be

:14:55. > :14:58.agreed. There is no getting away thd from

:14:59. > :15:03.the fact that this is not a universally popular appointlent

:15:04. > :15:07.What fans want to know is what is the club 's ambition? What we have

:15:08. > :15:10.been asked to provide is th`t head coach and the qualities of ` head

:15:11. > :15:15.coach. We have not been askdd to provide a personality. We w`nt

:15:16. > :15:20.someone who can go out and coach the players to improve performance. Some

:15:21. > :15:26.fans have even said they will give up their season tickets in protest.

:15:27. > :15:29.It was a shock when it came out but if we signed the right playdrs, you

:15:30. > :15:36.will be a good player. It is as simple as that. I did the hdat he

:15:37. > :15:41.has `` I don't think he has had much premiership experience. It `ll comes

:15:42. > :15:48.down to results. If we get good results, people will enjoy ht. If we

:15:49. > :15:54.don't, people will not be h`ppy The pitch certainly looks ready for the

:15:55. > :15:58.new season. Only when they kick off against Sunderland were we know

:15:59. > :16:04.whether the new coach is as well. All the best to him. Also today

:16:05. > :16:07.fixtures came out, interesthng once for the first day.

:16:08. > :16:14.Yes, any Premier league Stoke city will kick off against Aston Villa.

:16:15. > :16:21.West Bromwich album will be at home against Sunderland.

:16:22. > :16:29.Some dramatic developers ag`in at Hereford. Yes, another day, another

:16:30. > :16:34.story. More confusion. The car's owner, Tommy Agombar, appears to

:16:35. > :16:42.have resigned. It seems to have been terminated. If you are in ddsperate

:16:43. > :16:47.need from a break for this `` a break from this football, this may

:16:48. > :16:52.be the alternative you're looking for. The estate grounds will be

:16:53. > :16:56.playing to the Valley of thd Midlands.

:16:57. > :17:01.Business as usual this mornhng for Jason Douglas. He arrived at

:17:02. > :17:07.Merivale Hall as an apprenthce as now he is the head gamekeepdr. When

:17:08. > :17:10.he is not loading acts of pheasant food, his passion is driving fast

:17:11. > :17:15.cars will stop this weekend, he doesn't have to drive far to indulge

:17:16. > :17:19.his hobby. The rally of the Midlands is taking place right here on his

:17:20. > :17:23.doorstep, in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside. You must

:17:24. > :17:27.this estate like the back of your hand. I can probably do it

:17:28. > :17:31.blindfolded. At fast speeds, it is a different ball game. The twhsts and

:17:32. > :17:37.turns, when you go more than 20 miles an hour, it will get xou. This

:17:38. > :17:43.has been home to the Dugdald family for more than 200 years and home to

:17:44. > :17:48.the Valley of the Midlands since 2003. Ensuring the safety of

:17:49. > :17:52.spectators is vital. It is xou miniature DC get the best so

:17:53. > :17:55.bombarded point but there are plenty of warning signs and marshals to

:17:56. > :18:00.keep the viewing public out of danger. Only two weeks ago hn

:18:01. > :18:06.Scotland, a spectator filmed this near miss when a car span ott of

:18:07. > :18:10.control. Soon after, a traghc crash left three people dead. The hairpin

:18:11. > :18:15.around here will be an interesting part. Peter Young is the Valley do

:18:16. > :18:19.rector. He knows every inch of this stage, 1.3 miles of twists `nd

:18:20. > :18:26.turns, designed to test the skill and nerve of 60 drivers. We are

:18:27. > :18:31.fortunate. The privately owned roads that run through the estate Bailey

:18:32. > :18:37.do emulated what rallying w`s all about in the years gone by. Safety

:18:38. > :18:41.is paramount to people who `re organising motorsport events. Jason

:18:42. > :18:46.Douglas, the gamekeeper turned rally driver became hooked on the sport

:18:47. > :18:49.only four years ago. At 10:30am on Saturday, he is guaranteed to break

:18:50. > :18:56.the 20 mark an hour speed lhmit that normally applies on the est`te.

:18:57. > :19:08.Finally, good luck to Ian Bdll who is all set to tie his 100th test

:19:09. > :19:11.match against Sri Lanka on Friday. There is so much we know about Dawn

:19:12. > :19:17.French. Her partnership with Jennifer Saunders and her

:19:18. > :19:25.appearances in the big debut. You may perhaps the struck more by her

:19:26. > :19:28.searing honesty. She is performing solo from this evening, mixhng

:19:29. > :19:42.poignant moment with a typical humour. I am Dawn French. The

:19:43. > :19:46.dwarfish, fuchsia Jockey chhld. It sounds painful but obviouslx

:19:47. > :19:50.hilarious. I hope it is a mhxture of both. I decided to be very open and

:19:51. > :19:56.honest, more than I ever have done before. I introduced the audience to

:19:57. > :20:01.all of the map people in my family. And I basically explored it is like

:20:02. > :20:05.to be a fully functioning fdmale human, which I have endeavotred to

:20:06. > :20:11.be for 56 years now. I'm not sure I have succeeded but I do try. On the

:20:12. > :20:15.other hand, beside the hilarity there are deeply painful emotional

:20:16. > :20:22.moments was at how difficult is it to talk about those? I cannot talk

:20:23. > :20:28.about my family that talking about my dad, who committed suicide when I

:20:29. > :20:32.was 19. But I have happy melories of my dad and I also understandable

:20:33. > :20:38.about mental health issues `s an adult, so it would be wrong not to

:20:39. > :20:41.include him. That is a tricky part of the evening and it is difficult

:20:42. > :20:46.for me to get through it but there is lots of laughter. Our falily

:20:47. > :20:57.coped with difficult moments with humour. Do you talk about Rhck mail?

:20:58. > :21:00.There is some footage. He w`s part of a tournament that we had. He is

:21:01. > :21:08.there with me on stage everx night, which I find comforting. A terrible

:21:09. > :21:13.shock, just 56. Yes, exactlx the same as me. It is too soon `nd we

:21:14. > :21:18.had been robbed of a very shiny person. I hope you took abott one of

:21:19. > :21:24.my all`time favourites, the vicar of deeply.

:21:25. > :21:41.This is perfect, almost perfect I sort of feel that everyond has

:21:42. > :21:46.seen my career. That is the bit they know about me. I want a doc about

:21:47. > :21:49.things that are more person`l. I refer to things in my more

:21:50. > :21:59.professional life. Is it lonely out there? It is odd to not havd
