:00:05. > :00:08.Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Roger Johnson and

:00:08. > :00:12.Annabel Tiffin. Our top story... Forgiven by his victim, but not the

:00:12. > :00:17.law - a man is jailed indefinitely for an unprovoked knife attack on a

:00:17. > :00:21.pensioner. I said it and I meant it, I forgive

:00:21. > :00:24.him. I won't forget. David Walters stabbed Maria

:00:24. > :00:26.Morrison six times in a frenzied attack after rowing with his

:00:26. > :00:28.girlfriend. Also tonight... 3D theatre - the country's first

:00:28. > :00:36.operation using new visual technology was done in Manchester

:00:36. > :00:39.today. A wide Adi travelling at high speed

:00:39. > :00:42.along Chester Road, he has moved across the road.

:00:42. > :00:46.Deadly roads - police plan a crack down after traffic deaths rise

:00:46. > :00:49.sharply in Greater Manchester. And may the financial force be with

:00:49. > :00:59.you - the sci-fi film makers raising funds to finish their

:00:59. > :01:05.

:01:05. > :01:09.latest feature. Also tonight, Stuart Flinders has

:01:09. > :01:15.all the sports news live from Ewood Park ahead of a big night in the

:01:15. > :01:23.Premier League. Yes, it's all about pressure

:01:23. > :01:27.tonight. There is pressure on Manchester United, pressure on

:01:27. > :01:31.Blackburn. 10 Lee Byrne -- is Kenny Dalglish under pressure at

:01:31. > :01:34.Liverpool? Join me later. Maria Morrison was simply waiting

:01:34. > :01:37.for a bus when she became the victim of a frenzied knife attack.

:01:37. > :01:42.The 75-year-old was stabbed six times by David Walters who screamed

:01:43. > :01:46.at her, "Die, die!" A judge today praised the bravery and indomitable

:01:46. > :01:50.spirit of the pensioner as he jailed her attacker indefinitely.

:01:50. > :01:54.But for Maria, the terror of the attack just won't go away. Stuart

:01:54. > :02:04.Politt reports. Maria Morrison went out to catch

:02:04. > :02:14.her normal bus. Minutes later, she was fighting for her life. I was

:02:14. > :02:14.

:02:14. > :02:18.sitting at the. -- at the bus stop. He smashed and my face and I

:02:18. > :02:21.covered my face with my hand. needed plastic surgery after

:02:21. > :02:24.injuries to her lip, hand, shoulder, elbow and abdomen. The attacker

:02:24. > :02:26.David Walters later told his girlfriend on Facebook that he had

:02:26. > :02:32.committed a murder. He hadn't, thanks mainly to Mrs Morrison's

:02:32. > :02:38.bravery, but she's still paying the price for what happened.

:02:38. > :02:41.independence is gone. I can't open a tin, anything. I can be given to

:02:41. > :02:50.joke, I can't do washing up or anything. I can't even have a bath

:02:50. > :02:54.on my own. What it never it -- what has never explained why he attacked

:02:54. > :02:56.Mrs Morrison. It was this CCTV footage taken moments before the

:02:56. > :02:59.attack which caught Walters. An officer watching the camera noticed

:02:59. > :03:02.Walters spat on the ground just before he attacked Mrs Morrison

:03:02. > :03:05.beyond the view of the cameras. The officer radioed colleagues who came

:03:05. > :03:08.here and retrieved a sample of the spit. Police matched it to Walters'

:03:08. > :03:12.DNA and he was arrested. Today, the 23-year-old was sentenced to a

:03:12. > :03:15.minimum of seven years in jail, but will only be released when he is no

:03:15. > :03:18.longer considered a danger to the public. Walters' family left court

:03:18. > :03:21.with their heads covered and bowed. In contrast the judge, Andrew

:03:21. > :03:23.Gilbart, said he had the highest admiration for how Mrs Morrison had

:03:24. > :03:30.acted. A devout Catholic, she has forgiven her attacker. It is hard

:03:30. > :03:34.to say. I forgive him, I said did and I made that. I will not forget

:03:34. > :03:41.what has gone on. Although the physical scars are beginning to

:03:42. > :03:44.fade, Mrs Morrison knows the mental ones will take much longer.

