:00:03. > :00:07.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Gordon Burns and

:00:07. > :00:11.Ranvir Singh. Our top story: Murdered on duty - a colleague is

:00:11. > :00:20.jailed for killing Wigan sailor Ian Molyneux. Ian's wife, Gillian,

:00:20. > :00:26.gives her reaction to today's verdict. I will now try to rebuild

:00:26. > :00:31.my life with my gorgeous children and the eternal memory of Ian, my

:00:31. > :00:35.hero and true love. Also tonight: The North West pays tribute to

:00:35. > :00:38.racing legend Ginger McCain, who has died at the age of 80.

:00:38. > :00:42.Released on bail - the man arrested on suspicion of murdering an

:00:42. > :00:44.intruder waits to see if he will face criminal charges. And, after

:00:44. > :00:54.spending millions on the team, Manchester City splash the cash on

:00:54. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:09.their stars of the future. The widow of Royal Navy officer Ian

:01:09. > :01:12.Molyneux made a touching tribute to her husband today as the sailor who

:01:12. > :01:15.murdered him was jailed for at least 25 years. Gillian Molyneux,

:01:15. > :01:17.from Standish near Wigan, said the sentence offered no release from

:01:17. > :01:20.the pain of losing her soulmate. Winchester Crown Court was told

:01:20. > :01:23.that Lieutenant Commander Molyneux was the victim of a murderous

:01:23. > :01:33.onslaught by Able Seaman Ryan Donovan. Our reporter, Steve

:01:33. > :01:35.

:01:35. > :01:40.Humphrey, was in court. We heard that Ryan Donovan had gone

:01:40. > :01:43.on duty with the intention of shooting at senior -- senior colics

:01:43. > :01:47.who were going to have been disciplined for wilful disobedience.

:01:47. > :01:51.A few days earlier he had refused an instruction to carry out a

:01:51. > :01:56.cleaning task. He shot dead one senior officer and seriously

:01:56. > :02:03.injured another. In court to see Ryan Donovan sentenced was the

:02:03. > :02:05.widow of Lieutenant Commander Ian Donald -- Ian Molyneux.

:02:05. > :02:10.The end of a harrowing court hearing for Gillian Molyneux.

:02:10. > :02:16.Justice for her, her four children and her husband. Nothing can ever

:02:16. > :02:24.replace Ian, my husband and soulmate and the father of our four

:02:24. > :02:27.black beautiful children. -- four beautiful children. To his family

:02:27. > :02:29.in Standish, Ian Molyneux was an utterly devoted husband and father.

:02:29. > :02:39.To his naval family, Lieutenant Commander Molyneux was simply known

:02:39. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:45.as Molly, a gentle giant, a supreme professional. It is clear that

:02:46. > :02:51.Lieutenant Commander Molyneux acted extremely bravely and our thoughts

:02:51. > :02:54.go out to Gillian and the four children. This is the sailor who

:02:54. > :02:57.murdered him - Able Seaman Ryan Samuel Donovan. He fired his weapon

:02:57. > :02:59.six times in the control room of HMS Astute while docked in

:03:00. > :03:03.Southampton in April. The court was told: "Lieutenant Commander

:03:03. > :03:06.Molyneux reacted to the noise of the shots. As he turned to tackle

:03:06. > :03:08.the defendant he was shot in their head at very close range and died

:03:09. > :03:11.instantly." Hundreds attended his funeral at Sacred Heart Catholic

:03:11. > :03:14.Church in Wigan, his eldest sons, Jamie and Aaron, proudly displayed

:03:14. > :03:16.their own military uniforms. Among the mourners, members of the

:03:16. > :03:18.Shevington Sharks under-12 rugby team whom he coached. Ryan Donovan

:03:18. > :03:21.admitted murdering Lieutenant Commander Molyneux and attempting

:03:21. > :03:23.to kill three other crew members after volunteering for sentry duty

:03:24. > :03:26.while drunk. I will now try to rebuild my life with my gorgeous

:03:26. > :03:28.children and the eternal memory of Ian, My Hero and true love.

:03:28. > :03:30.Donovan admitted murder and attempting to kill three others. He

:03:30. > :03:33.had volunteered for sentry duty while drunk. Gillian Molyneux's

:03:33. > :03:38.final words today when a message for her children. Your daddy and I

:03:38. > :03:42.love you very much and our future will always be guided by him.

