:00:12. > :00:15.Welcome to the programme. Our top story: a man is charged with
:00:15. > :00:20.manslaughter after a woman died trying to protect her handbag
:00:20. > :00:25.containing her husband's ashes. We are live in Oldham where the search
:00:25. > :00:30.for those ashes continues. All soap: the carers told to hand
:00:30. > :00:35.in their grant money because they did not spend it quickly enough.
:00:35. > :00:43.Payback time. Three men were jailed after failing to get rich from a
:00:43. > :00:49.string of cash. Thefts. These are professional criminals. -- ATM
:00:49. > :00:59.theft. And hitting all the right notes.
:00:59. > :01:05.
:01:05. > :01:11.The instrument maker who swapped First, here was a crime that
:01:11. > :01:16.shocked the region. A vulnerable 79-year-old Granta mother found in
:01:16. > :01:20.an alley way clutching just the strap of a handbag that contain the
:01:20. > :01:25.ashes of her late husband -- grandmother. Nellie Geraghty never
:01:25. > :01:30.recovered and the Ashes have yet to be found. A man has been charged
:01:30. > :01:37.with her manslaughter. What more can you tell us about the breaking
:01:37. > :01:43.news? The man who has been charged is 37-
:01:43. > :01:48.year-old not quarrel. He has no fixed address. He is charged with
:01:48. > :01:53.manslaughter and robbery. He will appear before magistrates tomorrow.
:01:53. > :01:59.He has already been charged in connection with another robbery of
:01:59. > :02:02.a 35-year-old woman in Rochdale. She also had her handbag stolen.
:02:02. > :02:09.That case is still progressing through the courts.
:02:09. > :02:16.It was a crime that shocked many people in the area. Remind us about
:02:16. > :02:22.the background. Nellie Geraghty was 79-year-old and she was found in an
:02:22. > :02:28.alleyway here in November last year. She was taken to hospital but she
:02:28. > :02:33.died. She had suffered serious head injuries. The handbag that you
:02:33. > :02:37.mentioned is still missing. Local people helped the police search for
:02:37. > :02:44.it. It was so important because it contained the ashes of her deceased
:02:44. > :02:48.husband. Her idea was that when she died, she too would be cremated and
:02:48. > :02:53.their ashes would be scattered to get there on his allotment. There
:02:53. > :02:58.was also 200 in the handbag. That is also missing. The police have
:02:58. > :03:03.thanked the local community for their help in this case. Tier
:03:03. > :03:06.teenagers were questioned earlier. They have since been ruled out of
:03:06. > :03:10.the police inquiries. The investigation continues and this
:03:10. > :03:16.man will appear before magistrates tomorrow morning.
:03:16. > :03:20.Thank you. Next, parents of disabled children
:03:20. > :03:25.in Trafford are being told to repay thousands of pounds in allowances
:03:25. > :03:29.that they received from the council. The authority has decided to invoke
:03:29. > :03:32.a clause in their direct payment contracts which requires them to
:03:32. > :03:36.refund any unused money. The parents say they were
:03:36. > :03:46.previously assured that they could roll the funds forward. The council
:03:46. > :03:46.
:03:47. > :03:53.says that with money tied, it must make the best use of every penny.
:03:53. > :03:57.This boy is 14 and he has learned his abilities and epilepsy. His mum
:03:57. > :04:01.receives direct payments from the council to help with his care. She
:04:01. > :04:06.buys two hours of a specialist care every week. She has not used all of
:04:06. > :04:11.the money allocated this year. care was seriously ill and she was
:04:11. > :04:15.in hospital for a while and needed to take some time off. -- hour
:04:15. > :04:20.carer. Instead of replacing her which is a lengthy and difficult
:04:20. > :04:23.process, finding the right person, and also summoned to build up a
:04:23. > :04:28.relationship with George, we asked if we could carry that over and use
:04:28. > :04:32.the extra hours when she was well. We were told we could do that.
:04:32. > :04:36.told you that? A social worker and a representative of the direct
:04:36. > :04:42.payments team. Now Trafford Council says the unused money should be
:04:42. > :04:50.given back. It amounts to 900. am in a difficult position where I
:04:50. > :04:53.do not know what I can spend. There has been no clarification. This is
:04:53. > :04:58.one of 40 families in Trafford to have been told to pay back unused
:04:58. > :05:00.funds. Trafford Council points out that there has always been a clause
:05:00. > :05:05.in the contract which says that funds not used within three months
:05:05. > :05:10.can be reclaimed. The authority has now decided to invoke that clause
:05:10. > :05:14.as it tries to make best use of scarce resources. Do you not accept
:05:14. > :05:18.that in those difficult financial times, councils must make best use
:05:18. > :05:23.of every penny? Surely money should be being used to help other people
:05:23. > :05:28.rather than being in your account? This money has been allocated to
:05:28. > :05:35.our son for his care needs. It was decided by a panel. We should be
:05:35. > :05:39.notified properly if the situation has changed.
:05:39. > :05:43.The other stories: the Prime Minister has said that the fight to
:05:43. > :05:47.sell meat Eurofighter Typhoon to India is now in the final stages. A
:05:47. > :05:51.group of Lancashire MPs met David Cameron this afternoon to encourage
:05:51. > :05:55.him to keep up the pressure. India has indicated it would prefer to
:05:55. > :06:00.buy a French plane but the MPs got an assurance that the Government
:06:00. > :06:06.would keep on lobbying. He felt that, as we all do, this deal is at
:06:06. > :06:10.its final stages but it would be foolish to stop now and accept that
:06:10. > :06:14.we could not still win it. The commitment we got was that the UK
:06:14. > :06:18.government would do everything it could be in the final weeks to work
:06:18. > :06:22.with the German government to try and win this Indian contract.
:06:22. > :06:27.fell walker who died after a fall in Cumbria yesterday has been named
:06:27. > :06:31.as Peter Huntley. The 55-year-old from Preston fell around 200 ft
:06:31. > :06:36.from a ledge while walking with a friend above Blea Water. He was
:06:36. > :06:41.pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics on the air ambulance and
:06:41. > :06:44.Penrith Mountain Rescue. The father of a woman murdered by
:06:44. > :06:48.her ex-boyfriend has handed in a petition to Number 10 calling for
