:00:13. > :00:14.colliery claimed the lives of 57 miners.

:00:15. > :00:16.Those men and their families have been remembered

:00:17. > :00:19.at a special memorial to the New Year's Day

:00:20. > :00:31.At Holy Trinity Church in Burslem, the names of the lost

:00:32. > :00:43.57 men and boys were killed in the Sneyd pit.

:00:44. > :00:45.The youngest was just 15 years of age.

:00:46. > :00:48.The explosion happened at eight o'clock on the morning of January

:00:49. > :00:56.Almost all the miners there were killed immediately.

:00:57. > :01:08.He was the 39th miner they got out and he had

:01:09. > :01:10.an electric light on, which I suppose was

:01:11. > :01:12.a battery-operated light, but some of them hadn't

:01:13. > :01:17.What makes this such a tragedy is these men would never have

:01:18. > :01:19.normally worked on New Year's Day, but they'd been called

:01:20. > :01:23.in on this particular occasion to support the war effort.

:01:24. > :01:26.I did work and made friends with some of the survivors

:01:27. > :01:29.and the stories they gave me were just incredible.

:01:30. > :01:32.Those brave men that went in, the rescue teams that

:01:33. > :01:42.This afternoon, the hymns and prayers here were dedicated

:01:43. > :01:46.to the victims of the disaster and their families.

:01:47. > :01:49.People from my own congregation said they just whispered the name

:01:50. > :01:52.of somebody who was close to them because it was a very major

:01:53. > :01:56.industry in the Potteries for many, many decades.

:01:57. > :01:59.The Sneyd pit, a workhorse of the Staffordshire coalfields,

:02:00. > :02:06.But today, the scars and scale of human suffering in a small

:02:07. > :02:16.Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died following being hit

:02:17. > :02:18.by a car while out celebrating the New Year.

:02:19. > :02:21.The 43-year-old, who hasn't been named, was hit by a car

:02:22. > :02:23.on Wolverhampton Road in Sandwell just before eight

:02:24. > :02:26.A 46-year-old woman driver is assisting officers

:02:27. > :02:32.A 13-year-old schoolboy who died from his injuries

:02:33. > :02:34.after being knocked down in the Black Country last

:02:35. > :02:37.week has been described by his parents as an "amazing,

:02:38. > :02:41.Sean Williams, from Bushbury in Wolverhampton, was hit

:02:42. > :02:45.by a car in Wednesfield last Thursday afternoon.

:02:46. > :02:49.The driver of the car is helping police with their investigations.

:02:50. > :02:51.Coventry has been praised as an example of "Britain

:02:52. > :02:55.at its best" by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

:03:24. > :03:28.as a clergyman, a city whose wartime suffering and forgiveness, he says,

:03:29. > :03:35.The story of this city says so much that is true

:03:36. > :03:39.about Britain at its best, about our courage, our standing up

:03:40. > :03:42.to tyranny, how we stand alongside the suffering and defeated,

:03:43. > :03:46.how we stand for human dignity and hope.

:03:47. > :03:49.The Archbishop visited a drop-in centre for refugees,

:03:50. > :03:55.people he called "a blessing to our way of life".

:03:56. > :03:58.And he drew his message to a close by focusing on an issue that has

:03:59. > :04:02.divided so many parts of the country.

:04:03. > :04:06.The EU referendum was a tough campaign and it has left divisions.

:04:07. > :04:11.But I know that if we look at our roots, our history,

:04:12. > :04:13.our culture and our Christian tradition, if we reach back

:04:14. > :04:16.into what is best in this country, we will find a path

:04:17. > :04:21.towards reconciling the differences that have divided us.

:04:22. > :04:24.From Coventry to Canterbury, the Archbishop believes that looking

:04:25. > :04:32.back can only help us prepare for the future.