:03:42. > :03:45.In his summing up the judge said that the offence had involved

:03:45. > :03:50.premeditation, planning and an outrageous breach of trust. He said

:03:50. > :03:53.there was no evidence that Donovan had been mistreated by the Navy. In

:03:53. > :04:03.sentencing Donovan to life imprisonment, he said that he

:04:03. > :04:08.

:04:08. > :04:11.should serve a minimum of 25 years before he is considered for release.

:04:11. > :04:14.The world of horse racing is morning one of its most colourful

:04:14. > :04:17.characters - the trainer Ginger McCain, who died at the age of 80.

:04:17. > :04:21.Known as Mr Aintree, Ginger won the Grand National four times. Three of

:04:21. > :04:25.those wins were with the horse who became as famous as his trainer -

:04:25. > :04:29.Red Rum. Our Merseyside reporter, Andy Gill, is at Aintree now.

:04:29. > :04:39.Here is the statue of Red Rum. As you say, he won three Grand

:04:39. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:46.Nationals with Ginger McCain in the 70s. This year, his son won the

:04:46. > :04:50.National strainer. Ginger McCain had been ill for a little while. He

:04:50. > :04:54.had cancer and died this morning. He would have been 81 on Wednesday.

:04:54. > :04:58.He had come a long way since training horses on the beach a few

:04:58. > :05:01.miles up -- a few miles north of here.

:05:01. > :05:03.Southport Sands in the Seventies - where Ginger McCain trained Red Rum

:05:03. > :05:09.and turned himself from car salesman and taxi driver into

:05:09. > :05:16.champion National Hunt trainer. McCain won three Grand Nationals

:05:16. > :05:23.with Red Rum. At Aintree today they remember a man who helped win back

:05:23. > :05:26.support for the race when its future looked uncertain. Four Grand

:05:26. > :05:31.Nationals over 31 years, three associations with Red Rum. It was

:05:31. > :05:35.when the Grand National was at its lowest ebb. If it was not for his

:05:35. > :05:38.support Aintree would not be here today. Fans have been leaving

:05:38. > :05:40.messages of condolence on Aintree's Facebook page. On Twitter, McCain's

:05:41. > :05:45.fellow trainer Paul Nicholls wrote: Sad to hear of death of Ginger

:05:45. > :05:53.McCain. What a legend. He was a man of forceful opinions. Here on

:05:53. > :05:58.whether a woman would ever win the National. No disrespect to her. She

:05:58. > :06:03.is very brave. She has had a youngster and she is not going to

:06:03. > :06:07.get fit by riding in three or four races. He had so much passion for

:06:07. > :06:09.racing and sport and he was a great showman. He knew that, if he said

:06:09. > :06:14.something, no matter how controversial, it would make

:06:14. > :06:17.headlines. Red Rum is buried just by the

:06:17. > :06:27.winning post he retained tree, the scene of Ginger McCain's many

:06:27. > :06:29.triumphs. -- here at Aintree. The family say there will be a private

:06:29. > :06:32.funeral followed by a memorial service. Andy Gill, BBC North West

:06:32. > :06:40.Tonight, Aintree. Earlier, racing correspondent

:06:40. > :06:44.Cornelius Lysaght shared his memories of Ginger McCain with me.

:06:44. > :06:48.I put it to him that he was one of sport's great characters. He was

:06:48. > :06:53.indeed. I think that is an important point to make. It is a

:06:53. > :07:00.great Boyd that has been left in British racing and in British sport

:07:00. > :07:03.generally us up with his huge success around Aintree, Red Rum, Mr

:07:03. > :07:11.Aintree as they called him in the 1970s and then returning to the

:07:11. > :07:14.winner's enclosure after 27 years in 2004. He always had a catchy if

:07:14. > :07:19.sometimes not especially politically correct term of phrase.

:07:20. > :07:25.He became instantly recognisable on racecourses and beyond.

:07:25. > :07:30.Great days with Red Rum - the highlight of his career and always

:07:30. > :07:40.remembered as one of the greatest horses ever. Perhaps the greatest.

:07:40. > :07:42.

:07:42. > :07:46.To go to Aintree on five occasions and competed would be extraordinary.

:07:46. > :07:50.To have a six the 10th is absolutely astonishing. Perhaps now,

:07:50. > :07:55.looking back, fitting that his last Grand National, earlier this year,

:07:56. > :07:59.he was celebrating again. It was impossible for him to contain his

:07:59. > :08:08.delight that the horse trained by his son was successful in the race.

