:00:02. > :00:06.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Ranvir Singh and Roger

:00:06. > :00:08.Johnson. Our top story: The family of soldier killed in

:00:08. > :00:16.Afghanistan say they're disgusted with the MoD wanting part of his

:00:16. > :00:20.wages back. I've read the letter again to make

:00:20. > :00:23.sure what I read was correct. I was shocked.

:00:23. > :00:26.The MoD have apologised but his friends tell us it's diabolical

:00:27. > :00:30.request. Also in the programme: A father whose daughter was

:00:30. > :00:34.murdered campaigns for Clare's Law - the right to know if your partner

:00:34. > :00:38.has a violent history. Save our stations, MPs' debate the

:00:38. > :00:42.BBC's plans to make cuts to local radio.

:00:42. > :00:52.And Sarah Mulkerrins is in Salford with a band gearing up for the gig

:00:52. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:03.Lance Corporal Jordan Bancroft paid with his life serving Queen and

:01:03. > :01:09.country in Afghanistan. But the Ministry of Defence says it paid

:01:09. > :01:12.the Lancashire soldier too much in his final wage packet. The

:01:12. > :01:18.government wrote to his family to reclaim just over 400 because he

:01:18. > :01:21.was paid for a month in advance, but was killed before the end of it.

:01:21. > :01:24.His parents say they're disgusted by the penny pinching. Our Chief

:01:24. > :01:28.Reporter Dave Guest has the story. It's clear Jordan Bancroft's

:01:28. > :01:38.parents are proud of their solider son who died in the line of duty.

:01:38. > :01:43.But, they say, the Ministry of Defence has now insulted his memory.

:01:43. > :01:46.It is like having -- stabbing your heart. It is disgusting. The family

:01:46. > :01:49.received this letter telling them they were due a payment for holiday

:01:49. > :01:51.time Jordan had spent in training. In fact, by pure chance, BBC

:01:52. > :01:56.Northwest Tonight filmed Jordan on a training exercise in Norfolk the

:01:56. > :01:59.year before he died. But, the letter went on to say just over

:01:59. > :02:09.400 would be deducted from the payment because Jordan died on

:02:09. > :02:10.

:02:10. > :02:15.August 21st 2010, but he'd been paid until the 31st. I was

:02:15. > :02:21.flabbergasted. I read the letter again to make sure what I read was

:02:21. > :02:26.correct. I was utterly shocked. You could have knocked me over with a

:02:26. > :02:31.further. He was killed on 21st August so what they are saying is

:02:31. > :02:36.you owe them 10 days back pay because he did not work? It is not

:02:36. > :02:41.the amount of money that is the problem. Money is not the issue, it

:02:41. > :02:45.is basically the letter and the wording of it that were quite

:02:45. > :02:48.shocking. -- that was quite shocking. Members of the Nelson

:02:48. > :02:52.branch of the Royal British Legion, preparing for this year's poppy

:02:52. > :02:58.appeal, share the family's sense of outrage. Words fail me. I think it

:02:58. > :03:04.is diabolical. Jordan did not know that he was going to die in the

:03:04. > :03:10.middle of August. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence says it

:03:10. > :03:13.regrets any offence and distress caused to Jordan's family. It says

:03:13. > :03:19.that personnel who were killed in the course of duty were dealt with

:03:19. > :03:25.care. It says recouping overpayments were designed to

:03:25. > :03:28.ensure feyness -- fairness to all. When Clare Wood met a man she liked

:03:28. > :03:32.on Facebook, she had no idea he had a violent criminal past. George

:03:32. > :03:36.Appleton became her boyfriend, and then her killer.

:03:36. > :03:39.He strangled Clare at her home in Salford before hanging himself.

:03:39. > :03:43.Ever since, her father has campaigned for police to be able to

:03:43. > :03:46.tell people if their partners have a history of violence. Today he

:03:46. > :03:50.welcomed a Government announcement that it's considering changing the

:03:50. > :03:54.law. Naomi Cornwell reports. George Appleton had a habit of

:03:54. > :03:58.contacting women through internet sites. When Clare Wood met him on

:03:58. > :04:02.Facebook in 2009, she had no idea that he had a record of domestic

:04:02. > :04:11.violence against previous partners. He went on to strangle her and set

:04:11. > :04:16.her body on fire at her home in Salford, before hanging himself.

