:00:02. > :00:07.Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Rachael Hodges and
:00:07. > :00:10.Roger Johnson. Our top story: Can there be closure for Winnie? 48
:00:10. > :00:17.years after her son went missing, will Ian Brady finally reveal where
:00:17. > :00:26.Keith Bennett's body is? He has got a venomous contempt for the
:00:26. > :00:30.authorities. I think we will see a twist. In the last hour that twist
:00:30. > :00:37.- the letter for Winnie was given back to Brady by the woman asked to
:00:38. > :00:47.take it to the outside world. We'll talk live to Winne Johnson's
:00:48. > :00:48.
:00:48. > :00:51.solicitor. Or a hundred years since they were executed, Pendle prepares
:00:51. > :00:59.a weekend commemoration for the victims of the most the Tories

:01:02. > :01:05.wherever she goes - Olympic medallist Beth Tweddle talks about
:01:05. > :01:15.life after bronze. And preparing for the feast after the fast -

:01:17. > :01:20.Muslims across the region count 48 years after her son went missing,
:01:20. > :01:26.will Winnie Johnson finally find out where her schoolboy son Keith
:01:26. > :01:28.is buried? Police tonight are investigating whether Moors
:01:28. > :01:36.murderer Ian Brady passed a letter to his mental health advocate,
:01:36. > :01:39.Jackie Powell, saying where the body was. She claimed it was to be
:01:39. > :01:43.given to Winnie Johnson after his death - but tonight she says she
:01:44. > :01:46.handed the letter back to Brady. Tonight we will be coming live from
:01:46. > :01:51.Ashworth psychiatric hospital on Merseyside, where Brady's cell has
:01:51. > :01:54.been searched. But first we'll go to Saddleworth Moor, still
:01:54. > :02:04.inextricably linked with the crimes committed there half a century ago,
:02:04. > :02:05.
:02:05. > :02:11.and Dave Guest. Yes, and these windswept and
:02:11. > :02:17.forlorn looking soft toys have been left ear in memory of Keith Bennett.
:02:17. > :02:23.-- here. Winnie Johnson visited this place many times. Now she is
:02:23. > :02:28.too ill. She has clung to the hope that one day she would discover
:02:29. > :02:33.where out there her son alive. She wanted to lay him to rest properly.
:02:33. > :02:38.The story of the Moors murders is one filled with twists and turns
:02:38. > :02:46.over the years. Today, yet another twist with news of that the bulls
:02:46. > :02:49.that letter -- of that so Balls letter. Police are treating this
:02:49. > :02:55.with caution. This could just be another mind game by this callous
:02:55. > :02:59.killer. The images are in grainy black and
:02:59. > :03:04.white. The memories are still crystal clear. Five youngsters,
:03:04. > :03:09.tortured and murdered by an evil pair whose names will be forever
:03:09. > :03:14.etched in Bremen -- British criminal history. Keith Bennett is
:03:14. > :03:21.the only victim whose body has never been found. It still lies out
:03:21. > :03:25.there somewhere. 25 years ago, Pauline Reade's body was also still
:03:25. > :03:33.out there. Then a Myra Hindley returns to the moors to help police
:03:33. > :03:41.to find it. At the time she was extremely co-operative. She did try
:03:41. > :03:46.our best to assist us. Hindley did find -- help them to find Pauline's
:03:46. > :03:50.body. Ian Brady went to the moors that same year but he was less co-
:03:50. > :03:58.operative. It was a day out for him. He did not assist us. For Winnie
:03:58. > :04:03.Johnson, the torture has gone on for nearly 50 years. Now Brady has
:04:03. > :04:07.held out the possibility of hope. And mental health advocate working
:04:07. > :04:11.within told a TV interviewer that Brady had handed her a sealed
:04:11. > :04:16.envelope addressed to Winnie Johnson and market not to be open
:04:16. > :04:21.until after his death. Jackie Powell says she told her that
:04:21. > :04:26.within that was the means of her possibly being able to rest. The
:04:26. > :04:30.interviewer asked what he meant by that. She said there was something
:04:30. > :04:36.within the letter that may help to find her son. Detectives have
:04:36. > :04:45.seized documents from her home and she was arrested on suspicion of
:04:46. > :04:50.preventing the burial. Anybody who knows these more as Knowles they
:04:50. > :04:56.are living thing. The road has altered slightly. The lay-bys have
:04:56. > :05:05.changed. And Winnie Johnson's solicitor scares the -- scares --
:05:06. > :05:10.shares that kept us in. We're not convinced. One of -- one would not
:05:10. > :05:15.wish to raise expectations at this stage until the police have
:05:15. > :05:20.completed their investigation. now, the moors will hold on to
:05:20. > :05:26.their grim secret. Tonight the question remains, does
:05:26. > :05:31.the latter exist? Is it back in the possession of the and Brady?
:05:31. > :05:35.Attention switching back from the moors to Ashworth hospital.
:05:35. > :05:45.Well we can go live now to Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside, and Nina
:05:45. > :05:45.
:05:45. > :05:52.Warhurst. The hospital treats patients with mental health issues.
:05:52. > :05:56.What would Jackie Powell's role had been? Anybody with mental health
:05:56. > :06:00.problems as serious as Ian Brady's is entitled to a mental health
