:01:18. > :01:20.the public, after a man was stabbed to death on a bus

:01:32. > :01:40.in the Handsworth area of Birmingham this afternoon,

:01:41. > :01:42.police are trying to work out why a man was stabbed to death

:01:43. > :01:45.while travelling on a bus Police believe the two men

:01:46. > :01:49.didn't know each other, They say the victim

:01:50. > :01:54.was already on the bus. Further along the route, the other

:01:55. > :01:57.man got on and sat opposite At some point, a verbal

:01:58. > :02:00.altercation started which A knife was produced

:02:01. > :02:05.and the victim was stabbed. When emergency services got

:02:06. > :02:08.to Rookery Road at around a quarter to 11 last night,

:02:09. > :02:11.they found the man, a 35-year-old from Smethwick,

:02:12. > :02:14.slumped over one of the seats We know there were five people

:02:15. > :02:21.sat around with the two males on the top deck,

:02:22. > :02:24.so we managed to speak to one of the people who very

:02:25. > :02:26.kindly stayed behind. The other four people

:02:27. > :02:28.left the bus shortly It might be that they didn't realise

:02:29. > :02:39.how serious the matter was and just wanted to get out of the way,

:02:40. > :02:42.which is perfectly understandable. However, I would ask for them

:02:43. > :02:44.to come forward to speak Good afternoon,

:02:45. > :02:47.ladies and gentlemen. Extra patrols were added to buses

:02:48. > :02:51.across the city today, including the 11A -

:02:59. > :03:01.from people living close by. You know, what happens

:03:02. > :03:08.if I'm on the bus with my children one day and then,

:03:09. > :03:16.you know, someone gets stopped? Everybody on this road,

:03:17. > :03:21.they're worried about, even for the businesses

:03:22. > :03:23.as well, you know? If you can't be safe on the bus,

:03:24. > :03:28.where can you be safe? Police says they're looking

:03:29. > :03:31.for a black man, aged between 25 and 30 with short dreadlocks,

:03:32. > :03:33.in connection with the murder. He was last seen wearing a puffa

:03:34. > :03:36.jacket, had headphones over a baseball cap and was carrying

:03:37. > :03:38.a duffel type bag. Ben Sidwell, BBC Midlands

:03:39. > :03:40.Today, Birmingham. Worcestershire Children's Services

:03:41. > :03:42.has been rated inadequate. A report from Ofsted showed

:03:43. > :03:44.vulnerable children are at risk It's the fourth local authority

:03:45. > :03:50.in the West Midlands to have their Children's Services

:03:51. > :03:54.department rated inadequate. Worcestershire have

:03:55. > :04:04.said they are sorry - and will spend

:04:05. > :04:05.an extra ?3.5 million Tom Turrell has been speaking

:04:06. > :04:18.to the people in charge It is the job at the Children's

:04:19. > :04:20.Services is department here at Worcestershire County Council to

:04:21. > :04:24.protect the most honourable residents in the county, children.

:04:25. > :04:28.I'm talking about children who are potentially in foster care, have

:04:29. > :04:32.been adopted, potentially who have lived with parents who are violent.

:04:33. > :04:36.Today we learned that Government inspectors, Ofsted, rated this

:04:37. > :04:43.department as inadequate. It said that the children here were at risk.

:04:44. > :04:45.I put it to the chief executive of Worcestershire County Council that

:04:46. > :04:49.we needed our response. The thing I would like to say first and foremost

:04:50. > :04:54.is sorry to those children's families who feel they been let down

:04:55. > :04:57.by the services or feel disappointed in terms of those services. My

:04:58. > :05:01.commitment is to absolutely ensure that we pick up the pace of that

:05:02. > :05:05.improvement plan, real confidence that the leadership we put in place

:05:06. > :05:09.last year is the right leadership, Ofsted have said that as well. And

:05:10. > :05:11.things we're put in place, single multi-agencies focus is the right

