:00:12. > :00:14.Coventry has been praised as an example of Britain

:00:15. > :00:19.at its best by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

:00:20. > :00:23.In his New Year message, recorded in Coventry,

:00:24. > :00:25.the Most Reverend Justin Welby said the city's response to its

:00:26. > :00:28.devastation in the Second World War set an example of reconciliation.

:00:29. > :00:31.Surrendering to the demands of television lighting,

:00:32. > :00:33.the Archbishop of Canterbury prepares to deliver his New Year's

:00:34. > :00:39.Justin Welby returned to Coventry, the city where he started out

:00:40. > :00:42.as a clergyman, a city whose wartime suffering and forgiveness, he says,

:00:43. > :00:51.The story of this city says so much that is true

:00:52. > :00:57.about Britain at its best, about our courage, our standing up

:00:58. > :00:59.to tyranny, how we stand alongside the suffering and defeated,

:01:00. > :01:02.how we stand for human dignity and hope.

:01:03. > :01:07.The Archbishop visited a drop-in centre for refugees,

:01:08. > :01:12.people he called "a blessing to our way of life".

:01:13. > :01:15.And he drew his message to a close by focusing on an issue that has

:01:16. > :01:19.divided so many parts of the country.

:01:20. > :01:22.The EU referendum was a tough campaign and it has left divisions.

:01:23. > :01:25.But I know that if we look at our roots, our history,

:01:26. > :01:27.and our culture in the Christian tradition, if we reach back

:01:28. > :01:30.into what is best in this country, we will find a path

:01:31. > :01:37.towards reconciling the differences that have divided us.

:01:38. > :01:40.From Coventry to Canterbury, the Archbishop believes that looking

:01:41. > :01:51.back can only help us prepare for the future.

:01:52. > :01:53.75 years ago today 57 miners were killed in the Sneyd Pit

:01:54. > :02:00.The men and their families have today been remembered at a special

:02:01. > :02:13.At Holy Trinity Church in Burslem, the names of the lost

:02:14. > :02:24.57 men and boys were killed in the Sneyd pit.

:02:25. > :02:26.The youngest was just 15 years of age.

:02:27. > :02:28.The explosion happened at eight o'clock

:02:29. > :02:33.on the morning of January 1st, 1942, in pit number four.

:02:34. > :02:36.Almost all the miners there were killed immediately.

:02:37. > :02:46.He was the 39th miner they got out and he had

:02:47. > :02:49.an electric light on, which I suppose was

:02:50. > :02:55.but some of them hadn't even got that.

:02:56. > :02:58.What makes this such a tragedy is these men would never have

:02:59. > :03:00.normally worked on New Year's Day, but they'd been called

:03:01. > :03:02.in on this particular occasion to support the war effort.

:03:03. > :03:05.I did work and made friends with some of the survivors,

:03:06. > :03:07.and the stories they gave me were just incredible.

:03:08. > :03:11.Those brave men that went in, the rescue teams that

:03:12. > :03:22.This afternoon, the hymns and prayers here were dedicated

:03:23. > :03:28.to the victims of the disaster and their families.

:03:29. > :03:31.People from my own congregation said they just whispered the name

:03:32. > :03:33.of somebody who was close to them because it was a very major

:03:34. > :03:37.industry in the Potteries for many, many decades.

:03:38. > :03:39.The Sneyd pit, a workhorse of the Staffordshire coalfields,

:03:40. > :03:46.But today, the scars and scale of human suffering in a small

:03:58. > :03:58.Gloucester went down 13-12 to Northampton,

:03:59. > :04:01.but there was a great win for Worcester, who beat

:04:02. > :04:09.Let's take a look at the weather now, with Alex Hamilton.

:04:10. > :04:14.Well, happy New Year to you, and the good news is we have got

:04:15. > :04:17.some bright weather on the way, thanks to this area of high pressure

:04:18. > :04:22.Now, the rain that we saw earlier on is clearing away to the south,

:04:23. > :04:27.But dropping very cool, particularly in rural spots,

:04:28. > :04:32.Then, as we head towards tomorrow morning, we are expecting

:04:33. > :04:41.Not quite wall-to-wall sunshine, but plenty of sunny

:04:42. > :04:44.spells throughout the day and amounts of variable cloud.

:04:45. > :04:46.Cold again, though - highs of only four Celsius.

:04:47. > :04:51.More bright weather on the way for the next couple of days.

:04:52. > :04:53.That's it for now. We're back tomorrow at 1:15pm.

:04:54. > :05:01.From the late team, good night and happy New Year.

:05:02. > :05:06.We will be back tomorrow. Happy New Year.

:05:07. > :05:16.For many, New Year's Day was a shocker with all of that rain

:05:17. > :05:20.around. Tomorrow will be sunny, but it is getting colder. This is rain

:05:21. > :05:24.clearing from the south-east. These specks of white as snow mixed in

:05:25. > :05:26.with showers across parts of northern England, particularly

:05:27. > :05:32.across Scotland, low levels here. I say that they hazard in northern and

:05:33. > :05:37.eastern areas. I would not rule out slippery areas almost anywhere by

:05:38. > :05:41.the morning, by which time temperatures will be close to or

:05:42. > :05:45.below freezing in many places. A bright and sunny start, but still

:05:46. > :05:49.wintry showers, sliding down the North Sea coast. Some snow down at

:05:50. > :05:53.quite low levels to the north of Scotland. Here, the snow will turn

:05:54. > :05:57.to rain. Something milder creeping in off the Atlantic as it clouds

:05:58. > :06:03.over. Further south, despite that sunshine, it will feel cold. 3-5 is

:06:04. > :06:04.the best I can offer you, briefly, through the afternoon. Then

:06:05. > :06:06.temperatures fall away like a
