:00:00. > :00:10.100 firefighters tackle a major incident at a warehouse

:00:11. > :00:11.on an industrial estate in Worcester.

:00:12. > :00:18.I've never seen so much smoke in my whole life.

:00:19. > :00:30.No one in the Worcester area can have missed the huge fire here

:00:31. > :00:33.today. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Targetting the tippers,

:00:34. > :00:35.a series of raids across to find those responsible

:00:36. > :00:38.for illegally dumping waste. Looking at the evidence, really

:00:39. > :00:41.looking for financial records, other information that will further our

:00:42. > :00:43.own investigation and really make sure that we can hold

:00:44. > :00:47.these people to account. Join me in Birmingham as the city

:00:48. > :00:52.honours the bravest of the brave. One man's mission to track

:00:53. > :00:57.and record the snakes which are disappearing

:00:58. > :00:59.from our countryside. And the cloud

:01:00. > :01:01.hasn't hampered temperatures today but the northwesterly wind

:01:02. > :01:02.will by the weekend. Who would have thought

:01:03. > :01:04.it was spring? But some of you could with some rain

:01:05. > :01:14.- all the details later. A major fire has

:01:15. > :01:18.destroyed a delivery company's Black smoke could be seen billowing,

:01:19. > :01:24.as far as away as Malvern. More than 100 firefighters

:01:25. > :01:26.were needed to bring the blaze under control,

:01:27. > :01:29.luckily no one was injured. Sarah Bishop has been

:01:30. > :01:41.speaking to those affected. The smoke was unreal, thick, black

:01:42. > :01:49.smoke. It was towering high in the sky. Never seen that much smoke in

:01:50. > :01:54.my whole life. Pretty scared. It could be seen from 30 miles away. A

:01:55. > :01:59.warehouse is the size of four football pitches up in smoke. When a

:02:00. > :02:03.fire crews arrived at 8:30am, they knew they had a fight on their

:02:04. > :02:10.hands. The first challenge was getting close to the building. With

:02:11. > :02:15.the amount of heat. We have had to rotate crews working in these

:02:16. > :02:18.arduous conditions. A member of staff initially spotted the

:02:19. > :02:28.beginnings of the fire and tried to but it -- put it out with a fire

:02:29. > :02:32.extinguisher. 150 staff were clear sorting and delivering bulky

:02:33. > :02:39.furniture. The only thing that matters is that there has been no

:02:40. > :02:44.loss of life. Stock can be replaced. Operations can resume. There is no

:02:45. > :02:49.loss of life. With the estate evacuated, the fire was the talk of

:02:50. > :02:56.Worcester. I could see flames from where I was. I got a bit of video on

:02:57. > :03:00.my phone. Shortly after, I saw a gas bottle explode and shoot into the

:03:01. > :03:05.sky. I wondered if we were going to get close down temporarily while

:03:06. > :03:10.they put the fire out. There are no immediate clues as to what caused

:03:11. > :03:11.the fire, an investigation is underway.

:03:12. > :03:14.And Sarah is at the warehouse this evening, so, Sarah,

:03:15. > :03:25.Things have scaled back quite a lot in the last few hours. Still quite a

:03:26. > :03:33.lot of activity with police and fire crews. Into the warehouse, you can

:03:34. > :03:37.see the tangled mass of steel. It buckles at 600 Celsius. It's still

:03:38. > :03:43.likely to be a couple of hundred degrees Celsius inside the warehouse

:03:44. > :03:47.tonight. Richard Jordan Watts, what will be happening tonight? We had a

:03:48. > :03:51.very severe fire and operations are now scaled back but crews will stay

:03:52. > :03:55.back damping down small pockets of fire to make sure the building is

:03:56. > :04:01.fully extinguished. What about the investigation. You've had

:04:02. > :04:05.investigators in today. How'd you go about finding the cause of the fire?

