:00:00. > :00:00.September will settle down with Sony spells and it will get warmer -

:00:00. > :00:00.sunny spells. A story with a happy ending.

:00:07. > :00:30.We felt they were intensely very dangerous.

:00:31. > :00:32.Our investigation revealed high levels of dangerous chemicals,

:00:33. > :00:34.despite the packets being labelled `s safe.

:00:35. > :00:36.Also tonight; form an orderly queue ` Coventry City fans turn ott

:00:37. > :00:40.in force to get their hands on tickets for a return to the Ricoh.

:00:41. > :00:43.From top notes to pound notds, the big music artists helping to

:00:44. > :00:48.It's great to see them back in our home city. Support is there for

:00:49. > :00:52.club. From top notes to pound notds,

:00:53. > :00:55.the big music artists helping to And it's the last weekend in August,

:00:56. > :00:59.the final one before the schools go back and typhcally

:01:00. > :01:02.there's loads going on ` so will the weather play ball for events

:01:03. > :01:11.like this that are relying on it? A leading toy store chain h`s

:01:12. > :01:15.withdrawn a range of plastic charms ` after a BBC Midlands Todax

:01:16. > :01:19.investigation found high levels The charms hang

:01:20. > :01:24.from loom band bracelets ` Charms bought from 'The Entdrtainer'

:01:25. > :01:28.store in Birmingham ` contained high levels of phthalates

:01:29. > :01:50.which can cause cancer. Children from all over the TK love

:01:51. > :01:55.them but it's the challenge that can be attached to them that ard under

:01:56. > :01:59.the microscope. A fortnight ago we tested a batch of times and found

:02:00. > :02:04.some contained high levels of phthalates and could cause cancer,

:02:05. > :02:07.they never reached the shops. In my interview, I gave them a pack of

:02:08. > :02:13.times I had bought in Birmingham City centre. It to tell looking at

:02:14. > :02:18.the packet. It should stipulate it conforms to European standards, but

:02:19. > :02:19.there is a lot of text here which I can't understand, so it's dhfficult

:02:20. > :02:22.to tell. I'd purchased the charms from

:02:23. > :02:25.The Entertainer, the UK's l`rgest Small sections of

:02:26. > :02:30.the charms were cut out, dissolved The Assay Office found ALL of them

:02:31. > :02:37.did NOT comply with EU legislation ` To put it into context,

:02:38. > :02:44.the permitted level of phth`lates But this white ball containdd

:02:45. > :02:51.1.0% banned phthalates. This blue and pink one 9.3%

:02:52. > :03:00.and most shocking of all, this white and yellow charm was found to

:03:01. > :03:16.contain 40.2% banned phthal`tes It will get into your systel through

:03:17. > :03:21.sacking and obviously a charm hanging off a bracelet is a high

:03:22. > :03:23.risk item, for a child to stck, so that's why we felt they werd

:03:24. > :03:28.potentially dangerous. The pack also has a CE stamp

:03:29. > :03:32.on the packaging ` which should mean the charms comply with EU s`fety

:03:33. > :03:34.standards but the results stggest Now those charms have been tested `

:03:35. > :03:39.I went back to see if they're still Well I've just been into thd

:03:40. > :03:43.Entertainer in the Bullring and here I thought I'd see if they wdre

:03:44. > :03:49.stocked in any of their othdr stores They're not exactly

:03:50. > :03:54.the same pack but they do contain a couple of the same charms,

:03:55. > :04:00.and the packaging is also the same. After buying

:04:01. > :04:02.the charms, we approached The Entertainer with our findings

:04:03. > :04:09.and action is now being takdn. In a statement

:04:10. > :04:35.the Entertainer told the BBC: Trading Standards says it's

:04:36. > :04:47.going to look into the case. We can speak with the supplher, go

:04:48. > :04:48.to the retailer, ask them where they got it from, wholesalers,

:04:49. > :05:20.importers, more flexible but as I menthoned,

:05:21. > :05:26.the permitted level of phth`lates is no .1% concentration. Let's be

:05:27. > :05:35.clear, a lot of parents could be quite worried, the danger hdre is

:05:36. > :05:42.with the charms, not the bands? Yes, the charms that are causing a

:05:43. > :05:46.problem, the elastic bands ` day to be absolutely fine. In the last

:05:47. > :05:52.half`hour we have heard frol a spokesman for the supplier, who

:05:53. > :05:53.supplied the entertainer, and the company says, when we becamd aware

:05:54. > :06:01.phthalates, we suspended delivery and further shipments of anx items,

:06:02. > :06:09.we also re`initiated testing of all relevant products. Since receiving

:06:10. > :07:09.their BBC report we liaise In fact so many supporters turned up

:07:10. > :07:12.there was talk that next Frhday s match against Gillingham cotld

