:00:05. > :00:08.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight. I'm Ranvir Singh. Tonight:
:00:08. > :00:12.Manchester will rock to the sound of pop stars from throughout the
:00:12. > :00:17.world in aid of Children in Need. It's one of the biggest events of
:00:17. > :00:20.its kind in the North West and we have a ring side seat.
:00:20. > :00:23.And I'm Roger Johnson in the studio. Also in the programme tonight:
:00:23. > :00:33.On swine flu alert - one of the country's critical care centres is
:00:33. > :00:35.
:00:35. > :00:40.based in the North West. When Mike's laptop was stolen, who work
:00:40. > :00:43.-- they were and banking on this man's computer skills. Find out how
:00:43. > :00:45.he tracked it down from thousands of miles away.
:00:45. > :00:55.And where there's money, there's brass. How a legacy has brought
:00:55. > :01:04.
:01:04. > :01:08.Hello and welcome to the MEN Arena where 10,000 fans are waiting to
:01:08. > :01:14.see Lady Gaga kick-off this concert in half an hour. We cannot take you
:01:14. > :01:18.in here because it is a closed set. Lady Gaga is still rehearsing.
:01:18. > :01:21.Anyway, hopefully, we will be in a very soon, but later on I will be
:01:21. > :01:26.telling you all about a fund- raising dinner with Gary Barlow,
:01:26. > :01:32.and also find that Howard is one of the most faint -- famous faces in
:01:32. > :01:34.music was snubbed by Stuart Flinders. I kid you not.
:01:34. > :01:37.Wythenshawe Hospital has been chosen to be the specialist centre
:01:37. > :01:40.in the North of England for patients needing intensive
:01:40. > :01:45.treatment for swine flu. Last year the hospital became an emergency
:01:45. > :01:48.centre because of a surge in cases of the virus. Today it's been named
:01:48. > :01:53.as one of five hospitals which will now provide the highly specialist
:01:53. > :01:56.treatment called ECMO. Our health correspondent Laura Yates reports.
:01:56. > :02:01.January this year and the cardiac ward at Wythenshawe Hospital is
:02:01. > :02:06.full of seriously ill patients. All have swine flu. All are on ECMO
:02:06. > :02:13.machines. The team looking after them and this unit set up with just
:02:13. > :02:16.24 hours notice when cases of swine flu soared. There in that ward when
:02:16. > :02:20.we were filming was Michael Smith from Macclesfield. Today he's fit
:02:20. > :02:24.and healthy again. But when he fell ill with swine flu, doctors told
:02:24. > :02:34.his family he was going to die. He spent 11 days on ECMO, three months
:02:34. > :02:35.
:02:35. > :02:41.in hospital. From collapsing on the drive outside it and waking up in
:02:41. > :02:47.hospital six weeks later, there was nothing in their apart from
:02:47. > :02:51.nightmares and things going on within my head. I am very grateful.
:02:51. > :02:56.Extremely grateful for all the hard work that was put in and the fact
:02:56. > :03:01.that there was actually a ECMO machine available to me without
:03:01. > :03:04.that we wouldn't be having this conversation. Two years ago, there
:03:04. > :03:06.was just one specialist ECMO centre in England in Leicester. Today,
:03:06. > :03:10.there are five including this one in Wythenshawe. Each ECMO machine
:03:10. > :03:15.costs 30,000. But it's the specialist treatment and 24 hour
:03:15. > :03:24.care that really costs. Which means ECMO beds are four to five times
:03:24. > :03:28.more expensive as an ordinary bed in intensive care. Because the
:03:28. > :03:33.lungs are infected with a very severe pneumonia and they are
:03:33. > :03:38.stiffened don't work properly, they are unable to get oxygen into the
:03:38. > :03:42.blood. Are we trying it out, put oxygen back into the blood, put it
:03:42. > :03:45.back again and the lungs don't need to be doing anything. The hospital
:03:45. > :03:51.has space to look after five patients on ECMO. But they hope
:03:51. > :03:53.that this flu season will not be as bad as the last.
:03:53. > :03:57.A soldier killed yesterday in Afghanistan's been named as Lance
:03:57. > :04:01.Corporal Peter Eustace from Liverpool. He died from an IED
:04:01. > :04:04.explosion during a joint patrol with the Afghan National Army. In a
:04:04. > :04:10.tribute, the army says his "depth of character, selflessness and
:04:10. > :04:12.cheerful disposition" will be sorely missed.