:05:12. > :05:23.things as well. The County Council say a high

:05:24. > :05:29.turnover of staff has not helped, possibly by low pay and the

:05:30. > :05:33.pressures of the job. They also say they are hiring too many agency

:05:34. > :05:38.staff by third parties and that is not helping. And the demand for

:05:39. > :05:43.children services is the rise. They say they are putting the problem

:05:44. > :05:45.right, investing ?3.5 million extra to fix this, but the NSPCC says the

:05:46. > :05:48.situation isn't good enough. To get "inadequate"

:05:49. > :05:49.on Child Protection, on your work with care leavers,

:05:50. > :05:53.on your work with children in care and on your overall leadership

:05:54. > :05:56.is obviously a pretty damning indictment, so lots more work

:05:57. > :06:02.for Worcestershire to do and our view is keep

:06:03. > :06:04.the focus on the child, keep the focus on outcomes

:06:05. > :06:07.from the child and learn from other authorities

:06:08. > :06:09.where they have been able to turn Councils, businesses,

:06:10. > :06:28.the BBC even fails at what it The problem is, when it is the

:06:29. > :06:29.children services department here at Worcestershire, it leaves the most

:06:30. > :06:32.honourable in society at risk. "If your child's life depended

:06:33. > :06:34.on it, you would do it, too." The words of a young mother who's

:06:35. > :06:37.received abuse online, after posting video of her giving

:06:38. > :06:39.crucial physiotherapy Sam Carrier's daughter Daisy

:06:40. > :06:42.has cystic fibrosis - and needs a type of vigorous

:06:43. > :06:44.massaging called She put video of the technique

:06:45. > :06:48.on social media, to try to raise public awareness of the condition -

:06:49. > :06:50.which affects more than But the pictures have

:06:51. > :07:07.sparked hatred and abuse. So you do it in a cupped position

:07:08. > :07:08.with your hand to try and create a pocket of air. It doesn't hurt her

:07:09. > :07:09.at all. It's called percussion and experts

:07:10. > :07:12.say it can be the difference between life and death

:07:13. > :07:14.for 15-week-old Daisy. She has cystic fibrosis

:07:15. > :07:18.and the physio her Mum Sam gives her twice a day

:07:19. > :07:20.helps break up mucus on her chest which could become

:07:21. > :07:30.infected and deadly. The first time we started doing

:07:31. > :07:35.this, she was actually three weeks old and they came to our house to

:07:36. > :07:41.show us and they started doing the percussion and I just cried, it's

:07:42. > :07:45.devastating to see this is what you've got to try and do to keep

:07:46. > :07:48.your children a life. She is happy all the time. She is just a smiley,

:07:49. > :07:48.smiley baby. Daisy was diagnosed with cystic

:07:49. > :07:52.fibrosis just a few weeks It was Christmas Eve that Sam

:07:53. > :07:59.decided to post a physio session with her Facebook page,

:08:00. > :08:01.in a bid to raise But by Boxing Day

:08:02. > :08:13.the trolling had begun. It's had loads of views and shares

:08:14. > :08:18.and that we started getting nasty messages, started getting death

:08:19. > :08:23.threats saying we should be killed, lots of foul language which I cannot

:08:24. > :08:24.repeat. We got the told we were child abusers and we were going to

:08:25. > :08:25.break her ribs. She's never replied to the trollers,

:08:26. > :08:27.except to forward details of cystic fibrosis -

:08:28. > :08:29.which affects one in Historically, half of all children

:08:42. > :08:44.Midlands Today, in Dudley. There's been a lot of support

:08:45. > :08:48.for Sam from many of you. Kat Cassidy posted on our

:08:49. > :08:51.Midlands Today Facebook page, she and her husband used to do

:08:55. > :08:57.doing what you are doing "and don't worry about

:08:58. > :08:59.the ignorant people jumping A cancer surgeon has pleaded not

:09:00. > :09:21.guilty to fraud after claiming that he had performed 88

:09:22. > :09:25.keyhole surgery operations. Sudip Sarker was alleged to have

:09:26. > :09:27.made the false claim during an interview for a consultant

:09:28. > :09:30.job, at the Alexandra Hospital Mr Sarker was suspended a year later