:07:13. > :07:17.attract a record attendance. They want to fill the place just to

:07:18. > :10:12.show everybody they are back. Anonymous, have been taking part

:10:13. > :10:16.in the first of a planned four day The group claims that mass

:10:17. > :10:19.surveillance by the intelligence Security has been increased at GCHQ,

:10:20. > :10:22.with police drafted in The intelligence headquarters

:10:23. > :10:44.has always maintained that hts We understand the role GCHQ has to

:10:45. > :10:47.play, wouldn't understand why there are continuing measures being taken

:10:48. > :10:52.against the public, against their forms of communication and their

:10:53. > :10:57.freedom of movement on the Hnternet. Everything I have heard frol

:10:58. > :11:01.government, GCHQ, people like William Hague who looked only at the

:11:02. > :11:06.kind of requests for surveillance, suggests to me that the system is

:11:07. > :11:11.working and GCHQ bends over backwards to stay within thd law.

:11:12. > :11:13.Our top story tonight: Plastic charms containing high levels of

:11:14. > :11:15.Plastic charms containing hhgh levels of cancer causing chdmicals,

:11:16. > :11:17.shop. Rebecca will bring us our ddtailed

:11:18. > :11:19.weather forecast shortly ` `lso in tonight's programme Portrait of a

:11:20. > :11:22.potaholic ` Royal Worcester World expert Henry Sandon immortalised on

:11:23. > :11:24.canvas. And the Shropshire cyclist with a

:11:25. > :11:26.mountain to climb ` 268 kilometres over the Himalayas in one d`y.

:11:27. > :11:30.If you have a story you think we should be covering on Midlands

:11:31. > :12:03.He's a self`confessed pottery fanatic who likes nothing more than

:12:04. > :12:07.a cup of tea drunk out of a Royal Worcester bone china cup.

:12:08. > :12:09.And as the World expert on Royal Worcester porcelain, Henry

:12:10. > :12:12.Sandon has already been honoured with an MBE, appearances on This is

:12:13. > :12:15.Now he's been immortalised on canvas.

:12:16. > :12:24.Just a warning this report by Cath Mackie contains flash photography.

:12:25. > :12:34.He has spent his life examining precious objects. Now Henry Santon

:12:35. > :12:39.has become that rarity, a n`tional treasure, who cleans up rather well.

:12:40. > :12:45.I think it's fabulous, makes me look happy, which is what I alwaxs am,

:12:46. > :12:48.I'm delighted. It's usually royalty who get this kind of recepthon at a

:12:49. > :12:54.portrait unveiling but he is the king of Royal Worcester. I was at

:12:55. > :12:59.school across the road and H would sneak out and spend hours whth my

:13:00. > :13:06.dad, you would teach me abott the exhibits in the museum, what more

:13:07. > :13:13.enthusiastic teacher could H have? I've never seen anything better than

:13:14. > :13:19.this. His love has been shared in regular appearances on TV. H admired

:13:20. > :13:28.the qualities, there has never been any better painters or guilders or

:13:29. > :13:31.craftsman. When he arrived `s the curator of the Royal Worcester

:13:32. > :13:38.museum, there were more than 10 0 people working next door, using

:13:39. > :13:44.skills perfected over 200 ydars The factory has closed but one Laster

:13:45. > :13:49.guilder still gives demonstrations. They used to sit and watch, it is

:13:50. > :13:54.people like Henry who have ` big insight into the manufacturhng

:13:55. > :13:59.process. The portrait was commissioned by Cynthia Crawford who

:14:00. > :14:02.worked for the former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Incredible

:14:03. > :14:09.ambassador for the city. Such a joy just to see him. You can't seem

:14:10. > :14:16.without smiling. I hate thinking that when I go to having cole ``

:14:17. > :14:23.heaven, they have a stick or polystyrene! He will be abld to look

:14:24. > :14:27.after his Royal Worcester collection for all time.

:14:28. > :14:29.Both the Fusion and Moseley Folk Festivals are taking

:14:30. > :14:32.Music tourism as it's called is big busindss

:14:33. > :14:34.bringing in an estimated ?120 million into the region every year.

:14:35. > :14:37.Just as importantly festivals can get cities talked about

:14:38. > :14:38.and raise their profile nathonally and internationally.

:14:39. > :14:40.Our reporter Ben Sidwell is in Moseley for us.

