:00:14. > :00:20.Good evening. Fares for Fabrice it - a football unites in shock to as

:00:20. > :00:28.the midfielder fights for his life. All those kinds of things run a

:00:28. > :00:34.three ahead and just feel powerless. They were a devoted couple - so why

:00:34. > :00:38.did and 92-year-old husband kill himself and his elderly wife?

:00:38. > :00:42.Show us your money - how to get shoppers spending on our high

:00:42. > :00:47.streets again. And watch the programme a little

:00:47. > :00:57.bit later and you can find out more about my exhibition at the House of

:00:57. > :01:01.

:01:01. > :01:05.Annie Lennox. A in the heady world of Premier

:01:05. > :01:11.League football we are used to headlines involving wealth, glamour

:01:11. > :01:15.and scandal. But one footballer has brought the sport together in

:01:15. > :01:21.prayer. Fabrice Muamba has survived civil war to shine in a game where

:01:21. > :01:31.he has shown great promise. Tonight, he remains in hospital after

:01:31. > :01:37.collapsing in front of millions of years whilst playing against Spurs.

:01:37. > :01:39.Visitors have been at the hospital all day in London. People have been

:01:39. > :01:42.arriving at the Reebok Stadium all day.

:01:42. > :01:48.Some slightly more encouraging news about his condition from the club

:01:48. > :01:55.just a short time ago. I statement was released by the

:01:55. > :01:57.club earlier on this afternoon. Fabrice Muamba it remains in

:01:57. > :02:02.intensive care at the London chest Hospital where he is showing some

:02:02. > :02:07.signs of improvement. His heart is now beating without the help of

:02:07. > :02:10.medication and he is moving house at arms and legs. His long-term the

:02:10. > :02:15.prognosis will remain unclear for some time.

:02:15. > :02:21.Football figures including the England defender Ashley Cole had

:02:21. > :02:29.been among the many people visiting him today, along with on -- along

:02:29. > :02:36.with club manager Owen Coyle. We all know he is such a wonderful

:02:36. > :02:43.flat. He is a young man, I hope that will help in this brave fight

:02:43. > :02:48.that he is undergoing at the moment. That here in Bolton, messages of

:02:48. > :02:53.support are continuing to come end from throughout the world. A number

:02:53. > :03:00.of football shirts down here - clubs from all over sending their

:03:00. > :03:05.good wishes. Interestingly, in the last hour, the Sunderland coach

:03:05. > :03:13.called up here. They have left assure it which says, get well soon.

:03:13. > :03:18.It is signed by all the members of the Sunderland team.

:03:18. > :03:22.At terrific gesture, and as many have said, football has been united.

:03:22. > :03:26.Fabrice Muamba has had a tough upbringing. Tell us a bit more

:03:27. > :03:32.about his journey. His rise to the top of his profession has been a

:03:32. > :03:37.very difficult one. He was boring in what is now known as the

:03:37. > :03:41.Democratic Republic of the Congo. He came over here aged 11 years as

:03:41. > :03:45.an asylum seeker. He could not speak English at the time, despite

:03:45. > :03:51.that he passed all his exams and went on to become a footballer. He

:03:51. > :03:59.is regarded as a role model off the pitch, a very much tenacious

:03:59. > :04:04.midfielder player on it. For almost two decades, they had

:04:04. > :04:09.been a devoted couple. When 92- year-old Stanley Wilson stabbed and

:04:09. > :04:12.strangled his wife Peggie there were should -- there was shock

:04:12. > :04:17.among us family and friends in south Cumbria.

:04:17. > :04:27.Today, an inquest said that he acted out of character following an

:04:27. > :04:28.

:04:28. > :04:34.eye examination -- i operation. Why, in February last year did

:04:34. > :04:39.Stanley kill his wife end what has been called by sustained and

:04:39. > :04:43.violent assaults before turning the knife on himself?

:04:43. > :04:48.Witnesses have said that he changed in the last few months of his life.

:04:48. > :04:52.He was struggling with fading sight. Stanley had become paranoid,

:04:52. > :05:01.accusing Peggie and his family of trying to poison pen and make

:05:01. > :05:10.changes to his well. On February 17th, he was discharged from the

:05:10. > :05:17.Royal Lancaster Infirmary. His friend said he was horrified when

:05:17. > :05:21.he found out, because of the condition he had then Stanley in.