:04:12. > :04:15.The Morecambe Bay Trust has admitted that over 800 patients
:04:15. > :04:19.failed to get urgent follow-up hospital appointments because of a
:04:19. > :04:22.problem with the bookings system. The Trust also admits there are
:04:22. > :04:27.less urgent cases on top of this number who have yet to be offered
:04:27. > :04:29.their new appointments. A club in Preston which hosted a
:04:29. > :04:33.cage fighting event involving children has not had its licence
:04:33. > :04:37.revoked. Pictures of two eight- year-old boys cage-fighting while
:04:37. > :04:40.adults cheered them on was posted on the internet. At the time,
:04:40. > :04:43.Preston Council said it would review the club's licence. The club
:04:43. > :04:48.must now give notice of any event which would involve contact between
:04:48. > :04:51.children under 10 years old. Detectives investigating the theft
:04:51. > :04:55.of a number of poppy collection boxes across Cheshire have made an
:04:55. > :05:02.arrest. Around ten tins with money in were taken from shops in
:05:02. > :05:05.Warrington and Frodsham. A 33-year- old man is being questioned.
:05:05. > :05:08.When Mike Birtwistle had his company laptop stolen abroad, he
:05:08. > :05:12.thought he'd never see it again. The computer contained photos as
:05:12. > :05:15.well as sensitive work data. But Mike from Chorley, and whoever took
:05:15. > :05:18.it, reckoned without the computer skills of Mike's friend and
:05:18. > :05:22.business partner Dave Duffy. Dave accessed the laptop from thousands
:05:22. > :05:28.of miles away, opened the webcam and took a photo of the alleged
:05:28. > :05:31.thief. The police have now recovered it. Here's Abbie Jones.
:05:31. > :05:39.Mike Birtwistle had been enjoying a family holiday in Tenerife when he
:05:39. > :05:48.was broken into. I was gutted. We thought the chances of it turning
:05:48. > :05:50.up again when male. -- won nothing. But Mike's colleague, Dave, from
:05:50. > :05:53.Wigan, an IT expert, had other ideas. Using remote control
:05:53. > :06:00.software, he tracked down the stolen laptop in England, while it
:06:00. > :06:07.was being used in Tenerife, taking control of it. Every second going
:06:07. > :06:12.connection to die or the computer to be disconnected or something.
:06:12. > :06:18.But it didn't. I said, that is brilliant. It as the information
:06:19. > :06:24.and send it out to Tenerife. He said, I am honoured. I am using it.
:06:24. > :06:28.But then they've got cleverer. He turned the webcam on on Mike's
:06:28. > :06:31.stolen laptop and was looking at the man on the other side of the
:06:31. > :06:35.Computer for a stop it was unbelievable that this man was
:06:35. > :06:39.sitting in Tenerife and I was in England and I had control of the
:06:39. > :06:44.computer. The funny thing is the guy turned around, realised his
:06:44. > :06:51.computer had come to life and started battling with Dave with the
:06:51. > :06:56.cursor trying to shut it down. didn't win and Dave e-mailed it to
:06:56. > :07:01.Mike. Dave says he is proud but isn't keen on the headlines his
:07:01. > :07:11.skills have generate it. I will take being called a peak for a
:07:11. > :07:15.
:07:15. > :07:20.while. It is great to have won over the criminals, for a change. There
:07:20. > :07:23.is only one ticket in town tonight. All four Children In Need.
:07:23. > :07:26.Back to Ranvir now and her vantage point over looking the MEN Arena
:07:26. > :07:32.for the concert they're all talking about. We were both kicked out! As
:07:32. > :07:37.were all these fans. The funny thing is, who did you bump into
:07:37. > :07:44.twice in the last half-hour? Lady Gaga! We have been trying to find
:07:44. > :07:49.her all day. She walked past you? said hello and she blanked me.
