:03:34. > :03:50.A lot of work has been done to clean up the Morda in recent years and

:04:44. > :04:46.We see a lot of kindness around us every day, really,

:04:47. > :04:50.and just to reinforce that and recognise it and celebrate it

:04:51. > :04:54.and encourage people to focus on that rather than negativity

:04:55. > :04:58.and divisiveness that's been characterising our politics lately.

:04:59. > :05:00.We don't really know what's going to happen and it's nice

:05:01. > :05:03.to join together with similar people to build bridges and get

:05:04. > :05:10.There's a lot of suspicion and fear, both in Europe with Brexit and also

:05:11. > :05:17.Trump is, from his personality, a president which we have

:05:18. > :05:20.never experienced before and we don't actually know.

:05:21. > :05:24.In the summer, Ironbridge is packed with tourists and today's winter

:05:27. > :05:34.I have my doubts about whether he's wired up right.

:05:35. > :05:37.Some of the things he says are excellent, but some

:05:38. > :05:39.of the other things, I think he's just gone

:05:40. > :05:44.My view is to give him a bit of time and just see how it goes.

:05:45. > :05:48.We're living in a world that's changing rapidly and all sorts

:05:49. > :05:49.of uncertainties and he's not a politician.

:05:50. > :05:54.Many experts say Pennsysvannia was the state that swung it

:05:55. > :05:58.for Trump, an area suffering from a decline in industry.

:05:59. > :06:02.It's where mum of two Cathy Wardius is from.

:06:03. > :06:06.I think, like most Americans, we're apprehneisve because we don't

:06:07. > :06:09.know what the next four years are going to bring.

:06:10. > :06:12.But then, like I said, I know a lot of really good hard

:06:13. > :06:15.working people who had voted for him who are optimistic that he'll bring

:06:16. > :06:20.jobs back and do the things that he promised.

:06:21. > :06:27.I wonder how they're feeling at the White House right now.

:06:28. > :06:35.I think it's the most scariest thing that I've ever heard of.

:06:36. > :06:38.He's scary because I think if anybody's going to push

:06:39. > :06:40.the button, he's going to be the one to do it.

:06:41. > :06:44.He may have his sceptics, but President Trump gave this message:

:06:45. > :06:48.Together, we will make America great again.

:06:49. > :07:04.Thank you, God bless you and God bless America.

:07:05. > :07:06.A man's appeared before Walsall magistrates charged

:07:07. > :07:09.40-year-old Kulwinder Kaur was found dead

:07:10. > :07:13.at her home, in Gomer Street, in Willenhall, on Wednesday.

:07:14. > :07:16.46-year-old Azad Singh was remanded in custody

:07:17. > :07:20.and is due to appear before Wolverhampton Crown Court on Monday.

:07:21. > :07:24.Police are appealing for witnesses, after a man was arrested

:07:25. > :07:25.on suspicion of robbery, following two incidents

:07:26. > :07:30.The first took place at the BP Garage on Stratford Road in Warwick,

:07:31. > :07:33.where it's alleged an armed man demanded money from the till.

:07:34. > :07:36.Less than half an hour later, an armed man is believed to have

:07:37. > :07:39.demanded cash from the Heart of England Co-op on Church Road

:07:40. > :07:43.A 29-year-old from Leamington Spa has been bailed with conditions

:07:59. > :08:05.Construction work on phase one from London to Birmingham is due

:08:06. > :08:09.The Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says the project should be

:08:10. > :08:13.given royal assent in the next month.

:08:14. > :08:16.This is the real thing, this is the start of

:08:17. > :08:18.the construction of HS2, a huge project that will

:08:19. > :08:20.transform our country, will transform our transport system

:08:21. > :08:21.and will create huge opportunities for people

:08:22. > :08:29.The Labour MEP Sion Simon has formally launched his campaign to be

:08:30. > :08:31.elected West Midlands "Metro Mayor" in just over three months.