:09:31. > :09:38.and eventually dismissed, following concerns

:09:39. > :09:42.about his surgical ability. Leroy Sterling strangled Wendy Mann,

:09:43. > :09:49.his former partner, simply because he couldn't cope

:09:50. > :09:52.with her having a new lover. At Wolverhampton Crown Court,

:09:53. > :09:55.Sterling was jailed for life. Detectives have described

:09:56. > :09:57.their investigation as complex. They've also apologised

:09:58. > :09:59.because another man spent almost three months in custody charged

:10:00. > :10:01.with Wendy Mann's murder - Here's our Black Country

:10:02. > :10:06.reporter, Ben Godfrey. Cold, calculating -

:10:07. > :10:17.a man intent on revenge. He strangled 26-year-old Wendy Mann,

:10:18. > :10:20.the mother of their three children, after they separated and she started

:10:21. > :10:29.seeing another man. It has been a long process getting

:10:30. > :10:32.justice for our sister Wendy. We are happy with the verdict here today

:10:33. > :10:33.and it will bring a sense of closure to our lives.

:10:34. > :10:35.It's August 2015 - Sterling is seen loitering outside

:10:36. > :10:42.Fueled by jealousy, he confronted his former partner and strangled

:10:43. > :10:44.her. He strangled her, dragged her body

:10:45. > :10:47.into her kitchen where Sterling proceeded to mop the floor

:10:48. > :10:49.afterwards, hoping to wipe away Then he calmly headed home -

:10:50. > :10:55.here he is on CCTV images carrying a holdall -

:10:56. > :11:05.he'd snatched his childrens' He admitted no part in this offence

:11:06. > :11:09.and showed no remorse whatsoever for Wendy's death. This was a very

:11:10. > :11:12.complex investigation involving very detailed forensic examinations of

:11:13. > :11:18.the scene. But initially, detectives

:11:19. > :11:20.charged an innocent man. Wendy Mann's lover Trevor Tyndale -

:11:21. > :11:22.seen here leaving court - spent almost three months

:11:23. > :11:24.in custody. It turned out too that Sterling

:11:25. > :11:34.had tried to kill him All of the telephone data and the

:11:35. > :11:40.CCTV evidence available at that early period .22 Trevor to being the

:11:41. > :11:46.person that could be responsible for Wendy's death. Does he deserve an

:11:47. > :11:50.of course he does, we have spoken to him over the intervening months and

:11:51. > :11:52.we have apologised to him. We have supported him through this process.

:11:53. > :11:54.Thanks to forensic evidence then, Sterling has been jailed for life

:11:55. > :11:56.for Wendy Mann's murder and the attempted murder

:11:57. > :12:02.He'll serve at least 21 years behind bars.

:12:03. > :12:07.The verdict will not bring Wendy back, but it will give us some

:12:08. > :12:08.comfort that someone has faced justice for this terrible act and

:12:09. > :12:13.her memory has been honoured. Ben Godfrey, BBC Midlands Today,

:13:11. > :13:16.but almost a month on at the company's depot at Long Marston,

:13:17. > :13:19.it's is busier than ever. This is the train that caught fire

:13:20. > :13:23.undergoing repair work which the man in charge of Vivarail's says should

:13:24. > :13:30.be back on the track by early

:13:31. > :13:37.Spring. The idea of testing a train is to

:13:38. > :13:42.find out how things work. Clearly the fire was a setback. The fire

:13:43. > :13:45.that stop the testing of the new train was caused by a blaze inside

:13:46. > :13:50.one of the engines. This is the engine that caught fire. As you can

:13:51. > :13:53.see, it is pretty burnt out. The investigation is still underway, but

:13:54. > :13:54.it looks like it was caused by a fuel leak.