:04:06. > :04:10.It's a very competitive process because much of the building has

:04:11. > :04:14.been destroyed by fire. We will be talking to witnesses and looking at

:04:15. > :04:21.CCTV to establish the cause. Will take several days to establish what

:04:22. > :04:28.has happened today. A major incident. 150 staff safely evacuated

:04:29. > :04:29.and over 100 Hereford and Worcester firefighters safe tonight. Sarah,

:04:30. > :04:32.thank you for the update. More than

:04:33. > :04:35.40 police officers and officials from the environment agency,

:04:36. > :04:38.have carried out a series of raids - targeting people suspected

:04:39. > :04:40.of dumping waste illegally. Three addresses

:04:41. > :04:42.were searched in Staffordshire and another in Herefordshire,

:04:43. > :04:45.where a man was arrested. In the past twelve months,

:04:46. > :04:48.there's been a steep increase in illegal dumping in old factories

:04:49. > :04:51.and warehouses in the West Midlands - leading to big clean up costs

:04:52. > :04:54.and health hazards for locals. On an industrial estate

:04:55. > :04:57.in Staffordshire months of investigation lead

:04:58. > :05:08.to a swoop on a haulage yard. Police looking at the site, it seems

:05:09. > :05:10.as though there is nobody here at the moment. We are forcing entry to

:05:11. > :05:13.get in and seize evidence. This one of

:05:14. > :05:16.two raids on the Moorlands, there was a third in Stoke-on-Trent

:05:17. > :05:18.and a fourth in Ledbury in Herefordshire

:05:19. > :05:28.where a man was taken into custody. Today's raids are connected to

:05:29. > :05:31.illegal dumping of waste at 20 sites, waste amounting to in excess

:05:32. > :05:33.of 25,000 tonnes. Part of an operation

:05:34. > :05:36.intended to protect people and the places where they live

:05:37. > :05:46.from an increasingly common crime. It is a blight on the landscape. We

:05:47. > :05:51.are working closely with other agencies to limit it and manage

:05:52. > :05:55.ongoing sites to make sure any risks are mitigated. I can understand how

:05:56. > :06:00.the public feel, it is not nice to have near you. We are working with

:06:01. > :06:04.the Environment Agency to get on top of it as quickly as we can.

:06:05. > :06:07.Bales of rubbish wrapped in plastic lifted into place by unscrupulous

:06:08. > :06:09.gangs, paid by individuals or businesses,

:06:10. > :06:14.simply to get rid - no questions asked.

:06:15. > :06:19.Criminals can fill a warehouse just like this in a matter of days, even

:06:20. > :06:21.hours, with this type of waste. It's one of the biggest challenges

:06:22. > :06:25.facing the environment agency, they've described waste

:06:26. > :06:27.crime as the new narcotics and one they're urging all of us

:06:28. > :06:36.to play a part in tackling. Any business that produces waste,

:06:37. > :06:40.you need to know where it's going. Any landowner that is being

:06:41. > :06:46.approached to rent land, if it seems too good to be true, it almost

:06:47. > :06:50.certainly is. Take your responsibilities seriously. Culprits

:06:51. > :06:54.face a jail term of five years. Rewards can be lucrative but

:06:55. > :06:56.investigators say they will follow the money and where they can recover

:06:57. > :06:59.it. A jury's been sent out to consider

:07:00. > :07:01.verdicts in the trial accused of carrying out

:07:02. > :07:04."completely unnecessary" operations, Ian Paterson denies 20 counts

:07:05. > :07:09.of wounding with intent - against nine women and one man -

:07:10. > :07:14.between 1997 and 2011. The trial heard his alleged

:07:15. > :07:17.motive might have been Gerard Coyne, who's challenging

:07:18. > :07:22.Len McCluskey to lead Unite, as the union's

:07:23. > :07:27.West Midlands Regional Secretary. It's understood an email

:07:28. > :07:31.was sent to Unite members and staff informing them

:07:32. > :07:35.of Mr Coyne's suspension. The move comes as counting

:07:36. > :07:38.is about to get under way, DNA results have confirmed

:07:39. > :07:43.that a body found in woods, who went missing

:07:44. > :07:48.from near Bridgnorth last year. The 33-year-old

:07:49. > :07:50.was last seen leaving his home A man's body was discovered

:07:51. > :07:55.in woodland area, by a member An inquest into his death

:07:56. > :08:01.will open on Monday. The train company, London Midland,

:08:02. > :08:04.has been forced to lay on buses - after experiencing overcrowding

:08:05. > :08:06.on some services at Bromsgrove The company maintains that the

:08:07. > :08:13.bus service is a temporary measure, because of increased off-peak travel

:08:14. > :08:15.during the Easter holiday - but passengers using

:08:16. > :08:18.the new multi-million pound station I suppose, you come to a train

