:00:00. > :00:00.Hello and welcome to Midlands Today. - so it's goodbye from me -

:00:00. > :00:00.The headlines tonight: The new Labour MP for

:00:07. > :00:09.Stoke-on-Trent Central, Gareth Snell, promises

:00:10. > :00:16.to deliver on Brexit, education and homes.

:00:17. > :00:21.Whatever be doing now as a member of parliament is going around the

:00:22. > :00:24.country and selling Stoke-on-Trent is a wonderful place that it it.

:00:25. > :00:28.But what now for Ukip as they fail in their bid to turn Stoke Central

:00:29. > :00:34.Tributes paid to Tahnie Martin, the 29-year-old died

:00:35. > :00:39.after being hit by falling debris, during storm force

:00:40. > :00:50.If's terrible. She's 29, she has not seen the world or dumb things. You

:00:51. > :00:52.could cry, couldn't you? -- or done things.

:00:53. > :00:55.Tricky times for our Championship clubs, with all four West Midlands

:00:56. > :00:58.The delicate art of embroidery, a world-renowned Warwickshire

:00:59. > :01:01.seamstress encouraging a new generation.

:01:02. > :01:03.And things have been very different today with the weather,

:01:04. > :01:06.but it's a return to wet and windy conditions

:01:07. > :01:25.Standing up for Stoke-on Trent, that's the promise from the City's

:01:26. > :01:28.newest MP, Gareth Snell, who held the Labour seat

:01:29. > :01:31.of Stoke-on-Trent Central with just over 7,800 votes.

:01:32. > :01:37.But the party's majority was cut by almost half, to 2,620 votes.

:01:38. > :01:41.Ukip's leader Paul Nuttall came second with 5,233 votes,

:01:42. > :01:54.just 79 ahead of Conservative candidate Jack Brereton.

:01:55. > :01:57.It was a major blow to Ukip, who hoped the pro-Brexit vote

:01:58. > :01:59.would result in victory and the party's second MP.

:02:00. > :02:01.Our Staffordshire reporter Sian Grzsysck has been getting reaction.

:02:02. > :02:03.Have report contains flashing images.

:02:04. > :02:07.BBC Radio Stoke, if you're waking up, Gareth Snell has won.

:02:08. > :02:10.A new day and a new MP for Stoke central.

:02:11. > :02:14.It was business as usual for most in the city centre,

:02:15. > :02:16.but there was plenty to digest for the winners and losers

:02:17. > :02:19.of what proved to be a tough political fight.

:02:20. > :02:22.And Last night the new Labour MP admitted it hadn't been

:02:23. > :02:33.Feeling very happy about the fact that the Labour Party has been able

:02:34. > :02:38.to hold this seat. It was a tough election, but ultimately the people

:02:39. > :02:44.of Stoke, Stoke-on-Trent made their voice heard and I'm very glad to be

:02:45. > :02:45.going to Parliament to represent them.

:02:46. > :02:47.All Ukip's leader could do was to try and appear positive

:02:48. > :02:50.in the midst of what was clearly a painful failure.

:02:51. > :02:56.We have cut their majority in half. We have unified the party like never

:02:57. > :03:05.before. We will go forward now and we will look. Ukip's time will come.

:03:06. > :03:09.This will happen. This should been a very easy win for Labour. They've

:03:10. > :03:14.helped this seat since it was created back in 1950. A challenging

:03:15. > :03:17.win, but a disastrous results for these guys, Ukip, they thought they

:03:18. > :03:21.would be celebrating here today. Today they are facing tough

:03:22. > :03:24.questions. If they can't win here in appropriate city, where can they

:03:25. > :03:28.win? The fact that is Paul Nuttall thought he could get in and then has

:03:29. > :03:35.the cheek to say it is only 72nd market list, how disrespectful of

:03:36. > :03:40.the local people can you be? -- on our hit list. I'm disappointed. I

:03:41. > :03:48.wanted Ukip in. I wanted change. And so is been a strong Labour seat and

:03:49. > :03:50.his policies like I said are not what I voted for.