:08:32. > :08:33.He told an invited audience at a training centre

:08:34. > :08:36.in Wolverhampton that, if elected, he would fight

:08:37. > :08:37.for fairer Government funding for the West Midlands

:08:38. > :08:41.compared with Scotland, Wales and even other regions of England.

:08:42. > :08:44.Our political editor Patrick Burns is in Central Birmingham for us.

:08:45. > :08:55.So what exactly is he concerned about?

:08:56. > :09:01.is the public spending formula operated by successive governments

:09:02. > :09:05.for 40 years and it means that in Scotland there is an allocation of

:09:06. > :09:12.over ten and a half thousand pounds per head over the past year while

:09:13. > :09:15.here in the Midlands, just ?8,750 and Mr Simon wants it scrapped

:09:16. > :09:18.because it fails to recognise the fact that the population of the

:09:19. > :09:23.Midlands is bigger and makes a bigger contribution to the UK

:09:24. > :09:30.economy than Scotland. I put it to him however that successive

:09:31. > :09:32.governments that shall not the slightest interest in scrapping it

:09:33. > :09:34.because Scotland is a nation whereas the Midlands is merely a region.

:09:35. > :09:36.We pay the same taxes as they do in Scotland, Wales,

:09:37. > :09:39.Northern Ireland and London, but they get much better public

:09:40. > :09:41.services deliberately on purpose, because of this formula,

:09:42. > :09:44.It is not fair that they should have better hospitals

:09:45. > :09:47.and better schools than us, even though we pay the same tax.

:09:48. > :09:53.I just want our fair share of the national pie.

:09:54. > :10:01.Interesting to see that slogan taking back control. Where have we

:10:02. > :10:04.heard that before? How could we possibly forget? Mr Simon says it

:10:05. > :10:08.reflexes determination and as he puts it, we need to seize back

:10:09. > :10:13.control from a Westminster Government that has no plan for

:10:14. > :10:18.Brexit, far less than the challenges that flow from that from our part of

:10:19. > :10:23.the world. There is an irony that a Labour MP who until recently had on

:10:24. > :10:31.his website a statement in support of the Remain vote should now be

:10:32. > :10:33.campaigning under the slogan made famous by the league campaign. When

:10:34. > :10:39.I reminded him of this, he said it was his idea first. -- Leave.

:10:40. > :10:41.I've been campaigning for this for seven years now

:10:42. > :10:43.and throughout that time, my single clear message has been -

:10:44. > :10:46.we need to take back control from London

:10:47. > :10:49.If some other people more recently have appropriated my slogan

:10:50. > :10:51.for their ends, then that's not my problem.

:10:52. > :10:57.How do you see his chances and those of the other candidates? Labourer

:10:58. > :11:02.will see the idea traditional front runners in this part of the country,

:11:03. > :11:06.Conservatives say they only need a 4% swing but with other parties

:11:07. > :11:09.contesting this, it is the real contest and it's more about

:11:10. > :11:13.personalities than most street party political fight because of the very

:11:14. > :11:14.nature of the job. Thank you, Patrick.

:11:15. > :11:16.Thanks for joining us on Midlands Today, still to come

:11:17. > :11:19.on tonight's programm: Searching for his century, Stoke City's Peter

:11:20. > :11:22.Crouch is poised to score his one hundredth Premier League goal.

:11:23. > :11:25.And if you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, I might just

:11:26. > :11:29.But if this is a bit noisy, the weather is

:11:30. > :11:42.They were supposed to make getting about easier,

:11:43. > :11:46.but the so-called shared spaces where kerbs and road

:11:47. > :11:48.markings are removed in some town and city centres,

:11:49. > :11:53.Campaigners for blind people say the concept, widely used

:11:54. > :11:57.They have been discussing their concerns at a special

:11:58. > :12:00.meeting of MPs on the Women and Equalities Committee

:12:01. > :12:03.Here's our transport correspondent, Peter Plisner.

:12:04. > :12:07.Charlotte Nickson and guide dog Layla navigating their way

:12:08. > :12:12.But for them, shared space doesn't make things very easy.

