:00:01. > :00:11.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Ranvir Singh and Roger

:00:11. > :00:12.

:00:13. > :00:16.Johnson. Our top story... Back in court - the gunman accused

:00:16. > :00:18.of shooting a student in a Boxing Day attack. We will hear from a

:00:18. > :00:21.community left shocked and ashamed. Also tonight...

:00:21. > :00:24.Battered by gale force winds. Plane passengers were among those forced

:00:24. > :00:28.to endure a bumpy ride today. The rising cost of rail - commuters

:00:28. > :00:31.face an unhappy new year with a 6% price hike.

:00:31. > :00:37.Why are our train fares a lot higher than anywhere else in

:00:38. > :00:41.Europe? And who's a clever boy then? We

:00:41. > :00:51.will tell you how a pet parrot helped save a litter of newborn

:00:51. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :01:02.Most of us have been blown off our feet today getting abouT, and it

:01:03. > :01:07.isn't over yet. Dianne is here with the latest details. I am afraid the

:01:07. > :01:15.weather is not settling down for the next 24 hours. Through the day,

:01:15. > :01:23.the wind has been gusting up to 67 mph in Crosby on Merseyside. The

:01:23. > :01:26.conditions don't change much over the next day or so. The Met Office

:01:26. > :01:29.have issued a yellow warning, it will continue to be strong all

:01:29. > :01:33.through tonight, and for some parts it will be strong through the day

:01:33. > :01:36.tomorrow, as well. Tomorrow it will be windy, there will be gales at

:01:36. > :01:37.times, but we will also have more rain. More details later in the

:01:38. > :01:47.programme. At Happy New Year to you, too.

:01:48. > :01:50.

:01:50. > :01:54.Thank you very much. The family of an Indian student

:01:54. > :01:56.shot dead in Salford last week are on their way to Manchester. They

:01:56. > :02:00.hope to visit the scene of the crime tomorrow.

:02:00. > :02:02.Anuj Bidve died in Ordsall on Boxing Day. A man accused of his

:02:02. > :02:05.murder has made a second court appearance this afternoon. The

:02:05. > :02:07.police and council leaders have agreed to meet concerned residents

:02:07. > :02:10.in Ordsall later this week. Stuart Flinders reports.

:02:10. > :02:12.This is the man accused of Anuj Bidve's murder. In court yesterday

:02:12. > :02:15.he identified himself as Psycho Stapleton. He is, in fact, Kiaran

:02:15. > :02:18.Stapleton, a 20-year-old from Ordsall. A police car has been

:02:18. > :02:21.parked throughout the day at the place where Mr Bidve was shot dead.

:02:21. > :02:25.In the early hours of Boxing Day he was walking through Ordsall with

:02:25. > :02:29.friends when he was attacked. He was in the North West to study at

:02:29. > :02:32.Lancaster University. His family is expected to arrive in Manchester

:02:32. > :02:38.tomorrow after meeting officers from Greater Manchester Police at

:02:38. > :02:42.their home in India. We met with Anuj Bidve's family

:02:42. > :02:46.last night for several others and were able to fill in some of the

:02:46. > :02:48.gaps in the understanding of the events that leads to this tragic

:02:48. > :02:51.loss. A provisional trial date for Kiaran

:02:51. > :02:59.Stapleton, who was remanded in custody at a second hearing today,

:02:59. > :03:03.has been set for June. Only when that to judicial process

:03:03. > :03:07.is completed will be Noel who killed Anuj Bidve and wide, but

:03:07. > :03:11.does the crime tell us something about Salford? This is the centre

:03:11. > :03:16.of Ordsall. The crime scene is about a quarter of a mile in that

:03:16. > :03:22.direction, and the same direction - - distance in this direction is

:03:22. > :03:25.Media City, where the BBC is making TV programmes. Which is the real

:03:25. > :03:28.Salford? A service was held last night to

:03:28. > :03:30.show that most local people are decent. They are so concerned about

:03:30. > :03:33.what is happened they have organised a meeting with the police

:03:33. > :03:39.and local councillors for Thursday. And they insist their area is

:03:39. > :03:45.improving. We have been living here since 2005

:03:45. > :03:51.in April or May, and I do like living here, honestly. When we look

:03:51. > :03:53.-- lived here it looked more rough than now.

