:00:02. > :00:12.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Gordon Burns and
:00:12. > :00:15.Ranvir Singh. Our top story: Still on the site? Police investigating
:00:15. > :00:24.three deaths at Stepping Hill hospital say the saboteur may still
:00:24. > :00:34.be there. This is a bad person doing a malevolent thing. This is a
:00:34. > :00:34.
:00:34. > :00:38.deliberate attempt to do injury and harm. As a fourth patient fights
:00:38. > :00:42.for life, police warn there will be no arrests soon. Also, the big
:00:42. > :00:46.clean-up. As homeowners survey the damage from yesterday's flood, an
:00:46. > :00:52.MP questions the supplier's competence. Where at the brand-new
:00:52. > :01:02.Museum of Liverpool, the history of one city in 6,000 objects. And we
:01:02. > :01:07.
:01:07. > :01:13.are in Manchester as Batman swoops And it's the big reveal of our
:01:13. > :01:18.garden at the flower show - Kate Simms is at Tatton Park. I can tell
:01:18. > :01:23.you that, despite the weather, the north-west tonight garden is
:01:23. > :01:31.looking great. But that is all you are seen for now. A proper look
:01:31. > :01:33.round later in the programme. Police say the person who
:01:33. > :01:37.contaminated saline at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport may
:01:37. > :01:42.still be on the site. This morning, inquests into the deaths of three
:01:42. > :01:47.patients were opened and adjourned. And, as we revealed last night, one
:01:47. > :01:51.patient in his early 40s is critically ill. Detectives also say
:01:51. > :01:54.they will at some stage look back into other deaths, but for the
:01:54. > :01:57.moment are concentrating on the current investigation. Arrests soon
:01:57. > :02:01.are unlikely. Our health correspondent Laura Yates reports.
:02:01. > :02:05.A week on and still police don't know who tried to hurt patients in
:02:05. > :02:07.this hospital. Patients there to be looked after, who are now at the
:02:07. > :02:10.centre of a major police investigation. Chillingly,
:02:10. > :02:14.detectives say the perpetrator may still be on the hospital site. And
:02:14. > :02:24.that this is going to be a long investigation. We have 60
:02:24. > :02:28.
:02:28. > :02:33.detectives working round the clock. We are doing that because we want
:02:33. > :02:37.to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible, and we are
:02:37. > :02:42.balancing the need to gather detailed evidence that will
:02:42. > :02:46.hopefully lead to the prosecution of this individual. The hospital is
:02:46. > :02:49.now in virtual lockdown. No-one is allowed in unless they are patients,
:02:49. > :02:53.staff or visitors. And while police know they have to allow the
:02:53. > :02:57.hospital to continue its work, they know they must catch whoever it is
:02:57. > :03:03.who has done this. This is a bad person doing a malevolent thing. A
:03:03. > :03:10.deliberate attempt to do injury and pain. That is a different league,
:03:10. > :03:18.that is about someone wanting to inflict, harm, pain and possibly
:03:18. > :03:21.further. What we know is that someone in the hospital tampered
:03:21. > :03:25.with saline. It's a mixture of salt and water used to hydrate patients.
:03:25. > :03:28.That was kept in an unlocked storeroom. He or she injected 36
:03:28. > :03:31.small containers with insulin. Some were given to patients on at least
:03:31. > :03:35.two wards. Police are investigating three suspicious deaths. A fourth
:03:35. > :03:39.person is in intensive care. 10 others are recovering. Meanwhile,
:03:39. > :03:45.the inquests of those patients at the centre of this case opened this
:03:45. > :03:48.morning - again amidst tight security. In a hearing that lasted
:03:48. > :03:58.less than ten minutes, coroner John Pollard opened and adjourned the
:03:58. > :04:04.
:04:04. > :04:07.inquests into the deaths will resume. The Laura, we've learnt
:04:08. > :04:10.more today about how the hospital has stepped up security. We've been
:04:10. > :04:14.given more details specifically about measures around medicines. We
:04:14. > :04:17.know that two members of staff must now always be present when drugs
:04:17. > :04:22.are signed out and administered. And we know they've changed the
:04:22. > :04:25.locks in controlled drug areas. What's also worth reiterating is
:04:25. > :04:35.that as soon as this the hospital discovered what had been happening,
:04:35. > :04:36.
