:00:43. > :00:45.Banned from wearing their football kit -

:00:46. > :00:49.the youth teams sponsored by a tattoo parlour and a nightclub.

:00:50. > :00:53.It is only a bit of writing on our shirts. Are they going to ban David

:00:54. > :00:57.Beckham from having tattoos? In harmony for 70 years,

:00:58. > :00:59.the Coventry male voice choir Storm Barbara barges

:01:00. > :01:04.in before the weekend, but could another deep depression be

:01:05. > :01:06.looming for Christmas? The Head of G4S prison services,

:01:07. > :01:23.the company which runs Birmingham Prison, says

:01:24. > :01:26.he was "surprised" by last That's despite a recent report

:01:27. > :01:31.which said urgent action was needed to prevent an attack

:01:32. > :01:35.on prison officers. More than 400 inmates have been

:01:36. > :01:37.transferred to other jails, following 12 hours

:01:38. > :01:42.of disturbances last Friday. They started after an inmate stole

:01:43. > :01:45.some keys from a prison officer. Havoc and hi-jinks

:01:46. > :01:54.captured on mobile phones as hundreds of prisoners took

:01:55. > :01:57.control of HMP Birmingham. Lighting fires in stairwells,

:01:58. > :02:02.burning paper records. Five days on, order

:02:03. > :02:04.restored and a visit Just a few months ago

:02:05. > :02:19.Sam Geemah was in charge I have been here today meeting the

:02:20. > :02:24.staff who were on duty last Friday and talking to them about their

:02:25. > :02:28.experiences and I can't emphasise how proud I am of some of the

:02:29. > :02:31.individual acts of bravery that took place here to make sure the

:02:32. > :02:35.situation was contained on the winks where it happened.

:02:36. > :02:38.Even so, the bill for the damage is estimated at three

:02:39. > :02:44.The company's also got the worry that inmates may have made copies

:02:45. > :02:46.of keys they got hold of during the trouble and

:02:47. > :02:50.then there's the wider matter of staffing.

:02:51. > :02:55.There's a riot because they were not getting what they need, the

:02:56. > :03:02.prisoners. There two officers four fools. -- four for girls.

:03:03. > :03:05.The Government says lack of staffing and the use of illegal

:03:06. > :03:07.drugs are the main factors behind Friday's riot.

:03:08. > :03:09.The minister says problems at HMP Bham are replicated in jails

:03:10. > :03:23.The Government is already announced major investment to deal with this.

:03:24. > :03:28.We have plans to strengthen the front line and give staff tools and

:03:29. > :03:35.resources to challenge and support prisoners and turn them around.

:03:36. > :03:36.Turning around this place will not be simple or quick.

:03:37. > :03:38.Violence against both officers and inmates is soaring.

:03:39. > :03:43.in their worst state for over a decade.

:03:44. > :03:44.Earlier, in an exclusive TV interview, I spoke

:03:45. > :03:48.to Jerry Petherick, who is the Managing Director of G4S

:03:49. > :03:52.custodial services, the private firm which runs

:03:53. > :04:03.I asked why it took 12 hours to bring the situation under control.

:04:04. > :04:13.This was a large-scale events. We half to make sure we respond in a

:04:14. > :04:16.way that maximises safety and delivers the required result.

:04:17. > :04:25.Inevitably, there is going to be a time like before we have sufficient

:04:26. > :04:29.staff here who are trained in the Tornado tactics, the advanced

:04:30. > :04:36.tactics. And at what point with a tornado force is called in? I do not

:04:37. > :04:44.know. But I do know that when I got the call, I instructed that we call

:04:45. > :04:50.for assistance. That will be the subject of an investigation, whether

:04:51. > :04:54.we did things right or wrong. I've yet to come across an investigation

:04:55. > :05:00.that says everything went smoothly, because life is not like that. To

:05:01. > :05:04.say that is an understatement. We have all seen the images of

:05:05. > :05:08.prisoners wearing riot gear, which is pretty extraordinary. You show me

:05:09. > :05:15.some images today of the damage that was done. You'd be paying tribute to

:05:16. > :05:20.your stuff, but the plain fact is, they lost control. -- you will have

:05:21. > :05:27.been paying tribute to your staff. , Yes we had to withdraw. It needs to

:05:28. > :05:31.be clear that people I've talked about staffing levels and I have

:05:32. > :05:37.looked at the staffing levels present at the time that this began.