:03:51. > :03:53.Stoke saw a lot of the labour leader in the run up to this by-election

:03:54. > :03:56.and today he returned, clearly relieved to have hung

:03:57. > :03:58.on here, after a bruising defeat in the other by-election

:03:59. > :04:05.I tell you what happened yesterday, people came out, worked, knocked on

:04:06. > :04:09.doors. They delivered a message. It is a message about the economy. It

:04:10. > :04:11.is the message about gods. It is a message -- jobs. It is a message

:04:12. > :04:13.about this country. Of course, many people today

:04:14. > :04:15.were just focussed on enjoying the rest of half term with the kids,

:04:16. > :04:18.but the by election was still on their minds

:04:19. > :04:26.at stoke's ski centre. It would have been a shock had they

:04:27. > :04:30.not one. What they need to do now is work on pulling everyone together.

:04:31. > :04:31.Need to do some things to get the majority back up, I think. Get some

:04:32. > :04:35.trust back on the people. And, like the whole campaign,

:04:36. > :04:37.doing that might continue to be I spoke to Stoke Central's new MP,

:04:38. > :04:42.Gareth Snell, a little earlier. I asked him what his priorities

:04:43. > :04:48.are for his constituents. As I said during the election

:04:49. > :04:51.campaign, my priorities will be to make sure that we get

:04:52. > :05:04.the Brexit deal. For Stone-onTrent that we

:05:05. > :05:06.need and we deserve, such as education,

:05:07. > :05:09.homes, we have got lots of Brownfield sites

:05:10. > :05:10.in Stoke-on-Trent that are ripe

:05:11. > :05:12.for development, but also challenging the Government to make

:05:13. > :05:13.sure we get A voter turnout of just

:05:14. > :05:17.a little over 36%, why do you think the voters

:05:18. > :05:20.were so apathetic? I think the storm Doris had

:05:21. > :05:22.a little bit to do with But this has historically

:05:23. > :05:30.had a low turnout and that is not something that I am

:05:31. > :05:32.content to let lie now. One of the issues that

:05:33. > :05:35.I will be taking forward over the next three

:05:36. > :05:37.years is looking at how we can really engage

:05:38. > :05:38.with civil society, how

:05:39. > :05:40.we can give a clear, Labour Party which means in 2020

:05:41. > :05:44.at the general election people are actually coming out

:05:45. > :05:46.to support the Labour Party. How are you going to do that

:05:47. > :05:53.because you got quite a big bit What we showed in this campaign

:05:54. > :05:59.is that when the Labour Party campaigns on issues that matters

:06:00. > :06:01.to local people, some of which are outside our comfort

:06:02. > :06:03.zone, we can resonate. this process over the next three

:06:04. > :06:08.years, we can increase the Labour share of the vote, but also we can

:06:09. > :06:15.increase turnout overall. What about that

:06:16. > :06:18.share of the vote? Is it that Labour won

:06:19. > :06:25.or that Ukip lost? I think the fact that I'll

:06:26. > :06:28.be going to London on Monday to represent Stoke-on-Trent

:06:29. > :06:31.in Parliament is a clear sign that Ukip through the kitchen sink

:06:32. > :06:36.at this election, they threw money, they had a flash, slick

:06:37. > :06:38.campaign, they had national leaders up and down the country

:06:39. > :06:40.campaigning for them here in Stoke-on-Trent

:06:41. > :06:41.and they only increased their vote here

:06:42. > :06:44.in Stoke-on-Trent by just over 2%. For me, what that shows is

:06:45. > :06:47.that the politics that Ukip offer to You spent some time

:06:48. > :06:50.with Jeremy Corbyn this afternoon Does he have your 100%

:06:51. > :06:54.backing as Labour leader? Jeremy is the leader of the party

:06:55. > :06:58.and I will be working as hard as I can now to make sure we win

:06:59. > :07:01.the general election in 2020 Does he have your 100%

:07:02. > :07:05.backing as Labour leader? I'm not going to put percentages on,

:07:06. > :07:08.but Jeremy is the leader. He has my support and I want to see

:07:09. > :07:11.him as Prime Minister in 2020 He is somebody that you have

:07:12. > :07:14.previously described Previously, I was making comment

:07:15. > :07:18.on the fact that the Labour Party was in danger of eating itself alive

:07:19. > :07:21.during the leadership election. Jeremy was elected with a clear

:07:22. > :07:28.mandate by the people And as I said, he came

:07:29. > :07:32.and campaigned for me yesterday in Stoke-on-Trent and now

:07:33. > :07:36.it is my job to campaign for Jeremy to be

:07:37. > :07:37.prime ministers the next general election.