:07:49. > :07:54.can you expect? We have had such a great day to day. We have been dry
:07:54. > :07:57.to chase all these stars around today and it is such a big thing
:07:57. > :08:03.for Children In Need. Last night, there was this charity dinner that
:08:03. > :08:07.Gary Barlow hosted. It was amazing. That Bentley was up for auction
:08:07. > :08:11.last night. The bidding ended a few minutes later with a bidding war
:08:11. > :08:19.between Gary Barlow and a businessman sat at a table in front
:08:19. > :08:22.of me. It ended at 214,000. The business Saul Zadka. But he did it
:08:22. > :08:28.on the proviso that Gary Barlow delivered the Bentley to him. All
:08:28. > :08:33.sorts of a rising money. -- amazing money. Today you have been
:08:33. > :08:38.accosting people. You know what it is like. Stars are very charming
:08:38. > :08:44.for the most part, sometimes grumpy. And then all these people around
:08:44. > :08:50.them. I love watching them. They are trying to protect the talent
:08:50. > :09:00.etc. Here is what happened today when we were out into the backyard.
:09:00. > :09:06.It is all about who is in and out. Gary Barlow is in, it is his show.
:09:06. > :09:14.How was it going? Not too bad. Everyone in good spirits? Yes.
:09:14. > :09:22.Thank you for coming for. Hugh Laurie was in. Coldplay are in.
:09:22. > :09:25.They're out. They were in making sure everything would be all right
:09:25. > :09:31.on the night. They queued from early morning to make sure they
:09:31. > :09:35.would get a good view. We were in as well. We are at the Arena's back
:09:35. > :09:40.gate, which is not as bad as it sounds because all the big names
:09:40. > :09:45.have got to come past us. James Morrison was in. Competition for
:09:45. > :09:50.the best dressing room? I don't think so. I haven't felt that,
:09:50. > :09:56.anyway. Maybe I need to up my game and say, whether Heller's my mind
:09:56. > :10:01.that so for?!. I was talking to James Morrison and he said he
:10:01. > :10:07.didn't like to -- his dressing room. His battle word? It is going to
:10:07. > :10:14.kick-off! You could take him. he looks handy and wiry. What do
:10:14. > :10:18.you do? Choreography. And they made to carry your own back in? I must
:10:18. > :10:26.admit I missed a couple of the big names. That is me and the producer
:10:26. > :10:34.talking while Kenny Rowland strolls in. I may not have got every man
:10:34. > :10:41.and his dog but I got the dog. What you doing? I am a PA. What is the
:10:42. > :10:46.dog called? Lola. Those that borrow in are going to have a great night.
:10:46. > :10:52.-- those that are in. It is Jamie come. We are thrilled
:10:52. > :10:56.to see you. I am thrilled you are thrilled. You on very shortly.
:10:56. > :11:01.Last night you were at this dinner and you did an amazing performance
:11:01. > :11:05.with a standing ovation. What was a lie? Gary asked me to do it
:11:05. > :11:09.personally so you don't turn down a request from Gary Barlow. It was a
:11:09. > :11:14.great event and everyone had a great time. The food was great.
:11:14. > :11:20.What more do you want? It was a great night. Those things cannot
:11:20. > :11:24.not be that fun but that was a really fun won -- one. And what
:11:24. > :11:29.about tipping in the North West? is very important that there is
:11:29. > :11:33.life beyond London and Manchester proved that last night. What are
:11:33. > :11:39.you planning for tonight? What can people expect? On television it is
:11:39. > :11:43.on at 8pm. I am performing with Hugh Laurie. He is doing his New
:11:43. > :11:48.Orleans thing. He asked me to come down and sing with him so I am here
:11:48. > :11:52.because of him. I am happy about that. Last night, he breezed on and
:11:52. > :11:57.it was like it was as easy as breathing to you, singing. Do you
:11:57. > :12:02.get nervous or anything? Yes, there are a little bit of nerves. If you
:12:03. > :12:08.don't get nervous, you are not excited. When you have done it a
:12:08. > :12:12.lot, you know how you are going to do it and it is important it feels
:12:12. > :12:19.like a part of you. Who are you looking forward to see? There are
:12:19. > :12:22.so many people. Pick a name in the book. I cannot wait to see Elbow. I
:12:22. > :12:28.have seen quite a people in rehearsal and it is going to be a
:12:28. > :12:31.great show. Did you know we got booted out when Lady Gaga came on?
