:00:20. > :00:26.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson - and

:00:26. > :00:36.Kate Simms. Our top story. The honeymoon nightmare. An inquest

:00:36. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:42.hears of Ian Redmond's final moments before a shark killed him.

:00:42. > :00:52.One of pop superstars - we are joined in the studio by JLS, ahead

:00:52. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:10.of a sell-out weekend in Manchester. Ian Redmond was an intelligent and

:01:10. > :01:12.

:01:12. > :01:15.caring, successful man. He was a software developer from Lancashire

:01:15. > :01:19.- who married his wife Gemma at a church in Wigan last August. Just

:01:19. > :01:21.ten days later he was killed in a shark attack while still on

:01:21. > :01:24.honeymoon. Today an inquest into his death heard there were no

:01:24. > :01:28.warning on signs on the Seychelles beach where Ian died. But there'd

:01:28. > :01:36.been no shark attacks on the island for 50 years before last August.

:01:36. > :01:40.Andy Gill reports. Sir, We have a major problem with the sound on

:01:40. > :01:50.that report. We will get a fix as soon as we can and come back to

:01:50. > :02:01.

:02:01. > :02:07.that story. Before that - our next story. Police identify a woman

:02:07. > :02:15.found dead on a busy commuter route - according to CCTV images, he

:02:15. > :02:20.picks up her shoes and possibly her hand back. There possibly damaged -

:02:20. > :02:24.- the badly damaged body was found yesterday, she had been hit by a

:02:24. > :02:31.number of vehicles. We hope by releasing energy of this man, that

:02:31. > :02:35.he will come forward or people will recognise him. -- the image of this

:02:35. > :02:40.man. We are keen to speak to him and find out the whereabouts of the

:02:40. > :02:45.shoes and handbag. Police say it is possible the items were taking in

:02:45. > :02:51.good faith, but they want them back, especially the hand back because

:02:51. > :02:55.they are struggling to identify the woman. They Asian woman was wearing

:02:55. > :03:01.a saffron and Siri and gold bangles. A truck driver arrested on

:03:01. > :03:11.suspicion of murder was arrested -- was released without charge.

:03:11. > :03:13.

:03:13. > :03:16.Another man remains in custody. 600 jobs at BAE Systems in

:03:16. > :03:19.Lancashire have been secured - after the company won a 446 million

:03:19. > :03:21.pound contract to support Europe's fleet of Typhoon jets. Workers at

:03:21. > :03:24.the Warton and Samlesbury sites will provide engineering support

:03:24. > :03:28.for the next five years. The Liverpool celebrity hairdresser

:03:28. > :03:32.Herbert Howe has pulled out of the race to be the city's first elected

:03:32. > :03:42.mayor. His announcement comes just a day after he launched his

:03:42. > :03:46.

:03:46. > :03:49.election campaign - ahead of the vote on May the third. The funeral

:03:49. > :03:51.of Vinny Derrick has taken place in Altrincham - nearly nine years

:03:51. > :03:54.after his disappearance. His remains were found earlier this

:03:54. > :03:58.year. Vinny had a night out in Manchester in 2003 and was never

:03:58. > :04:00.seen alive again. His family still don't know for certain how he died.

:04:00. > :04:04.Stuart Flinders reports. It's eight and a half years since

:04:04. > :04:07.Vinny Derrick's family last saw him alive. Today, they paid their final

:04:07. > :04:17.respects. Amongst those present, Vinny's brother, who travelled from

:04:17. > :04:20.

:04:20. > :04:25.Australia to be here. But many of their questions remain unanswered.

:04:25. > :04:29.What did happen to him? His body was found beside the road, a post-

:04:29. > :04:32.mortem revealed he had a number of bones. The police believe he may

:04:32. > :04:35.have been involved in a road accident, but their investigation

:04:35. > :04:37.is still going on. In August 2003 Vinny Derrick

:04:37. > :04:41.disappeared after a night out with workmates in Manchester. It's

:04:41. > :04:44.thought he got out of a taxi at Handforth Dean on the A34. Until

:04:44. > :04:52.his body was found in January of this year, nobody could be certain

:04:52. > :04:58.he hadn't chosen to disappear, abandoning his wife and child.