:03:53. > :03:57.It has got better? Much better.

:03:57. > :04:00.But the leader of the city coundil knows the killing is a blow to

:04:00. > :04:04.Salford's reputation. This crime, unfortunately, has

:04:04. > :04:08.highlighted Salford. We need to do what we can do, which is to show

:04:08. > :04:11.that community at its best, and that is what I think has happened

:04:11. > :04:20.over the last few days. Mr Bidve's family is hoping to see

:04:20. > :04:23.where he died on Thursday before Smashed roofs, fallen trees and

:04:23. > :04:27.closed roads - heavy winds gusting to over 70 mph have caused problems

:04:27. > :04:30.across the region today. Country estates have also closed their

:04:30. > :04:33.grounds to visitors, and one family in Lancashire had a lucky escape

:04:33. > :04:43.after part of a neighbouring house fell on their home. Our reporter

:04:43. > :04:44.

:04:44. > :04:48.Abbie Jones has been taking a look Boarding up in Blackburn. Windows

:04:48. > :04:51.were smashed and the roof of this house damaged after it was hit by

:04:51. > :04:55.part of a neighbour's extension which blew off in high winds.

:04:55. > :05:00.There was a crash into the side of the House, Bow House felt as if it

:05:00. > :05:05.actually moved. I went to check, didn't realise the roof had come

:05:05. > :05:15.off. The roof of St Helens new Rugby

:05:15. > :05:16.

:05:16. > :05:19.League stadium was also ripped off. The side are due to play their

:05:19. > :05:22.first match in less than three weeks. The strong winds caused

:05:22. > :05:25.heachaches for pilots at Manchester Airport. Planes buffeted by the

:05:25. > :05:28.wind struggled to land and one had to abort. The weather also forced

:05:28. > :05:30.the closure of the Wood Head pass, which links Manchester to Sheffield.

:05:30. > :05:34.And Dunham Massey's grounds, in Altrincham, along with Quarry Bank

:05:34. > :05:37.Mill in Styal and Lyme Park in Stockport. And this is what those

:05:37. > :05:47.winds sounded like. They caused the Beetham Tower in Manchester to hum

:05:47. > :05:49.

:05:49. > :05:53.loudly this morning. Dust speed trap over 73 mph

:05:53. > :05:57.according to data collected here at the Meteorological Agency here in

:05:57. > :06:03.Manchester. The winds continued right into the afternoon and got

:06:03. > :06:07.even stronger. They have been around 45 mph, which

:06:07. > :06:11.is significant, not record-breaking, but it continues this pattern of

:06:11. > :06:15.windy weather we have had for around six weeks now. There doesn't

:06:15. > :06:19.seem to be any end in sight. There were also flood warnings on

:06:19. > :06:23.the M6 today. Rivers in Tebay, Levens and Millonthorpe in Cumbria

:06:23. > :06:25.were swollen. And were high water levels the reason this little chap

:06:25. > :06:35.was stranded on the Mersey in Latchford? He eventually made it

:06:35. > :06:38.

:06:38. > :06:41.back into the water after five We saw there, strong winds

:06:41. > :06:49.battering the north-west coast line, but there is a question about

:06:49. > :06:53.whether our sea defences are strong enough to protect coastal areas.

:06:53. > :06:54.Councillors on the Fylde coast say no. They are campaigning for a 100

:06:54. > :06:59.million upgrade of the sea defences there.

:06:59. > :07:05.It is on days like this you can appreciate the awesome ferocity of

:07:05. > :07:10.the sea. It is on days such as this you can also appreciate the need

:07:10. > :07:13.for sea defences. Some say the defences on this

:07:13. > :07:18.stretch of the course are not robust enough.

:07:18. > :07:23.The fear is this coastline will erode, these people's houses and

:07:23. > :07:26.businesses will be drastically affected.