:06:48. > :06:52.more protection for domestic violence victims. Clare Wood was
:06:52. > :06:56.strangled by George Appleton three years ago. Her father Michael wants
:06:56. > :06:59.the introduction of Clare's Law so that women can find out whether
:06:59. > :07:03.their partners have a history of domestic violence.
:07:03. > :07:06.Greater Manchester Police has been asked to intervene to stop the far-
:07:07. > :07:10.right English Defence League from marching this weekend. The EDL want
:07:10. > :07:14.to protest about an attack on these two teenagers in the town earlier
:07:14. > :07:17.this month. Tameside Council want Greater Manchester Police to appeal
:07:17. > :07:20.to the Home Office to stop the march.
:07:21. > :07:25.Two from a pair homeworkers on Merseyside who stole nearly
:07:25. > :07:31.100,000 from their elderly patients have been jailed. Joan
:07:31. > :07:35.Vernon who managed Speke Care Home was sentenced to four years and her
:07:35. > :07:39.deputy Kathleen Treble was given four years and three months. The
:07:39. > :07:44.court was told that they regularly stole from residents, two of which
:07:44. > :07:48.had dementia. The judge described them as mean and despicable.
:07:48. > :07:54.Free nurseries and one primary school are to be closed on the Isle
:07:54. > :07:57.of Man. The government there has announced that all 11 of the
:07:57. > :08:02.island's funded pre-schools are two players from September. It will
:08:02. > :08:06.affect 500 children and 31 jobs. Thousands of mothers have signed a
:08:06. > :08:11.petition and they will protest outside the island's parliament
:08:11. > :08:16.when the budget is announced tomorrow. People are furious. They
:08:16. > :08:19.are spending money on absolute rubbish, the government are. To say
:08:19. > :08:22.that the time has come to cut services and we are going to start
:08:22. > :08:26.with nurseries and libraries is something that people are not going
:08:26. > :08:30.to wear. A gang of thieves from Merseyside who travelled the length
:08:30. > :08:34.of England stealing cash machines have been jailed by a total of 19
:08:34. > :08:38.years. They spent seven months targeting cash machines from
:08:38. > :08:42.Cleveland to Cornwall. Today a court heard that they were
:08:42. > :08:46.in it for the money but ended up making less than they would have
:08:46. > :08:50.done on the minimum wage. All three pleaded guilty to conspiracy to
:08:50. > :08:55.commit burglary. They broke in by night after
:08:55. > :09:00.visiting by day to deactivate the alarms. The team of men from
:09:00. > :09:05.Merseyside club's -- sometimes clocked up over 2,000 -- two dozen
:09:05. > :09:13.Mars a month. At Flamingoland, they used a crowbar to escape with cash.
:09:13. > :09:17.Sometimes, they just took the whole machine. This is a team of burglars
:09:17. > :09:23.from Merseyside who have travelled up and down the country, as far
:09:23. > :09:27.north as Cleveland, and down to Cornwall and Dorset. And everywhere
:09:27. > :09:32.in between, they have been going. They got away with at least 43,000
:09:32. > :09:34.in total but which was an expensive business. The gang, David Owens and
:09:34. > :09:41.Shaun Ennis from Stockbridge Village and Kevin Caveney from
:09:41. > :09:46.Speke, spent thousands on cars and fuel. Owens's defence lawyer
:09:46. > :09:50.calculated that they would have earned more working on the minimum
:09:50. > :09:54.wage. Their prison sentences totalled more than 19 years. The
:09:54. > :10:01.judge told them it was a highly sophisticated organised crime. He
:10:01. > :10:05.said, you have caused damage costing tens of thousands of pounds
:10:05. > :10:10.to businesses across the country. They were targeting vulnerable
:10:10. > :10:14.businesses, local shops, colleges. The disruption caused is
:10:14. > :10:18.immeasurable. Some of the money has already been recovered. Police say
:10:18. > :10:26.they are working with the cash machine industry to try to stop
:10:26. > :10:29.this happening again. Next, black community groups have
:10:29. > :10:37.accused Liverpool Football Club of exciting races and because of the
:10:37. > :10:41.way they handled the Luis Suarez affair. The FA banned him after he
:10:41. > :10:48.abused Patrice Evra. The group say that Liverpool have not really
:10:49. > :10:52.accepted the FA's decision. Black community groups from
:10:52. > :10:57.Merseyside and beyond the queues Liverpool FC of presiding over the
:10:57. > :11:00.worst incident of races and in football in recent years. They sate
:11:00. > :11:05.its action in supporting Luis Suarez fell short of the high
:11:05. > :11:09.standards of leadership expected of it. In a city like ours where we
:11:09. > :11:13.have black and white living happily side by side, it has raised
:11:13. > :11:18.tensions and people have said that. It has damaged the reputation, not
:11:18. > :11:27.just of Liverpool FC, but of our city. We will be known as a city
:11:27. > :11:30.that is intolerant. After his ban ended, Luis Suarez refused to shake
:11:30. > :11:36.Patrice Evra's hand when their teams play each other earlier this
:11:36. > :11:39.month. The club and Luis Suarez apologised but in a letter to Kenny
:11:39. > :11:45.Dalglish and the club directors, the black consortium says that
:11:45. > :11:49.efforts to combat races and have been undermined. -- to combat
:11:49. > :11:55.racism. The letter says that Liverpool's refusal to accept the
:11:55. > :11:58.FA's findings, its support for Luis Suarez and his refusal to Sheikh
:11:58. > :12:05.Patrice Evra's hand, could be considered as inciting racial
:12:06. > :12:11.intolerance. In the historic home of the city's black community, we
:12:11. > :12:15.found a different use. It has caused bad taste in the mouth. I
:12:15. > :12:20.think it has given Liverpool the kind of name we do not want. Do you
:12:20. > :12:26.think it has affected race relations in Liverpool? Know. It is
:12:26. > :12:30.only a game after all. -- no. asked the club for a response
:12:30. > :12:34.earlier today but so far we have not heard from them.
:12:34. > :12:39.We have just had a statement from Liverpool Football Club. The
:12:39. > :12:42.spokesman said, we have a long and successful track record of social
:12:43. > :12:46.inclusion and that we are committed along with the relevant agencies to
:12:46. > :12:52.tackling racism. That statement came in in the last three minutes.
:12:52. > :13:00.In a moment, the sport. Before that, still to come, on the final lap,
:13:00. > :13:05.who will win the sprint finish to make the Olympic cycling team?

