:00:56. > :01:01.and why he's having to go back to school.

:01:02. > :01:03.And after such a stunning weekend, with the best temperatures we've

:01:04. > :01:06.seen so far this year, and likelihood of a cracking Easter,

:01:07. > :01:24."Sometimes it's just the best response - just to smile".

:01:28. > :01:30.the world after she was pictured confronting an English Defence

:01:31. > :01:38.Saffiyah Khan says she stepped in to protect a woman who had been

:01:39. > :01:40.surrounded by members of the far-right movement -

:01:41. > :01:42.during their demonstration in the city on Saturday.

:01:43. > :01:45.She says she hopes the picture will allow her to

:01:46. > :01:48."do something positive", and denies EDL claims

:01:49. > :01:50.that she disrupted a minute's silence for terror attack

:01:51. > :01:56.Our reporter Bob Hockenhull is in Birmingham City Centre for us now.

:01:57. > :01:59.So tell us more about the demonstration.

:02:00. > :02:03.About 100 people demonstrated here in Centenary Square.

:02:04. > :02:08.The EDL protest was smaller than other we've seen in the past

:02:09. > :02:12.in Birmingham and other parts of the Midlands,

:02:13. > :02:15.but this one will be remembered for one photograph shared

:02:16. > :02:24.An image that's travelled around the world -

:02:25. > :02:27.today, at home in Acocks Green, Saffiyah Khan was reflecting on her

:02:32. > :02:33.She says she stepped in to help a Muslim woman

:02:34. > :02:41.She seemed scared, but regardless of whether or not she felt scared,

:02:42. > :02:43.the fact of the matter is there was a group

:02:44. > :02:51.and I don't think anybody should be in that position.

:02:52. > :02:53.The photograph shows Saffiyah appearing to smile at

:02:54. > :02:59.She says he was poking his finger in her face,

:03:00. > :03:05.I was just looking at the guy, and sometimes just the best

:03:06. > :03:09.Were you actually scared when you intervened?

:03:10. > :03:15.I wasn't then, and I'm not now, and I don't intend to be.

:03:16. > :03:17.Ian Crossland hasn't yet commented today,

:03:18. > :03:22.but he did speak on Saturday before the photograph was taken.

:03:23. > :03:24.It's not a demonstration against Muslims,

:03:25. > :03:27.it's a demonstration against radical Mu...Islam.

:03:28. > :03:30.Around 100 people took part in the rally.

:03:31. > :03:33.The EDL says it moved the protest from Derby to Birmingham

:03:34. > :03:36.because Khalid Masood, the Westminster attacker,

:03:37. > :03:42.On a site claiming to be the EDL's official Facebook page,

:03:43. > :03:45.it said Saffiyah had been "disrespectful, shouting

:03:46. > :03:49.during a minute's silence for victims of terror attacks

:03:50. > :03:56.Saffiyah says there was no "one-minute silence".

:03:57. > :03:58.That's a really hurtful claim, because anyone that knows me,

:03:59. > :04:02.even not particularly well, or has just talk to me once

:04:03. > :04:10.or twice, can vouch for the fact that I would respect a minute's

:04:11. > :04:18.Saffiyah also denies claims she's a member of any anti-fascist group.

:04:19. > :04:21.People we spoke to seemed happy the photograph had been circulated

:04:22. > :04:27.I think it's a brave act, especially because they are quite,

:04:28. > :04:30.you know, they are a lot more aggressive and physically taller

:04:31. > :04:35.When she stayed calm, I think it brought more

:04:36. > :04:37.awareness to it rather than causing an argument.

:04:38. > :04:40.Saffiyah says she finds it strange the picture has

:04:41. > :04:42.attracted such notoriety, but hopes it'll motivate

:04:43. > :04:59.The picture has attracted numerous comments. The broadcaster Piers

:05:00. > :05:05.Morgan described it as the photo of the week, and the brand-new Yardley

:05:06. > :05:11.MP Jess Phillips from burning said the picture was a beacon of hope.

:05:12. > :05:17.The lady that Saffiyah Khan stepped in to defend has thanked her and the

:05:18. > :05:20.pair are due to meet later. A former EDL leader Tommy Robinson said, I

:05:21. > :05:22.don't care how many people don't like me saying it, the truth is the

:05:23. > :05:24.truth than the picture is embarrassing.

