:00:01. > :00:04.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson and

:00:04. > :00:08.Ranvir Singh. Our top story: Retracing his

:00:08. > :00:16.footsteps. The parents of the student shot dead on Boxing day lay

:00:16. > :00:22.flowers where he died. We'd just would like to see the

:00:22. > :00:25.things where he was shot, and those memories we will keep in our mind

:00:25. > :00:29.throughout our life. We'll be hearing more from Anuj

:00:29. > :00:31.Bidve's parents. We've also got a exclusive interview with one of the

:00:31. > :00:34.people closest to the man accused of his murder.

:00:34. > :00:37.Also tonight: Claims police withheld a Wirral woman's diary

:00:37. > :00:40.from evidence. Her husband, who served time for her murder, says

:00:40. > :00:47.he's appalled. Who's the man in the hat? Amir Khan

:00:47. > :00:52.raises more questions over the judges at his world title fight.

:00:52. > :00:55.I just want to know what this man is, what his role was, why he was

:00:55. > :00:58.sat there? A Titanic calling. The enthusiasts

:00:58. > :01:02.who're hoping to recreated the great liner's radio room, to mark

:01:02. > :01:12.the centenary of her sinking. And, the A-list guest list. Why one

:01:12. > :01:17.couple's big day had an unexpected Hollywood gate-crasher.

:01:17. > :01:20.It was so lovely, the whole of the cast was there. Meryl Streep

:01:20. > :01:30.dressed as Margaret Thatcher. They were all applauding as I was

:01:30. > :01:33.

:01:33. > :01:36.They travelled thousands of miles to retrace their son's final

:01:36. > :01:40.footsteps, and to bring his body home. The parents of Anuj Bidve,

:01:40. > :01:44.who was shot dead on Boxing Day morning, came to Salford today to

:01:44. > :01:47.say prayers at the spot where he died. They also spoke to the Prime

:01:47. > :01:50.Minister, who told them the British authorities would do everything

:01:50. > :01:53.possible to catch and punish his killer. Tonight, one of the people

:01:53. > :02:03.closest to the man charged with murder has spoken exclusively to

:02:03. > :02:05.

:02:05. > :02:10.North West Tonight. Let's go live to Stuart Flinders in Ordsall.

:02:10. > :02:14.We don't know a lot about Kiaran Stapleton accused of the murder,

:02:14. > :02:21.because of the ongoing legal proceedings. I've been talking to

:02:21. > :02:24.Kiaran Stapleton's cousin. But today was really a chance for Mr

:02:25. > :02:28.Bidve's family to try and make some sense of what happened to their son.

:02:28. > :02:31.They travelled nearly 5,000 miles, but this was the most painful part

:02:31. > :02:39.of their journey. Anuj Bidve's parents visited the place where he

:02:39. > :02:45.was killed today. We just would like to see where he

:02:45. > :02:49.got shot, and those memories we will keep in our mind throughout

:02:49. > :02:53.our life. Earlier they saw their son's hotel room. Mr Bidve was on

:02:53. > :02:56.his way from here to join the queue for the Manchester sales in the

:02:56. > :03:00.early hours of Boxing Day morning when he was attacked. The Lancaster

:03:00. > :03:03.University student was with friends when he was shot in the head. Mr

:03:03. > :03:06.Bidve's family heard of his death on the social networking site,

:03:06. > :03:09.Facebook, and they were critical of the British authorities for not

:03:09. > :03:16.contacting them sooner. Today, the Prime Minister spoke to them by

:03:16. > :03:21.phone. Quite understandably, they want to see where their son was

:03:21. > :03:27.living, what happened at the end of his life. I imagine the police are

:03:27. > :03:32.giving every facility to help them do that. Is it your view that the

:03:32. > :03:39.way the authorities have handled this has changed? Yes, the police

:03:39. > :03:43.are taking this very seriously. We have prayed to God, we feel that

:03:43. > :03:50.justice will come to our son. visit today was a chance for local

:03:50. > :03:56.people to express their sympathy. came to give condolence to the

:03:56. > :04:00.family. I was really concerned about my wife, myself. Because we

:04:00. > :04:03.walk on this road every single day. Earlier this week, a local man,

:04:03. > :04:07.Kiaran Stapleton, appeared in court accused of murdering Mr Bidve. Four

:04:07. > :04:10.others have been arrested in connection with the student's death.