:13:15. > :13:17.
:13:17. > :13:20.Sport now, and an amazing admission from Sir Alex Ferguson today? Sir
:13:20. > :13:29.Alex has confessed that he could have bought the England goalkeeper
:13:29. > :13:32.Joe Hart for just 100,000 back in 2006. But he passed up the
:13:32. > :13:35.opportunity, and what is even more galling for Sir Alex, is that
:13:35. > :13:38.Shrewsbury then sold Hart to Manchester City. The United boss
:13:38. > :13:41.admits that Hart is easily the best English goalkeeper for the past 20
:13:41. > :13:50.years. Of course, Sir Alex did buy another excellent keeper, Edwin Van
:13:50. > :13:52.Der Sar, in 2005. But since Van Der Sar retired, his replacement David
:13:52. > :14:02.Sar retired, his replacement David De Gea, has been criticised after
:14:02. > :14:07.some embarrassing errors. Although, some embarrassing errors. Although,
:14:07. > :14:10.that is a blinder right there. In a revealing interview, which can you
:14:10. > :14:13.hear on Radio Five Live just after 7pm tonight and where he also talks
:14:13. > :14:17.about Twitter, the last time he went on a bus and his famous
:14:17. > :14:20.hairdryer, he says of Hart, "We all make mistakes." Mind you, he has
:14:20. > :14:27.won 12 titles and two European Cups, so I don't think he is losing too

