:00:00. > :00:00.Hello, and welcome to Midlands Today.

:00:00. > :00:08.It's celebration time, as the Commonwealth Games delivers

:00:09. > :00:16.16 medals, and counting, for Midlands competitors.

:00:17. > :00:26.After two Commonwealth gold medals, a fantastic Black Country homecoming

:00:27. > :00:29.triathlete Jodie Stimpson. I am so pleased for you. Thank you. Goodbye.

:00:30. > :00:37.But, away from the Games, a sporting blow for the region.

:00:38. > :00:53.You have just said nobody wants a swimming pool. I did not say that! I

:00:54. > :00:56.see it as a demise in competitive swimming.

:00:57. > :00:58.A hi`tech plan to help tackle major fires.

:00:59. > :01:00.40,000 pack into a Birmingham park to celebrate

:01:01. > :01:05.And, last week, we had soaring temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

:01:06. > :01:16.I'll have all the details in the forecast later.

:01:17. > :01:22.Double Commonwealth champion Jodie Stimpson has returned home to

:01:23. > :01:25.a hero's welcome from friends and family in the Black Country.

:01:26. > :01:28.Triathlete Jodie won England's first gold medal of the Games in Glasgow

:01:29. > :01:32.on Thursday, and then won her second on Saturday in the mixed team relay.

:01:33. > :01:34.After celebrating her two golds, it was back home to Oldbury

:01:35. > :01:37.in Sandwell where her family have draped a huge medal on the front

:01:38. > :01:41.In a moment, we'll be chatting live to Jodie,

:01:42. > :01:55.And still the congratulations keep on coming.

:01:56. > :02:00.Jodie's 91`year`old neighbour, thrilled about her achievements

:02:01. > :02:09.COMMENTATOR: The 2014 Commonwealth Games...

:02:10. > :02:11.Jodie had to swim 1,500 metres, cycle 40km and, lastly,

:02:12. > :02:14.At the point where she breaks away from her rivals,

:02:15. > :02:24.You can send people when you are running. You don't know how many

:02:25. > :02:29.people are around you, but I could sense there were a few that and on

:02:30. > :02:31.the last lap I was in my head space, I am going to get rid of some of

:02:32. > :02:33.these competitors. For her parents,

:02:34. > :02:43.it was a glorious moment. My heart was pounding that much. I

:02:44. > :02:50.thought, your heart must be pounding doubly. I just wanted to get to the

:02:51. > :02:54.end. It was great. With 1.5 kilometres to go, that is when it

:02:55. > :02:57.started to build up inside me as well. The emotions, everything else.

:02:58. > :03:00.And they were made proud again when their daughter and her team mates

:03:01. > :03:07.COMMENTATOR: England when the Commonwealth Games mixed team relay.

:03:08. > :03:10.Since winning her first triathlon at nine years old,

:03:11. > :03:13.But she suffered huge disappointment in 2012 when she wasn't selected

:03:14. > :03:24.I think it definitely drove me, and gave me a kick up the backside for

:03:25. > :03:29.what I needed to do. So, I think it was more so not

:03:30. > :03:30.wanting to miss another Championship that drove me more.

:03:31. > :03:32.The determination's paid off, and plans are being made for

:03:33. > :03:43.It is absolutely really incredible what she has achieved, and we have

:03:44. > :03:50.two, as a borough, she is one of our own, show how much we appreciate it.

:03:51. > :03:54.I will probably net get `` get the opportunity again, I am training,

:03:55. > :03:59.what should I do? The first half should feel easy, with the next

:04:00. > :04:07.half, push on and keep going. If you're finding it hard on the first

:04:08. > :04:11.half, do you have gone too fast. The feeling at the end is so worth it.

:04:12. > :04:14.And I'm delighted to say Jodie joins us now.

:04:15. > :04:26.Can you describe what the last five days have been like?

:04:27. > :04:33.Oh, amazing. When I crossed the line, I could see all my family and

:04:34. > :04:37.friends in the grandstand. That was like a roller`coaster of emotions

:04:38. > :04:42.which all came at once. Then, I got back home, it was the same again.

