:00:08. > :00:09.Good evening. and Emily Thornberry of Labour.

:00:10. > :00:11.Police have increased patrols on buses in the West Midlands

:00:12. > :00:14.in an attempt to reassure the public, after a man

:00:15. > :00:17.was stabbed to death on a bus in Birmingham last night.

:00:18. > :00:20.The victim, who was in his 30s, was attacked on the top deck

:00:21. > :00:23.of the bus in the Handsworth area of the city

:00:24. > :00:31.Searching for evidence in the Handsworth area

:00:32. > :00:36.Police are trying to work out why a man was stabbed to death

:00:37. > :00:44.while travelling on a bus in a seemingly random attack.

:00:45. > :00:50.Police believe the two men didn't know each other. It was a chance

:00:51. > :00:55.altercation. They say the victim was already on the bus and then the

:00:56. > :00:58.other man got on and sort of us at him. At some point a verbal

:00:59. > :01:00.altercation started which turned into a physical one, knife was

:01:01. > :01:03.produced in the victim was stabbed. When emergency services got

:01:04. > :01:06.to Rookery Road at around 10:45pm last night, they found the man,

:01:07. > :01:08.a 35-year-old from Smethwick, slumped over one of the seats

:01:09. > :01:19.on the top deck of the bus. We know there were five people sat

:01:20. > :01:24.around with the two males on the top deck and we managed to speak to one

:01:25. > :01:29.of the people. The other four people left the bus shortly after the

:01:30. > :01:33.altercation. It might be they didn't realise how serious the matter was

:01:34. > :01:36.and they just wanted to get out of the way which is understandable but

:01:37. > :01:41.I would ask them to come forward and speak to the police.

:01:42. > :01:43.Extra patrols were added to buses across the city today,

:01:44. > :01:46.including the 11A, the route the man was travelling when he was stabbed.

:01:47. > :01:49.The aim of officers from the West Midlands Safer Travel Partnership

:01:50. > :01:58.In Handsworth, concern too from people living close by.

:01:59. > :02:05.It does worry me a lot. What happens if I'm on the bus with my children

:02:06. > :02:14.and somebody gets stabbed? It's very scary. Everybody in this road is

:02:15. > :02:17.worried about it. It is absolutely terrible. If you can't be safe on

:02:18. > :02:23.the bus way can you be safe? Police says they're looking

:02:24. > :02:25.for a black man aged between 25 and 30 with short dreadlocks,

:02:26. > :02:28.in connection with the murder. He was last seen wearing a puffa

:02:29. > :02:30.jacket, had headphones over a baseball cap and was

:02:31. > :02:33.carrying a duffel type bag. Worcestershire children's

:02:34. > :02:35.services is inadequate. A report from OFSTED showed

:02:36. > :02:37.vulnerable children are at risk It's the fourth local authority

:02:38. > :02:42.in the West Midlands to have their children's services

:02:43. > :02:45.department rated inadequate. Joan Cummins is in

:02:46. > :03:09.Worcester for us now. As you say the findings were

:03:10. > :03:12.inadequate but they said they also discovered widespread and serious

:03:13. > :03:19.failures. Some of the reasons for that have been identified as a high

:03:20. > :03:23.staff turnover and overreliance on agency staff and also a surge in

:03:24. > :03:30.demand for the specialist services that are provided by children's

:03:31. > :03:35.services. The NSPCC has said it is concerned the situation in

:03:36. > :03:39.Worcestershire remains fragile. To get inadequate on child protection

:03:40. > :03:44.on your work with care leavers, on your work with children in care and

:03:45. > :03:49.your overall leadership is a damning indictment so lots more work for was

:03:50. > :03:56.to share to do and our view is keep the focus on the child and outcomes

:03:57. > :04:00.for the child and learn from other authorities where they have turned

:04:01. > :04:07.things around successfully. What has been the response from the council?

:04:08. > :04:13.The council are taking this report seriously. They say that Ofsted have

:04:14. > :04:20.identified that some progress is being made. But the woman in charge

:04:21. > :04:23.of children's services and the entire council in Worcestershire

:04:24. > :04:29.says she simply wanted to apologise to children and their families for

:04:30. > :04:32.not doing good enough. The thing I would like to say first and foremost

:04:33. > :04:40.is sorry to those children and families who feel they have been let

:04:41. > :04:47.down by the services. My commitment is to ensure that we pick up the

:04:48. > :04:58.pace of that plan and we are confident the leadership we have put

:04:59. > :05:03.in place is the right leadership. The council say that from April the

:05:04. > :05:07.going to invest an extra ?3.5 million specifically in children's

:05:08. > :05:10.services which they hope will improve the situation.

:05:11. > :05:13.A cancer surgeon has pleaded not guilty to fraud after claiming

:05:14. > :05:15.that he had performed 88 keyhole surgery operations.

:05:16. > :05:17.Sudip Sarker was alleged to have made the false claim

:05:18. > :05:20.during an interview for a consultant job at the Alexandra Hospital

:05:21. > :05:24.Mr Sarker was suspended a year later and eventually

:05:25. > :05:29.dismissed, following concerns about his surgical ability.

:05:30. > :05:32.A young mother has received abuse online after posting video of giving

:05:33. > :05:34.crucial physiotherapy to her new born baby.