:05:25. > :05:26.Now imagine this - you're body-boarding off the coast,

:05:27. > :05:29.on holiday, when you realise a child has got into

:05:30. > :05:32.You go to his rescue - the next thing you know

:05:33. > :05:36.is when you wake up to be told you have suffered severe injuries.

:05:37. > :05:38.That's what happened to Deb Drew, from Stourbridge, in 2014.

:05:39. > :05:41.Now friends and family are fundraising, so she can

:05:42. > :05:51.Kisses for a dear friend whom they rarely get to see these days.

:05:52. > :05:56.A chance for Deb Drew to get out of her rehabilitation centre

:05:57. > :05:59.where she now spends all of her time.

:06:00. > :06:01.Back in 2014 she was holidaying in Woolacombe off

:06:02. > :06:06.Deb saw a young boy get into difficulties in the sea

:06:07. > :06:11.Both had to be rescued by the coastguard, but Deb suffered

:06:12. > :06:21.I can't move, so I can't wash myself or...

:06:22. > :06:28.I can now clean my teeth and feed myself breakfast now, so, obviously,

:06:29. > :06:41.She's a mother of two boys, who are now in their teens,

:06:42. > :06:44.and her dream is to spend this Christmas at home with them -

:06:45. > :06:46.she's not been back there since the accident.

:06:47. > :06:48.But she needs a very expensive wheelchair that

:06:49. > :06:52.can help her stand up, so friends from her old tennis club

:06:53. > :06:55.are cycling, pumping iron and getting fit fast

:06:56. > :06:59.for a three-day fundraising challenge.

:07:00. > :07:02.We are going to run up and down Snowdon in

:07:03. > :07:05.a fell race style challenge, and then we are going to swim

:07:06. > :07:08.on Lake Bala, which I understand in May is pretty cold,

:07:09. > :07:11.so we are all quite excited about that, and then

:07:12. > :07:14.we are going to do a 60-mile bike dash, a relay bike dash

:07:15. > :07:17.from the centre of Wales, mid-Wales, to our finish point,

:07:18. > :07:27.They need to raise ?25,000, and Deb couldn't be more grateful.

:07:28. > :07:35.Her mother Beryl is also a constant support.

:07:36. > :07:40.She says enabling her daughter to go home would be a huge relief.

:07:41. > :07:46.Her mind is healing quicker than her body is healing, which makes it...

:07:47. > :07:49.In one way it's good, but in another way it's not so good,

:07:50. > :07:59.because she's got time to think and wonder what's going to happen.

:08:00. > :08:02.Deb knows the boy survived but has never heard from his family.

:10:47. > :10:51.Our health correspondent Michele Paduano has been looking

:10:52. > :10:53.into the details and joins me from Staffordshire now.

:10:54. > :11:09.In a nutshell, nobody could actually make the numbers stack up. This

:11:10. > :11:14.contract was being led by inter-server with Phillips and two

:11:15. > :11:16.University hospitals, North Midlands and Royal Wolverhampton hospital.

:11:17. > :11:20.But they wanted them to do 10% more work over the next ten years with no

:11:21. > :11:21.extra money, and nobody was prepared to take that risk.

:11:22. > :11:24.In simple terms, they couldn't demonstrate that they were able

:11:25. > :11:28.We wanted them to increase the number of people

:11:29. > :11:29.who were diagnosed with cancer, and actually ensure

:11:30. > :11:32.that they were treated, but within the same money

:11:33. > :11:45.This idea was controversial from the start?

:11:46. > :11:51.It was. It was conceived four years ago and the idea was that cancer

:11:52. > :11:55.services were disjointed and this would bring them together, but from

:11:56. > :12:01.the start there were concerns this was privatisation through the back

:12:02. > :12:05.door. Was a 70,000 signature petition against this, and going

:12:06. > :12:10.forward there were concerns that two partners fell out of the

:12:11. > :12:14.partnership. Then we had a hedging Brooke experiment, which went foul.

:12:15. > :12:17.As a result, they had to pause this for a year, now we have reached this

:12:18. > :12:24.stage. What happens now?

:12:25. > :12:27.Basically, there is a plan B, that they go back to an NHS five-year

:12:28. > :12:32.plan, but clearly, with no extra money in the system, it will be

:12:33. > :12:33.difficult, very difficult to improve cancer care and those circumstances.