:04:36. > :04:39.they replaced all the saline. next in the investigation? Key to
:04:39. > :04:42.this is going to be the results of the postmortem examinations.
:04:42. > :04:48.Without them, police won't know if the contaminated saline contributed
:04:48. > :04:50.to or caused the three deaths. They are investigating. As far as we
:04:50. > :04:54.understand that investigation currently dates back to the 7th
:04:54. > :04:58.July - the date Tracey Arden died - but today police said that while
:04:58. > :05:01.that is their priority right now at some stage they will look further
:05:01. > :05:04.back. A Merseyside MP has questioned whether the water
:05:04. > :05:08.company United Utilities is up to the job after a burst pipe caused
:05:08. > :05:11.widespread chaos in Huyton; it's the fourth major leak in the area
:05:11. > :05:14.in as many years. Yesterday's burst sent water gushing into nearby
:05:14. > :05:17.homes and some people had to be rescued by dinghy because roads
:05:17. > :05:27.were submerged. Today, homeowners were busy clearing up, as Stuart
:05:27. > :05:28.
:05:28. > :05:31.Flinders reports. Mopping up, removing the sandbags, jet washing
:05:32. > :05:35.the path - the clean up was in full force this morning. Where yesterday
:05:35. > :05:38.there was a river, today life was returning to normal and
:05:38. > :05:41.householders were counting the cost. Here, boards ripped up in the
:05:41. > :05:46.hallway turned up in the living room. The cause - an eruption of
:05:46. > :05:54.water that blasted into the sky for more than six hours. It blew, like
:05:54. > :05:58.a volcano. This has come out of the tarmac on the road? It was just
:05:58. > :06:03.constantly hitting the front of the house. I could not get my car out.
:06:03. > :06:07.I was watching bricks bouncing off it. The epicentre: this mains water
:06:07. > :06:11.pipe. The investigation into why it burst is still going on. It could
:06:11. > :06:15.take a week for repairs to be complete. The company responsible,
:06:16. > :06:19.United Utilities, is on the offensive. This is the fourth Major
:06:19. > :06:24.burst in this area in as many years, and the local MP is asking if the
:06:24. > :06:29.company is up to the job. It is increasingly apparent that United
:06:29. > :06:36.Utilities have not got a clue what to do about it. There must be an
:06:36. > :06:39.underlying problem that they have not found. Bursts to happen, we
:06:40. > :06:45.have investigated seven million in this network in the last few years
:06:45. > :06:48.and master condition would be to avoid any further boasts a cunning
:06:48. > :06:57.so we need to do it will investigation to make sure this
:06:57. > :07:00.never happens again. -- bursts occurring. Residents will be
:07:00. > :07:02.entitled to compensation. In the meantime, United Utilities was
:07:02. > :07:05.promising some goodwill payments as early as this afternoon. Two
:07:05. > :07:09.prisoners who escaped from a security van during yesterday's
:07:09. > :07:12.morning rush hour in Manchester are still on the run. The van was
:07:12. > :07:18.ambushed by armed men on a busy commuter route. Police say the pair
:07:18. > :07:21.- Kirk Bradley and Anthony Downes - should not be approached. A man
:07:21. > :07:24.suffering from a killer strain of tubercolosis has handed himself in
:07:24. > :07:27.at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Gary Clayden from Fleetwood had
:07:27. > :07:31.stopped getting medical treatment. A court order was issued because
:07:31. > :07:34.health officials said he posed a danger to the public. The strain
:07:34. > :07:43.had already killed one of his friends, and 12 other people in the
:07:43. > :07:46.area are infected. Manchester United has said Bryan Robson will
:07:46. > :07:49.remain a club ambassador until they have watched this documentary in
:07:49. > :07:51.which he was secretly filmed offering to help foreign
:07:51. > :07:55.businessmen break FA rules on club ownership. The former United
:07:55. > :08:01.captain is on tour with the club in America. United says it won't take
:08:01. > :08:04.any action until watching the Channel 4 programme. The re-opening
:08:04. > :08:06.of Liverpool's Festival Gardens has been postponed after the contractor
:08:06. > :08:09.went into administration. The company, Mayfield Construction, was
:08:09. > :08:13.close to completing the multi- million pound restoration of the
:08:13. > :08:23.waterfront site. It's hoped a new contractor will be able to finish
:08:23. > :08:23.