:07:38. > :07:40.Our Political Editor Patrick Burns is in Stoke for us now.

:07:41. > :07:42.Patrick Gareth Snell was evasive about giving his full backing

:07:43. > :07:48.in Copeland by election, what does this say about the state

:07:49. > :07:59.Very interesting, those comments that you drew from him there. Yes

:08:00. > :08:02.this result here in Stoke Central was much better for Labour than that

:08:03. > :08:07.one up there in Copeland, but you could put them both together and

:08:08. > :08:10.they have one thing in common. After seven years of Tory led Government

:08:11. > :08:19.in which Labour preserve the relentless focus of... The

:08:20. > :08:23.Conservative's evidence is actually strengthening rather than weakening.

:08:24. > :08:27.I can tell you that the disquiet over the Jeremy Corbyn leadership is

:08:28. > :08:31.not just amongst the usual suspects on the so-called moderate Labour

:08:32. > :08:34.benches who triggered that leadership challenge last summer, it

:08:35. > :08:38.extends to those on the left who would be his natural sympathisers.

:08:39. > :08:45.They are in a very sad mood at the moment. You will have seen a few by

:08:46. > :08:49.elections. Have you seen so much attention on the party who came

:08:50. > :08:54.second? How much of a problem is this for Ukip? Remarkable. If they

:08:55. > :09:01.can't win here, Brexit Central, where can they win? Now they are

:09:02. > :09:05.saying it was only 72nd on their list. It is very serious and two by

:09:06. > :09:11.the recriminations begin. The MEP is saying that Paul Nuttall's advisors

:09:12. > :09:14.behind this campaign should be sacked. Labour concentrated their

:09:15. > :09:20.campaign on the health service. Do you think that Brexit is beginning

:09:21. > :09:24.to fade away as a major political issue in Stoke? On the contrary. If

:09:25. > :09:31.you can buy me Tory and Ukip votes, you will get 10,500, which is way

:09:32. > :09:34.more than Labour got. I think this is another worry for Ukip.

:09:35. > :09:42.Conservatives are saying that we other party a project now, drawing

:09:43. > :09:44.further support for the Conservatives.

:09:45. > :09:46.And Patrick will have more on the election

:09:47. > :09:48.result on Sunday Politics, at the usual time of

:09:49. > :09:58.The woman who was killed by falling debris in storm force winds

:09:59. > :10:00.in Wolverhampton yesterday, has been named as Tahnie Martin.

:10:01. > :10:03.The 29-year-old was struck on the head in the City Centre.

:10:04. > :10:05.Staff at Wolverhampton University, where she worked, described her

:10:06. > :10:07.as irrepressibly optimistic, kind and full of ideas.

:10:08. > :10:18.At the spot where she collapsed, passers by genuinely shocked,

:10:19. > :10:21.bewildered by the death so sudden and violent at a moment

:10:22. > :10:26.so simple and commonplace, walking along a street with friends.

:10:27. > :10:32.It is a shame for her and her family.

:10:33. > :10:38.Just looking at her face, you could cry, couldn't you?

:10:39. > :10:42.There is a lot of community spirit and more the Hampton and she is

:10:43. > :10:47.You can see by all the flowers there.

:10:48. > :10:49.29-year-old Tahnie Lee Martin from Stafford was killed instantly,

:10:50. > :10:52.struck on the head by a wooden panel whipped from a building

:10:53. > :10:56.Tahnie was on with two colleagues from the university

:10:57. > :10:59.of Wolverhampton where she worked, they were treated in hospital

:11:00. > :11:22.In Smethwick destruction but relief no-one was hurt when a poplar tree

:11:23. > :11:24.80-feet tall crashed into the roof of a leisure centre.

