:00:07. > :00:09.Two elderly residents of a care home in Staffordshire are in a serious

:00:10. > :00:12.condition in hospital after a fire severely damaged the property.

:00:13. > :00:14.They were amongst 25 residents who had to be evacuated.

:00:15. > :00:22.The alarm was raised at around 11.30 last night at the Standon House

:00:23. > :00:32.It took 20 firefighters around three hours to bring it under control.

:00:33. > :00:34.Staffordshire Fire Service say it was caused by a discarded

:00:35. > :00:37.cigarette in an external smoking area which lead to the fire

:00:38. > :00:41.spreading to the roof of the home. Seven of the residents had to be

:00:42. > :00:45.One to the Queens Hospital in Burton upon Trent

:00:46. > :00:54.In two of them here are said to be in a serious condition.

:00:55. > :00:57.The remaining residents had to be rehoused in nearby flats, and two

:00:58. > :01:01.Many of the residents' bedrooms were unfortunately quite seriously

:01:02. > :01:04.The majority of the fire was in the roof space and then

:01:05. > :01:08.we had quite a lot of smoke damage and obviously where we put water

:01:09. > :01:13.on to the fire, that water ingresses into the residents' rooms as well.

:01:14. > :01:16.That is why there was the need to re-home some of the residents.

:01:17. > :01:24.Keith Hall's 91-year-old mother who has dementia,

:01:25. > :01:27.She was absolutely fine about it, really.

:01:28. > :01:29.Just totally unbelievable what has happened.

:01:30. > :01:34.Police have thanked local residents for raising the alarm and helping

:01:35. > :01:44.A 36-year-old man is in a stable condition in hospital after being

:01:45. > :01:49.stabbed in Burton-upon-Trent in the early hours of this morning.