:04:43. > :04:47.Anyone who could not make it up to Glasgow were outside my house. I had

:04:48. > :04:52.no idea. What about the family and friends in the stadium, could you

:04:53. > :04:57.see them? Yes, when I was able to look into

:04:58. > :05:03.the grandstand, as my brother, my mum, my dad, my sister. It was

:05:04. > :05:08.fantastic to share what a big achievement it was. Were they going

:05:09. > :05:13.bonkers. Totally, they were jumping up and down. I have watched the race

:05:14. > :05:18.back. I can see everybody running behind me trying to get me trying to

:05:19. > :05:23.get near then you come home and see everyone else, it must have been

:05:24. > :05:28.terrific for you today. As I say, it has been nonstop,

:05:29. > :05:32.fantastic. I have so much support back home. I wouldn't have been able

:05:33. > :05:37.to achieve without them. It is as much mind as their medal.

:05:38. > :05:41.You will become a role model for people in Sandwell, that is a

:05:42. > :05:47.responsibility. If I can get one or two people to

:05:48. > :05:52.have a go at sport, the triathlon, I see that as a success. I hope other

:05:53. > :05:57.people will have a go now. We have a photograph of you as a

:05:58. > :06:01.youngster, performing, starting on the way. Could you ever have

:06:02. > :06:07.imagined then that you would achieve so much now?

:06:08. > :06:12.Definitely not. I have always loved sport. I have always wanted to

:06:13. > :06:17.compete at a high level. It has always been a dream. You never know

:06:18. > :06:23.if dreams are going to come true and mine came true at the weekend.

:06:24. > :06:27.We have two ask what happens next. I suppose Rio is rearing up in your

:06:28. > :06:31.mind? Definitely. When I missed out on

:06:32. > :06:37.London, that was the number one thing, I didn't want to miss another

:06:38. > :06:42.Championship, it hurt too much. Definitely, Rio is on the cards, two

:06:43. > :06:44.years will go so quickly. You will have even more people

:06:45. > :06:49.following you now. Congratulations. The only 50m swimming pool

:06:50. > :06:51.in the West Midlands is to close, even though 11,000 people signed

:06:52. > :06:54.a petition to keep Coventry City Council plans to close

:06:55. > :06:57.the pool and replace it with a new ?37m leisure centre elsewhere

:06:58. > :07:00.in the city. More details now from

:07:01. > :07:12.Sian Grzeszczyk. You said nobody wants a 50 metre

:07:13. > :07:22.swimming pool. I did not. These campaigners vented

:07:23. > :07:25.their frustration on the councillor who made the announcement today,

:07:26. > :07:35.after hearing they are set to lose The anger is frustration.

:07:36. > :07:38.Frustration at the council aren't listening to what we are saying. A

:07:39. > :07:41.50 metre pool can be profitable. Despite one of the biggest petitions

:07:42. > :07:44.in the history of the council, the politician responsible insisted they

:07:45. > :07:46.had listened to people's concerns. The cost

:07:47. > :07:48.of maintaining this building works And to refurbish the whole

:07:49. > :07:52.of this building would cost over We have not ignored the petitioners

:07:53. > :07:59.at all. It's been enjoyed by thousands

:08:00. > :08:01.of Coventrians for decades, and those swimming there today were

:08:02. > :08:04.sad to hear the news. I grew up in the city and thought

:08:05. > :08:10.it was available for all. The majority of people come here

:08:11. > :08:23.do not realise the facilities will

:08:24. > :08:26.not provide the same. This is where the council wants to

:08:27. > :08:29.build a brand new ?37 million leisure centre, with water park,

:08:30. > :08:32.and a new 25 metre swimming pool, Part of the sports centre is

:08:33. > :08:38.listed and so councillors Instead, they'll have to

:08:39. > :08:48.find another use for it. There are two cities

:08:49. > :08:54.which won't have a 50 metre pool, In the meantime, there are plans

:08:55. > :09:00.for a new 50 metre pool at Birmingham University which is

:09:01. > :09:03.due to open in 2016, a year before We'll have more Commonwealth Games

:09:04. > :09:16.news later. School's out for summer, unless,

:09:17. > :09:33.that is, you're I will be finding out why many of

:09:34. > :09:35.our parks but this one in Dudley are thriving, despite having their

:09:36. > :09:38.funding cut dramatically by local councils.