:12:34. > :12:35.Thank you. Thanks for joining us

:12:36. > :12:37.on Midlands Today. This is our top story

:12:38. > :12:38.tonight: Smiling at the English Defence

:12:39. > :12:42.League - how this picture of a young Asian woman in Birmingham

:12:43. > :12:44.sparked international reaction. Also in tonight's programme,

:12:45. > :12:46.a vote of confidence - despite another defeat

:12:47. > :12:48.at the weekend for Birmingham City, the club say they have no plans

:12:49. > :13:05.to replace manager Gianfranco Zola. After a scorching weekend, will be

:13:06. > :13:10.same be true for Easter? These were sun-drenched scenes over the weekend

:13:11. > :13:13.for a country retreat in the countryside. Temperatures soared to

:13:14. > :13:15.22 Celsius in Birmingham and Shropshire, but what is in store

:13:16. > :13:19.this week? Find out later. Now, how often do you sit

:13:20. > :13:22.down and actually write Because that's one

:13:23. > :13:25.of the ideas behind It's been organised

:13:26. > :13:27.by Jodi Ann Bickley, who is also the creator

:13:28. > :13:31.of the "One Million Lovely Letters" project, offering hope

:13:32. > :13:33.and inspiration through They start off as just a few words

:13:34. > :13:44.on a piece of paper, but these letters may end up

:13:45. > :13:54.changing people's lives. After suffering serious illness and

:13:55. > :13:58.depression, Jodi Ann Bickley decided to start the One Million Lovely

:13:59. > :14:04.Letters project in 2013 to try and help others feeling the way she was.

:14:05. > :14:07.People e-mail me with their darkest moments and their darkest times,

:14:08. > :14:12.because people feel like... We are all very... We all do it. With the

:14:13. > :14:17.light we will burden our family and friends are worried if we talk about

:14:18. > :14:21.problems. -- we feel like this. Because they are telling me so much

:14:22. > :14:25.about them it is like a letter from somebody they know.

:14:26. > :14:29.Tonight she is opening an exhibition of letters written by herself and

:14:30. > :14:33.others at the gallery in Birmingham. Where this exhibition is different

:14:34. > :14:37.is the letters are not just for show. If we find a special one that

:14:38. > :14:43.speaks to you, you can take it and keep it. The only deal is, you have

:14:44. > :14:45.to replace it with a letter you write, yourself, for somebody else.

:14:46. > :14:48.Jodi Ann's still a long way off from her 1 million lovely letters.

:14:49. > :14:51.Over the past four years, she's sent 4,000 letters,

:14:52. > :14:54.and currently has a waiting list of 8,000 requests.

:14:55. > :14:56.With so much demand, Jodi Ann's taken on ten

:14:57. > :15:10.To you, the one filled with doubt and the one who tells us how she

:15:11. > :15:11.can't do this and is not good enough.

:15:12. > :15:15...including Hannah Young, a mum of two from Nuneaton.

:15:16. > :15:22.Just because it could be making someone's day is lovely.

:15:23. > :15:26.With letter writing fast becoming a dying art, the hope is the

:15:27. > :15:28.exhibition, which until Sunday, urges far more of us to pick up a

:15:29. > :15:31.pen and paper. Time for sport -

:15:32. > :15:34.Dan Pallet has joined me. A stay of execution

:15:35. > :15:42.for Coventry City, Dan. Surprising because we looked at one

:15:43. > :15:44.point as if we would be relegated before the Wembley trip.

:15:45. > :15:47.The Sky Blues are like a spider, clinging onto their League One

:15:48. > :15:51.That's the view of their former manager John Sillett who led

:15:52. > :15:54.the Sky Blues to their finest hour at Wembley 30 years ago.

:15:55. > :15:56.With relegation looming for his old club, Ian Winter

:15:57. > :16:00.Dancing for joy with the FA Cup - John Sillett is one football's

:16:01. > :16:05.30 years ago next month, his Wembley jig delighted millions

:16:06. > :16:10.It's bringing tears to my eyes already.

:16:11. > :16:16.I feel like crying every time I look at it.

:16:17. > :16:18.Such a wonderful, wonderful occasion.