:05:21. > :05:25.His son said that he phoned his father who was quite short with him.

:05:25. > :05:28.The following day he be came round to check on him and find their

:05:29. > :05:33.bodies in the front bedroom. Tomorrow, some of the medical staff

:05:33. > :05:39.who cared for him in a spinal weeks will be giving evidence. The

:05:40. > :05:44.inquest is expected to last for three days.

:05:44. > :05:49.The Home Secretary Theresa May has ordered an inquiry into the leak of

:05:49. > :05:54.confidential government documents which showed that a police officer

:05:54. > :06:01.blamed drunken Liverpool fans for the Hillsborough disaster.

:06:01. > :06:07.Information was in -- was part of a briefing to Margaret Thatcher. The

:06:08. > :06:13.official inquiry blamed the police and not the fans.

:06:13. > :06:19.The Victorian water means in high tenor are being restored. There was

:06:19. > :06:22.a dramatic first last year, causing water to shoot 40 feet into the air,

:06:22. > :06:29.flooding streets and affecting more than 200 homes and businesses.

:06:29. > :06:36.A leading South Cumbrian politician has died suddenly. Brendan Jameson

:06:36. > :06:44.was the Liberal Democrat -- the Liberal Democrat leader of Kendall

:06:44. > :06:49.Fell. When it comes to the economy, we

:06:49. > :06:52.could be at the forefront of expanding export opportunities. But

:06:52. > :06:56.we also have more her empty shops and I street than anywhere else in

:06:56. > :06:59.the UK. How can we exploit that potential

:06:59. > :07:05.and effectively tackle our problems? That is the subject of a

:07:05. > :07:13.north-west tonight special. We gathered together groups of

:07:13. > :07:19.politicians, and members of the public.

:07:20. > :07:24.On the face of it, though statistics look pretty gloomy.

:07:24. > :07:31.16,000 people became unemployed in January. That was the highest rise

:07:31. > :07:36.in the UK. But it is not all bad. According to research by the BBC,

:07:36. > :07:46.buckle -- when it comes to expanding export this region is

:07:46. > :07:50.among the top three. EDM make a training and military equipment.

:07:50. > :07:56.However, the boss says that the Government needs to do more to

:07:56. > :08:00.support firms such as his. We need the Government to be

:08:00. > :08:03.supportive and strategic for us and for business across the country, to

:08:03. > :08:09.export our way out of the trouble that we are currently in. Despite

:08:09. > :08:12.that trouble, more and more new businesses are starting up.

:08:12. > :08:17.Warrington saw the most modest increase, and Stockport the biggest,

:08:18. > :08:21.with more than 2,300 starting out there. But Stockport has another

:08:22. > :08:25.claim to fame. The time has more empty shops and anywhere else in

:08:25. > :08:31.the country, with almost one in three town-centre shops currently

:08:31. > :08:35.vacant. This is Illyas Yusuf's shop in the town centre. He has seen

:08:35. > :08:40.businesses all around him go under. He wants to know what can be done

:08:40. > :08:46.to get customers back on to our High Street. It was one of the

:08:46. > :08:49.questions raised during a special Northwest Tonight debate. We can

:08:49. > :08:59.find solutions working in partnership with pencils and

:08:59. > :09:01.

:09:01. > :09:11.businesses. We could do something about the 80. We recently abolished

:09:11. > :09:30.

:09:30. > :09:35.parking dirges and retail sales went up by 25 per cent.

:09:35. > :09:39.Travel link across the UK and in just seven days, it will arrive in

:09:39. > :09:45.the north-west. We are talking about the Olympic -- the Olympic

:09:45. > :09:51.torch. They are going to get their hands on it? It arrives in

:09:51. > :09:55.Liverpool on the 1st June and that is where our reporter is now.

