:00:00. > :00:00.One The headlines tonight:

:00:00. > :00:00.Making our lives a misery: calls for Birmingham Airport to drop testing

:00:07. > :00:09.for a new flightpath. Airport officials have promised to

:00:10. > :00:22.meet local residents next week. Also We cannot afford to let this trial

:00:23. > :00:25.dragged on when it is not working properly.

:00:26. > :00:26.tonight, More gold in the Commonwealth Games:

:00:27. > :00:29.this time for Wolverhampton's Kristian Thomas in the Team

:00:30. > :00:37.Gymnastics. How this big cat from Dudley Zoo

:00:38. > :00:55.The last few months we have been training so hard.

:00:56. > :00:56.extinction. And it's been the perfect weather

:00:57. > :00:59.for gathering in the harvest recently ` but something a little

:01:00. > :01:12.wetter in on the cards later this week. All the details coming up.

:01:13. > :01:15.Good evening. Families living near Birmingham Airport say the extra

:01:16. > :01:19.noise being generated by changes to flight paths is making their lives a

:01:20. > :01:26.misery. The Airport's running a six month trial of different routes

:01:27. > :01:29.following the opening of its extended runway. Now one MP's

:01:30. > :01:34.calling on the Transport Secretary to order the trials to be cancelled.

:01:35. > :01:40.Amy Cole reports. Discussing the problems. And that is

:01:41. > :01:57.a bone of contention since the airport has been allowing planes to

:01:58. > :02:05.take off and land on similar flight paths. Birmingham Airport's runway

:02:06. > :02:10.extension opened in May, bringing in new destinations and it seems a

:02:11. > :02:13.barrage of complaints. The airport has been trialling two

:02:14. > :02:17.options for new flight routes to make the most of the runway

:02:18. > :02:20.extension. The first has planes coming in AND out on the same path.

:02:21. > :02:25.And that means more noise for people living in places such as Hampton in

:02:26. > :02:29.Arden, Balsall Common and nearby villages. The second option involves

:02:30. > :02:33.aircraft making a turn just past Hampton and flying over open

:02:34. > :02:46.countryside. For those living near the airport, neither option is

:02:47. > :02:52.ideal. The airport insists it will

:02:53. > :03:05.I'm only sleeping for five hours a night. Sleep is constantly being

:03:06. > :03:07.interrupted. I don't accept being given the departure of aircraft as

:03:08. > :03:09.well. trial once it's over. But the

:03:10. > :03:12.residents want it to be scrapped and have the backing of their local MP.

:03:13. > :03:22.Residents say they're looking Three months of trials that haven't

:03:23. > :03:26.been going very well. The airport is not able to fly these roots

:03:27. > :03:30.accurately. We cannot afford to let this trial dry on when it is not

:03:31. > :03:34.working properly. I would like to see urgent intervention by the

:03:35. > :04:05.Secretary of State to try to improve the situation. `` dragged on.

:04:06. > :04:12.The airport as they did have a consultation when they were planning

:04:13. > :04:15.the roots. The trials produce data that will be collected by the

:04:16. > :04:19.airport and sent to the civil aviation authority you have the

:04:20. > :04:22.final approval on which fly three comes in. I have been trying to

:04:23. > :04:30.speak to the civil aviation authority to find out is, when they

:04:31. > :04:32.do that approval, the views of local residents are taken into account.

:04:33. > :04:38.They say that all relevant information relating to community

:04:39. > :04:46.feedback is taken into account. Hopefully, residents will have a say

:04:47. > :04:50.on what they think about this. Caroline Spellman has called for the

:04:51. > :04:53.Transport Secretary to intervene. I have spoken to the Department for

:04:54. > :04:58.Transport today who say that ultimately, they believe `` Bailey's

:04:59. > :05:03.the decision to the civil aviation authority. They say that Caroline

:05:04. > :05:08.Spellman did speak to the Transport Secretary earlier in the year, but

:05:09. > :05:11.they said that it is the responsibility of the civil aviation

:05:12. > :05:13.authority to make the decision. Ultimately, it does seem to rest

:05:14. > :05:16.with them. Thank you. Good to have you with us here

:05:17. > :05:18.on Midlands Today. Coming up later in the programme,

:05:19. > :05:28.blocked sewers on the increase. People are putting grease and oil

:05:29. > :05:31.down the drains which causes problems.

:05:32. > :05:33.We've another gold medal to celebrate at the Commonwealth Games.

:05:34. > :05:36.Kristian Thomas from Wolverhampton was part of the England Gymnastics

:05:37. > :05:39.squad which won the men's team event this afternoon.

