:00:00. > :00:08.Taking Wolverhampton to Cannes - the latest phase of the city's

:00:09. > :00:10.multi million pound regeneration - looking for international

:00:11. > :00:18.For a few years we've been moving into our economic recovery phase.

:00:19. > :00:20.Now we're into that really confident phase.

:00:21. > :00:22.We'll be looking at how and when this promised regeneration

:00:23. > :00:34.Stalling on pension plans - the BMW workers protesting

:00:35. > :00:37.against the car makers proposals to close final salary scheme

:00:38. > :00:39.Too fragile to touch, the family of a five year

:00:40. > :00:42.old raising awareness of a rare skin disease - which means

:00:43. > :00:49.When you pick a baby up, you'd scoop them under their arms -

:00:50. > :00:51.naturally, that's the way that you'd pick a baby up.

:00:52. > :00:57.Not the historic house, but a small eco-dome made

:00:58. > :01:01.And Hereford was basking in the best of the sun and the temperatures

:01:02. > :01:03.today on the warmest day of the year so far.

:01:04. > :01:05.But will we be so lucky this weekend?

:01:06. > :01:22.The future of Wolverhampton has gone on show on the French Riviera.

:01:23. > :01:30.It's hoped businesses attending an international property convention

:01:31. > :01:33.in Cannes will help to regenerate the City - and create 2500

:01:34. > :01:37.It's part of a multi million pound redevelopment of Wolverhampton.

:01:38. > :01:39.As our Black Country reporter Ben Godfrey has been discovering,

:01:40. > :01:48.the investment has been a long time coming.

:01:49. > :01:51.You have to go back a long way to hear people talking up

:01:52. > :01:53.Wolverhampton as a place of prosperity.

:01:54. > :01:56.But after years of failed regeneration,

:01:57. > :02:07.of missed opportunity, the economic clouds are parting.

:02:08. > :02:13.a staggering ?3.7 billion is currently being invested into

:02:14. > :02:17.Wolverhampton. It's the largest Invesco meant in years.

:02:18. > :02:20.The Mander Centre is being rebuilt, grim old market buildings are making

:02:21. > :02:25.way for a massive retail corridor on the Westside, and the decaying

:02:26. > :02:28.railway station will be rebuilt as part of a

:02:29. > :02:37.And this is i9 - a prestige office development,

:02:38. > :02:40.occupying 50,000 square feet of land next to the historic

:02:41. > :02:45.Today, the plans went on show in Cannes, where international

:02:46. > :03:01.With 2000 and eight in the economic recession, Wolverhampton was hit the

:03:02. > :03:04.same as other people. The last few years we've been moving into an

:03:05. > :03:05.economic recovery phase. Now we're into the really confident phase

:03:06. > :03:11.where we know we can do things. Around 2,500 jobs will be

:03:12. > :03:14.created in the city centre, when the Wolverhampton interchange

:03:15. > :03:20.is complete. There's some brilliant work being

:03:21. > :03:30.done about how you rigid generator cities. If you can keep that 20 to

:03:31. > :03:30.30-year-olds in the city, the city will regenerate.

:03:31. > :03:32.But for many Wulfrunians, large scale regeneration

:03:33. > :03:35.like this is decades overdue, so you can forgive some cynicism.

:03:36. > :03:45.You've got places like Bentley Bridge, St John's retail centre, you

:03:46. > :03:49.can actually do your shopping without coming into town centre. It

:03:50. > :03:53.just ate a little bit more, a bit more shine to it. You have people

:03:54. > :03:57.who live on the street and that is not good if you are doing with

:03:58. > :03:57.generation. You want to take care of your people.

:03:58. > :04:00.With a growing student population, the city is becoming one

:04:01. > :04:04.Investment brings new challenges then, and here the demand

:04:05. > :04:08.for affordable homes has never been higher.

:04:09. > :04:15.Ben Godfrey, BBC Midlands Today, Wolverhampton.

:04:16. > :04:17.Joining us now from Wolverhampton, is Ninder Johal from

:04:18. > :04:18.the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership.

