:00:52. > :01:00.I have seen staff badly assaulted, I've seen staff assaulted
:01:01. > :01:03.to the point they no longer wish to come back to work.
:01:04. > :01:11.That whole L-shaped block was quite soon under control of prisoners.
:01:12. > :01:15.He'd worked at Birmingham prison for 30 years and claims cuts
:01:16. > :01:21.in prison staff numbers was a factor in last month's riot.
:01:22. > :01:24.Because of the lack of opportunity to go to the gym,
:01:25. > :01:27.because of staff shortages, staff absences, staff illnesses,
:01:28. > :01:31.facilities were put on the wings, weightlifting facilities.
:01:32. > :01:38.During the riot, those weightlifting facilities,
:01:39. > :01:40.those metal bars, were used to smash down
:01:41. > :01:46.20 years ago I made a documentary about the Victorian
:01:47. > :01:51.In 1997 inmates used bed sheets and toilet paper to pass secret
:01:52. > :02:00."I've got your trusted half ounce here."
:02:01. > :02:04.Today inmates are using drones and mobile phones.
:02:05. > :02:08.Tonight G4S praised staff bravery during the riots and denied that
:02:09. > :02:12.large numbers of people are going off sick.
:02:13. > :02:15.Post 16th December there was a rise in sickness and
:02:16. > :02:18.that is coming back down to the levels before that
:02:19. > :02:22.and in terms of staff leaving, we have had some
:02:23. > :02:30.staff who have left the business, but not just in...
:02:31. > :02:34.What is important to recognise is that at Birmingham over
:02:35. > :02:37.two thirds of our staffing group are still the same staff
:02:38. > :02:41.An official report into the riot at Birmingham prison is
:02:42. > :02:46.expected to be delivered to the government next week.
:02:47. > :02:49.A couple who murdered their flatmate for their own perverted pleasure
:02:50. > :02:52.are tonight beginning a minimum jail sentence of 26 years each.
:02:53. > :02:56.Bethany Hill was discovered in a flat in Stratford
:02:57. > :02:59.upon Avon last year, her throat had been slashed.
:03:00. > :03:01.Sentencing Jack Williams and his transgender partner
:03:02. > :03:05.Kayleigh Woods, the Judge concluded it was a sadistic killing.

:03:08. > :03:26.Well, often the jury were shown some quite shocking evidence from the
:03:27. > :03:29.murder of Bethany Hill last year at a very small flat in
:03:30. > :03:34.Stratford-upon-Avon. They were shown the bathroom where her throat was
:03:35. > :03:40.repeatedly cut. They were also shown a fetish doll which had had its
:03:41. > :03:45.wrists bound and its mouth gagged. This is exactly the torture that
:03:46. > :03:50.Bethany was put through by her killers, Jack Williams and Kayleigh
:03:51. > :03:55.Woods. Bethany had had a very brief relationship with Jack Williams when
:03:56. > :03:59.she was much younger and almost fatally she had introduced him to
:04:00. > :04:04.her friend, Kayleigh Woods, who had been born a boy but was now living
:04:05. > :04:09.as a woman and was in a relationship with Jack Williams. The judge said
:04:10. > :04:15.that he couldn't rule out the possibility that both of these
:04:16. > :04:21.defendants had killed Bethany for their own sadistic pleasure and
:04:22. > :04:26.there could been a sexual behind it. What has Bethany 's family said?
:04:27. > :04:29.They have maintained a very dignified appearance at court. Today
:04:30. > :04:35.they should a statement, they ask for the media not to bother them
:04:36. > :04:41.anymore. What they did say was that there were no words to describe the
:04:42. > :04:46.pain that these two evil individuals had put them through. They said that
:04:47. > :04:49.Bethany was a much loved daughter, she had a great future ahead of her
:04:50. > :04:55.and they just couldn't explain how they felt knowing that she would
:04:56. > :04:57.never grow up or grow old and they said to them she would always remain

:07:59. > :08:03.cameras which have been shown to reduce attacks in other parts
:08:04. > :08:07.of the country. And from day one officers receive
:08:08. > :08:10.this sort of training. National figures show that there's
:08:11. > :08:13.an attack on a police officer every 22 minutes
:08:14. > :08:16.and here in the West Mercia area over an 18 month period
:08:17. > :08:18.there were 850 assaults. But however well trained,
:08:19. > :08:23.not everyone trusts the police Officers have suffered
:08:24. > :08:32.a variety of injuries, teeth being knocked
:08:33. > :08:33.out, broken bones. It can be extremely traumatic
:08:34. > :08:36.and officers then have to live with the injuries they may have
:08:37. > :08:38.suffered during a shift. The hope is the number of those
:08:39. > :09:14.injuries can be reduced. A homeless hostel which was opened
:09:15. > :09:18.as a two month trial a year ago in Stoke is still taking in rough
:09:19. > :09:21.sleepers, thanks to a former New figures show the number