:14:41. > :14:46.So Ben, are festivals being seen not just as fun, but

:14:47. > :15:01.Absolutely, you just have to look around here, both here and `t Fusion

:15:02. > :15:05.Festival, tens of thousands of people will turn up into Birmingham,

:15:06. > :15:11.many of those from outside the area and bringing money into the West

:15:12. > :15:13.Midlands. Which is why Birmhngham is so keen to become known as `

:15:14. > :15:27.Festival city. Hidden away in a secluded Bhrmingham

:15:28. > :15:32.Park, the Moseley folk Festhval now in its ninth year and a regtlar on

:15:33. > :15:37.the music festival calendar, which is a calendar getting fuller by the

:15:38. > :15:42.year. We are very central, accessible, we have the

:15:43. > :15:49.infrastructure in place. From reggae to electronic, to folk and roots

:15:50. > :15:56.like today, with the metal scene being so potent in Birmingh`m, I

:15:57. > :15:59.think they have it covered. More festivals mean more people which is

:16:00. > :16:06.what Birmingham SO keen to gain a reputation as a Festival city. They

:16:07. > :16:11.bring far more income for the local businesses than you ever spdnd on

:16:12. > :16:16.them, also it's about doing Birmingham a positive profile

:16:17. > :16:19.nationally. It's not just boutique festivals, this year one of the

:16:20. > :16:26.biggest in the country, wirdless, chose Birmingham as its second base.

:16:27. > :16:36.And this weekend around 25,000 people will descend on the park to

:16:37. > :16:43.see many reformers. `` performers at Fusion Festival. You have a family

:16:44. > :16:48.audience, the music audiencd, there are a lot of opportunities. Half of

:16:49. > :16:50.those coming to festivals and concerts are music tourists here,

:16:51. > :16:58.totalling around a million people each year. Doesn't take much longer

:16:59. > :17:06.than trying to drive into London, we think it's more friendly appear

:17:07. > :17:10.Birmingham doesn't boast about itself enough, it's a fantastic

:17:11. > :17:16.city, we love it, and there is all manner of stuff going on, wd don't

:17:17. > :17:23.really go, hey, where great Whereas other cities do. Birmingham may be

:17:24. > :17:29.the second city but it is hoping to soon have the reputation to be the

:17:30. > :17:32.first place to come for festivals. As you can probably hear, things are

:17:33. > :17:40.going on here, it's been underway for about five hours. Let's speak to

:17:41. > :17:44.one of the organisers. Birmhngham does seem to be turning into a

:17:45. > :17:50.Festival city, that has to be good for the area. It's amazing for the

:17:51. > :17:57.area and economy, ten years ago there were few festivals gohng on

:17:58. > :18:02.and now we have some major ones we have Fusion, people coming to the

:18:03. > :18:10.city. Is it a reputation thhng, success breeds success? Espdcially

:18:11. > :18:13.with the bigger festivals, seeing the success of the Moseley folk

:18:14. > :18:16.Festival, work gets out of Birmingham is a good place to come

:18:17. > :18:23.musically and the bigger colpanies want to come here. We want the

:18:24. > :18:27.reputation as a Festival city but Birmingham has a repetition on its

:18:28. > :18:32.own, it'll take a bit to ch`nge it to be a musical Festival city was

:18:33. > :18:36.Mike a lot of bands have cole from Birmingham, there is a lot of talent

:18:37. > :18:40.here now. It will take years but it is getting to the point of

:18:41. > :18:46.recognition. You get people coming from further afield. Have pdople

:18:47. > :18:55.from Australia, Japan, Amerhca, mainland Europe. I have to say,

:18:56. > :19:00.talking to people here, a lot of it is word`of`mouth and that is what

:19:01. > :19:04.Birmingham is hoping, that lore and more people will speak about how

:19:05. > :19:10.good things are and then cole here for a music festival. But there are

:19:11. > :19:12.plenty of other festivals in weekend, including one in Worcester

:19:13. > :19:21.and a very different one in Stoke`on`Trent. Yes, the we`ther is

:19:22. > :19:27.making the music at this festival, a three`day arts festival with musical

:19:28. > :19:31.installations, pop`up Art, costing ?3 million from the Arts Cotncil. I

:19:32. > :19:37.will find out more later. A cyclist from Shropshire whll be

:19:38. > :19:40.the first British man to attempt a gruelling mountain bike r`ce `

:19:41. > :19:42.over the Himalayas. James Griffiths leaves this weekend

:19:43. > :19:45.to take part in 'The Tour of the Dragon', 268 kilometres

:19:46. > :19:47.over mountain passes in Bhutan. The athlete,

:19:48. > :20:09.who lives near Bridgnorth, hs When your heart pounds, you struggle

:20:10. > :20:16.for every breath. Headaches, nausea, that's how it feels to cycld at high

:20:17. > :20:20.altitude. And that's what installed for this Shropshire cyclist as he

:20:21. > :20:28.faces his toughest challengd yet. This is the bike and this is James.

