:12:50. > :12:54.have seen on camera, some food is not being produced. We have to
:12:55. > :12:58.produce all we can in this country, as we did 100 years ago during the
:12:59. > :13:03.war. What about your farm? What do you produce and what do you own? We
:13:04. > :13:10.are mixed farm, we have a few cows and a few sheep and we have wheat.
:13:11. > :13:14.We have all of the commodities that are down in price since the start of
:13:15. > :13:17.the show. I have not known a time when every commodity were down.

:14:45. > :14:48.But 100 years ago the war didn't just affect those

:14:56. > :14:57.for those who suddenly found themselves living in a country
:14:58. > :15:11.Birmingham just before the Great War. A city of 800,000 people, where
:15:12. > :15:18.hundreds of German immigrants lived, taking advantage of its
:15:19. > :15:23.economic prosperity. But by 1914, German born citizens were no longer
:15:24. > :15:27.mingling on the streets of Birmingham. Instead, they found
:15:28. > :15:32.themselves locked up in the cells at the city was macro main police
:15:33. > :15:36.station. Frankly, anyone who had a German sounding name starts to look
:15:37. > :15:42.vulnerable and they begin to target them. They had already been
:15:43. > :15:48.anti`German protests and riots in other cities. The Chief Constable
:15:49. > :15:53.feared it could spread to Birmingham. In June 1915, around 60
:15:54. > :15:57.detained Germans were marched to new Street and put on a train to the
:15:58. > :16:21.north of England. Newspapers described them as enemy aliens.
:16:22. > :16:28.They were taken to Handforth Internment Camp in Cheshire, one of
:16:29. > :16:31.scores of such camps where ordinary citizens were held alongside
:16:32. > :16:36.prisoners of war. Some had married Brummie girls who would suffer
:16:37. > :16:43.terribly because of the fate of their husbands. The wives were very
:16:44. > :16:47.destitute, usually the breadwinner of the family was interned for three
:16:48. > :16:52.or four years. Some of these wives were also repatriated, so this could
:16:53. > :16:56.happen where they were repatriated to Germany, sent back to Germany,
:16:57. > :17:00.where they did not know anyone and they came into a country at war, so
:17:01. > :17:07.it was not a happy time for these wives. And it was not just Germans
:17:08. > :17:13.subject to scrutiny. Any foreigner visiting Birmingham signed the
:17:14. > :17:19.register of aliens, including world`renowned Sarah Bernhardt
:17:20. > :17:31.Thomas who was in the city for two days for a play.
:17:32. > :17:37.Not all Germans living in Birmingham ended up being rejected from the
:17:38. > :17:47.city. This is adding to the Abbey... An order of Benedictine
:17:48. > :17:58.monks had been living here after evading prosecution in `` after
:17:59. > :18:06.evading persecution in Prussia. They had to stay and they had to
:18:07. > :18:10.adjust to sit it out. They were caught up in a conflict that really

:18:16. > :18:18.Birmingham when the war ended. But, despite their experiences, some of
:18:19. > :18:24.the Germans interned in the camps did return to the city. No longer
:18:25. > :18:28.enemy aliens and allowed to resume the lies that had been so
:18:29. > :18:33.dramatically interrupted. `` resume the lives.