:14:30. > :14:34.Liverpool could be on their way to Wembley for the second time this
:14:34. > :14:37.season after crushing Brighton 6-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round with the

:14:41. > :14:43.last year's finalists Stoke City. This year could still see an all-

:14:52. > :14:54.One Wembley final just days away and now joint favourites to make
:14:54. > :15:01.another. Some Liverpool fans are starting to get the feeling this
:15:01. > :15:06.could be their cup year. I am confident. Definitely. Confident
:15:06. > :15:09.right down to my boots! The reds have struggled to put teams away at
:15:09. > :15:12.Anfield this season. But partly thanks to their own good play.
:15:12. > :15:15.Martin Skertl got them off and running. And partly down to good

:15:18. > :15:22.equalizer must have given the home faithful that here we go again
:15:22. > :15:26.feeling. -- whose equaliser. But no fewer than three own goals. This
:15:26. > :15:28.the first. An excellent finish from Andy Carroll. Who then set up Luis
:15:28. > :15:31.Suarez for another. Made it a satisfying night all round for
:15:31. > :15:37.Kenny Dalglish's men. Suarez thankful his earlier failure from
:15:37. > :15:40.the spot didn't matter. Merseyside's blues are starting to
:15:40. > :15:45.find some form. And made short work of the Championship's in-form side

:17:21. > :17:24.cycling team despite a successful performance at the Olympic test
:17:24. > :17:27.event in London. The team finished top of the medal table with four
:17:27. > :17:31.golds, but there was disappointment for Bolton's Jason Kenny who faces

:18:40. > :18:43.winning the sprint, while Kenny could only manage fifth. Very
:18:43. > :18:51.disappointed. Every race between now and the Olympics matters. It is
:18:51. > :18:57.not long. You have good days and bad days. He has not done and