:05:40. > :05:41.Dan Pallett is at the Games in Glasgow for us tonight.

:05:42. > :05:51.That makes 18 medals in total ` and ten of them gold.

:05:52. > :05:54.Well, there's no such thing as a banker in sport.

:05:55. > :05:57.But if anyone was going to win gold at these Games it was the

:05:58. > :05:59.England Gymnastics team including Kristian Thomas.

:06:00. > :06:02.They were the bronze medallists at London 2012 competing as

:06:03. > :06:05.Great Britain and only lost Daniel Keatings to the Scottish team

:06:06. > :06:11.And they duly delivered winning the gold medal

:06:12. > :06:15.But although they were favourites there's still pressure when you've

:06:16. > :06:35.There's always a lot of pressure on us. It's a high`pressure apparat is.

:06:36. > :06:38.The last few months we have been training so hard.

:06:39. > :06:41.Elsewhere today it's been a case of near misses.

:06:42. > :06:45.Birmingham's Omar Tafail just missed out on a bronze medal in the 57kg

:06:46. > :06:52.He lost to Craig Pilling of Wales but at the aged of just 19 he

:06:53. > :06:55.certainly showed he could be a medal contender in the future.

:06:56. > :06:58.Chinu Chinu from Oldbury is due to fight for a bronze

:06:59. > :07:06.Both the Gymnastics and the wrestling have taken place just

:07:07. > :07:11.across the river from here but just 25 minutes south of Glasgow we've

:07:12. > :07:15.had the mountainbiking where Beth Crumpton of Redditch was 9th in the

:07:16. > :07:23.women's race ` and Malvern's Liam Killieen was sixth.

:07:24. > :07:30.Who should we be looking out for now? Kristian Thomas will go again

:07:31. > :07:36.in the Nvidia `` individual apparat is. He is very good. Plenty of

:07:37. > :07:41.athletics to look forward to tomorrow. Most people just have to

:07:42. > :07:53.worry about themselves. The students Most competitors at the

:07:54. > :07:55.Commonwealth Games just have to But the Birmingham athlete Luke Gunn

:07:56. > :07:58.will be much busier. He'll also be watching out

:07:59. > :08:10.for his wife and `` the steeplechase is one of the

:08:11. > :08:14.best competitions in the Commonwealth. We have three of the

:08:15. > :08:20.best athletes in the world in it. It would be hard for anyone to beat

:08:21. > :08:24.them. I am going to aim to get in that top five if I can. If anyone

:08:25. > :08:29.falls I will be the first one to snap at their heels.

:08:30. > :08:32.His wife is Hannah England who runs in the 1500 metre final tonight.

:08:33. > :08:34.They met as students at the University of Birmingham

:08:35. > :08:38.Luke now manages the university's sports scholarship programme and 15

:08:39. > :08:48.of their current and former students are competing in Glasgow as well.

:08:49. > :08:54.We are trying to catch up with the likes of Loughborough University and

:08:55. > :08:57.bridge that gap to becoming the second best university, sports

:08:58. > :09:02.rights. The university takes it very seriously and is in `` investing

:09:03. > :09:03.heavily in a new sports centre. Scholarships are just part of the

:09:04. > :09:04.package. He'll be thrilled if Hannah or one

:09:05. > :09:07.of his scholars wins a medal but Luke would desperately love to stand

:09:08. > :09:25.on the podium himself as well. That wrestler I spoke about earlier

:09:26. > :09:31.had made a great start and has a bronze medal at his feet. You can

:09:32. > :09:39.see that on the BBC sport website. Adam Peter is back tonight. He is in

:09:40. > :09:44.the relay. The good news just keeps coming from Glasgow.

:09:45. > :09:47.The Worcestershire and England batsman Moeen Ali has been warned

:09:48. > :09:49.not to wear wristbands showing support for Gaza

:09:50. > :09:54.The 27`year`old wore bands saying "Free Palestine" and "Save Gaza" on

:09:55. > :09:56.the second day of the match in Southampton.

:09:57. > :09:58.International Cricket Council rules state that players should not wear

:09:59. > :10:02.messages relating to "political, religious or racial activities

:10:03. > :10:08.The digger maker JCB has secured an order for more than a thousand

:10:09. > :10:13.The deal has been made with the hire firm, A`Plant,

:10:14. > :10:19.The machines will be built at JCB's factories in Staffordshire.

:10:20. > :10:22.Two more people have been arrested as part of the investigation

:10:23. > :10:24.into the murder of a 23`year`old man from Rugby.

