:00:00. > :00:07.There are claims that large numbers of officers at Birmingham Prison

:00:08. > :00:11.have been leaving their jobs, or going sick, because of increasing

:00:12. > :00:17.Last month inmates rioted, gaining control over four wings,

:00:18. > :00:21.starting fires and causing damage estimated at more than ?2 million.

:00:22. > :00:25.Two separate investigations continue into what happened.

:00:26. > :00:28.Here's our Special Correspondent, Peter Wilson.

:00:29. > :00:30.Birmingham prison is one of the oldest in the country.

:00:31. > :00:32.Last month saw the worst riots and disturbances

:00:33. > :00:38.Prison Officers sprayed with fire hoses, missiles and paint.

:00:39. > :00:42.The former chairman of the Prison Officers'

:00:43. > :00:49.claims the riot was a timebomb waiting to go off.

:00:50. > :00:51.The levels of violence that happen in that prison every day

:00:52. > :01:00.I have seen staff badly assaulted, I've seen staff assaulted

:01:01. > :01:03.to the point they no longer wish to come back to work.

:01:04. > :01:11.That whole L-shaped block was quite soon under control of prisoners.

:01:12. > :01:15.He'd worked at Birmingham prison for 30 years and claims cuts

:01:16. > :01:21.in prison staff numbers was a factor in last month's riot.

:01:22. > :01:24.Because of the lack of opportunity to go to the gym,

:01:25. > :01:27.because of staff shortages, staff absences, staff illnesses,

:01:28. > :01:31.facilities were put on the wings, weightlifting facilities.

:01:32. > :01:38.During the riot, those weightlifting facilities,

:01:39. > :01:40.those metal bars, were used to smash down

:01:41. > :01:46.20 years ago I made a documentary about the Victorian

:01:47. > :01:51.In 1997 inmates used bed sheets and toilet paper to pass secret

:01:52. > :02:00."I've got your trusted half ounce here."

:02:01. > :02:04.Today inmates are using drones and mobile phones.

:02:05. > :02:08.Tonight G4S praised staff bravery during the riots and denied that

:02:09. > :02:12.large numbers of people are going off sick.

:02:13. > :02:15.Post 16th December there was a rise in sickness and

:02:16. > :02:18.that is coming back down to the levels before that

:02:19. > :02:22.and in terms of staff leaving, we have had some

:02:23. > :02:30.staff who have left the business, but not just in...

:02:31. > :02:34.What is important to recognise is that at Birmingham over

:02:35. > :02:37.two thirds of our staffing group are still the same staff

:02:38. > :02:41.An official report into the riot at Birmingham prison is

:02:42. > :02:46.expected to be delivered to the government next week.

:02:47. > :02:49.A couple who murdered their flatmate for their own perverted pleasure

:02:50. > :02:52.are tonight beginning a minimum jail sentence of 26 years each.

:02:53. > :02:56.Bethany Hill was discovered in a flat in Stratford

:02:57. > :02:59.upon Avon last year, her throat had been slashed.

:03:00. > :03:01.Sentencing Jack Williams and his transgender partner

:03:02. > :03:05.Kayleigh Woods, the Judge concluded it was a sadistic killing.

:03:06. > :03:07.Joan Cummins is at Warwick Crown Court where the three

:03:08. > :03:26.Well, often the jury were shown some quite shocking evidence from the

:03:27. > :03:29.murder of Bethany Hill last year at a very small flat in

:03:30. > :03:34.Stratford-upon-Avon. They were shown the bathroom where her throat was

:03:35. > :03:40.repeatedly cut. They were also shown a fetish doll which had had its

:03:41. > :03:45.wrists bound and its mouth gagged. This is exactly the torture that

:03:46. > :03:50.Bethany was put through by her killers, Jack Williams and Kayleigh

:03:51. > :03:55.Woods. Bethany had had a very brief relationship with Jack Williams when

:03:56. > :03:59.she was much younger and almost fatally she had introduced him to

:04:00. > :04:04.her friend, Kayleigh Woods, who had been born a boy but was now living

:04:05. > :04:09.as a woman and was in a relationship with Jack Williams. The judge said

:04:10. > :04:15.that he couldn't rule out the possibility that both of these

:04:16. > :04:21.defendants had killed Bethany for their own sadistic pleasure and

:04:22. > :04:26.there could been a sexual behind it. What has Bethany 's family said?