:16:19. > :16:20.A wonderful day. The best day of my life.

:16:21. > :16:22.In the past 12 months, John's recovered from major heart surgery,

:16:23. > :16:27.He'll celebrate his 81st birthday in July, and he'd love to celebrate

:16:28. > :16:34.Coventry's survival in League One, but he knows that's highly unlikely.

:16:35. > :16:36.12 months before John won the FA Cup, Coventry managed

:16:37. > :16:39.to win their last three games to survive in the old First

:16:40. > :16:43.Division, but now they need an even bigger miracle if they are to avoid

:16:44. > :16:47.relegation to the fourth tier of English football.

:16:48. > :16:49.At least Coventry aren't going down without a fight.

:16:50. > :16:52.Lee Burge saved a Peterborough penalty, before Ruben Lameiras

:16:53. > :16:58.Now the Sky Blues must win their last four games and pray

:16:59. > :17:01.that April is a pointless month for all their rivals.

:17:02. > :17:07.I don't think so, as much as I'd love it to.

:17:08. > :17:13.Let's hope the spider can go climbing up,

:17:14. > :17:17.Another goal will surely seal their fate...

:17:18. > :17:20.Ever since Paul Merson's goal condemned Coventry to relegation

:17:21. > :17:23.at Villa Park back in May 2001, it's been 16 years of

:17:24. > :17:29.Farewell to the Premier League after 34 years in the top flight,

:17:30. > :17:32.followed by 11 seasons in the championship,

:17:33. > :17:35.relegated to League 1 in 2012, and now teetering on the brink

:17:36. > :17:41.I grew up watching us play Liverpool and Manchester United

:17:42. > :17:44.and Arsenal and Chelsea, and next season I'll be watching

:17:45. > :17:46.them play Accrington Stanley, Morecambe, Lincoln City

:17:47. > :17:49.or Forest Green Rovers, teams like that, and it's

:17:50. > :17:54.Just like John Sillett, lifelong Coventry fan Moz Baker

:17:55. > :17:57.will always have his memories of Coventry's FA Cup win,

:17:58. > :18:01.but if relegation becomes reality against Charlton on Good Friday,

:18:02. > :18:04.then both men are hoping it won't be long before they are back.

:18:05. > :18:14.Ian Winter, BBC Midlands Today, Warwickshire.

:18:15. > :18:18.The Birmingham City manager Gianfranco Zola has been given

:18:19. > :18:21.a vote of confidence by the club's board after they were beaten

:18:22. > :18:25.Blues have lost 12 of their 20 games since the Italian took over

:18:26. > :18:27.in December and the fans have become increasingly frustrated.

:18:28. > :18:30.Gary Rowett's return to St Andrews on Saturday was always

:18:31. > :18:33.going to increase the pressure on the man who replaced him.

:18:34. > :18:37.Zola has seen a playoff challenge turn into a relegation fight since.

:18:38. > :18:39.Blues deserved a point after fighting back to equalise

:18:40. > :18:43.through Che Adams, but, in the last minute, one long

:18:44. > :18:46.clearance allowed Tom Ince to win it for the away side.

:18:47. > :18:48.The response from Birmingham's owners today

:18:49. > :19:00.The curse of the manager of the month proved enough

:19:01. > :19:04.but, after five straight victories, Paul Lambert said he couldn't be too

:19:05. > :19:06.critical of his side after defeat at Bristol City.

:19:07. > :19:08.Burton Albion boosted their own survival hopes and almost certainly

:19:09. > :19:13.ended Aston Villa's faint playoff chances.

:19:14. > :19:14.Jonathan Kodjia's 19th of the season cancelled out

:19:15. > :19:19.Port Vale and Shrewsbury changed places again

:19:20. > :19:25.Stefan Payne's goal saw the Shrews move out of the bottom four.

:19:26. > :19:27.Vale are back in the drop zone again, though,

:19:28. > :19:32.Walsall's season is drifting to a conclusion, but at least

:19:33. > :19:36.the fans could enjoy a first goal from record signing Andreas Makris.

