:00:04. > :00:08.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight. Our top story.

:00:08. > :00:12.The thieves who used a getaway car to run over a policemen. One of

:00:12. > :00:20.them is jailed for 19 years. A total of seven members of the same

:00:20. > :00:26.gang have now been jailed. They have no regard for members of the

:00:26. > :00:29.community or police alike. The potentially lethal gas and

:00:29. > :00:37.terrible smell forcing families out of their homes for the next six

:00:37. > :00:41.months. You are paying a mortgage on something that is not worth

:00:41. > :00:43.anything. A call for Liverpool to have its

:00:43. > :00:53.own gay village to boost the city's economy.

:00:53. > :01:01.

:01:01. > :01:09.Also, a busy weekend of football ahead. And back with us to present

:01:09. > :01:14.the sport is Olympic medallist Steve Parry.

:01:14. > :01:19.To help me prove it is one of the best weekends in football, Sammy

:01:19. > :01:22.McIlroy will join me with a preview to the start of the Football League

:01:22. > :01:25.season and the Manchester derby on Sunday.

:01:25. > :01:28.When PC Gary Marshall responded to reports of a robbery,, he couldn't

:01:28. > :01:33.have imagined how things would turn out. He caught the gang red handed

:01:33. > :01:37.and tried to stop them from escaping. But they ran over him in

:01:37. > :01:40.their getaway car, leaving him seriously injured. Today, one of

:01:40. > :01:43.those in the car, Christopher Jones, was jailed for 19 years. Our chief

:01:43. > :01:53.reporter has the story They were men who would do anything

:01:53. > :01:56.to get their hands on the cash carried by security vans. People

:01:56. > :02:02.who are ruthless, determined and prepared to do anything to commit

:02:02. > :02:05.the crimes and get the gainer from that crime. And when PC Gary

:02:05. > :02:09.Marshall tried to stop them, they simply ran over him in their

:02:09. > :02:12.getaway car. It happened as PC Marshall attempted to use his car

:02:12. > :02:20.to block their escape following a raid at Partington in Greater

:02:20. > :02:26.Manchester. The gang would not come quietly. They rammed the police car

:02:26. > :02:31.out of the way and ran over PC Marshall. I think they would have

:02:31. > :02:38.run over anybody or done anything to get away. The events that

:02:38. > :02:44.unfolded will be a with PC Marshall for a lifetime. He says he lived

:02:44. > :02:50.with constant pain and has frequent flashbacks -- flashbacks and

:02:50. > :02:54.nightmares. He said his body and mind had been scarred for life. The

:02:54. > :02:59.man seen smashing the police car window is Christopher Jones. The

:02:59. > :03:05.22-year-old was jailed for 19 years at Preston Crown Court after being

:03:05. > :03:09.convicted of grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to rob. Jones and

:03:10. > :03:15.his partners in crime carried out raids in Greater Manchester,

:03:15. > :03:20.Lancashire and Merseyside in 2009. Tracking them down involved

:03:20. > :03:24.officers from three forces. The gang stole high-performance cars to

:03:24. > :03:30.use in the robberies and then drove them at speed without regard to

:03:30. > :03:34.others. Christopher Jones is in the blue car. The car was dumped and he

:03:34. > :03:39.attempted to get away on foot. But cameras on the helicopter made sure

:03:39. > :03:47.he could not evade capture. He is the seventh member of the gang are

:03:47. > :03:52.to be locked up so far. Fears, residents living in Salford

:03:52. > :03:57.have lived with a terrible smell, occasionally rising into their

:03:57. > :04:02.homes. The smell is methane, which is potentially lethal. The

:04:02. > :04:07.householders have been given a few weeks to get out of their homes so

:04:07. > :04:12.the council can make the area safe. Our reporter is there.

:04:12. > :04:16.The six houses behind me are affected. The lady in the first

:04:16. > :04:20.house is going to have a baby in three-week so. She has just found

:04:20. > :04:25.out she will have to move out of her home by then for six months.