:09:55. > :10:02.They are expecting huge crowds here in Liverpool when the torch arrives

:10:02. > :10:06.on the 1st June. We are told there will be a very special performance

:10:06. > :10:12.by air very special guest our guests, but we're not been told he

:10:12. > :10:18.get. We will know more in a few weeks hopefully. 30 miles down the

:10:19. > :10:23.road, it is Chester's big moment, that is where the tort enters the

:10:23. > :10:27.north-west for the first time. Getting ready for an invasion of

:10:27. > :10:32.torch-bearers - the north-west gets its first glimpse of the torch in

:10:32. > :10:37.Chester on 29th May. The really takes inner-city sites and

:10:37. > :10:42.culminates in a party at the racecourse. We have 500 dancers

:10:42. > :10:49.from Cheshire, and we will end the evening on the most amazing display

:10:49. > :10:54.of fireworks and music. I at large will enter and leave the

:10:54. > :10:59.region three times. It will go to Bolton, then to Liverpool by at and

:10:59. > :11:04.Mersey ferry, then over to the Isle of Man on June 2nd. On 21st June it

:11:04. > :11:09.is back, this time arriving by boat. The next day it tends to Blackpool

:11:09. > :11:15.and by June 23rd it travels through Preston on route to Manchester. It

:11:15. > :11:19.will go to Leeds on the 24th. But he carries the torch like this?

:11:19. > :11:24.From hundreds and nominated, these are just a few of the community

:11:24. > :11:30.champions warming up for the really. To do something to be part of it is

:11:31. > :11:38.just fantastic. Family and friends will be there, guys from the

:11:38. > :11:43.regiment. It will be a fantastic day for everybody. They have got me

:11:43. > :11:53.running around already. At four Phil details about the race

:11:53. > :11:54.

:11:54. > :11:58.and the torch-bearers, Goto the BBC 2012 website. The organisers want

:11:58. > :12:08.families and communities to come out - a bit like these guys. They

:12:08. > :12:12.

:12:12. > :12:21.will be taking part on the day. the beat of the event, there is the

:12:21. > :12:26.youth orchestra, then woo will have some dancing and singing workshops.

:12:26. > :12:36.Fantastic. And on the day itself, what Toby -- what will we be

:12:36. > :12:38.

:12:38. > :12:46.expecting? We will be performing the Greek ceremonies. There will be

:12:46. > :12:56.dancing, fireworks, communities coming closer together.

:12:56. > :13:00.

:13:00. > :13:10.I believe you even have a celebrity guest. We will also have Olympic

:13:10. > :13:10.

:13:10. > :13:15.stick making. Would like the community to come

:13:15. > :13:22.together, because it is an opportunity we will never see again.

:13:22. > :13:26.You'll never get that opportunity again. I reckon it is 71 days until

:13:26. > :13:36.the Taj enters the north-west for the first time. Make sure you lock

:13:36. > :13:36.

:13:36. > :13:46.onto that website. You were almost in danger of being

:13:46. > :13:49.

:13:49. > :13:54.Richard's here with the sport now. This weekend's results taking a

:13:54. > :13:57.back seat with the health of Fabrice Muamba the top priority.

:13:57. > :14:00.Yes, while Fabrice remains seriously ill everyone at the

:14:00. > :14:02.Reebok is of course focussing on him and I think that's been

:14:02. > :14:05.underlined today by the decision to postpone tomorrow night's match

:14:05. > :14:13.against Aston Villa Bolton are still involved in a relegation

:14:13. > :14:19.battle and remain in the FA Cup of course. Yes, they have a huge match

:14:19. > :14:22.with Blackburn on Saturday in the Premier League. As for the FA Cup,

:14:22. > :14:25.there have been suggestions the club may pull out of the cup as

:14:25. > :14:32.players are too upset to return to White Hart Lane, although Captain

:14:32. > :14:37.Kevin Davies says a decision hasn't yet been made. It is just

:14:37. > :14:42.irrelevant at the minute, we will have to make that decision but the

:14:42. > :14:47.immediate focus is with Fabrice Muamba and his family. We will make

:14:47. > :14:51.a decision in the next couple of days but at the moment we can only

:14:51. > :14:54.think of Fabrice Muamba. To matters on the field now and an all-

:14:54. > :14:57.Merseyside FA Cup semi-final is on the cards - and Manchester United's

:14:57. > :14:59.position at the top of the Premiership was consolidated

:14:59. > :15:05.yesterday with a thumping win at Wolves. Mark Edwardson's been

:15:05. > :15:09.looking at the action. When Luis Suarez gave Liverpool the lead

:15:09. > :15:13.after a one-two with Maxi Rodriguez. But Peter Crouch was back to haunt

:15:13. > :15:15.his former team with a header to give Stoke City an equaliser. In

:15:15. > :15:18.the 57th minute Stuart Downing picked up Steven Gerrard's mis-

:15:18. > :15:28.controlled backheel to drill the a fierce left-footed shot past

:15:28. > :15:31.