:12:31. > :12:36.Crikey, I guess I am looking forward to that, too. It is going
:12:36. > :12:39.to be brilliant and weird as usual. I know tonight is going to raise a
:12:39. > :12:44.lot of money, so enjoy it. Thank you.
:12:44. > :12:51.Later on, we will be hearing from Gary Barlow, the man himself, there
:12:51. > :12:55.is only one man that came -- that can get all these people to get the.
:12:55. > :12:59.Diane has been speaking to him, this is a sneak preview. If Lady
:12:59. > :13:07.Gaga wants to come out of a birthday cake, she can do that.
:13:07. > :13:17.are hoping for that. Exactly for. More of that to come, but back to
:13:17. > :13:17.
:13:17. > :13:19.Premier league clubs across the region have built a reputation for
:13:19. > :13:23.working closely with local communities through sponsorship and
:13:23. > :13:26.coaching. But Everton FC is going one step further - it's going to
:13:26. > :13:29.open a high school. It's part of the government strategy to develop
:13:29. > :13:32.free schools - free to attend, and free of council control. But what
:13:32. > :13:34.can Everton bring to teenagers in Merseyside? And what's in it for
:13:34. > :13:44.them? Nina Warhurst's been at Goodison Park.
:13:44. > :13:46.
:13:46. > :13:50.You heard right - a Premier League Football club running a school.
:13:51. > :13:55.Details are under discussion but the club says it plans to enrolled
:13:55. > :13:59.those who were expelled or chose to leave mainstream education. What is
:13:59. > :14:02.in it for us is that our fans come here weekly to supporter club and
:14:02. > :14:08.many young people who come here require somebody to intervene and
:14:08. > :14:14.support them at times where it is hard. Our football club wants to
:14:14. > :14:17.reach out and do that. It is all true mystic. Up to 200 pupils from
:14:17. > :14:23.local area are said to be given opportunities they may not have
:14:23. > :14:30.otherwise enjoyed. Some parents are concerned at three schools may not
:14:30. > :14:33.be available to all and that may prove divisive. Plus, free schools
:14:33. > :14:38.walkout side of council control and as long as they meet government
:14:38. > :14:42.standards, teachers do not need to be qualified. The best thing for
:14:42. > :14:52.all schools and Liverpool is that education is organised with
:14:52. > :14:55.
:14:56. > :15:02.oversight. Free schools and academies undermine that. If Ged
:15:02. > :15:05.has worked across state schools in Merseyside. We have too many young
:15:05. > :15:12.people in Merseyside who are on the streets and not able to be in
:15:12. > :15:16.schools. This is not about politics, it is about need. Everton's school
:15:16. > :15:19.gates are set to open in September of next year.
:15:19. > :15:23.Staying with Everton for a moment and midfielder Marouane Fellaini
:15:23. > :15:26.has given the club a huge boost by signing a new five year contract.
:15:26. > :15:28.He's become a vital part of David Moyes's team since arriving for 15
:15:28. > :15:35.million in 2008. Everton say they're delighted by Fellaini's
:15:35. > :15:38.decision to commit his future to the club.
:15:38. > :15:41.Across the city, Liverpool's Luis Suarez returned to training today
:15:41. > :15:43.as he faces racism charges brought by the Football Association. Suarez
:15:43. > :15:46.was charged yesterday with racially abusing Manchester United defender
:15:46. > :15:48.Patrice Evra during last month's Premier League match. He's always
:15:48. > :15:57.denied the allegation and his Manager Kenny Dalglish has
:15:57. > :16:06.reiterated that he has the club's support. Before we go back to the
:16:06. > :16:08.megastars of the pop world, a more sedate story for you. Brass and
:16:08. > :16:11.Military bands are an important part of the region's cultural
:16:11. > :16:14.heritage and one man's generosity will help keep that tradition alive.
:16:14. > :16:17.William Higham ran a successful florist business in Wigan and he
:16:17. > :16:20.left almost 2 million to the town in his will. But with a clear
:16:20. > :16:23.stipulation, as Yunus Mulla explains.