:04:25. > :04:31.The problem has rumbled on for years. But first, they had advice

:04:31. > :04:36.such as not using lighted candles in their house. There, but the

:04:36. > :04:41.council hopes this is a final solution. Birchfield Drive is on a

:04:41. > :04:46.leafy estate. The houses have to be ventilated around the clock. Alison

:04:47. > :04:51.Downie show be the problems. What is causing it is the gas seeping up

:04:51. > :04:56.through the ground. There is a crack along the back of the house,

:04:56. > :05:01.which is sinking. Monitors make sure the gas does not reached

:05:01. > :05:06.dangerous levels. You cannot see it, you can smell it. The smell of the

:05:06. > :05:12.gases, it smells like drainage. courses at the back of the houses

:05:12. > :05:18.because until the 1950s, it was landfill. By the 1970s, the methane

:05:18. > :05:24.was already a problem. We had been in the house three weeks. We

:05:24. > :05:28.noticed they were taking two houses down. Any reason why? We thought

:05:28. > :05:36.they were cutting another road through. It turned out to be gassed.

:05:36. > :05:41.How do you feel, all these years later? It our mercy. Now, part of

:05:41. > :05:46.the House will again be not down. realise residents have been under

:05:46. > :05:50.stress. We can be on site in September and have the works

:05:50. > :05:56.completed within six months. We will never have to come back to it

:05:56. > :06:00.again. You have a few weeks to find somewhere else to live? There is

:06:00. > :06:06.nothing. It is horrific. You are paying a mortgage on something that

:06:06. > :06:10.is not worth anything. It will never be worth any. There are

:06:10. > :06:15.residents who feel those fears are sensationalised. Others feel the

:06:15. > :06:20.health concerns are genuine. The Council is taking this seriously.

:06:20. > :06:29.They hope it is the final answer to a problem that has gone on for ages.

:06:29. > :06:33.There will be a public meeting on Monday.

:06:33. > :06:38.It black Paul based policemen who admitted having sex with women he

:06:38. > :06:42.met while working has been shelved. The judge said judd macro, who

:06:42. > :06:51.worked in a specialist sex crime unit, -- Jean-Christophe Novelli,

:06:51. > :06:57.had abused the trust of the public. -- detective Sergeant John crack.

:06:57. > :07:01.People in Lancashire have complained that rubbish will no

:07:01. > :07:04.longer be collected from the doorsteps. Rossendale council has

:07:04. > :07:09.told 700 households they will have to take rubbish to collection

:07:09. > :07:14.points, rather than have the lorry go down a narrow road.

:07:14. > :07:20.An acoustic wind pavilion has gone on display in Lyme Park. Named

:07:20. > :07:29.Aeolus after the Greek rule of the four winds, it will spend time at

:07:29. > :07:34.Salford Quays and the Eden Project in Cornwall. I've visited Iran. I

:07:34. > :07:38.spoke to the people who extract water in the desert. One told me

:07:38. > :07:43.that the well sometimes make a noise when the wind blows over the

:07:43. > :07:51.top. It gave me inspiration to investigate architecture which

:07:51. > :07:57.creates sound. Last night we featured a report on

:07:57. > :08:03.Car Planet in Warrington. People said they had paid deposits and the

:08:03. > :08:08.company had vanished. In the item, we featured this poster. We want to

:08:08. > :08:15.make it clear that Top Coat is not the subject of a complaint.

:08:15. > :08:20.A couple from Oldham have been charged with terrorism offences.

:08:20. > :08:25.Mohammed and Shasta Khan have been appearing before magistrates in

:08:26. > :08:33.London. Earlier, I asked the BBC Home Affairs Reporter what had

:08:33. > :08:37.happened in court. Mohammad Khan is 33, his wife is 37.

:08:37. > :08:42.They were brought to London from Manchester in the early hours. The

:08:42. > :08:48.main hearing took place just before lunch. After that hearing, Mohammad

:08:48. > :08:53.Khan was remanded in custody. They are accused of conduct in

:08:53. > :08:57.preparation for acts of terrorism. In addition, they face three counts

:08:57. > :09:02.of possessing a record of information likely to be useful to

:09:02. > :09:08.a person preparing an act of terrorism. They were arrested last

:09:08. > :09:14.week following a investigation last week by the North West counter

:09:14. > :09:20.terrorism unit. His wife's lawyers argued she

:09:20. > :09:24.should be allowed bail. It was not granted. The lawyer for

:09:24. > :09:30.the Crown Prosecution Service stood up and said the Crown was objecting

