:00:18. > :00:19.supporter at the weekend, has been shared thousands of times.

:00:20. > :00:22.Saffiyah says she stepped in to protect a woman who had been

:00:23. > :00:24.surrounded by members of the far right movement, during

:00:25. > :00:26.their demonstration in Birmingham on Saturday.

:00:27. > :00:29.The EDL claims that she disrupted a minute's silence for terror attack

:00:30. > :00:31.victims during the rally, which she denies.

:00:32. > :00:38.An image that's travelled around the world - today,

:00:39. > :00:41.at home in Acocks Green, Saffiyah Khan was reflecting on her

:00:42. > :00:47.moment of defiance at Saturday's EDL demonstration in Birmingham.

:00:48. > :00:49.She says she stepped in to help a Muslim woman

:00:50. > :00:55.She seemed scared, but regardless of whether or not she felt scared,

:00:56. > :00:58.the fact of the matter is there was a group

:00:59. > :01:02.of EDL surrounding her, and I don't think anybody should be

:01:03. > :01:07.The photograph shows Saffiyah appearing to smile at EDL

:01:08. > :01:12.She says he was poking his finger in her face,

:01:13. > :01:18.I was just looking at the guy, and sometimes just the best

:01:19. > :01:21.Were you actually scared when you intervened?

:01:22. > :01:29.I wasn't then, and I'm not now, and I don't intend to be.

:01:30. > :01:32.Ian Crossland hasn't yet commented today,

:01:33. > :01:36.but he did speak on Saturday before the photograph was taken.

:01:37. > :01:38.It's not a demonstration against Muslims, it's

:01:39. > :01:41.a demonstration against radical Mu...Islam.

:01:42. > :01:43.Around 100 people took part in the rally.

:01:44. > :01:46.The EDL says it moved the protest from Derby to Birmingham

:01:47. > :01:50.because Khalid Masood, the Westminster attacker,

:01:51. > :01:56.On a site claiming to be the EDL's official Facebook page,

:01:57. > :01:59.it said Saffiyah had been "disrespectful, shouting

:02:00. > :02:03.during a minute's silence for victims of terror attacks

:02:04. > :02:09.Saffiyah says there was no "one-minute silence".

:02:10. > :02:11.That's a really hurtful claim, because anyone that knows me,

:02:12. > :02:17.even not particularly well, or has just talk to me once

:02:18. > :02:20.or twice, can vouch for the fact that I would respect a minute's

:02:21. > :02:32.Saffiyah also denies claims she's a member of any anti-fascist group.

:02:33. > :02:35.People we spoke to seemed happy the photograph had been circulated

:02:36. > :02:41.I think it's a brave act, especially because they are quite,

:02:42. > :02:43.you know, they are a lot more aggressive and physically taller

:02:44. > :02:49.When she stayed calm, I think it brought more

:02:50. > :02:51.awareness to it rather than causing an argument.

:02:52. > :02:53.Saffiyah says she finds it strange the picture has

:02:54. > :02:56.attracted such notoriety, but hopes it'll motivate

:02:57. > :03:05.A mum, drunk on vodka, who lost control of her car

:03:06. > :03:09.in a high-speed crash as her toddler son sat in the back seat,

:03:10. > :03:15.32-year-old Tania Chikwature, from Coventry, was more than three

:03:16. > :03:17.times over the drink-drive limit, when she lost control

:03:18. > :03:20.of her Nissan Qashqai near Peterborough in December.

:03:21. > :03:23.Our reporter Ben Sidwell has the details.

:03:24. > :03:29.The images are really quite shocking.

:03:30. > :03:32.The accident happened on December the 12th,

:03:33. > :03:36.Tania Chikwature hit a roundabout while overtaking a lorry

:03:37. > :03:41.Take a look at these pictures taken from the dash

:03:42. > :03:52.The impact catapulted the car 14 feet into the air,

:03:53. > :03:57.it hit a tree and then landed on its roof on the other side.

:03:58. > :04:00.In the back seat of her car was her 20 month old son.

:04:01. > :04:04.Incredibly, he wasn't hurt and was found by passing motorists

:04:05. > :04:08.still in his car seat hanging upside down.

:04:09. > :04:19.What was the court told today? and was cut free by fire-fighters.

:04:20. > :04:21.Today Magistrates heard that she'd been up drinking vodka

:04:22. > :04:24.the night before the crash, and a vodka bottle was found

:04:25. > :04:29.She refused to do a breath test at the scene, but was later

:04:30. > :04:32.Officers then worked out that at the time of the incident

:04:33. > :04:35.she was more than three times over the drink-drive limit.

:04:36. > :04:38.The police officer in charge of the case said Chikwature had

:04:39. > :04:40.showed complete disregard for the safety and welfare

:04:41. > :04:46.He said it was pure luck that nobody was killed.

:04:47. > :04:49.Chikwature admitted dangerous driving and was jailed for 26 weeks.

:04:50. > :04:53.She also admitted drinking and driving, and was sentenced to 12

:04:54. > :04:56.She was banned from driving for three years.

:04:57. > :04:58.A 26-year-old man's appeared in court charged with murdering

:05:03. > :05:03.Anthony Banting died after being stabbed a number

:05:04. > :05:06.of times in Winson Green on March the 31st.

:05:07. > :05:09.Alaeldein Ahmed appeared before magistrates in

:05:10. > :05:12.He was remanded in custody and is due to appear

:05:13. > :05:15.at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

:05:16. > :05:18.A controversial plan to award a ?690 million contract,

:05:19. > :05:22.covering cancer care in Staffordshire, has been scrapped.

:05:23. > :05:24.The proposals involved University Hospital North Midlands

:05:25. > :05:27.and Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals, but it would have meant a contractor

:05:28. > :05:32.taking on ten per cent more work, with no extra money.

