:00:15. > :00:22.murdered in Southport. We will be live at the scene as the hunt for

:00:22. > :00:32.the wanted man stretches across Europe. Tormented to an early grave.

:00:32. > :00:33.

:00:33. > :00:40.Locals protest against a supermarket development. Why the

:00:40. > :00:45.flowers have been confused by the unusually mild start to winter.

:00:45. > :00:55.am Tony Bennett, and I am performing tonight and I am looking

:00:55. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:03.forward to it. Thanks for looking Police hunting the killer of a

:01:03. > :01:06.mother and daughter in Southport have revealed that the women died

:01:06. > :01:09.at different times. The bodies of Angela Holgate and her mother Alice

:01:09. > :01:11.Huyton were found at Angela's home in Churchtown on Saturday.

:01:11. > :01:14.Detectives also say that Ms Holgate's lodger Barry Morrow was

:01:14. > :01:17.spotted in calai driving her car at the weekend. Our Merseyside

:01:17. > :01:20.reporter Andy Gill is at the murder scene for us. Andy what have the

:01:20. > :01:30.police said about how and when the two women died.

:01:30. > :01:31.

:01:31. > :01:38.-- Calais. What have the police said? Angela Holgate had not been

:01:38. > :01:42.seen here for week. She had been built. Her mother had gone mad see

:01:42. > :01:48.her. The bodies of both women were found at his property on Saturday

:01:48. > :01:54.evening. Angela Holgate, police say, had been dead for longer than her

:01:54. > :01:59.mother. Both women had been asphyxiated. We do not know how.

:01:59. > :02:09.The bodies of both women were found in the same part of the property.

:02:09. > :02:09.

:02:09. > :02:17.There has been a possible sighting of Barry Morrow? Barry Morrow had

:02:17. > :02:24.been the lodger for four years. She -- he had pleaded guilty to

:02:24. > :02:32.assaulting a woman in Southport, but that was neither of the woman

:02:32. > :02:42.he were found here. The last -- the last sighting they have seen have

:02:42. > :02:43.

:02:43. > :02:47.Barry Morrow has been cited in support. Officially, he is the last

:02:47. > :02:51.person who has seen annus and Angela a life. He might have

:02:51. > :02:59.information for the investigation. -- alive. What has been the

:02:59. > :03:06.reaction of people in Southport? This is an active inquiry. Forensic

:03:06. > :03:11.investigation has have been taken out at the property. One neighbour

:03:11. > :03:16.said she was too upset to speak. Many people have been shaken by

:03:16. > :03:22.this double murder. I think it is really frightening. It is something

:03:22. > :03:26.that you never expect. It is a shame. It should not happen. But it

:03:26. > :03:32.has done. It is not something which you would really expect to see in

:03:32. > :03:41.this neighbourhood at all. Police say that Barry Morrow is not a

:03:41. > :03:45.suspect, but is the man who possibly solve the last -- who saw

:03:45. > :03:55.them alive last. He is not returning took -- calls to his

:03:55. > :03:55.

:03:55. > :03:58.mobile phone. Police are liaising with contacts in France and Spain.

:03:58. > :04:02.The mother of a man with learning difficulties - who collapsed and

:04:02. > :04:04.died after being harassed by youths - has told a coroner she has no

:04:04. > :04:07.doubt that his long-suffering torment contributed to his death.

:04:08. > :04:10.David Askew, who was 64, died in March last year outside his home in

:04:10. > :04:13.Hattersley. At an inquest into his death, David's brother Brian said

:04:14. > :04:18.the harassment was so bad the family sometimes had to sit in the

:04:18. > :04:22.dark. Abbie Jones reports. David Askew's family spoke today of

:04:22. > :04:29.almost 30 years of harassment. Some captured on this mobile phone

:04:29. > :04:31.footage. Eggs and tomatoes thrown at their former home in Malandra

:04:31. > :04:36.Crescent. Windows repeatedly smashed. David, they said, was

:04:36. > :04:39.called names like lunatic and pelted with sticks and stones.