:19:37. > :19:38.And drifting could also describe the state of play for our

:19:39. > :19:43.West Bromwich Albion have failed to score in five

:19:44. > :19:46.Stoke's form is worse, though, with four straight

:19:47. > :19:51.So, let's finish with the most dramatic game

:19:52. > :19:54.Cheltenham went from 2-0 up to 3-2 down at Wycombe,

:19:55. > :19:57.before rescuing a vital point at the end through

:19:58. > :20:07.So the dreaded vote of confidence for Zola, then, Dan.

:20:08. > :20:10.With Birmingham City worrying close to the relegation zone,

:20:11. > :20:12.how important could their Easter fixtures be?

:20:13. > :20:15.They look season-defining - and not just for the Blues.

:20:16. > :20:17.On Good Friday they're away to the bottom club Rotherham.

:20:18. > :20:23.Rotherham have lost 14 of their last 15 games and lost the other one,

:20:24. > :20:25.and on Easter Monday they're at home to Burton Albion.

:20:26. > :20:41.That's pretty tense. It was tense at the Ricoh Arena, watching Wasps.

:20:42. > :20:43.They left it late. A remarkably exciting game from

:20:44. > :20:44.Wasps. This last-minute try from prop

:20:45. > :20:47.Matt Mullan plus Jimmy Gopperth's conversion game them

:20:48. > :20:48.victory by 32-30. The game was a nine-try thriller,

:20:49. > :20:51.and it leaves top of the table with three games left

:20:52. > :20:57.before the play-offs. They don't make it easy for

:20:58. > :20:58.themselves. It's 27 years since the last Super

:20:59. > :21:01.Prix on the streets of Birmingham. Could motor racing

:21:02. > :21:03.be on the way back? Well, a window of opportunity has

:21:04. > :21:06.opened ever so slightly. There was Formula 3000 racing

:21:07. > :21:10.in Birmingham in the late '80s. It ended after complaints

:21:11. > :21:12.from people saying their lives but new rules mean that promoters

:21:13. > :21:16.can apply for permission The final decision would rest

:21:17. > :21:22.with the relevant council. Thanks very much for that, Dan. We

:21:23. > :21:26.return to the football pitch now. Now, do you remember

:21:27. > :21:28.the dog who created chaos Pictures of Dusty the beagle's

:21:29. > :21:32.overeager attempt to join in play at a Halesown Town match

:21:33. > :21:35.earlier this month. Well, after his poor

:21:36. > :21:40.behaviour, his owner, the Halesowen player Asa Charlton,

:21:41. > :21:43.decided to accept the offer of some dog obedience

:21:44. > :21:49.training for his beagle. They had a one-to-one

:21:50. > :21:53.session this afternoon - and are now with our reporter

:21:54. > :21:56.Laura May McMcmullan at the Dog's Well, Dusty here has had

:21:57. > :22:04.a quite a day of it, and it's hoped his naughty antics

:22:05. > :22:08.will soon be a thing of the past. He may have been able

:22:09. > :22:10.to dodge several players on the pitch last weekend,

:22:11. > :22:13.but, as we've seen today, he's not going to be able to get

:22:14. > :22:19.away with it for much longer. Man's best friend or not, Dusty

:22:20. > :22:29.is definitely not in the good books. Dusty!

:22:30. > :22:32.Come here, Dusty! It seems the one-year-old beagle

:22:33. > :22:36.has a bit of trouble when it comes to obeying instructions,

:22:37. > :22:39.and that was certainly evident during a Halesowen

:22:40. > :22:45.football match last weekend. I saw the dog coming on and I

:22:46. > :22:51.thought, that can't be my dog. And then I saw my mum,

:22:52. > :22:54.and my wife and my daughter running on the pitch,

:22:55. > :22:56.and it was just like, Not only did he carry

:22:57. > :23:00.out a pitch invasion, he managed to side-step several

:23:01. > :23:04.players and stop the match for several minutes,

:23:05. > :23:09.so it's time for him to come to "dog school" to end his

:23:10. > :23:14.disruptive behaviour. Dusty, as you will have seen

:23:15. > :23:17.on the field, was chasing a lot, so we have said to him,

:23:18. > :23:20.no more chasing. It's a big game for Dusty,

:23:21. > :23:22.basically - he's really enjoying that chase -

:23:23. > :23:25.but what we want to teach him Well, his mischievous manoeuvres

:23:26. > :23:34.certainly livened up the match, and he's been dubbed

:23:35. > :23:40."Britain's most disruptive dog", and with me now is Dusty's

:23:41. > :23:43.owner Asa Charlton. Asa, it might be for the wrong

:23:44. > :23:55.reasons, but can you believe What has the reaction been like?