:04:19. > :04:20.There are some big numbers here -

:04:21. > :04:27.for the interchange area and this new office

:04:28. > :04:37.It is all ready been secured and we are hoping if everything goes to

:04:38. > :04:47.plan everything should be up and ready at the end of 2018. Apologies

:04:48. > :04:49.for the interruption. We'll see if we can go back once we've gotten rid

:04:50. > :04:52.of the interloper! How much does the regeneration

:04:53. > :05:07.of the City depend on investors I think if you have great products

:05:08. > :05:12.to sell you need to go where the action is. And the action is where

:05:13. > :05:15.all the global players come together and if that is the place you need to

:05:16. > :05:20.be that is the place you need to be. And if you are not there then you're

:05:21. > :05:25.not serious about your products, your place. You will be missed and

:05:26. > :05:27.people will know that. Well, there is certainly no shortage of

:05:28. > :05:28.enthusiasm in Wolverhampton! The point was made in the report

:05:29. > :05:31.about taking care of the people of the City -

:05:32. > :05:33.not just office space, but affordable homes,

:05:34. > :05:43.plans for that? Absolutely. If you look at Bilston,

:05:44. > :05:51.there is ready and village being built there. We should be looking at

:05:52. > :05:56.another 13 to 15,000 homes. Across the country we are looking at

:05:57. > :05:59.40,000. For the region to work it needs housing, infrastructure and

:06:00. > :06:02.with this kind of investment you are taking all the boxes. Thank you very

:06:03. > :06:05.much. BMW workers at the Hams Hall engine

:06:06. > :06:08.plant in Warwickshire could be going out on strike,

:06:09. > :06:11.in protest at the car makers plans BMW wants to close the current

:06:12. > :06:16.scheme for everyone at the end of May -

:06:17. > :06:19.workers say they stand to lose Hands off our pensions!

:06:20. > :06:26.Hands off our pensions! They've never protested

:06:27. > :06:29.like this before - but then there's never been

:06:30. > :06:31.so much at stake. ?150,000?

:06:32. > :06:35.It's roughly about ?130,000. That's what they reckon they'll lose

:06:36. > :06:40.if BMW push through with a plan to end the current final salary

:06:41. > :06:45.pension scheme by May of this year. Last year BMW reported record

:06:46. > :06:51.profits of ?6 billion. There's real anger here today -

:06:52. > :06:54.in fact, industrial relations are said to be at their

:06:55. > :06:57.most fraught since the They say they are proud

:06:58. > :07:06.of what they call excellent pension

:07:07. > :07:07.provision in the past but, crucially, they want

:07:08. > :07:10.toensure and protect pension With an ageing population though,

:07:11. > :07:16.some argue big companies like BMW can't afford final salary

:07:17. > :07:20.pensions any more. Profitable companies,

:07:21. > :07:24.it's part of the package they offer. Our members have actually

:07:25. > :07:26.given up some of their pay in the past to make sure this

:07:27. > :07:31.pension scheme operates properly. Many of the 600 staff

:07:32. > :07:34.here transfered from BMW's The agreement was that when we came

:07:35. > :07:41.over here they would keep our final And we feel let down

:07:42. > :07:45.that they haven't done that and honoured that agreement

:07:46. > :07:47.from when we did come over here. Because they needed

:07:48. > :07:49.skills to come into this A ballot for industrial action

:07:50. > :07:55.will close at the end of March - unions say a strike is imminent