:04:10. > :04:17.Tonight, Mr and Mrs Bidve will complete their journey, heading

:04:17. > :04:20.back to India with their son's body. You've been speaking exclusively to

:04:21. > :04:30.a man close to Kiaran Stapleton, the man charged with Anuj Bidve's

:04:30. > :04:36.murder. What did he tell you? is Andrew Burgess, Kiaran

:04:36. > :04:44.Stapleton's cousin. They live together in Salford. Earlier this

:04:44. > :04:49.afternoon, he told me how he sees the accused man. He is a good kid.

:04:49. > :04:57.He is a really good kid. He has worked since he left school. He has

:04:57. > :05:06.done everything he can, training, flying lessons, everything. For

:05:06. > :05:11.somebody to do something like this, and the police are saying it is him.

:05:11. > :05:18.There has got to be something there, but nothing whatsoever. He is a

:05:18. > :05:23.really good kid. That was the cousin of Kiaran Stapleton. The

:05:23. > :05:26.case continues and he is likely to go on trial in June.

:05:26. > :05:28.A Merseyside husband, accused of murdering his pregnant wife, says

:05:29. > :05:31.he's appalled that police allegedly failed to disclose evidence that

:05:31. > :05:34.could overturn his conviction. Eddie Gilfoyle always denied

:05:34. > :05:38.hanging his wife Paula at their Wirral home in 1992, and then

:05:38. > :05:41.making it look like suicide. Now it's claimed that for at least

:05:41. > :05:44.sixteen years police had a diary in which Paula describes taking an

:05:44. > :05:48.overdose of pills when she was a teenager. Eddie Gilfoyle's legal

:05:48. > :05:55.team say it's vital evidence which the jury never heard. Andy Gill

:05:55. > :05:58.reports. Paula Gilfoyle was said to be

:05:58. > :06:02.looking forward to becoming a mum. The last person you'd expect to

:06:02. > :06:06.hang themselves. But now The Times reveals details of Paula's teenage

:06:06. > :06:15.diary. She says she took an overdose after a row with a

:06:15. > :06:17.boyfriend. "Took some tablets. 10. Mark went mad but I done it to

:06:17. > :06:25.him." Eddie Gilfoyle's defence unearthed the diaries at Merseyside

:06:25. > :06:28.Police station in 2010. But police had had them since at least 1994.

:06:28. > :06:36.The absolutely appalled with this, the fact they have sat on this

:06:36. > :06:42.evidence for so long, and not disclosed them, it is disgusting,

:06:42. > :06:46.disgraceful. How can this be allowed to happen? It was claimed

:06:46. > :06:49.Eddie persuaded Paula to put her neck in a noose in their garage and

:06:49. > :06:52.duped her into writing a suicide note. Merseyside Police say they

:06:52. > :06:55.can't comment as the matter is before the Criminal Case Review

:06:55. > :06:58.Commission. It's not clear if they had the diaries since the original

:06:58. > :07:06.investigation. Or if Lancashire Police unearthed them when they

:07:06. > :07:11.reviewed the case in 94. The new evidence about Paula's state of

:07:11. > :07:15.mind goes to the heart of the case against her husband. If the jury in

:07:15. > :07:19.1993 had known she had taken an overdose as a teenager, then they

:07:19. > :07:24.could have had a very different view about prosecution evidence

:07:24. > :07:28.that she simply wasn't the kind of woman to take her own life.

:07:28. > :07:33.think this is very compelling material. It has been presented

:07:33. > :07:36.with other material, and we would hope that the Criminal Cases Review

:07:37. > :07:40.Commission will refer this matter swiftly to the Court of Appeal.

:07:40. > :07:50.Paula's family said today they're 150% convinced Eddie is guilty.

:07:50. > :07:51.

:07:51. > :07:57.Eddie says it's time for the Home Secretary to intervene in his case.

:07:57. > :08:07.JD Sports has emerged as the successful bidder for the retailer,

:08:07. > :08:10.

