:00:03. > :00:05.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson and

:00:05. > :00:11.Ranvir Singh. Our top story: A suspended jail sentence for

:00:11. > :00:16.causing the death of her own baby. A court hears how the baby girl was

:00:16. > :00:18.left in a front garden wrapped in a shawl. A court hears how the mother

:00:18. > :00:21.was put under enormous cultural and psychological stress. Also on

:00:21. > :00:24.tonight's programme: The long road to recovery leads

:00:24. > :00:34.north. Fabrice Muamba gets ready for the move to a hospital nearer

:00:34. > :00:34.

:00:34. > :00:44.Can he do it again? All eyes on Ballabriggs on the eve of the Grand

:00:44. > :00:49.

:00:49. > :00:53.National. He is in great shape. He is doing really well.

:00:53. > :01:03.And how this man survived the sinking of the Titanic to open his

:01:03. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:16.And as well as the racing, it's Ladies Day at Aintree. Dianne is

:01:16. > :01:23.there with Tony. Good evening. A warm welcome to the

:01:23. > :01:29.dying embers of Ladies' Day where 53,500 punters came through the

:01:29. > :01:37.doors earlier on for a great day's racing and fun. They saved the

:01:37. > :01:45.bookies always win, but this lot ain't for that not happen to them.

:01:45. > :01:48.And if Ballabriggs can do it tomorrow, it will be fantastic.

:01:48. > :01:51.Join us later. A mother who concealed the birth

:01:51. > :01:55.and death of her baby daughter has been spared jail. Fatima Ali left

:01:55. > :01:57.the body of her infant in a garden in Bury, then went to work as

:01:57. > :02:00.normal. A court heard she'd been under enormous cultural,

:02:00. > :02:03.psychological and physical stress at the time. Bolton Crown Court was

:02:03. > :02:07.told we'll never know why the baby died, but she hadn't been subjected

:02:07. > :02:17.to any form of abuse. Handing down a suspended prison sentence the

:02:17. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:22.judge said the tragedy of what Ali had done would be with her forever.

:02:22. > :02:28.Fatima Ali left Court this afternoon with her face covered.

:02:28. > :02:38.She is the woman on the left. The 26-year-old admitted concealing the

:02:38. > :02:39.

:02:39. > :02:42.death of her child. The discovery of the body caused widespread shock.

:02:42. > :02:48.You can seep through the front bedroom window a bundle in the

:02:48. > :02:58.garden. We found out it was a child who had been left there have

:02:58. > :03:00.

:03:00. > :03:06.wrapped up. Police tried to find her mother and it ended less than a

:03:06. > :03:10.quarter of a mile from here. At Bolton Crown Court she admitted

:03:10. > :03:17.cruelty as she did not seek medical attention for the child when it was

:03:17. > :03:22.born. She had managed to give the pregnancy secret from her family

:03:22. > :03:27.and had given birth alone in her bedroom. The child had lived for

:03:27. > :03:31.about two hours. What caused it's there remains a mystery, although

:03:31. > :03:36.there were no signs of ill- treatment. The following morning,

:03:37. > :03:46.she went to a work as possible, depositing the body and the front

:03:47. > :04:04.

:04:04. > :04:10.garden of a friend's. Andrew Noctor The judge said that what Fatima Ali

:04:10. > :04:13.had done well be with her for ever. Now for some news that just a few

:04:13. > :04:16.weeks ago seemed utterly impossible. We're delighted to report that

:04:16. > :04:19.Bolton's Fabrice Muamba is expected to leave hospital in the next few

:04:19. > :04:22.days. It seems like a miracle. The Bolton star's heart stopped beating

:04:22. > :04:29.for 78 minutes and stunned fans watched in horror as a desperate

:04:29. > :04:39.scenes unfolded on the football field. Now incredibly, doctors say

:04:39. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:47.he'll soon be well enough to come This was the moment that thousands

:04:47. > :04:52.of football fans watched, stunned by what they were seen. Bolton

:04:52. > :04:57.player Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac

:04:57. > :05:03.arrest. For 17 minutes he was clinically dead. Many feared the

:05:03. > :05:13.worst, but what happened was a miracle for everybody. Everyone has

:05:13. > :05:13.