:08:19. > :08:26.station expecting a service that you're going to be getting

:08:27. > :08:29.on the train. We've got a fantastic

:08:30. > :08:31.new station and no trains. I mean, they are very

:08:32. > :08:33.short trains, at that. To be fair, it's been

:08:34. > :08:37.going a long time. We've got a lovely station

:08:38. > :08:39.but we don't appear people living in seven areas

:08:40. > :08:44.of the West Midlands will go to the polls, to select

:08:45. > :08:47.the West Midlands metro mayor. There's no gold chain and it's not

:08:48. > :08:58.about opening school fetes. This mayor will be

:08:59. > :09:00.a directly elected politician making decisions

:09:01. > :09:02.that impact the lives Think Giuliani, think BoJo,

:09:03. > :09:10.this person will represent us to the rest of the country

:09:11. > :09:17.and even the rest of the world. And you can watch Elizabeth Glinka's

:09:18. > :09:25.special report in full, on our Facebook page -

:09:26. > :09:26.facebook.com/midlandstoday But this afternoon

:09:27. > :09:28.all six candidates - actual size, have been

:09:29. > :09:30.facing our Political Editor, Patrick Burns, in a special debate

:09:31. > :09:39.programme, and Patrick joins me now. I know you don't want to give too

:09:40. > :09:44.much away but what can you tell us about it? A unique event. All six

:09:45. > :09:49.contenders are therefore it. The only televised debate of this kind

:09:50. > :09:54.coming at a unique moment even the backdrop of Brexit and all that

:09:55. > :09:58.follows and the general election as well. Inevitably, the candidates for

:09:59. > :10:01.the two biggest parties in this contest were vying with each other

:10:02. > :10:06.from the start over which of them is best placed to lead through this

:10:07. > :10:08.period of leaving the European Union.

:10:09. > :10:11.The government are looking particularly at areas like this that

:10:12. > :10:13.have got a manufacturing future and were thinking with them...

:10:14. > :10:17.That might be what they tell you that, if you read

:10:18. > :10:19.what they are doing, it's all about defending financial

:10:20. > :10:21.services, they don't say a word about manufacturing.

:10:22. > :10:24.They've invested in the London taxi company.

:10:25. > :10:26.They've invested in electric vehicles they're investing

:10:27. > :10:40.It's the Lib Dems who have made a signature issue of Brexit, or

:10:41. > :10:45.anti-Brexit, they have a clear anti-Brexit message. Their candidate

:10:46. > :10:50.who has staged a number of expositions at manufacturing parts

:10:51. > :10:53.of the country said she would be keen to give strong and clear

:10:54. > :10:56.leadership during this period. It isn't just about Birmingham

:10:57. > :10:59.alone, it's about the whole of the West Midlands,

:11:00. > :11:01.how, by coming together, we are Yeah, we've got lots of nice, glitzy

:11:02. > :11:06.stores and statues in the city centre but the districts,

:11:07. > :11:22.the outlying districts Plenty of subjects to cover but one

:11:23. > :11:27.of the mayor's major responsibilities is transport. What

:11:28. > :11:33.have they said about that? One of the main subjects is whether the M6

:11:34. > :11:38.toll road should be brought into public ownership. That is the policy

:11:39. > :11:41.of the cob unit candidate and the Labour candidate. But many have said

:11:42. > :11:45.that you cannot do that without considerable cost.

:11:46. > :11:50.For example, there's 115 kilometres of railway lines disused

:11:51. > :11:55.Bluntly speaking, round about the peak times,

:11:56. > :11:57.90-95% of HGVs already use the M6 toll.

:11:58. > :12:00.It will have a unfit but it is not going to solve

:12:01. > :12:14.I asked about voter fatigue but they said, we come first. What about

:12:15. > :12:16.political editor fatty? No rest for the wicked.

:12:17. > :12:19.And you can watch the full debate in a special programme

:12:20. > :12:22.A Mayor For The Midlands at 10.45 tonight, here on BBC1.

:12:23. > :12:24.Thanks for joining us on BBC Midlands Today.

:12:25. > :12:26.Also in tonight's programme - a chip off the old block,

:12:27. > :12:29.preparing for the European judo championships -

:12:30. > :12:32.coached by his Dad, a former Olympic medallist.

:12:33. > :12:34.We're tracking adders at a secret location

:12:35. > :12:44.in Herefordshire and this is the first one we found.

:12:45. > :12:48.A Midlands Air Ambulance aircrew, who saved the life of a pregnant

:12:49. > :12:52.woman after she'd been stabbed, are to receive a special award.