:08:10. > :08:14.blacks. It is under so would the company will take on all 308 stores.

:08:14. > :08:17.The A woman, whose mother and daughter were killed in an arson

:08:17. > :08:20.attack in Bolton, is appealing for help to track down their killers.

:08:20. > :08:24.Saima Mian's daughter Alana, who was four, and mother Hamida Begum

:08:24. > :08:27.died in the fire in June 2008. Saima was visiting from Australia

:08:27. > :08:36.when a wheelie bin was set alight outside her parent's home. Three

:08:36. > :08:40.people have been convicted of witness intimidation.

:08:40. > :08:44.After covering just 15 miles of the Antarctic ice on the first day of

:08:44. > :08:54.her expedition to the South Pole for Sport Relief, the Cumbrian Blue

:08:54. > :09:00.

:09:00. > :09:02.Peter presenter Helen Skelton is The male nurse arrested on

:09:02. > :09:05.suspicion of poisoning and tampering with medical records at

:09:06. > :09:08.Stepping Hill Hospital has been named as Victorino Chua. The 46-

:09:08. > :09:11.year-old Filipino nurse from Heaton Chapel was arrested yesterday and

:09:11. > :09:14.is still being questioned. Meanwhile, the family of a fourth

:09:14. > :09:18.patient whose death is being linked to the contamination of saline at

:09:18. > :09:20.the hospital last summer have described him as "A kind and

:09:20. > :09:24.generous man, a loving father and grandfather." Bill Dickson, 82,

:09:24. > :09:34.died on New Year's Eve. For the latest, let's go to Nina Warhurst.

:09:34. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:38.What more do we know today about the man arrested? Victorino Chua

:09:38. > :09:44.was arrested yesterday in the Heaton Chapel area of Stockport. It

:09:44. > :09:50.is important to stress the patient whose records these are linked to

:09:50. > :09:54.has now been discharged from Stepping Hill Hospital. Neighbours

:09:54. > :09:58.described a very warm and friendly family man who was always willing

:09:58. > :10:03.to stop and chat. They also expressed these dramatic events of

:10:03. > :10:05.yesterday, starting with an unmarked car arriving in the

:10:05. > :10:12.morning and crime scene investigators staying throughout

:10:12. > :10:17.the day. In the mornings he waves and smiles. I saw him handcuffed

:10:17. > :10:22.and put into an unmarked car yesterday. He is very pleasant,

:10:22. > :10:29.good morning. It is shocking because it is a hospital that we

:10:29. > :10:36.all go to, we all know really well. It is worrying. There had been more

:10:36. > :10:41.details about Bill Dickson. Yes, the 82-year-old who lived in

:10:41. > :10:44.Cheadle Hume, his family paid tribute to him, describing him as a

:10:44. > :10:51.very kind and generous man with a great sense of humour, a loving

:10:51. > :10:55.husband, father and grandfather. Police have once again reminded us

:10:55. > :11:02.this remains an ongoing investigation and their inquiries

:11:02. > :11:04.continue. Still to come on North West

:11:04. > :11:08.Tonight: A Titanic undertaking. The radio enthusiasts who're hoping to

:11:08. > :11:14.recreate the great liner's radio room, to mark the centenary of her

:11:14. > :11:18.sinking. And, the Cod Army's Tangerine dream.

:11:18. > :11:28.Fleetwood face Blackpool for the first time in 30 years on a weekend

:11:28. > :11:31.

:11:31. > :11:35.of FA Cup derbies. It has captured the imagination.

:11:35. > :11:39.Now to the final part of our series looking at the influence science is

:11:39. > :11:41.having in modern sport, something which has led to some of our top

:11:41. > :11:44.rugby league stars becoming students. Thanks to a link-up

:11:44. > :11:47.between Wigan Warriors and the University of Central Lancashire,

:11:47. > :11:57.players now study sports science courses - while undergraduates use

:11:57. > :11:57.