:03:44. > :03:50.The country's first fully 3D keyhole surgery has taken place at

:03:50. > :03:52.a North West hospital. Using special glasses and state-of-the-

:03:52. > :03:57.art cameras, surgeons at the Manchester Royal Infirmary carried

:03:57. > :04:04.out the operation for prostate cancer. They say the new techniques

:04:04. > :04:11.give them more control. Other hospitals are said to be watching

:04:11. > :04:14.the results with interest. The surgical team here are for the

:04:14. > :04:17.first time using 3D technology and robotics to carry out keyhole

:04:17. > :04:20.surgery. The operation is performed as normal, but the 3D cameras and

:04:20. > :04:30.glasses give the surgeons and other staff here a clearer way of seeing

:04:30. > :04:31.

:04:31. > :04:35.inside the body. With the rotation of the instrument and depth

:04:35. > :04:38.perception, they enhance each other to make surgery more precise and

:04:38. > :04:42.that is what we are looking at today. The technology works using

:04:42. > :04:47.two small cameras to get the 3D image in the same way that you get

:04:47. > :04:49.a 3D picture for TV. It is really helping us with the depth, the

:04:49. > :04:57.rotation of the instruments is really helping us in the right

:04:57. > :05:03.position. The operation is being trialed in Manchester and if

:05:03. > :05:06.successful could be rolled out across the country. It allows us

:05:06. > :05:12.more accurately to preserve nerves, to preserve the muscles, to

:05:12. > :05:19.hopefully get a better result with a better engine -- with a better

:05:19. > :05:22.cancelled -- cancer result. It has to be affordable to the NHS. John

:05:22. > :05:26.Green is the first to have this type of surgery for treatment for

:05:26. > :05:29.cancer, which he was diagnosed with earlier this year. Something that

:05:29. > :05:39.actually gives the surgeon more opportunities, because that of the

:05:39. > :05:44.

:05:44. > :05:49.3D camera, a-quiver with salt, then definitely. -- quicker as well,

:05:49. > :05:52.then definitely. The hospital hopes to carry out more of these trial

:05:52. > :05:54.procedures and the technology being used could help shape the future of

:05:54. > :05:58.all different types of keyhole surgery.

:05:58. > :06:00.A 12-year-old boy's been left trapped in his home after thieves

:06:00. > :06:03.stole his wheelchair. Jake Wynne's specially adapted wheelchair was

:06:03. > :06:07.taken from his front garden in Northwich on Saturday and it's not

:06:07. > :06:11.been seen since. He has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and can only

:06:12. > :06:21.walk a few yards unaided. His mother says his Easter holidays

:06:22. > :06:23.

:06:24. > :06:28.have been ruined and is appealing to those who stole it to return it.

:06:28. > :06:32.It is disgusting for a disabled child. He does not look disabled

:06:32. > :06:36.but he has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Just leave it in the

:06:36. > :06:41.garden, we just want his chair back. A 17-year-old who drowned off the

:06:42. > :06:45.Blackpool coast on Friday has been named as David Sagar. He was swept

:06:45. > :06:48.into the sea off the lower walk near Gynn Square at high tide. The

:06:48. > :06:51.inshore lifeboat was launched, but the teenager was dead when he was

:06:51. > :06:54.recovered from the water. Four men from Bolton, Rais Atcha,

:06:54. > :06:58.Fahim Kola, Mohammed Asif Khan and Barber Khan, have been jailed for a

:06:58. > :07:01.total of 42 years. The men pleaded guilty to their part in conspiring

:07:01. > :07:04.to commit a series of armed robberies. This incredible CCTV

:07:04. > :07:06.footage shows the moment the gang were caught robbing a jewellers in

:07:06. > :07:09.Burnley during which 30,000 of traditional Asian jewellery was

:07:09. > :07:12.stolen. An agreement has been reached to

:07:12. > :07:15.finally transform Buxton's historic Crescent into a spa hotel. The

:07:15. > :07:20.town's natural baths will form part of the 35 million revamp, creating

:07:20. > :07:29.the first original spa in nearly a century. The Crescent and nearby

:07:29. > :07:35.Pump Room will be refurbished to create a five star hotel.