:07:56. > :08:00.unless BMW do a U-turn. Sarah Bishop, BBC Midlands

:08:01. > :08:06.Today, near Coleshill. Unemployment in the region

:08:07. > :08:08.has bucked the national trend and is on the rise,

:08:09. > :08:10.according to new figures. The jobless total in

:08:11. > :08:13.the West Midlands rose by nine thousand in the last quarter -

:08:14. > :08:15.meaning 160 thousand people That's the equivalent of 5.6%

:08:16. > :08:20.of the working population - 261 motorists have been

:08:21. > :08:27.given new heavier fines for using mobile phones

:08:28. > :08:31.while driving in the West Midlands. In a week-long clamp-down,

:08:32. > :08:33.offenders included 30 lorry drivers, a driving instructor,

:08:34. > :08:39.and a driver accessing mobile All those caught have

:08:40. > :08:49.been fined ?200 - A former governor allegedly involved

:08:50. > :08:57.in the Trojan Horse scandal in Birmingham schools,

:08:58. > :08:58.is appealing against a ban imposed on him

:08:59. > :09:03.by the Department for Education. Tahir Alam, who was chair

:09:04. > :09:06.of governors at Park View in Alum Rock, is barred

:09:07. > :09:08.from being involved He was accused of trying to instil

:09:09. > :09:11.hardline Islamic values. Mr Alam is challenging the decision

:09:12. > :09:16.at a tribunal in London. Fundraisers trying to keep

:09:17. > :09:18.a rare piece of Wedgwood pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, have been

:09:19. > :09:21.given until July to find the money. Yesterday's deadline

:09:22. > :09:22.was extended after a ?90,000 But a total of ?482,500 is needed

:09:23. > :09:29.to stop the vase from going abroad, rather than being returned

:09:30. > :09:36.to the Potteries Museum. As a parent, hugging your child

:09:37. > :09:39.is one of the things But for Kim and Paul Lovatt

:09:40. > :09:41.from Stoke-on-trent, cuddles have been few

:09:42. > :09:44.and far betwen. Their five-year-old daughter, Poppy,

:09:45. > :09:48.was born with a rare skin condition It means her skin is so fragile

:09:49. > :09:53.that it can blister and peel Her family have been fundraising

:09:54. > :09:58.and want to help others Laura May McMullan's report

:09:59. > :10:03.contains images some Poppy loves flowers

:10:04. > :10:18.and playing outdoors. But the slightest of knocks

:10:19. > :10:21.and even a cuddle can We have to dress the

:10:22. > :10:24.affected areas every day. The worst areas of her left leg,

:10:25. > :10:27.round her feet, round her You just have to be there for her,

:10:28. > :10:36.more than anything else. Five-year-old Poppy was born

:10:37. > :10:41.with EB, epidermolysis bullosa - a rare condition affecting

:10:42. > :10:46.around one in every 17,000 Picking a baby up, you'd scoop them

:10:47. > :10:54.up under their arms, - naturally that's the way

:10:55. > :10:57.you'd pick a baby up and we had to tell people not

:10:58. > :11:01.to because she blistered and the skin came away

:11:02. > :11:03.from her armpits. There were three main types of EB

:11:04. > :11:12.and the severity, there is a wide spectrum

:11:13. > :11:17.from mild to very severe. And Poppy as the type of EB

:11:18. > :11:20.where as she gets older, hopefully, it will be

:11:21. > :11:25.easier to manage. Mummy does my dressings

:11:26. > :11:35.and I help her. On her back, there were scabs on her

:11:36. > :11:38.back and you had to avoid them, But it doesn't stop

:11:39. > :11:41.her living her life. She's thriving at school,

:11:42. > :11:43.where they've made special We had to look at the indoor

:11:44. > :11:48.environment, and change the tables We had to add a medical room

:11:49. > :11:53.to the school so there's a safe, sterile environment to deal

:11:54. > :11:58.with Poppy's needs. There's no cure for the condition,

:11:59. > :12:00.and that's why her parents Debra, the EB charity,

:12:01. > :12:07.term it as "the worse disease That's their slogan

:12:08. > :12:11.for their charity, because so many Nothing at all holds her back -

:12:12. > :12:18.she's very, very strong willed. She won't do anything

:12:19. > :12:26.she doesn't want to do. And we're all really,

:12:27. > :12:28.really proud of her. I like cuddles with

:12:29. > :12:30.Mummy, Daddy and Jacob. Poppy tries to lead as normal a life

:12:31. > :12:34.as possible and, on her say so, the family never say no

:12:35. > :12:49.to her precious cuddles. Thanks for joining us

:12:50. > :12:52.on Midlands Today, this is our top story tonight: Taking Wolverhampton

