:00:13. > :00:18.The arrests followed searches at three properties in Birmingham.

:00:19. > :00:21.Police have identified the attacker as 52-year-old Khalid Masood,

:00:22. > :00:23.they believe he'd been living here in the West Midlands.

:00:24. > :00:26.Elizabeth Glinka is outside the property in Hagley Road

:00:27. > :00:28.which has been the subject of a police search

:00:29. > :00:36.for most of the day. Elizabeth, what's the latest?

:00:37. > :00:42.tape has now gone. The police pulled tape has now gone. The police pulled

:00:43. > :00:48.out of this property a short time ago. Men on the ground floor flat

:00:49. > :00:52.were making their way back into the building. Police were here from late

:00:53. > :00:55.last night searching all day, this is one of three properties in

:00:56. > :00:57.Birmingham where raids took place and as a result, we now know seven

:00:58. > :01:03.people were arrested. Let me give you a rundown

:01:04. > :01:06.of what we know about the Birmingham arrests -

:01:07. > :01:08.a 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man

:01:09. > :01:11.were arrested at one address. A 26-year-old woman and three men

:01:12. > :01:13.aged 28, 27 and 26 years old were arrested at a separate

:01:14. > :01:16.address in Birmingham. And a 58-year-old man from another

:01:17. > :01:18.property is also being detained. All were arrested on suspicion

:01:19. > :01:21.of preparing for acts of terrorism. We're told the operation involves

:01:22. > :01:31.hundreds of officers We now know that we believe the name

:01:32. > :01:32.Khalid Masood is in fact a false name.

:01:33. > :01:36.My colleague Giles Latcham was was following events as they unfolded.

:01:37. > :01:39.In Winson Green, west of Birmingham city centre,

:01:40. > :01:42.police search a former home of Khalid Masood, the man

:01:43. > :01:45.they believe carried out yesterday's attack at Westminster.

:01:46. > :01:48.My partner talked to him just once but it was just, how are you?

:01:49. > :01:54.No other conversation. He was a very calm person.

:01:55. > :01:58.Barely a mile away, the shutters came down at the premises

:01:59. > :02:01.where the 4x4 car driven at speed across Westminster Bridge

:02:02. > :02:07.An armed police officer was standing right there.

:02:08. > :02:11.On the Hagley Road, this man, who didn't want to be identified,

:02:12. > :02:14.looked on last night as police officers carrying automatic weapons

:02:15. > :02:20.I didn't think it'd hit so close to home.

:02:21. > :02:23.I am really shocked and concerned all this has happened.

:02:24. > :02:30.So what do we know about Khalid Masood?

:02:31. > :02:33.Born in Kent, he'd lived most recently in the West Midlands.

:02:34. > :02:36.He had previous convictions for assault and possession

:02:37. > :02:41.But significantly no terrorism offences.

:02:42. > :02:44.Police are doing their job and if we let them do their job,

:02:45. > :02:47.they can do a better job to make us all feel safe.

:02:48. > :02:50.On the Hagley Road, a restaurant owner, who rented out

:02:51. > :02:53.the flat raided by police, read a statement,

:02:54. > :02:59.Like Londoners, it is business as usual for us in Birmingham.

:03:00. > :03:02.And I shall be opening my restaurant as usual.

:03:03. > :03:06.United we shall stand against such evil people carrying out

:03:07. > :03:12.From the authorities too, a call for unity.

:03:13. > :03:15.The people perpetrating these sort of things are a tiny minority.

:03:16. > :03:19.And what we mustn't do is allow that small minority who are trying

:03:20. > :03:23.to undermine our democracy, people trying to undermine

:03:24. > :03:26.the peaceful way of life that we have, we are not

:03:27. > :03:30.going to let them do it by forcing us apart.

:03:31. > :03:32.For others, today was a day of reflection, reflecting

:03:33. > :03:36.on the moment they saw terror up close.

:03:37. > :03:39.Jayne Wilkinson from Sutton Coldfield was sightseeing

:03:40. > :03:45.I saw a man running along with a very large knife,

:03:46. > :03:49.not your standard flick knife that you pop in your pocket,

:03:50. > :03:51.this was a big, almost kitchen-sized knife,

:03:52. > :03:54.running towards the police officers behind the barriers.

:03:55. > :03:59.That is when we heard the three shots as he disappeared.

:04:00. > :04:02.This fast-moving inquiry is being led by the Metropolitan Police.

:04:03. > :04:05.The attack was on our capital but an attack it now seems likely

:04:06. > :04:11.that was conceived and planned in the second city.

:04:12. > :04:21.People woke up to the news that police raids had taken

:04:22. > :04:27.Our Special correspondent, Peter Wilson has been assessing

:04:28. > :04:30.the reaction of communities and watched as the police

:04:31. > :04:32.mounted high visibility patrols on our streets.

:04:33. > :04:35.Birmingham's Council House, the city's flag at half-mast.

:04:36. > :04:38.New Street Station, extra police officers to greet those

:04:39. > :04:43.In the shadow of the Rotunda, officers in 4x4 vehicles, others

:04:44. > :04:52.There is a lot of police around from earlier this morning.

:04:53. > :04:55.The police just want to reassure the public they are in good hands

:04:56. > :05:00.People do need reassurance and that is a good thing.

:05:01. > :05:02.I feel quite protected and safe in the knowledge we have really good

:05:03. > :05:07.We feel safe, this is our home, our country and we will stay together.