:23:56. > :23:59.A fantastic reaction for Dusty and he has become a star. He has been

:24:00. > :24:00.incredibly naughty throughout the week and the game but it has been

:24:01. > :24:01.fantastic. In hindsight, should you have

:24:02. > :24:08.taken him to the match? He just wanted to get stuck in,

:24:09. > :24:13.probably? I'm not taking the blame because my

:24:14. > :24:16.mum took him by mistake. Fully with the help of the dogs trust and the

:24:17. > :24:23.training we will be able to take into a game soon -- hopefully.

:24:24. > :24:28.I wish you the best. Your next home game is against Nantwich town in ten

:24:29. > :24:33.days' time, so hopefully Dusty can be trusted. Otherwise you might just

:24:34. > :24:36.be shown a red card. I don't know, Laura, with that nifty

:24:37. > :24:42.work, I think Hill zone should sign him up.

:24:43. > :24:43.Most definitely. He is a bit of a

:24:44. > :24:49.and he has stolen the show. What a contrast from the weather at the

:24:50. > :24:50.weekend from summer and we have gone back to spring.

:24:51. > :24:55.Any chance of more of that warmth this week?

:24:56. > :25:00.Pushing our luck but not too bad. We could perhaps dream and visualise

:25:01. > :25:06.and reflect on the weekend's weather because these were the sunset

:25:07. > :25:10.scenes. From Worcestershire to Shropshire. The sun was strong

:25:11. > :25:13.enough to send temperatures up to 22 Celsius and staying here in

:25:14. > :25:18.Birmingham as well. The highest dollies across the region, making it

:25:19. > :25:22.the warmest day of the year so far. Incidentally, temperatures reached

:25:23. > :25:27.25.5 Celsius at Cambridge, the hottest place in the country. Today

:25:28. > :25:31.this was the scene in Staffordshire. Not too shabby. 20 blue sky and

:25:32. > :25:36.sunshine. That was not the case everywhere, but crucially it was the

:25:37. > :25:40.temperature that let us down today, by eight or 10 Celsius on

:25:41. > :25:46.yesterday's value, highs of around 11 or 12 Celsius. Considerably

:25:47. > :25:52.lower. However, we're looking at Easter weekend being a fresher, due

:25:53. > :25:57.to a westerly breeze, but plenty dry weather on offer and it will

:25:58. > :26:01.generally be settled this week. Could get some sunshine and showers

:26:02. > :26:04.around as well, but high pressure dominating. You can see it on the

:26:05. > :26:09.pressure chart right now. It will be situated out to the West and moving

:26:10. > :26:12.from west to south-west by the time we get in midweek. Cold front

:26:13. > :26:16.slipping down from the north-west, south-eastwards by the time we get

:26:17. > :26:22.Wednesday. This will be introducing some like outbreaks of rain. Other

:26:23. > :26:25.than that, some showers, as they say, but a mainly untitled picture.

:26:26. > :26:31.Let's take a look at this evening, and clear skies out there right now.

:26:32. > :26:35.Some late sunshine to round off the day, but clear spells continuing to

:26:36. > :26:39.tonight, and a bit of patchy cloud here and there, a dry picture.

:26:40. > :26:42.Through the early hours, cloud melting away, so temperatures could

:26:43. > :26:46.be in the south-west region laws of around five Celsius. A bit colder or

:26:47. > :26:52.cooler than the countryside, so a chilly start to tomorrow. Some

:26:53. > :26:54.sunshine and Fairweather cloud bubbling up from time to time,

:26:55. > :26:59.centring continuing into the afternoon and temperatures up to 14

:27:00. > :27:04.or 15 Celsius. That will be with a moderate westerly breeze. Heading

:27:05. > :27:08.further ahead into the week, looking at dry conditions, as I say,

:27:09. > :27:12.variable cloud on Thursday and the odd spot of rain on Friday. Thank

:27:13. > :27:16.you. Beautiful green shots in that photo. That is all for me and I will

:27:17. > :27:18.be back with your next news at half past ten. Join me then and have a

:27:19. > :27:19.good evening.