:12:13. > :12:14.This is where she's stops for this crossing.

:12:15. > :12:28.Here Layla gets confused because there's no kurbs and waits

:12:29. > :12:30.for instruction from Charlotte.

:12:31. > :12:32.And it not just Layla who doesn't understand the layout.

:12:33. > :12:35.When we filmed, there were cars and other vehicles everywhere,

:12:36. > :12:37.even on what was supposed to be the pavement.

:12:38. > :12:41.They make it harder for me to get to work, and that's just not fair.

:12:42. > :12:44.They make it impossible for a lot of my blind friends to come

:12:45. > :12:46.and visit me and if they do, we have to make sure

:12:47. > :12:49.there is a sighted person there to help us at all times.

:12:50. > :12:52.The idea of shared space comes from Holland, what happens is,

:12:53. > :12:55.road signs, traffic lights and road markings are removed and drivers

:12:56. > :12:57.don't quite know who actually has priority, and they go slower.

:12:58. > :13:00.But it might be safer for some, but not others.

:13:01. > :13:03.As you get to this side, Peter, it doesn't lead to anywhere.

:13:04. > :13:09.Sarah Gayton from Staffordshrie campaigns on behalf of the blind

:13:10. > :13:11.and partially sighted and she maintains that shared

:13:12. > :13:16.Blind people have real difficulties navigating them because the kerb

:13:17. > :13:19.line is taken away and crossings are taken away.

:13:20. > :13:22.Some zebra crossings are put in, but they're not put in properly.

:13:23. > :13:24.Today, Sarah and others had the chance to speak directly

:13:25. > :13:27.to MPs on the Women and Equalities Select Committee

:13:28. > :13:29.as it held an outreach meeting in Birmingham.

:13:30. > :13:31.The committee is currently investigating the build environment

:13:32. > :13:39.You can read all the papers you like, but until you have the people

:13:40. > :13:43.sat in front of you telling you exactly how it feels to not be

:13:44. > :13:46.able to move around their city centre or that they can't get

:13:47. > :13:49.a house that's suitable for them to live in,

:13:50. > :13:52.you don't really get the human feeling of it.

:13:53. > :13:57.Coventry City Council maintains that its shared space is safe

:13:58. > :13:58.and that schemes developed in consultation with

:13:59. > :14:05.But despite concerns of some, the use of shared space is growing

:14:06. > :14:17.It's been announced that the by-election

:14:18. > :14:19.to vote for the next MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central will be

:14:20. > :14:24.It comes after the resignation of Tristram Hunt,

:14:25. > :14:26.who announced his resignation last week to become Director of

:14:27. > :14:31.Mr Hunt is expected to leave the House of

:14:32. > :14:36.Conductors on London Midland trains are to vote on strike action.

:14:37. > :14:38.The rail union, RMT, said it was balloting its members

:14:39. > :14:41.over the proposed imposition of security contractors on trains.

:14:42. > :14:44.The union said the company's move was made without agreement.

:14:45. > :14:46.London Midland said it was "very disappointed" the RMT

:14:47. > :14:56.Now here's a tale of far-away seas - with links to

:14:57. > :14:59.In 1914, the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton gathered

:15:00. > :15:03.28 men to explore the Antarctric - three

:15:04. > :15:07.His ship, the Endurance, was destroyed, but there was just

:15:08. > :15:09.about time to recover a collection of incredible photographs,

:15:10. > :15:14.For the first time, they're on show in Birmingham.

:15:15. > :15:21.Arguably the greatest polar explorer.

:15:22. > :15:24.A man who would not accept he'd be beaten by the elements.

:15:25. > :15:27.The Enduring Eye exhibition is billed as one of the finest

:15:28. > :15:31.photographic records of human survival, documenting his

:15:32. > :15:36.exploration of the Antarctic aboard the ship The Endurance.