:04:58. > :05:03.never believed that he had chosen to disappear. Eight years on, I

:05:03. > :05:05.really thought it would be easier to deal with but it is not.

:05:05. > :05:13.At the funeral, a request for donations to the charity, Missing

:05:13. > :05:18.People. We're helping them to know and accept that you really is dead,

:05:19. > :05:22.after all that has gone on for him. The nightmare of waiting for over

:05:22. > :05:24.each years, to accept the reality of that, as well as talking about

:05:24. > :05:27.the past and what they have been through.

:05:27. > :05:35.Vinny Derrick's family will now be looking to an inquest to answer

:05:35. > :05:39.questions they've lived with for nearly nine years. We were trying

:05:39. > :05:42.take you back to our top story now which is the inquest into the death

:05:43. > :05:48.of Ian Redmond. The inquest heard it was an

:05:48. > :05:53.accidental death. Even red in's widow, here in the

:05:53. > :05:57.centre, arrives at the inquest into the death of her husband. She told

:05:57. > :06:02.they inquest about how they met at Manchester University and the

:06:02. > :06:12.wedding last August. After they married, they went is seashells on

:06:12. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:18.honeymoon. After snorkelling, Ian was attacked by a shark.

:06:18. > :06:24.I am sorry, we seem to be having a real problem with that report. We

:06:24. > :06:29.will try return to it later in the programme. Our sincere apologies.

:06:29. > :06:33.His family say he was treated like a caged animal - their teenage son

:06:33. > :06:38.was locked in a padded and to control his behaviour. It happened

:06:39. > :06:43.in the Beech Tree School under a care package put together by Wigan

:06:44. > :06:50.council. The action has been ruled unlawful. What is the background to

:06:50. > :06:56.this story? For legal reasons we can only refer to the boy as C. He

:06:56. > :07:02.suffers from severe autism. Wigging council said he should be treated

:07:02. > :07:07.at the beech tree special school in Preston. -- went in. Initially, his

:07:07. > :07:11.family say his care was very good but then he spent increasing

:07:11. > :07:21.amounts of time in a blue ruin - a padded room where he was locked in

:07:21. > :07:26.alone, sometimes for hours at a time. At least a caged animal has

:07:26. > :07:32.run to roam, and he is with other animals. He was in solitary in that

:07:32. > :07:39.run. It is so difficult as a mother, because I would think what else can

:07:39. > :07:43.I do as a mother to help him? door would bang endlessly as my

:07:43. > :07:49.brother try to fight his way out. You would hear the walls banging

:07:49. > :07:57.and she knew it was my brother, hitting his head on the wall. --

:07:57. > :08:01.you knew. How did the boy's health deteriorates? The school is run by

:08:01. > :08:05.a charity and we spoke to them earlier today, they have that

:08:06. > :08:11.knowledge serious mistakes were made and changes have been made.

:08:11. > :08:18.But the idea he displayed was very unpredictable and volatile, violent

:08:18. > :08:26.and aggressive. -- their behaviour. It took us way beyond our

:08:26. > :08:30.experience and expertise. Last year a judge said that, under the Human

:08:30. > :08:34.Rights Act, the boy had been treated and lawfully. They told us

:08:34. > :08:39.the initial package of care was approved by the family and the

:08:39. > :08:44.courts and they have now agreed compensation. The family say that

:08:44. > :08:49.under the new care he has, he has come on leaps and bounce and his

:08:49. > :08:53.health has improved but they're still waiting for an apology from

:08:53. > :08:56.the council and the charity. Thank you very much.

:08:56. > :08:59.Still to come on North West Tonight. She's being hailed as the possible

:08:59. > :09:01.savour of the High Street. Today the Government accepted the

:09:01. > :09:04.recommendations of Mary Portas to kick-start our ailing shopping

:09:04. > :09:08.centres. It's also the deadline for towns bidding for a share of 10

:09:08. > :09:15.million and a bit of direct advice from Mary herself. One of those is

:09:15. > :09:19.Crewe - from where Laura Yates joins us.