:09:30. > :09:35.to that. They lodged an appeal against that decision. It will mean

:09:35. > :09:41.there will have to be a separate hearing. The next main hearing,

:09:41. > :09:45.involving Mr and Mrs Khan will take place in August 22nd at the Old

:09:45. > :09:50.Bailey. The Manchester and Blackpool are

:09:51. > :09:54.well-known places with a thriving gay scene. They make money from the

:09:54. > :10:00.so-called pink pound. A report has recommended that Liverpool should

:10:00. > :10:07.have its own official gay village. That study commissioned by the City

:10:07. > :10:12.Council said it would attract visitors and boost the economy.

:10:12. > :10:18.The area around Stanley Street in Liverpool is already the unofficial

:10:18. > :10:22.gay quarter. Bars and gay support organisations can be found here.

:10:22. > :10:27.One man who works in a health centre welcomes the idea of an

:10:27. > :10:33.official village. More people are coming into the city because of the

:10:33. > :10:37.development. It is a destination for gay people to come to.

:10:37. > :10:42.Independent experts say that branding the area as a gay quarter

:10:42. > :10:48.would bring in more visitors and money. If it went ahead, Liverpool

:10:48. > :10:51.would follow Manchester in having a name to gay area. The council

:10:51. > :10:55.recognises Liverpool has a reputation of being less tolerant

:10:55. > :11:02.towards gay people than other cities. One idea behind this is

:11:02. > :11:08.that gay people would feel safer. An organiser of the Pride event

:11:08. > :11:13.says that homophobic attacks are rare, but it would help. I think

:11:13. > :11:19.having an official status would reassure people that this is not an

:11:19. > :11:23.area of the city that the council wants to hide away. The council

:11:23. > :11:31.says that being known as safe and tolerant brings benefits. Cities

:11:31. > :11:36.that have a and distinct and inclusive gay quarter of ten to do

:11:36. > :11:41.better and to be able to position themselves as gay friendly.

:11:41. > :11:45.area has daytime business companies. The council says money needs to be

:11:45. > :11:51.spent on this relationship. We need to make sure the streets are clean

:11:51. > :11:54.for the benefit of both sectors so that the night-time economy can

:11:54. > :12:02.thrive and the daytime will not suffer. It will be discussed next

:12:02. > :12:07.week. Still to come. Made in Manchester,

:12:07. > :12:13.one of the most powerful production cars makes a record appearance.

:12:13. > :12:20.All eyes on St Helens and Wigan Warriors for an historic rugby

:12:21. > :12:26.league game. From motorbikes to milk floats,

:12:26. > :12:32.scooters to skateboards, a former top gear presenter, Steve Berry has

:12:32. > :12:38.been trying to break the world record. He has tried to use 101

:12:38. > :12:48.different modes of transport. Earlier, he arrived at the BBC in

:12:48. > :12:48.

:12:48. > :12:57.his 98th vehicle, that flash sports car. And he switched to this, a

:12:57. > :13:07.battery-powered solo wheel. He came right into the studio.

:13:07. > :13:10.

:13:10. > :13:19.Here he comes. Well done. Welcome. Well done. That was 99. Yes.

:13:19. > :13:22.look tired! Has it been a hard week? It has. I was asked by my

:13:22. > :13:28.friends at Museum of Science and Industry if I could do something to

:13:28. > :13:33.help them promote my Transport Festival. A lot of people will see

:13:33. > :13:38.a commercial for a certain make of cars and motorcycles and boats, and

:13:38. > :13:43.they set it as an impossible dream. They had somebody moving from a

:13:43. > :13:50.scooter, to a motorbike, to a race car, and I thought I want to do

:13:50. > :13:57.that. This is a good excuse to do it. There was just one role,

:13:57. > :14:04.whatever I travelled by hacked to get me from A to B. Even if it was

:14:04. > :14:11.from this sofa to way you guys were. -- had to be. The previous record

:14:11. > :14:17.holder did 100 in 276 days. have done them in a week! Five days.

:14:17. > :14:24.This is 99 on the fifth day. What wonderful things have you been on?