:04:39. > :04:42.Youths would follow him, demanding money and cigarettes. His 90-year-

:04:42. > :04:51.old mother, Lizzie, said her son would be in tears. Today she cried

:04:51. > :04:55.at the end of her evidence. On the innate -- of the night David Askew

:04:55. > :04:58.died, used have been shouting abuse at him from the garden below. He

:04:58. > :05:05.was picking up newspaper that had been strewn around the garden

:05:05. > :05:11.outside. His mother said that this torment contributed to David's

:05:11. > :05:13.death. I know in my heart it is true. David's elder brother Brian

:05:13. > :05:17.described living with the harrassment as terrible. It went on,

:05:17. > :05:20.he said, for 29 years, six days a week at nightime. Sometimes he said,

:05:20. > :05:23.they had to sit in the dark. He stayed after his evidence to

:05:23. > :05:26.confront this man, Kial Cottingham. The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to

:05:26. > :05:33.harassing David Askew before he died. Brian today asked him

:05:33. > :05:37.repeatedly, why? Kial Cottingham said I don't know. I joined in with

:05:37. > :05:41.my mates, being in a crowd. I regret doing it in the past. He

:05:41. > :05:44.denied being there the night David died. The coroner John Pollard

:05:44. > :05:46.asked him "You took advantage of a vulnerable person, didn't you? Do

:05:46. > :05:56.you agree it's despicable cowardly behaviour?" Yes, Kial answered. The

:05:56. > :06:02.

:06:02. > :06:05.A Sri Lankan man who was murdered in a shop where he worked in

:06:05. > :06:08.Liverpool has been named as Mahesh Wickramasingha. The 30 year old was

:06:08. > :06:12.stabbed in the neck in a newsagents on Kingsway in Huyton last Tuesday.

:06:12. > :06:15.Police are keen to talk to the drivers of a white Ford Transit Van

:06:15. > :06:17.and a dark coloured Vauxhall Astra that were seen in the area at the

:06:17. > :06:20.time. Former Manchester United midfielder

:06:20. > :06:22.Ronnie Wallwork has been jailed for fifteen months for selling on parts

:06:22. > :06:25.from stolen high-performance cars. The thirty-four year old had his

:06:25. > :06:28.footballing career cut short after nearly losing his life in a bar

:06:28. > :06:35.stabbing four years ago. Since then he set up a legitimate scrapyard

:06:35. > :06:38.business. His lawyer said he had 'succumbed to temptation.'

:06:38. > :06:40.The Trust that runs south Cumbria's hospitals is facing an

:06:40. > :06:42.investigation by the health ombudsman into an incident at

:06:42. > :06:45.Barrow's maternity unit. It follows the revelation that midwives had

:06:45. > :06:49.used an obscenity in the title of an internal email following the

:06:49. > :06:52.death of 9 day old baby Joshua Titcombe three years ago. There is

:06:52. > :07:02.already a police investigation into the deaths of a number of babies

:07:02. > :07:08.

:07:08. > :07:16.Manchester City Council has been condemned in the Commons for axing

:07:16. > :07:26.some school crossing patrols. An MP told the Commons saying -- said the

:07:26. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:39.It is perhaps one of the cruellest illnesses there is. For dementia,

:07:39. > :07:42.there is no cure - it is a slow, progressive and painful illness

:07:42. > :07:44.which slowly robs those who have it of their memories, their

:07:44. > :07:47.personalities and their independence. For those who have it

:07:47. > :07:51.it is deeply distressing. And for those who must watch someone they

:07:51. > :07:54.love slip away - to look the same but not be there - is difficult to

:07:54. > :07:57.describe. All this week we're looking at dementia, talking to the

:07:57. > :07:59.people living with it and alongside it and looking at some of the

:07:59. > :08:01.issues around the illness. Here's our health correspondent Laura

:08:01. > :08:03.Yates. If the reality of this illness is

:08:03. > :08:06.If the reality of this illness is stark so too are the statistics.