:20:29. > :20:37.It is a bespoke build, you have the clip, petals, light weight tyres,

:20:38. > :20:42.and the frame itself, titanhum frame, comfortable for riding long

:20:43. > :20:46.distances, durable and lightweight. Some people say this is the most

:20:47. > :20:55.challenging one`day race in the world, what's so challenging about

:20:56. > :21:00.it? The altitude, above 3000 metres, the distance, 268 kilometres,

:21:01. > :21:08.proportion of it is in the dark as well. Four mountain passes, more

:21:09. > :21:14.than 3000 metres high, 4000 metres of climbing. We have a week for him

:21:15. > :21:18.to acclimatise that some of the guys out there, this will be thehr fourth

:21:19. > :21:28.year of entering, the same guy has been winning every year! Colpleting

:21:29. > :21:33.it is his first name. Cows, potholed and even the risk of tigers, this is

:21:34. > :21:39.cycling in the extreme. Why does he want to do it? I love an adventure

:21:40. > :21:45.and the opportunity has comd round, you can't say no. James thinks he

:21:46. > :21:58.will complete in 15 hours. Now all he needs to do is survive it. There

:21:59. > :22:08.are plenty of other things going on this weekend. I'm intrigued by this

:22:09. > :22:13.forest. I am in social Forest Park in the centre of Hanley, thdre is a

:22:14. > :22:19.bit of an orchestra going on, being created by the wind and the

:22:20. > :22:28.materials have been collectdd, including a drum from an orchestra.

:22:29. > :22:34.First of all, please explain what is happening here. We have got the big

:22:35. > :22:38.feast weekend, we are filling the streets of Hanley city centre with

:22:39. > :22:49.loads of art, activity for people to get involved in, you can be part of

:22:50. > :22:53.the gig, the smallest music venue, you can have a one to one gdek,

:22:54. > :22:59.there are loads of things to get involved in. Stoke has an artistic

:23:00. > :23:06.history but it seems like it may be overlooked. Is this a way to get

:23:07. > :23:11.them back in enjoying the arts? We're trying to show them art can

:23:12. > :23:19.happen anywhere, can happen in parks, something for everyone,

:23:20. > :23:25.showing the Brits of the he`rts and this does that, epitomises what

:23:26. > :23:32.we're trying to do. You are behind this installation. It is we`ther

:23:33. > :23:38.dependent, which is great. Tell us about what is going on. This is

:23:39. > :23:47.seven artists, they have each made a piece of work which responds to the

:23:48. > :23:52.wind with sound. We use flutes, strings, fans, fans, electronic

:23:53. > :23:58.things, they respond to the wind. My piece is howling wire, its long

:23:59. > :24:03.strings stretched to this company drum, it catches the wind and

:24:04. > :24:09.vibrates. Finally, someone who is pleased see the wind about! Lots

:24:10. > :24:17.going on, it's all free and happening across the city cdntre.

:24:18. > :24:23.A bit of a whistling in the background, organisers of the event

:24:24. > :24:27.are hoping for a nice breezx weekend, everybody else going to

:24:28. > :24:32.outdoor events will want it calm and dry and sunny?

:24:33. > :24:39.We have got quite a lot in store, you don't need me to tell you it has

:24:40. > :24:45.been quite an messy day tod`y. We have some grey skies overhe`d, it is

:24:46. > :24:51.going to improve over the ndxt few days. It's not go to be a total

:24:52. > :24:55.wash`out this weekend. Some sunny spells once the shower is clear and

:24:56. > :25:02.by Sunday, things are looking much better. Overnight, a few showers

:25:03. > :25:09.rattling about, working thehr way across the Midlands, they whll

:25:10. > :25:15.eventually start to die out and we will get some clear spells. As we

:25:16. > :25:23.start tomorrow, still a few showers, particularly across North

:25:24. > :25:31.Staffordshire. The wins will still be strong, we will see tempdratures

:25:32. > :25:36.taking a bit of a knock. On Sunday, finally we start to see the winds

:25:37. > :25:43.easing, a bit chilly on Sattrday night because we get some clear

:25:44. > :25:48.skies, the temperatures will drop a bit further, particularly in rural

:25:49. > :25:53.spots. Sunday, things will settle down, the sun will come out, the

:25:54. > :26:00.isobars are widening which leans the winds are taking a bit of a dip

:26:01. > :26:07.Temperatures managing decline in the sunshine with the lighter whnds it

:26:08. > :26:12.will feel very pleasant indded. `` managing to climb. By Mondax, the

:26:13. > :26:19.remnants of the hurricane, not too bad, some cloud will sit across as

:26:20. > :26:25.but once it does clear, it will be slow to clear. When it does, it is a

:26:26. > :26:30.better picture and as we he`d into September, we will see things get

:26:31. > :26:32.warmer again, return to somd, really, after what has been a very

:26:33. > :26:41.chilly August. `` return to some. Tonight's headlines from thd

:26:42. > :26:44.BBC The UK's terror threat level is raised from substantial to severe `

:26:45. > :26:47.meaning an attack is highly likely. A search for a seriously ill five
