:00:03. > :00:07.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson - and

:00:07. > :00:10.Annabel Tiffin. Our top story - as the owners of one dead horse say

:00:10. > :00:17.they won't be back, we ask what the future holds for the Grand National

:00:17. > :00:22.at Aintree. Why are our horses injured in the Grand National and

:00:22. > :00:26.can more be done to save them? I will be finding out. Can one of our

:00:26. > :00:29.most historic sporting spectacles survive? Also in the programme, the

:00:29. > :00:34.quest for a cure for Parkinson's, as four local hospitals take part

:00:34. > :00:44.in ground breaking research. The half a million pound Olympic

:00:44. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:53.artwork which should be lighting up Yes! The ecstasy and the agony as

:00:53. > :01:03.Liverpool pip Everton to a place in the Cup final. Absolutely a but the

:01:03. > :01:03.

:01:04. > :01:07.moon. I am gutted but we will take it on the gym. -- chin. And another

:01:07. > :01:17.fine mess. The new film lifting the lid on the early years of one of

:01:17. > :01:17.

:01:18. > :01:20.Good evening. The future of one of the region's big events is under

:01:20. > :01:24.renewed scrutiny tonight, after two horses died at the Grand National.

:01:24. > :01:27.One animal rights campaigner says the race should be banned. Major

:01:27. > :01:31.changes were made to the course before this year's National to make

:01:31. > :01:35.it safer. Now there's pressure to make yet more modifications to the

:01:35. > :01:39.world's greatest race. Stuart Flinders is at a centre for the

:01:39. > :01:45.treatment of former racehorses. This is the Thoroughbred

:01:45. > :01:49.Rehabilitation Centre just outside Lancaster. In a moment I'll be

:01:49. > :01:52.hearing whether more could be done to save horses injured in the big

:01:52. > :02:01.race. But first, calls for the Grand National to be made safer or

:02:01. > :02:04.There is life after racing. Here, thoroughbreads are patched up and

:02:04. > :02:10.prepared for a new world of the showjumping arena and the riding

:02:10. > :02:13.club. Injuries are one thing. But in front of millions of TV viewers

:02:13. > :02:18.on Saturday, two horses, According to Pete and Synchronised, died in

:02:18. > :02:28.the Grand National. The owners of According to Pete are clearly

:02:28. > :02:31.

:02:31. > :02:37.deeply upset. We wish that we still had him. We do! We will be gutted.

:02:37. > :02:42.There will never be another one like him. When you enter a horse

:02:42. > :02:50.again into the Grand National? not think I would, Rivett. It is

:02:50. > :02:54.too much. They were good horses. They had to be put down. Both

:02:54. > :02:57.horses fell at Bechers Brook. The drop on the landing side was

:02:57. > :03:02.reduced by four inches for this year's race, one of a number of

:03:02. > :03:07.changes made to protect horses. we have reduced it. We will see how

:03:07. > :03:10.the horses cope. It would appear they still have difficulty.

:03:10. > :03:15.pressure for more changes is on. But only an end to the National

:03:15. > :03:20.itself will satisfy one campaigner from Southport. The Grand National

:03:20. > :03:27.can never be made safe. The course will either run faster and land

:03:27. > :03:32.with more force or if you reduce the field, they will still charge

:03:32. > :03:42.along as fast as they can. There is only one way to deal with it and

:03:42. > :03:46.

:03:46. > :03:50.that is to ban it. Opinion in Liverpool today was mixed. It is

:03:50. > :03:56.part of Liverpool. It provides a lot of revenue and a lot of people

:03:56. > :04:02.look forward to it. We should look at the safety aspect. We have got

:04:02. > :04:07.about 40 horses running and it is organised chaos. We have to think

:04:07. > :04:09.about setting off on the race and I think it was a disgrace. In a

:04:09. > :04:19.statement, Aintree regretted the deaths and promised to look at ways

:04:19. > :04:21.

:04:21. > :04:29.This is a former racehorse and trainer. Why can they not be

:04:29. > :04:35.treated? Sometimes the injuries are very challenging. A broken leg can

:04:35. > :04:41.be like a threatening. They cannot be -- life threatening. They cannot

:04:41. > :04:49.be treated like you and me. But it is not simply about money?

