:00:43. > :00:49.after a man was stabbed to death The victim, who was in his 30s,

:00:50. > :00:53.was attacked on the top deck of the bus in the Handsworth

:00:54. > :00:55.area last night. Roads in the area remain

:00:56. > :00:57.closed-off this lunchtime Our reporter Ben Sidwell

:00:58. > :01:12.is there for us now. Within the last half an hour, police

:01:13. > :01:16.have been carrying out searches here. They have been searching the

:01:17. > :01:21.road and the guttering in some of these shops. On the bus itself, the

:01:22. > :01:24.incident happened further down this road in Handsworth in Birmingham.

:01:25. > :01:28.Police say they were called at about quarter to 11 last night. When they

:01:29. > :01:34.arrived, they found a man slumped over one of the seats. Paramedics

:01:35. > :01:37.did their best to save the man, but sadly he was pronounced dead. Police

:01:38. > :01:42.say there were also a number of other people on the bus at the time

:01:43. > :01:46.and they are keen to tilt to them. -- keen to talk to them.

:01:47. > :01:48.We know that there were five people sat

:01:49. > :01:50.around with the two males on the

:01:51. > :01:53.top deck, so we've managed to speak to one of the people.

:01:54. > :01:56.The other four people left the bus shortly after

:01:57. > :01:59.Now, it might be that they didn't realise

:02:00. > :02:01.how serious the matter was and they just wanted

:02:02. > :02:03.to get out the way, which is perfectly understandable.

:02:04. > :02:05.However, what I would ask is they would come

:02:06. > :02:07.forward and speak to the

:02:08. > :02:16.It is a large area as you concede that has been cordoned off. A lot of

:02:17. > :02:19.locals have been coming out to look. I've spoken to a few of them and

:02:20. > :02:21.they all have the same feeling. They are all very concerned.

:02:22. > :02:23.Everybody in this road, they are worried about it.

:02:24. > :02:29.If you can't feel safe on the bus, where

:02:30. > :02:37.What happens if I'm on the bus with my children one day and then,

:02:38. > :02:48.Police say they think this was a completely chance altercation. They

:02:49. > :02:57.say the suspect they're looking for is a black man in his 20s with Greg

:02:58. > :03:01.Clark chair and a centre part ten. -- dreadlock hair. And a centre

:03:02. > :03:02.parting. A man's been jailed for 21 years

:03:03. > :03:05.for killing his former partner and trying to murder her lover

:03:06. > :03:07.in West Bromwich. 26-year-old mother of three

:03:08. > :03:12.Wendy Mann was strangled in her own home by 63-year-old

:03:13. > :03:15.Leroy Sterling in August 2015. A month earlier he stabbed

:03:16. > :03:17.Trevor Tyndale who was in A jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court

:03:18. > :03:21.found Sterling guilty of murder Vulnerable children

:03:22. > :03:28.in Worcestershire are at risk of "significant harm" according

:03:29. > :03:30.to a report into social services Services to help children leave care

:03:44. > :03:49.are leaving them in continued risk of is significant harm. -- failing

:03:50. > :03:53.of the council. It's claimed plans to run former

:03:54. > :03:55.London Underground trains on the Midlands rail network

:03:56. > :03:58.are still on course, despite a fire The Warwickshire company Vivarail

:03:59. > :04:01.is converting Tube trains to help It says the fire on a test train

:04:02. > :04:06.is still being investigated Our Transport Correspondent Peter

:04:07. > :04:09.Plisner has been given exclusive access to the firm's

:04:10. > :04:20.testing facilities. Here we are at Long Marston. The

:04:21. > :04:26.fire last month caused by a fire in the engine. This is the very fire.

:04:27. > :04:28.As you can see, it is business as usual. This is one of the London

:04:29. > :04:33.Underground trains currently being converted. This is the actual test

:04:34. > :04:38.trainer caught fire. A lot of work going on to it. It should be back on

:04:39. > :04:43.the tracks in the spring. Here with me is the Chief Executive. Tell me,

:04:44. > :04:45.the investigation, how is it going? The investigation is almost

:04:46. > :04:51.complete. We are going to publish a final report next week. We know why

:04:52. > :04:54.the fire happened, we have a series of actions that we are going to put

:04:55. > :04:59.in place to make sure it doesn't happen again. How disappointing and

:05:00. > :05:02.a setback was it for you? Clearly it is disappointing. But the train was

:05:03. > :05:06.a test trainer and the purpose of them is to find out what happens.