:20:30. > :20:37.easy. That will not happen to us. Thank you, Tony. Welcome back from
:20:37. > :20:40.your trip to the Lake District. I have a lovely time.
:20:40. > :20:47.The Lake District has always attracted visitors to see its
:20:47. > :20:51.natural beauty and wildlife. But more recently, those visitors have
:20:51. > :20:56.been hoping to catch a glimpse of something straight out of The X
:20:56. > :21:00.Files. We have all heard of the Loch Ness monster and it has done
:21:00. > :21:03.wonders for Scotland's tourist trade. But now we could have our
:21:03. > :21:06.very own mystery of the deep, lurking below the waters of
:21:06. > :21:10.Windermere. Some people believe that something
:21:11. > :21:14.is lurking beneath the waters of Lake Windermere. Sightings of a
:21:14. > :21:23.creature not dissimilar to the Loch Ness monster have been causing a
:21:23. > :21:32.stir. This part is called the deeps. I felt something brushed past me.
:21:33. > :21:40.It caused me to stop. I was lifted up and put down. I turned it to my
:21:40. > :21:45.friend and ask what it was. This professional photographer saw
:21:45. > :21:50.something which caught his eye. What do you think it is? Good
:21:50. > :21:54.question. It is a mystery. I took question. It is a mystery. I took
:21:54. > :21:58.eight per nine photographs. It lasted for 10 minutes. You can see
:21:58. > :22:01.lasted for 10 minutes. You can see a dark object on top of the water.
:22:01. > :22:09.One person convinced that something has been caught in the photographs
:22:09. > :22:18.is this scientist. I think it is an animal that was moving through the
:22:18. > :22:22.water. It appears to be of considerable size. Some
:22:22. > :22:28.professionals have analysed the photographs. There is something in
:22:28. > :22:34.the water. Why do most great mysteries, we have found something.
:22:34. > :22:38.But the results are inconclusive. And you can see more of that report
:22:39. > :22:45.on Inside Out at 7:30pm here on BBC One. We should not be sceptical.
:22:45. > :22:48.This could help with tourism. As musical instruments get ever
:22:48. > :22:52.more hi-tech, it is refreshing to find that some sounds still rely on
:22:52. > :22:55.old-fashioned skills. Matt Nolan from Lancashire has found himself
:22:55. > :22:58.in demand with some of the pop world's biggest stars by making the
:22:58. > :23:07.kind of instruments you just can't buy in the shops. Our reporter has
:23:07. > :23:14.been to meet him. It is a pure exploration of sound
:23:15. > :23:19.and art for this Lancashire-born drama. Four years ago, he stopped

:24:43. > :24:47.was asked to make a really big one. The triangle is like the joke

:25:08. > :25:15.Shelley try the weather again?! -- shall we.
:25:15. > :25:19.You temperatures are on the rise this week. By Thursday, it could be
:25:19. > :25:25.14 degrees. Not a huge amount of sunshine to a company that, but
:25:25. > :25:35.still feeling quite warm. Our reservoirs in the north-west are
:25:35. > :25:37.
:25:37. > :25:44.about 93% full. Four Cumbria and Lancashire, there will be heavy
:25:44. > :25:54.rain all week until Wednesday. Potentially up to 80 mm. Today has
:25:54. > :25:57.
:25:57. > :26:01.been about cloud cover and drizzly rain. Over night, there will be
:26:01. > :26:06.blanket cloud and the rain will keep on coming. The best place to
:26:06. > :26:16.be will be the Isle of Man. The wind will gradually start to ease
:26:16. > :26:17.
:26:17. > :26:23.down overnight. Temperatures are very good indeed. Tomorrow is a day
:26:23. > :26:28.of two halves. The best of the weather will be in southern parts
:26:28. > :26:36.towards the end of the day. For most of us, it will be similar to
:26:36. > :26:43.today. Cloud cover with rain. Really quite steady rain for parts
:26:43. > :26:50.of Lancashire. There is a south- westerly airflow so that cloud
:26:51. > :26:59.cover will try to break up. It could be decent for parts of
:26:59. > :27:08.Merseyside and Greater Manchester. But it will be predominantly cloudy.
:27:08. > :27:15.Temperatures are good. Nine or 11 degrees possible. But the rising

:27:24. > :27:31.Spring is on at the way! 20 minutes of sunshine every now and then?