:08:23. > :08:27.the work so the gardens can open in September. There are calls for
:08:27. > :08:30.parents to be automatically balloted on any proposal to turn a
:08:30. > :08:33.school into an academy. More than 100 schools in the North West are
:08:33. > :08:36.going down that route, encouraged by government policy. But such
:08:36. > :08:39.moves are usually controversial. Tomorrow some teachers will strike
:08:39. > :08:42.at Hazel Grove High School in Stockport. And today in Liverpool,
:08:42. > :08:50.there was action over plans to partner a school with Chester
:08:50. > :09:00.University. Here's our political editor, Arif Ansari. I do want to
:09:00. > :09:03.get an education... If this had been a first date, it couldn't have
:09:03. > :09:06.gone worse. Staff and campaigners from Shorefields school in
:09:06. > :09:10.Liverpool came to tell Chester University they didn't want them.
:09:10. > :09:14.No partnership, no academy, but thanks for asking. The results in
:09:14. > :09:19.the school have been on the up - why change it when things have been
:09:19. > :09:23.on the up? Because it could be better? But we could make it better.
:09:23. > :09:29.I don't think that the University of Chester under stands this
:09:29. > :09:34.community, understands how we include everybody from that
:09:34. > :09:38.community in this school. But one MP, a former teacher himself, wants
:09:38. > :09:43.parents to be given an automatic say. I am strongly in favour of
:09:43. > :09:48.that. This is a public asset. The governors are who they have to be
:09:48. > :09:53.at this point in time. And at the very least parents should be asked,
:09:53. > :09:56.if not the wider community. nearby Ellesmere Port is one new
:09:56. > :10:04.academy where I'm told GCSE results have improved. It's outside council
:10:04. > :10:06.control, with greater say on how it's run. 36 schools are moving in
:10:06. > :10:10.the same direction across Greater Manchester, 22 in Cumbria, there
:10:10. > :10:19.are 18 in Lancashire, 16 across Merseyside and a dozen in Cheshire.
:10:19. > :10:24.104 in total. This is one school that has already become an academy,
:10:24. > :10:28.as it happens, in partnership with Chester University. With it
:10:28. > :10:38.happened willingly or not there is no doubt that the school system is
:10:38. > :10:41.
:10:41. > :10:44.being transformed across this region. It's a big week for the
:10:44. > :10:47.Liverpool Waterfront celebrating the old and the new! The world
:10:47. > :10:51.famous Liver Building is 100 years old today. And the city's brand new
:10:51. > :10:54.museum has also officially opened. The new attraction is the biggest
:10:54. > :10:58.national museum to be built in Britain in more than a century. Big
:10:58. > :11:01.enough, in fact, to display for the first time many objects which have
:11:01. > :11:06.been in storage. Our Merseyside Reporter, Andy Gill, is down at the
:11:06. > :11:10.Pier Head now. Yes, the library building opened 100 years ago,
:11:10. > :11:17.people thought it was a horrible concrete thing. Now the waterfront
:11:17. > :11:21.is unimaginable without it. The focus has been on the 70 million
:11:21. > :11:31.Museum of Liverpool. In a moment will Tour to the director, but
:11:31. > :11:34.
:11:34. > :11:38.first, here is so the opening day unfolded. If you build it, they
:11:38. > :11:40.will come. And the museum people are hoping for 750,000 visitors a
:11:40. > :11:44.year to Liverpool's newest attraction. They already have one
:11:44. > :11:54.big fan. A six year-old who wrote and asked if he could open it. The
:11:54. > :11:57.museum said yes. Three, two, one! Fantastic, absolutely the best.
:11:57. > :12:01.here are visitors from Bishop Martin School in Liverpool. They
:12:01. > :12:09.agreed to review the museum for us when they had looked round. I think
:12:09. > :12:13.it is really good, so far. There is so much hands on the interaction
:12:13. > :12:18.for children, it is very engaging. The design's raised some eyebrows.