:11:25. > :11:29.Six people using the gym at the time were at the other end of the room.

:11:30. > :11:37.It is almost certain we're going to have to crane

:11:38. > :11:39.that off and it'll take some time to sort that out.

:11:40. > :11:42.We also had some trees come down in the borough yesterday alone,

:11:43. > :11:46.so we will need to prioritise the ones that we need to sort first.

:11:47. > :11:47.Here is another of those downed trees.

:11:48. > :11:49.This time on top of a daycare centre.

:11:50. > :11:52.It was half term, but there were four children inside.

:11:53. > :11:56.In Birmingham's jewellery quarter another casualty of Doris,

:11:57. > :11:59.the top of this Victorian building caught on CCTV crashing

:12:00. > :12:07.It was halfway through either repair or

:12:08. > :12:10.refurbishment, but to see that the winds have taken it, I'm

:12:11. > :12:15.A bit of history just lost to the wind.

:12:16. > :12:17.In Wolverhampton, the investigation into Tahnie Martin's

:12:18. > :12:20.The police, the council and health and safety

:12:21. > :12:22.officials working together to establish who owns

:12:23. > :12:32.Storm Doris continued to cause problems for commuters today,

:12:33. > :12:35.as Birmingham's cross city line was suspended all day.

:12:36. > :12:36.It meant replacement bus services for many,

:12:37. > :12:45.Bob Hockenhull reports on the impact.

:12:46. > :12:48.Battling to land at Birmingham Airport at the height of the storm.

:12:49. > :12:51.80-mile-per hour winds testing the nerves of pilot and passengers.

:12:52. > :12:54.Once the winds subsided, it was trains not planes

:12:55. > :12:59.still suffering in the aftermath of Storm Doris.

:13:00. > :13:01.The Redditch to Lichfield line through Birmingham completely

:13:02. > :13:04.shut for a second day, engineers still carrying out repairs

:13:05. > :13:12.at multiple locations along the track.

:13:13. > :13:14.We've got 14 trapped trains on the line.

:13:15. > :13:17.Network Rail have to get out and repair

:13:18. > :13:19.Network Rail have to get out and repair the overhead lines

:13:20. > :13:24.We need to get the trains out of the way and then they

:13:25. > :13:27.need to go back again to assess the rest of the damage, make those

:13:28. > :13:30.One of those stranded trains still stuck in Selly Oak

:13:31. > :13:33.Unsuspecting passengers were still turning up to find any

:13:34. > :13:37.hopes of travelling along the line dashed.

:13:38. > :13:43.I'm trying to get to Durham to visit my sister and obviously

:13:44. > :13:46.there are no trains here, so I will have to get an Uber

:13:47. > :13:50.as opposed to ?1.60 which usually it would be to New Street.

:13:51. > :13:54.I checked this morning, it had no problems.

:13:55. > :14:06.Well there is a train parked on the platform.

:14:07. > :14:19.In the past half-hour, it has been announced that they have finished

:14:20. > :14:20.work sooner than expected. It is now open.

:14:21. > :14:23.But one group of children had a narrow escape after the roof

:14:24. > :14:25.of the clubhouse at Knowle FC was ripped off,

:14:26. > :14:28.Luckily no one was hurt, but it's left the club

:14:29. > :14:31.Nicola Beckford is there this evening, Nicola,

:14:32. > :14:36.It was terrifying. I spoke to some of the young people who were here

:14:37. > :14:39.yesterday. About 11 o'clock and 35 of them were inside the clubhouse.

:14:40. > :14:45.You can see it behind me. Some are outside putting on their football

:14:46. > :14:50.boots. Huge gust of wind ripped the roof. Ali is but Albee. This is what

:14:51. > :14:54.he told me. Was like talking to my friend and it was like, what is

:14:55. > :14:56.happening? I don't know what is happening! It is the end of the

:14:57. > :15:09.world expect we are doomed expect! happening! It is the end of the

:15:10. > :15:12.world expect we are doomed You're from the club, tummy more about what

:15:13. > :15:17.happened? I got a call round about 11 o'clock and write it was in a

:15:18. > :15:25.devastation. There were children, some sobbing, somewhat excitable.