:10:25. > :10:27.Jordan Banton was shot dead in the village of Newton

:10:28. > :10:33.A 28`year`old man and a 34`year`old man, both from Rugby,

:10:34. > :10:43.A 19`year`old man remains in custody in connection with the murder.

:10:44. > :10:47.Drivers could be charged to bring polluting older diesel vehicles

:10:48. > :10:52.The government's looking at introducing 'Low Emissions Zones'

:10:53. > :10:56.in our biggest cities which would target the dirtiest diesels.

:10:57. > :10:58.London's considering introducing a ?10 charge

:10:59. > :11:03.Sian Grzeszczyk is in Birmingham city centre for us now.

:11:04. > :11:16.Tell us more about what this could mean in Birmingham.

:11:17. > :11:23.There are normally hundreds of cars driving through in the evening.

:11:24. > :11:26.They're all releasing various levels of pollution into the atmosphere.

:11:27. > :11:32.The problem with older diesel cars is that they can it particles which

:11:33. > :11:36.cut `` can cause problems for people who suffer from asthma. The

:11:37. > :11:40.Department for Transport says there are more than 1 million diesel cars

:11:41. > :11:43.on our roads in the West Midlands. Birmingham is leading the way on

:11:44. > :11:46.looking in the West Midlands. Birmingham is leading the way on

:11:47. > :11:49.looking into investigating could mean these sorts of charges being

:11:50. > :11:54.brought in for those older diesel cars that are pumping out more

:11:55. > :11:59.pollution. How dangerous are these levels of pollution? The Department

:12:00. > :12:05.for the environment, food and rural affairs released a statement today

:12:06. > :12:08.saying that unless action is taken, Birmingham, London and Leeds would

:12:09. > :12:14.face dangerous levels of pollution from vehicle exhausts by 2030. The

:12:15. > :12:18.RAC says there has been a shift in opinion on the benefits of using

:12:19. > :12:24.diesel cars in recent times. Although diesel vehicles are more

:12:25. > :12:30.fuel efficient, petrol technology has been catching up. The gap has

:12:31. > :12:37.closed drastically. Diesel vehicles also omits particular matters. The

:12:38. > :12:41.medical opinion is generally that perhaps we have underestimated the

:12:42. > :12:49.damage done by the really small particles emitted by diesel

:12:50. > :12:53.vehicles. Earlier, I spoke to someone at a petrol station about

:12:54. > :13:01.what they thought of the idea of low emission zones will stop it's a good

:13:02. > :13:07.idea. The way the city is now with traffic, it does need to be slowed

:13:08. > :13:14.down. The pollution in the city is ridiculous. There are newer cars

:13:15. > :13:19.with lower emissions. I understand `` I'd understand it was the old

:13:20. > :13:27.cars. The newer cars are lower emissions anyway. Now the debate has

:13:28. > :13:30.started, the RAC also came out today and said they are introducing some

:13:31. > :13:35.kind of scrappage scheme for those older diesel cars.

:13:36. > :13:37.Well, we've had lots of comments from you on this,

:13:38. > :13:48.?Adding another motor charge will only penalise the low income

:13:49. > :13:51.Roger Fownes emailed us to say "The sooner diesel fumes pollution

:13:52. > :13:55.Stop the dirty diesels altogether including old buses and taxis."

:13:56. > :13:58.Rebecca Warner tweeted " Diesel car owners should not pay ?10 a day!

:13:59. > :14:02.This fuel is more efficient than petrol"

:14:03. > :14:07.And a final word from Dave Horrocks on Facebook ` "I already pay more

:14:08. > :14:17.I got an older car because I can't afford a new one ."

:14:18. > :14:24.nearby residents call for Birmingham Airport to drop testing

:14:25. > :14:29.Rebecca's standing by with your detailed weather forecast `

:14:30. > :14:47.Temperatures are falling here as melting ice becomes arts. Find out

:14:48. > :14:48.why later. And join me later to find out why things are blooming

:14:49. > :14:57.marvellous for the wedding season. Now Birmingham's right up there

:14:58. > :14:59.in the lead with the highest score by far,

:15:00. > :15:01.closely followed by Wolverhampton and then Stoke on Trent but it's not

:15:02. > :15:07.good news, in fact it stinks. It's a league table

:15:08. > :15:09.for blocked sewers ` particularly Severn Trent spend ?10

:15:10. > :15:15.million clearing up the mess. Sarah Falkland's been out with one

:15:16. > :15:25.of their teams today and she's We will bring that report to you a

:15:26. > :15:29.little later on. From the rather unattractive world

:15:30. > :15:32.of our sewer system to an animal that many would say is the most

:15:33. > :15:35.strikingly beautiful in the world. Charismatic yet extremely dangerous,

:15:36. > :15:37.the biggest of all cats but Now a tiger from Dudley Zoo is

:15:38. > :15:45.being used to highlight the very Three year old Daseep is the face

:15:46. > :16:02.of Global Tiger Day, They are one of the most beautiful

:16:03. > :16:08.creatures in the world but also one of the most endangered. I don't

:16:09. > :16:13.think people understand that. They don't realise the state it is then.