:08:08. > :08:12.I think, now we can reflect on it with the news today, that the

:08:12. > :08:16.McCain family bat on had been handed on. What has been the

:08:16. > :08:23.reaction today of the racing world? There is a real feeling that a big

:08:23. > :08:29.void has been left by the departure of this big man. Lots to celebrate

:08:29. > :08:34.- and the victories of Red Rum, the guy a -- the fact that a guy who

:08:34. > :08:39.was a small-time taxi driver could end up as one of the most famous

:08:39. > :08:47.horse racing people in Great Britain. Perhaps another fence

:08:47. > :08:51.could become the Ginger fence, one of the ways that British racing is

:08:51. > :08:59.thinking of paying tribute to him. That would be a great way to

:08:59. > :09:02.remember him. Thank you very much. More news from around the region

:09:02. > :09:04.now. A man has appeared in court to deny murdering a high-flying

:09:04. > :09:08.solicitor. 45-year-old Linda Bakewell's body was found naked and

:09:08. > :09:10.bruised in the boot of the accused man's car days after she was last

:09:10. > :09:12.seen alive. Reports from Somalia suggest Judith

:09:12. > :09:15.Tebbutt, who was kidnapped from a Kenyan holiday resort, is being

:09:15. > :09:18.held for ransom by pirates. Mrs Tebbutt, who is originally from

:09:18. > :09:23.Ulverston, was taken from a beach resort by armed men who killed her

:09:23. > :09:26.husband. The man arrested for apparently

:09:26. > :09:30.stabbing an intruder at his home has been released on bail. Vincent

:09:30. > :09:40.Cooke may now have to wait several weeks to find out whether he will

:09:40. > :09:46.

:09:46. > :09:49.face criminal charges. Protect my property?" Vincent Cooke's smart

:09:49. > :09:52.detached home remained sealed off by police throughout the day as

:09:52. > :09:55.forensic teams came and went. Mr Cooke, a 39 year-old father of one,

:09:55. > :09:57.was arrested on Saturday after an apparent intruder died of stab

:09:58. > :10:00.wounds on his doorstep. It is believed Mr Cooke had been

:10:00. > :10:03.confronted by two armed men and a scuffle developed. I was very

:10:03. > :10:12.shocked to hear it because it is a very quiet road and nothing like

:10:13. > :10:16.this happens down here. Raymond Jacob suffered fatal stab wounds.

:10:16. > :10:20.Vincent Cooke was released on police bail today pending further

:10:20. > :10:23.inquiries. He will have to answer that bail on October 17th when

:10:23. > :10:28.perhaps he will discover if he is to face criminal charges. This is

:10:28. > :10:38.not the first case of its kind in recent times. In fact, there have

:10:38. > :10:39.

:10:39. > :10:42.been three such cases in the past four months in Greater Manchester.

:10:42. > :10:45.In July Cecil Coley was arrested after an intruder was stabbed to

:10:45. > :10:48.death at the florist shop where he worked in Trafford. The 72-year-old

:10:48. > :10:51.was later told he would face no charges. Hannah Quirk lectures in

:10:51. > :10:59.law at Manchester University and says people have a legal right to

:10:59. > :11:02.use reasonable force to protect themselves. Obviously, in a

:11:02. > :11:05.situation like this, somebody has died so the police will investigate

:11:05. > :11:09.quite carefully to decide what happened. They will listen to the

:11:09. > :11:14.account of the person who has been arrested as well and look at the

:11:14. > :11:24.facts of the situation. Police are still establishing the facts of

:11:24. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:27.exactly what happened here. A man has died and four others,

:11:27. > :11:30.including a four-year-old boy, are critically injured after a fire at

:11:30. > :11:33.a house in Altrincham. Police and firefighters are trying to work out

:11:33. > :11:36.how the fire on Barlow Road started in the early hours of this morning.

:11:36. > :11:39.Kate Simms reports. Forensic officers scour the wreckage of this

:11:39. > :11:42.family home looking for clues as to what caused the fire which broke

:11:42. > :11:48.out just before five this morning. Neighbour Kevin Pearce helped the

:11:48. > :11:52.woman who lives here get out through a front window. It is

:11:52. > :11:54.something like the special effects of a film. I would not want to see

:11:54. > :11:57.it again. Two teenagers had already escaped and firefighters later

:11:57. > :12:07.rescued a young boy. But one man, named locally as David, was

:12:07. > :12:15.pronounced dead at the scene. could have got an end, David...