:04:16. > :04:20.daughter was not a silly girl. Had she been given the opportunity to

:04:20. > :04:26.find out if he had done these things in the past, I would think

:04:26. > :04:29.that she would have done it so soon it would have made your eyes water.

:04:29. > :04:32.These are the last pictures of George Appleton, caught on CCTV on

:04:32. > :04:35.the day before Clare's body was found. The week before he'd smashed

:04:35. > :04:38.down her front door. That earned him a fine and a harassment order.

:04:38. > :04:41.But he had a history of harassing other women too. He'd had been

:04:41. > :04:44.jailed in 2001 for breaching a restraining order. The following

:04:44. > :04:47.year, he was sent to prison for harassment with fear of violence.

:04:47. > :04:49.He was also before the courts for criminal damage at the home of a

:04:49. > :04:52.former girlfriend. Now the Government's launched a 12-week

:04:52. > :05:01.consultation on plans to give men and women the right to know whether

:05:01. > :05:06.their partners have previous convictions for domestic violence.

:05:06. > :05:11.I would like it that those who are in a domestic violent situation to

:05:11. > :05:20.have this information available. But some civil liberties groups

:05:20. > :05:25.have concerns about the plans. Given these powers are already in

:05:25. > :05:30.place, we are very concerned that this new database is being proposed

:05:30. > :05:32.and a lot of funding will go into a new framework which could have

:05:32. > :05:35.serious unintended consequences. And a change in legislation could

:05:35. > :05:44.come even sooner, an amendment to the Legal Aid and Sentencing Bill

:05:44. > :05:47.introducing similar powers will be debated at Westminster next week.

:05:47. > :05:50.The Prime Minister's been asked to apologise for comments he's claimed

:05:50. > :05:53.to have made about the families of the 96 Liverpool fans who died in

:05:53. > :05:55.the Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Yesterday, it was reported that

:05:55. > :05:59.David Cameron compared bereaved families pressing for the release

:05:59. > :06:09.of more information to "a blind man, in a dark room, looking for a black

:06:09. > :06:12.cat that isn't there". A local MP today called on him to say sorry.

:06:12. > :06:21.Will the Prime Minister take this opportunity to apologise to the

:06:21. > :06:26.relatives and friends of the 96 Hillsborough victims for these

:06:26. > :06:31.grossly comments? This government has done the right thing by opening

:06:31. > :06:33.up the Cabinet papers to help those people find the closer they seek.

:06:33. > :06:36.A manager at Trafford Housing Trust, demoted for making comments against

:06:36. > :06:40.gay marriage, has received support from gay rights campaigner Peter

:06:40. > :06:43.Tatchell. Adrian Smith from Bolton had his pay cut after he wrote on

:06:43. > :06:53.Facebook that allowing gay weddings in churches was "an equality too

:06:53. > :06:58.far". But Mr Tatchell believes the punishment was harsh. Adrian

:06:58. > :07:03.Smith's comment was Martley homophobic and expressed a view

:07:03. > :07:08.that is shared by most of the population, including myself. Their

:07:08. > :07:12.former, I don't understand why Trafford Housing Trust have taken

:07:12. > :07:22.this rather severe decision to demote him and effectively cut his

:07:22. > :07:25.

:07:25. > :07:31.That is when a driver deliberately crashes into another vehicle to

:07:31. > :07:36.claim compensation. An insurance for -- firm it says that one car

:07:36. > :07:40.was involved in three cashes in one out. The other north-west hotspots

:07:40. > :07:50.are a junction four of the and 61 in Bolton and a roundabout where

:07:50. > :07:57.

:07:57. > :08:07.the All them bypass meet Manchester As budgets are squeezed, BBC local

:08:07. > :08:12.