:16:23. > :16:28.The historic sight and sound of a brass band will for many of us
:16:28. > :16:31.evoke fond memories of a not too distant past. It's the same for
:16:31. > :16:34.William Higham, who lived near Mains Park in Wigan. The Victorian
:16:34. > :16:37.bandstand would attract him and other crowds, but in the years
:16:37. > :16:40.before his death in 2008, performances were rare because of
:16:40. > :16:50.cost and with that in mind he left money to restore this proud
:16:50. > :16:52.
:16:52. > :16:57.tradition. We are extremely excited that his generosity, putting aside
:16:57. > :17:07.some money to pay for bands, so music will be coming back here
:17:07. > :17:12.
:17:12. > :17:17.which is something that was very A handwritten note. It meant a
:17:17. > :17:22.lengthy court battle before his wishes could be carried out. He
:17:22. > :17:26.spent many of his boyhood weekends at the bandstand. Before he died,
:17:26. > :17:30.he donated another sum of money which helped trigger this
:17:30. > :17:35.restoration programme currently ongoing in the park. The former RAF
:17:35. > :17:39.pilot flew with Lancasters and had a soft spot for military bands.
:17:39. > :17:42.There is a lot of support and we used to get hundreds of people
:17:42. > :17:51.listening to the band and Wigan. next summer, Billy will as he
:17:51. > :17:56.promised put the bands back in Wigan.
:17:56. > :18:05.From melodious sounds of that brass-band back to the MEN Arena.
:18:05. > :18:10.We can see the crowd starting to pylon.
:18:10. > :18:15.They keep screaming and I keep turning around but nothing seems to
:18:15. > :18:19.be happening. I am joined by the Chief Executive of BBC Children in
:18:20. > :18:23.Need. How much of a coup is this for the north-west and Children in
:18:23. > :18:27.Need? It is great to be able to bring a night like tonight to
:18:27. > :18:31.Manchester. Further 30 years this has been going, we have had
:18:31. > :18:35.incredible support from people on the north-west. We have a galaxy of
:18:35. > :18:43.stars tonight to say thank you and to encourage people to do their own
:18:43. > :18:47.fund-raising. It is important for us to be here. How big and ask
:18:47. > :18:51.visit to get international stars like this? To get them to come away
:18:51. > :18:55.from London and come to Manchester. It has been really important to
:18:55. > :19:01.have had Gary Barlow's support. He has been critical and making it
:19:01. > :19:04.happen. When you say it is Children in Need and it is for the
:19:04. > :19:08.disadvantaged and disabled and the neglected and abused children of
:19:08. > :19:13.the UK, that get people here and that is why everyone is here
:19:13. > :19:19.tonight. I am sure donations will flood into night as well. Tomorrow
:19:19. > :19:25.night as well, the big night. We were both at this Dalal last night
:19:25. > :19:30.and so Terry Wogan went on stage last night. There was a real
:19:30. > :19:36.Northern feel to the whole thing. That is quite unusual. It was
:19:36. > :19:42.important because we're really proud of Children in Need's roots
:19:42. > :19:50.in the heart of communities across England and the UK. People in the
:19:50. > :19:58.auditorium and on BBC won the war watch tonight. You said earlier
:19:59. > :20:03.that Kelly role and was heartbroken by her snub earlier. I am sure he
:20:03. > :20:09.will make a personal apology. think he has ordered the flowers.
:20:09. > :20:12.Enjoy the show tonight and tomorrow, I wish you all the best. We should
:20:12. > :20:22.you a tiny bit of Gary Barlow earlier on. Here is more of that
:20:22. > :20:27.
:20:27. > :20:32.He is the man with the Midas touch. With this huge concert, he hopes he
:20:32. > :20:38.has. I often ask the question myself, who am I to get all these
:20:38. > :20:43.people together? Someone has to do it and we're going to make two or
:20:43. > :20:53.three million pounds tonight. I love it. I love being involved with
:20:53. > :21:01.
:21:01. > :21:07.all the acts. There are a few small names - Lady Gaga. Coldplay.
:21:07. > :21:15.Michael Buble. Elbow. As soon as people hear the words, Children in

:26:18. > :26:23.little more cloud around the Pennines but it will not spoil the
:26:23. > :26:29.day. Even though it is blustery, the wind will come from the south
:26:29. > :26:34.and south-west so towards the middle part of the day, the
:26:34. > :26:39.temperatures will peak at around 13 Celsius. That will feel nice with a