:09:39. > :09:42.A 19`year`old man is being by questioned by police in Warwickshire

:09:43. > :09:48.about the murder of a man who was shot dead near Rugby on Friday.

:09:49. > :09:50.23`year`old Jordan Banton died from a gunshot wound to the head.

:09:51. > :09:56.Police have located the vehicle they believe was used

:09:57. > :09:58.by the killer, a Vauxhall insignia, similar to this one.

:09:59. > :10:01.Two other men have been released on police bail, and a woman has

:10:02. > :10:04.been released without charge in connection with the killing.

:10:05. > :10:06.Police in Birmingham have released CCTV pictures of the moment

:10:07. > :10:10.an officer was flung to the ground, as he tried to stop a getaway van.

:10:11. > :10:12.PC Gareth Lowe spotted the vehicle in Upper Balsall Heath Road.

:10:13. > :10:15.But, when he grabbed the passenger door handle, the van sped off.

:10:16. > :10:17.The officer was treated in hospital for minor injuries,

:10:18. > :10:25.A burglar caught breaking into a house that had been fitted

:10:26. > :10:27.with secret recording equipment by police has been jailed

:10:28. > :10:31.Andres Balog didn't realise the cameras had been placed

:10:32. > :10:35.in the Park Village property by Wolverhampton detectives.

:10:36. > :10:38.It's one of many capture houses in the area designed to catch

:10:39. > :10:46.A Birmingham MP has called on the city council to fly

:10:47. > :10:49.the Palestinian flag at the Council House as a mark of respect

:10:50. > :10:52.Two other local councils, in Preston and Bradford, have

:10:53. > :10:55.already raised the flag, despite criticism, but Birmingham say they

:10:56. > :11:10.Khalid Mahmood says it's not a political statement.

:11:11. > :11:15.We have a counsellor dying and we pay respect to that. We have

:11:16. > :11:19.hundreds of young people dying in Gaza and we can't pay respect to

:11:20. > :11:21.them? This is the humanity Birmingham needs to show.

:11:22. > :11:24.Labour have officially launched their campaign for the West Midlands

:11:25. > :11:26.Police and Crime Commissioner by`election, at an event today

:11:27. > :11:29.The party's candidate, David Jamieson, is a former MP

:11:30. > :11:32.The by`election comes following the death of Bob Jones

:11:33. > :11:34.Labour, who oppose the role in principle,

:11:35. > :11:50.In this by`election, it is not about the future of the Police

:11:51. > :11:58.Commissioner's job. That job exists, it has to be done well, there is a

:11:59. > :11:59.budget of 500 `` half ?1 billion to make communities safer, and I want

:12:00. > :12:01.to make sure that is done well. West Midlands Fire Service want to

:12:02. > :12:04.trial technology that would allow 999 callers to send them video

:12:05. > :12:08.from the scene of a fire. Around 65%

:12:09. > :12:10.of emergency calls are now made by mobile phone, and many of those are

:12:11. > :12:13.smart phones with built`in cameras. Our science correspondent

:12:14. > :12:16.David Gregory`Kumar is here now. What's the thinking

:12:17. > :12:20.behind this then, David? A year ago, saw the biggest fire

:12:21. > :12:23.in the Midlands at a Smethwick All

:12:24. > :12:25.the emergency services were praised But, to be honest,

:12:26. > :12:29.the first 999 calls didn't really So, could live video sent

:12:30. > :12:33.from the smart phones of people at the scene been more useful

:12:34. > :12:36.when deciding the level of that The Fire Service have a 90`second

:12:37. > :12:51.window between answering the call, and getting the right resources

:12:52. > :12:55.on their way to the right place. So, listening to this real 999 call,

:12:56. > :13:09.just how bad is this fire? That was the first 999 call

:13:10. > :13:13.of hundreds made about this fire. 100,000 tonnes of blazing plastic