:12:53. > :12:55.12 Pride of Birmingham awards are being given out tonight,

:12:56. > :12:58.to recognise acts of bravery and compassion in the second city.

:12:59. > :13:02.There's a glitzy red carpet event at the University of Birmingham -

:13:03. > :13:17.Plenty to celebrate tonight. There is. Indeed. Plenty of excitable

:13:18. > :13:24.faces going into the beautiful great Hall at Birmingham University. It's

:13:25. > :13:28.a box of tissues they need with the courageous, inspiring stories of

:13:29. > :13:33.people from aged nine up to 80 winning a pride of Birmingham award,

:13:34. > :13:37.in its fourth year, going from strength to strength. Albee hearing

:13:38. > :13:43.about some of those inspirational stories celebrated here tonight.

:13:44. > :13:48.March 2016 and the Midlands air ambulance received a call to visit a

:13:49. > :13:51.woman who has been repeatedly stabbed.

:13:52. > :13:54.40-year-old Natalie Querioz, who was eight months pregnant,

:13:55. > :13:59.was attacked by her partner in Sutton Coldfield.

:14:00. > :14:04.We suddenly have not one life that was in danger but too.

:14:05. > :14:07.Thanks to the swift response of the air crew based at Cosford,

:14:08. > :14:13.The medical team are honoured tonight

:14:14. > :14:24.I wouldn't be here and my daughter wouldn't be here if it wasn't for

:14:25. > :14:28.the air ambulance and that's a fact. I ran up to the tunnel and there was

:14:29. > :14:30.a chap standing in the middle of the road.

:14:31. > :14:35.For outstanding bravery, great granddad Anthony Mathers

:14:36. > :14:37.who fended off a car jacking gang armed

:14:38. > :14:39.with a gun and knife in Acocks Green last November.

:14:40. > :14:54.I had blood running down my arm. I didn't feel scared at all.

:14:55. > :14:56.Bradley Addison was a promising footballer,

:14:57. > :14:58.who played with Aston Villa's youth academy,

:14:59. > :15:01.But he was diagnosed with the life-limiting condition,

:15:02. > :15:06.He took up powerchair football and has gone on to raise

:15:07. > :15:09.tens of thousands of pounds to help other sufferers.

:15:10. > :15:16.I would like to play for England but I don't know if that will happen. I

:15:17. > :15:23.would like to win, either a cup or a leak soon. Bradley, you are amazing.

:15:24. > :15:25.Mummy loves you and you are the best.

:15:26. > :15:28.Facing fear in whatever guise - but all showing immense

:15:29. > :15:40.We have noddy Holder, Ross Kemp and others walking the red carpet but it

:15:41. > :15:45.is really all about people like this man here. Founder of the Langerak

:15:46. > :15:56.Association here in Birmingham tonight. Unexpected, no doubt? Of

:15:57. > :16:02.course. One thing you have done is provide 5000 meals a week for

:16:03. > :16:09.homeless people. That's right. To be honest, I didn't expect it at all.

:16:10. > :16:15.Absolutely overwhelmed. You looked gobsmacked. Have good awards

:16:16. > :16:20.ceremony. Let's talk to the editor of the Birmingham mail. Mark, what

:16:21. > :16:25.is it about this event that makes it so special to people in the eyes of

:16:26. > :16:30.the city now? It is something that Birmingham doesn't do often enough

:16:31. > :16:33.which is to celebrate ordinary me is doing extraordinary things. This

:16:34. > :16:42.year, we've taken the award to the next level Cosby want to do even

:16:43. > :16:48.more to celebrate those heroes. How on earth do you select the bravest

:16:49. > :16:53.of the brave? How do you deny someone an award and give someone

:16:54. > :17:00.another? It is not about denying people awards, it is about telling

:17:01. > :17:04.stories. These are the very best stories we can find, told in the

:17:05. > :17:08.best way. In the Birmingham mail we've been telling their stories for

:17:09. > :17:14.a long time. Thank you very much indeed. Enjoy your evening. The 12

:17:15. > :17:16.winners will be short listed for the daily Mirror pride of Britain awards

:17:17. > :17:18.later in the year. Some sad news

:17:19. > :17:20.from the world of athletics. The Olympic high jump

:17:21. > :17:22.silver medallist, Germaine Mason, has died in a motorbike

:17:23. > :17:24.crash in Jamaica. 34-year-old Mason

:17:25. > :17:26.spent much of his sporting after switching nationality

:17:27. > :17:31.to represent Great Britain. He was competing for

:17:32. > :17:33.the Birchfield Harriers club at the time he won the silver

:17:34. > :17:38.in Beijing in 2008. The Staffordshire swimmer,

:17:39. > :17:42.Adam Peaty, says he was frustrated as he won the 50 metre breast stroke

:17:43. > :17:54.title at the British Championships. He finished six hundredths of a

:17:55. > :17:58.second outside the record in the final. It was his second gold medal

:17:59. > :18:00.after the 100 metres title on Tuesday.

