:00:12. > :00:14.Good evening. Police in Salford have appealed to the community to

:00:14. > :00:18.help solve the murder of a university student who was shot

:00:18. > :00:22.dead early this morning. The 23 year-old had been visiting the area

:00:22. > :00:29.for the festive season. Detectives say he was killed in an unprovoked

:00:29. > :00:33.attack. Naomi Cornwell is at Swinton Police Station.

:00:33. > :00:37.What more do we know about the victim?

:00:37. > :00:41.Police haven't named the date and yet, but we know that he was 23

:00:41. > :00:44.years old and from India. We believe he was studying at

:00:44. > :00:51.Lancaster University. He had been on a short break to the Manchester

:00:51. > :00:55.area, staying in a hotel nearby. Him and a group of Indian students

:00:55. > :00:59.were walking along the lane behind me when they were approached by two

:00:59. > :01:04.men who were on the other side of the road. There was no argument,

:01:04. > :01:09.say the police, only a few words were exchanged between the groups.

:01:09. > :01:13.But one of the men pulled out a handgun and shot the man at close

:01:13. > :01:19.range. What have the police said about the killer? They described

:01:19. > :01:22.the gunman as being white, in his mid-twenties and of slim build,

:01:22. > :01:28.wearing a great Cup. The man with him was more heavily built and

:01:28. > :01:32.wearing a black jacket. I need them to come forward and so render

:01:32. > :01:37.themselves to justice. We will find them, I am particularly interested

:01:37. > :01:40.in the man who was with him. He should come forward and say what is

:01:40. > :01:46.going on. They are obviously extremely violent and the sooner we

:01:46. > :01:49.bring them to justice, the better. Police say there is no indication

:01:49. > :01:54.that this was a racially motivated attack, that they had no indication

:01:54. > :01:56.of any motive at the moment. They have said they will be stepping up

:01:56. > :01:59.patrols in the area in the next few days.

:01:59. > :02:02.Thank you. A man's being questioned by police

:02:02. > :02:04.after a house was badly damaged by fire and explosion at Huyton on

:02:04. > :02:07.Merseyside yesterday. Nearby homes were evacuated after the blast

:02:07. > :02:12.early on Christmas morning. The man who was arrested is in hospital

:02:12. > :02:15.with burns. No-one else was hurt. A search is continuing for an 84-

:02:15. > :02:17.year-old woman who disappeared from her home in Cheshire over Christmas.

:02:17. > :02:27.Magdalana Whittaker, who's said to be very hard-of-hearing, was

:02:27. > :02:30.

:02:30. > :02:33.reported missing by a friend in Congleton on Christmas Eve.

:02:33. > :02:36.Thousands of people went to the Boxing Day sales in the North West,

:02:36. > :02:39.in the hope of grabbing a bargain, some queuing from the early hours

:02:39. > :02:41.of this morning. 120,000 were expected through the doors of both

:02:42. > :02:48.the Trafford Centre and Liverpool One shopping centre today. I came

:02:49. > :02:54.here at 4am. I came at 5:30am. It was worth it, I got a few bargains.

:02:55. > :02:57.Digby percent of everything, I was pleased. -- 50 %.

:02:58. > :03:00.Football, and Manchester United had an emphatic 5-0 win over Wigan at

:03:01. > :03:03.Old Trafford, but Manchester City remain top of the premier league on

:03:03. > :03:07.goal difference, after a goal-less draw at West Brom. Liverpool were

:03:07. > :03:16.held to a 1-1 draw by Blackburn whilst Bolton lost 2-0 at home to

:03:16. > :03:22.Newcastle. Everton and Sunderland Tranmere's game was called off

:03:22. > :03:30.after strong winds blew off the roof at the park. There is no date

:03:30. > :03:33.It has been windy this afternoon with doubled figure temperatures.

:03:33. > :03:38.We will hang on to them for one more day and then for the rest of

:03:38. > :03:43.the week, they will dip down to single figures and the winds will

:03:43. > :03:49.pick up. This evening will remain fairly windy. That will remain

:03:49. > :03:53.until the early period. Rain will drop in by dawn. A mild night.

:03:53. > :03:58.Temperatures still holding on to high single figures. Tomorrow looks

:03:58. > :04:01.like another mild date. A damp start across Cumbria, Lancashire

:04:01. > :04:07.and the Isle of Man. The rain will ease away by the afternoon.

:04:07. > :04:11.Elsewhere, breaks in the cloud allowing some bright spells to come

:04:11. > :04:16.through. Breezy, hopefully less windy in many places, and then for