:08:12. > :08:16.radio stations could lose up to a quarter of staff. BBC Radio Cumbria,

:08:16. > :08:25.one of five local stations in the region feeling the budget squeeze.

:08:25. > :08:30.It's facing a 20% cut: 12 out of 37 staff may have to go. Professionals

:08:30. > :08:34.who rely on the service are worried. It is all very well for those

:08:34. > :08:38.making the decisions to say you can use Twitter and Facebook, but a lot

:08:38. > :08:41.of people would not know how to do that. It really is very important,

:08:41. > :08:44.it is a life blood for certain parts of the community.

:08:44. > :08:47.What's caused this is the government's decision to freeze the

:08:47. > :08:50.BBC licence fee and force the Corporation to take on extra costs.

:08:50. > :08:57.But it's the BBC that's decided how to spend the money and local radio

:08:57. > :09:02.is not at the top of the list. The BBC has refused an interview but on

:09:02. > :09:12.her blog the Director of BBC News Helen Boaden writes: "Are the plans

:09:12. > :09:19.

:09:19. > :09:25.But in a Parliamentary debate, MPs lined up to disagree. It is coming

:09:25. > :09:31.up to a year when we had a terrible gas explosion. 200 families were

:09:31. > :09:36.evacuated. BBC radio covered it and no one to praise that coverage.

:09:36. > :09:40.defines who we are, as I'm sure it does in Cornwall. With the Minister

:09:40. > :09:43.agree with me that it is not just a question of what money goes where,

:09:43. > :09:50.it is a question of identity? the government seems broadly

:09:50. > :09:55.supportive. Other members have suggested closing down services and

:09:55. > :09:59.cuts to Radio 4 which would result in job losses. They suggested cuts

:09:59. > :10:01.to be the beat very that the same consequences. The BBC's plans,

:10:01. > :10:06.known as Delivering Quality First, are still open to public

:10:06. > :10:08.consultation. Still to come in North West

:10:08. > :10:14.Tonight: Steering his way to success across

:10:14. > :10:17.the pond - the local driver heading for life in the Indycar fast lane.

:10:17. > :10:26.And hitting the bull's-eye - the high-flying pooch with a penchant

:10:26. > :10:36.for pub games. Has she brought you any luck?

:10:36. > :10:37.

:10:37. > :10:47.of luck, she puts the opposition A huge collection of antique and

:10:47. > :10:49.

:10:49. > :10:52.rare books housed in the property in Cumbria is to be restored.

:10:52. > :10:56.Townend Hall in Troutbeck near Windermere is full of books

:10:56. > :11:03.gathered over the centuries by the Browne family. Angelina Socci

:11:03. > :11:08.reports. Showing signs of wear and tear,

:11:08. > :11:12.these books were collected by many generations of a farming family.

:11:12. > :11:16.Now owned by the National Trust, they are to be preserved for

:11:17. > :11:21.generations to come. It is a painstaking process and to

:11:21. > :11:26.restore this library: They are more than 1,500 books in this room,

:11:26. > :11:34.dating from the 16th century up to 1942. That restoration task lies

:11:34. > :11:40.with these two women. Minor repairs to tears in the pages. In this one,

:11:40. > :11:45.it has been repaired down here and along the edges. Then things like

:11:45. > :11:50.repairs to the corners of the books. Many of these books are extremely

:11:50. > :11:55.rare and preparing them has only been made possible after the

:11:55. > :11:59.National Trust received a grant of 14,000. Given the wide variety of

:11:59. > :12:02.the books and their ages, we have one of the top three libraries

:12:02. > :12:08.within the National Trust. But because the books have been well

:12:08. > :12:13.used, lots of them have torn pages so it is important to repair those

:12:13. > :12:16.things to give another few hundred years of life to the books.

:12:16. > :12:24.And delving into this library also provides an insight into the

:12:24. > :12:30.family's lives. I love this collection because there is so much

:12:30. > :12:35.evidence to the people who read the books, you can feel their presence.