:18:01. > :18:03.The British judo team start out on the road to the Olympics

:18:04. > :18:06.in Tokyo in 2020 this week - as they compete at the European

:18:07. > :18:11.They've been preparing for the first major tournament

:18:12. > :18:14.at their performance centre in Walsall.

:18:15. > :18:18.And for one of the team - it will be a real family affair.

:18:19. > :18:21.23-year-old Brummie Max Stewart is preparing for his first European

:18:22. > :18:27.judo championships and he couldn't have a better mentor.

:18:28. > :18:30.Because his coach is dad Dennis, an Olympic bronze

:18:31. > :18:35.medallist at the games in Seoul almost 30 years ago.

:18:36. > :18:43.I don't really look at it like pressure. More of a competition or

:18:44. > :18:48.challenge. If he has a medal somewhere, I want to do the same or

:18:49. > :18:53.better. I always believed he could do it. Seeing him getting there is

:18:54. > :18:56.ticking the box is. I spent him to do it. The other side of me is quite

:18:57. > :18:58.proud and looking forward to it. British Judo have

:18:59. > :19:00.high hopes for Max. He's moved up a weight and is

:19:01. > :19:11.thriving against the bigger men. The 81 kilo category was more

:19:12. > :19:18.tactical and here there are more throws. It is more suited to my

:19:19. > :19:21.style. This could be the first real opportunity to see who will be the

:19:22. > :19:25.big stars of Tokyo 2020. Those promising younger

:19:26. > :19:27.players include 20-year-old Officially she's still a junior

:19:28. > :19:32.but impressive performances have seen her given an opportunity

:19:33. > :19:44.to mix it with the seniors I've done quite a few seniors this

:19:45. > :19:49.year. Getting up to that level before so I can get a feel for it

:19:50. > :19:52.and not chucking me into the deep end straightaway.

:19:53. > :19:55.For all of them the big motivation is the 2020 Olympics.

:19:56. > :19:58.Japan is the spiritual home of judo and no-one wants to miss

:19:59. > :20:00.the opportunity to compete in the Tokyo games.

:20:01. > :20:01.Nick Clitheroe BBC Midlands Today Walsall.

:20:02. > :20:04.A hoard of gold coins found stashed in a old piano in Shropshire,

:20:05. > :20:06.has been officially declared as treasure.

:20:07. > :20:09.The discovery was made before Christmas, when the piano's current

:20:10. > :20:14.The stash hasn't been valued yet - but it's said to be worth

:20:15. > :20:17.The tuner who found the hoard and Bishops Castle Community College,

:20:18. > :20:20.which owns the piano, will share a reward.

:20:21. > :20:28.I can't say that I was not perturbed. It was only when we got

:20:29. > :20:34.back to the office and realise there was a very large quantity of gold

:20:42. > :20:43.Because snakes - and more particularly adders -

:21:33. > :21:37.Nigel's tagging them for a National Trust study.

:21:38. > :21:49.I've been passionate about them since I was a small boy. They are

:22:00. > :22:05.nationally for six years it's the first time they've

:22:06. > :22:13.seen this behaviour. I'm very proud to see this. It's one

:22:18. > :22:21.And later we find one of the two males who were fighting

:22:22. > :22:28.There's still no sign of females though.

:22:29. > :22:33.But within hours, patience pays dividends...

:22:34. > :22:40.This is only the third female snake they've managed to tag in this area.

:22:48. > :22:55.Adder numbers are falling due to factors like urbanisation.

:22:56. > :22:59.But this female is a strong healthy half metre long.

:23:33. > :23:33.for a dry fortnight. Absolutely, a calm one too -

:23:34. > :23:38.we've done well so far and that's in spite

:23:39. > :23:43.of the cloud today - All it took was a bit of blue

:23:44. > :23:59.sky to raise our hopes We could even see some

:24:26. > :24:27.to tonight then - the odd clearer spells

:24:28. > :24:31.here and there but a predominantly cloudy picture with some