:11:57. > :12:05.their skills to help the rugby team. He's the biggest name in rugby

:12:05. > :12:11.league. So imagine the surprise when sports science students found

:12:11. > :12:19.Sam Tomkins on one of their modules. The students must have been

:12:19. > :12:24.impressed. We were impressed by them. What did you learn? We're

:12:24. > :12:28.used to being told what to do, but we don't know why. It was good to

:12:28. > :12:30.get an insight into how the body works, and why we do certain things.

:12:30. > :12:37.The partnership between Wigan and UCLAN is based around sports

:12:37. > :12:44.science. By studying, players learn more. And students like Zoe get to

:12:44. > :12:54.teach them. They are hands on. is good to see these professional

:12:54. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :12:59.guys. We have had Pat Richards on the course as well. Teams will come

:12:59. > :13:04.in pre-season and we will assess basic cardiac function, aerobic

:13:04. > :13:08.function, strength, power. Eight students are working with them.

:13:08. > :13:10.Lifting the Challenge Cup in August and now lifting weights ahead of

:13:10. > :13:20.the new season, Sean O'Loughlin's also halfway through a sports

:13:20. > :13:22.

:13:22. > :13:27.science degree. You are training every day. Your body is adapting.

:13:27. > :13:32.When you finish, you have something to fall back on. It would be good

:13:32. > :13:36.to get a degree under my belt. you'll be able to run tests on all

:13:36. > :13:45.these? Have they come to you for advice yet? Not yet! Once he's

:13:46. > :13:49.completed his degree, they might change their tune.

:13:49. > :13:52.A group of marine radio enthusiasts on Merseyside have recreated the

:13:52. > :13:56.radio room of the Titanic in time for this year's centenary of the

:13:56. > :14:06.disaster. The Liverpool registered ocean liner Titanic sank in April

:14:06. > :14:12.

:14:12. > :14:15.1912 with the loss of more than Before satellites, sailors relied

:14:15. > :14:20.on terrestrial radio to communicate and sometimes to pinpoint where

:14:20. > :14:25.they were. This got us home quite a few times in the old days when we

:14:25. > :14:30.did not have radar. Here, Stan McNally of the Marine Radio Museum

:14:30. > :14:33.demonstrates an World War II technology. He and other volunteers

:14:33. > :14:38.started the museum five years ago to stop all radio kit being lost

:14:38. > :14:46.forever. We'd also like to be able to show children how we did it in

:14:47. > :14:50.our time. If you forget your past, museum is housed in a chilly, when

:14:50. > :14:54.swept tower in New Brighton. They have bowled radio kit from the old

:14:54. > :15:00.Isle of Man steamers, among others. Now they want to recreate the radio

:15:00. > :15:05.room of the Titanic. In April it will be 100 years since she sank in

:15:05. > :15:09.the North Atlantic. Stan MAP -- Stan McNally says radio plays a key

:15:09. > :15:13.role in the Titanic because the ship could call for help.

:15:13. > :15:18.Titanic was right at the beginning of radio and through radio,

:15:18. > :15:23.although there was a great loss of life, there was quite a few people

:15:23. > :15:27.saved. They have no financial backing for the titanic project.

:15:27. > :15:33.They are relying on public donations and their own pockets but

:15:33. > :15:38.they say they are determined to get the job done.

:15:38. > :15:42.Tony is here with the sport and the mystery thickens. It is getting for

:15:42. > :15:47.deer by the minute but there is extraordinary footage for Amir Khan.

:15:47. > :15:52.This is worth seeing. Let's catch up. Remember, Amir Khan

:15:52. > :15:57.controversially lost his title belts to Lamont Peterson in

:15:57. > :16:01.Washington DC. Amir has insisted he was unfairly treated by the judges

:16:01. > :16:05.and now this incredible footage has been unearthed. While the fight

:16:05. > :16:10.goes on an unknown man repeatedly speaks to WBA supervisor Michael

:16:10. > :16:12.Welsh. Amir believes he should not have been there, did not have any

:16:13. > :16:19.accreditation and afterwards was seen celebrating in Peterson's

:16:20. > :16:23.corner. There was a person, nobody in years -- nobody knows who he was.