:05:07. > :05:11.Alexi ran extremely well apart from that one incident -- it actually ran

:05:12. > :05:17.extremely well. Other things we're very pleased about that the fire

:05:18. > :05:23.didn't damage the car body much at all. Minor repairs. We put special

:05:24. > :05:28.plates under the floor to protect passengers in that worked extremely

:05:29. > :05:31.well. How much difference will this make to the overcrowding we are

:05:32. > :05:37.seeing on the rail network? They have the potential to move a lot of

:05:38. > :05:43.people very quickly. Also, shorter station times. Really is what this

:05:44. > :05:46.whole train designed for. Thank you. There is a national shortage of

:05:47. > :05:48.diesel trains, so they could be coming to eight station near you

:05:49. > :05:52.pretty soon. -- a station. Now, a diving team is working deep

:05:53. > :05:55.under Birmingham this lunchtime to keep the city's

:05:56. > :05:57.canals workng smoothly. The divers will use an inflatable

:05:58. > :06:00.pillow to plug and then drain a stretch of pipeline which moves

:06:01. > :06:02.water around the canal network. Our Environment correspondent David

:06:03. > :06:09.Gregory-Kumar has been on site. Well, this is something you don't

:06:10. > :06:13.often see in landlocked Birmingham. This is actually, believe it or not,

:06:14. > :06:18.a diving operation and it is going to be taking place about 17, 19

:06:19. > :06:22.metres beneath that entrance hall. And to explain what it is all about,

:06:23. > :06:29.it is Neil Bedford. Neal, there is a culvert

:06:30. > :06:34.down there, a pipe. This pipe, it connects to the canal

:06:35. > :06:38.down at Saltley and it's And what allows us to do

:06:39. > :06:42.with the pumping station, we can pump water from

:06:43. > :06:50.down at the bottom. From there, we can

:06:51. > :06:53.feed the rest of the canal system down through

:06:54. > :06:55.Knole and further south. So, this diving operation

:06:56. > :06:57.is right at the We're going to be blocking it

:06:58. > :07:00.off because they want to drain it so you can check

:07:01. > :07:02.the pumps themselves. What the diver's going to do

:07:03. > :07:08.is insert an stopper. That is effectively

:07:09. > :07:10.an inflatable balloon in The diver is going to push

:07:11. > :07:14.this stopper under the We're then going to inflate

:07:15. > :07:18.it from the ground. Once we're happy, I can

:07:19. > :07:21.then start the pumps up. I can then dewater just that

:07:22. > :07:23.short section of the culvert, between the

:07:24. > :07:25.stopper and the pumps. So we're dewatering a short

:07:26. > :07:27.section and protecting the And that means you can

:07:28. > :07:31.check the pumps that have The pumps were installed

:07:32. > :07:35.27 years ago. They pumped nearly

:07:36. > :07:37.400 litres of water We're looking to actually

:07:38. > :07:42.replace them later this year, but we need to

:07:43. > :07:44.inspect the installation. As you can see, the

:07:45. > :07:48.operation is ongoing. We'll have an update

:07:49. > :07:51.in tonight's programme. Time for a look at the weather now

:07:52. > :07:54.with Charlie Slater. Not a bad afternoon

:07:55. > :07:59.in store for you either. A good deal of dry and fine weather

:08:00. > :08:03.around over the next few hours, just a little bit of cloud

:08:04. > :08:05.building into the picture. Particularly the further

:08:06. > :08:06.west you are. Basically, the further east

:08:07. > :08:08.is better this afternoon. You will find more blue

:08:09. > :08:10.sky and sunshine there. Temperatures will climb up to around

:08:11. > :08:13.six or seven Celsius. You might even get the odd

:08:14. > :08:16.eight Celsius at fair. That being said, there

:08:17. > :08:19.is still the occasional area where there is an isolated

:08:20. > :08:22.patch of fog which will last all day long today and that will of course

:08:23. > :08:25.limit the growth of temperatures. We will go through

:08:26. > :08:27.tonight and onto the early hours of Wednesday morning,

:08:28. > :08:29.the foggy patches unfortunately are going to return, particularly in

:08:30. > :08:32.further southern and eastern areas Temperatures not falling

:08:33. > :08:36.as far as last night. Last night was minus four minus five

:08:37. > :08:39.and a couple of spots. That being said, there

:08:40. > :08:43.are a couple of warnings that have been issued from the to

:08:44. > :08:46.Met Office, still cold enough for there to be a little

:08:47. > :08:49.bit of ice around. Again, we will have

:08:50. > :08:52.to look out for some fog first thing

:08:53. > :08:54.on Wednesday morning. Of course, ice and fog

:08:55. > :08:57.are not a good combination. Can affect visibility

:08:58. > :08:59.out there on the roads. Going through the daytime,

:09:00. > :09:01.on Wednesday a good deal of Occasionally, the cloud

:09:02. > :09:04.will thin and break. The fog patches could linger

:09:05. > :09:06.a little bit as well. Temperatures will do

:09:07. > :09:08.all right on Wednesday, getting up to around

:09:09. > :09:10.six or seven Celsius. But later, we'll be in Worcester

:09:11. > :09:14.as Paralympic gold medallist Claire Cashmore officially opens

:09:15. > :09:17.the city's new swimming pool. That's in Midlands Today with

:09:18. > :09:19.Mary Rhodes at 18:30 on BBC One. Until then, have a very

:09:20. > :09:22.good afternoon.