:09:19. > :09:29.Take a look. And you can easily see why it could do with a bit of

:09:29. > :09:35.

:09:35. > :09:41.stardust sprinkled over it .. Boarded up shops. The council think

:09:41. > :09:47.she can fix the old high street. They want to turn things around

:09:47. > :09:52.with her ideas. We will be here in Crewe are all here, because this is

:09:52. > :09:57.our economy town. We had been meeting people at all week and

:09:57. > :10:07.tonight we meet the Darlington sisters who run a thriving family

:10:07. > :10:13.

:10:13. > :10:16.business, but can they take it global? It's a company with a 2

:10:16. > :10:19.million pound turnover. More than 70 jams, chutneys and sauces. Sold

:10:19. > :10:23.all over the UK. But it all began thirty years ago on the family farm

:10:23. > :10:30.with a few cracked eggs. Mum and dad had a glut of eggs on

:10:30. > :10:33.the farm so dad suggested mum make lemon curd tried to sell it. Within

:10:33. > :10:36.a week it had sold out and she wanted some more.

:10:36. > :10:39.From humble beginnings then to much greater things. Mrs Darlington

:10:39. > :10:42.joined by one daughter and then the other.

:10:42. > :10:50.From the farmhouse kitchen to a purpose built factory too. Although

:10:50. > :10:54.many old faces remain. Collecting eggs at the farm to

:10:54. > :10:58.start with and then marion asked me would I like to start in the

:10:58. > :11:02.kitchen with her and I thought I'll give it a go and here I am thirty

:11:02. > :11:06.years later still here. Business is good. But growth has

:11:06. > :11:11.slowed. The cost of ingredients is going up all the time. Sugar by

:11:11. > :11:16.almost 50% in the last six months. Fruit and glass too.

:11:16. > :11:26.And then there are the local shops. I think the biggest thing we're

:11:26. > :11:27.

:11:27. > :11:32.finding is that the high street is struggling. So many cuxtomers shut

:11:32. > :11:34.their doors for the final time which is very sad. So the family

:11:35. > :11:37.has one eye on something else. A bigger, international market. To

:11:37. > :11:39.try and break into. For us export is the big

:11:40. > :11:45.opportunity right now there are some really exciting things going

:11:45. > :11:48.on we're talking to the US to China and in Canada.

:11:48. > :11:58.Can the Darlingtons take their jams abroad? How will they deal with

:11:58. > :12:00.

:12:00. > :12:03.rising prices and a struggling high street? We'll be back to see soon.

:12:03. > :12:07.Much more on all the people we've introduced you to and Crewe in the

:12:07. > :12:10.weeks and months to come. And as always please do get in touch if

:12:10. > :12:17.you live or work in Crewe or if you have something to say about your

:12:17. > :12:27.high street - usual addresses - high street - usual addresses -

:12:27. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:30.high street - usual addresses - email, facebook or twitter.

:12:30. > :12:35.Sport now Tony and first up, something for every fan of whatever

:12:35. > :12:38.team to celebrate. Absolutely. Ever since Bolton's Fabrice Muamba

:12:38. > :12:43.collapsed on the pitch at White Hart Lane almost two weeks ago

:12:43. > :12:49.football has been praying for him. Well, his recovery appears to be

:12:49. > :12:52.continuing. Have a look at this. It's a picture of the midfielder in

:12:52. > :12:55.hospital tweeted by his fiancee Shauna who said, '"Fab wanted me to

:12:55. > :13:02.post this pic for you all and to also say thank you for such

:13:02. > :13:06.overwhelming support." It's a brilliant picture and the

:13:06. > :13:09.doctor treating him says the recovery is 'miraculous'. Well,

:13:09. > :13:11.when you listen to what happened you can understand why. He was

:13:11. > :13:14.technically 'dead' for 78 minutes and received 15 defibrillator

:13:14. > :13:21.shocks, 12 in the ambulance on the way to hospital. So it's worth