:14:24. > :14:34.One of my favourites was called the Personal watercraft. Most people

:14:34. > :14:43.think of it as a jet ski. People have written them on holiday. They

:14:43. > :14:49.feel quite fast. When this one was delivered, I said why is it called

:14:49. > :14:54.the 260? I was told it had 260 brake horsepower, twice a normal

:14:54. > :15:04.family car. I thought I was going to end up in Timperley when I set

:15:04. > :15:05.

:15:05. > :15:09.off from sale water park! A lot of people remember the C 5. Clive

:15:09. > :15:14.Sinclair thought it was the transport of the future. The

:15:14. > :15:19.biggest problem was how low down it was in traffic. You have a couple

:15:19. > :15:26.of injuries. Hopefully, you will break the record by tonight.

:15:26. > :15:31.Absolutely. What else do you have to ride? I

:15:31. > :15:38.have three standby is in the garage. I have my Vintage bicycle, a

:15:38. > :15:43.motorcycle and a skateboard. Then you will be the world record holder.

:15:43. > :15:51.Go along to Transport Festival. It is free and fantastic. We had a

:15:51. > :15:56.great day today. Good luck. He is a good sport. We move on to

:15:56. > :16:04.sport are now, presented by a man who did not need any transport. He

:16:04. > :16:09.has an Olympic medal. Steve Parry is with us. And also my fellow

:16:09. > :16:17.Northern Ireland or Sammy McIlroy. I would have gone for a pair of

:16:17. > :16:21.flippers. We are talking football. We have the start of the

:16:21. > :16:28.championship with Hull against Blackpool. Last year, we thought

:16:28. > :16:36.they could stay up, do they have a chance of bouncing back, Blackpool?

:16:36. > :16:42.If there is one manager who can do it is Ian Holloway. Can you talk us

:16:42. > :16:44.through some of the players they have had in their? Barry Ferguson

:16:44. > :16:50.have had in their? Barry Ferguson and Kevin Phillips. Two experienced

:16:50. > :16:57.players. 38 years of age. Will he players. 38 years of age. Will he

:16:57. > :17:02.play a lot of football? What about the quality players they have lost?

:17:02. > :17:07.the quality players they have lost? It is hard to replace Charlie Adam

:17:07. > :17:13.and their main goal scorer. They are important players and they have

:17:13. > :17:18.gone. There is another team in action. Burnley will be playing

:17:18. > :17:24.Watford. He has done some recruitment with his first season

:17:24. > :17:26.at the club in its entirety. He has not bought any players that will

:17:26. > :17:28.not bought any players that will get the supporters jumping on his

:17:28. > :17:36.get the supporters jumping on his seeds. He is a young manager. He

:17:36. > :17:40.seeds. He is a young manager. He has done well. Kieran has come in

:17:40. > :17:45.as well. You are missing Chris as well. You are missing Chris

:17:45. > :17:50.Eagles. You have had good players he will be big holes in the team.

:17:50. > :17:56.Eagles and was an exciting player. He could beat people and score

:17:56. > :18:01.goals and make them. How would you rate Burnley's chances? The way

:18:01. > :18:06.they were last year, and if they can push themselves to was a play-

:18:06. > :18:12.off place, it will be a good season. Burnley will kick her off at

:18:12. > :18:15.Watford. On Sunday, the community Shiels. Manchester United against

:18:15. > :18:25.Manchester City, it is a friendly Manchester City, it is a friendly

:18:25. > :18:25.

:18:25. > :18:33.but not this time. It is important because it is against United. We

:18:33. > :18:43.want to win. Both managers will want the psychological edge this

:18:43. > :18:47.

:18:47. > :18:51.week. No doubt about it. Everybody said it is an opener for the season.

:18:51. > :18:57.Mancini will want a marker for the season. Beating them in the FA Cup,

:18:57. > :19:07.the community shield. You'll have your feet up. What would you be

:19:07. > :19:08.

:19:08. > :19:18.doing? I will be at a football game tomorrow. I will see what happens

:19:18. > :19:18.

:19:18. > :19:24.next. We have match commentary on BBC Radio Manchester on Sunday.