:13:14. > :13:18.in Smethwick just over a year ago. The emergency services were praised

:13:19. > :13:23.for their response to this fire. But, if they'd had access to live

:13:24. > :13:26.video from the scene as well as the 999 call itself,

:13:27. > :13:29.they might make very different decisions about the scale of

:13:30. > :13:33.the response from the very start. More often than not,

:13:34. > :13:36.we are going in blind. That is what every emergency service

:13:37. > :13:40.works on, But, at this briefing, we're seeing

:13:41. > :13:45.a new way to supercharge Just click on a link sent out

:13:46. > :13:49.by the Fire Service, and your phone starts streaming live

:13:50. > :14:00.footage to the emergency services. Something like this,

:14:01. > :14:03.we can see straight away this is a serious incident escalating rapidly,

:14:04. > :14:05.and impact on the communities. We need to get the right

:14:06. > :14:07.resources as quickly as possible. Technically, you could get

:14:08. > :14:16.a system like this up and running And what happens here than people

:14:17. > :14:24.who work in the control room see the kind of thing usually only fire

:14:25. > :14:30.fighters see. David, you mentioned potential

:14:31. > :14:32.problems with this idea, David. There are all sorts of issues

:14:33. > :14:36.this technology throws up. This is the control room at West

:14:37. > :14:39.Midlands Fire Service in Birmingham. These are the people who deal with

:14:40. > :14:42.emergency calls, and who could be What would be the impact

:14:43. > :14:47.on these operators of seeing video Confronting them with upsetting

:14:48. > :14:51.images usually only seen And then there's

:14:52. > :14:57.the wider question of privacy. How comfortable are you with

:14:58. > :15:00.the idea that any mobile phone could actually be sending back live

:15:01. > :15:03.video to the emergency services. That's why, ahead of any trial,

:15:04. > :15:07.the Fire Service would If you go to my blog, you can

:15:08. > :15:11.read more about this technology. And also how you can

:15:12. > :15:19.contribute to this debate. Scores of young people,

:15:20. > :15:22.who could be the business leaders of the future, have been attending

:15:23. > :15:24.the first of a series The camps are designed to teach some

:15:25. > :15:30.of the skills needed to run They're being aimed a 11 to

:15:31. > :15:33.16`year`olds, and our business correspondent, Peter Plisner,

:15:34. > :15:42.has been along to find out more. You can use the marshmallows to

:15:43. > :15:45.connect the sticks together. The Spaghetti Tower,

:15:46. > :15:47.a team building exercise on the first day of a week`long course

:15:48. > :15:50.for budding young entrepreneurs. Although school's out

:15:51. > :15:52.for the summer, these young people have opted to come back to learn

:15:53. > :16:03.more about business and enterprise. I think it has been great fun. And

:16:04. > :16:07.it is helping develop our cooperation skills.

:16:08. > :16:12.If I had my own business, I would probably want to go into business to

:16:13. > :16:13.stop robbers. and those in charge say it's

:16:14. > :16:23.all about having a plan B. It is not an alternative to college

:16:24. > :16:27.or university. It is giving them the skills to think about what they

:16:28. > :16:28.could do in the future. They can become financially independent and

:16:29. > :16:31.not rely on the bank of mum and dad. And to further whet their appetite

:16:32. > :16:42.for business, local businesses Passion drives everything, and a lot

:16:43. > :16:44.of hard work and commitment to ever you are trying to do.

:16:45. > :16:47.According to the latest figures, the number of 18 to 24`year`olds

:16:48. > :16:49.starting up businesses or going freelance rose by 97% last year.

:16:50. > :16:51.With 26% of those surveyed saying they'd done

:16:52. > :16:55.Interestingly, some 78% said they were looking to expand their

:16:56. > :17:05.And here's one young man who's constantly expanding his business.

:17:06. > :17:12.Tyge Ible is 15, and bakes cakes from his mum?s kitchen.

:17:13. > :17:16.It is good, you are in charge and you don't take orders from other

:17:17. > :17:17.people. You know what you want to do.

:17:18. > :17:20.And that's what will hopefully drive other young people to do

:17:21. > :17:27.the same and become the entrepreneurs of the future.