:05:38. > :05:42.And they were, in my view, based on 35 years of working in this

:05:43. > :05:46.industry, entirely appropriate and entirely safe. Currently on your

:05:47. > :05:52.recruitment website there are 25 vacancies for prison officers. The

:05:53. > :05:56.salary is less than ?10 an hour. Given what happened on Friday, do

:05:57. > :06:00.you really expect you will have a rush of applications for those

:06:01. > :06:04.positions? That is obviously going to be one of the issues we need to

:06:05. > :06:10.look out. But I can say we are recruiting and we have 16 staff

:06:11. > :06:15.currently on their initial training course. This started into

:06:16. > :06:22.micro-winks and spread to a further two wings, so wasn't content. Why

:06:23. > :06:26.not? I spoke to the staff and another the ones who were applying

:06:27. > :06:32.chains and padlocks to the gates as an additional level of security were

:06:33. > :06:35.faced as they were putting on the chains by prisoners are advancing

:06:36. > :06:39.towards them and threatening them saying they had better hurry up and

:06:40. > :06:46.get the chains on, because they were coming. And by God, those staff

:06:47. > :06:51.stood their ground. Do you take any responsibility for it? Of course, it

:06:52. > :06:57.is my estate and my job to prevent that. Did you fail in that duty? I

:06:58. > :06:59.will tell you that after the investigation.

:07:00. > :07:01.There's a new appeal tonight for help in solving

:07:02. > :07:04.the mystery of two young boys, who disappeared without trace twenty

:07:05. > :07:07.David Spencer and Patrick Warren are now feared dead -

:07:08. > :07:09.but the police say they're still hopeful of

:07:10. > :07:13.Their families say they can't rest until they know what happened.

:07:14. > :07:19.David Spencer loved boxing, here he is in the ring, competing

:07:20. > :07:26.Just weeks later on Boxing Day, the 13-year-old disappeared

:07:27. > :07:27.along with his 11-year-old friend, Paddy Warren.

:07:28. > :07:41.conference, Christmas has never been the same since.

:07:42. > :07:48.I will always think of him. Constantly, everyday. The has not

:07:49. > :07:51.gone by when I haven't thought of him in one way, shape or form. At

:07:52. > :07:54.Christmas time is very tough. There were three brothers,

:07:55. > :08:02.Lee was nine when David disappeared. He was my older brother commie

:08:03. > :08:06.looked out for me, a role model. All that is gone.

:08:07. > :08:08.The boys were seen playing on a frozen lake

:08:09. > :08:10.near their home in Chelmsley Wood and a policeman

:08:11. > :08:24.was abandoned at the petrol station. a christmas present the day before,

:08:25. > :08:26.Over the years police have dug and made arrests,

:08:27. > :08:29.questioning child killer Brian Field in prison.

:08:30. > :08:41.There could be one person responsible for their disappearance

:08:42. > :08:45.and it will be several who know what happened to them. My appeal today is

:08:46. > :08:50.to anyone who knows anything about what happened to the boys to come

:08:51. > :08:53.forward and tell us what they know. That bit of information could be the

:08:54. > :08:58.difference between finding him and putting him to rest my family been

:08:59. > :09:01.able to move on, have somewhere to go and put flowers down and

:09:02. > :09:02.celebrate his birthday. Stuff that we don't have the moment, have

:09:03. > :09:05.nothing. It's an enduring mystery,

:09:06. > :09:08.and for the family an open wound The police have released new CCTV

:09:09. > :09:15.images of men they want to trace, as they continue to hunt the killer

:09:16. > :09:17.of Hereford father Christian Bagley. It's 18 months since the 30-year-old

:09:18. > :09:20.was stabbed on a footpath The images show two men

:09:21. > :09:25.police want to speak to. Detectives say they're convinced

:09:26. > :09:26.somebody in Hereford Three men have been found guilty

:09:27. > :09:33.of raping six vulnerable teenage girls in Coventry,

:09:34. > :09:35.after befriending them on Facebook. Waqaar Khan, Kadeem Bourne

:09:36. > :09:42.and Kenan Kelly were part of a gang of men who were said to have formed