:12:15. > :12:19.Maybe those couple of minutes, if I could have got in David out.

:12:19. > :12:22.man who died is thought to be the partner of the woman who lived here.

:12:22. > :12:26.Tonight she is in hospital along with a three children, the luck --

:12:26. > :12:28.the youngest of whom is thought to be just four years old. All four

:12:29. > :12:31.are described as being in a critical condition. Meanwhile,

:12:31. > :12:34.Greater Manchester Police and Fire Service have launched a joint

:12:34. > :12:37.investigation. They want to know how the fire got out of control so

:12:37. > :12:41.fast. There are smoke alarms fitted in these houses, which means that

:12:41. > :12:44.the family should have had early warning of when the fire started.

:12:45. > :12:54.If they did and then subsequently still could not get out without

:12:55. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:08.being injured, we would want to know why. For two years, cameras

:13:08. > :13:11.followed Alia, who had been forced into a marriage in Pakistan. She

:13:11. > :13:14.had to deal with enormous pressure from her family but was helped by a

:13:14. > :13:16.specialist police unit in Lancashire. In a moment we will be

:13:16. > :13:20.speaking to Sergeant John Rigby from Lancashire Police, but first

:13:20. > :13:22.let's take a look at her story. Police in Britain have set up a

:13:22. > :13:29.network of specialist units to help the increasing numbers of forced

:13:29. > :13:33.marriage victims. This unit in Blackburn is one of three in the

:13:33. > :13:37.Lancashire area. This 18-year-old local girl has come into the

:13:37. > :13:41.station in a distressed state. It seems that, a year ago, the girl

:13:41. > :13:44.was taken by her father to Pakistan and forced to marriage a cousin

:13:44. > :13:49.twice a rage. Alia believes that the only reason she was allowed

:13:49. > :13:55.back to England was that she was pregnant. Recently they have packed

:13:55. > :14:03.up my stuff. My mum was going out and buying clothes that were two

:14:03. > :14:07.years old before my son saying that you are going to Pakistan. When I

:14:07. > :14:11.saw the ticket and they were one way, I panicked. Are you are

:14:11. > :14:17.absolute laid definite Lee sure that you want to make a clean

:14:17. > :14:21.break? I do not have a future of my own. My son deserves better than

:14:21. > :14:27.that. I think I had to grow up quite quickly. Those teenage years

:14:27. > :14:35.that you have, I missed out on them. If you cannot see no other way out,

:14:35. > :14:38.what are you supposed to do? You can find out what happens to Alia

:14:38. > :14:41.in 'My Forced Unwanted Wedding' on BBC Three at 9 o'clock tonight. I

:14:41. > :14:44.am joined now by Sergeant John Rigby from Lancashire Police's

:14:44. > :14:48.Community Cohesion Unit. Why did you want the cameras in?

:14:48. > :14:51.has gone on for so long and here we had the opportunity for the BBC to

:14:51. > :14:59.tell the story as it is and get it out to the wider audience. Why is

:14:59. > :15:02.that important to the job but you do? More often than not these

:15:02. > :15:07.victims are from different ethnic backgrounds but you have a wider

:15:07. > :15:12.audience out there in the community who do not know what to look out

:15:12. > :15:16.for. By telling this story, it is letting them become more informed.

:15:16. > :15:22.So teachers, doctors, who never that this person has contact with

:15:22. > :15:30.outside of the family? Absolutely. How prolific is it in our area?

:15:30. > :15:36.Nationally, the figures tell us that 8,000 to 10,000 victims a year

:15:36. > :15:42.of forced marriages. In Lancashire we get between four and five

:15:42. > :15:46.referrals a week. That is a lot. That is 250 to 300 incidents a year

:15:46. > :15:50.to deal with. How do you get over the cultural divide? There is a

:15:50. > :15:54.case of being a bit politically correct about these things at times.

:15:54. > :15:59.The cultural divide does not exist. I have done it for a number of

:15:59. > :16:04.years, worked within the Asian community in Blackburn. They know

:16:04. > :16:08.me as a recognised face. I have Asian officers on my team so the

:16:08. > :16:11.language skills are there. The whole team I work with his

:16:12. > :16:16.privileged to be with them -- it is a privilege to be with them. The

:16:16. > :16:26.work they do is superb. I am sorry we have so little time but I am

:16:26. > :16:28.