:05:13. > :05:22.been following this story. Now he is on his way back north and we

:05:22. > :05:27.will hopefully see him playing again. Muamba spent four weeks at

:05:27. > :05:33.the London chest Hospital and to say. You have these cake made

:05:33. > :05:37.specially for the staff. He now has a different relator pacemaker but

:05:37. > :05:42.should detect any further problems and has now been moved to a

:05:42. > :05:47.hospital in Cheadle. Doctors hope he will be able to go home in a few

:05:47. > :05:50.days. Other news now. Ryanair says the Government's

:05:50. > :05:53.increase in Air Passenger Duty in the last Budget has forced it to

:05:53. > :05:56.cut flights from Liverpool's John Lennon Airport. Travellers to Italy

:05:56. > :05:58.are affected the most after the budget airline announced it was

:05:58. > :06:01.axing services to Milan, Rome, and Rimini throughout the summer,

:06:01. > :06:04.leaving just Pisa. Flights to Almeria in Spain have also been

:06:04. > :06:07.dropped. A woman from Lancashire had to be

:06:07. > :06:12.rescued from a cliffside after becoming trapped by the incoming

:06:12. > :06:16.tide in Cornwall. Stacey Hayes from Leyland and three others had to

:06:16. > :06:19.cling to rocks as they became cut off by the tide in Green Bay.

:06:19. > :06:25.Coastguards nearby heard screams and alerted a Royal Navy rescue

:06:25. > :06:28.helicopter. One of the candidates running for

:06:28. > :06:31.Mayor of Liverpool says he would halve the salary if elected,

:06:31. > :06:33.although it's still not been decided how much the mayor will be

:06:33. > :06:43.paid. Adam Heatherington, who's running for the UK Independence

:06:43. > :06:45.

:06:45. > :06:51.Party, also says he would protect local services. If elected, I it

:06:51. > :06:59.would stop the local cuts and I would bring much-needed jobs to the

:06:59. > :07:04.area and I would retrain the unemployed. There is a for at least

:07:04. > :07:07.of all the candidates on our website.

:07:07. > :07:10.Merseyside is bracing itself for an invasion of racing fans for

:07:10. > :07:13.tomorrow's Grand National. Every year it seems the world's most

:07:13. > :07:18.famous race throws up a remarkable story. Last year, it was

:07:18. > :07:21.Ballabriggs - winning for the son of Ginger McCain. And the horse is

:07:21. > :07:24.well fancied to triumph again to become the first since Ginger's Red

:07:24. > :07:30.Rum to win successive Nationals. It would be another Aintree fairytale,

:07:30. > :07:40.coming just months after Ginger McCain's death. Tony's live at

:07:40. > :07:44.

:07:45. > :07:49.Aintree tonight to assess the form Thank you. As you know, the focus

:07:49. > :07:54.today has been very much on the ladies, but tomorrow, it switches

:07:54. > :07:59.to the Grand National. The big question is can Ballabriggs do it

:07:59. > :08:07.again? If it did, it would emulate the great Red Rum from the 1970s.

:08:07. > :08:12.It is a family affair worthy of Hollywood, but the big problem is,

:08:12. > :08:17.the handicappers have put 11 stone nine on horseback's back and some

:08:17. > :08:22.think it may make the race impossible. Let's have a look at

:08:22. > :08:28.Ballabriggs's chances. If the course at Aintree had eight

:08:28. > :08:34.roof, it would come off if Ballabriggs were to repeat his win

:08:34. > :08:41.of 2011. Owned by Trevor Hemmings, of Ballabriggs is the romantic

:08:41. > :08:48.fluttered. He is trained by Donald McCain, whose father won two

:08:48. > :08:55.successive Grand Nationals with Red Rum. Can he matches that? He is in

:08:55. > :09:00.great shape and has been active all year. It is a tough task, but he

:09:00. > :09:10.can do it. The handicappers have not been kind, so what are the

:09:10. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:20.odds? Who did make a howler at Valentines, but he is an each-way

:09:20. > :09:25.shot. It will be hard for him to win. He is carrying more weight,

:09:25. > :09:31.but can he do it? Some horses are put off when they come back to

:09:31. > :09:34.Aintree for the second visit. Ginger McCain died last year and an

:09:34. > :09:43.after a Ballabriggs's when he was in tears. If his son does it

:09:43. > :09:53.tomorrow, it is a fair bet 70,000 racegoers will do the same.