:13:55. > :13:58.But the delays caused by the fire halted plans to use the new train

:13:59. > :14:01.to help get more people in and out of the Richo Arena in Coventry -

:14:02. > :14:04.today Vivarail were hopeful that could still happen.

:14:05. > :14:12.It will be available to go back in-service on the Coventry line if

:14:13. > :14:13.required. If it is not used there, we will have it operating somewhere

:14:14. > :14:16.else. And undeterred, the company is also

:14:17. > :14:26.developing a hybrid train. We are building a battery test car,

:14:27. > :14:29.which has the capability of running either on battery or hydrate, there

:14:30. > :14:32.are lots of hybrid vehicles now, with battery and engine.

:15:03. > :15:11.This is the Grand Union Canal on the east side of Birmingham.

:15:12. > :15:14.But the team won't be diving the canal.

:15:15. > :15:16.They're going much much deeper, under the canal...

:15:17. > :15:18.into the hidden network of pipes and culvets that

:15:19. > :15:29.Canal and river trust employed divers across the network, across

:15:30. > :15:31.the country, to undertake specialised work for us. There's

:15:32. > :15:33.lots of things for structure under the grounds that a lot of the

:15:34. > :15:34.general public won't know about. Today's dive is about checking

:15:35. > :15:37.on some vital but elderly But the diving will only start once

:15:38. > :15:41.the diver gets down this 15 metre shaft to reach the water

:15:53. > :15:55.that is what will go inside and block off the culvert so they can

:15:56. > :15:59.drain it out and checked the pumps. The diver himself is probably going

:16:00. > :16:07.to be in there about five hours today. Get all the air out of it, it

:18:01. > :18:02.by Kidderminster's Claire Cashmore who has won eight paralympic medals

:18:03. > :18:04.including a gold in Rio. She says great facilities

:18:05. > :18:11.make great swimmers. When there is so much money invested

:18:12. > :18:16.into the pool, you feel that money is being invested in to give because

:18:17. > :18:19.turning up into a bright, fantastic, clean pool really makes a

:18:20. > :18:23.difference, it makes you feel proud to almost be here and you feel like

:18:24. > :18:30.money has been invested into that sport. Just a superb new facility.

:18:31. > :18:33.Not just for our city but for the whole county and region, in fact. It

:18:34. > :18:36.is a competition standard pool. Alongside the 25 metre main pool

:18:37. > :18:41.there's a training pool. The new pool also boasts 284 seats

:18:42. > :18:49.for spectators. Perdiswell also revamped

:18:50. > :18:51.the main sports hall. They've introduced

:18:52. > :18:52.an indoor cycling centre - The age range of users spanned

:18:53. > :18:56.nearly 80 years today. There really is something

:18:57. > :18:57.for everyone. So great news for Worcester -

:18:58. > :19:00.but the wait goes on for Yes, we still haven't

:19:01. > :19:09.even got a date. Birmingham University are building

:19:10. > :19:10.it. from them came just before

:19:11. > :19:19.Christmas which said... Regrettably it is delayed further,

:19:20. > :19:23.they are doing everything they can to finish the building. We might get

:19:24. > :19:28.another update next week, but in the meantime we have to be patient. The

:19:29. > :19:33.region should have 250 metre pools, the Council approved plans to

:19:34. > :19:34.replace the pool in the city centre. In the long-term we will be better

:19:35. > :19:37.off. On to football now. A couple of weeks ago,

:19:38. > :19:40.Dan Scarr was making FA Cup headlines with non-league

:19:41. > :19:41.Stourbridge. And his excellent performances

:19:42. > :19:44.didn't go unnoticed. Today, he began his new

:19:47. > :19:58.for the lifelong Blues fan, He is still looking for his first

:19:59. > :20:01.wind after eight games in charge, but the blues' boss remains upbeat

:20:02. > :20:05.and firmly focused on making plans for the future. He has certainly

:20:06. > :20:11.been busy during the January transfer window. He's made it six of

:20:12. > :20:14.new signings from as far afield as equatorial guinea and is close to

:20:15. > :20:19.home as start Bridge. Dan Scarr will always have good reason to love the

:20:20. > :20:23.FA Cup, because this goal against Wycombe in round not only cast a man

:20:24. > :20:27.of the match performance, it also caught the eye of half a dozen

:20:28. > :20:31.professional clubs. But after a week's trial with West Brom, it was

:20:32. > :20:38.Birmingham City who won the race to him up. It means a lot, being a

:20:39. > :20:43.blues Fan. To be here, training full time with them, couldn't ask for

:20:44. > :20:48.much more, really. It's a bit surreal, hasn't really sunk in yet.