:12:53. > :12:54.to Cannes - the latest phase of the city's multi million

:12:55. > :12:56.pound regeneration - looking for international

:12:57. > :13:04.investors. Your detailed weather

:13:05. > :13:08.forecast to come shortly - also in tonight's programme,

:13:09. > :13:10.Keeping the Wolves from the relegation trap door

:13:11. > :13:12.-with a late comeback and three rare Telling the story of One Love -

:13:13. > :13:19.the life and work of Bob Marley told Bob Marley told on stage,

:13:20. > :13:28.being premiered in Birmingham. How quickly would you be

:13:29. > :13:31.prepared to turn your back on your home comforts,

:13:32. > :13:33.to live in an Eco-dome ? Well hundreds of so called

:13:34. > :13:38."caretakers" have volunteered to live without modern comforts

:13:39. > :13:41.and technology in a dome made of recycled rubbish,

:13:42. > :13:44.in the grounds of the magnificent In a forest clearing

:13:45. > :13:54.in the Warwickshire countryside stands The Clearing - a creation

:13:55. > :13:56.of environmental art facing the I know they seem quite different,

:13:57. > :14:02.if you look over the river, yes, they are very, very different,

:14:03. > :14:05.but actually they really balance of the landscape and the mansion

:14:06. > :14:09.house with something that actually is very 21st-century - for me it's

:14:10. > :14:11.really, really important. Built with temporary

:14:12. > :14:13.planning permission, scrap metal and recycled industrial

:14:14. > :14:18.plywood, the ?60,000 Heritage Lottery-funded dome will be

:14:19. > :14:23.in place for three years. But can the experiment

:14:24. > :14:25.with other people's What we're trying

:14:26. > :14:30.to do is we're trying to do a project

:14:31. > :14:32.about climate change. It's the idea that, this world

:14:33. > :14:34.without traffic jams and central heating and Kim Kardashian

:14:35. > :14:37.and big supermarkets - is that actually a nightmare or is it

:14:38. > :14:40.actually an opportunity to live in a Capability Brown

:14:41. > :14:44.carefully designed this Now it is hoped the people

:14:45. > :14:51.of the 21st-century will get a You don't have to like it -

:14:52. > :14:57.art's always like that, isn't it? If you make art that pleases

:14:58. > :15:00.everyone, it's really rubbish art! So, yeah, when not even trying

:15:01. > :15:03.to please everyone, you know? We're confident that we've

:15:04. > :15:08.made a good thing here. From next week series of volunteer

:15:09. > :15:11.caretakers will live in the dome for a week at a time,

:15:12. > :15:17.turning their back on the comforts of home for a once-in-a-lifetime

:15:18. > :15:19.experience. Well, I think there's plenty

:15:20. > :15:22.of people that put their names down to be caretakers,

:15:23. > :15:24.so we're one of the lucky ones, There's everything

:15:25. > :15:27.here you need, so... To survive, anyway -

:15:28. > :15:29.let's put it that way. When you live in a space

:15:30. > :15:32.like this you make with what you have and you appreciate

:15:33. > :15:36.everything you have, so it's an exercise of, is almost a social

:15:37. > :15:39.experiment in itself, you know? If you fancy a peek

:15:40. > :15:41.at an artistic life of the grid, the dome opens

:15:42. > :15:52.to the public this weekend. Time for sport - Ian Winter has

:15:53. > :15:55.joined me, not a vintage night if for our football clubs -

:15:56. > :16:00.but one exception. But a couple of well-timed

:16:01. > :16:03.substitutions inspired Wolves to a well-deserved win,

:16:04. > :16:06.away to Brentford. It was quite refreshing

:16:07. > :16:09.to hear both managers agree And Wolves are now four points

:16:10. > :16:13.clear of the Championship It must be infuriating to be

:16:14. > :16:20.a Wolves fan this season. They were booed off on Saturday,

:16:21. > :16:23.and last night, they fell But their battling

:16:24. > :16:26.performance deserved better. And their patience paid off with two