:16:23. > :16:27.He was sat with officials on the judges' table. Through the fight

:16:27. > :16:32.his head was down, going through papers and stuff and I want to know

:16:32. > :16:36.who he was and what his role was, why he was sat there and what he

:16:36. > :16:41.was basically doing because in my opinion he looked like he was

:16:41. > :16:45.messing around with the judges'' cards. When the pictures came out

:16:45. > :16:48.yesterday, people might have thought it was sour grapes and he

:16:48. > :16:53.did not want to face facts but the more you see the pictures, the more

:16:53. > :16:57.you think Amir Khan could have a point. He wants to know who it is.

:16:57. > :17:01.He has been told he will be told within 24 hours but the Washington

:17:01. > :17:04.Boxing Commission and the WBA both say at the moment they seem not to

:17:05. > :17:09.know who he is. There are more serious implications. Have a look

:17:09. > :17:13.at this. These are the judges' scorecards and you can see here

:17:13. > :17:16.they are clearly altered while Amir and his team are asking if the

:17:16. > :17:21.mystery man had a hand in their tent crucially they want to know if

:17:21. > :17:26.the judges had a sudden change of mind at the end of the fight.

:17:26. > :17:32.spoke to someone at the end of the fight and when I got there first

:17:32. > :17:36.set-off score cards I was winning two-one. Then there was a big delay.

:17:36. > :17:40.It was straight after the fight. After a couple of minutes the score

:17:40. > :17:45.cards were taken off him and he was given the scorecards back again

:17:45. > :17:50.with Lamont Peterson winning this point, -- with Le Monde Peterson

:17:50. > :17:54.winning this time. We have not heard the end of that. The official

:17:54. > :17:58.appeal will be held later this month. Sir Alex Ferguson has said

:17:58. > :18:02.he sees no need for United to hold talks with Liverpool to ease

:18:02. > :18:06.tensions following the Luis Suarez case. It has been reported that

:18:06. > :18:11.Liverpool was seeking discussions with United amid fears of potential

:18:12. > :18:17.problems the next time they play. Suarez is expected to play at Old

:18:17. > :18:20.Trafford, his first away game after completing his ban. Sir Alex's

:18:20. > :18:24.annoyed that apparent overtures have been made through the media.

:18:24. > :18:29.You would have thought they would come to Manchester United but I

:18:29. > :18:33.don't see why there is any need for that to be honest and I have

:18:33. > :18:37.nothing to say about it, to be honest with you. Sir Alex has also

:18:37. > :18:41.dismissed reports that United are going to make a 10 million bid for

:18:41. > :18:44.Frank Lampard. Instead he is focusing on the FA Cup tie at

:18:44. > :18:48.Manchester City, a chance to avenge the six-one defeat earlier this

:18:48. > :18:54.season. City are disappointed that Yaya Toure will not play. He will

:18:54. > :18:57.be missing at the African Cup of Nations. Roberto Mancini says he

:18:58. > :19:01.needs more players but the club recently posted the biggest

:19:01. > :19:07.financial loss in football history and he may have to sell before he

:19:07. > :19:14.can buy any more. We have a problem because Yaya Toure is an important

:19:14. > :19:17.player for us. For Sunday we have 17 players, we have 18 on the bench.

:19:17. > :19:24.For this reason I think it is better that we sell some players

:19:24. > :19:28.before and after, if we need we can -- if we need maybe we can taken

:19:28. > :19:32.more players. Kenny Dalglish will be relieved he can get back to

:19:32. > :19:36.matters on the pitch when Liverpool play Oldham in the third round of

:19:36. > :19:39.the FA Cup. 6,000 all Dame -- Oldham fans queued up in the

:19:39. > :19:43.morning to get tickets and the League One side are determined to

:19:43. > :19:47.put on a good performance. They have been fans queuing since for

:19:47. > :19:50.road block in the morning to get tickets and that is fantastic. The

:19:50. > :19:54.queues went all the way around the stadium and it shows what it means

:19:54. > :19:58.to the fans and the club as well. People talk about Steven Gerrard

:19:58. > :20:01.making his comeback from injury. Whether he starts is the big

:20:01. > :20:05.question. However they put out they have world-class players. We are

:20:05. > :20:07.the underdogs. We have seen it time and again that magic can happen and

:20:07. > :20:12.that is what we are looking to do on the night.