:20:49. > :20:54.So Dan Scarr has packed in his day job as a part personal fitness

:20:55. > :21:02.trainer. He has had goodbye to his friends in Lade, and has jumped up.

:21:03. > :21:08.Full-time pro in the championship. Sad to leave, I had some amazing

:21:09. > :21:12.times with the FA Cup, if I haven't got game still come down to watch

:21:13. > :21:20.them, pop to training. I will never be too far away. His new Permian

:21:21. > :21:26.team-mates include Emilio Nsue, Kevin Fry from the Turkish club. He

:21:27. > :21:33.is an opportunity Dan Scarr could only dream of until now, no surprise

:21:34. > :21:40.to guess his New Year's resolution. A fabulous story. It would be better

:21:41. > :21:46.if he could help his new boss to their first wind.

:21:47. > :21:51.We keep talking about changing the fortune of the players. Some of the

:21:52. > :21:54.players went on to a higher level, we hope he can settle in.

:21:55. > :21:59.Fortunately, his day job was a fitness coach, I think he has an

:22:00. > :22:02.additive vintage on most people. Turning up to training shouldn't be

:22:03. > :22:08.an issue for him, should it? Thank you very much!

:22:09. > :22:11.If you're a music lover and want to see your favourite band,

:22:12. > :22:14.you're likely to have caught them at one of our big live music

:22:15. > :22:17.But where do you go to discover new music?

:22:18. > :22:21.In the '70s and '80s, small venues were all around our region -

:22:22. > :22:24.Those that remain are getting a boost -

:22:25. > :22:28.Our Arts Reporter Satnam Rana joins us from Birmingham City Centre -

:22:29. > :22:48.They are getting ready for a gig here tonight. This venue has been

:22:49. > :22:53.the talk of the BBC radio six music. One radio host has been doing a show

:22:54. > :22:57.from beanie and burn them -- BBC Birmingham. He will be heading down

:22:58. > :22:58.later on. An musical community,

:22:59. > :23:01.not just for new bands but also for groups who,

:23:02. > :23:04.you know, don't they don't play the O2 Arenas or even big 1000-capacity

:23:05. > :23:07.venues, but they play to an audience, a really

:23:08. > :23:08.enthusiastic audience. They might be slightly musically

:23:09. > :23:10.left of centre, but there are no less culturally

:23:11. > :23:12.worthy, I think, so it's great that there's a place

:23:13. > :23:15.that you can see them. Now by bringing his show to the city

:23:16. > :23:19.- Steve Lamacq has also given a platform for some local bands such

:23:20. > :23:21.as Goodnight Lenin - here they are with their most recent

:23:22. > :23:27.video. And I caught up with them ahead

:23:28. > :23:49.of their studio session. It's pretty big for us, we've done

:23:50. > :23:53.some stuff for the BBC before but it's nice to do something national.

:23:54. > :24:00.Steve is a massive name, we listen to the show, when we were hers. He

:24:01. > :24:07.plays awesome music. -- when we were hers. Bit of a legend in the field.

:24:08. > :24:14.What about the people that come to these venues? In 2015, five .5

:24:15. > :24:18.million people across the West Midlands got their music, live

:24:19. > :24:23.music, from small independent venues like this one. But speak to some in

:24:24. > :24:28.coming to the gig tonight. What attracts you to these sort of

:24:29. > :24:31.venues? The independence of the venue, really. It's quite an

:24:32. > :24:37.intimate venue, you can feel like you're around the musicians were

:24:38. > :24:43.playing, and integral part to Birmingham's unity. One of the best

:24:44. > :24:49.record labels in the world are here come a everybody can drink together.