:16:27. > :16:30.goals in the the last four minutes. Matt Doherty made it 1-1,

:16:31. > :16:32.before Heider Costa sealed And both managers agreed,

:16:33. > :16:39.Wolves were the better side Not quite such a rosy

:16:40. > :16:42.picture in League One. Walsall missed the chance to move

:16:43. > :16:48.closer to the play-offs, And just look at the basement battle

:16:49. > :16:51.to avoid relegation. Shrewsbury, who didn't play last

:16:52. > :16:54.night, have that five point cushion above Port Vale,

:16:55. > :16:57.who lost 2-1 defeat at Northampton. but a late, late goal made it

:16:58. > :17:02.a disappointing night It was the same old story

:17:03. > :17:08.for Coventry as Southend scored twice in the first

:17:09. > :17:10.half to win the game, Well, let's just say today's racing

:17:11. > :17:19.at the Festival was more exciting than last night's football, as

:17:20. > :17:25.the Robins lost 3-0 away to Exeter. I'm not too sure about Cheltenham's

:17:26. > :17:28.purple and yellow kit... A glorious day for

:17:29. > :17:32.the Festival today - Stand by for arguably

:17:33. > :17:37.the most exciting finish Racing towards the last

:17:38. > :17:42.in the Neptune Novices Hurdle, keep an eye on Willoughby Court

:17:43. > :17:45.in the yellow and black - ridden by David Bass and trained

:17:46. > :17:49.just 15 miles from Cheltenham The horse delivered a storming

:17:50. > :17:54.finish to beat the 2-1 Delight for the trainer

:17:55. > :17:58.Ben Pauling - And I'm sure there'll be quite a few

:17:59. > :18:04.happy punters in that corner Birmingham's first World boxing

:18:05. > :18:12.champion says he believes the city will produce more big stars

:18:13. > :18:14.in the future. Kal Yafai will make his first

:18:15. > :18:17.title defence against And he'll be joined on the bill

:18:18. > :18:23.at the Barclaycard Arena just a warning, this report contains

:18:24. > :18:36.some flash photography. Ladies and gentlemen -

:18:37. > :18:38.the reason we're here, the homecoming of the newly-crowned

:18:39. > :18:41.WBA world champion - Kal Yafai. This was the man they'd

:18:42. > :18:43.all come to see. After winning the world title

:18:44. > :18:46.in Manchester in December, Kal Yafai will make his first defence

:18:47. > :18:48.in Birmingham in May. And just keep building

:18:49. > :18:52.World Championship boxing here, in Birmingham,

:18:53. > :18:54.and then bring one of the other champions over

:18:55. > :18:55.to Just having a world title

:18:56. > :18:59.fought here in Birmingham is massive but to be able

:19:00. > :19:02.to bring a unification fight That success has been built

:19:03. > :19:06.on relentless hours in the gym under the guidance of Max McCracken,

:19:07. > :19:09.whose brother Rob came close to being the first

:19:10. > :19:12.Brummie world champion. And while Yafai is the star turn,

:19:13. > :19:16.the full bill showcases the current With Sam Eggington's European title

:19:17. > :19:22.shot and of course that first world title defence for Kal Yafai,

:19:23. > :19:24.this really is an amazing time for boxing

:19:25. > :19:28.in the second city. There's always been a very strong

:19:29. > :19:30.boxing community in Now it's time to reach out

:19:31. > :19:34.to the casual audience, the people that like good

:19:35. > :19:36.sport, good entertainment, and we

:19:37. > :19:37.want them to come along, enjoy

:19:38. > :19:38.the fact that Birmingham has got some

:19:39. > :19:40.great fighters, now world champions as well, and come

:19:41. > :19:44.and follow their journey. Kal's brother Gamal is also tipped

:19:45. > :19:47.to be a future world champion and then there's Sam Eggington who's

:19:48. > :19:58.rapidly climbing The car really compare his story to

:19:59. > :20:07.mind because he's an Olympian. It's hard to beat that. But having a

:20:08. > :20:10.Birmingham world champion definitely pushes Birmingham boxing forward in

:20:11. > :20:13.general. Like I say, it's a big thing and hopefully I can mimic what

:20:14. > :20:14.he has done. Kal Yafai may well be