:12:18. > :12:24.An ultra modern building next to the Three Graces. I think this
:12:24. > :12:28.building is great, those other buildings are Grade two. We wanted
:12:29. > :12:37.to make reference to the ships, so, from the Rover, it looks like a
:12:37. > :12:39.ship. -- the river. Although it's all about Liverpool, it's a
:12:40. > :12:46.national museum. And they hope it'll attract visitors from outside
:12:46. > :12:51.the city. We existed before football, before the Beatles, and
:12:51. > :12:59.visitors to this museum will get an Liverpool experience. It worked in
:12:59. > :13:04.one case. It is interesting, especially coming from Manchester.
:13:04. > :13:07.The second phase of the museum's due to open this winter. I am
:13:07. > :13:13.joined by the director of the museum. Tell me about the visitor
:13:13. > :13:17.numbers. We have had 12,000 visitors, the best the ever for any
:13:17. > :13:22.museum in the city. Are you have lots of museums - why do we need
:13:22. > :13:27.this one? It concentrates on Liverpool's past and present and we
:13:27. > :13:31.hope that it will contribute to the future. We felt that Labour will
:13:31. > :13:37.has a massive story to tell and it needed its own place to do it.
:13:37. > :13:43.you think does not compete with the Three Graces? I think that it fits
:13:43. > :13:47.in fabulously. It is fantastic in this location on the water and,
:13:47. > :13:52.between the Pier Head and the Albert Dock. We have fantastic
:13:52. > :13:58.windows that provide a lens on the city, the River Mersey and the IDC.
:13:58. > :14:02.It faces outwards, which is how Liverpool sees itself. It is a
:14:02. > :14:05.beautiful building when you get close to it. Because see the River
:14:06. > :14:10.Mersey reflected in the windows, and its colour will change with
:14:11. > :14:15.light throughout the day, so that when people get close to it, I hope
:14:15. > :14:19.they will glow -- will grow to love it. Later this week there are
:14:19. > :14:28.celebrations going on to mark the One hundredth anniversary of the
:14:28. > :14:35.live a building -- Liver Building. There is a big light show happening
:14:35. > :14:38.later this week. On Friday, we will have a special show looking at the
:14:38. > :14:48.construction of the building, and what it means for the city of
:14:48. > :14:50.
:14:50. > :14:56.Liverpool. That is north-west tonight, on Friday. Sounds great.
:14:56. > :15:00.Still to come in North West Tonight. At Tatton Park, they have been
:15:00. > :15:07.putting the finishing touches to our garden, or on the eve of the
:15:07. > :15:11.big show. And holy cow! We catch up with the caped crusader, ahead of
:15:11. > :15:17.the world premiere tonight in Manchester of bat man Alive.
:15:17. > :15:27.will be shaking in your chair, as the music starts and the bats swarm
:15:27. > :15:28.
:15:28. > :15:32.in. We've all got our phobias. Spiders, snakes and definitely
:15:32. > :15:35.heights for me. But have you ever heard of a child being afraid of
:15:35. > :15:38.the swings at the local park? When five year old Poppy Worthington
:15:38. > :15:41.from Macclesfield was anywhere near a playground, she would start
:15:41. > :15:45.screaming. Her mother was confused, and worried. It turned out Poppy
:15:45. > :15:50.was suffering from a brain tumour which caused her agony every time
:15:50. > :16:00.she was on the swings. Poppy, her mum Rachel and sister Emily are
:16:00. > :16:03.
:16:03. > :16:10.here. She is your biggest fan. I can tell you! She likes Gordon! She
:16:10. > :16:12.is a cheeky little thing. Clearly very well and lively now. But take
:16:12. > :16:17.us back to one year ago when she started behaving oddly around
:16:17. > :16:23.playgrounds. Roundabout in June last year she refused to go on any
:16:23. > :16:27.slides or swings. Was she looking scared? She would have a massive
:16:27. > :16:31.tantrum and would not go on them. Then sulking and wanting to gold.