:09:43. > :09:47.a close loyal bond with each other. They were also found guilty,

:09:48. > :09:49.alongside Marcus Woolcock and Zahid Chaudhary,

:09:50. > :09:52.of human trafficking. Our Special correspondent

:09:53. > :09:54.Peter Wilson is at Leamington So Peter, I gather this has been

:09:55. > :10:12.a very complex case. trial that lasted nearly two months

:10:13. > :10:21.and the jury have heard some simply harrowing evidence. The younger

:10:22. > :10:26.girls in the victims, are aged between 15-17, the majority of them

:10:27. > :10:31.were underage though. They were targeted by social media and taken

:10:32. > :10:35.to isolated spots in Coventry and abused. We've spoken to a relative

:10:36. > :10:36.of one of those girls and for legal reasons, we are protecting his

:10:37. > :10:40.identity. They are despicable rats,

:10:41. > :10:43.they are out there prowling though social media,

:10:44. > :10:45.preying on vulnerable girls and just abusing the life out of them

:10:46. > :10:47.for their own satisfaction and videoing them for

:10:48. > :10:49.their own gratification. They just treat them

:10:50. > :11:03.like pieces of meat. What of police said? The West

:11:04. > :11:08.Midlands detective who has led this inquiry says that the men involved

:11:09. > :11:10.all saw themselves as Untouchables and he says they have shown no signs

:11:11. > :11:12.of remorse. I would say they are calculated,

:11:13. > :11:15.they are evil, what they have done is purely to get

:11:16. > :11:17.gratification for themselves. There has been in my view no

:11:18. > :11:19.remorse throughout and no empathy of the victims,

:11:20. > :11:21.what they are going through. It has been purely using them

:11:22. > :11:36.to pass around the gang. What more is being done to protect

:11:37. > :11:38.children from exploitation? Despite financial pressures, Coventry City

:11:39. > :11:42.Council say they are investing more money in trying to protect young

:11:43. > :11:44.people and the head of Child services in the city has made this

:11:45. > :11:52.appeal:. and if there are other children out

:11:53. > :11:58.there who have been affected in a similar way, I would encourage

:11:59. > :12:01.them to speak to a trusted adult. Alternatively they could speak

:12:02. > :12:04.to the police or ring All of five men are on remand and

:12:05. > :12:14.will be sentenced in the New Year. Two youth football teams

:12:15. > :12:16.in Birmingham have been banned from wearing their new shirts,

:12:17. > :12:18.because they're sponsored Both companies are owned by parents

:12:19. > :12:22.who have children in the Under ten and under 8's teams,

:12:23. > :12:25.but the Football Association says they breach its rules

:12:26. > :12:26.about appropriate sponsors. But at the minute, they're

:12:27. > :12:35.going nowhere fast. the rules ON the pitch -

:12:36. > :12:45.but everything to do Grassroots football does not get

:12:46. > :12:58.help. Grassroots football

:12:59. > :13:00.is on its knees at the moment. The FA says it gives us money,

:13:01. > :13:03.and the Premier League, So, a thousand pounds donated by

:13:04. > :13:15.the two companies was very welcome. All we want to do is play football

:13:16. > :13:19.it is only a bit of writing our shirts. What are they going to do,

:13:20. > :13:20.banner David Beckham from having tattoos?

:13:21. > :13:25.Strict FA regulations to safeguard children have been in place for many

:13:26. > :13:28.years and unfortunately these to businesses are not seen

:13:29. > :13:45.It wasn't about advertising for us, but about helping in the community.

:13:46. > :13:50.their decision, but when you discover there are other

:13:51. > :13:55.being sponsored by tattoo studios, I think it's very double standards

:13:56. > :14:04.comment on other youth teams across the country and

:14:05. > :14:06.the "offending" clubs should be reported to their respective

:14:07. > :14:12.It also says it sympathises with the Kings Heath Concordes

:14:13. > :14:14.and any other club unsure about appropriate sponsors should

:14:15. > :14:23.Unfortunately the Concordes are grounded

:14:24. > :14:36.They've been suspended by the FA until they can get new shirts.

:14:37. > :14:39.You've been sending us your thoughts on whether it matters which firm's

:14:40. > :14:44.Andrew Webb posted on facebook "It is hypocritical of the FA to ban

:14:45. > :14:46."this sponsorship but be sponsored by McDonald's and

:14:47. > :14:51.But Chris Higgins says "The rules seem perfectly sensible.