:04:27. > :04:29.They have maintained a very dignified appearance at court. Today

:04:30. > :04:35.they should a statement, they ask for the media not to bother them

:04:36. > :04:41.anymore. What they did say was that there were no words to describe the

:04:42. > :04:46.pain that these two evil individuals had put them through. They said that

:04:47. > :04:49.Bethany was a much loved daughter, she had a great future ahead of her

:04:50. > :04:55.and they just couldn't explain how they felt knowing that she would

:04:56. > :04:57.never grow up or grow old and they said to them she would always remain

:04:58. > :05:00.a diamond in the sky. Thank you. A 25-year-old man has been arrested

:05:01. > :05:03.on suspicion of murder after a fatal Leon Barrett-Hazle was travelling

:05:04. > :05:08.on the top deck of the Number 11A in Handsworth on Monday evening

:05:09. > :05:10.when he was attacked. The arrested man surrendered himself

:05:11. > :05:18.earlier this afternoon. The Conservative Party have

:05:19. > :05:21.chosen their candidate for the Stoke Central by-election

:05:22. > :05:23.on February 23rd. Labour are expected to announce

:05:24. > :05:25.their candidate later tonight. Councillor Jack Brereton,

:05:26. > :05:27.who is 25, will stand The seat became vacant

:05:28. > :05:30.following the resignation of Labour's Tristram Hunt

:05:31. > :05:35.earlier this month. West Midlands Ambulance Service has

:05:36. > :05:37.become the first NHS Foundation Trust to be rated

:05:38. > :05:40.outstanding by the Care Inspectors rated it the best

:05:41. > :05:46.across all ten ambulance trusts in England, it's continually met

:05:47. > :05:48.the required response It serves 26 NHS Trusts and responds

:05:49. > :06:01.to around 3,000 999 calls a day. The son of a woman from Tamworth

:06:02. > :06:05.who was killed in a terror attack in Tunisia last year has told

:06:06. > :06:07.an inquest knowing she was with someone who made her happy

:06:08. > :06:10.gave the family comfort. Suzanne Davey and her partner,

:06:11. > :06:12.Scott Chalkley, were among 38 people killed in a grenade and gunfire

:06:13. > :06:16.attack on the beach resort Is in as far as the fact that my mum

:06:17. > :06:24.has been killed, to be honest, when it does reopen and we do come

:06:25. > :06:28.in to these inquests it's sort of a surreal moment

:06:29. > :06:30.when you are sitting in the court room and you are

:06:31. > :06:32.thinking, is that real? For us it is nice that it can be put

:06:33. > :06:36.to bed and we can sort of... Of course it is important,

:06:37. > :06:40.it is our mum, but is it Probably not

:06:41. > :06:43.because in our lives In the last 18 months 850 assaults

:06:44. > :06:48.were reported on police officers across Worcestershire,

:06:49. > :06:49.Herefordshire and Shropshire. Now a new initiative has been

:06:50. > :06:54.launched to try and reduce The area's Police and Crime

:06:55. > :06:58.Commissioner says the new schemed, called Behind the Badge,

:06:59. > :07:00.is aimed at changing For many officers, dealing

:07:01. > :07:04.with the threat of violence And attacks don't just happen

:07:05. > :07:09.in our inner cities. PC Sherry Clifford was just five

:07:10. > :07:11.weeks out of training when she was kicked in the face

:07:12. > :07:15.outside a club in Evesham. The pain was excruciating,

:07:16. > :07:18.it knocked me back and knocked me out for a few seconds and then

:07:19. > :07:22.it was more, I have to get back up I had a full-on kick to the face,

:07:23. > :07:27.I lost a tooth and a large fracture down the side,

:07:28. > :07:32.had a massively swollen face The new campaign aims to highlight

:07:33. > :07:38.the impact of violence on those People forget that I'm

:07:39. > :07:41.going home to my family, my partner and I don't want to go

:07:42. > :07:45.home black and blue. People just see the uniform now

:07:46. > :07:48.and they have stopped seeing us. We are a very large rural force,

:07:49. > :07:52.we have police officers out there, sometimes back-up can be a long way