:08:06. > :08:09.There are more than 82,000 people here in the North West with some

:08:09. > :08:13.form of dementia. In 10 years that figure is expected to rise to

:08:13. > :08:16.almost 108,000 - an increase of more than 30%. And yet for every 10

:08:16. > :08:24.people who have dementia just 4 are diagnosed and therefore getting the

:08:24. > :08:28.treatment they need. For hospital consultant Peter

:08:28. > :08:31.Dunlop that was the easy part. He was told he had Alzheimer's disease

:08:31. > :08:41.almost three years ago - forgetting things he should have known the

:08:41. > :08:50.

:08:50. > :08:55.That is between 10 and 11 on the little one. The Big One is one, 2,

:08:55. > :08:58.3, 4, 5... It is the most simple of tasks but one Peter finds

:08:59. > :09:08.impossible. He can see the hands of the clock. He knows what they say

:09:08. > :09:12.but not what they mean. 11 o'clock? I have lost it completely. Peter

:09:12. > :09:17.was a consultant obstetrician. When three years ago he started to

:09:17. > :09:22.forget things. Small things but forget things. Small things but

:09:22. > :09:26.things he'd always known. Going to prescribe medication for my

:09:26. > :09:35.patients, and there could not remember the name of the truck. At

:09:35. > :09:38.the same time, everything seemed to go blank. Nothing was there. He was

:09:39. > :09:45.diagnosed with Alzheimers on a friday. He gave up work on the

:09:45. > :09:52.Monday. In a way it was a relief, because I knew something was wrong.

:09:52. > :09:58.It is not nice to know it, but if you know the bees, it is still --

:09:58. > :10:02.easier to deal with it. I use this thing five times a week. For now -

:10:02. > :10:05.the doctor in Peter is doing all he can to slow down the progression of

:10:05. > :10:10.his disease. He's taking a drug called aricept - and exercising his

:10:10. > :10:13.body and brain as much as he can. Can you remember what that was

:10:13. > :10:17.about? I have forgotten. And yet remembering even the smallest

:10:18. > :10:24.things is becoming more difficult. It's Peter's wife who now makes his

:10:24. > :10:33.appointments for him - and reminds him of them too. Are you fearful

:10:33. > :10:39.about your future? Yes. It is the long-term complete loss of control

:10:39. > :10:47.but worries me. OK, that may be some time down the road, but when

:10:47. > :10:53.you cannot do anything, I think that is very demeaning. It is very

:10:53. > :11:03.hard for anyone who is caring for you. It is distressing for them as

:11:03. > :11:09.

:11:09. > :11:13.Tomorrow night we'll hear from Rose and Doug. Doug has Alzheimers. Rose

:11:13. > :11:20.- his wife of more than 35 years is his carer and for one week she's

:11:20. > :11:23.been keeping a video diary for us - always we want to hear from you -

:11:23. > :11:27.and your experiences of dementia. Please do get in touch with us -

:11:27. > :11:29.either on email, via our facebook page or twitter account - please do

:11:29. > :11:32.tell us your stories. There wasn't much to see in the

:11:32. > :11:35.shop windows of one Lancashire town today. The windows had been blacked

:11:35. > :11:38.out in protest at plans to build a Tesco on the outskirts of

:11:38. > :11:41.Barnoldswick. The shop keepers said they wanted to show what their town

:11:41. > :11:44.centre would be like if the supermarket plan is approved. Tesco

:11:44. > :11:48.insist their store would create jobs and bring prosperity to the

:11:48. > :11:51.area, as our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, explains.

:11:51. > :12:01.It's a traditional town centre with butchers and bakers - though

:12:01. > :12:05.candlestick makers are in short supply. Lots of people come from

:12:05. > :12:14.our way. They think it is lovely, all these shops. The town square,

:12:14. > :12:21.we have lots of things on it. It is just nice. But today, shops are

:12:21. > :12:29.blacking out their windows. Protest at Tesco arriving. It is not good

:12:29. > :12:39.news here. We asked for -- full of passionate local businesses. We are

:12:39. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:42.fearful of losing all about trade. The shop keepers said they wanted

:12:42. > :12:46.to show how they believe the town centre will look if Tesco are

:12:46. > :12:51.allowed to build their store. Tesco allowed to build their store. Tesco

:12:51. > :12:57.a point out that the -- they would be 175 jobs created. It would

:12:57. > :13:05.inject 26 million in the local economy. They claim a survey of 400

:13:05. > :13:11.people say that only 19 % opposed people say that only 19 % opposed

:13:11. > :13:17.their plan. But finding people in favour today has been difficult.