:14:52. > :14:54."It's a pity that no one at the club thought about them,

:14:55. > :14:59.And Tracey Roberts thinks it's the FA which is out of order

:15:00. > :15:01.as "it's all about encouraging the children - and be

:15:02. > :15:09.Thanks for joining us on Midlands Today, this

:15:10. > :15:12.is our top story tonight: G4S admits they were surprised by last weeks

:15:13. > :15:14.riots at Birmingham prison - which took 12 hours

:15:15. > :15:19.The shortest day will bring relief to everyone

:15:20. > :15:21.who craves more daylight - but what about the weather?

:15:22. > :15:37.Storm Barbara is a rather big tent. After the relative calm of today we

:15:38. > :15:41.had some sunshine and rain and we are now hoping for a quiet and

:15:42. > :15:42.peaceful Christmas, but you may be disappointed, I'm afraid. Details

:15:43. > :15:45.later. More than six months

:15:46. > :15:47.after travelling to Downing Street, to ask for NHS funding

:15:48. > :15:50.for his physiotherapy, Ben Baddeley's family say they've

:15:51. > :15:52.still not been offered any financial help to pay for the

:15:53. > :15:54.treatment he needs. The 12-year-old had an operation

:15:55. > :15:57.to help him walk two years ago but as the money was raised

:15:58. > :16:00.privately, his family were told they had to continue

:16:01. > :16:02.to pay for his aftercare. Crafted ceramic decorations

:16:03. > :16:12.at Wedgwood in Stoke-on-Trent but there's only one Christmas

:16:13. > :16:26.present Ben Baddeley and his family There's a lot more potential of that

:16:27. > :16:29.Ben has, but that will only be the case if he gets the treatment. If he

:16:30. > :16:30.doesn't, it will be a waste of time. Two years ago, 12-year-old Ben

:16:31. > :16:32.from Newcastle-under-Lyme He had difficulty concentrating,

:16:33. > :16:35.the hand that is steady today After a Midlands Today viewer helped

:16:36. > :16:40.to pay for spinal surgery, 50,000 pounds was raised

:16:41. > :16:43.by his family for specialist post operation physiotherapy,

:16:44. > :16:44.his family took his case to Downing Street and to the NHS

:16:45. > :16:47.in Staffordshire they want the specialist treatment his

:16:48. > :16:55.surgeon has recommended. it would work with the family

:16:56. > :16:59.to ensure Ben received the treatment that met his assessed needs,

:17:00. > :17:02.something they have said again in a statement, but the family say

:17:03. > :17:09.no treatment has been given. Christmas cards designed by Ben,

:17:25. > :17:29.She is the closest one to us, the closest in our area and she's 90

:17:30. > :17:36.minutes away. So by the time we've paid her travel costs and then an

:17:37. > :17:45.hour with Ben, it is ?150 an hour and he needs about three times a

:17:46. > :17:46.week. I like pop therapy, because it is a pain if I don't

:17:47. > :17:49.As the new year approaches, Ben and his family say they won't

:17:50. > :17:52.give up, but they are desperate for the funding to help him.

:17:53. > :17:54.More than 5,000 staff at the Staffordshire digger

:17:55. > :17:56.maker JCB have been given a Christmas bonus.

:17:57. > :18:00.Staff at all 11 of the firm's plants in the UK are being given an extra

:18:01. > :18:04.Last November, they agreed to work shorter hours in order to prevent

:18:05. > :18:07.But the company has since launched a new excavator with hundreds

:18:08. > :18:18.of new orders, and created 85 new jobs at Uttoxeter.