:09:53. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:00.We will be back with Tony and die and shortly. -- Diane Shaubli. --

:10:00. > :10:03.Shaubli. Today we come to the end of our

:10:03. > :10:07.Titanic trail around the North West. Looking at some of the places and

:10:07. > :10:10.stories that link the doomed ship to our region. We've had the heroes,

:10:10. > :10:14.the villains and the victims. Tonight though we end on a happier

:10:15. > :10:18.note, looking at the story of a Welcome to Cheetham Hill where for

:10:18. > :10:24.100 years people from all around the world have flocked to start a

:10:24. > :10:33.new life. Today's Titanic story is about one such man and 100 years on,

:10:33. > :10:37.his story is still very much alive. People around here have been

:10:37. > :10:42.calling this place Titanic's for nearly a century because the man

:10:42. > :10:47.who owned it was the man who got away. It was such a massive story

:10:47. > :10:57.at the time that people would literally. At him as he was walking

:10:57. > :11:01.

:11:01. > :11:06.down the street. Joseph, fleeing persecution, was dreaming of a new

:11:06. > :11:11.life in America. He'd ended up on the Titanic after being dumped in

:11:11. > :11:20.Glasgow by an unscrupulous captain who told him it was New York. A

:11:20. > :11:25.common scam at the time. As the ship went down, or Joseph found

:11:25. > :11:31.himself in one of the last lifeboats to leave the ship, an

:11:31. > :11:36.escape that intrigues Titanic enthusiast. Joseph's story was

:11:37. > :11:42.amazing. For a lead a third of the third-class passengers survived.

:11:42. > :11:46.Yet here we are, this poor Jewish immigrants, made it into the last

:11:46. > :11:52.lifeboat to leave the Titanic and he finds himself borrowing for his

:11:52. > :11:57.life next to the owner of the Titanic. The rich and the poor in

:11:57. > :12:02.the same boat together. I after being rescued by the Carpathia, he

:12:02. > :12:07.ended up in New York, but could not settle. He was brought back to

:12:07. > :12:13.Manchester by relatives. He needed to make a living and decided to set

:12:13. > :12:17.up a deli, just like the ones he had seen in Manhattan. He prospered,

:12:17. > :12:23.but the disaster had left its mark. He never really spoke about it. He

:12:23. > :12:29.would wake up in the middle of the night screaming because he was

:12:29. > :12:33.totally traumatised. You getting into a lifeboat with acanthus sides

:12:33. > :12:41.and it is freezing cold and you are hearing people drowning and

:12:41. > :12:46.screaming. On what I can understand, he did say that you heard the

:12:46. > :12:52.gurgling and the noise of the ship going down and then deathly silence.

:12:52. > :13:02.Joseph died in 1956, but his deli sells on into the second century, a

:13:02. > :13:09.living, breathing Titanic survivor. It is a good heritage. I got out of

:13:09. > :13:19.a lot of trouble in school because people were impressed my dad was on

:13:19. > :13:32.

:13:32. > :13:38.Amazing. Yes, an incredible story. And don't you for your e-mails.

:13:38. > :13:43.Lots of you have been responding to the series with stories of your own.

:13:43. > :13:46.We could not cover everything, but we hope you got a lot out of it and

:13:47. > :13:49.enjoyed it. We've already heard about

:13:49. > :13:52.Ballabriggs's chances in tomorrow's Grand National. But the race is

:13:52. > :13:55.just half of a massive Merseyside sporting weekend - with Everton and

:13:55. > :13:57.Liverpool facing each other at Wembley tomorrow lunchtime in the

:13:57. > :14:00.FA Cup semi-final. Many fans have already set off for

:14:00. > :14:04.London to watch the game. But as they depart, thousands of others

:14:04. > :14:13.are flocking to Aintree for the big race and we can rejoin Tony, who's

:14:13. > :14:21.live there with all the sport. What a weekend for Merseyside. It

:14:21. > :14:31.has been another bumper Ladies' Day. Despite some heavy rain, the women

:14:31. > :14:34.managed to hang onto their suntans. Away from that, there are talks

:14:34. > :14:37.about animal safety. The death at last year's race of

:14:37. > :14:39.two horses cast a shadow over the event. So this year, organisers

:14:39. > :14:42.have introduced restrictions on horses allowed to take part and

:14:42. > :14:45.fences have been made safer. Stuart Flinders reports on how changing

:14:45. > :14:48.attitudes to animal welfare have forced Aintree into making safety a

:14:48. > :14:52.priority. It is the day the rest of the world looks in on racing and

:14:52. > :15:01.what it saw last year was the death of to animals. The Grand National

:15:01. > :15:04.had to change. We don't want a repeat of last year, but it is the

:15:04. > :15:12.race and there may be accidents. Hour job is to make it as safe as

:15:12. > :15:17.we can. Attitudes to animal welfare have hardened. In 1954, 20 courses

:15:17. > :15:23.fail to complete the course and four died. The news will

:15:24. > :15:27.commentator was unmoved. gentleman who came unstuck a

:15:27. > :15:33.sorting themselves out. They had been trying to make Becher's Brook

:15:33. > :15:39.saved. The drop on the landing site has been reduced by four inches.