:13:17. > :13:24.think it is too large a supermarket, I think it will destroy the town

:13:24. > :13:26.centre. Neston in Wirral went through similar debates when

:13:26. > :13:29.Sainsbury's announced plans to build a big store there some time

:13:29. > :13:35.back. The store's now up and running. The Sainsbury's opened in

:13:35. > :13:38.Neston last year. Overall, it does not have increased the trade in the

:13:38. > :13:42.town centre has muttered as it would have liked to have seen. But

:13:42. > :13:50.it has not decimated the town centre as badly as some would have

:13:50. > :14:00.feared. Back in Barnoldswick the shopkeepers say they maintain their

:14:00. > :14:02.

:14:02. > :14:05.Not the first term or the last time to go through that.

:14:05. > :14:12.99 years after it began, the Royal Variety Show arrived in Salford

:14:12. > :14:15.today. The gala performance is being held at the Lowry Theatre in

:14:15. > :14:19.front of the Princess Royal. Unless you've got a ticket, you

:14:19. > :14:22.will not be able to see the show until it is shown on TV next week,

:14:22. > :14:26.but our reporter Kate Simms has spent the day star spotting at the

:14:26. > :14:30.theatre from where she joins us now. It looks a bit wet there.

:14:30. > :14:40.It has actually stopped raining, it must know that royalty is on the

:14:40. > :14:46.way. I have seen some fabulous dresses going in. Once all the

:14:46. > :14:55.guests are seated, the Guest of Honour are -- the guest of honour,

:14:55. > :14:58.the Princess Royal will arrive at. This is as far as we can get for

:14:58. > :15:03.now because security is very tight here, obviously, but I did have

:15:03. > :15:07.more luck when I had a nose around here earlier today.

:15:07. > :15:15.Lights. Camera. Hail. But the weather could not stop the stars

:15:15. > :15:24.descending on Salford today. I have played a smaller theatres. But this

:15:24. > :15:28.is a big event. I love the people here, but I do not like the weather.

:15:28. > :15:35.Davy Jones of the monkeys was born here. That is all I know about

:15:35. > :15:38.Manchester. Salford as a different city?

:15:38. > :15:47.At least one of them had some local knowledge. Jason Manford was born

:15:47. > :15:53.here. I said Barry Manilow up to Bolton Road. We went there with his

:15:53. > :15:58.entourage. We had access to some stars, but

:15:58. > :16:01.security at the Lowry was tight and there was strictly no access

:16:01. > :16:07.backstage. And they achillea the rehearsals

:16:07. > :16:11.for the finale. It was an exciting day, too, for

:16:11. > :16:17.the Lowry catering team. I have been taking things into the

:16:17. > :16:25.dressing rooms. While one college's economics trip

:16:25. > :16:34.got slightly diverted. We are looking out for Nicole Scherzinger.

:16:34. > :16:42.The stars are having a well-earned rest. I was going to go out in

:16:42. > :16:46.front, hands in front, and go like that. The it is pretty good.

:16:46. > :16:54.think I just go like that. Let's hope the Princess Royal is

:16:54. > :17:01.impressed. I have had a wonderful day. All at the stars are

:17:01. > :17:06.considered professionals. The guests are late, and Princess Anne

:17:06. > :17:11.has not arrived yet. But when she does get here, she will have all

:17:11. > :17:13.wonderful evening. Other stars here are Leona Lewis,

:17:13. > :17:17.Britain's Got Talent winner Jai McDowell, Barry Manilow, Il Divo,

:17:17. > :17:21.Hayley Westenra - the list goes on. You will have to wait till it is

:17:21. > :17:24.broadcast next week and at least you will be dry and warm - unlike

:17:24. > :17:34.How exciting. Imagine being on a school trip and you bump into Tony

:17:34. > :17:35.

:17:35. > :17:39.Bennett. They may not have known who he was!