:15:31. > :15:37.Sorensen. Two-one to Liverpool and a trip to Wembley booked. No. 1.

:15:37. > :15:41.is Liverpool, against Everton or Sunderland. To play a Merseyside

:15:41. > :15:44.derby at Wembley would be really special, we will see what happens.

:15:44. > :15:46.Dirk's dream depends on Everton beating Sunderland in their replay

:15:46. > :15:49.next week. David Moyes' side were 1-0 down courtesy of Phil

:15:49. > :15:52.Bardsley's powerful free kick early in in Saturday's game. Tim Cahill's

:15:52. > :15:56.skilful shot benefiting from a little good fortune redressed the

:15:56. > :15:59.balance. And that's how it ended - way before Wembley, the Toffees

:15:59. > :16:02.will pay a visit to the The Stadium of Light. In the Premiership,

:16:02. > :16:05.Manchester United demolished Wolves 5-nil. Johnny Evans opened United's

:16:05. > :16:12.account; Antonio Valencia and Danny Wellbeck helped themselves to one-

:16:12. > :16:15.each; Javier Hernandez finishing with a brace. It's tight at the

:16:15. > :16:19.bottom - and at the DW on Saturday, James McArthur's 54th minute goal

:16:19. > :16:22.must have given Wigan hope they could be out of the drop zone by

:16:22. > :16:32.tea-time. But the dream of three points evaporated when Latics old

:16:32. > :16:33.

:16:33. > :16:40.boy, Paul Scharner equalised for West Brom. Sometimes with seven or

:16:40. > :16:45.eight players, they would have chances. But they cannot score and

:16:45. > :16:47.are always conceding. You can see why they are bottom. Full time, 1-1.

:16:47. > :16:50.In the Championship Blackpool beat play-off rivals Brighton 3-1 to

:16:50. > :16:52.move into 5th spot. Ian Evatt with Blackpool's first, Kevin Phillips

:16:52. > :16:55.netting the other two. And Rochdale's relegation worries eased,

:16:55. > :16:58.slightly, but at the expense of neighbours, Oldham. Latics' Reuben

:16:58. > :17:04.Reid's volley may have been goal of the game. But Michael Symes hat

:17:04. > :17:06.trick for 'Dale was unassailable in their 3-2 win.

:17:06. > :17:09.Macclesfield Town have wasted no time in replacing their manager

:17:09. > :17:12.Gary Simpson and have re-appointed former boss Brian Horton. Simpson

:17:13. > :17:17.leaves the league 2 side without a win in 16 matches after their

:17:17. > :17:23.latest defeat to Dagenham on the weekend. Horton who was recently

:17:23. > :17:27.Preston's assistant manager re- joins the side he left in 2006.

:17:27. > :17:30.And on the subject of sackings and one of our biggest rugby league

:17:30. > :17:33.clubs took a very big decision today. St Helens are looking for a

:17:33. > :17:37.new coach after dismissing Royce Simmons following the club's worst

:17:37. > :17:47.run of form for 23 years. But it has shocked many in the sport. Last

:17:47. > :17:52.season Simmons steered Saints to Super League's Grand Final. Just

:17:52. > :17:59.seven games into the season, he may have expected more time, but after

:17:59. > :18:05.four defeat in a row, the club have decided to his time is up. He has

:18:05. > :18:09.not been very successful, not a surprise. I am surprised, we don't

:18:09. > :18:13.wanted to go the way of soccer where people get sacked after four

:18:13. > :18:20.matches. You cannot win every game but I don't think they have ever

:18:20. > :18:24.played as bad as this. Saints fans are used to success, and with a new

:18:24. > :18:31.stadium expectations are higher than ever. I can understand the

:18:31. > :18:37.situation, a club like St Helens, in the run of form they are, worst

:18:37. > :18:42.for 20 years, in a new stadium, a new era, you have to do something.