:18:19. > :18:27.In 2017, the market still seems quite challenging. It is our job to

:18:28. > :18:28.grow the business again and with the actions we have in place and the

:18:29. > :18:30.team we have, I think we can. In sport, Coventry City have

:18:31. > :18:32.appointed Russell Slade He's previously been

:18:33. > :18:35.in charge of several clubs, including Cardiff City

:18:36. > :18:36.in the Championship. Last month, he left

:18:37. > :18:38.Charlton Athletic. The deal is initially

:18:39. > :18:40.until the end of this season. The Sky Blues are second

:18:41. > :18:44.bottom of League One. Now when the Olympic Gold Swimmer

:18:45. > :18:46.Adam Peaty tweeted his love for Jaykae in the summer,

:18:47. > :18:49.not many of us would've known But the Birmingham Grime artist

:18:50. > :18:54.is on the cusp of success - as he gets ready to perform

:18:55. > :18:57.a headline gig in He remains unsigned,

:18:58. > :19:00.but thanks to social media, is still able to make a living out

:19:01. > :19:03.of what he loves. Here's Our Arts Reporter,

:19:04. > :19:11.Satnam Rana. His video has had over

:19:12. > :19:34.one million hits online, I started clashing here, I start

:19:35. > :19:39.writing lyrics in the flats, when we was kids. I used to do loads of

:19:40. > :19:40.things. Everything groaned from here for me. -- everything grew from

:19:41. > :19:42.here. JayKae's lyrics are inspired

:19:43. > :19:44.by his life experiences. And it's this which

:19:45. > :19:53.appeals to his fans Anyone who can understand not having

:19:54. > :19:59.the finer things in life when you are younger going the way struggle,

:20:00. > :20:01.and Adam in poverty necessarily, but every is a struggle for some people,

:20:02. > :20:05.people like me. But music was put on hold after one

:20:06. > :20:08.of his best friends, fellow artsist Joshua Ribera

:20:09. > :20:17.also known as Depzman, I started drinking and being a

:20:18. > :20:24.nuisance and I had a fight and went to prison. Music started for me from

:20:25. > :20:32.when I got out. It took me away from music for a bit. I fixed up and

:20:33. > :20:33.carried on doing what I need to be doing.

:20:34. > :20:35.Despite not being signed to a label, Jaykae is determined

:20:36. > :20:50.Eye dropper videos, I get shows, I put the monks fortify and I choose.

:20:51. > :20:52.Although Grime has seen mainstream success with likes of Lady Leshut,

:20:53. > :20:55.Jaykae is one arsist who aspired to make it big -

:20:56. > :21:02.To music of a very different kind now, and the distinctive

:21:03. > :21:07.Coventry's has been performing in the city for seventy

:21:08. > :21:09.years, but only started because of the Welsh!

:21:10. > :21:18.For seventy years, the city of Coventry choir has

:21:19. > :21:28.It started way back in 1946 at a former coal mine.

:21:29. > :21:31.Many of the men having migrated to the city for work.

:21:32. > :21:41.Mostly Welsh men came from the valleys to working Coventry at the

:21:42. > :21:49.colliery and they formed a choir. They got others to join and it

:21:50. > :21:55.became a very cross section choir. We've got doctors, engineers,

:21:56. > :21:56.teachers, a very cross section. It nearly folded in its first year when

:21:57. > :21:58.tragedy struck at the mine. long after and is now

:21:59. > :22:12.the longest serving member. The original name for this choir was

:22:13. > :22:15.in Welsh and it was where the disaster was the colliery. It killed

:22:16. > :22:18.off the musical director and a number of people in the choir.

:22:19. > :22:20.The average age of the men here is in the mid-seventies,

:22:21. > :22:24.and they're always on the look out for new members.

:22:25. > :22:29.We want to show others how special we and encourage others to come and

:22:30. > :22:34.join us, because we have such a fantastic time. It is great for

:22:35. > :22:36.learning, social aspect having fun, confidence building, you name it, it

:22:37. > :22:40.is a great thing to do. The city of Coventry

:22:41. > :22:42.Male Voice Choir has performed all over the country

:22:43. > :22:45.including at the Royal Albert Hall, and members are hoping to keep

:22:46. > :22:47.up their performance portfolio Now, just last month,

:22:48. > :22:56.BBC WM's Richie Anderson was put through the ringer,

:22:57. > :22:59.as he undertook a 250 mile tandem ride, with selected "friends",

:23:00. > :23:01.raising money for Children in Need. It was tough going at times,

:23:02. > :23:04.but he powered through, inspired by the amazing children

:23:05. > :23:06.at Edward's Trust, So we sent him back to report

:23:07. > :23:21.on his progress - he went by car. Last time I was here

:23:22. > :23:30.the people I met blew me away. I can't wait to see them all again.