:13:21. > :13:27.another look at him today. Bolton have said even if he doesn't play

:13:27. > :13:33.football again the club will find a role for him. Certainly seems like

:13:33. > :13:35.we're going to get a happy ending. So well done, Muamba, I'm not sure

:13:36. > :13:39.Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is as inclined to be as

:13:40. > :13:42.nice about his star striker Sergio Aguero today. He's going to miss

:13:42. > :13:47.Saturday's crucial Premier League game against Sunderland with what's

:13:47. > :13:50.described as a 'stupid' foot injury. The Argentine has scored 24 goals

:13:50. > :14:00.in 41 games but Mancini - who won't reveal exactly what caused the

:14:00. > :14:08.problem - does concede it's not the player's fault. It is a stupid

:14:08. > :14:15.injury, but not his fault. It is a stupid injury but, he cannot play

:14:15. > :14:17.with his injury for a one-week or 10 days.

:14:17. > :14:27.Top-of the-table Manchester United don't play until Monday at

:14:27. > :14:31.

:14:31. > :14:33.Blackburn. And just to finish off the football news for now the FA

:14:33. > :14:37.Cup semi-final between Everton and Liverpool at Wembley on April the

:14:37. > :14:40.14th will kick off at 1230. Cricket now and Lancashire have posted the

:14:40. > :14:42.biggest losses of any first class County - almost four million pounds

:14:42. > :14:44.for 2011. The County Champions say it's not a

:14:44. > :14:47.surprise after the long running battle for planning permission to

:14:47. > :14:50.redevelop Old Trafford and are confident their financial situation

:14:50. > :14:54.will improve considerably with the sale of tickets for the 2013 Ashes

:14:54. > :14:58.test. Two big ties in Super League this

:14:58. > :15:00.evening. Wigan travel to the City of Salford Stadium to play the City

:15:00. > :15:04.Reds, with both sides looking to bounce back after defeats last

:15:04. > :15:07.weekend. And it's a sell-out at top of the table Warrington for their

:15:07. > :15:14.game with St Helens - who have struggled this season, but hope to

:15:14. > :15:19.build on last weekend's win over Leeds. It is very exciting, these

:15:19. > :15:23.are the big games you want to be involved in. We're coming up

:15:23. > :15:28.against Warrington who had been very consistent. It will be a big

:15:28. > :15:31.test for us. We are great football team and individually, we play good

:15:31. > :15:33.rugby. BBC Radio Merseyside has full

:15:34. > :15:39.commentary of that match from 7.30pm tonight. Wigan's game with

:15:39. > :15:42.Salford can be heard on BBC Radio Manchester.

:15:42. > :15:46.This man will be keeping an eye on that game. St Helen's boxer Martin

:15:46. > :15:49.Murray is a Saints fan and says he only has himself to blame after his

:15:49. > :15:51.latest chance to try and win a world title fell through. The 29

:15:51. > :15:54.year old British middleweight champion was forced to withdraw

:15:54. > :15:57.from a clash with Julio Cesar Chavez Junior after his application

:15:57. > :16:07.for a visa to enter the United States was delayed by his criminal

:16:07. > :16:12.past. Here's Stuart Pollitt. His career might be going places, but

:16:12. > :16:19.he is not. He cannot get an American visa in time to fight the

:16:19. > :16:26.champion. This is because of his past criminal convictions. I was

:16:26. > :16:34.gutted. It is a massive chance for me. To fight him in his own back

:16:34. > :16:40.yard, boxing is all about the chances. I am gutted it that I

:16:40. > :16:43.cannot get to the fight. He has lost his chance because of nasty

:16:43. > :16:48.fight outside the ring minus four spells in prison when he was

:16:48. > :16:54.younger have come back to haunt him. Just fighting, and being a young

:16:55. > :16:59.kid on the street, it was my own fault. I am not disappointed with

:16:59. > :17:04.anyone or anything other than myself. He has put his past behind

:17:04. > :17:13.him and has credited boxing with helping him to it. He is accredited

:17:13. > :17:17.youth worker now and a family man. In seems like a lifetime ago, to be

:17:17. > :17:22.honest. I never had these children then, they have turned my life

:17:22. > :17:26.around. He is hoping that change will be enough to persuade the

:17:26. > :17:31.American authorities to allow him to continue his career across the

:17:31. > :17:41.Atlantic. For now however, he must keep training and hope for a fight

:17:41. > :17:42.