:04:49. > :04:54.Absolutely not. A broken leg, the severity will be life ending.

:04:54. > :05:00.fair to put them through the Grand National? Organisers say that we

:05:00. > :05:09.will always have a brisk but is it worth the risk? It is a high risk

:05:09. > :05:14.sport. The industry are trying to make it safer for horses. Any

:05:14. > :05:20.amendment and any issues that they are dealing with with the Grand

:05:20. > :05:25.National can only be a good thing. How do we make it safer? We have

:05:25. > :05:29.heard a report saying that you cannot and it should be scrapped.

:05:29. > :05:36.We have to look at the number of horses starting the race. We have

:05:36. > :05:45.got about 40. We should perhaps reduce the number racing. Tell us a

:05:45. > :05:53.bit about this horse. He came to us in January from a syndicate. He

:05:53. > :05:58.raced 49 times. He won 59,000 worth of winning. And the future?

:05:58. > :06:08.We are going to work with him and find him a home as a nice, retired

:06:08. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:25.Thank you for your comments about this story. We hope to read some of

:06:25. > :06:25.

:06:25. > :06:26.Next, Parkinson's disease affects almost 130,000 people across the

:06:26. > :06:29.country. Symptoms including uncontrollable tremors, and

:06:29. > :06:32.difficulty moving, can make life a struggle for its sufferers. Now,

:06:32. > :06:35.four hospitals in the North West will play a major part in the

:06:35. > :06:45.biggest ever study into the disease. By tracking thousands of patients,

:06:45. > :06:48.

:06:48. > :06:52.experts hope to find better He has been living with Parkinson's

:06:52. > :06:56.disease for three years and has accepted the tremors, mood-swings

:06:56. > :07:03.and speech problems and at 26, he is understands what the future

:07:03. > :07:13.holds. I understand it is progressive. But you keep battling

:07:13. > :07:18.every day. Parkinson's UK is hoping to attract 3,000 sufferers and

:07:18. > :07:23.analyse blood changes and symptoms in a period of three years. It is

:07:24. > :07:29.understood that it is caused when nerve cells are killed off in the

:07:29. > :07:36.brain, leading to nervous system problems. But what is not known his

:07:36. > :07:40.wife. They are hoping to attract the system and identified markers,

:07:40. > :07:45.tides of protein which can help them identify Parkinson's disease

:07:45. > :07:49.earlier and give a better idea of how treatments are working.

:07:49. > :07:54.think this study will enable us to generate treatments and improved

:07:54. > :07:59.treatments for fighting disease in the next few years and ultimately

:07:59. > :08:05.identify a way of curing the condition in future. In the North

:08:05. > :08:11.West, specialist centres in these areas will collect vital

:08:11. > :08:17.information. It would be a lot better if we could find a cure are

:08:17. > :08:23.obviously and I could get back to work. I would like to be walking.

:08:23. > :08:28.It would improve their lifestyle and make it a lot better. Anybody

:08:28. > :08:32.that has developed symptoms in the next -- in the past few years are

:08:32. > :08:40.urged to come forward to take part in the study and make an enormous

:08:40. > :08:43.Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba has been discharged from

:08:43. > :08:46.hospital - less than a month after he suffered a cardiac arrest. The

:08:46. > :08:50.midfielder, who collapsed during an FA Cup tie against Tottenham in

:08:50. > :08:58.March, left The London Chest Hospital today. He will now be

:08:58. > :09:00.treated at a hospital in the north west. A man from Manchester accused

:09:00. > :09:05.of conspiring to murder soul singer Joss Stone will undergo mental

:09:05. > :09:12.health tests to see if he is fit to stand trial. 31 year-old Junior

:09:12. > :09:19.Bradshaw has been moved to a psychiatric unit in the north west.