:07:26. > :07:35.Blackpool and wire borough councils are asking for improvements to the

:07:35. > :07:39.sea defences along a 1.9, to stretch of the coast. The sea wall

:07:39. > :07:47.at cross salt may seem stout enough, but experts say this wall is only

:07:48. > :07:53.good for another five years or so. After that, the homes it currently

:07:53. > :07:57.protects could be in danger. Living straight across from the sea

:07:58. > :08:01.defence is very concerning. How often do you see the tide

:08:01. > :08:05.coming over? It is particularly bad at this time

:08:05. > :08:09.of the year with high winds, and the road has been blocked quite a

:08:09. > :08:13.lot of this week. The Environment Agency's Regional

:08:13. > :08:17.Flood and coastal committee is due to meet in March to consider this

:08:17. > :08:21.and a number of other pending schemes. It will then decide

:08:21. > :08:31.whether to allocate funding to this scheme this year or whether it will

:08:31. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:34.A man has been charged with setting fire to BBC Radio Manchester's

:08:34. > :08:39.radio car during the riots last summer. The car was burned out as

:08:39. > :08:43.rioters attacked Salford Precinct and looted shops on August 9th. Zac

:08:43. > :08:49.Challoner, 23, also faces charges of violent disorder and burglary.

:08:49. > :08:52.He has been remanded in custody. The family of a 20-year-old man

:08:52. > :08:58.murdered in Liverpool have launched a fresh appeal for information on

:08:58. > :09:00.the first anniversary of his death. Eddie Pybis was shot while in the

:09:00. > :09:06.passenger seat of a silver Volvo that was travelling along Utting

:09:06. > :09:08.Avenue in Anfield. In a statement his family say their lives have

:09:08. > :09:12.been turned upside down. Seven men arrested on suspicion of murder

:09:12. > :09:16.have been bailed pending further enquiries.

:09:16. > :09:20.We had a good response, initially, at the commencement of the

:09:20. > :09:30.investigation, and I am sure there are people out there who will no

:09:30. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:36.what has gone on in this investigation.

:09:36. > :09:39.A Manchester woman who died from gallstones six years ago was

:09:39. > :09:41.discriminated against, according to a report by the Health Service

:09:41. > :09:44.Ombudsman. Doctors assumed that Carole Foster, who was 52, needed

:09:44. > :09:46.psychiatric treatment because of her medical history. The report

:09:46. > :09:50.said the Pennine Acute Hospital Trust and the Pennine Care NHS

:09:50. > :09:51.Foundation Trust failed to meet her needs and her death could have been

:09:51. > :09:55.avoided. A five foot crocodile is among

:09:55. > :09:58.dozens of reptiles that have been stolen from a pet shop in Stockport.

:09:58. > :10:03.As well as the crocodile - pictured here - snakes and lizards were

:10:03. > :10:06.taken from the Stockport Pet Warehouse in Heaviley last night.

:10:06. > :10:16.Experts are warning they can be extremely dangerous in the wrong

:10:16. > :10:28.

:10:28. > :10:32.Rail passengers have reacted angrily to the latest fares

:10:32. > :10:35.increase which has seen some ticket prices in the North West go up by

:10:35. > :10:37.more than 10%. The train companies say the higher prices will help pay

:10:37. > :10:38.for much-needed improvements, like electrification and more carriages.

:10:38. > :10:41.Our Transport Correspondent, Colin Sykes, reports.

:10:41. > :10:44.Trains have never been more popular. But with the current squeeze on

:10:44. > :10:45.family finances, an average increase of 5.9% has gone down

:10:45. > :10:50.badly. I think if the Government should

:10:50. > :10:55.subsidise them better than they do. The train companies are romping up

:10:55. > :11:04.fears for higher profits, it is as simple as that.

:11:04. > :11:08.It seems like an awful lot to me. If they had adjusted for inflation

:11:08. > :11:18.of wages, except a, it would have been more reasonable. I can

:11:18. > :11:18.

:11:18. > :11:23.understand why people are angry. All will the average increase is

:11:23. > :11:33.around 6%, there are regional variations. A ticket from Crewe is

:11:33. > :11:40.

:11:40. > :11:44.going up by 10 %. That is an Passenger numbers are going up,

:11:44. > :11:50.more people are using the railways, there is more money coming in. The

:11:50. > :11:53.railways must do their part and become more efficient.