:16:31. > :16:36.You thought it was just a personality? I thought it was just
:16:36. > :16:40.a phase. Then school teachers realised it might be a problem.
:16:40. > :16:46.They thought it might be dispatched her. She was sitting on other
:16:46. > :16:52.children, walking Into Doors. It all happened quite quickly, just
:16:52. > :16:57.over one month. You eventually to go to the doctors and they turn
:16:57. > :17:03.Julia Cutler times. They thought she was just a normal for dear old.
:17:03. > :17:06.Then the bombshell came, and what did they say? She struggled to come
:17:06. > :17:13.downstairs one does the morning at the to go to the GP to refer to a
:17:13. > :17:19.to Macclesfield. And they say she needed an MRI scan and they said
:17:19. > :17:28.there was something causing pressure behind her brain. It was
:17:28. > :17:34.causing hydro catalysts, and it was very dangerous. -- hydrocephalus.
:17:34. > :17:41.Then she was told to drink fluke, and she was absolutely fine. She is
:17:41. > :17:46.clearly very lively now. Yes, she is absolutely fine, as you can see.
:17:46. > :17:54.-- to drink flu. Which do you like best, the swings, the roundabout of
:17:54. > :18:02.the slide? The swings! You must be happy that she is back to normal.
:18:02. > :18:07.Of course I am, very happy. You are now raising money for Manchester
:18:07. > :18:16.Children's Hospital for the great work they did. Yes, we are. My
:18:16. > :18:24.niece is doing a fundraiser for that, and also SAMS, which is a big
:18:24. > :18:32.charity that we're involved in match. She is a bundle of energy!
:18:32. > :18:42.She wants your shoes! Why do I have butterfly shoes? Because you're a
:18:42. > :18:44.
:18:44. > :18:47.boy! He has not been called a boy for a while! Thank you. Sport and
:18:47. > :18:54.local swimmer Keri-Anne Payne has become the first Briton to qualify
:18:54. > :18:57.for the London 2012 Olympics. The 23-year-old, who races for the
:18:57. > :19:00.Stockport club, won gold this morning in the 10K Open Water event
:19:00. > :19:06.at the World Championships in Shanghai. I am concentrating on
:19:06. > :19:09.next year, because I have made the team and that is it. But yes, I
:19:09. > :19:15.just be to make sure that I keep on going to next year, because next
:19:15. > :19:19.year is going to be much tougher than this. Just one day to well
:19:20. > :19:27.before the flower show like Tatton Park, and among the organisers put
:19:27. > :19:30.in their finishing touches to their displays, we have a teacher for
:19:30. > :19:35.north-west tonight. There be to create an entire garden from plants
:19:36. > :19:44.grown from seed. These had to be ready by today. How have the team
:19:44. > :19:50.got on? Kate is at Tatton Park. The weather must have wreaked havoc.
:19:50. > :19:54.has, particularly this morning when our producer had to put in fence
:19:54. > :19:58.posts in the pouring rain. The garden is looking great. You will
:19:58. > :20:03.not be the first to have a look because we have had a royal visitor.
:20:03. > :20:06.The Duchess of Gloucester and died a short time ago and had a look
:20:06. > :20:10.around the Showground. She walked right past the north-western edge
:20:10. > :20:15.garden. I assume that she thought it was great although she did not
:20:15. > :20:21.say anything. Everyone has work very hard to get to this stage.
:20:21. > :20:25.Let's take a look back at what it took to get the show featured here
:20:25. > :20:29.at Tatton Park. After eight weeks of gathering and growing, and
:20:29. > :20:34.adding the finishing touches, all we have to do is transform this
:20:34. > :20:41.patch of land into something that can grease an RHS show. The team
:20:41. > :20:51.get to work. We're going to fill up the gap. Walking away round in a
:20:51. > :20:55.
:20:55. > :21:02.Janine is pleased with how the flowers have turned our. Will she
:21:02. > :21:12.be pleased with the accessories we have gathered? We have some lovely
:21:12. > :21:14.
:21:15. > :21:20.old tea comes. -- teacups, a vase, napkins. And my personal favourite,
:21:21. > :21:25.the cake stand. The team needs to work past. We're concentrating on