:15:37. > :15:39.The idea that Shackleton had was to be the first person to cross

:15:40. > :15:45.He'd been beaten to the first person to reach the Pole by Roald Amundsen

:15:46. > :15:47.and this was the last achievement there could be

:15:48. > :15:53.He also wanted to make a name for himself as being

:15:54. > :15:58.Many of these previously unseen images were captured by ship

:15:59. > :16:00.photographer Frank Hurley, who hoped to earn a small fortune

:16:01. > :16:02.by selling the rights when they returned.

:16:03. > :16:06.When the Endurance started sinking in 1915,

:16:07. > :16:09.he risked injury or worse by plucking glass plated photographs

:16:10. > :16:17.This Hurley image was directly digitised from one of those plates.

:16:18. > :16:21.He chose three men - a geologist, a scientist, and a doctor -

:16:22. > :16:27.And Shackleton wanted all of his men to contribute no

:16:28. > :16:32.But Ernest Shackleton's epic voyage would never had departed,

:16:33. > :16:36.some say, were it not for a Birmingham businesman.

:16:37. > :16:39.Dudley Docker is very well-known locally I think as being a major

:16:40. > :16:41.industrialist of the time, of the early 20th century.

:16:42. > :16:44.Shackleton, like a modern explorer, would look for funds from all sorts

:16:45. > :16:49.of sources and he had inspired Dudley Docker.

:16:50. > :16:55.In today's money, he gave about ?430,000 to support the expidition.

:16:56. > :16:57.The were two more Brummie seamen including James A Mcilroy,

:16:58. > :17:01.who studied medicine at Birmingham University.

:17:02. > :17:04.For the 28 men on board, the wanderlust was lost

:17:05. > :17:08.to the ferociuous cold and thick ice which swallowed the ship.

:17:09. > :17:11.Enduring Eye at the Library of Birmingham continues

:17:12. > :17:24.Stoke City's Peter Crouch is poised to reach a century

:17:25. > :17:29.Yes, he gave us the robot goal celebration and his model wife won

:17:30. > :17:35.But actually Peter Crouch is one of the most down to earth

:17:36. > :17:39.So it will be a very popular moment if he can score his one hundredth

:17:40. > :17:41.Premier League goal this weekend when Stoke City take

:17:42. > :17:54.Peter Crouch is loving his football and who can blame him?

:17:55. > :17:56.He was brought back into the starting line up for Stoke

:17:57. > :17:59.at Christmas and he's scored three goals in five matches since.

:18:00. > :18:02.I looked at where my career was going and thinking,

:18:03. > :18:09.I think now that I've been given this opportunity to play again,

:18:10. > :18:12.I'm loving it, probably more so than when I was 18 months ago

:18:13. > :18:15.and before that period because now I realise how much it means

:18:16. > :18:21.His attributes and his ability to affect games hasn't changed.

:18:22. > :18:24.He's getting on years, he's probably coming

:18:25. > :18:27.towards the end of his career, he knows that.

:18:28. > :18:33.But we haven't seen any diminishing of his qualities at all.

:18:34. > :18:36.The very first Premier League goal came for Aston Villa 15 years ago.

:18:37. > :18:39.The 20-year-old was still growing into his six foot seven frame then

:18:40. > :18:44.and it took a move to Southampton before his career really blossomed.

:18:45. > :18:47.42 England caps and appearances at two World Cups followed.

:18:48. > :18:51.He's scored 36 goals for Stoke since joining them in 2011 but he's

:18:52. > :18:57.The goal for Stoke against Man City was probably the best

:18:58. > :19:03.Headed it down to me and being able to flick it up and volley it.

:19:04. > :19:06.Nine out of ten times they don't get anywhere near the goal.

:19:07. > :19:09.So to see it fly in the top corner was probably the best

:19:10. > :19:14.His wife Abby Clancy won Strictly Come Dancing in 2013

:19:15. > :19:16.and Crouch is also famous for his goal celebration moves.

:19:17. > :19:20.So will we see the robot again for the first time in a decade

:19:21. > :19:26.I've had so many people say to me, if you get the 100th,

:19:27. > :19:28.you've got to do it, you've got to do it.