:12:35. > :12:40.It has something very special about it. Also there is the fact that the

:12:40. > :12:43.Browns were Bookbinders. Papering over the cracks will be a time-

:12:43. > :12:47.consuming exercise. The whole project will take seven months to

:12:47. > :12:51.complete. Now it was going be the

:12:51. > :12:54.breakthrough gig for Manchester band The Slow Show. They were

:12:54. > :12:58.selected from a pool of new bands to support Elbow in a special

:12:58. > :13:02.concert in Manchester tomorrow night.

:13:02. > :13:05.However on Monday, their van was stolen with the drum kit inside.

:13:05. > :13:09.With no kit, it looked like they would have to miss their biggest

:13:09. > :13:19.gig yet. But the show will go on, and Sarah Mulkerrins is with the

:13:19. > :13:48.

:13:48. > :13:53.Well, that was Manchester band The Slow Show and a few days ago a

:13:53. > :13:55.rehearsal like this wasn't possible. That's because their drum kit and

:13:55. > :14:04.other equipment was stolen on Monday evening from outside drummer

:14:04. > :14:09.Chris Hough's house. Chris, explain to us what happened? I was loading

:14:09. > :14:16.up the van to come to Brussels on Monday night and my wife asked me

:14:16. > :14:21.to go to the supermarket with her so I was begrudging. Eventually I

:14:21. > :14:26.did go and when we returned an hour later, the van had disappeared and

:14:26. > :14:35.they had smashed through the back doors of the House, the front doors,

:14:35. > :14:39.and all the stuff had gone, some symbols and other things. He spent

:14:39. > :14:45.25 years collecting this stuff? and it has taken a lot of money to

:14:45. > :14:49.build everything up. A lot of people have been very good, Mike

:14:49. > :14:57.Joyce offers a drum-kit for the gig we have got on Thursday which is a

:14:57. > :15:07.big one for us. That is massive, isn't it? Yes, it is a great honour

:15:07. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:17.to support Harare elbow. We were chosen by a panel from that tour

:15:17. > :15:23.bans, we were lucky. You have gathered a new drum-kit in time to

:15:23. > :15:30.make the gig for tomorrow. The guy from Manchester Drum Centre sorted

:15:30. > :15:34.me out so I really appreciate that because we would have been up stuck.

:15:34. > :15:44.We have a logo on the front as well. We will let you get back to

:15:44. > :15:52.

:15:53. > :16:02.They sound good. I'm sure they will be fine regardless of their drum-

:16:02. > :16:12.kit. It is becoming unedifying, someone

:16:12. > :16:16.

:16:16. > :16:18.who Hardy plays is in the headlines. Mean Carlos Tevez by any chance?

:16:18. > :16:21.Last night, City released the findings of their internal inquiry

:16:21. > :16:24.over his apparent refusal to come off the bench against Bayern Munich.

:16:24. > :16:27.Tevez has been found guilty of five breaches of contract. They include

:16:27. > :16:30.refusing to play in a match, failing to follow his manager's

:16:30. > :16:33.instructions and bringing the game and club into disrepute. He was

:16:33. > :16:36.fined four weeks' wages, believed to be around 1 million, and has

:16:36. > :16:39.already served a two-week suspension. And Tevez and his

:16:39. > :16:41.advisers have reacted strongly to these findings? The BBC understands

:16:41. > :16:43.Tevez's advisers are considering suing manager Roberto Mancini for

:16:43. > :16:46.his comments after that match in Germany. They've always maintained

:16:46. > :16:50.he didn't refuse to play and Mancini's comments could amount to

:16:50. > :16:55.defamation of character. Here's what a sports lawyer thinks of the

:16:55. > :16:59.chances of such an action succeeding.

:16:59. > :17:05.This is probably part of a much wider picture between the club and

:17:05. > :17:08.the player. Ultimately, this situation will be resolved, not

:17:08. > :17:12.necessarily through the courts. I think there has probably been a

:17:12. > :17:16.long history up something that is not quite right. Maybe this is the

:17:16. > :17:20.latest chapter in that affair. And it's not over. Tevez does have

:17:20. > :17:23.the opportunity to appeal. Now, let's get back to football. While

:17:23. > :17:26.Bolton Wanderers and Burnley bowed out of the Carling Cup last night

:17:26. > :17:29.it was back to business for Manchester United whose fourth

:17:29. > :17:36.round tie took them down into the Football League, from where there

:17:36. > :17:41.were loads of goals for our sides too.