:05:08. > :05:09.In Parliament today, one of the city's MPs

:05:10. > :05:16.This attacker and people like him are not of my religion,

:05:17. > :05:22.And we should condemn all of them who pretend to be

:05:23. > :05:25.of a particular religion because they are not of religion.

:05:26. > :05:27.If they were of a religion, they would not be carrying

:05:28. > :05:30.out acts like this. We have to stay united and show them

:05:31. > :05:33.they cannot win on these grounds, and we are here to stay.

:05:34. > :05:36.This morning, people gathered together again

:05:37. > :05:39.at the Holy Trinity Church, Birchfield.

:05:40. > :05:42.There was comfort in a cup of tea and shared talk.

:05:43. > :05:45.Birmingham is a city where communities, religions,

:05:46. > :05:51.Birmingham, I hope we will be as strong as we always have been,

:05:52. > :05:54.to stand tall, to support each other, to support our neighbours,

:05:55. > :06:02.Early this morning, I was invited to a mosque in Balsall Heath.

:06:03. > :06:05.Some of the earliest Muslim immigrants to Birmingham

:06:06. > :06:12.What happened in London has been called an Islamist terrorist attack.

:06:13. > :06:15.No one will accept this kind of action whether it is

:06:16. > :06:22.Absolutely we are against any type of heinous act like this.

:06:23. > :06:26.What can the Muslim community do to help the security services?

:06:27. > :06:29.Any criminal act where we have information to help

:06:30. > :06:33.an investigation, you should support the security services and provide

:06:34. > :06:39.The message from the Prime Minister Theresa May was a simple one today.

:06:40. > :06:46.That message has been echoed on the streets of Birmingham.

:06:47. > :06:49.The people who live here have also given a simple piece of advice,

:06:50. > :06:55.the only way the terrorists can win is if we, the people, are divided.

:06:56. > :06:58.The extra patrols and security were not the result of any immediate

:06:59. > :07:10.The police repeat that their operation is one of reassurance.

:07:11. > :07:16.The NHS Trust which runs the Royal Stoke and County

:07:17. > :07:19.hospitals has been placed into special financial measures.

:07:20. > :07:24.The University Hospitals of North Midlands is one of ten

:07:25. > :07:27.Trusts across England, listed as failing to meet

:07:28. > :07:33.It will receive expert checks on issues such as rota planning -

:07:34. > :07:35.to reduce their dependence on high-cost agency staff.

:07:36. > :07:38.The Trust says it welcomes the extra support.

:07:39. > :07:41.The children's charity, the NSPCC, says the number of child

:07:42. > :07:44.sex offences recorded in the West Midlands has doubled

:07:45. > :07:50.Between 2014 and 2015 there were 1,265 cases.

:07:51. > :07:53.Last year that number rose to more than 2,500.

:07:54. > :07:56.A national charity is warning the level of personal debt

:07:57. > :07:59.in the West Midlands is getting worse.

:08:00. > :08:01.Christians Against Poverty are currently supporting 487

:08:02. > :08:16.That's an average of almost ?10,000 each.

:08:17. > :08:19.Our reporter Amy Cole has been to meet a family in Birmingham

:08:20. > :08:25.You want beans instead of vegetables?

:08:26. > :08:28.For the past year, the Baylis family has been slowly

:08:29. > :08:30.peeling away their debt. With a budget in place,

:08:31. > :08:32.Kelly's now spending ?60 to ?70 on the weekly shop.

:08:33. > :08:35.Is that enough? Yes.

:08:36. > :08:37.Once you know what you are cooking, the ingredients,

:08:38. > :08:41.and batch cooking helps. How much did you used to spend?

:08:42. > :08:46.Next door, their debt coach Owen O'Brien is looking

:08:47. > :08:49.through the budget plan with her husband Karl to see

:08:50. > :08:54.The family got into difficulties when Karl lost his job and racked up

:08:55. > :08:59.With two children to support, they turned

:09:00. > :09:02.to Christians Against Poverty. The charity is unique

:09:03. > :09:05.in that it sends debt advisers to people's homes.

:09:06. > :09:08.And it helps clients by dealing directly with their creditors.

:09:09. > :09:11.It is going to be difficult to actually work out

:09:12. > :09:17.And that is often where people feel they can't do it or face it.

:09:18. > :09:20.We come in and we stand in the gap for them,

:09:21. > :09:23.we speak to the creditors for them, so all they have to do

:09:24. > :09:25.is speak to us and we take that pressure off them.

:09:26. > :09:28.It is very easy to stick to if you are prepared

:09:29. > :09:30.to tighten your belt. I am not stressing about money

:09:31. > :09:33.any more because I know what my budget is.

:09:34. > :09:36.The family will continue to receive help until they become debt-free.

:10:17. > :10:19.so a chilly start but high pressure driving our weather as we head

:10:20. > :10:22.towards the end of the week, keeping things nice and settled.

:10:23. > :10:26.So for tomorrow, it will be a chilly start and we will eventually start

:10:27. > :10:28.to see the sun burning through that cloud.

:10:29. > :10:31.And it will be a dry and bright afternoon.

:10:32. > :10:34.Lots of lovely sunshine to come. The winds will be a touch lighter

:10:35. > :10:36.as well, so temperatures getting up to 11 or 12 Celsius.

:10:37. > :10:39.They could do a touch better than that.

:10:40. > :10:42.As we head through the weekend, we're going to keep that

:10:43. > :10:45.high pressure as well, staying lovely and settled

:10:46. > :10:48.into Saturday and into Mothering Sunday as well.

:10:49. > :10:50.Lots more sunshine on the way and temperatures steadily getting