:05:33. > :05:34.Health bosses have decided it was too financially

:05:35. > :05:48.In simple terms, they couldn't demonstrate they were able to manage

:05:49. > :05:51.the risk of the contract. We wanted them to increase the number of

:05:52. > :05:56.people who were diagnosed with cancer and, actually, ensure they

:05:57. > :05:57.were treated but within the same money available previously.

:05:58. > :05:59.A woman from Stourbridge who was seriously injured

:06:00. > :06:02.when she rescued a child off the coast of Devon, has been

:06:03. > :06:05.speaking about her determination to be able to live in her own home.

:06:06. > :06:07.Deb Drew has been in a rehabilitation centre

:06:08. > :06:10.since suffering severe injuries following the rescue in 2014.

:06:11. > :06:12.Now friends and family are fundraising, so she can

:06:13. > :06:22.Kisses for a dear friend whom they rarely get to see these days.

:06:23. > :06:27.A chance for Deb Drew to get out of her rehabilitation centre

:06:28. > :06:30.where she now spends all of her time.

:06:31. > :06:33.Back in 2014 she was holidaying in Woolacombe off

:06:34. > :06:37.Deb saw a young boy get into difficulties in the sea

:06:38. > :06:42.Both had to be rescued by the coastguard, but Deb suffered

:06:43. > :06:54.I can't move, so I can't wash myself or...

:06:55. > :07:01.I can now clean my teeth and feed myself breakfast now, so, obviously,

:07:02. > :07:11.She's a mother of two boys, who are now in their teens,

:07:12. > :07:14.and her dream is to spend this Christmas at home with them -

:07:15. > :07:16.she's not been back there since the accident.

:07:17. > :07:19.But she needs a very expensive wheelchair that

:07:20. > :07:22.can help her stand up, so friends from her old tennis club

:07:23. > :07:25.are cycling, pumping iron and getting fit fast

:07:26. > :07:30.for a three-day fundraising challenge.

:07:31. > :07:33.We are going to run up and down Snowdon in

:07:34. > :07:36.a fell race style challenge, and then we are going to swim

:07:37. > :07:38.on Lake Bala, which I understand in May is pretty cold,

:07:39. > :07:41.so we are all quite excited about that, and then

:07:42. > :07:45.we are going to do a 60-mile bike dash, a relay bike dash

:07:46. > :07:48.from the centre of Wales, mid-Wales, to our finish point,

:07:49. > :07:57.They need to raise ?25,000, and Deb couldn't be more grateful.

:07:58. > :08:07.Her mother Beryl is also a constant support.

:08:08. > :08:11.She says enabling her daughter to go home would be a huge relief.

:08:12. > :08:16.Her mind is healing quicker than her body is healing, which makes it...

:08:17. > :08:23.In one way it's good, but in another way it's not so good,

:08:24. > :08:30.because she's got time to think and wonder what's going to happen.

:08:31. > :08:34.Deb knows the boy survived but has never heard from his family.

:08:35. > :08:37.Her friends say she is truly selfless.

:08:38. > :08:44.Now when was the last time you wrote or received a handwritten letter?

:08:45. > :08:47.That's one of the ideas behind a new exhibition in Birmingham.

:08:48. > :08:49.It's been organised by Jodi Anne Bickley.

:08:50. > :08:50.After suffering serious illness and depression,

:08:51. > :08:54.she started the project One Million Lovely Letters in 2013,

:08:55. > :09:01.She's sent 4,000 and has a waiting list of 8,000.

:09:02. > :09:05.With so much demand, she's taken on ten letter writing volunteers.

:09:06. > :09:07.She hopes the exhibition will inspire others to start

:09:08. > :09:11.That's all from me, have a good night.

:09:12. > :09:17.Shefali has the forecast for the week ahead.

:09:18. > :09:24.Hallo and good evening. Yes I was going to be a hard act to follow,

:09:25. > :09:28.take a look at the contrast between the deep blue skies yesterday and

:09:29. > :09:34.the cloudy ones today. That has had a knock-on effect in temperatures,

:09:35. > :09:38.dropping them 8-10 . Yesterday was abnormally warm for the time of year

:09:39. > :09:42.and this week you'll find temperatures will be average for

:09:43. > :09:46.this time of year, perhaps high initially, then mid week onwards

:09:47. > :09:51.becoming a little bit lower as the breeze freshens up from the West.

:09:52. > :09:55.Generally speaking, just occasional showers sunshine. Tonight is settled

:09:56. > :10:00.with clear skies out there with a bit of patchy cloud here and there

:10:01. > :10:04.with temperatures dropping down to five in the south-west of the region

:10:05. > :10:07.and these figures are for the towns and cities and it is colder in the

:10:08. > :10:12.countryside. They chilly start tomorrow but plenty of sunshine on

:10:13. > :10:20.offer with some cloud bubbling up. It is a dry day temperatures rising

:10:21. > :10:25.to 15-16 with a moderate breeze. Tomorrow night, a frontal system

:10:26. > :10:29.pushes down from the north-west, pushing the cloud our way, keeping

:10:30. > :10:34.things drier for the entirety of tomorrow night with temperatures

:10:35. > :10:40.higher than tonight. We start the day on Wednesday 7-8. Some lighter

:10:41. > :10:45.outbreaks of rain to the south-east, just the odd heavier burst here and

:10:46. > :10:50.there with sunshine in between and temperatures 13-14. There is a

:10:51. > :10:54.breeze from the West, and as a result of this frontal system

:10:55. > :11:01.pushing out of the south-east, breezy conditions developing through

:11:02. > :11:05.the rest of the week. So, dryer on Thursday, a spot of rain on

:11:06. > :11:07.will have to keep an eye on the National forecast with Matt Taylor.