:15:26. > :15:29.They were all very well looked after by the coaches who were here. The

:15:30. > :15:36.code should actually had to bring the children out, escort them out of

:15:37. > :15:41.the building here. Without those, Ronnie, Kerry and Nicole, there

:15:42. > :15:46.could well have been a terrible tragedy here. They did to refit job.

:15:47. > :15:51.They told me earlier that they have been practising for this kind of

:15:52. > :15:58.event. -- terrific event. I have heard that as well. The way the roof

:15:59. > :16:07.came off, it is gone off at the back. It disturbs the pitch over

:16:08. > :16:10.there. What is the future for you? We're hoping to get the roof

:16:11. > :16:14.replaced, but we don't know what is going to happen. We have very

:16:15. > :16:18.limited resources here and we just cannot at the moment say what is

:16:19. > :16:21.going to happen. I will leave it there thank you for talking to us.

:16:22. > :16:25.At least the children are safe. There will not be any matches played

:16:26. > :16:31.here, they are hoping to get back to normal as soon as boss.

:16:32. > :16:34.We had so many pictures and reports from viewers yesterday about damage

:16:35. > :16:36.caused by storm Doris, thank you for those.

:16:37. > :16:39.Rebecca was out in the thick of things, and is here now.

:16:40. > :16:40.What were the strongest recorded gusts?

:16:41. > :16:43.Yes, Mary this was a reading that I took up on the

:16:44. > :16:45.Staffordshire Moorlands, gusts of 77.7 miles per hour.

:16:46. > :16:48.Obviously, I'm not an official weather station.

:16:49. > :16:51.So these are the official readings taken yesterday,

:16:52. > :16:54.the top gust at Leek measured at 71mph, strong enough

:16:55. > :17:07.Calmer today, I'll be back with a forecast later.

:17:08. > :17:10.A woman has died after two bungalows caught fire in Shropshire.

:17:11. > :17:12.The alarm was raised at 5.30 this morning.

:17:13. > :17:14.The emergency services were sent to the development

:17:15. > :17:17.Two people have been treated for breathing in smoke,

:17:18. > :17:18.firefighters are searching the building.

:17:19. > :17:21.A number of animals are thought to have died when a Staffordshire

:17:22. > :17:24.The front window has been blown out of the home

:17:25. > :17:43.Local rivalry won't be the only thing at stake

:17:44. > :17:45.when the players of Wolves and Birmingham City run out

:17:46. > :17:49.Both teams are still in danger of dropping out

:17:50. > :17:51.They're joined in that relegation battle

:17:52. > :17:55.Fair to say, it's not been a great season so far

:17:56. > :18:00.Steve Bruce got off to a flying start when he took over

:18:01. > :18:03.at Aston Villa in October but after 16 weeks the emotions

:18:04. > :18:08.Frustrated, disappointed. I am determined to turn it round. We only

:18:09. > :18:11.do that by a few results and then quietly going about the rebuilding

:18:12. > :18:12.job that obviously the team needs. The lower half of the

:18:13. > :18:14.Championship table makes All four West Midlands sides

:18:15. > :18:18.are in the bottom ten and looking Gianfranco Zola is certainly under

:18:19. > :18:23.pressure at Birmingham City. He's won just once in his first 14

:18:24. > :18:27.games in charge but has been reassured again this week

:18:28. > :18:35.by the owners. We are working together. Not going

:18:36. > :18:42.on direction and another. I think the way that the club assessed the

:18:43. > :18:44.situation shows that there is still unity between us.

:18:45. > :18:45.Zola's next test comes at Wolves this evening.

:18:46. > :18:49.Their start to 2017 has been very lopsided with two FA Cup wins

:18:50. > :18:51.against Premier League opponents stacking up against a run of three

:18:52. > :19:02.There are still a third of the season to go. 45 points. It is

:19:03. > :19:07.incredible how many games still left and how many games to play for. I

:19:08. > :19:08.will not give the play-off up. We will go for it.

:19:09. > :19:11.Burton Albion may be the lowest ranked of our clubs but in many ways

:19:12. > :19:14.Expected to struggle if they beat Blackburn this evening