:07:35. > :07:37.It looks like it will be great. You will probably need a big wallets to

:07:37. > :07:39.go there! If you're a regular motorist you'll

:07:39. > :07:43.have seen examples of bad driving almost anywhere. Speeding, drivers

:07:43. > :07:46.using mobile phones, not wearing seat belts etc. Well, the police

:07:46. > :07:48.believe that's all contributing to an increase in the number of fatal

:07:49. > :07:51.accidents on our roads. In Greater Manchester, they've just launched a

:07:52. > :07:59.new campaign to target the drivers putting others at risk. Our Chief

:07:59. > :08:04.Reporter Dave Guest has been out on patrol with the traffic police.

:08:04. > :08:10.John Williams is on the lookout for speeding drivers and it is not long

:08:10. > :08:13.before he spots one. A white Audi is travelling on long if the

:08:13. > :08:20.Chester Road at half speed -- high speed. He has just moved across the

:08:20. > :08:25.road. You were a bit quick. The need to be mindful. This driver

:08:25. > :08:29.gets off with a warning. John can only hope in future he thinks more

:08:29. > :08:32.carefully. John and his colleagues are currently mounting a major

:08:32. > :08:36.campaign to try and cut the number of accidents and deaths in the

:08:36. > :08:43.roads. The number of deaths on Greater Manchester's roads would up

:08:43. > :08:48.work -- 42%. 75 people lost their lives in 2011, compared to 53 the

:08:48. > :08:52.previous year. The police are at a loss to explain why, but they said

:08:52. > :08:55.they are determined to make it -- make sure it does not happen again.

:08:55. > :09:01.They campaign is to remind people of the dangers of speeding, using

:09:01. > :09:05.mobiles and not win a seat belt. John has just spotted a driver not

:09:05. > :09:11.wearing a seatbelt. He has made no attempt to put it on. We will have

:09:12. > :09:16.a word with him. He was not happy. He did not understand why he had to

:09:17. > :09:25.wear a seatbelt. I pointed out we are trying to reduce the people

:09:25. > :09:30.injured on the roads. He was given a fixed penalty.

:09:30. > :09:38.Camera cars like this aim to cash drivers wearing seatbelts or using

:09:38. > :09:42.mobile phones while striving. -- catch drivers not wearing seatbelts.

:09:42. > :09:47.The police said this is not about hassling innocent motorists but

:09:47. > :09:51.educating them and maybe even saving their lives.

:09:51. > :09:54.A Lymm rugby union player who broke his neck during a match at the end

:09:54. > :09:57.of February says he hopes his ordeal won't put others off the

:09:57. > :09:59.sport. Alex Bennett, a former England and Saracens player,

:09:59. > :10:04.underwent eight hours of surgery after clashing heads during the

:10:04. > :10:14.game against Sandal. He's still receiving treatment and says he's

:10:14. > :10:16.

:10:16. > :10:19.determined to walk again. Any movement, however small, is a

:10:19. > :10:25.sign of the progress that Alex Bennett is making. He was left with

:10:25. > :10:31.an injured spine after a clash of heads in a game at the end of

:10:31. > :10:36.February. I knew I was going to get het just as I got the ball, and I

:10:36. > :10:44.did. I think my head went down and back and then I was lying on the

:10:44. > :10:49.floor, physically not being able to feel anything below my neck.

:10:49. > :10:54.former rugby player had eight hours of emergency surgery. According to

:10:54. > :10:58.the RFU, last season, there were 746 injuries that Premiership clubs,

:10:58. > :11:05.a 16% increase on the previous year. That, he said, should not put

:11:05. > :11:10.anyone off, including his rugby- playing son. It is his choice and I

:11:10. > :11:14.hope he wants to stay in the game. His family say the support of the

:11:14. > :11:24.club and the sport has given them stride. They're so much out of his

:11:24. > :11:27.control but the way he approaches everything just inspires us all.

:11:27. > :11:37.genuinely believe I will walk again and I will take the advice of

:11:37. > :11:41.everybody here and work as hard as I can.

:11:41. > :11:42.It goes without saying that we wish Alex all the best.

:11:42. > :11:45.Still to come on North West Tonight...

:11:45. > :11:50.Remembering Titanic - a survivor's descendents prepare to visit the

:11:50. > :12:00.spot where she sank. And Kenny's crisis - Liverpool lose

:12:00. > :12:04.