:09:19. > :09:23.He is charged with conspiracy to murder, Rob and commit GBH. It is

:09:23. > :09:28.that time again. Campaigning has started for the local elections

:09:28. > :09:33.next fortnight. They have been taking place across much of the

:09:33. > :09:39.region and hundreds of councils have been contested. We have got an

:09:40. > :09:45.overdue. Councils are responsible for local services, road Services,

:09:45. > :09:52.bin collecting and social services. 26 out of 37 councils are holding

:09:52. > :10:01.elections. Labour controls the most at 16. The Tories, two Andy Liberal

:10:01. > :10:05.Democrats, just one. Seven are under no overall control. These are

:10:05. > :10:10.the important ones, no overall control. These Labour Party in

:10:10. > :10:17.particular thinks they can take some of them. Places like Burnley,

:10:17. > :10:24.surely, Pendle and Rossendale. These places might be very

:10:24. > :10:28.important by Mayfair. Last year, Labour victory nine councils and be

:10:28. > :10:34.able to focus on four targets, Pendle, Burnley, Chorley and

:10:34. > :10:39.Rossendale. The Conservatives lost four last year and this time they

:10:39. > :10:43.will be defending West Lancashire and Trafford. Labour control more

:10:43. > :10:48.than half the councils being contested. If they do equally well

:10:48. > :10:52.this year, they could get up to two-thirds. That is the extent of

:10:52. > :10:58.their dominance in the North West. For the Conservatives it is about

:10:58. > :11:03.to fence, hanging on to West Lancashire and Trafford. -- defence.

:11:03. > :11:09.What about the Liberal Democrats? 8 lost one-third of their seats after

:11:09. > :11:14.a disastrous performance. They have just one council, South Lakes. But

:11:14. > :11:20.they are strong in Burnley and Stockport. Armageddon for them at

:11:20. > :11:24.the last local elections and this is damage limitation. They lost 100

:11:24. > :11:30.councils in the North West and they are hoping to cut these losses.

:11:30. > :11:34.They might recapture Stockport but is unlikely. The North West forget

:11:34. > :11:39.their first elected city Mayor in Liverpool and Salford and

:11:39. > :11:46.Manchester hold a referendum to decide if they want one as well.

:11:46. > :11:51.The deadline is when state. We have a guide available online. -- the

:11:51. > :12:00.Debt Line ease when state. Registering is the only way to

:12:00. > :12:07.avoid disappointment. -- the Debt Line is on Wednesday. -- the limit

:12:07. > :12:15.is on Wednesday it. Coming up, spotting the big time will stop the

:12:15. > :12:25.local child --. The local child had legend. It was found to be very

:12:25. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:31.interesting with lots of colourful I absolutely love Stan Laurel! It's

:12:31. > :12:32.costing half a million pounds of public money and was supposed to be

:12:32. > :12:35.Birkenhead's landmark art commission to celebrate the

:12:35. > :12:38.Olympics, but more than four months after it should have been

:12:38. > :12:41.flickering in the sky, it's still not there. From December, a

:12:41. > :12:44.spinning column of cloud should have been seen over the Wirral

:12:44. > :12:47.waterfront as part of the Cultural Olympiad. But as Ian Haslam now

:12:47. > :12:54.reports, it might not even be installed in time for the Olympic

:12:54. > :12:58.Torch relay next month. A spectacular art installation

:12:58. > :13:05.projecting a spiral of steam into the sky that can be seen from 60

:13:05. > :13:10.miles away. At least, that is the idea. The reality is different.

:13:10. > :13:19.money could be going towards something that we need. Other

:13:19. > :13:26.things in the region need the money. This was supposed to be a compiling

:13:26. > :13:30.location, but the Civil Aviation Authority needs to test whether the

:13:31. > :13:34.installation would be a danger to planes. It is really exciting and

:13:34. > :13:37.will push forward our economic development. This delay is damaging

:13:37. > :13:46.to that. The Olympics has been a success in terms of delivering on

:13:46. > :13:50.time, but not this part farce on the Wirral. We tried to get answers

:13:50. > :13:59.from representatives on those behind the project. We were simply

:13:59. > :14:03.Local campaigners say this is not good enough. It is going ahead when

:14:03. > :14:06.there are cuts across the board. Obviously the tax payer and needs

:14:06. > :14:12.to see some return in a meaningful way for whatever investment is

:14:12. > :14:17.taken forward. If it does happen, then I am sure it will be very

:14:17. > :14:20.successful. The argument then would be perhaps that it ought to be not

:14:20. > :14:25.just a temporary installation but something that his continued for a

:14:25. > :14:35.more meaningful period of time. Which has happened with another

:14:35. > :14:35.