:15:39. > :15:44.They are trying to make sure that horses who are not up to we do not

:15:44. > :15:53.get to take part. The minimum age of a horse has been raised from six

:15:53. > :15:58.to seven years old and every 40 C on Saturday would have finished at

:15:58. > :16:06.least 4th in a similar race. fences were all right, but you have

:16:06. > :16:11.to go with the times. Nobody likes to see horses get hurt. Without

:16:11. > :16:19.some risk, it would not be the Grand National, but a organisers of

:16:19. > :16:29.the brace say that safety is their priority.

:16:29. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:34.Joining me now his former Grand National winner Nick Fitzgerald.

:16:34. > :16:40.Can the National ever be saved? There will always be an element of

:16:40. > :16:45.risk. They have tried to eradicate any real chance of a problem

:16:46. > :16:50.recurring with a horse. They have changed Becher's Brook. It was for

:16:50. > :16:54.me the ball and was like jumping off a cliff. They have even do it

:16:54. > :16:59.out so it becomes a level playing field. They are trying to make it

:16:59. > :17:03.safe for the time, but the problem is, if you make it to say, you

:17:03. > :17:07.detract from the racing. Let us not forget, this is the world's

:17:07. > :17:13.greatest horse race. Throughout history it has been the race

:17:13. > :17:17.everybody wants to win. I wanted to be the safest it can be, but let it

:17:17. > :17:27.still be a fair test. Talking of winners, can Ballabriggs do it

:17:27. > :17:27.

:17:27. > :17:32.again? He has got a strong chance. They could be history being made

:17:32. > :17:39.tomorrow. A lady could win the National tomorrow. One of odds?

:17:39. > :17:46.think it is 20-1. It will happen. These lady jockeys are getting

:17:46. > :17:56.better and better. And the reason you are here? The is the legends

:17:56. > :18:00.race tomorrow. We do have some proper legends racing as well.

:18:00. > :18:10.to speak to you. Let us hope that every man and every woman and every

:18:10. > :18:37.

:18:37. > :18:47.Lots of sport this weekend. Liverpool 1 to win the FA Cup as

:18:47. > :19:17.

:19:17. > :19:22.much as Everton. It has divided the city. -- Liverpool want. Families

:19:22. > :19:32.like this one are divided. With an extended family of half blues and

:19:32. > :19:39.

:19:39. > :19:45.half reds, Derby Day is not a day to be on the losing side. I think

:19:45. > :19:55.it's going to be Kenny Dalglish. The formed the players are in, the

:19:55. > :19:55.

:19:55. > :20:04.results, it is great. As they did last in 1989 and before

:20:04. > :20:11.that 1986. And despite the rivalry, for most

:20:11. > :20:21.it's good humoured. There is more bands of these days, but it is

:20:21. > :20:24.always in good humour. It will be great, whoever wins.

:20:24. > :20:27.And with a resurgent Everton and a Liverpool team with the cup winning

:20:27. > :20:36.habit, this is one derby that whoever you're rooting for, is

:20:36. > :20:46.particularly tough to call. I can't wait. BBC Radio Merseyside has for

:20:46. > :20:49.coverage. The kick-off is at 1238. -- is at 12:30pm.

:20:49. > :20:52.It could be an historic night for Fleetwood Town tonight. The Cod

:20:52. > :20:55.Army could realise their dream of making it into the Football League

:20:55. > :20:58.if they can beat Lincoln at Highbury. Already with 102 points,

:20:58. > :21:08.it would cap an incredible season for Micky Mellon's side. Good luck

:21:08. > :21:08.

:21:08. > :21:13.to them. That is pretty much it from the sports desk. We will be

:21:13. > :21:17.back later with all the fashion news. Back to the studio.

:21:17. > :21:20.Well, Tony may have left his top hat and tails at home today, but

:21:20. > :21:23.Dianne was among the throngs of women showing off their finery, and

:21:23. > :21:32.she scrubs up pretty well herself, too. We can join her now in another

:21:32. > :21:37.part of the race course where she's talking top togs and high heels.