:17:42. > :17:49.closer to home. That is it for the sport now. Thank

:17:50. > :17:53.you very much. The weekend weather with Dianne in

:17:53. > :17:56.a moment - as well as JLS here in the studio. But first, all this

:17:56. > :17:59.week we've been bringing you a musical look at life in Hattersley

:17:59. > :18:08.- through the eyes of the local residents. Our final feature

:18:08. > :18:13.focuses on the battle to keep the residents' centre going. The

:18:13. > :18:19.community centre opened in the late 1960s and has always been that the

:18:19. > :18:22.beating heart of our community. We heard in 2007 that the local

:18:22. > :18:27.council had decided that the building was beginning to show its

:18:27. > :18:33.age and had become too expensive to run. They decided to knock it down

:18:33. > :18:36.and replace it with a privately run building on the edge of the estate.

:18:36. > :18:40.We planned to move into the building in autumn this year but

:18:40. > :18:50.are still waiting for details about how much residents and local groups

:18:50. > :19:06.

:19:06. > :19:15.will have to pay to use the new facilities. # Going to miss this

:19:15. > :19:25.place when they close the doors, And the musical theme continues.

:19:25. > :19:57.

:19:57. > :20:07.With every blink another memory... # It's so much more than just a

:20:07. > :20:10.

:20:10. > :20:20.building. # It's a collection of our lives. # The sum of years and

:20:20. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:41.friendship. # I hope it's heart will survive. # Everything moves on

:20:41. > :20:51.and bricks and mortar crumble. # Don't be scared of change, we'll

:20:51. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :21:03.make things work. # We'll start again. # People here are strong, we

:21:03. > :21:40.

:21:40. > :21:44.carry on. # But we'll miss this The shutter has come down on our

:21:44. > :21:54.seas from Hattersley. At least the equipment work that time. From

:21:54. > :21:58.

:21:58. > :22:01.They are, you may know, JLS - one of Britain's biggest selling bands.

:22:01. > :22:05.Right now they're getting ready to take to the stage at the Manchester

:22:05. > :22:09.Arena for the first of three dates in the city. It's been a busy few

:22:09. > :22:12.months for the boys - who shot to fame as runners-up on X-Factor in

:22:12. > :22:22.2008. But they popped-in to see us earlier - to tell us how they're

:22:22. > :22:29.feeling ahead of tonight's gig. Very excited - Manchester is always

:22:29. > :22:35.a good crowd. For as, building up to the big gigs, it is a massive

:22:35. > :22:38.achievement. Thousands of people. You have just done London, which is

:22:38. > :22:47.huge, day notice the difference when you play in different parts of

:22:47. > :22:53.the country? Definitely. We used to think he was quieter in London, but

:22:53. > :23:03.its Even in Manchester, you do not get the noise they get hear

:23:03. > :23:03.

:23:03. > :23:10.anywhere else. In terms of planning as well, how the fans will get here.

:23:10. > :23:20.They will try to get on the tour bus. They will get to the hotel.

:23:20. > :23:30.

:23:30. > :23:36.Normally, we run out the back, but they're just there. You had been so

:23:36. > :23:43.busy, this is your third album and she did Sport Relief, what was that

:23:43. > :23:49.like? Fantastic. Sport Relief is an amazing charity. We went to Uganda

:23:49. > :23:58.last year to see how the money raised is saving lives in Africa.

:23:58. > :24:04.Also in the UK as well. That is why we want to set up our own charity.

:24:04. > :24:09.We want to help where we can. We know we are in a place of power and

:24:09. > :24:14.influence and want to use that in a positive way. You have a couple of