:14:35. > :14:40.waterside artwork on Merseyside, Antony Gormley's Another Place. It

:14:40. > :14:45.is not unusual for artistic projects of this scale to take time

:14:45. > :14:47.to develop, but the council so they are confident that the final stages

:14:48. > :14:57.of planning permission will be complete in the next couple of

:14:57. > :15:04.weeks. Watch this space! Tony is here with

:15:04. > :15:08.the sport, and there is lots to get through. Sir Alex Ferguson now

:15:08. > :15:10.admits Ashley Young was looking for a penalty when he took a theatrical

:15:10. > :15:19.fall during yesterday's 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

:15:19. > :15:25.Yes, that's right. Sir Alex was Sir Alex was adamant that it was a

:15:25. > :15:28.penalty, but he did say that Young "overdid it" when United were

:15:28. > :15:31.awarded that controversial penalty at Old Trafford yesterday. Last

:15:31. > :15:33.week Young was accused of diving to win a penalty during United's

:15:33. > :15:36.victory at QPR. Now look what happened just seven minutes into

:15:36. > :15:39.yesterday's game. Young makes contact with the left foot of Villa

:15:39. > :15:42.defender Ciaran Clarke and appears to throw himself to the ground.

:15:42. > :15:45.Rooney tucked away the penalty, but many people have accused Young of

:15:45. > :15:53.diving. Let's hear the reaction of Sir Alex. He actually went down

:15:53. > :15:57.quite easily, but defenders pay the price, and it was a penalty.

:15:57. > :16:01.Despite all that, United are again five points clear of Manchester

:16:01. > :16:09.City. And you could be forgiven for thinking the title race is over.

:16:09. > :16:16.Well, City manager Roberto Mancini says it is. But Carlos Tevez

:16:16. > :16:20.disagrees. Disagreeing with his manager again! He says of course

:16:20. > :16:23.City can win the title if they put pressure on United. Tevez scored a

:16:23. > :16:26.brilliant hat-trick in the 6-1 win at Norwich on Saturday. This was

:16:26. > :16:28.the best of the three, an unstoppable shot with an incredible

:16:28. > :16:31.swerve. As he completed his hat- trick, Tevez celebrated with a

:16:31. > :16:34.cheeky reference to the months he spent playing golf in Argentinia

:16:34. > :16:41.while refusing to play for City. After the game he gave a TV

:16:41. > :16:45.interview for the first time since his return. For the people, for the

:16:46. > :16:50.club, for the fans, for my colleagues, for Roberto, for me, we

:16:51. > :16:54.all went through some difficult times, but it is very important,

:16:54. > :16:57.that is where celebrated the where did, because I have my feet on the

:16:58. > :17:00.floor. After edging city neighbours

:17:00. > :17:03.Everton in their big FA Cup semifinal, Liverpool captain Steven

:17:03. > :17:06.Gerrard says his team now need to go on and win the competition.

:17:06. > :17:14.Kenny Dalglish's side of course already have the Carling Cup in the

:17:14. > :17:17.Anfield trophy cabinet. The Reds beat the Blues 2-1 on Saturday to

:17:17. > :17:20.set up a final against Chelsea next month. Richard Askam was at Wembley

:17:20. > :17:23.to see the highs and lows of an emotional afternoon.

:17:23. > :17:29.This was one Wembley triumph where there was no silverware to show off,

:17:29. > :17:38.but for many rains, it felt even better. I thought we would get beat

:17:38. > :17:42.today. Getting there! Before the match, the feeling was largely

:17:42. > :17:50.good-humoured, although with bragging rights at stake, both sets

:17:50. > :17:55.of fans had everything crossed that it would be their day. Scary.

:17:55. > :18:04.are a red and a blow, and you are married. What will it be like

:18:04. > :18:10.today? We might not be speaking. But for the Blues, defeat was

:18:10. > :18:20.particularly hard to take. I am gutted, but you just take it on the

:18:20. > :18:20.

:18:20. > :18:28.chin. Liverpool's equaliser came from mistake from a normally

:18:28. > :18:33.reliable team. The much-criticised Andy Carroll got the crucial goal.