:21:37. > :21:42.That is exactly what this is all about. It is a well's greatest

:21:42. > :21:52.horse race, but it is also at the north-west's premier fashion race.

:21:52. > :21:54.

:21:54. > :22:02.Earlier, we were talking to a nurse he says there is a surge in Angkor

:22:02. > :22:07.related injuries because of the high heels. They have been doing a

:22:07. > :22:12.roaring trade in Danish pastries and champagne hair. So, it is about

:22:12. > :22:18.horses, high heels and beautiful hats. You know what they say, if

:22:19. > :22:23.you want to get ahead, get a hat. So where better to go and get your

:22:23. > :22:27.hat than a farm? What is the connection between this

:22:27. > :22:32.farm and Aintree? There is the odd horse, but there are also hands,

:22:32. > :22:39.lots and lots of them. What is the reaction from people when they get

:22:39. > :22:45.here? They are quite surprised when they come down but farm track and

:22:45. > :22:50.are greeted by a wet labrador. Helen started her business last

:22:50. > :23:00.year when she took over her husband's sniggering and filled it

:23:00. > :23:03.

:23:03. > :23:10.with all these haves. -- hats. There was not much discussion, she

:23:11. > :23:17.just told me. He did not really use the snooker table very much. Maybe

:23:17. > :23:25.Christmas. And when Tommy is not mucking out, he is mucking in,

:23:25. > :23:32.serving customers. The customers are quite glamourous. Some of the

:23:32. > :23:37.local farmers come in and have a look. This is quite a nice one. It

:23:38. > :23:44.is quite Audrey Hepburn. In a recent weeks, Helen has had a lot

:23:44. > :23:50.of customers, looking at their Ladies' Day options. Set it takes

:23:51. > :24:00.longer to choose the have done anything else? Yes, in my case.

:24:01. > :24:01.

:24:01. > :24:06.long as customers keep buying, the snooker cues will remain redundant.

:24:06. > :24:10.What you saw Lees in Stewart's story there, but let me introduce

:24:10. > :24:20.her properly. We cannot get too close because we keep on banging

:24:20. > :24:20.

:24:20. > :24:26.our heads. How much thought has gone into this whole outfit?

:24:26. > :24:31.weather has made me change my mind. It was originally a strapless dress,

:24:31. > :24:35.but the weather has changed. It is your first time at Aintree, even

:24:35. > :24:40.though you are local. Why did you come along today? I went to Ascot

:24:40. > :24:48.last year, which I thought was amazing, and I've always wanted to

:24:48. > :24:52.come to Aintree because I only lived 10 miles away. This year I

:24:52. > :24:57.decided to come. And you have pushed the boat out. You look

:24:57. > :25:06.fantastic. We know the girls put so much effort into Ladies' Day. How

:25:06. > :25:10.does it compare to Royal Ascot? Very similar. I was quite surprised,

:25:10. > :25:17.but in all honesty, it is all about fashion and it is nice to see

:25:17. > :25:21.ladies dressed up. It has been great. Well, you look wonderful and

:25:21. > :25:26.I am glad you enjoyed the day. Hopefully we'll see you next year.

:25:26. > :25:31.Weather Wise, I'm afraid it has not felt to warm. The temperatures have

:25:31. > :25:35.tailed off over the last couple of hours. If you are coming racing

:25:35. > :25:39.tomorrow, you will see there are more showers in the forecast and

:25:39. > :25:44.the temperatures like even more. Through the weekend, it is all

:25:44. > :25:50.about that North to north easterly air coming in. As we start next

:25:50. > :25:58.week, it becomes very unsettled and be showery conditions will go and

:25:58. > :26:04.it will become wet and windy. Tonight, temperatures falling down

:26:04. > :26:14.to zero fairly widely. We are going through quite a cold snap at the

:26:14. > :26:15.

:26:15. > :26:23.weekend. There will be a widespread frost. Tomorrow, a mixture of cloud

:26:23. > :26:32.and showers. You will notice, one or two wintry ones could be around

:26:32. > :26:38.over the Pennines. Showers could turn up anywhere and it will be

:26:38. > :26:42.quite cold. The wind will pick up during the day. It will feel more

:26:43. > :26:48.like January than the middle of April. Sunday doesn't look so bad,

:26:48. > :26:53.it should be a dry and quiet day. But Saturday night is cold and it

:26:53. > :27:02.will take a while for temperatures to recover. As we start next week,

:27:02. > :27:09.it will become unsettled. I have never known anything like it.