:11:53. > :11:57.Improvements are on the way with more electrification and more

:11:57. > :12:01.carriages. But can passengers be expected to pay more of the bill?

:12:01. > :12:05.Ultimately the cost of the railways will reduce, and that will reduce

:12:05. > :12:08.not only the burden to the taxpayer, but hopefully the burden to the

:12:08. > :12:12.rail user. In the past, higher fares might

:12:12. > :12:18.have pushed some passengers back into their cars. But, with rising

:12:18. > :12:22.fuel costs, that is no longer an option for many.

:12:22. > :12:25.Earlier in the day we asked if you were feeling the effects of the

:12:25. > :12:28.fare rises - and James de Wolf got onto facebook straightaway to say

:12:28. > :12:30."On the train to work now from Barrow-in-Furness and being charged

:12:30. > :12:40.20% more per day, equating to 20% more per day, equating to

:12:40. > :12:47.

:12:47. > :12:57.around 40 per month extra." Nicholas Bacon writes...

:12:57. > :13:03.

:13:03. > :13:13.Claire Miller has another stark example and says...

:13:13. > :13:31.

:13:31. > :13:35.Stu Taylor's trying to take it on This is a common complaint, people

:13:35. > :13:39.can't see the investment. Exactly, these things take a long

:13:39. > :13:43.time. A point made frequently is that people object to rail

:13:43. > :13:47.companies making money, but this is part of the privatisation deal,

:13:47. > :13:50.they have to make money to be successful. The odd image is about

:13:50. > :13:54.how much of that money they put how much of that money they put

:13:54. > :13:58.back into the rail service. There are plenty more, people have

:13:58. > :14:01.also said, at least we knew about the training crease that, we did

:14:01. > :14:06.not know about the bus ticket increases.

:14:06. > :14:09.One piece of good news is that a lot of people on the trains were at

:14:09. > :14:15.able to buy -- were able to book an advance on the internet.

:14:15. > :14:24.Yes, they were cushioned a little. Thank you very much for all your

:14:24. > :14:26.responses. Still to come on North West

:14:26. > :14:29.Tonight... The brains behind the brawn - the

:14:29. > :14:32.sports scientist helping our Olympic stars go for gold in London.

:14:32. > :14:42.And sitting pretty - how a pet parrot helped save a litter of

:14:42. > :14:44.

:14:44. > :14:47.The football world started the year mourning one of its own. Former

:14:47. > :14:52.Liverpool and Everton defender Gary Ablett died on New years day. He

:14:52. > :14:55.had been suffering from the cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

:14:55. > :14:58.But while he will be remembered by most as a brilliant footballer, he

:14:58. > :15:05.was also a man who, like so many, fought cancer bravely and with

:15:05. > :15:12.dignity. As a player and a manager, Gary

:15:12. > :15:17.Ablett was respected and admired. One he was brilliant, a brilliant

:15:17. > :15:20.player, Liverpool should never have sold him. It is just tragic, a

:15:20. > :15:23.tragic loss and he will be sadly missed, he really will.

:15:23. > :15:28.But Kenny Mayall didn't know who Gary Ablett was when they met at

:15:28. > :15:33.the Christie two months ago. To him he was simply a patient battling

:15:33. > :15:39.cancer like him. Just to have someone to tattoo on a

:15:39. > :15:44.day-to-day basis, he was not able to walk very well, and I was quite

:15:44. > :15:48.able to book on the days I was not booked up. To sit there and have a

:15:48. > :15:52.nice conversation with someone really brings a pure spirits.

:15:52. > :16:01.Gary and Kenny became friends. They shared a curry, Gary even got him

:16:01. > :16:05.signed football shirts to help with One of the two last e-mails I got

:16:05. > :16:10.from him he said he had control of his diabetes. I thought he was

:16:10. > :16:13.getting better, so to hear he had died was a total shock.

:16:13. > :16:16.But Gary's case is far from isolated. It is actually the fifth

:16:17. > :16:23.most common cancer in the UK. It attacks the lymph tissues in the

:16:23. > :16:27.body and research shows its incidence is slightly higher in men.