:23:31. > :23:32.I was in tears the last time I was here, because the stories are so

:23:33. > :23:51.incredible. Hello, everyone! In my darkest times on the bike he

:23:52. > :23:58.was thinking about their stores that kept me going. Damaged a raise? 6

:23:59. > :24:10.million! I raised ?10,000. One of the story that touched me the

:24:11. > :24:17.most was eight-year-old Liam who lost his dad to haemophilia. What

:24:18. > :24:20.you do here? We talk about it and play games so we don't get that

:24:21. > :24:24.upset, we just speak about it and then we forget about it a little

:24:25. > :24:32.bit. But you can never really forget what has happened. It is like

:24:33. > :24:36.something that is a stain on you. In the Midlands, Children in Need

:24:37. > :24:43.raised ?4 million. One of the councillors he says the money makes

:24:44. > :24:46.a real difference. With things being tougher than many, people haven't

:24:47. > :24:52.got money to give, so people like you coming along was amazing. That

:24:53. > :24:56.was incredible. And thanks to you and your donations, Children in Need

:24:57. > :25:00.is able to fund some incredible things, such as brief councillors

:25:01. > :25:04.and just the chance for these young people to be around others in the

:25:05. > :25:08.same boat as them. It is a job well done.

:25:09. > :25:10.Warnings of stormy weather on the way.

:25:11. > :25:18.But at least we're at the shortest day.

:25:19. > :25:25.Longer days from now on until the summer solstice. But Italy prolong

:25:26. > :25:31.the agony if that is all filled with bad weather. But this week they will

:25:32. > :25:33.only be longer buy a fewer seconds. Today, we welcomed the winter

:25:34. > :25:41.solstice with a bit of rain followed by sunshine. Some beautiful photos.

:25:42. > :25:46.The clouds gathered from the North West and brought us more rain. They

:25:47. > :25:54.cleared away at the end of the day. Looking towards Christmas Day, this

:25:55. > :26:00.is it. Drizzly but dry, cloudy but mild and windy. Ahead of the

:26:01. > :26:08.weekend, this is Friday, Stormer Barbra arrives and it is bringing

:26:09. > :26:12.strong winds and heavy rain. The winds across the Midlands will

:26:13. > :26:18.probably rise to 50 mph north of the region. No warnings at the moment,

:26:19. > :26:23.but that could change. We have a respite on Christmas Eve. Fairly

:26:24. > :26:28.blustery, but settled. Christmas Day, another deep depression to the

:26:29. > :26:40.North West. Temperatures in double figures. Little rain. In sharp

:26:41. > :26:47.contrast for tonight, it is looking quite wintry. Temperatures down to

:26:48. > :26:54.-2 in rural spots. Frost in places in the clear skies. Dry. A crisp

:26:55. > :27:00.starts tomorrow. Sunshine to start. Cloud from time to time and a fewer

:27:01. > :27:06.showers, but mainly dry tomorrow and temperatures up to 7-8 C across the

:27:07. > :27:10.region. Light winds from the South West. The calm before the storm,

:27:11. > :27:16.because on Friday, that is when Stormer Barbra arrives. Temperatures

:27:17. > :27:17.will probably rise by then, but there is rain and all because the

:27:18. > :27:19.winds. On tomorrow's programme, we'll be

:27:20. > :27:21.reporting on a worrying group of attacks on buzzards in

:27:22. > :27:22.Herefordshire. Three birds of prey have been found

:27:23. > :27:26.shot in the county in recent weeks. Now the RSPCA is putting up a reward

:27:27. > :27:31.to try and find the culprit. That's on Midlands Today tomorrow

:27:32. > :27:34.evening at 6.30 with Nick. That's all from me, I'd like to wish

:27:35. > :27:37.you a Happy Christmas. Elizabeth Glinker will be

:27:38. > :27:39.here with your late The roads we walk have demons

:27:40. > :27:59.beneath them... ..and yours have been waiting

:28:00. > :28:04.for a very long time. What is this? We can't do this.

:28:05. > :28:12.Is this supposed to be a game? I thought this was some

:28:13. > :28:14.kind of... What? ..trick. Of course it's not a trick.

:28:15. > :28:16.It's a plan. What's the very worst thing

:28:17. > :28:20.you can do...