:17:41. > :17:47.Chalk one up to the reserves, Sir Alex made 11 changes to the side

:17:47. > :17:51.and they did not let him down. After this goal after 15 minutes on

:17:51. > :17:57.his hundreds star, Michael Owen made it two before this player

:17:57. > :18:02.scored the goal of the night. Tranmere march on in League One and

:18:02. > :18:10.are in the play-off zone with 82-0 win over Hartlepool. This came just

:18:10. > :18:17.22 seconds after the start. What did Preston have to do to win? They

:18:17. > :18:25.were 2-0 up on all that much. Two goals in three minutes then display

:18:25. > :18:31.at levelled it. They thought they had done it with this unbelievable

:18:32. > :18:36.third only for the opposition to equal with just four minutes to go.

:18:36. > :18:46.In League Two, at more come up suffering a similar Hanover this

:18:46. > :18:48.

:18:48. > :18:53.morning. It ended 3-3. Crew headed home from Cheltenham with all three

:18:53. > :19:00.points. They had won five in a row until this penalty put paid to

:19:00. > :19:07.their run. Macclesfield are flying and it was a spot-kick for them

:19:07. > :19:12.against Bradford. The City keeper was sent the wrong way. They are

:19:12. > :19:15.one win from automatic promotion. Plenty more Carling Cup action this

:19:15. > :19:18.evening with four of our sides aiming to join United in the

:19:18. > :19:21.quarter finals. Liverpool head down the M6 to face Stoke, closely

:19:21. > :19:24.followed by Man City who play Wolves. There are home ties for

:19:24. > :19:27.Blackburn against Newcastle, and Everton who host Chelsea.

:19:27. > :19:30.Highlights of those games on the League Cup Show on BBC1 at 11:30.

:19:30. > :19:35.Better still there's live coverage of all the games on BBC Radios

:19:36. > :19:39.Lancashire, Manchester and Merseyside.

:19:39. > :19:43.Now, the North West has a rich tradition in churning out stars in

:19:43. > :19:46.a range of sports. But when it comes to racing drivers, we've been

:19:46. > :19:50.in the slow lane. However, that could be about to change. Oliver

:19:50. > :19:54.Webb from Cheshire is on the verge of securing a place in one of

:19:54. > :19:59.America's top Indy Car teams, as Ian Haslam reports.

:19:59. > :20:08.Since the age of ten, Oli Webb's been living life in the fast lane.

:20:08. > :20:12.Having started off in karting, the Cheshire driver's quickly moved

:20:13. > :20:22.through the ranks of motor racing. Next up it's Indycar, America's

:20:22. > :20:26.answer to Formula One. They would do 240 miles an hour. Formula One

:20:26. > :20:30.doesn't do that. It is their main thing and they travel around the

:20:30. > :20:35.world like to Japan and other countries. What kind of fans do get

:20:35. > :20:38.over their? At the last race, we had about 210,000. This isn't the

:20:38. > :20:41.first time we've met Oli on North West Tonight: 18 months ago he was

:20:41. > :20:49.preparing for his debut in Formula Three, with Tony in the passenger

:20:49. > :20:56.seat. For me, it is always about the speed. I want to be at the top

:20:56. > :21:00.of what I do. Aylott comes with that, and be known in the north-

:21:00. > :21:03.west has come out of it. Of course no motorsports are without risk,

:21:03. > :21:06.and Indycar has found itself in the spotlight this month following the

:21:06. > :21:13.death of British driver Dan Wheldon during a race in Las Vegas. He

:21:13. > :21:17.raced for the Schmidt Racing team. I was with him that before he got

:21:17. > :21:23.in the car. It was an upsetting weekend, but we have to understand

:21:23. > :21:26.that that happens. As soon as we get in the car and we put the right

:21:26. > :21:29.pedal down, we stopped thinking about that. The danger will always

:21:29. > :21:39.be there, so will the chance for Oli to show his talents to the

:21:39. > :21:40.

