:00:10. > :00:14.Good evening. Welcome to a special edition of NorthWest Tonight. I'm
:00:14. > :00:18.here at the Olympic stadium in London to find out just what's in
:00:18. > :00:24.it for us. And Happy Campers - I'm in one of the 73 Olympic training

:00:34. > :00:35.
:00:35. > :00:38.Meet Junior! Come on, I can take it! And I'm Ranvir Singh in

:00:41. > :00:44.the 72 year-old shopkeeper in hospital after a robber's stabbed

:00:56. > :00:59.welcomes the release of secret government papers. It's just 366

:01:02. > :01:12.over there and the athletes from all over the world congregates for
:01:12. > :01:15.what really is one of the greatest shows on earth. But the Olympics
:01:15. > :01:19.aren't just about sport - and according to the organisers down
:01:19. > :01:23.here today - they aren't just for the people of London or the South
:01:23. > :01:27.East. They say that the whole country will benefit and tonight we
:01:27. > :01:36.are attempting to show you how. Come back to me shortly for more
:01:36. > :01:39.but first back to Ranvir in Manchester. First tonight: a 72
:01:39. > :01:41.year-old man remains under arrest tonight following a fatal stabbing
:01:41. > :01:45.at a florist's in Greater Manchester. Cecil Coley is
:01:45. > :01:49.understood to be the shopkeeper. A group of men were apparently trying
:01:49. > :01:53.to rob the shop last night. One of them was stabbed to death. Mr Coley
:01:53. > :01:56.was also hurt and taken to hospital, where he was put under arrest. Our
:01:56. > :01:58.Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, has been following developments in Old
:01:58. > :02:01.Trafford. Sunflowers reflect bright summer sunshine, giving an
:02:01. > :02:04.impression of normality this suburban street. But today was far
:02:04. > :02:11.from normal here. A man was stabbed last night during a disturbance
:02:11. > :02:15.inside the local florist shop. He died outside in the street. I saw
:02:15. > :02:21.one guy shouting on the phone and a guy on the floor with people
:02:21. > :02:26.crowding round, so I called an ambulance and perform CPR. What
:02:26. > :02:29.state was he in? He was dead. year-old was also hurt during the
:02:29. > :02:36.scuffle. He was named locally as Cecil Coley, the shopkeeper.
:02:36. > :02:41.Relatives were left bewildered by what happened. He's a good man. He
:02:41. > :02:46.is always helping people, he would do what he can for people like he
:02:46. > :02:49.did for me and my family. It More bewildering for them was the fact
:02:49. > :02:54.that, while in hospital, Mr Coley was arrested on suspicion of murder.
:02:54. > :02:58.The man was arrested as a result of what officers found at the scene
:02:58. > :03:03.and what has been suggested from the investigation, which will be
:03:03. > :03:09.ongoing. Can you tell us anything about the man who died? Not at this
:03:09. > :03:14.time. It would not be appropriate. It is too soon to speculate exactly
:03:14. > :03:22.what happened in that shop last night, and how the dead man came by
:03:22. > :03:25.his injuries. But police did reveal that a 19 year-old man turned up at
:03:25. > :03:29.hospital last night with stab wounds. He was arrested on
:03:29. > :03:31.suspicion of robbery. And a gun was found in the area. Police are
:03:31. > :03:34.trying to establish whether it's connected with the incident. Only
:03:34. > :03:37.last month a householder was arrested in Salford when a
:03:37. > :03:40.suspected burglar was fatally stabbed in his home. He's now been
:03:40. > :03:47.released without charge. Meanwhile, inquiries into the Trafford

:03:49. > :03:53.Manchester Royal Infirmary to take control of Trafford General
:03:53. > :03:57.Hospital. The hospital's being taken over by a larger trust,
:03:57. > :04:00.because it's too small to be viable on its own. Wythenshawe Hospital
:04:00. > :04:08.had also been bidding to run it. The takeover should be finalised by
:04:08. > :04:12.next April. I would assure patients that the high quality of care they

:04:31. > :04:34.Manchester by a high speed rail link to London, according to a
:04:34. > :04:37.report out today. It was commissioned by a group which
:04:37. > :04:42.represents the eight largest city economies outside London. One of
:04:42. > :04:48.the region's biggest hospitals has been closed to visitors after an

:05:57. > :06:00.hear evidence of what happened after that. The coroner ruled all

:06:07. > :06:09.me, it is one big can of worms, and I want to know where it all started,
:06:09. > :06:13.whether it was through the cabinet meetings she had. Hopefully, it
:06:13. > :06:16.will bring out the truth. The then prime minister Margaret Thatcher
:06:16. > :06:20.visited Hillsborough the day after it happened. Many families believe
:06:20. > :06:23.the government wanted to deflect blame from the police on to fans.