:16:28. > :16:31.grateful for your coming in. Well, it's time for sport now with

:16:31. > :16:34.Richard Askam, and there's a chink of light between the top two clubs

:16:34. > :16:36.in the Premier League at last, Richard. Yes, all because of two

:16:36. > :16:46.games yesterday which finally split Manchester United and Manchester

:16:46. > :16:49.City. More on the Blues in a moment, but United now have a two-point

:16:49. > :16:53.cushion at the top after a 3-1 win at home to Chelsea yesterday. The

:16:53. > :16:56.damage was all done in the first half of a match chock full of

:16:56. > :16:59.chances, but United took most of theirs and went in at the break

:16:59. > :17:05.three up thanks to Phil Jones, Nani and Wayne Rooney. Rooney even

:17:05. > :17:08.missed a penalty and Chelsea were also wasteful as it ended 3-1. Well,

:17:08. > :17:10.you used the word wasteful and despite the result, the main

:17:10. > :17:19.talking point from that game concerns former Liverpool striker

:17:19. > :17:22.Fernando Torres. Well, for all the goals he's scored

:17:22. > :17:25.in his career, there are probably none that will be remembered as

:17:25. > :17:35.much as his miss yesterday. He'd done the hard work, controlling the

:17:35. > :17:41.ball and rounding David De Gea And just to make matters worse, it

:17:41. > :17:44.was in front of The Stretford End. So that's one reason United are top.

:17:44. > :17:47.The other reason concerns City who let two points slip at Fulham. Two

:17:47. > :17:57.goals from Sergio Aguero had them in control at Craven Cottage but

:17:57. > :18:04.

:18:04. > :18:08.second-half goals from Zamora and Murphy cost City those vital points.

:18:08. > :18:10.City have outlined plans for a new academy, training complex and

:18:10. > :18:17.training facility a stone's throw from their main stadium, costing

:18:17. > :18:22.more than 100 million. City have cast their net across the

:18:22. > :18:29.globe, assembling a team with some of the world's biggest stars, but

:18:29. > :18:33.they are now looking to think big closer to one. These are the first

:18:33. > :18:38.pictures of their new training complex. It includes a 7,000

:18:38. > :18:45.capacity arena for Youth Games. terms of developing players, it is

:18:45. > :18:55.one thing having a great facility, it is another thing making sure

:18:55. > :18:56.

:18:56. > :19:00.that the ability of those players is realised. To emphasise the point,

:19:00. > :19:07.City took some of their players on to the ground where the new complex

:19:07. > :19:13.will be. For me, coming from the academy, to see someone coming

:19:14. > :19:16.through, it is just amazing. City have a long tradition to build on.

:19:16. > :19:22.Countless players from their academy have made it as

:19:23. > :19:27.professionals, including Jamie Hoyland, now Youth Training coach

:19:27. > :19:37.at each -- a Preston North End. There were numerous players who

:19:37. > :19:40.

:19:40. > :19:44.came through. The list is endless. That tradition that City will aim

:19:44. > :19:54.to build on with a facility that will make players capable of mixing

:19:54. > :19:55.

:19:55. > :19:57.it with Europe's elite. Just days after meeting with

:19:57. > :20:00.referees' chief Mike Riley, Kenny Dalglish saw two of his Liverpool

:20:00. > :20:04.players sent off in a 4-0 defeat at Spurs. Charlie adamant Martin

:20:04. > :20:07.Skrtel were the Reds who saw red, but the boss wouldn't blame the

:20:07. > :20:10.defeat on having nine men. He says there was room for improvement

:20:10. > :20:13.across the entire 90 minutes. Well it was a pretty successful weekend

:20:13. > :20:23.for our League One and Two sides with a couple of notable away wins.

:20:23. > :20:25.

:25:25. > :25:29.Today, at MediaCity in Salford, he met one of sport's greatest heroes.

:25:29. > :25:32.How did you feel when you were given the support? How little bit

:25:32. > :25:36.embarrassed at first because I have always done the sport because I

:25:36. > :25:42.love it. I have loved everything that I have done. I have had a

:25:42. > :25:47.fantastic life. To be recognised for it was really overwhelming.

:25:47. > :25:51.new sport that John is talking about is one of many that have kept

:25:52. > :25:59.people off the streets, literally kept him off the streets. Is that