:17:39. > :17:41.Sport now and, Richard, 64 teams in the third round of the FA Cup, and

:17:41. > :17:45.somehow the draw conspired to pit Manchester City against Manchester

:17:45. > :17:50.United? Yes, the fans just can't wait for

:17:50. > :17:57.this one. It's the first time in more than 50 years that United have

:17:57. > :18:00.played an FA Cup match at City's ground. And it's the first

:18:00. > :18:03.opportunity for Sir Alex Ferguson to get revenge for that 6-1

:18:03. > :18:06.humiliation inflicted on his side by City in October and, of course,

:18:06. > :18:12.the 1-0 defeat to Roberto Mancini's team in last season's FA Cup semi-

:18:12. > :18:15.final. And of course, there are some other

:18:15. > :18:18.intriguing ties involving our local sides?

:18:18. > :18:21.Yes, Annabel, little Fleetwood Town, currently second in the Blue Square

:18:21. > :18:31.Premier League, will get a money- spinning match against nearby

:18:31. > :18:37.

:18:37. > :18:40.Blackpool if they can beat Yeovil Macclesfield will play Bolton

:18:40. > :18:44.Wanderers at the Moss Rose if they can overcome Chelmsford, while

:18:44. > :18:47.Everton entertain non-league Tamworth. You'll remember the

:18:47. > :18:50.Tamworth Two, well, the Staffordshire town is hoping it can

:18:50. > :19:00.now become more famous for an FA Cup giant-killing than it was for

:19:00. > :19:00.

:19:00. > :19:03.its escaped pigs! Things you'd never that you would say at the

:19:03. > :19:06.sports desk. That might be David v Goliath, but

:19:06. > :19:10.City-United is a real clash of the Titans. Rio Ferdinand tweeted today

:19:10. > :19:12.that he can't wait for the match. And as I found out in Manchester

:19:12. > :19:21.today, the anticipation among supporters is intense.

:19:21. > :19:30.64 balls. Just two clubs from Manchester. Surely not. Manchester

:19:30. > :19:34.City. A out of all them balls, he picks Manchester United. Against

:19:34. > :19:41.Manchester United. I could not believe it. It should have been the

:19:41. > :19:44.final. And with last season's semi final

:19:44. > :19:48.win for City and that 6-1 drubbing at Old Trafford fresh in the memory,

:19:48. > :19:53.United want revenge. Bring it on. The nerve-wracking. That is a tough

:19:53. > :19:56.one, but we have got a big revenge match.

:19:56. > :19:59.The latest part of an increasingly fierce rivalry for the Premier

:19:59. > :20:06.League's top two. City are still 5 points clear after

:20:06. > :20:11.smashing 5 goals past Norwich. United stubbornly refusing to be

:20:11. > :20:20.shouldered aside. Phil Jones' first goal in a United

:20:20. > :20:25.shirt was enough to get the better of Villa.

:20:25. > :20:28.United will hope to close the gap. In their next three matches, the

:20:29. > :20:32.blues have tough fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal and Stoke.

:20:32. > :20:35.The reds' games are against a trio in the bottom half of the table -

:20:35. > :20:42.Wolves, QPR and Fulham. Fed be get someone that is going to take over

:20:42. > :20:52.from us, that is when they will start playing. There were arm has

:20:52. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :21:02.turned, and we are in the ascendancy. AC Milan at they say

:21:02. > :21:06.that Manchester City have given them permission to talk to Tevez.

:21:06. > :21:09.Liverpool could go as high as fifth in the Premier League if they win

:21:09. > :21:13.at Fulham tonight. Kenny Dalglish's side will be without Lucas who is

:21:13. > :21:17.out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

:21:17. > :21:20.At the other end of the table, the big story is that the Yak is back.

:21:20. > :21:23.The former Everton striker hit four for his new side Blackburn Rovers

:21:23. > :21:27.as they beat Swansea. But did that assuage the anger of the fans who

:21:27. > :21:30.want Steve Kean sacked as manager? Not a bit of it. Despite the 4-2

:21:30. > :21:34.win, they still called for him to go. Here's Ian Haslam. Winning has

:21:34. > :21:44.been a rarity for Blackburn, but criticism of for Steve Kean has

:21:44. > :21:54.