:06:00. > :06:03.advocate. It is their role to advise the patients on their rights
:06:03. > :06:09.under the Human Rights Act. They are not allowed to withhold
:06:09. > :06:14.information from police. It appears Jackie Powell appears to have been
:06:14. > :06:21.given this letter when exit -- carrying out Carol as executioner
:06:21. > :06:25.of the Ian Brady's will. -- her role. She claims the latter was
:06:25. > :06:30.given back to Ian Brady at Ashworth hospital. Tonight there is mystery
:06:30. > :06:36.surrounded the whereabouts and the existence of that letter. We are no
:06:36. > :06:43.closer to solving the mystery of where Keith Bennett's body was left.
:06:43. > :06:46.Where are the remains of Keith Bennett? The little boy with a
:06:46. > :06:48.Beatles haircut, known as a daydreamer who could never
:06:48. > :06:51.concentrate at school. He disappeared on his way to his
:06:51. > :06:56.grandmother's, and since then his mother has been tortured, wondering
:06:56. > :07:02.where her son was left. I want him found before anything happens to me.
:07:02. > :07:06.I have got cancer and I do not know when I am going to die. I want
:07:06. > :07:09.Brady to know that I have got cancer. Marie McCourt is one of few
:07:09. > :07:12.women who truly know Winnie's hell. She has become a close friend 25
:07:12. > :07:22.years after her daughter Helen was murdered - her killer still won't
:07:22. > :07:22.
:07:23. > :07:30.reveal where her body was left. Helene is never, ever out of my
:07:30. > :07:34.mind. What would it mean to you? would mean everything. What drives
:07:34. > :07:39.a man to block the wishes of a dying woman? And why write the
:07:39. > :07:43.information down, knowing it could be discovered? I think he is coming
:07:43. > :07:48.towards the end of his life when he is going to meet his maker. I think
:07:48. > :07:52.he wants to come clean. There may be a bizarre twist. He has got a
:07:52. > :07:57.venomous contempt for the authorities. I think we will see a
:07:57. > :08:04.twist we do not expect. It is game- playing. He has not got the
:08:04. > :08:09.attention he wanted from his sanity trial. He is manipulating the media
:08:09. > :08:12.to get his needs met. Winnie Johnson has had her hopes raised
:08:12. > :08:22.before, and is tonight too poorly to say whether she now believes
:08:22. > :08:25.Keith's body will be found before she dies. I think it is fair to say
:08:25. > :08:30.that Ian Brady is seen as a very cruel and at times very
:08:30. > :08:37.manipulative man. There is a sense denied that we have been here
:08:37. > :08:40.before. There is a great deal of scepticism surrounding his letter.
:08:40. > :08:50.-- this letter. Joining us now is John Ainley, solicitor for Keith
:08:50. > :08:54.Bennett's mother, Winnie Johnson. We heard earlier in the package
:08:54. > :08:59.that you had not told Winnie. Is that it still the case? It is. She
:08:59. > :09:04.is not well enough to receive that information at the present time. I
:09:04. > :09:11.still have concerns about the validity of this story. I do not
:09:11. > :09:16.think it would be right to worry her at this time. Do you believe
:09:16. > :09:22.that this is something Brady would do, to reveal the location he has
:09:22. > :09:25.kept secret for all these years in a letter? It is possible. He may
:09:25. > :09:32.feel that would relieve his conscience to some extent. It is a
:09:32. > :09:35.little too late. It may have some valuable information. He may want
:09:35. > :09:42.it passed on after his death. When he has been ill for some time. She
:09:43. > :09:46.has got cancer. She is in a hospice. Had that information being
:09:46. > :09:54.presented sooner, it could have been acted on and Keith could have
:09:54. > :10:00.been found. Brady is a man who has been portrayed as very devious and
:10:00. > :10:05.manipulative. This is his last bargaining chip, isn't it? It seems
:10:05. > :10:13.to be. It is reported he is manipulative. He is a very clever
:10:13. > :10:21.man. He has wanted to keep some power to themselves until the end.
:10:21. > :10:27.-- to himself. It is difficult to understand his motives. If it is to
:10:27. > :10:32.be given after his death, it will be too late. Do the family have any
:10:32. > :10:35.-- any hope the body will be found before Winnie's death? It will be
:10:35. > :10:45.very difficult to find Keith without the assistance of the Ian
:10:45. > :10:46.
:10:46. > :10:53.Brady. That may not be in Winnie's lifetime. The information could be
:10:53. > :10:58.followed up. Thank you very much indeed. A drug
:10:58. > :11:01.user has died in Blackpool after being infected with anthrax. The
:11:01. > :11:04.source is thought to be contaminated heroin. The Health
:11:04. > :11:06.Protection Agency says the drug user - who injected heroin - died
:11:06. > :11:10.at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The agency says it's unclear whether
:11:10. > :11:12.his death - and another in Scotland last month - are linked. It's
:11:13. > :11:16.reassuring people that there's very little risk to the general
:11:16. > :11:18.population. Police investigating the death of
:11:18. > :11:24.David Short in Clayton, have announced they're offering a reward