:18:33. > :18:41.He missed a golden chance earlier on, that got this reaction. But he

:18:41. > :18:43.nodded in the winner, his 8th of the season. After one of the most

:18:43. > :18:50.anticipated Merseyside derbies in years, Everton are still waiting

:18:50. > :18:53.for that first trophy, but these Liverpool supporters will be back

:18:53. > :18:59.showing that once again, when it comes to the cup competitions, they

:18:59. > :19:05.have the winning knack. That gentleman might have to set

:19:05. > :19:11.off a bit early for the final! There will be a reduced train

:19:11. > :19:15.service from Virgin trains on the line Street to Euston services for

:19:15. > :19:19.the final. Three trains will leave before eight in the morning, and

:19:19. > :19:24.other trains will leave from Crewe, Chester and Manchester. So make

:19:24. > :19:27.sure you sort out your travel plans. Now, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez

:19:27. > :19:30.says his side can beat Arsenal at the Emirates tonight to move

:19:30. > :19:32.further away from the relegation zone. He says his team been lifted

:19:32. > :19:36.by recent wins against Manchester United and Liverpool. Regular

:19:36. > :19:38.updates on BBC Radio Manchester. Now to the country's newest

:19:38. > :19:42.football league club. Fleetwood have finally made it over the

:19:42. > :19:45.finishing line after nearest rivals Wrexham could only draw on Saturday.

:19:45. > :19:49.The promotion to League Two marks the latest step in a meteoric rise

:19:50. > :19:52.through the football pyramid. Stuart Pollitt reports.

:19:52. > :19:55.Today it's every inch the modern stadium, fit for the football

:19:55. > :20:00.league. But 15 years ago Fleetwood's ground, like the club

:20:00. > :20:04.itself, was on its knees - vandalised, with knee-high grass.

:20:05. > :20:14.In 2003 wealthy businessman Andy Pilley stepped in and spent big.

:20:15. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:20.Five promotions in seven years has followed. It is an unbelievable

:20:20. > :20:23.feeling. There is not many people in life whose big dream came true,

:20:23. > :20:30.and it has always been my big dream that I could eventually get them to

:20:30. > :20:36.the League. I know you don't like putting a figure on it, but his 10

:20:36. > :20:40.million miles away? Probably not miles away, no. It has been an

:20:40. > :20:43.expensive hobby. The years, this was the main reason for visitors to

:20:43. > :20:48.come to Fleetwood. But they are hoping now that the increased

:20:48. > :20:53.profile of the town's football team will attract even more visitors to

:20:53. > :20:57.the seaside town. There are plenty of spin-offs in all sorts of

:20:57. > :21:00.directions, employment and so on, and it is good for the town. He it

:21:00. > :21:08.is the biggest thing that has happened for a long time in

:21:08. > :21:12.Fleetwood. Brilliant for the town. It just seems to be really good at

:21:12. > :21:22.the moment. It the message from those in charge at Fleetwood is

:21:22. > :21:25.

:21:25. > :21:28.that they want to march a further still up the football ladder.

:21:28. > :21:31.Talking of the coast, Blackpool's Keith Southern and the former Bury,

:21:31. > :21:34.Burnley and Blackpool boss Stan Ternent are the studio guests

:21:34. > :21:37.tonight as Late Kick Off returns to BBC One at five past eleven. We've

:21:37. > :21:40.got reports from Rochdale and Preston as our guest reporter Andy

:21:40. > :21:43.Ritchie went along to Deepdale to take at look at how the Graham

:21:43. > :21:47.Westley era there is developing. We have tried to deal with the

:21:47. > :21:52.issues and get ourselves together, and you can see where we are at. We

:21:52. > :21:56.have put in a solid display against a side. We are progressing, we are

:21:56. > :21:59.not at the level where want to be at, but it is coming.

:21:59. > :22:02.Rugby League, and the draw for the fifth round of the Challenge Cup

:22:02. > :22:04.has thrown up some crackers. Warrington Wolves host Bradford.

:22:04. > :22:06.Salford also have an all-Super- League tie against Leeds. The

:22:06. > :22:09.holders Wigan travel to Featherstone, St Helens to Oldham.