:19:29. > :19:31.The pressure's taking its toll, let's put it that way.

:19:32. > :19:37.He's clearly a popular member of the Stoke City squad

:19:38. > :19:40.and would love to play on until he's 40.

:19:41. > :19:43.So we could see that Peter Crouch goal celebration plenty more times

:19:44. > :19:51.And you can see the full interview with Peter Crouch on Football Focus

:19:52. > :19:56.And he's about to get a new team mate.

:19:57. > :20:03.Saido Berahino set to move up the M6 from West Bromwich Albion.

:20:04. > :20:05.Yes, Albion have accepted a bid from Stoke for their striker.

:20:06. > :20:09.Berahino is still only 23 but he's being trying to leave

:20:10. > :20:14.His attitude has been questioned at Albion

:20:15. > :20:22.For Albion it's one in and one out as they've completed the signing

:20:23. > :20:24.of midfielder Jake Livermore for ?10 million

:20:25. > :20:32.He's had his problems, notably the loss of

:20:33. > :20:39.But Tony Pulis says Livermore is back to his best.

:20:40. > :20:41.Having gone to Hull, the tragedy that followed him around

:20:42. > :20:46.We played him twice this season and he was exceptional in both games.

:20:47. > :20:50.He looks as though he's getting his form back and he's just 27.

:20:51. > :20:59.We think it's a really, really good time.

:21:00. > :21:01.Onto tennis and another fantastic victory for Birmingham's Dan Evans

:21:02. > :21:09.Yes, recently dropped by his sponsor he had to stock up

:21:10. > :21:14.But it's working he's through to the fourth

:21:15. > :21:17.round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

:21:18. > :21:20.He beat Australia's Bernard Tomic in straight sets 7-5 7-6 7-6.

:21:21. > :21:22.And he played some scintillating tennis.

:21:23. > :21:25.This 25 shot rally in the final tie break arguably the pint

:21:26. > :21:31.His winner even drew applause from his opponent.

:21:32. > :21:34.Moments later, he'd earned himself three match points.

:21:35. > :21:38.He was receiving serve but he only needed one match point.

:21:39. > :21:40.Evans was very emotional at this point.

:21:41. > :21:43.It was due to losing a former coach to cancer last year.

:21:44. > :21:46.He said afterwards he wised that Belgian Julien Hofferlin could have

:21:47. > :21:52.He always said I could do it, so obviously, you know,

:21:53. > :21:56.he always said I should be playing top 40 tennis and in the grand slams

:21:57. > :22:08.Evans plays the 12th seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga from France

:22:09. > :22:27.A singer songwriter making music in her bedroom and ends up along the

:22:28. > :22:31.stars of LA. She has attracted quite a following on social media and has

:22:32. > :22:37.been nominated for a prestigious American music award and Emma could

:22:38. > :22:38.be sharing the winning platform with Adele and Ellie Goulding, the only

:22:39. > :22:41.other solo female British singers. From Coventry to Los Angeles,

:22:42. > :22:44.that's where Emma McGann is going. She performs from this converted

:22:45. > :22:47.bedroom at her home in Coventry, and is delighted to be nominated

:22:48. > :23:03.for America's iHeart I was super surprised, it feels like

:23:04. > :23:09.a dream. The nominations have come at a point which is already really

:23:10. > :23:15.exciting. The awards will be broadcast across this state in

:23:16. > :23:16.March. It will be a star studded event and we can wave Emma to walk

:23:17. > :23:17.the red carpet. Last year Justin Bieber

:23:18. > :23:19.was the overall winner, and Adele and Ellie Goulding have

:23:20. > :23:31.nominations this year. With Adele and especially Ellie

:23:32. > :23:39.Goulding, I would let them as my inspirations. To be on a pie with

:23:40. > :23:47.them at the same award show is insane. It's really insane. As well

:23:48. > :23:51.as being busy with the music awards, Emma is experimenting with

:23:52. > :23:54.cutting-edge technology. The plan is too great a music video using

:23:55. > :23:57.virtual reality. It will be the first of its kind in this industry.