:24:50. > :24:53.You can see a great passion for the live music in the city. It's all

:24:54. > :24:55.about supporting upcoming bands and local venues as well. Sounds great,

:24:56. > :24:57.thank you very much. Let's find out how it's looking

:24:58. > :25:07.for the next few days. Is that Dean going to continue? I'm

:25:08. > :25:13.gathering probably yes. -- that beam? Plenty of sunshine out

:25:14. > :25:18.there, but whether I not he can fight the fog. Dense fog during the

:25:19. > :25:24.morning today, as the day went on or progressed, it started to left and

:25:25. > :25:28.we had glorious sunshine. The frost is down, the fog is returning

:25:29. > :25:32.tonight. We have ideal conditions for that to form, clearer skies and

:25:33. > :25:38.freezing temperatures. Those temperatures. To pick up towards the

:25:39. > :25:45.end of the week. In the meantime, it will be utterly cold. On Thursday,

:25:46. > :25:50.the winds start to veer southeasterly. We have warnings in

:25:51. > :25:55.place for fog and ice. Dense patches once again, tricky conditions,

:25:56. > :26:01.driving conditions into the more. Let's look at it what's happening

:26:02. > :26:04.this evening. The fog began to form, more prominent sports the

:26:05. > :26:10.southeastern corner of the region. We could get more frost,

:26:11. > :26:14.temperatures will fall to around minus one Celsius, but most places

:26:15. > :26:19.where there is cloud, the values will remain above freezing. It will

:26:20. > :26:23.be a dry night. Frog and frost, greeting us to start the day

:26:24. > :26:27.tomorrow. During the morning, gradually starting to lift. Western

:26:28. > :26:30.half of the region that sees the best of the sunshine through the

:26:31. > :26:35.morning. In the East, we start to see another layer of cloud living in

:26:36. > :26:41.from that direction. They'll here for most of the day, it even once

:26:42. > :26:45.the fog has dispersed. Temperatures rising to between five Celsius to

:26:46. > :26:50.around seven or eight Celsius towards the southwest, with a breeze

:26:51. > :26:54.coming in at a moderate speed. Tomorrow night is a different story.

:26:55. > :26:57.We're not looking how much fog at all and that is because the cloud

:26:58. > :27:00.will start to stretch across the region. It will hold those

:27:01. > :27:03.temperatures to above freezing in some parts, but generally speaking,

:27:04. > :27:10.because the air is so cold, below freezing. Widespread frost as we

:27:11. > :27:11.head into the day on Thursday. Chilly indeed.

:27:12. > :27:13.Tomorrow, we'll be meeting the students from all over

:27:14. > :27:16.the world, who're travelling to Coventry to learn how

:27:17. > :27:19.Their teacher has 30 years experience protecting the likes

:27:20. > :27:25.of Princess Diana along with the Queen Mother -

:27:26. > :27:31.It all started with the Birmingham pub bombings when a lot of us were

:27:32. > :27:35.taken from CID to protection work and it went on from there. I was

:27:36. > :27:39.lucky enough to be involved with the protection of some of the royal

:27:40. > :27:43.family. Princess Diana and the Queen Mother Tomic particularly when they

:27:44. > :27:47.were visiting the Midlands. That is on tomorrow's programme. We will be

:27:48. > :27:55.back tonight You might get the impression

:27:56. > :27:57.that history is just a record Very often,

:27:58. > :28:04.the line between fact and fiction In this series, I'm exploring how

:28:05. > :28:11.three turning points in our history have been manipulated to become

:28:12. > :28:24.our greatest historical legends. I want to be entertained.

:28:25. > :28:29.Entertain me. It's the last chance

:28:30. > :28:44.to impress the judges. What have you been up to?

:28:45. > :28:47.Something grubby?