:12:04. > :12:07.yet again and their keeper gets banned for the FA Cup semi-final.

:12:07. > :12:10.Sport coming up in a moment. The Cheshire descendents of a man

:12:10. > :12:12.who survived the sinking of the Titainic are retracing the voyage

:12:12. > :12:16.to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the disaster.

:12:16. > :12:21.William Wright was one of the 705 survivors. Now, three of his great-

:12:21. > :12:31.granddaughters are sailing to the exact spot for a memorial service.

:12:31. > :12:36.

:12:36. > :12:38.Kate Simms went to meet them. A log book and the Telegraph,

:12:38. > :12:45.William Wright's great granddaughters know little about

:12:45. > :12:49.him save for his role on what was the most infamous of ships. As far

:12:49. > :12:57.as we know, he was the wish you would to the stewards. We thought

:12:57. > :13:02.he was the toilet cleaner but we don't know. What happened on the

:13:02. > :13:08.night of April 1519 12 has been reinterpreted many times. -- kibble

:13:08. > :13:13.15, 1912. William Wright's testimony has been recorded. It was,

:13:13. > :13:20.he said, the blackest of nights. said it was a very cold night, like

:13:20. > :13:25.being in an iceberg. He also described here -- hearing the cries

:13:25. > :13:30.of the other passengers in the seat and that he never wished to go

:13:30. > :13:33.through that again. Now armed with the two scraps they have of their

:13:34. > :13:38.great-grandfather's life, the sisters will embark on their own

:13:38. > :13:48.voyage aboard a modern day cruise liner with other descendants of the

:13:48. > :13:49.

:13:49. > :13:54.Titanic's crew and passengers. will lay everything arrests.

:13:54. > :13:58.will be a complete circle for us, won't it? It will finish her

:13:58. > :14:02.journey. The sisters have no picture of their great-grandfather.

:14:02. > :14:12.They are hoping to meet someone who may have them put a face to the

:14:12. > :14:12.

:14:12. > :14:17.name they know so well. Loads more about the Titanic earned its

:14:17. > :14:23.anniversary on North West Tonight in the coming weeks. If you want is

:14:23. > :14:29.the more, you can go to the BBC News side.

:14:29. > :14:32.There is loads of interesting stuff on there.

:14:32. > :14:35.Now, sport, and Manchester City are in danger of throwing away their

:14:35. > :14:38.chance of winning the Premier League title. Manchester United

:14:38. > :14:48.could take advantage tonight. They play Blackburn at Ewood park.

:14:48. > :14:53.

:14:53. > :14:56.Stuart Flinders is there. A big night for both teams?

:14:56. > :15:02.Blackburn are under pressure with Bolton, Wigan and QPR winning at

:15:02. > :15:07.the bottom of the league. But talk about pressure, what about

:15:07. > :15:10.Manchester City? 3-1 down at home to Sunderland, they win a free kick

:15:10. > :15:13.and Mario Balotelli and Aleksander Kolarov have a very public argument

:15:14. > :15:16.over who should take it. Balotelli made up for it by scoring two goals

:15:17. > :15:25.in a three-three draw. But Roberto Mancini told the BBC afterwards he

:15:25. > :15:27.can't trust Balotelli. I wonder if he will still be there next season.

:15:27. > :15:33.Advantage Manchester United, but Alex Ferguson's expecting a tough

:15:33. > :15:42.game here tonight. The game with Blackburn over the years has always

:15:42. > :15:50.been a difficult match for the local derby feeling at times it's a

:15:50. > :15:57.bit feisty. -- get a bit feisty. Last season we were lucky enough to

:15:57. > :16:00.come back and when. We expect a very difficult game.

:16:00. > :16:06.Here's a sobering thought - if the Premier League season had started

:16:06. > :16:09.on January 1st, Liverpool would be in the bottom three. Yesterday's

:16:09. > :16:12.defeat at Newcastle was the Reds' 6th in seven Premier League matches,

:16:12. > :16:22.with the glory of last months Carling Cup win a fast fading

:16:22. > :16:25.memory. Where now for Liverpool? Another defeat to confirm the

:16:25. > :16:27.club's worst league run since 1954. All in all, a day to forget for

:16:27. > :16:30.Kenny Dalglish on Tyneside. Not surprisingly, today's newspapers

:16:30. > :16:34.wouldn't have made the most pleasant reading for the club or

:16:34. > :16:38.its fans. Rarely has a managerial appointment seemed to fit the bill

:16:38. > :16:43.as much as Kenny Dalglish's return last year did. Unpopular manager

:16:43. > :16:53.Roy Hodgson out, club legend in, feel-good factor back. Or at least

:16:53. > :16:55.