:17:28. > :17:34.A rousing welcome home to the Black Country for Jodie Stimpson,

:17:35. > :17:36.a double gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games.

:17:37. > :17:38.Your detailed weather forecast to come shortly from Rebecca.

:17:39. > :17:43.Thousands pack a park in Birmingham to celebrate Eid and the end

:17:44. > :17:53.The Midlands has already won 16 medals at the Commonwealth Games

:17:54. > :17:56.in Glasgow, and there are high hopes of another one tonight.

:17:57. > :17:59.The Uttoxeter swimmer Adam Peaty won gold in the pool on Saturday.

:18:00. > :18:02.This evening, he'll try to add a second medal to his collection.

:18:03. > :18:09.Performing with the confidence of a man who's having the time

:18:10. > :18:12.19`year`old Adam Peaty, from Uttoxeter, swam

:18:13. > :18:15.an outstanding semi`final in the 50 metre breaststroke, to qualify

:18:16. > :18:29.It is getting very competitive now. We all know each other. It is

:18:30. > :18:32.getting very competitive but it is good at the same time, pushing you

:18:33. > :18:33.forward. It is great. Peaty had already won a gold

:18:34. > :18:36.in the 100 metres on Saturday night, Back home in Staffordshire today,

:18:37. > :18:53.they were still reflecting on his So excited. So tearful. And the

:18:54. > :18:59.atmosphere made it really. And when I knew he had won the gold medal, it

:19:00. > :19:01.was the proudest moment of my life, and I will never ever forget it.

:19:02. > :19:03.England are one of the favourites for gymnastics

:19:04. > :19:05.gold, and Wolverhampton's Kristian Thomas has long been the backbone

:19:06. > :19:08.He won a bronze in Melbourne eight years ago,

:19:09. > :19:12.and England are leading the way on day one in the competition.

:19:13. > :19:13.Two Birmingham athletes have given themselves a chance

:19:14. > :19:18.Hannah England qualified for tomorrow's final of

:19:19. > :19:22.the 1500 metres, while Tom Parsons is through to the high jump final on

:19:23. > :19:30.Wednesday after clearing two metres twenty at his second attempt.

:19:31. > :19:32.99 parks across the West Midlands were today awarded Green Flag

:19:33. > :19:34.status, a Government`backed initiative which highlights the very

:19:35. > :19:39.There are around 500 parks in our region, with most of them attracting

:19:40. > :19:43.So there's clearly an appetite for park life.

:19:44. > :19:45.But local councils are having to find innovative ways to maintain

:19:46. > :19:59.Bob Hockenhull is in Dudley at a park which seems to be thriving.

:20:00. > :20:11.Basically, through people power. Lots of people in the local area

:20:12. > :20:15.decided not many people were using this park, and it was looking a bit

:20:16. > :20:20.scruffy. They decided to do something by cleaning it up, and

:20:21. > :20:22.have become very adept at obtaining grants which have been used to pay

:20:23. > :20:24.for much`needed facilities. Buffery Park in

:20:25. > :20:30.Dudley, vibrant once again. A few years ago, it was rundown

:20:31. > :20:35.and underused. In disrepair, no one using the park,

:20:36. > :20:38.no play area, no water games, The children, people here,

:20:39. > :20:41.it didn't make them happy. They have worked to improve

:20:42. > :20:47.the public space. Lobbying for grants to bring tennis

:20:48. > :20:49.courts back into use The community

:20:50. > :21:00.are really positive about the park. We have had more people on the

:21:01. > :21:04.park than we have for many years. 365 parks across the wider

:21:05. > :21:07.West Midlands now have friends The highest number outside London,

:21:08. > :21:11.and it looks It is warned councils may not be

:21:12. > :21:25.able to help fund parks at all. If the rate

:21:26. > :21:29.of budget cuts continues. There is

:21:30. > :21:31.a possibility that will happen. But I will fight

:21:32. > :21:34.so this does not happen because parks are unbelievably

:21:35. > :21:36.valuable to the community. There is a feeling across the

:21:37. > :21:39.West Midlands that our parks are there for everybody