:20:12. > :20:17.For many people the most romantic fixture is the Fylde coast derby

:20:17. > :20:20.between Fleetwood Town at Blackpool. It is more than three decades since

:20:20. > :20:24.the two sides last met but we have managed to track down some footage

:20:24. > :20:28.of the match in 1988 that you will not have seen before, which was

:20:28. > :20:38.given to us by a black Paul Farmer, who filmed it from the terraces.

:21:13. > :21:16.millions of pounds of the development, but in 1980 it was a

:21:16. > :21:21.different story. It was so ramshackle that Blackpool insisted

:21:21. > :21:27.on the game being moved to Bloomfield Road. When I first

:21:27. > :21:34.started here it was a little old ground, the grass was about two ft

:22:14. > :22:20.have us, which we probably didn't want to come to be honest. But it

:22:20. > :22:25.is a brilliant scenario for them. We were asking for two it -- I even

:23:53. > :23:59.are they going to take over? As we went up the stairs it was so lovely.

:23:59. > :24:03.The whole of the cast were there. Meryl Streep was there as Margaret

:24:40. > :24:47.one couple this city and the film will be forever linked to their

:24:47. > :24:51.special day. I am going to meet my mum, I had a big bouquet of flowers,

:24:51. > :24:56.they were from Meryl Streep. It did not feel real again, we were

:24:56. > :25:06.laughing about it. We will watch the film and think that was at our

:25:07. > :25:10.wedding. That is a stunning story! Amazing.

:25:10. > :25:20.The building is gorgeous, if you have never been to Manchester Town

:25:20. > :25:23.Hall you really should. It is Not beautiful, I'm afraid. It will

:25:23. > :25:27.be a weekend that you can get out and about and it could be culled.

:25:27. > :25:30.If you are heading out this evening, the day went to plan, sunshine in

:25:30. > :25:33.the morning, the cloud buildings through the afternoon and spots of

:25:33. > :25:37.drizzly rain are starting to develop over the next couple of

:25:37. > :25:41.hours and they will become more widespread. You might bump into

:25:41. > :25:46.that. There is not a huge amount around. Shortly after midnight you

:25:46. > :25:50.will see cloud gradually breaking in places as the rain dies away and

:25:50. > :25:54.dries up. Even though we will see breaks and the cloud cover I can't

:25:54. > :25:59.see temperatures being a problem. We have the weft -- we have it

:25:59. > :26:02.south-westerly wind, which is mild. Six-seven Celsius, may be a degree

:26:02. > :26:07.Celsius along the coast. Not feeling chilly tomorrow morning.

:26:07. > :26:10.For tomorrow, and mixed picture. You can see there is cloud cover

:26:10. > :26:14.and over the highest ground there will be spots of drizzly rain from

:26:15. > :26:18.time to time. It is north-westerly, which calls things off but every

:26:18. > :26:22.now and then I think you will see some sunshine. It is not really

:26:22. > :26:26.showing up here but I think you will catch a glimpse of sunshine.

:26:26. > :26:30.It will start to brighten your day. That north-westerly breeze does not

:26:30. > :26:35.do us any favours, even though the temperatures will be eight or nine

:26:35. > :26:38.Celsius. They are not rising that much from overnight values. It will

:26:38. > :26:43.not feel as good as that with the breeze. From Saturday Night and

:26:43. > :26:47.Sunday, cloud cover, the temperatures are quite good. There

:26:47. > :26:50.will be spots of drizzle from time to time. It is not going to be

:26:50. > :26:54.amounting to too much more than that. For Sunday, Sunday does not

:26:54. > :26:59.look like it will be a stunning day but it is not a bad one. I think

:26:59. > :27:03.you will find the weather fronts come towards us for the tail-end of

:27:03. > :27:06.the day. Most of the day will be dry for stopping the north-westerly

:27:06. > :27:10.you can never discount the fact you will pick up a shower from time to

:27:16. > :27:20.bike Asante drizzle every now and then. Temperatures ten Celsius.

:27:20. > :27:26.Gradually it starts to cool off again. Can you live with it? Just