:12:41. > :12:45.celebrating the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, with the festival

:13:21. > :13:24.family will be involved in running the business tonight. It is mayhem.
:13:24. > :13:30.For almost a month, Muslims everywhere have been fasting as
:13:30. > :13:36.part of the month of Ramadan. Inside this shop, customers are
:13:36. > :13:45.getting ready to celebrate. You can get anything you need from here. It
:13:45. > :13:53.is easier. Currently there are more than 130 shops catering for the
:13:53. > :13:57.needs of the Asian community. It has a growing reputation of being
:13:57. > :14:04.the place to shop. The rapid expansion of the area has
:14:04. > :14:08.contributed to Blackburn's economy. We are in a recession. Blackburn is
:14:08. > :14:15.taking its fair share of the hit. Clearly you will see a lot of
:14:15. > :14:20.people shopping. There is no doubt in my mind it is creating jobs and
:14:20. > :14:24.opportunities for people. It has been a very positive experience for

:16:27. > :16:33.I am looking forward to it. I am proud to be here. I am looking

:16:40. > :16:48.reds! It the can produce 80% of the form he produced last season, I
:16:48. > :16:52.think we will rip -- I think we will win. A new manager at Anfield
:16:52. > :16:56.and renewed determination to bring back the good times. We have to
:16:56. > :16:59.make sure we are competitive. Everton have lost Cahill and
:16:59. > :17:02.Rodwell - will it be more make do and mend at Goodison? While he
:17:02. > :17:09.performed miracles to keep them up last time around, Wigan Athletic
:17:09. > :17:14.will need more of the same from Martinez. In recent seasons the
:17:14. > :17:16.Championship has been extremely unpredictable and competitive. And
:17:16. > :17:19.with Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers joining Blackpool and
:17:20. > :17:22.Burnley, the competition in the North West is bound to be fierce.
:17:22. > :17:28.Rovers and Wanderers will be looking to bounce straight back to
:17:28. > :17:33.the Premier League. For Blackburn and Bolton, last season didn't
:17:33. > :17:39.follow the script. Two completely different stories, but the same
:17:39. > :17:47.headline - relegation. Both have kept the bulk of their squads and
:17:47. > :17:52.added several new players. Both are aiming for an immediate return.
:17:52. > :18:01.certainly hope so. With the squad they have got, they should go Bak
:18:01. > :18:08.up. I expect them to be challenging. Keeping the ball got the team for
:18:08. > :18:13.last year was a great move. We have got the experience. It will be a
:18:13. > :18:16.good squad. I think the new players give us that edge. These are the
:18:16. > :18:22.statistics. Of the 58 occasions when a team has been relegated from
:18:22. > :18:26.the Premier League, 22 teams have never made it back. Of the ones
:18:26. > :18:29.that have, 15 have made an immediate return. But on average it
:18:29. > :18:36.has taken just over three seasons. Like Burnley, Blackpool enjoyed one
:18:36. > :18:43.season in the Premier League. Pool missed out in the Play-Off final
:18:43. > :18:48.last season. Many fans believe they can go one better this time.
:18:48. > :18:52.think this season it will be automatic promotion. Very positive
:18:52. > :18:55.at the moment. We have kept most of the squad together. Burnley
:18:55. > :19:04.finished 13th last season. Clarets supporters are hoping for more this
:19:04. > :19:09.time round. A lot of the other clubs have signed big-name players.
:19:09. > :19:13.Hopefully we can keep the spirit. Good signings. Happy with that. We
:19:14. > :19:20.need a couple of more central midfielders. The derbies could be
:19:20. > :19:24.the key, starting with Bolton's visit to Turf Moor tomorrow.

:21:03. > :21:08.Halfway through my routine I knew I had got the metal. My mum had tears