:16:55. > :16:58.it was. The optimism is starting to wane. They started well enough

:16:58. > :17:01.yesterday but against his old club, Andy Carroll blew the chance to

:17:01. > :17:05.make it 1-0, and was booked for diving. He could have put us in

:17:05. > :17:09.front but he made a stupid mistake. Instead it was Papis Cisse who

:17:09. > :17:12.opened the scoring, and then made it two in the second half, before

:17:12. > :17:20.Carroll made clear to his Manager just how he felt about being

:17:20. > :17:23.substituted. He has disappeared straight down the tunnel... That

:17:23. > :17:26.was totally disrespectful. To make things even worse, Liverpool will

:17:26. > :17:29.be without Goalkeeper Pepe Reina for the all Merseyside FA Cup semi

:17:29. > :17:31.final against Everton, after reacting to Newcastle's James Perch.

:17:31. > :17:39.For the moment at least, King Kenny's third coming isn't going to

:17:39. > :17:45.plan. There is no point in feeling sorry for ourselves. We have got to

:17:45. > :17:52.stick together. We trust that we have won to get it right and we

:17:52. > :17:56.have got a better chance. Just wait for Kenny and he would get it right.

:17:56. > :18:01.I think they are trying to get rid of him. One thing's certain, though

:18:01. > :18:04.- his side needs to rediscover the winning feeling quickly.

:18:04. > :18:07.Worrying times for Liverpool. We've talked about what tonight's

:18:07. > :18:16.game here means to United, but the last time these two teams met,

:18:16. > :18:19.Blackburn were the winners and it definitely gave them a lift.

:18:19. > :18:28.They've lost just four of their last ten Premier League games and

:18:28. > :18:35.now sit just above the relegation zone. With the exception of the

:18:35. > :18:42.Bolton game and the Sunderland game, we are positive and we are playing

:18:42. > :18:44.good stuff and we have to give back a matter of a form. -- on that type

:18:44. > :18:47.of form. Results elsewhere at the weekend

:18:47. > :18:50.could hardly have been worse for Blackburn. Wins for both Bolton and

:18:50. > :18:59.Wigan, but both teams made heavy Wigan, but both teams made heavy

:18:59. > :19:03.weather of it. What a save! Three wins on the trot

:19:03. > :19:09.for the trotters but for an hour, the other Wanderers were well on

:19:09. > :19:18.top. Alton Road this storm and came back from one Doran with three

:19:18. > :19:22.goals in a frenetic final half-hour to win. -- Bolton stormed back.

:19:22. > :19:31.Wigan have scored fewer goals at home than any other Premier League

:19:31. > :19:35.side and you could see why against Stoke. They got it right eventually,

:19:35. > :19:42.winning 2-0. They are a point behind Bolton. One place you will

:19:42. > :19:46.not find sympathy for Liverpool's problems is Goodison Park. Just two

:19:46. > :19:52.defeats in their last 19 and this win over West Brom puts them in 7th

:19:52. > :19:55.above Liverpool. Eddie Howe reckons his team have the best strikers in

:19:55. > :20:02.the Championship and who is arguing after a day put five past

:20:02. > :20:05.Portsmouth? There was still time for a hat-trick at 53 minutes. The

:20:05. > :20:11.Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale has confirmed his team's miner and

:20:11. > :20:16.tactics were leaked to the opposition by his own players

:20:16. > :20:25.before the match in Sheffield -- against Sheffield Wednesday and he

:20:25. > :20:31.says it came without Mannus. It is no way to call forward.

:20:31. > :20:35.Very secured a win against Tranmere. Berry and I have points -- five

:20:35. > :20:44.points above the relegation zone. Well done to Blackpool as well - 3-

:20:44. > :20:47.0 winners away to Championship leaders, Southampton. More on that

:20:47. > :20:50.in Late Kick Off tonight. And the show also celebrates Sir Tom