:22:09. > :22:12.Swinton are drawn at Super League leaders Huddersfield and Leigh take

:22:12. > :22:15.on Halifax. Finally, congratulations to the

:22:15. > :22:19.four North West players nominated for the PFA's player of the year

:22:19. > :22:22.award. Three of them are from Manchester City - Sergio Aguerro,

:22:22. > :22:32.Joe Hart and David Silva. Wayne Rooney will be fighting United's

:22:32. > :22:32.

:22:32. > :22:36.corner. We shall see! Thank you, Tony. I bet you are a Laurel and

:22:36. > :22:40.Hardy fan. I love them. There have been many documentaries

:22:40. > :22:43.and books about the life of Stan Laurel, half of one of the biggest

:22:43. > :22:47.screen double acts alongside Oliver Hardy. But few if any have focussed

:22:47. > :22:53.upon Laurel's life growing up in the Cumbrian town of Ulverston. The

:22:53. > :23:02.producers of Stan's Childhood say that's a fine mess. And they want

:23:02. > :23:06.to put it right, as Mark Edwardson Laurel and Hardy never failed to

:23:06. > :23:16.bring the house down. Stan's Childhood looks at a lesser-known

:23:16. > :23:16.

:23:16. > :23:20.part of Laurel's life. He was quite a sickly child, and that is why his

:23:20. > :23:24.grandparents brought him up, because he was born in their house,

:23:24. > :23:28.and a lot of people thought he had been bought up in Bishop Auckland,

:23:28. > :23:31.but he hadn't, because he couldn't travel. Largely shot in and around

:23:31. > :23:34.Ulverston, scenes recreate a town familiar to the young Stan Laurel.

:23:34. > :23:37.The producers say it's a faithful portrayal - a playful young Stan

:23:37. > :23:47.with a skill for slapstick with many of the mannerisms that made

:23:47. > :23:47.

:23:47. > :23:53.him a Hollywood star. One of the scenes when he is with grande

:23:53. > :23:59.marque, he is pulling faces in the window and doing the iconic things

:23:59. > :24:06.with his hair, just little things like that but you can see. Here is

:24:06. > :24:11.another nice mess you've gotten me into! A lot of research went into

:24:11. > :24:16.it. It was found to be very interesting, and turned up a lot of

:24:16. > :24:19.colourful characters, as is shown in the film. The producers and most

:24:19. > :24:27.of the cast are from Wigan, and over the next few weeks its

:24:27. > :24:29.premiere will be held there. Another nice mess you have gotten

:24:29. > :24:35.me into! Mark Edwardson, BBC North West

:24:35. > :24:45.Tonight. A lot of people may disagree, but I

:24:45. > :24:46.

:24:46. > :24:51.think it's a boy thing. OK, to the Good evening. It has been fairly

:24:51. > :24:56.sunny through this morning and into this evening, but it is all about

:24:56. > :24:59.change. This week will be unsettled with a lot of rain. That is all

:24:59. > :25:06.courtesy of this area of low pressure dancing around above my

:25:06. > :25:14.head. It is going to bring that heavy rain tonight into tomorrow.

:25:14. > :25:20.It sticks with us for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Look at how

:25:20. > :25:23.the temperatures don't respond! 11 or 12 Celsius if we are lucky

:25:23. > :25:30.through the week, but I think most temperatures will stay in single

:25:30. > :25:35.figures. The cloud is already building. It is heavy and

:25:35. > :25:40.persistent overnight, bring very strong wind. The temperatures

:25:40. > :25:45.underneath the rain will stay well above freezing. That is good for

:25:45. > :25:54.our plants. Tomorrow, plenty of this. He will be needing cure our

:25:54. > :26:01.umbrellas. The breeze will continue to drive in showers. Lots of cloud

:26:01. > :26:07.around. You can see the strong wind driving the showers through, the

:26:07. > :26:12.April showers. In between, you will see some sunshine. Disappointing

:26:12. > :26:17.temperatures, eight or nine for most of the region. Then look at

:26:17. > :26:22.Wednesday. You can see it is not particularly warm, more showers.

:26:22. > :26:30.Thursday and Friday, a bit of a washout. Sunshine and showers for