:16:14. > :16:17.They are down to the last couple of hundred. Hopefully, they will find a

:16:18. > :16:23.way to keep them alive. Future generations will then get to see

:16:24. > :16:28.them. This females a match in Tiger has been selected to be the face of

:16:29. > :16:32.this year's global Tiger day. She is stunning to look at. She is one of

:16:33. > :16:40.the most beautiful tigers I have seen. If you think all tigers are

:16:41. > :16:43.like, think again. She has own, including Catherine Hugh has adopted

:16:44. > :16:49.her and comes to visit two or three times a week. She is just beautiful.

:16:50. > :16:57.You only have to take one look in her ice and she has got your heart.

:16:58. > :17:08.She is a special Tiger. She is one in a million. She's just so lovely.

:17:09. > :17:17.He had an adoption for his birthday as well. Now there are only around

:17:18. > :17:23.3,500 tigers left in the wilds. The mansion tigers like this one number

:17:24. > :17:25.just a few hundred. Despite the risk of extinction, some of the risk of

:17:26. > :17:35.extinction, some believe in captivity. What do we do, nothing?

:17:36. > :17:39.Just let them die out? I don't think that's unacceptable thing. Dudley

:17:40. > :17:45.Su's last pair of tigers produced eight cups, increasing the worldwide

:17:46. > :17:56.cemetery in tiger population by 2%. `` Dudley zoo. . Let's get that

:17:57. > :18:07.report on blocked sewers. Sarah Falkland's been out with one

:18:08. > :18:10.of their teams today and she's We will bring that report to you a

:18:11. > :18:23.little later on. I have flushed wet wipes standard

:18:24. > :18:30.toilets. Gravy! It is no laughing matter when what is flushed and up

:18:31. > :18:33.clogging the sewers. Severn Trent is having to clear 55,000 blockages per

:18:34. > :18:38.year. Darren Edwards and his team have been called to a house in the

:18:39. > :18:42.Black Country. An hour later, and made noxious smells, a result. This

:18:43. > :18:49.is what has been causing the problem. A few make`up wipes, an old

:18:50. > :18:56.dish cloth. Typically, it is a whole lot worse than this. Fat balls or

:18:57. > :19:00.fat birds sometimes up to a metre long results from discarded cooking

:19:01. > :19:08.oil, which has congealed in five cold pipes. They're usually a great

:19:09. > :19:14.light colour. The same as a piece of Florida would buy from the shop.

:19:15. > :19:22.They're not very nice to handle. It gets all over your clothes. In

:19:23. > :19:27.Wolverhampton, sewer blockages have risen by 50% in the last year. We

:19:28. > :19:31.have noticed it is mainly due to sanitary products. Fat balls and

:19:32. > :19:48.greases which have been disposed down the sink our second. We've all

:19:49. > :19:55.done it, I think. Down the toilet and down the sink, yeah. Someone in

:19:56. > :20:00.Wolverhampton even tried to flush away a pair of slippers. There are

:20:01. > :20:03.91,000 kilometres of sewers here and the blockage boys are hoping that

:20:04. > :20:08.the public think twice about what they're putting down there.

:20:09. > :20:10.This weekend the icemen cometh to Birmingham `

:20:11. > :20:13.5,000 frozen statues placed in the city centre to mark the centenary

:22:12. > :22:11.a wonderful thing that is being done.

:22:12. > :22:22.A momument to the common man, no less a hero.

:22:23. > :22:31.For a wedding, you need a bright, agreeing, a cake and some confetti.

:22:32. > :22:37.Mostly it is made of paper, but as our reporter has been finding out,

:22:38. > :22:44.not all. I'm in this field are full of the most gorgeous flowers. They

:22:45. > :22:50.are planning on repaying 500 million titles this year. They have only got

:22:51. > :22:56.ten days to get this entire crop in. The question is, how do they turn

:22:57. > :23:04.all of these flowers into this? It's harvest time in Shropshire. It is a

:23:05. > :23:09.1,500 acre site but 40 acres are reserved for growing flowers which

:23:10. > :23:13.are turned into confetti. The majority of our flowers are

:23:14. > :23:19.daffodils which gives us pink, purple, blue and light. We have some

:23:20. > :23:22.calendula and some wallflowers. It is a family run business. The owners