:07:53. > :07:58.away, I want to make sure In 2016 the force introduced body

:07:59. > :08:03.cameras which have been shown to reduce attacks in other parts

:08:04. > :08:07.of the country. And from day one officers receive

:08:08. > :08:10.this sort of training. National figures show that there's

:08:11. > :08:13.an attack on a police officer every 22 minutes

:08:14. > :08:16.and here in the West Mercia area over an 18 month period

:08:17. > :08:18.there were 850 assaults. But however well trained,

:08:19. > :08:23.not everyone trusts the police Officers have suffered

:08:24. > :08:32.a variety of injuries, teeth being knocked

:08:33. > :08:33.out, broken bones. It can be extremely traumatic

:08:34. > :08:36.and officers then have to live with the injuries they may have

:08:37. > :08:38.suffered during a shift. The hope is the number of those

:08:39. > :09:14.injuries can be reduced. A homeless hostel which was opened

:09:15. > :09:18.as a two month trial a year ago in Stoke is still taking in rough

:09:19. > :09:21.sleepers, thanks to a former New figures show the number

:09:22. > :09:24.of rough sleepers Former footballer Lou Macari helped

:09:25. > :09:28.set up the hostel in the Potteries. He continued campaigning

:09:29. > :09:30.to keep it going by setting Birmingham and the Black Country

:09:31. > :09:33.has the largest Sikh Now they're being asked

:09:34. > :09:37.to share their stories of migration. The project is being led

:09:38. > :09:39.by the Nishkam Civic Association. It's looking to create a collective

:09:40. > :09:42.picture of what happened, That generation is getting older

:09:43. > :09:45.and as they are passing, they're taking those stories

:09:46. > :09:47.with them so unless they have actually told you something

:09:48. > :09:50.personally, you won't know who these people were and what they

:09:51. > :09:52.contributed to the region. Are we in for more frost

:09:53. > :09:59.tomorrow morning? Yes, it is getting very chilly out

:10:00. > :10:04.there. We had some cloud and a fog today but it was quite pleasant end

:10:05. > :10:10.to the day. The cloud is coming from the east and bringing in colder air

:10:11. > :10:12.so it will be a cold night tonight. Already our temperatures falling

:10:13. > :10:17.away and we will see a widespread frost. Anything that falls from the

:10:18. > :10:21.sky could fall as a flake of snow but temperatures dipped to about

:10:22. > :10:24.minus two. The chilly start the day tomorrow with high pressure in

:10:25. > :10:29.charge but we are drawing in the cold air from Monier confident so it

:10:30. > :10:38.will be a cold and raw feeling day. The limited brightness. A cloudy day

:10:39. > :10:41.and it could be thick enough to squeeze out some snow. Right to buy

:10:42. > :10:43.the end of the day across the South Midlands but it will be cloudy and

:10:44. > :10:46.grey. These are the actual temperatures but it will feel more

:10:47. > :10:51.like minus five. A very cold day on the way. On Friday the added

:10:52. > :10:54.complication of rain and that means the colder services could have a

:10:55. > :10:56.risk of ice. More information on all of that in the National forecast

:10:57. > :11:00.next. This is the outlook. showers. A little less cold. Let's

:11:01. > :11:07.take a look at the Outlook towards the weekend.

:11:08. > :11:12.Good evening. If you think it was cold today, for many it will be

:11:13. > :11:16.colder still tomorrow. Cold even when we have the sunshine today.

:11:17. > :11:19.This was one of the wonderful weather watcher pictures we had sent

:11:20. > :11:26.in from Cornwall. It contrasts with a cloudy and foggy eastern half of

:11:27. > :11:29.the country, and a bank of cloud. Still foggy, but it is starting to

:11:30. > :11:33.lift. It is being pushed north and west, this bank of cloud. That will

:11:34. > :11:37.continue through the night. We will still have some fog sitting on the

:11:38. > :11:42.hills. Even with the cloud, it will be a cold night, with temperatures

:11:43. > :11:46.away from the far north and west falling to freezing. In the

:11:47. > :11:50.countryside, well below freezing. And on the wind and it will feel

:11:51. > :11:55.better, it already feels better. Giving us some freezing drizzle and

:11:56. > :11:56.snow as well. Although the fog will not be as extensive as