:23:58. > :23:59.K, guys. It wouldn't be possible

:24:00. > :24:01.without the help of her boyfriend James, who's the driving force

:24:02. > :24:10.behind all the technology. The main thing idea is our deal but

:24:11. > :24:14.with Emma's broadcasting, I have dabbled individually and lighting

:24:15. > :24:16.and anything to do with computers, anything to improve the broadcast.

:24:17. > :24:19.Emma's been been nominated in the social media category

:24:20. > :24:21.from now until then she's drumming up support amongst

:24:22. > :24:28.Thank you for tuning in and I will see you later on tonight for another

:24:29. > :24:30.broadcast. Goodbye. Finally, the sun made

:24:31. > :24:34.a welcome appearance today. Rebecca has the forecast,

:24:35. > :24:36.but she's somewhere a little different this evening

:24:37. > :24:53.at the Genting Arena. There is something special about to

:24:54. > :24:58.happen this year. You wouldn't catch me doing any of this but one person

:24:59. > :25:03.you might is Chris. You do this, what's wrong with you? I've been

:25:04. > :25:10.doing it from an early age and it's stuck with me ever since. What is

:25:11. > :25:16.Arena Cross? Its motocross. We do tricks, fireworks and everything.

:25:17. > :25:23.You don't actually do this? I stick to the racing. This looks dangerous,

:25:24. > :25:27.is it? It can be, but we really experience and we try not to crash

:25:28. > :25:32.too often. Why should people come down and watch it this weekend?

:25:33. > :25:38.There will be tricks and erasing, fireworks and lots of entertainment.

:25:39. > :25:42.We have to ask the boss man if we can get them to be quiet because

:25:43. > :25:45.I've got to do the weather forecast. If you fancy coming down here that's

:25:46. > :25:51.all well and good about the weather is looking too bad this weekend. It

:25:52. > :25:57.has been a glorious day today, clear blue skies. Our temperatures were

:25:58. > :26:00.only at five Celsius. Through the weekend, we will get much colder air

:26:01. > :26:05.from linear continents. That is going to cool things down. We saw

:26:06. > :26:10.that across the southern half of the region last night. A chilly weekend

:26:11. > :26:14.but some sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud through this

:26:15. > :26:20.weekend. We have got much colder air working its way across as from the

:26:21. > :26:23.east. The map will turn very blue as we head through tonight because

:26:24. > :26:28.temperatures are dropping like a stone. It will start to creep its

:26:29. > :26:33.way northwards, cold right the way across the board. Temperatures

:26:34. > :26:38.dipping two minus five. In some sheltered rural spots, it could get

:26:39. > :26:42.lower than that. Widespread frost and in eastern parts of the region,

:26:43. > :26:48.mist and fog patches developing and they could be clearing into the day

:26:49. > :26:51.tomorrow. High pressure in charge, little movement and breeze.

:26:52. > :26:56.Continuing to see those cold conditions through the morning, a

:26:57. > :27:01.frosty start and a very cold day indeed tomorrow. Still an easterly

:27:02. > :27:06.breeze so temperatures ranging from between one and three Celsius. There

:27:07. > :27:10.will be lots of lovely sunshine. We get cloud coming in from the east as

:27:11. > :27:14.we head through the day, variable and then applied a black cloud

:27:15. > :27:19.should help with temperatures as we head Saturday night into Sunday.

:27:20. > :27:22.Another very chilly night, another widespread frost right the way

:27:23. > :27:28.across the region, temperatures dipping down to around 8-1 or minus

:27:29. > :27:34.three. We could see some drizzle from that cloud which could tend to

:27:35. > :27:39.sleet or snow. Sunday -- Monday is more of the same. Stays that way as

:27:40. > :27:41.we head into the new working week. I am going to go and learn some

:27:42. > :27:42.tricks. Not really. Nicola Beckford will be

:27:43. > :27:47.with you at 10.30 for the late news.