:23:23. > :23:27.originally sold flowers at the market in Newport. They come into

:23:28. > :23:31.bloom at different times so it is a juggling act, working out which ones

:23:32. > :23:33.come first. All the colours are different and they can come out at

:23:34. > :23:40.different times of the day, depending on the weather. It can

:23:41. > :23:43.vary from one colour in the afternoon and one colour in the

:23:44. > :23:53.morning. It takes practice, trying to perfect the art. Pickers will

:23:54. > :23:58.gather thousands of petals. Everything is hand`picked because

:23:59. > :24:02.the petals are so delicate. In the summer, the company receives 1000

:24:03. > :24:06.orders each month. This year, they expect to deliver at least 7,500

:24:07. > :24:12.packages to brides around the country. That's a lot of weddings

:24:13. > :24:19.and a lot of confetti. Joining me now is Katie Plant, the manager

:24:20. > :24:24.here. You make natural confetti. That means it's biodegradable. It

:24:25. > :24:29.will degrade in just a couple of days. We do not die our petals. You

:24:30. > :24:37.have been really lucky with the weather here. How he managed to

:24:38. > :24:41.harvest so fast? We have just over half of what we require. We are

:24:42. > :24:47.looking at just over 1.5 tonnes. That's a lot of confetti. This is

:24:48. > :24:53.the weather driven business. You only have ten days left you feeling

:24:54. > :24:57.nervous? Yes, especially when it is a bit cloudy today. We are hoping

:24:58. > :25:01.for not much rain. Rain at night time is fine but obviously when it

:25:02. > :25:07.is wet in the day, you cannot take because it's muddy. We want and

:25:08. > :25:10.sunshine. Thank you. That's how you make confetti. Let's just hope they

:25:11. > :25:16.manage to get everything in, in those ten days. It's time for the

:25:17. > :25:31.weather. We've had a rather dry and hot July

:25:32. > :25:36.and we are welcoming in a slightly damp August. We have plenty of cloud

:25:37. > :25:41.in the forecast as we had through the next few days. We will get some

:25:42. > :25:45.sunny spells and it will be a largely dry day. Things are starting

:25:46. > :25:48.to feel fresher. Today things started to change because we had

:25:49. > :25:53.this weather system working its way through. It has brought some cloud

:25:54. > :26:00.and the air is slightly less humid behind that. Tomorrow, those

:26:01. > :26:05.temperatures are going to be a little better than they have been.

:26:06. > :26:10.Down to 19 Celsius. This time last week we were in the 30s. It really

:26:11. > :26:13.is a little different. Overnight tonight it is largely dry. A few

:26:14. > :26:18.clear spells but also some cloud, overnight. The possibility of a few

:26:19. > :26:23.spots of rain. Temperatures overnight are doing a little better,

:26:24. > :26:30.around 11 to 14 Celsius. And less humid Il to things. Tomorrow morning

:26:31. > :26:38.starts off with a few bits of cloud. Some good breaks and the sun is out

:26:39. > :26:42.as well. The cloud structure still into the afternoon. Our secretaries

:26:43. > :26:46.are only getting up to or 24 degrees but it will feel a little fresher.

:26:47. > :26:50.It is a finance dry and to our Wednesday. We could have a few

:26:51. > :26:55.showers across the North Midlands overnight. Our temperatures again

:26:56. > :27:00.ranging through 12 and 15 degrees. By Thursday, I'm afraid we have a

:27:01. > :27:05.little bit of rain. Working its way through during the afternoon. Not

:27:06. > :27:08.great if you are off to the cricket. Temperatures a degree or two down on

:27:09. > :27:11.where they will be for the next couple of days. As we make our way

:27:12. > :27:15.towards the end of the week, there is even more rain in the forecast.

:27:16. > :27:17.It is looking like it will be a doubt we can.

:27:18. > :27:22.More than 100 Palestinians are killed in Gaza, after a night

:27:23. > :27:30.Calls from nearby residents for Birmingham Airport to drop plans for

:27:31. > :27:32.a new error path. That was Midlands Today. I will be back at 10pm with

:27:33. > :27:58.an update. I leave the ashram, travel halfway

:27:59. > :28:02.across the world to find my father, Oh, well. As Vashrati says,

:28:03. > :28:10.gotta keep smiling! We don't tend to use the bathroom

:28:11. > :28:13.together here. All right, well,

:28:14. > :28:15.I'll catch you later. This ashram of yours,

:28:16. > :28:18.it might be a cult. I take it back,

:28:19. > :28:51.he's definitely Cuckoo's son. MUSIC: "Changing"
