:00:00. > :00:08.Good evening. Commonwealth Games closing ceremony,

:00:09. > :00:11.Good evening. Campaigners are calling

:00:12. > :00:14.for an application for a permit for a new waste recycling plant in

:00:15. > :00:16.the Black Country to be rejected. They say it would be smelly,

:00:17. > :00:19.potentially dangerous and would blight an area that's already home

:00:20. > :00:21.to an illegal rubbish mountain. The company

:00:22. > :00:23.behind the project have rejected the A proposal to convert this old

:00:24. > :00:26.railway terminal into a waste plant hasn't impressed

:00:27. > :00:30.these Brierley Hill residents. The increase in traffic volume on

:00:31. > :00:33.side streets and residential streets They are talking

:00:34. > :00:37.about one lorry a minute coming to More than 700 have people have

:00:38. > :00:45.objected to plans from Clean Power Properties for a new household waste

:00:46. > :00:47.recycling plant to produce energy. But it's the technology and smell

:00:48. > :00:51.that has protestors worried. Housing here is 50

:00:52. > :00:53.or 60 metres away. And we calculate that literally

:00:54. > :00:56.thousands of people could be affected

:00:57. > :01:01.by bad odours if this goes ahead. Part of the scheme involves building

:01:02. > :01:04.an anaerobic digester to break They're relatively safe,

:01:05. > :01:11.but a similar plant exploded Now the companies say that

:01:12. > :01:16.the site would be a safe place to They could create electricity

:01:17. > :01:23.to power up to 10,000 homes. They also say no waste will be

:01:24. > :01:36.stored on site of homes This giant mountain

:01:37. > :01:39.of rubbish is yet to be cleared, despite the company responsible

:01:40. > :01:42.receiving a court order to clear What we don't want to become is

:01:43. > :01:46.Brierly Hill, What local people want here is

:01:47. > :01:59.homes, good quality jobs. The Environment Agency will decide

:02:00. > :02:01.whether to grant The final decision will be taken

:02:02. > :02:14.by Dudley Council A dedication ceremony

:02:15. > :02:20.for a new memorial to soldiers who died in WW1 has been held today.

:02:21. > :02:24.The Birmingham branch of the Western Front Association organised

:02:25. > :02:27.the event at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, which

:02:28. > :02:31.It came on the eve of the 100th anniversary

:02:32. > :02:37.This is a war which affected everyone.

:02:38. > :02:40.So, unlike contemporary wars where somebody might know somebody in

:02:41. > :02:44.the army, then, in 1914, everybody knew somebody in the army.

:02:45. > :02:47.And by 1918, there was not a family that was not touched by this war.

:02:48. > :02:50.I know someone who died in the war and everyone else does.

:02:51. > :02:57.It touched every family in England, in Britain.

:02:58. > :03:01.Double Gold medal winning triathlete Jodie Stimpson was back on home

:03:02. > :03:04.ground today competing for the first time since the Commonwealth Games.

:03:05. > :03:07.The event, named in honour of the Oldbury star, came as Midlands

:03:08. > :03:10.competitors celebrated a huge haul of medals at the Glasgow games.

:03:11. > :03:16.It's not often you get to compete in a race named in your honour and it's

:03:17. > :03:20.not often you get to mingle with a double Commonwealth Gold medallist.

:03:21. > :03:22.I'm not going to let everybody else have the fun!

:03:23. > :03:26.This is what I do, this is what I love.

:03:27. > :03:29.So I'm not going to miss out on the fun.

:03:30. > :03:31.For the other athletes at Sandwell Valley Country Park today,

:03:32. > :03:37.I'll be a lot further near the back, I won't be anywhere near that.

:03:38. > :03:39.But to know she's in the same race is good.

:03:40. > :03:42.She only lives around the corner, she'll be home having a cup

:03:43. > :03:50.Today, there were no bikes ` just a swim and a run.

:03:51. > :03:53.Well, the front few are coming through now and there are actually

:03:54. > :04:01.And here comes Jody Stimpson, first over the line.

:04:02. > :04:10.And it was another victory to add to Jodie's collection.

:04:11. > :04:13.Jodie actually finished some time ago, but just her presence here has

:04:14. > :04:16.inspired many of these athletes, including some who have never tried

:04:17. > :04:23.Watching all the events on TV, I feel like I need to do something

:04:24. > :04:25.sporty and so I thought I'd give it this ago.

:04:26. > :04:29.After the race, everyone wanted a souvenir of the day.

:04:30. > :04:39.To win and then come back and have this kind of support,

:04:40. > :04:46.At the Commonwealth Games last night, more West Midlands medals.

:04:47. > :04:49.19`year`old Matthew Hudson`Smith, from Birmingham

:04:50. > :04:51.and fellow Birchfield Harrier, Michael Bingham taking Gold

:04:52. > :04:59.While fellow team mate Danny Talbot helped England win silver in the

:05:00. > :05:08.With 41 medals, it's been a hugely successful Games for the region.

:05:09. > :05:10.One that it's hoped will inspire many to try

:05:11. > :05:20.and emulate the achievements of athletes like Jodie Stimpson.

:05:21. > :05:31.A good evening. We have plenty of sunshine but is not the worst of

:05:32. > :05:36.evenings and before the sun goes down. As we go into Monday, they may

:05:37. > :05:39.be a couple of Tripoli showers in western parts and what will be a

:05:40. > :05:44.cool uncomfortable night, that what we have seen for the last month or

:05:45. > :05:47.so. As far as Monday goes, more bright blue skies and sunshine to

:05:48. > :05:52.kick off the day. A couple of showers into the afternoon though.

:05:53. > :05:54.What will be a relatively warm afternoon maybe a bit thundery once

:05:55. > :05:56.we get to it. Here's Charlie Slater.

:05:57. > :05:58.The national forecast is next, and Midlands Today is back at 11.15pm.

:05:59. > :06:13.For now, bye`bye. Good evening. Some of us have had a

:06:14. > :06:17.sunny weekend but for others it has not stopped raining for the last

:06:18. > :06:23.couple of days, you can see where on the satellite picture, big swell of

:06:24. > :06:27.cloud, dominating things. Torrential storms, if you see the coverage, you

:06:28. > :06:30.can see how much rain there has been, that has caused issues.

:06:31. > :06:35.Thunder and lightning thrown in as well. This area of storms moves

:06:36. > :06:39.north out of Glasgow but this clutch of heavy downpours pushing into the

:06:40. > :06:43.south-west of Scotland, we will have to keep an eye on that for the

:06:44. > :06:47.closing ceremony. One thing is for sure, which showers and blustery

:06:48. > :06:51.wind, it will not be anything like as fine and warm as it was the

:06:52. > :06:54.opening ceremony. Further south across the UK, no such problems, the

:06:55. > :06:55.odd shower, they