:19:24. > :19:28.Radio Lancashire will have the Blackpool match tonight. Now, the

:19:28. > :19:38.biggest derby in rugby league with St Helens and Wigan Warriors. With

:19:38. > :19:39.

:19:39. > :19:43.both teams in top form, this has got everyone excited.

:19:44. > :19:53.50 Years On and some things have not changed. St Helens against

:19:54. > :19:55.

:19:55. > :20:00.Wigan is still the big one. It is one of the biggest games of the

:20:00. > :20:10.year. The Challenge Cup is making it bigger. It is the best derby

:20:10. > :20:11.

:20:11. > :20:17.game. There will be a lot of atmosphere. That is why you play,

:20:17. > :20:23.to be in competing games. Every time we play against St Helens, the

:20:23. > :20:28.passion and the community, it is a special game for everyone. This

:20:28. > :20:35.will be a match-up of form teams. St Helens have won their last five

:20:35. > :20:42.and for Wigan, eight on the bounce. The stadium holds 13,000. We have

:20:42. > :20:47.got to be them and they have got to beat us. Saints and at Wigan, the

:20:47. > :20:53.Derby of all derbies. If they can contain sound Tomkins they will

:20:53. > :20:57.have a good game. I have never been so confident coming up to a game.

:20:57. > :21:05.The fashion in headwear may have altered since the 1961 final, but

:21:05. > :21:12.tomorrow, one set of fans will be planning their Wembley out it.

:21:12. > :21:15.-- Wembley outfits. Finally the latest from the CB40

:21:15. > :21:19.clash with Gloucestershire. The clash with Gloucestershire. The

:21:19. > :21:25.visitors have reached 164-four visitors have reached 164-four

:21:25. > :21:29.after 32 overs. We will have the result in our late bulletin.

:21:29. > :21:35.I will! You did not push Sammy McIlroy to

:21:35. > :21:40.say who will win on Sunday. I am putting him on the spot.

:21:40. > :21:48.You know me. I will go for Manchester United. How will

:21:48. > :21:53.Liverpool do this season?! It is good to see Kenny Dalglish back in

:21:53. > :21:58.again and I think he will do well. That is good enough for me!

:21:58. > :22:02.Thank you. We can look at the weekend weather. We are hoping for

:22:02. > :22:08.weekend weather. We are hoping for sunshine.

:22:08. > :22:14.A tiny bit of sunshine, but this is not a good August weekend. This is

:22:14. > :22:19.how it is shaping up after a nice afternoon. The weekend will be

:22:19. > :22:23.cloudy and cooler than it has been this week. You may have seen the

:22:23. > :22:29.National forecast and that for parts of northern England there are

:22:29. > :22:33.severe weather warnings. At the moment, not for us. It is the other

:22:33. > :22:39.side of the Pennines where the worst of the rain will be. I think

:22:39. > :22:44.we will see our fair share. We have had such a pleasant after-dinner

:22:44. > :22:51.just about everywhere. We knew it would be dry. But no great

:22:51. > :22:55.temperatures. Between 18 degrees and 22 greens this afternoon.

:22:55. > :23:04.Temperatures are easing off. That is good news through the night to

:23:04. > :23:12.night. This evening, the sunshine will still be around. As the night

:23:12. > :23:18.progresses, the cloud will be spinning in a from the West. The

:23:18. > :23:26.good news about tonight is the humidity has gone. It will be

:23:26. > :23:30.fresher. Down to 11 degrees. The picture tomorrow is grim. There

:23:30. > :23:38.will be a lot of cloud in the morning. Showers will be coming in

:23:38. > :23:44.through the morning. And you can see how patchy it is in nature. It

:23:44. > :23:52.is moving towards the Pennines. What this means is that there will

:23:52. > :23:57.be outbreaks of rain at any point in the morning. Earlier in the day,

:23:57. > :24:01.we were keen on improvement through the afternoon. It might get their

:24:02. > :24:07.little bit better, but the rain seems to be slowing down over the

:24:07. > :24:13.top of farce. It looks like the south-western corner will be the

:24:13. > :24:22.best place to be -- over the top of us. The Isle of Man will get the

:24:22. > :24:27.best of the forecast on Saturday. It will be feeling fresher. The

:24:27. > :24:35.rain moves, but showers keep on coming through on Saturday night.