:18:42. > :18:48.Nobody from the club was available for interview, the chairman is out

:18:48. > :18:52.of the country, but he released a says -- statement where he thanked

:18:52. > :18:56.the coach for his time, but he said it was better to act sooner rather

:18:56. > :19:05.than later. The have turned to another member of the staff to lead

:19:05. > :19:11.the team, the legendary former skipper alongside him. In Mike, you

:19:11. > :19:15.have a man who has nurtured many of these young lads, development to a

:19:15. > :19:21.fine art. Kieran is an old warhorse, he has been there and seen it and

:19:21. > :19:25.knows how to win. Nathan Brown is another name widely mentioned as a

:19:25. > :19:29.possible long-term replacement, but in the short term, the focus will

:19:29. > :19:33.be on restoring some needed focus to a team normally full of it.

:19:33. > :19:43.And you can see all the action from the weekend's Super League matches

:19:43. > :19:43.

:19:43. > :19:47.in the Super League Show on BBC One at 11:45pm tonight. Talking about

:19:47. > :19:51.sport relief. 50% of all the money you raise for Sport Relief is spent

:19:51. > :19:54.in the UK and in 2010 that meant 2.4 million was used to fund over

:19:54. > :19:56.300 projects right here in the North West. One of those projects

:19:56. > :19:59.is M13 in Ardwick in Manchester. Their project workers organise and

:19:59. > :20:09.run a competitive football club in an area where young people face

:20:09. > :20:11.

:20:11. > :20:15.high levels of unemployment, violent crime and gang activity.

:20:15. > :20:25.And - as a result of their good work - over 300 13-25 year olds

:20:25. > :20:29.

:20:29. > :20:35.benefit directly from the money you give to Sport Relief. This was

:20:35. > :20:40.formed years ago, we work primarily on the streets. It is categorised

:20:40. > :20:44.as a poor area because of issues such as unemployment, low education

:20:44. > :20:51.and drug addiction. Gang involvement and incidence of

:20:51. > :20:56.violent crime to. I was involved, not so much with gangs but I was

:20:56. > :21:03.affiliated with them. The area suffered from gang culture. Many

:21:03. > :21:06.people were suffering. I knew somebody who was murdered, and that

:21:06. > :21:16.challenged us to think about how life was and what we wanted from

:21:16. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:21.life. Walk-in so we are a bit warmer, please. Reaching young

:21:21. > :21:30.people through football is of massive benefit, we work with

:21:30. > :21:34.people from neighbouring areas and they come together as one team.

:21:34. > :21:40.certain players might have come in initially and had issues in regards

:21:40. > :21:48.to temperaments, timekeeping. The coach is trying to challenge us,

:21:48. > :21:54.and, we feel in a place where we are accepted. We have been stable,

:21:54. > :21:58.consistent, a place of belonging over a long period of time. We have

:21:58. > :22:03.been there when they have fallen and there to pick themselves up.

:22:03. > :22:09.Really, it has gone to the places where other organisations might not

:22:09. > :22:12.have been able to access. That is why we have made a difference.

:22:12. > :22:15.If that's inspired you to do your bit for this year's appeal then log

:22:15. > :22:25.on to bbc.co.uk/sportrelief and sign up to do a sport relief mile

:22:25. > :22:27.

:22:27. > :22:30.next Sunday - that's March 25th. And I'll be joining Graham Liver on

:22:30. > :22:40.his tandem later in the week as he cycles from the Olympic Park in

:22:40. > :22:45.

:22:45. > :22:55.London to Preston to raise money for local Sport Relief projects.

:22:55. > :22:58.

:22:58. > :23:02.Log on now to bbc.co.uk/lancashire to find out how to donate. We will

:23:03. > :23:06.see you and Ted Robbins. She is one of the most successful

:23:06. > :23:09.musicians in the world who can pull audiences in the thousands. But

:23:10. > :23:12.Annie Lennox chose to perform an intimate gig in front of just 50