:21:40. > :21:42.world. He flies out to the USA My fingernail marks are still in

:21:42. > :21:44.his seat! Finally tonight, after Mario

:21:44. > :21:46.Balotelli's hectic week with Manchester City, what with

:21:46. > :21:49.fireworks and demolishing Manchester United, what better way

:22:27. > :22:30.this story. Now all good sports teams have a

:22:30. > :22:34.mascot, and the darts team at The Royds Arms pub in Rochdale is no

:22:34. > :22:37.exception. In fact its members are so proud of Jip the dog - yes, dog

:22:37. > :22:41.- they've made him an honorary member. So what does Jip bring to

:22:41. > :22:45.the team? Well you could say he's a real high flier, as Abbie Jones has

:22:45. > :22:50.been finding out. Meet Jip, the border collie. She's

:22:50. > :23:00.a dog of many talents. In fact, when it comes to doggie tricks, Jip

:23:07. > :23:12.Jip's athletic fetching skills have earned her a place in the pub's

:23:12. > :23:17.darts team. And she's really hit the bull's-eye with its members.

:23:17. > :23:22.Nothing like it before. There is no like it in this town. Definitely

:23:22. > :23:26.not! She is brilliant. You don't have to get your darts out of the

:23:31. > :23:34.brought you any luck? Loads of luck. She puts the opposition of like you

:23:34. > :23:44.have never known. Jip's sporting interests aren't confined to darts

:24:09. > :24:19.Kenny's got more tricks in store for Jip, but for now, she's

:24:24. > :24:33.What a dark! Something to make you happy. She looked like she was on a

:24:37. > :24:42.Yesterday, around this time, we were asking Diane how we could

:24:42. > :24:47.spice up her walk. We have got some excellent suggestions that came in.

:24:47. > :24:56.Anyway, do one of the first ones. I'm going to stand here, I am not

:24:56. > :25:02.Debate turned out to be better than we anticipated. We talked about

:25:02. > :25:07.showers, there were some, but for many places we were bone dry. There

:25:07. > :25:10.was a real nice afternoon of sunshine for most of us. You can

:25:11. > :25:14.track the showers that move into Cumbria. Over the last couple of

:25:14. > :25:19.hours, they became more widespread. But the story is for them to get

:25:19. > :25:24.out of the way this evening and for us to be fairly clear tonight.

:25:24. > :25:28.Unfortunately, it will feel fairly chilly again. It was cool last

:25:28. > :25:31.night. Same story tonight. You can see the lighter areas on the map

:25:31. > :25:37.and that is where the cloud cover will break. Overnight, temperatures

:25:37. > :25:42.could be as low as five. It will only be for a short while because

:25:42. > :25:49.the map is darkening in the south. An area of rain is pushing to us in

:25:49. > :25:53.the early hours of the morning. It will put further north later

:25:53. > :25:57.through the night. Overnight temperatures will be boosted a bit

:25:57. > :26:02.with the arrival of the cloud cover all rain, around seven degrees. But

:26:02. > :26:06.this is not a good picture. The brain pushes north and there is

:26:06. > :26:10.more to come. It will be light and patchy through the morning. Past

:26:10. > :26:13.lunch time, that is when it will take hold. There will be a heavy

:26:13. > :26:17.burst from time to time. If you are lucky, especially in parts of

:26:17. > :26:20.Cumbria, the Isle of Man and Lancashire, he will not see a lot

:26:21. > :26:24.because it is coming from the south. But through the afternoon, it will

:26:24. > :26:29.be trying to spread everywhere. Temperatures through the day were

:26:29. > :26:33.12 and 13 degrees, but you have the sunshine. Tomorrow, not a glimpse

:26:34. > :26:39.of sun so even though the same, it will feel fairly cool.

:26:39. > :26:44.We will brighten up your evening. I'm not looking forward to this.