:16:27. > :16:30.Some patients can be treated successfully, but others are very

:16:30. > :16:35.resistant to treatment, conventional chemotherapy and

:16:35. > :16:39.radiotherapy, even stem cell transplants, and it appears in this

:16:40. > :16:47.case that Gary Ablett, sadly, had an aggressive form of the lead node

:16:47. > :16:50.cancer. -- lymph node. As fans in Liverpool

:16:50. > :16:58.today signed a condolence book to Gary Ablett the footballer, Kenny

:16:58. > :17:00.Mayall simply been remembering a man that cancer made a friend.

:17:01. > :17:03.Following that news both sets of players will be wearing black

:17:03. > :17:06.armbands as a tribute to Gary tonight. Liverpool will also be

:17:06. > :17:16.holding a minute's silence before their FA Cup tie against Oldham at

:17:16. > :17:18.

:17:18. > :17:28.Anfield on Friday. The festive period has been a topsy-turvy one

:17:28. > :17:31.

:17:31. > :17:37.in football's Premier League. Man City lost at Sunderland. Blackburn

:17:37. > :17:42.won at Man United. Liverpool have had a better time of

:17:42. > :17:46.it, four points out of six, and Steven Gerrard is back and fit.

:17:46. > :17:51.Before we look ahead to tonight, let's catch up on how teams did

:17:51. > :17:56.yesterday. There was more doom and gloom for

:17:57. > :18:06.Rovers, a bracing win for Blackpool and Stanley have gone nine games

:18:07. > :18:08.

:18:08. > :18:12.birthday Steve Kean was reaching for the fizz himself after

:18:12. > :18:14.Blackburn came back down to earth with a bump losing at home to Stoke.

:18:14. > :18:17.After stunning Old Trafford and frustrating Liverpool at Anfield

:18:17. > :18:19.over Christmas, a win could have taken Rovers out of the bottom

:18:19. > :18:22.three, but despite David Goodwillie's scrambled strike they

:18:22. > :18:24.went down 2-1 and stay second bottom. Better news in the

:18:24. > :18:27.Championship. Blackpool under Ian Holloway are aiming to get back

:18:27. > :18:30.into the Premier League at the first attempt. A comfortable 3-0

:18:30. > :18:35.win over Middlesborough moved the Seasiders to within a point of the

:18:35. > :18:39.play-off places. In League One, 2012 continued where the old year

:18:39. > :18:43.finished off for Bury. The Shakers followed up a victory on Boxing Day

:18:43. > :18:47.with a 2-1 win over Walsall. This Peter Sweeney free-kick being a

:18:47. > :18:54.great early shout for goal of the month. It helped his team move up

:18:54. > :18:56.to ninth. A couple of local derbies to finish off in League Two.

:18:56. > :19:01.Accrington Stanley pummelled Macclesfield with Andy Proctor

:19:01. > :19:11.completing a 4-0 drubbing. And Morecambe got back to winning ways

:19:11. > :19:12.

:19:12. > :19:16.with this Kevin Ellison effort at It is fair to the fizz has gone a

:19:16. > :19:19.bit flat on Roberto Mancini's New Year so far. He is not happy that

:19:19. > :19:22.City are playing their second game in 48 hours after the New Year's

:19:22. > :19:27.Day defeat at Sunderland. But a win tonight would restore a three point

:19:27. > :19:35.lead over United who play at Newcastle tomorrow. If Liverpool

:19:35. > :19:38.win, they are right back in the mix for a Champions' League spot. Wigan

:19:38. > :19:42.need to beat Sunderland tonight to move out of the bottom three.

:19:42. > :19:47.We have had it confirmed in the last few minutes that the FA have

:19:47. > :19:51.told us that Liverpool will not be appealing against Luis Suarez's

:19:51. > :19:56.eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

:19:56. > :20:03.We will have the best of the action from City, Liverpool and Wigan's

:20:03. > :20:06.game against Sunderland. Now for the first in a week of

:20:06. > :20:09.special reports about the impact of sports science in the region. You

:20:09. > :20:11.might think it is just for top Olympic athletes and Premier League

:20:11. > :20:14.footballers, but the science has also helped celebrities, thanks to

:20:14. > :20:17.a professor in Liverpool. All of us could do with it after

:20:17. > :20:20.Christmas, as well. Greg Whyte, who is based at John