:05:35. > :05:37.Sam Carrier's daughter Daisy has cystic fibrosis and needs a type

:05:38. > :05:41.of vigorous massaging called "percussion" every day.

:05:42. > :05:45.She put video of the technique on social media to try to raise

:05:46. > :05:50.But the pictures sparked hatred and abuse.

:05:51. > :06:02.You do it with your hand to try and create a pocket of air. It doesn't

:06:03. > :06:04.hurt at all. It's called percussion and experts

:06:05. > :06:07.say it can be the difference between life and death for 15

:06:08. > :06:09.week old Daisy. She has cystic fibrosis

:06:10. > :06:11.and the physio her mum Sam gives her twice a day helps break up

:06:12. > :06:26.mucus on her chest which could The first time we started doing this

:06:27. > :06:32.she was three weeks old and they came to our house to show us and

:06:33. > :06:37.they started doing it and I just cried. It was devastating to see but

:06:38. > :06:43.this is what you have to do to try and keep your children alive. She is

:06:44. > :06:45.happy all the time. She is a smiley baby.

:06:46. > :06:48.Daisy was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis just a few weeks

:06:49. > :06:52.It was Christmas Eve and Sam decided to post a physio session

:06:53. > :06:55.on her Facebook page, in a bid to raise public awareness.

:06:56. > :07:04.But by Boxing Day the trolling had begun.

:07:05. > :07:13.It had loads of views and we started getting nasty messages and death

:07:14. > :07:19.threats saying we should be killed. Lots of foul language which I can't

:07:20. > :07:20.repeat. We got told we were child abusers and we were going to break

:07:21. > :07:22.her ribs. She's never replied to the trollers

:07:23. > :07:25.except to forward details of cystic fibrosis, which affects one in every

:07:26. > :07:28.2,500 babies in the UK. Historically, half of all

:07:29. > :07:30.children with the condition Sam's hopeful new research and fund

:07:31. > :07:39.raising will change that. Landlocked Birmingham is the last

:07:40. > :07:42.place you would expect to find But today a diver has been hard

:07:43. > :07:46.at work under the city, making sure our canal network

:07:47. > :07:48.is running smoothly. Here's our Environment

:07:49. > :07:52.Correspondent, David Gregory-Kumar. This is the Grand Union Canal

:07:53. > :07:56.on the east side of Birmingham. But the team won't be

:07:57. > :08:01.diving the canal. They're going much, much deeper

:08:02. > :08:05.under the canal into the hidden network of pipes and culverts that

:08:06. > :08:16.keep our canals working. The canal and river trust employee

:08:17. > :08:22.divers across the country to undertake specialised work. There is

:08:23. > :08:23.a lot of infrastructure below the canals the general public don't know

:08:24. > :08:25.about. Today's dive is about

:08:26. > :08:27.checking on some vital But the diving will only start once

:08:28. > :08:31.the diver gets down this 15 metre shaft to reach the water

:08:32. > :08:43.inside the culvert. That black shape is that bundle that

:08:44. > :08:47.going to block of the covert so they can Trinidad the pubs. The diver

:08:48. > :08:57.himself is going to in the about five hours today. We have to get all

:08:58. > :08:59.their out of it. It is buoyant under the water.

:09:00. > :09:02.It's hard work but finally the bung goes in and the team up top

:09:03. > :09:07.But why would anyone want to work underwater

:09:08. > :09:16.I couldn't see myself doing anything else for a living. It is not

:09:17. > :09:19.everyone's cup of tea though. So how is the Victorian

:09:20. > :09:27.engineering doing? Surprisingly good because it has not

:09:28. > :09:32.been exposed to the frost and whatever. They covered itself tends

:09:33. > :09:35.to be in a good condition. The water and the silt in the bottom has

:09:36. > :09:36.helped preserve the state of the brickwork.

:09:37. > :09:38.And with care like this, this vital hidden network should

:09:39. > :09:42.easily celebrate its double century.

:09:43. > :09:46.I'll leave you with the weather forecast from Shefali.

:09:47. > :09:57.Good evening. A beautiful selection of weather Watchers pictures to give

:09:58. > :10:04.you a picture summary of what's been going on today. Dense freezing frog

:10:05. > :10:07.patches which lifted to give us decent spells of sunshine across the

:10:08. > :10:15.region. That led to a lovely sunset and from that sunset we saw the fog

:10:16. > :10:19.reforming. We may do all of this all over again by tomorrow but we have

:10:20. > :10:23.at the moment got warnings in place the fog and also for ice.

:10:24. > :10:31.Temperatures will start the planet. In rural spots cabbages will fall

:10:32. > :10:38.below freezing. Dense freezing fog in the south-east corner so

:10:39. > :10:43.Warwickshire and around Coventry. Along the 42 and a 45 routes, that

:10:44. > :10:49.is with you will see the fog tomorrow morning. Elsewhere

:10:50. > :10:57.temperatures above freezing. A cloudy start to the day tomorrow.

:10:58. > :11:02.Foggy in places. With that frost and ice on untreated stretches of road.

:11:03. > :11:03.Cloud will dominate the eastern half of the region with the sunshine in

:11:04. > :11:18.the West. For all of us, it'll get colder and

:11:19. > :11:20.then milder again come the