:06:32. > :06:37.isn't overshadowed by the cabinet papers release. The release of the
:06:37. > :06:41.Cabinet papers should not detract from what the panel is trying to
:06:41. > :06:46.achieve because they are looking at the bigger picture and the Cabinet
:06:46. > :06:49.papers are only a small part of the overall jigsaw puzzle. The files
:06:49. > :06:52.covered by the ruling include reports presented to Mrs Thatcher

:07:15. > :07:19.not, it has to release the papers Back to Gordon now. You have a
:07:19. > :07:25.great vantage point. I believe you got much closer today. Yes, you are
:07:25. > :07:30.right about the vantage point. If we moved to the left, you can see
:07:30. > :07:37.the apartments where all the athletes will stay. Then, to the
:07:37. > :07:42.left, the basketball centre, and then, the magnificent Velodrome.
:07:42. > :07:47.But you are right. I managed to get inside. It was not easy, but I did
:07:47. > :07:52.manage. All of the buildings look fantastic. There is a lot of work
:07:52. > :07:57.going on still, as you would expect, lots of diggers, cranes and
:07:57. > :08:03.builders around, but the buildings themselves look splendid. When I
:08:03. > :08:07.got to the aquatic Centre there was the amazing sight of TV presenters
:08:07. > :08:14.spreading the word across the world. When I went into the aquatic centre
:08:14. > :08:24.itself, I was gobsmacked. The pro looked absolutely splendid, and the

:08:35. > :08:38.all very good for London, and well done London. What do the Olympics
:08:38. > :08:42.mean to the North West? It's over 200 miles away, and for some people
:08:42. > :08:46.in the region, the Olympics could be on another planet. Or could it?
:08:46. > :08:50.Arif Ansari has been looking at the impact the Games will have here and

:08:55. > :08:58.The promotional video is pretty clear - these are the London Games.
:08:58. > :09:01.A study by Nottingham University six years ago said regions like the
:09:01. > :09:06.North West would actually lose money as public investment is
:09:06. > :09:11.redirected towards the capital. There might be a business in
:09:11. > :09:17.Salford, or a hotel in Cheshire that benefits. Overall, money will
:09:17. > :09:22.be sucked into London during the process of the Olympics. No doubt
:09:22. > :09:29.that Lee Valley and London will do extremely well, but the rest of the
:09:29. > :09:32.country will do badly. But we're still paying for it. The total
:09:32. > :09:35.budget for delivering the Games is 9.3 billion. 1.2 billion is
:09:35. > :09:39.coming from London taxpayers. 2.2 billion from the National Lottery.
:09:39. > :09:48.And 6.0 billion is coming from taxpayers in the North West and the
:09:48. > :09:54.rest of the country. The government sees that as investment. It depends
:09:54. > :10:00.how you cut the figures. All of those figures, the 6 billion, have
:10:00. > :10:05.gone to suppliers in the UK, based across the regions. So is the
:10:05. > :10:10.region winning or losing? It is not going to benefit Blackburn, and it
:10:10. > :10:15.is not going to benefit me in any way. In the North of England we are
:10:15. > :10:19.just going to watch it on television. But they're already
:10:19. > :10:29.handing out the medals in Wigan. This is a fit club for overweight
:10:29. > :10:32.children. One of several projects in the region to have been awarded
:10:32. > :10:35.an "Inspire Mark", basically an Olympic badge, and the kids have
:10:35. > :10:39.been down to visit the new stadium. It gives you help and inspires you
:10:40. > :10:43.more than what you would do. I they have tried and succeeded, so why
:10:43. > :10:47.can't you do it? It is clear that the Olympics is making a big
:10:47. > :10:57.difference do lots of people here, but critics insist that it is still
:10:57. > :11:01.
:11:01. > :11:05.not enough. -- deference to -- difference to. If you're asking
:11:05. > :11:08."what's in it for us?" As far as revenue goes, quite a lot, it seems.
:11:08. > :11:11.According to the North West Development Agency 251 businesses

:12:10. > :12:15.teams? It is massive, not just in terms of kudos, but in financial
:12:15. > :12:24.terms it has been fantastic and it has a knock on effect on all master

:17:56. > :18:01.sale the Olympics, you have got to be excited. Yes, to qualify one
:18:01. > :18:05.year in advance is amazing. I can just focus now on training rather
:18:05. > :18:10.than on trials. There will be more trials next year in London, but I
:18:10. > :18:15.have qualified, I have done what I needed to do. How does it change
:18:15. > :18:18.your focus because it is Orly tours a day or on the train from

:18:53. > :18:59.I believe you have been talking to a few Olympians yourself? I have
:18:59. > :19:04.been chatting to one or two, but one in particular. I am talking
:19:04. > :19:08.about Beth Tweddle, the brilliant gymnast. She has been a world
:19:08. > :19:14.champion three times and European champion six times, so can she now
:19:14. > :19:18.become an Olympic champion? The celebrations today were Centre on
:19:18. > :19:24.Olympic Park but also in Trafalgar Square, where I caught up with Beth
:19:24. > :19:30.Tweddle and asked if being in London amid all this hype brought
:19:30. > :19:35.home the exceed that of the games to have. Yes, it is great to be a,
:19:35. > :19:40.to be part of it, with the crowds around Trafalgar Square. It brought
:19:40. > :19:46.it all to life. The fact that it is in London is a lifetime experience.
:19:46. > :19:51.You have been two Olympic Games before. Just try and explain what

:19:59. > :20:03.dream of every Gatwick to be part of the Olympics. With it being in
:20:03. > :20:09.London it is so close to home, it is the closest you going to get to
:20:09. > :20:13.having an event this big on your doorstep. How much would winning an
:20:13. > :20:18.Olympic gold medal in London mean to you? I am not fussy on the
